I've been using emacs as my daily driver professionally for both development and systems administration for about 8 years now and it's absurdly productive once you get familiar with it. I use vim fairly regularly as well (especially on remote machines) but haven't delved anywhere near as deep into customizing it, but I will say that neovim supports writing your config in Lua and that most users I know choose to go that route.

The plugins available for emacs (not to mention the snippets of people's config they've open sourced) are boundless.

In my opinion, spacemacs/doom and the like typically package way too much stuff to meaningfully wrap your head around upfront. I chose to grow my own config organically over the years by addressing the things in my workflow that annoyed me as they happened and I'm very glad that I did, it's quite small (7 elisp files total all within 100 lines) and is close enough to vanilla emacs that I can be productive on a remote system with a freshly installed and unconfigured version.

Here's a couple core things I think every config needs:

- FrameMove (choose which frame to move to directionally)

- WindMove (same, but for windows)

- multi-vterm (a very sensible "terminal in a buffer" implementation)

- eglot (language server support that Just Works ™️)

- format-all (formats your code on save automatically in basically every language)

- rainbow delimiters (gay your parens, keep track of where you are visibly in nested code)
