and if i said that dean and john have one of the most well written relationships on the show despite only sharing screen time in a handful of episodes

say what you will about jensen ackles but in 2005 he made the active decision to pitch dean’s voice lower not because he felt like dean’s voice was naturally low but because JDM’s voice was low and he thought dean would try to talk like his dad

the idea that sam is just healthier at handling trauma/emotions is such bullshit. like that man also ignored, deflected and dismissed every single thing that ever happened to him. he is not healthier than dean in any way. i think collectively that needs to be accepted better

the craziest thing about the mixtape is it sets up a precedent, we had no idea dean gave it to him because it didn't happen onscreen, we only knew about it because we saw castiel trying to return it.

so how many other gifts may dean have given castiel that he just kept?? whose gifting or returning wasn't crucial to the main plot and so we didn't get to see??

how many destiel scenes happened offscreen during all those years?? another example of this is them watching tombstone. so many little throwaway lines or moments here and there that basically confirm that for as much insane couple behavior we saw onscreen, there was a whole other level of offscreen insanity going on

I’m rewatching supernatural, and I can’t believe I never realised this before, but sam and dean are the exact opposite of what they think of themselves. In the brothers’ eyes Sam is the more emotionally open one, or the one with more empathy, and yet he struggles to make close relationships that aren’t romantic. He keeps everyone at arms distance: john, mary, bobby, cas, and so many other examples throughout the series. Whereas dean is supposed to be closed off and emotionally stunted, and yet he has deeper connections with almost all recurring characters: garth, jody, donna, claire (obviously the ones mentioned before). He lets people in more easily than sam. Even how he knows all the shopkeepers in lebanon, whereas they don’t seem to know sam (ie 14x13).

I think Dean "doesn't like" dogs in the same way that he "likes" one night stands. Time and time the spoken narrative tries to depict Dean as a ladies man, just as it tries to depict him as a dog hater, yet the behavioral cues tell the opposite story (Dean wanting a relationship but feeling like he can't have that; Dean possibly wanting a dog but also feeling he can't have that).

No dogs in the Impala is clearly something that seems parroted (maybe at some point Dean did show interest in having a dog but John immediately shot it down). Dogs being associated with Sam leaving also doesn't help.

Yet when a dog "presents itself" Dean's always the one to connect harder:

-in Dog Dean afternoon Dean's the one that does the spell to communicate with the dog

-Dean's the one that absolutely LOVES Scooby Doo (even having Scooby Doo boxer briefs)

-Miracle sleeping in Dean's bed and having her bowls in Dean's room - indicating she is clearly Dean's dog, not Sam's

I think Dean honestly loves dogs but acts as if he hates them because it's something he always wanted but felt like he couldn't have

i think it's important to often bring up how john and dean's relationship was not just black and white because fandoms tend to villainize parents often without nuance. was he a bad parent? yes. but he was also a parent. i am not defending him in any shape or form, let it be known, but it is glaringly obvious how many people believe a parent can only be good or bad. i would also go out a limb and say that some of the mischaracterizations of dean's character stem from firm belief that he was raised by a loveless, hateful man. sometimes your father will help you with your math homework. sometimes you will frustrate him so much (because you're just a child) and he will backhand you. sometimes he will make you a warm meal even though he's as tired as a dog coming from work because he loves you. sometimes he will yell at you so loud your ears will ring. he will be your biggest hero because he drives a cool car and shoots big guns, but he won't know how to explain to you that you remind him of his dead wife. he will be your worst enemy because he's trying but his trying isn't enough. he will be your biggest hero because he pulls you out of a dangerous bar or a werewolf even though he put you in that situation. he will be your worst enemy when you teach your brother that this isn't enough. because the opposite of love is not hate; it's indifference. and god knows he loved and hated both you and your little brother.

dean calling john when there was something in his old house. and crying

season two dean being so fucking suicidal bc in john's last moments he confirmed that he was aware that he did a shit job and apologized for it, before destroying dean's faith in him by asking him to kill sam

every other time god comes up in conversation dean ends up having a daddy issues coded conversation

dean beating up baby after john dies

sam implying that a little more alcohol and they could've had max's childhood.

younger sam telling amy pond that she wouldn't want to see his dad when he was drinking.

dean not meeting sam's eye for a beat after he implies that could have max's childhood
