Happy PRIDE: Remembering LGBTQ History!

Happy PRIDE to everyone from Raleigh, North Carolina! The world has completely changed due to COVID-19 and that includes the lack of Pride celebrations throughout Pride month! You can still have Pride in yourself and educate others about LGBTQ history not only here in the United States, but also throughout the world!

Disclosure

I want to take this time to encourage everyone to learn more about the Transgender community by watching the new documentary on Netflix called Disclosure! It’s a fantastic film about transgender representation in TV and film up until this point in time. It’s important to listen to members of that community and understand that transgender roles should not be written from the viewpoints of cis straight men or women as that representation has shown very offensive stereotypes of transgender individuals.

The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson

I would also encourage everyone to watch another Netflix documentary called The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson about the transgender and LGBTQ activists that helped start the LGBTQ rights movement at the Stonewall Inn that later became known as the Stonewall Riots. Trans individuals were such an integral part in the start of the LGBTQ rights movement, but were forced to walk in the back of the parade, have been treated awful in their own community and are still murdered at higher rates than any other group of individuals because of hate.

Treat Others with Respect and Dignity

Continue to learn, educate yourself nd always be kind to others! Life is hard so treat others with respect and dignity, just like you would like to be treated! This window art can be found in downtown Raleigh and during the Pride month of June so many people were protesting racial inequality throughout the United States and many murals were created to increase awareness about the Black Lives Matter protests and the importance for our society to End Racism Now. Week 1

Reading: This week, I have started reading the book “The 7 Critical Principles of Effective Digital Marketing” by Kasim Aslam. I had read “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey in high school, and figured that this book would be of similar content, only applied to marketing. In the Introduction chapter, Aslam confirms that he has modeled his book after Covey’s, and that the distinction between them is that these principles apply directly to digital marketing and personality, and not necessarily character and ethics. After reading the first 2 chapters of “The 7 Critical Principles of Effective Digital Marketing”, I have learned that there are 3 Paradigm Principles that serve as a foundation for 4 Process Principles.

The principle I read about this week was “Empathize”. It sounds simple enough, but Aslam goes into depth about the differences between advertising and marketing, of which I was not previously aware. He discusses how marketing means building a long term relationship with the Client, and completely tosses the ideas of B2B and B2C marketing out the window.

Aslam starts by explaining that for each industry or buyer, you should build an Avatar or a persona. He uses the example of the medical industry where essentially, there are two types of buyer- the middle-late aged doctor who is less willing to accept digital marketing that is hard to use or requires less explanation, and then the younger-middle aged doctor who is enthusiastic about digital marketing and has a lot of ideas and potential uses, but a smaller budget. While these are not the only “Avatars” in the industry, it helps the digital marketer to determine a target demographic. Aslam then goes on to explain that when you are marketing, you are not marketing to a business, or to a consumer. To view it that way can cause you to market to mass appeal, which won’t narrow down who actually needs/wants your services. Creating the Avatar helps you to get to the core of the buyers (people) who are buying your product/service. You can determine what their goals, sources of information, peer group, potential concerns, responsibilities, pain points & challenges, and influencers are, and this will help you market to the person who is buying, instead of just the general business.

Responsibilities: Throughout this week, I worked every day except Thursday. I always have Thursdays off as they are my busiest days, and are also the days on which I get caught up on class work and projects. Every day, I am responsible for sharing posts from the clients of the Carolina Bulletin on Facebook and Instagram. I have to find entertaining and relevant content that the Carolina Bulletin can post on its Facebook and Instagram accounts that their followers can relate to and want to interact with.

I am also responsible for coming up with content for digital ads created by the Carolina Bulletin for our clients on Twitter. My job is to increase our reach and retweet things that would be interesting to our followers. I have been trying out several strategies over the last couple of months-interactive tweets, keeping up with/retweeting news and local events of significance, and doing a quote of the day (to my surprise, the most effective method). Every night, I set up the ad queue in Buffer so that the next day, the content that I created and the ad images that were created by the graphic designers will post automatically at designated times. I have determined that peak times for weekdays include 6:45-8 am, 12-1:30pm, and 6-8 pm, so I try to plan what I post around those times especially carefully.

Most weeks, I am given tasks in addition to running the Twitter account and sharing Facebook/Instagram posts. This past week, I developed an ad image for the Carolina Bulletin. I recently developed our digital marketing strategy for March and April, and based on what I saw from Facebook and Twitter analytics and activity, I determined that the Carolina Bulletin needed to advertise itself as a page for people to follow and that the Carolina Bulletin itself did not have enough of a brand for its content. Because of this, I developed the ad image for the Carolina Bulletin as well as the content that accompanied it.

My other major task for this week was searching for leads. Most weeks, I am required to find 10 leads within a certain area. This week, it was Raleigh, NC. MintPrint is based in Myrtle Beach, SC, but they are looking to expand their services into other areas in {mostly coastal} SC and NC. I basically searched online for small businesses based on categories that would diversify our portfolio. From there, I analyzed each website to try to determine if it was a client that could afford or use our services. If they were a viable option, I searched for their information on the owner/manager name, contact info, address, and hours of operation. I was able to find 10 relatively easy in Raleigh, whereas it is not usually so easy in other parts of the Carolinas and will usually take me between four and five hours.

Reflection: So far, the material that I have read in my book has given me a glimpse into what my boss probably had to do once I provided her with basic lead information. When she makes cold calls, she probably has a set persona in mind that she has to market certain aspects of her service to depending on the industry, prosperity of the business, and presumed goals.

Empathizing is also very important, however, when I am picking out and creating content for the Carolina Bulletin social media platforms. I need to make sure that I am tailoring certain content to certain people, and while not completely leaving out all of the other demographics, make sure that not all of my posts are generic. Generic posts and too much mass appeal can be impersonal and the people who follow our pages might not necessarily read the posts. I learned that not only do I have to focus on gaining followers and interactions, but maintaining interest of those followers who do more interaction, especially with some of the ad posts for our clients because those are the people who want to benefit most from our service. It is important not to lose sight of that.

Leaving the city is always great. It allows your mind to relax and restart. For my first time in North Carolina, it was nothing less than wonderful experiences. It gave me time to see everything from a different point of view. It gave me an opportunity to get my mind back in the game.

After graduation, I have moments where I question my career, like some us have experienced after completing school. Being in North Carolina and away from my Mac gave me the opportunity to create a plan and find out what I want to do. I gathered a couple of looks for my stay in North Carolina. I wanted to share what I took with me on my travel.

My Mac desktop has become part of my life. Stepping away from it for a few days has me feeling a little overwhelmed. My life is my desktop. Everyday I do things from organizing, planning articles, and anything connected to my blog. My desktop has become my life because for almost four years I sit my butt down to do write assignments for my school. I wouldn’t do half of the things I needed to for my blog because I had assignments which needed to be done. Now that I am done with school I still sit down front of my desktop knowing that I don’t have to be there always. It is a challenge that I am having at the moment. Stepping away a few days from my computer has helped me because I was feeling like a chicken with its head cut off.

First day, I wore my Express One Eleven Burnout Jogger Pant. I love these joggers because they are super comfortable and stylish. It is a great pair of joggers to wear around the house but these were perfect to have for the ride to Greenville, North Carolina. It was about being comfortable in the car. My Bobs from Skechers were comfortable and easy to put on great when you are on the move. You can never go wrong with a denim button up from Romeo and Juliet Couture.

Since I was staying in Greenville,not that far from Raleigh, I had to check out the Remy Ma’s store called Conceited. It was a cute store. I love how bright the store looked. There was a lot of light coming in from the windows. It was well organized. The customer service was spot on. There was a small section for the girls’ fashion. I didn’t purchase any girls’ fashion. Nothing caught my eyes that day so I didn’t get anything for my daughter Anastasia.

Remember, the store has only been open a couple days at the time I visited it. It was opened to the public on the August 20. Almost everything was sold out. I did find some items for myself. I noticed that Remy Ma partnered with Fashion Nova. Fashion Nova is company that located in heart of Downtown, Los Angeles. It has five retail stores in Southern California. They are hugely known for the jeans and many of your favorite celebrities wore their jeans and outfits. They have about 8.6 millions of followers on their Instagram. I only saw a few items with the Conceited tags on it but most of the items were Fashion Nova. This will be my second time having Fashion Nova merchandise in my closet. (I purchased the Celine Jacket in Black and Crushing Hard Duster in Slate, which I was a little disappointment because I only wore the Crushing Hard Duster for a friend’s birthday dinner and it rip on me. Thank god I have the best cleaners, they were able to fix it for me.) I purchased a pair of Heidi Jeans in medium, So into You Off Shoulder Bodysuit in black/silver, and T-shirt Wrap Dress in dusty Rose. (I have to take the T-shirt Wrap Dress to the cleaners because it is too big on me. I wear a medium and I purchased the dress in a x-large.) The store has everything so you have to look for your size. I love that because the plus sizes and normal sizes are in the same place. It is about making women feel comfortable while shopping, without seeing signs that point out which section they need to be at. The only thing I would recommend is wrapping the clothes in the red tissue paper and putting a Conceited sticker. It would look a lot cleaner when looking inside the bag.

For my trip to Raleigh, I went with a jumpsuit with a tie waist detail from Asos. It was about wearing something comfortable and easy to take off when trying any clothes at the store. I loved how the jumpsuit flattened my body. As for my sandals, I went with a pair of velvet flat slipper slide sandals from Amazon. Like I told you it was about being comfortable for the drive to Raleigh.

The second day I spent time with my husband’s family. We celebrated his sister’s birthday. We went over his aunt’s house. It is a lovely house that was built in 1940. The house had a lovely porch to take pictures. I wore a lovely pattern of gingham. I purchased this blue print gingham sheath dress from Express if you know me you already know I am huge fan of Express. I’ve been wearing Express merchandise since I was 10 years old. I wore a classic t-shirt from Forever21 under my dress and went with a pair of faux suede slides from Forever21. I went with a vintage belt that matches lovely with the theme of the house. It gave me a lovely vintage vibe and the look.

My third day was about hunting down those thrift stores. You already know I had to find these thrift stores down South. I had to go check it out. I love thrift shopping because you can find jewels. Before people used overlook thrift stores but it is super popular now that the city has overpriced many of their items. I have been going to thrift stores since I was young so I very pleased to go down there. I recommend wearing leggings and a casual t-shirt or a dress while thrifting. It is about being comfortable and have this ability to try on cloths without obstacles. I only visited one store called My Sister’s Closet where I found a black leather belt with a gold buckle detail (I paid 0.20 cents.) and a Jones New York Signature faux leather jacket with a two tones color (I paid 10 dollars.). I enjoy My Sister’s Closet. It was nice and clean. It was definitely well-organized and I love that it didn’t have a funny smell because some thrift stores smell weird.

After leaving My Sister’s Closet my husband and I couldn’t find the Goodwill thrift store but we ended up in a small boutique called bevello. It was a lovely boutique in Greenville, NC. bevello launched their first store in Raleigh, NC in April 2009. bevello is spell with a lowercase b. I really enjoy this boutique. It is a super fashionable boutique. It was well organized. My husband and I received wonderful southern hospitality from Jordan Pulido. She was lovely girl. I was loving her hair. She was rocking that hair. She give us true southern hospitality. I purchased a Thread & Supply Reversible Bomber Jacket, French Connection Sweater, and Cupcakes and Cashmere suede/fur vest.

On my journey to both stores, I went with A-line pleated skirt which I wore for my birthday dinner. I added a black belt with a gold bucket from Express. My black graphic t-shirt of Selena from Forever21 was the perfect shirt to pair making my look super casual. I went with a pair of low-top canvas sneakers from Forever21. It was all about checking out those store.

Overall, I loved the experience of North Carolina for my vacation and visiting my family. I can’t live down there. I am more of a city chick. I love the fact that I can go to a store at any time of the day and night. I will be returning to My Sister’s Closet, Conceited, and bevello next year.

North Carolina Leaving the city is always great. It allows your mind to relax and restart. For my first time in North Carolina, it was nothing less than wonderful experiences.
