The tapestries shown here all belong to the same series that was made by Willem de Pannemaker between 1540 and 1555 for Emperor Charles V (1500-1558). 1-2 from @rijksmuseum 3-4 from @kunsthistorischesmuseumvienna 5-6 from the Imperial Treasury in Vienna De Pannemaker was active as weaver in Brussels between 1535 and 1578. Among his patrons were Charles V and his sister Mary of Hungary. Willem’s father had been court weaver to Charles’ aunt Margaret of Austria. These three tapestries were undoubtedly part of a much bigger series. The design shows the coat of arms of Charles, who held many titles, with a crowned double-headed eagle in a field of plants and flowers. The tapestries were probably used to decorate the walls of a hall in a palace or castle during festivities. Perhaps even the ‘Aula Magna’ of the Coudenburg Palace in Brussels, one of Charles’ favourite residences in the Low Countries. #rijksmuseum #rijksmuseumamsterdam #kunsthistorischesmuseum #kaiserlicheschatzkammer #tapestry #willemdepannemaker #depannemaker #brussels #coatofarms #habsburg #history #dutchhistory #art (bij Rijksmuseum) https://www.instagram.com/p/B21sVyfIaJy/?igshid=1flbysinxlqb2
