Rewind Recap: Weekly Update W/E 10/11/24 #books #rewindrecap #weeklyupdate #willdean #johnconnolly #joansumner #peterjames
Well – I cannot lie. I am glad that week is over and done with. Work was … challenging and I am absolutely drained. Reading was also challenging – nothing to do with the books. I just didn’t have any energy to do anything much more than snooze when I finally got home. Thankfully, what should have been an extremely long day tomorrow has been cancelled and I can do my standard hours – whatever they…

Black River is the third book in Will Dean’s excellent Tuva Moodyson series that I’m thoroughly enjoying. It can be read on its own but I would heartily recommend beginning with Dark Pines to get a real flavour and understanding of the characters and the history between them all. There are also certain moments referred to in Black River where it definitely benefits having read the previous books in the series. ⁣ ⁣ Tuva Moodyson is a journalist, a member of the deaf community and, in Black River, an escapee of Gavrik, a small town in Sweden that she grew up in. However, she returns in this novel to investigate the disappearance of her best friend, Tammy. In such a small community, everyone knows everyone else but somehow, nobody seems to know what has happened to Tammy. ⁣ ⁣ Worse still, when another woman goes missing, it seems to reveal some disappointing prejudice as although Tammy grew up in Sweden, her parents are Asian so she was classed as a “foreigner.” As a result, Tuva feels that the second woman’s disappearance is given more prominence. Tuva is desperate to find out what has happened to the women and why. However she isn’t prepared for the danger she puts herself in as she searches for answers. ⁣ ⁣ I love Tuva as a character. Not only is she written beautifully but the author gives her such resilience, steely determination and realistic flaws which instantly makes you warm to her as a reader. The setting of a small town in Sweden is atmospheric and even eerie in places as the seclusion of some areas makes for some incredibly nail-biting moments. ⁣ ⁣ As with all good thrillers, this story has some fantastic twists and turns, one of which I definitely didn’t see coming. It does make me wonder though how much more can happen in this town which seems to have had more drama and terrible events than your typical small community! I’m looking forward to finding out with the next book in the series. ⁣ ⁣ Four stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookreview #fourstarread #fourstarreview #blackriver #willdean #thrillernovels #tuvamoodyson #bookssetinsweden #bookswithrepresentation #bookworm https://www.instagram.com/p/CW0EivSr5NP/?utm_medium=tumblr

Red Snow By Will Dean
Publishers -  POINT BLANK
Hardback Release Day - 10th January
Synopsis
TWO BODIES
One suicide. One cold-blooded murder. Are they connected? And who’s really pulling the strings in the small Swedish town of Gavrik?
TWO COINS
Black Grimberg liquorice coins cover the murdered man's eyes. The hashtag #Ferryman starts to trend as local people stock up on ammunition.
TWO WEEKS
Tuva Moodyson, deaf reporter at the local paper, has a fortnight to investigate the deaths before she starts her new job in the south. A blizzard moves in. Residents, already terrified, feel increasingly cut-off. Tuva must go deep inside the Grimberg factory to stop the killer before she leaves town for good. But who’s to say the Ferryman will let her go?
Review
Having just finished reading Dark Pines and loving Tuva and the quirky cast of characters found in Gavrik I was eager to dive into Red Snow and what I found was another chilling and slightly unnerving look into the town and all the residents. Gavrik is such a chilling little town and some of the characters leave you feeling down right disturbed they all have some sort of creepy vibe to them that on more than one occasion left my skin crawling, some of them seem right sinister at times. Then there is the other characters that you just end up totally loving Tuva being the main one for me, I just totally rooted for her and her friendships are just so lovely you really don't want her to leave them all behind, at least that's the way I felt. Red Snow picks up a few weeks/months after the incidents of Dark Pines with a new murder/suicide mystery to solve and plenty of new characters to get engrossed by. Although this setting is beautifully written with plenty of descriptive atmosphere I will say I quite missed the atmosphere of the dark forest filled with all its animals that scare Tuva that complete sense of dread she feels in there was so vivid in Dark Pines although this one makes up for it with the atmospheric winter weather Red Snow was a creepy and compelling read that left me wanting more but completely disturbed at the same time and I can't wait to see what Tuva will be up to next time. Thank you so much to Anne Carter at Randomthingstours for having me on this blog tour and to Point Black Publishing for sending me an Advance reading copy in exchange for an honest review.
About The Author
Will Dean grew up in the East Midlands, living in nine different villages before the age of eighteen. He was a bookish, daydreaming kid who found comfort in stories and nature (and he still does). After studying Law at the LSE, and working in London, he settled in rural Sweden. He built a wooden house in a boggy clearing at the centre of a vast elk forest, and it's from this base that he compulsively reads and writes. He is the author of Dark Pines.

The Last Thing to Burn by Will Dean
I swear, I picked it up, but when I started reading it, I could not stop myself. This story follows "Jane", a woman who has been human trafficked from Vietnam to England. She thought she was going to be working and earning her freedom, but is instead sold to a man who allows her nothing. The twists and turns this book took were breathtaking and let me just say, I could not stop reading. The continuing downward spiral of what occurs is horrific but compelling. I could not get enough of the story of how "Jane" came to be Jane, and how this could be transferred to real life and how we can help to avoid these things in the future. Beware, this book might be triggering for some, but I think it approached the subject matter really well. This ebook was provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Another one bites the dust … but at least I feel like I have done something this week. I bought last minute theatre tickets for a start – quick trip to Bummygum to see Aladdin. Yes. Embracing my inner child as my outer adult is quite dull. And because we were in town early due to more than unreliable train service on the day, we called in at the Kitty Cafe too. a nice balm for the soul, watching…

Hi everyone and hope you’re having a lovely weekend. For today’s #stacksaturday I’m sharing the next five physical books on my TBR. Buddy reads and Kindle books will also be incorporated into the next month or so and Mr B is going to pick 5 extra books for me to read in October. ⁣ ⁣ 🔑 The Turn Of The Key - Ruth Ware⁣ I started this today and am already obsessed. It’s the story of a woman who goes to a remote Scottish house to work as a nanny and then ends up in prison, accused of murder.⁣ ⁣ 👑 Margaret The First - Danielle Dutton⁣ I’ve been meaning to get to this slim little book for AGES! This tells the story of Margaret Cavendish, a 17th century Duchess who is shy, gifted, wildly unconventional and eccentric. ⁣ ⁣ 💧 Black River (Tuva Moodyson #3) - Will Dean⁣ I’ve been enjoying these mysteries set in Sweden and I’m looking forward to the latest instalment! ⁣ ⁣ ⏰ 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World - Elif Shafak⁣ I’ve been SO excited about this and heard nothing but good things. The title refers to the last minutes of Tequila Leila’s life, a murdered prostitute. ⁣ ⁣ 👧 The Grace Year - Kim Liggett⁣ This dystopian tale focuses on the grace year in a community. This is where girls turn 16 and are seen to have magical powers over men, liable to turn wives mad with jealousy. That’s why they are banished so they can release all that magic into the wild and then return. ⁣ ⁣ I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! Have a lovely weekend everyone 🤗😘⁣ ⁣ ⁣#bookstagram #bookstagrammer #tbrpile #readingnext #excitedaboutthesebooks #theturnofthekey #ruthware #margaretthefirst #danielledutton #blackriver #willdean #tuvamoodyson #10minutes38secondsinthisstrangeworld #elifshafak #thegraceyear #kimliggett #thriller #historicalfiction #nordicnoir #literaryfiction #dystopianreads https://www.instagram.com/p/CUQN50wgErl/?utm_medium=tumblr

And the month (and year) continues to march on. Although, to be fair, that’s not such a bad thing now as I booked a holiday over the weekend and the sooner that arrives, the better. It’s not until next year, but it will be the first time I’ve gone abroad in 10 years (to the month of not quite the date). It’s far too easy to take things for granted, and to assume you will have forever to do all…
