I have so many feelings about this latest chapter!!!!

First! Sakura and his unintentional rizz is killing me

Baby boy Endo is not a safe human (although I have a feeling Satoru Nii is going to FORCE me to like him by the end of this arc). His love obsession with Sakura is SO understandable. Like I get it. Sakura is my favorite too! (Suo , Hiragi, Ume, Kaji, Nirei, please look away). I LOVE Sakura’s kindness and forgiving nature, I think it’s one of the best things about his character. But I also hate that Endo is on the receiving end of it maybe that’s just me

SECOND!

UMEMIYA MY DARLING NEXT WEEK WILL TEAR ME APART I JUST KNOW IT

I am not mentally prepared but also how am I supposed to wait???? Like to read this chapter I literally scheduled out a fake Zoom meeting at my work so I could read in the conference room in peace.

Am I supposed to try and be normal for a whole week? I don’t know if that’s possible.

ALSO the ARTWORK!!!!! Satoru!!!! Wow!! I LOVE of expressive his work is and UMEMIYA LOOKS BREATHTAKING AND ANGRY AND I AM HERE FOR IT

This part too, like Takiishi’s design is phenomenal and the pure CRAZY radiating off of him in this is perfection.

In summary: this chapter was once again amazing. The artwork was perfect, the writing is going in an amazing direction and I’m REALLY looking forward to next chapter. Umemiya is still my beloved and I can’t wait to watch him kick ass

Symbols of Takiishi and Umemiya in Ch.150

Contains Chapter 150 spoilers!!!

I was working on symbolisms in WBK and chapter 150 came out and I LOST MY MIND GRRRR

The panel of Takiishi vs Umemiya was directly accompanied with another panel:

In my previous post, it was (not really subtly) implied that Umemiya, being the Boufuurin leader and surrounded by the Four Heavenly Kings, carries the same role as Buddha. Thus, you can see Budda on the right.

But what about Takiishi? We have so little information of him, but from this frame, I'm pretty certain that here, Takiishi is Garuda, or Karura in Japanese Buddhist version.

Garuda in Buddhism is invoked as a symbol of impetuous violent force, speed, and martial prowess.

Karura (迦楼羅), sometimes can go by the name of konjichō (金翅鳥, lit. "gold-winged bird", is a gigantic, fire breathing bird that feeds on dragons/serpents. In Journey to the West, Garuda was subdued by Buddha and served Buddha from then on.

okay call me crazy and I know the newest chapter of Wind Breaker just released like over an hour ago, but hear me out: I think I know the deity Nii Satoru used to represent Takiishi.

Part 2: Umemiya Hajime and Fudō Myō-ō

So let's talk about it. Spoilers for Chapter 150!

I believe Takiishi is being represented by a Karura (迦楼羅, かるら). Here's my evidence to this theory:

According to my research, karura are said to be a race of mythical fire-breathing bird-men (demigods) originating from Hindu mythology and was later adopted by the Buddhist into their pantheon as a protector deity or in accord. to legends were converted into Buddhism by Buddha and are considered one of the Eight Legions.

While going through my research, I found some interesting connections that may or may not apply to what we know of Takiishi and the imagery of the deity depicted:

Bird-like figure = appearance wise, the deity's depiction looks very similar to that of the karura.

"In Japan, Garuda is an enormous fire-breathing eagle-man with golden feathers and magic gems crowning its head."

"They are humanoid in appearance, with the heads and wings of eagles. They have red skin, and red and gold feathers. Karura are fearsome. They breath fire from their beaks. The flapping of their wings sounds like thunder, and creates gusts of wind so strong they can dry up lakes, knock down houses, and cover entire cities in darkness. Their gigantic wingspans are 330 yojanas wide, and they can leap 3,360,000 li in a single bound. (The lengths of one yojana and one li vary greatly from country to country and era to era—a yojana can measure anywhere between 1.6 km to over 13 km long, and one li can measure anywhere between 400 m and 3.9 km.)"

Fire symbolism = Karura are said to be fire-breathing creatures. In Takiishi's lastname (焚石), it consists of the characters that roughly translates to "burning stone" (焚, taki = to burn; 石, ishi = stone). Also, his hair. (Note: Need I say more?)

The original Hindu deity's name is Garuda (sanskrit: The Devourer). The name comes from the fact that karura are known for feeding on dragons, more specifically naga or malicious serpents who have not been converted by Buddha, due to a fued between Garuda's mother (Skt. Vinata) and her sister, mother to the naga. Relating this to Takiishi's bloodlust and extremely violent tendencies during fights, perhaps Umemiya is the dragon he wants to "devour", 🤔. (Note: @yellow-gardenia-48 made a really interesting point in the replies about Endo's signature animal being a snake.)

Conclusion: While I'm not 100% certain that this deity is the exact one the mangaka used for the panel, I'm 95% sure that it is. If anyone would like to add anything more in terms of connections between Takiishi and Karura, feel free to do so! Or disagree with me, that's also cool too. I definitely would like to see more discussions on the symbolisms and cultural references Nii Satoru uses in the series so if I can be a jumping point to that, I'd be happy to do so.

The whole last half of chapter 150 was just a series of renaissance paintings, you can fight me on that

I love how, up until this point we’ve only seen Umemiya’s face. It’s obvious he’s pissed - he’s even got that glowy, no-pupils-in-his-eyes expression that’s synonymous with intense rage.

But Takiishi’s face? It’s been obscured by the angle, or his hair, or cut out of frame altogether until we get to that final pair of panels… and suddenly we see Endo with actual fucking tears of joy in his eyes, and right below it, finally we see Takiishi’s face, unobscured and showcasing his unbridled happiness.

Bravo, Sensei, for building up to that panel that way.
