WILL IT BLEND
RESEARCH CONTINUTED
After having my own take on double exposures I started looking into other photographers for inspiration and improvements I could make upon my own work.
CHRISTOFFER RELANDER
This was the first photographer I looked into. His use of nature and human combinations was really nice. This cutout/silhouette use contained all the details to one place which has made sure that there's enough negative space for the viewer to relax in too.
I like this artists approach to double exposures.

MOMA - Constantin Brâncuși
I looked into MOMA and the artists features here. Looking at Constatins mixture of self portrait and plants. This black and white imagery makes it look as though the plant is growing with him which feels like a nice metaphor. I like how even though there's stuff going on in the background it seems like him and the plant are framed in such a way that highlights them as the main obvious subject.

RICHARD PJ LAMBERT
TAMARA LICHTENSTEIN
This is my favourite image that I want to base some experiments off of using people in my photos too to combine both an individual with buildings and nature to see what kind of perceptions come from this. I like the balance of yellows and blues in this it really makes a calm reflective environment.
Tumblr media
Another image I like is this combination of buildings and a person using different zoom lenses to create a contrast of detail from the zoom out of the building to the zoom of the face. This is something I'd like to channel through my work as humans are natural mammals in the environment which could link quite nicely to nature vs manmade.

Will it blend? Presentation
Tumblr media
When presenting our will it blend? experiments we worked within a group to provide critical feedback. My group presented to each other which we found useful because it allowed us to get some context around the experiments. This presentation emphasised that experiments can fail. This made me more comfortable when presenting my failed experiments because my group gave me ways I could explore the concept to make more successful outcomes.
In conclusion, this short project was challenging but helped to get into the creative mindset after the long summer.

Specialist Practice - Will it Blend?
For this project we were given two words each. Following the words, we have to come up with 6 pieces of experimentation to blend the two words together and visually show our interpretation of the words.
My words: control + soar
Here I have come up with two different lists of synonyms for each word to help me come up with ideas to blend the two together.
Tumblr media
This list has helped me discover different meaning of the two words. I thought soar was describing something that's flying clouds high and always floats up in the air or flies, but actually it means take off which had me envision planes. This also relates to control as a plane takes off in a controlled manner. I personally think that control and soar compliment each other as we see this in nature and how birds have so much control when they fly, visualising this in many wild animals such as squirrels as well. I think potential ways of experimentation that I'd love to do is videography, screen printing, drawing, mixed media, collage of imageries, digital collage. Those are only a few that I will look to persue in the next couple of days.

It has been brought to my attention that we are about to cross a milestone. To be honest, I check it from time to time, but basically I am constantly working so I had no idea. YouTube’s shadow ban has not been good to us I’d appreciate it if you help push it over the line.. #shootingday #censorship #😳 #willitblend https://www.instagram.com/p/B2ebVHhAYFB/?igshid=1f6l353bhdhhj

Audio
Sound:
For the sound experiment I recorded audio of keys unlocking a door and layered all the different sounds on top of eachother to see what it would sound like when they were all muddled together.

WILL IT BLEND
OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT
CAMERA
I was using a Canon 5 mark IV to do this project. This being my first time using this camera I struggled to get the hang of using a DSLR and did not know what the result was straight away through using a mirrorless screen. This was something different for me but it was fun to try and learn. In the future, I would look for less busy public spaces to allow myself more time to capture what I need too. But as a fast-paced project, there wasn't too much time to consider it was more about the experiments themselves,.
I enjoyed the openness of this project and would do it again if I were to improve anything it would be to do more research while experimenting.

Type and colour experiment
Using my type experiments I decided to experiment with colour.
Tumblr media
Using the same method as my last type experiment, I wanted to continue exploring over laying type. However, I wanted to use a different colour for each to separate the words. I decided to use blue for thee word soar because it reminds me of the sky. I chose pink for the word control because I liked how it contrasted with the blue but is less harsh then the red.
I think this experiment was unsuccessful because it does not blend the words. The different colours make the words look too separate.
Tumblr media
When overlapping the type I noticed that it created shapes. I decided to use these shapes to create an abstract image to see how they blended. I think this experiment was slightly successful because it makes the audience question what it is trying to show. Parts of each word can also be seen in the experiment. However, I do not think it successfully blends the words because the words look separate.

Sound Development
I proceeded editing the audios I previously picked as the most appropriate ones for my final work using After Effects. Moreover, I decided to add the specific word ‘BIOLOGI-COAL’ as to blend the two words to a single one and make the text react to the sounds.

Will it blend? Presentation Slides & Individual Experiment Evaluation
Year 3 - Will it blend?
(16 October 2020)
These are my presentation slides. When I designed them I was happy with what they looked like. However, in hindsight, I should have reduced the number of slides a lot. Even though I already took out some of the photography outcomes I should have presented only one or two, on the same page. Also I should have left away the title slides (’animation’, ‘sound’, etc). Instead of having them as separate pages I should have shrunk the titles and put them on the same slide as the relevant experiment outcomes. For my own satisfaction I might re-do them to see how much of a difference that would have made.
I want to take this post to briefly summarise my thoughts to each of my presented outcomes and the feedback I received for them:
Animation My animation didn’t turn out very exiting. It was the same thing all over and for that it might have been a bit long. But I managed to animate exactly what I had in mind for this. I also added sound which didn’t play in the presentation due to technical issues that I had not been aware of. First, I was hesitant to use After Effects and Illustrator to create an animation. But I challenged myself to do it and if it had been a more interesting story plot it probably would have been more successful. It was the outcome that was most self-explanatory and closest to the definitions of landowner and commission that I could get to. It isn’t very aesthetically pleasing and I feel it isn’t fully successful but it isn’t unsuccessful either. I feel very neutral about this experiment.
Illustration The final illustrations turned out really nice and I am glad I did not stick with the initial colour palette. I like that the illustrations are humorous. Cat owners can probably relate to the story I was trying to tell with those illustrations. I don’t have too much to say to this one. I also didn’t get any feedback for this specific experiment but to me it is a successful one.I enjoyed the making of this and I like the outcome a lot too. It also responds to my words, even though the connection might be a bit abstract at first.
Photography I really liked doing this experiment. It would have been a lot more exiting and challenging if I could have gone and taken the photographs myself. This way I had to use images from the internet. Some of them had watermarks on them which was criticised in my feedback. Should I have bought these images for this project? I don’t think so as this was just an experiment and obviously I could not photoshop the watermarks out of them as that would be illegal and not fair towards the photographer. This experiment also did not address an issue/problematic/etc. and was more of an art expression I guess which didn’t seem to be perceived too well (art is not design?). It was mentioned that I should have focused on two styles(countries) only or compared expensive vs cheap houses. My intention was to compare the individuality of each country’s architecture. What I could have done was to make the different sections of the houses more clear, with a line or something, but I intended to almost make it a challenge to see that they are not one house but different houses merged into one. In my opinion this outcome was successful as it also connected closely with my two words. I agree though that the presentation of the photography outcomes could have been done better.
Colour My colour outcome is not very strong and probably unsuccessful compared to my other experiments. I found it very challenging to come with an idea for it as I couldn’t figure a close connection between my two exact words and any colour. Maybe I could have gone more abstract with this.
Typography This was the only experiment where I had a real world problem in mind that I tried to address. From the feedback I received it seemed that this was the most successful one of all my experiments - I guess because of the fact that it addressed an issue/problematic which is what design does. I personally quite like this outcome but compared to some other projects it was not as fun to create. However, I feel like all in all it was a successful experiment for this project and unlike the other type experiments I did it had a meaning to it.
Sound I genuinely enjoyed working on sound. It was the most fun of all the experiments I did as it required me to work with different programs, record sounds as well as editing found sounds from online to create a trailer-like sound scape. Even though it probably sounded horrible when I presented it (sounds a lot more cinematic with headphones on) it was perceived and commented on to be almost like a title sequence. Since this is almost what I was aiming for I see this result as a success. Not only the result, but also the experiment itself.
