I think if they were to remake Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory again, and I mean not in the vein of the prequel that has recently came out that I haven’t seen, that Mike Teavee should not be continued in the interpretation of video game enthusiast. But rather, in going back to the television programs and movies route, you just amp that up even more than it already was, and by that I mean, well Mike Teavee should have a Letterboxd account and the television version of Letterboxd that I know exists I just don’t know the name of

A Live-to-Film Celebration • Saturday, November 4th on National Candy Day

This extraordinary event will feature spectacular animation created by acclaimed painter and illustrator SHAG. The Bowl will be projecting his Wonka-inspired art all around the stage during the film and performances. Led by an all-start cast including John Stamos, Elle King, Finn Wolfhard, and “Weird Al” Yankovic, and accompanied by multi-instrumental band DeVotchKa, this magical show will leave an everlasting impression!

Oteil & Friends at Rose Music Center at the Heights, Huber Heights, Ohio, Sept. 8, 2022

On concert stages, as in mythical chocolate factories, there is no substitute for pure imagination.

Dead & Company and former Allman Brothers Band bassist Oteil Burbridge and his Friends - guitarists Steve Kimock (Zero/The Other Ones) and Eric Krasno (Soulive/Phil Lesh and Friends); former Jerry Gracia Band keyboardist Melvin Seals; and drummer John Kimock - opened their Fall 2022 tour in front of a small, but highly enthused, audience Sept. 8 at the Rose Music Center at the Heights and proved the Willy Wonka truism.

Oteil & Friends have chops. Seals is a masterful player in the gospel tradition, although he was too low in the mix; Kimock and Krasno were locked in, each aping Garcia’s tone when playing lead; and Burbridge is even better singing Garcia’s numbers than he is playing Phil Lesh-style low end. They are not, however, so imaginative.

There’s all this talk about Garcia because Oteil & Friends were first and foremost a JGB tribute act during their two-set, 150-minute performance, which included six numbers from the Garcia Band repertoire and two additional Garcia/Robert Hunter compositions among the evening’s 13 selections.

Like Garcia, they slipped an instrumental “Eleanor Rigby” into “After Midnight;��� played “Mystery Train” in the jazz car; and reeled off tracks like “Tore Up,” “Midnight Moonlight” and “Run for the Roses” in straight-forward, JGB fashion. All well-done, but not particularly edge-of-seat stuff.

The band played with Dead & Company’s languidness on “Dark Star” and “Bird Song,” even as Burbridge made the case he - not Bob Weir or John Mayer - should be singing these songs.

That’s not to say there weren’t cliffhangers as the clad-in-tie-dye Burbridge - who said he was sick but seemed in excellent shape as he directed traffic and bounced around the stage looking happy as possible - allowed Krasno to sing his song “Unconditional Love;” sung his own, down-and-funky “Rooster;” and handed vocal duties to Seals on “That’s What Love Will You Make You Do.”

The latter was a highlight as Seals - who doesn’t appear to have aged since the 1990s - soloed throughout the entire song and had the crowd so amped, they sung the resolving line before he could, catching the entire band off guard. A beautiful moment.

Other such moments included Kimock and Krasno weaving electrifying elements of “Blue Sky” into the show-closing, Krasno-sung “Franklin’s Tower,” complete with “Slipknot!” coda, and the ABB instrumental “Hot ’Lanta” that opened set two.

Ultimately, the show must be judged on the Dark Star Orchestra scale. Oteil & Friends are good at what they do; it comes down to whether what they do fries one’s egg.
