Wind Breaker Episode 12 Review - Grade Captains

The man, the legend, Kaji Rrrrrrrren (Ren Kaji in Western order) is here. As I read ahead in the manga, Kaji is legitimately one of my Top 5 favorite characters in Wind Breaker. While his introduction is a bit chill, if this anime ever gets a second season, that’s when my boy Kaji will shine. You know he’s popular when he gets a high-quality voice actor announcement two episodes before his official debut, ranked 3rd in the second popularity poll, and is plastered in merchandise despite the lack of screen time like how Sae Itoshi gets so much merch despite his minuscule screen time in Blue Lock.

This episode is Sakura slowly getting adjusted to what it means to be a Grade Captain and what it means to take on a huge responsibility. He doesn’t feel like he’s qualified to be a leader, but the leader isn’t chosen because he wants to—he is chosen due to general consensus. That’s how it works in the real world. Heck, Kaji is also Grade Captain and he’s the least leader-like person out there. Don’t worry, Sakura. Suo and Nirei got your back like how Enomoto and Kusumi got Kaji’s back.

Ren Kaji is like if Sakura got character development, but still maintained his prickliness. That’s Kaji in a nutshell. His introduction alone shows that he’s a lot cattier than Sakura from yelling like he’s hissing at people to jumping over a bridge. If Sakura is a cat, then Kaji is like the big brother cat. He has a habit of eating lollipops and having his music super loud. However, what makes Kaji different from Sakura is that Kaji knows how to rely on others and can count on them. This is a good lesson for Sakura to follow because he slowly realizes what it means to open up to others here. Kaji’s voice actor is none other than Nobuhiko Okamoto. I’m sure that mainstream anime watchers will instantly recognize his voice the moment he yelled. Yes, he’s Bakugo. I’m not too familiar with My Hero Academia, but some of Okamoto’s other roles include Himmel from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and Genya Shinazugawa from Demon Slayer. To be honest, Okamoto is great with the angry boy typecast and I’m assuming that’s the reason why he got casted as Kaji. Nonetheless, the voice suits him.

Also, I have to give props to Kotoha here. She has always been a big motivator for Sakura. She teases him, but she knows that riling him up will get him to do something. She realizes that he’s stuck on what he should do now that he got voted Grade Captain, and Kotoha realizes that he hasn’t said anyone’s names so far, other than Umemiya’s. If you look back, he’s always saying “You”, “that guy”, or giving someone a nickname like “Scraggles” for Togame or “Shark-Teeth” for Hiiragi. This is a good way for Sakura to realize that if he wants to take on responsibility, he needs to start by learning people’s name—something he has never done before. While he’s terrible with remembering so many names, he got Nirei to help him out as he has very good memory and can memorize a person’s name and face. See, haters? Nirei ain’t useless. I love that he doesn’t have to burden himself with so much at once. He can take baby steps until he feels confident.

Some of my favorite parts of the episode is Enomoto rolling his R’s and Sakura wall-jumping. He’s very cat-like, so it makes sense he can do that. However, wall jumping always makes me think of Mario. It’d be cool if someone edited Sakura’s wall-jumping with Mario sound effects.

This was a chill episode overall. I honestly can’t wait to meet the four devas next week. One of them is my favorite character in Wind Breaker. Next week is the finale. Wait, what do you mean next week’s the finale? No! I don’t want to part with Wind Breaker! Please announce a Season 2, Cloverworks! What did you think about this episode?

what I learned from wbktwt (wind breaker twitter) is that whenever the manga goes on a break, another popularity poll pops out - and I think it is a positive type of distraction in order to avoid any unnecessary discourse, as we can see with other series.

yes, I am aware that it has been a thing [with other series] but this is just a specific thought for wbk. i do love to be a part of this fandom as it is right now.

just hoping that nii sensei is always in a great health condition.

started watching wind breaker b/c of ur blog and i’m only a few episodes in but waow …. i understand suo’s appeal now… to me he’s part chinese (im projecting myself onto him + his clothing is chinese so)… can’t wait to binge read all ur wind breaker fics now to fuel my obsession <3

I think it's very valid to hc him as part chinese! especially since there are quite a few chinese people in japan and if he's half then it may just be less complicated for him to introduce himself as jp due to negative stereotypes etc.

we actually saw his master's back in a manga panel and it looked like he was wearing a changpao silhouette, so I personally hc his master as chinese and suo as having been "raised" somewhat culturally chinese by his master. and he obviously adores his sensei so it kinda makes sense he would go out of his way to emulate him with the clothing etc haha

H2o Au Ch.1: Water shouldn't be feared...

Warning: Mentions of Abuse, panic attacks/anxiety attacks

Water shouldn't be feared..or so Virgil thought until that day arrived.

The very beginning might work best.

Virgil Dusk was never comfortable when he goes home to his drunk father,who surprisingly keeps his good reputation in the City of Ophal, the town he lived in.

He was always seen as a hero to all for some reason, a good deed man, a rule follower not a rule breaker.

It all changed when Virgil's mom and him divorced and he remarried.

The son, Remy Dusk, actually got along with Virgil and vice versa. Remy always seemed to listen to him for everything he done in his life.

But the stepmom left them, leaving Remy with Virgil and his father, and the father lost hope of love...and went insane.

He blamed Virgil for everything that happened to him, his love life in general.

This gave Virgil major anxiety attacks in his young age and Remy gave him a proper medication.

That was all years ago, they are both in high school.

Virgil never talked but was the most smartest children, along with Remy and Logan.

Logan Smith became Virgil's only best friend and source to conversation whenever he wasn't with Remy. Logan appreciates Virgil and helps him with anything that would frighten him and protect him.

Then there's Patton Grilfred, a happy go lucky child with the talent to make some of mist grumpiest people to crack up laughing, even his twin brother, Dee Grilfred, and he'd make his younger brother, Emile Grilfred crack up. But Virgil would never talk to Patton.

He was friends with the most popular guy in school, Roman Delightful.

Roman was always...not fond of Virgil, to put it nicely. He gave Virgil the name Anxiety after a short little anxiety attack Virgil had, both him and Remus Delightful, his twin, both call him whenever they saw Virgil.

The name became Stuck and Virgil didn't even mind it.

Why was that day so life changing?

Patton was looking at the timer, his eyes closed to the numbers as Roman approached him.

"Well, kiddo, you just got a new personal best of 1.2 seconds."

Roman took off his goggles."Magnificent, Patton. Thanks for coming to practice."

"No problem, I had nothing else to do this summer."Patton admitted, looking at the stop watch."I'll wait for you outside the pool."Patton got up and walked up to the deck, full of fishing boats and yachts, some cruises and ferries as well.

"Hey! Patton!" Cried a boy, who was near a boat.

"Hm??" Patton walked towards them and looks at the boat."Boat won't start?"

"Yeah. I'm missing the engine key..."He said as Patton got on.

"Let me see.."Patton looks around till he see a hole where the engine key should've been in."Yep...it's missing.."

The boat suddenly begun to drift off, Patton more away from the deck he realized.

"Uh, Boys?"He asked when realization hit him.

He was now further away.

"Admit that Roman has it and I will pull you back.

"He doesn't have that! He hates boating."

Patton then sat down, refusing to swim out.

"You alright?"Whispered a voice.

"Anxi-... Virgil."Patton gasp, trying to keep cool.

"Look like you got yourself in a pickle."He muttered, grabbing the engine key from his pocket and inserted it.

"You stole that?"

"They tried to bully by brother...of course." Virgil whispered, starting the boat and begins to drive it.

"I never you were a good driver."

Virgil saw in the distance Logan and Roman, Roman bragging and Logan yawning, basically ignoring.

Virgil saw to the dock they were located."Sup."He said with his tiny voice.

"Something to save me from Roman."He said as gets in the boat next to Patton.

"Are you coming, Roman?"Patton asked, scooting for Logan.

"Is Emo Nightmare driving?"

"Yes, Virgil is driving."

Roman rolled his eyes and entered the boat, and did a little huff.

"Are you done complaining, Princey?"Virgil asked softly.

"Yes."

Virgil started the engine again and was driving to the sea.

It was very relaxing for all, wind flowing through their hair and water glistening in the sunlight.

Suddenly the stopped, in middle of the sea.

"I knew it."Logan said, his eyes not leaving his book.

"You know me to well.."Virgil muttered."At least we have nearby land.."

Patton gives in an paddle, and begins to paddle to the nearby land.

The island, according to Logan, is very old, over 2,000 years old, and is said to have a strange magic whoever came inside it.

"But if honestly I don't really believe that magic part."

"That'd be odd.."Roman admitted as he entered the jungle."Let's just that cave and exit out and find signal."

"This location doesn't have much signal."Patton said, looking at his phone.

"Oh crud.."

After a few hours of wondering, The boys found themselves near two large rocks.

"Higher ground, we might get a better signal."Logan said, grabbing Virgil's arm softly.

Virgil nods and gets up the higher ground.

Patton jumped to the other room along with Roman and Logan. Virgil shook his head at Logan.

"Everything will be alright, Virgil."Logan said, getting closer, reaching his hand out for him.

Virgil shivers a little and tries to jump up but slides down an unexpected hole.

"Virgil!?"

The three surrendered the hole.

"Kiddo! Are you alright?!"Patton asked, trying to look down.

"Y-yes..."Virgil whispered.

"Can you climb up?"

"T-too steep."

Logan climbs down the hole to Virgil's location, checking around.

"Virgil, are you alright?"Logan asked, checking Virgil for marks, brusies, or cuts.

"I-im...alright."Virgil said and got up.

Patton and Roman followed."It's already dark and creepy."

"Stop complaining and come on!"

Virgil followed a glowing light and found a bright cavern, stones and jewels decorated around.

And a pool, glowing with the moon near.

"A way out, Patton."Roman said, getting in the pool.

"Can you try to find an exit?"

Roman nods and dives in to find one.

Logan gets in next, looking up."For sure its about Midnight, or very close.

Roman got up next to Logan."An exit! I found one."

Patton jumps in and looks at Virgil."Ready, kiddo?"

Virgil looked down."I can't swim..."

"Hold my hand, Virgil."Logan said softly.

Virgil did so and immediately dropped to the ocean, only Logan picking him back up.

"Woah... what's happening?"

All looked up and the moon was at it full moon, glowing, water swirling and bubbling around them.

"Follow me."Roman said, diving in.

The rest followed to the exit, Not knowing of a change they will experience.

"The police are here!"

The boys swam to the boat and they got home safely.

The next day wasn't a good day for Virgil. His father was more drunk that night, calling Virgil such horrid names.

Virgil was now at his lawn, water his garden, until water got on his clothes.

Virgil was about to walk away but call instead, face fell in the grass.

He tried to get up but his legs won't work...cause they were not legs! But a full purple tail attached to his body.

"H..."

Patton, who was already a merman, in his tub.

"How..how did.."Patton questioned snd tried to move but to no avail.

"This is not truly bad..."

Roman was doing his morning swimming and was swimming far into the ocean. "What's more lovely then a m-?!"

Roman felt a change in his legs and stopped at a holt.

"What..."Roman gasped, as his red crimson tail was in his view."....I hope this isn't a costume...'

"Logan, can you wash the dishes??"His mother asked, who was in her study.

Logan got up and put his book down, to retreat to the sink.

Logan begin to turn on the water and grabbing the first dish to find.

While he was washing, he immediately slipped down and a tail was trailed behind him.

"I guess that island was magic..."

The boys came by Logan's house freaking out.

"Then a tail popped out and I thought- Logan!!"

Logan had a cup of water and he spilled it on Roman.

Roman ran to the living and transformed.

"My exact calculations. Water starts our transformation."

Virgil and Patton walked inside.

"Could this be.."

"Cause of the island? Yes. I took more information while I was turned. It turns out that island was an island of mermaids snd merman, but had to disappear due fo a mermaid falling in love with a human. This made the mermaid island cursed, whoever human found the poll at a full moon, will become a merperson until they return to that island at another full moon."

"Seriously?"

"Yes."

The boys knew one thing that day... Their lives had completely changed forever...

Anime Japan 2022 Polls the Top 10 Manga That Fans Want to See Animated

  Every year AnimeJapan, the biggest event on the anime calendar, polls anime and manga fans to see which manga they'd like to see get an anime adaptation over the next year, hoping that producers pick up the series to be animated sometime soon! The results for 2022 were released today with some surprising (and not-so-surprising) inclusions! 

  Some of the bigger series' that were on the list last year, like SPY x FAMILY and Komi Can't Communicate, thankfully don't appear on the list due to anime adaptations announced or even released! But series' like Solo Leveling and Senpai wa Otokonoko appear on the list again this year despite their apparent popularity alongside newcomers Kaiju No. 8 and Oshi no Ko.
