Gold Dust Women: My Favorite Witchy Singers

Okay, before you burn me alive with “Where’s this certain artist?!” or “Why is this certain artist not here?!” or “Who even uses Tumblr these days?”, uhmmm me bish?? It’s my safe zone. Okay, the last question was a joke. 

Can I just say that the amazing women on this list are artists I listen to all the time. They’re my favorites, so chill (I’m open for suggestions tho). This is not Rolling Stone or Billboard magazine, it’s just ya girl’s good ol’ tumblr blog. Also, I’m not saying that all of them are literal w i t c h e s, it’s just that they portray the same aesthetic through their art and music. 

Alright, now that’s settled, let’s start.

1. STEVIE NICKS 

Do I even need to explain this? Stevie is undoubtedly the Etheral Queen of them all, the Pioneer, the O.G. Supreme whose lyrical soul and spellbinding voice echoes from the distant past to the inevitable future. Everything about her oozes with witchcraft and magic starting from her iconic top hat, to her millions of intricately made shawls, down to her platform boots. Only Stevie Nicks could pull off such Not-of-this-Era outfits and she has been doing it CONSISTENTLY. She’s in a timeline of her OWN. If you listen to her music, you would notice that every song of hers is poetry, like she’s telling a story or conjuring the unknown. She’s every witchy woman’s icon and that’s a fact.

Stevie is an untouchable yet gracious legend, we’ll always be a part of her sisterhood until the day of earth’s decay. Forever the Queen of Rock N’ Roll. 

Current Favorite Stevie Lyrics:  “ You can fly swinging from your trapeze, scaring all the people...but you'll never scare me.”  |   “Once in a million years a lady like her rises. Oh no, Rhiannon, you cry, but she's gone and your life knows no answer.”

Notice how I used the word “current”? Because it always changes depending on the state my life. Here’s a more detailed post on why I love her.   

2. KATE BUSH 

“Heathcliff, it's me, I'm Cathy, I've come home, I'm so cold! Let me in through your window!”

The eccentric beauty, Kate Bush made a genius, artistic move by writing a song about the book, Wuthering Heights, written by Emily Brontë in the 1800′s. Mind you, she was only 18 when she wrote and was the first song written by a female artist that landed on top the charts. Her voice is almost as distinctive as Stevie Nicks. While Stevie’s more nasal, commanding, wailing rock n’ roll goddess, Kate’s voice was high-pitched, alarming, ghostly, queer, and fairy-like. Everything about her is Performance Art. This is a woman who is not afraid to express herself.

For starters, you might think her music is strange and weird. Trust me, I felt the same way when I first heard her songs. But then, it began to grow on me leaving floral patterns on its path. 

Favorite Kate Bush Lyrics:  “Do you want to feel how it feels? Do you want to know that it doesn't hurt me? Do you want to hear about the deal that I'm making? You, it's you and me.”

3. FLORENCE WELCH 

This one is as obvious as Stevie Nicks. Florence Welch from the band, Florence + the Machine, is a poetess, a screaming banshee, and a full-pledged Sister of the Moon. She even started a witch coven during middle school. From her red carpet looks to her everyday outfits on Instagram, Florence vibrates powerful witch energy. Not to mention she has a song called “Which Witch” and that haunting music video for Big God with levitating women. Flo is not a woman to trifle with, I’ll tell you that.

In all her songs, Florence will bind you with magic and it’ll leave you breathless. If Stevie’s songs are poetry, hers are spells you could sing out loud. Also, if you haven’t seen her house tour, go check it now! 

Favorite Florence Welch Lyrics: “'Cause I am done with my graceless heart so tonight I'm gonna cut it out and then restart.”  |  “And in a moment of joy and fury I threw myself in the balcony like my grandmother so many years before me.”

4. LANA DEL REY

Remember when Lana used witchcraft to hex Donald Trump? It was all over the news and Twitter went wild. She was later quoted saying, “I really do believe that words are one of the last forms of magic and I’m a bit of a mystic at heart.” Oh, and she also did a collab with Stevie. 

We. Stan. Forever.

There was even a time that I MEMORIZED the monologue in the music video for Ride. ALL OF IT, HUNNY. 

Lana’s hypnotizing vocals together with her sixties baby doll dresses and Priscilla Presley hair is enough to convince me that she’s not of this era. She has a deep understanding of the beauty of past generation and the looming sadness and nostalgia that comes with it. Whenever I listen to her music, I imagine myself as a rockstar’s muse who is involved with the mafia but then I decided to leave him while taking his gun and convertible. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Favorite Lana Del Rey Lyrics: “Well, my boyfriend's in the band. He plays guitar while I sing Lou Reed. I've got feathers in my hair, I get down to Beat poetry. And my jazz collection's rare, I can play most anything.”

5. LORDE 

David Bowie didn’t call her the “future of music” for nothing. Just two albums under her belt, Lorde already proved that she will one day become a legend herself. Her music narrates an unparalleled interpretation of the anguish and fleeting charm of our youth. She knows what we’re feeling because she’s been there herself and is on the road to healing just like us. 

I think the message she’s trying to say is that we’re constantly losing grip on our innocence, and that life is often wicked so we need to accept that, grit our teeth, get on with it, and make art. She can also see color when she hears music. 

In my opinion, Lorde is one of the greatest artists of my generation. 

Favorite Lorde Lyrics: “The truth is I am a toy that people enjoy till all of the tricks don't work anymore, and then they are bored of me.”  |   “That slow burn wait while it gets dark, bruising the sun, I feel grown up with you in your car. I know it's dumb.” 

6. FKA TWIGS

Honestly, FKA Twigs is literally art in living form, a celestial angel that nobody can easily decipher. This woman has more talent in her fingertips than I could ever have in a lifetime. She somehow reminds me of a young Kate Bush; fearless, experimental, with an intoxicating voice. She never stops reinventing herself and it’s beautiful.

In FKA Twigs’ world, there are no limits, just endless galaxies. She pours her whole being in all of her songs and it shows. She’s not for the faint of heart, let me tell you that. 

Favorite FKA Twigs Lyrics:  “And I don't want to have to share our love. I try but I get overwhelmed. All wrapped in cellophane, the feelings that we had.” 

7. SKOTT 

I say this all the time, but I cannot write without Skott’s music blasting on my earphones. She grew up in a “forest commune run by outcast folk musicians” and was not exposed to contemporary music until her teen years. You would notice it in her songs. 

It’s hard to explain why, but listen to Skott’s music when there’s thunder and rain outside, then you’ll know why this woman is witchy. I kind of want her to be more popular and known, but then again, I also want to keep her to myself. Scratch that, LISTEN TO SKOTT’S MUSIC NOW. 

Start with Glitter & Gloss. 

Favorite Skott Lyrics: “Like an empty canvas, hear me cry. Like a masterpiece, I'm in your eyes. Now your colors are in front of me, we're a picture-perfect oddity.”

8. FIRST AID KIT 

I fell in love with this sister duo when I first heard their song, Emmylou, while browsing YouTube. It’s one of those moments of instant magic. Klara and Johanna Söderberg are a coven of their own. I would describe their music as “Woodland Folk laced with runes and wild flowers”. 

Their voices compliment each other so much that it reminded me of Simon & Garfunkel (they even performed their own version of America in front of Paul Simon!!!). First Aid Kit has this Woodstock seventies vibe, and you know me, I live for that sh*t. 

Favorite First Aid Kit Lyrics: “ When I run through the deep dark forest long, after this begun, where the sun would set, the trees were dead and the rivers were none. And I hope for a trace to lead me back home from this place, but there was no sound there was only me, and my disgrace.”

9. ZOLA JESUS

Zola Jesus’ music deserves to be played with an orchestra inside an abandoned castle in Transylvania while it gently rains and you’re wearing a white nightgown as you roam its empty halls. Is that too much?

 Not at all. 

Like Skott, I listen to Zola whenever I’m having writer’s block. If I ever finish my book, I’m gonna have to thank them. 

Favorite Zola Jesus Lyrics: “I'm on my bed, my bed of stones, but in the end of the night we'll rest our bones, so don't you worry. Just rest your head cause in the end of the night we'll be together again.”

10. ZELLA DAY

I LOVE ZELLA DAY’S MUSIC OH MY GOODNESS. My favorite songs of her are Sweet Ophelia, Hypnotic, Man on the Moon, and Hunnie Pie. ESPECIALLY HUNNIE PIE. I cry whenever I hear that song. It’s just so pure, calming, and beautiful. 

Her music belong in the psychedelic era. 

People labeled her as the “happier version of Lana Del Rey” but I think she’s in a league of her own. She deserves more recognition, honestly! 

Favorite Zella Day Lyrics: “The older we get there's an ocean of people in places we've chosen and you know how mama keeps saying “we've gotta stop the games we're playing””.

…I am racking my brains to remember BEST EVER SCENE but I cant?? Im at a loss??? Maybe the end scene in Dreamwork’s “Home” where Oh gives the “stone” to the Gorg, and explains why the Gorg wanted it so much?? I also love the scene in El Libro de la Vida where Manuel has to deal with the giant skeletal bull…any Cinderella movie the scene where Cinderella is able to leave her abusive fam forever…

Favorite scene in any text story (as I feel these more deeper) are

a)IDW Trypticon in Transformers:Salvation, his end…I only read this is TFWiki (as I JUST read the entire TFwiki on My Son just now) and…Trypticon across all Transformers series has been created for hate and destruction and has never had a say in his like…and the fact that he gets the opportunity to be free and…I cried….

b)scene in the book called “The Rapture Effect” where….basically, the AI, called “Core” in the story is trying to stop a war between an alien group and humanity, and eventually just…has an emotional breakdown and feels so bad about mistakes they made and feels alone and stressed, so two main protagonist humans help them out…and one of the humans have the same kind of insecurities and???? Its an amazing book okay, a recommended read, (though it has some rly drawn out tension and 0/10 female characterization,0/10 use of the diverseness of characters, needs a rewrite bc it has so much potential)

c)How to Train Your Dragon book series, not just a scene but…the whole arc with Furious, and Hiccup growing…aaaaa!!! (please read the series)

I have an older sister and brother, I have an ok relationship with them, not as close as I suppose people “normally” have tho…

I live in the suburbs BUT if I had to choose…and its a close call…farm! I love to garden, ( I grew okra this summer, and am trying to grow kale, salad, and swiss chard!), and love the countryside nature. I love city too tho….

5. what was the best grade for you? elementary? high school? College?

Definitely college. In each grade, I ALWAYS had some existential crisis, especially in college, and social anxiety! BUT…I can deal with those crises better than I can with school drama and social circles. In college, aint nobody care about what you do! So, my last two years in high school, I WAS in college at the same time, and hOO boy I would make a storytime about senior year problems!

…I don’t play video games, sorry!

…mmmm I have mixed feelings about Transformers…basically, I like certain concepts and characters in various series and know what generally happens in a good amount of continuities, but in no way would I sit down and read/watch a whole series…and I find it hard to talk to people in fandom and feel like people don’t like what I think, so I guess I am not a fan?? Maybe?? pseudofan??

Favorite characters….you cant make me choose just one…Trypticon, Metroplex, Astrotrain, Sunstorm, Skyfire, Starscream, Soundwave, Hound, Huffer, Tracks, Cosmos, Omega Supreme, Kappa Supreme…many I cant think on top of my head aaaa!!!

I have SEEN Yankee Candles before, but I don’t buy candles. My sister buys Bath and Body Work Candles, and I think they smell good!! Dont remember the smells I like, though I remember there was a tomato vine scented candle and it smelled like hell…

11. can you cook? what can you cook? if you can’t cook what food do you like above all else?

I love cooking!! I am taking a culinary class next semester!! I CAN cook, but am not the best admittedly…I am allergic to dairy, egg, and abstain from high fat and pork…I wish I could bake decadent vegan desserts but ??? how??? (I settle for Cinnaholic cinnamon rolls and other rare vegan delectables…)

I like making Tinola (chicken soup with ginger, chayote squash…I add ripe papaya to it) and garbanzo bean coconut curry! If I can’t cook, I’d love to get chicken from Thai BBQ, sushi/poke bowl, or El Pollo Loco. Due to nostalgia, my top favorite food of all time is Beef Gyudon from Yoshinoya, which is sadly not in my state!

Neither. I absolutely hate fizzy sweet drinks lol. The only thing I enjoy is kombucha and I’ve had ginger ale which I can tolerate. (btw did you know there’s something called bacon soda? I just found out and I’m absolutely horrified and disgusted. pls burn this knowledge out of my brain thank)

I don’t have a preference, nor am I overly invested in any of the two, so it depends. By Disney I really like Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare before Christmas and Frankenweenie, to pick a few. To sum it up (i’m taking this way too seriously and detailed lol, but I have insomnia ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) overall, chocolate flavour is better I guess, vanilla makes me vomit, it’s disgusting and I hate it. 12.vans or converse? forests are awesome - they are green and smell amazing, you can spot a lot of wild animals and the atmosphere is very serene and calming. I’ll always pick forests over beaches, unless the beach is all sand or small round marble stones, the water is clear without the detached, rotting algae stuff that floats around and ew, the sun has fucked off so I don’t get sunburnt (my skin always skips the tan stage right to red and I prefer pale skin anyway) and all sweaty and shit, there are NO people beside those I’m there with and I do NOT spot any animal while in the water that’s bigger than like 5cm. Because even though I love and respect it deeply, I’m genuinely afraid of sea life, I don’t care that there are lots of totally harmless creatures. …lmao, I feel like a rich asshole saying all that - way too many demands. (sorry sea/ocean, I love you, but you freak me the fuck out)

I have dogs, but I love both. With dogs, the love is more likely to be returned though :D

Are you named after someone?      nope. through all the legal names and nicknames, i’m surprisingly not named after anyone or anything. the first character of my chinese name, tho, is one character from a short poem. I’m the second to last character, so the next generation in our family will have the last character.

3. Do you like your handwriting?      it’s almost illegible and i love it. altho, i do have a variety of styles to write in, my normal script is quite pretty if you squint really hard.

Last movie you watched?        the last movie i watched was a 7/10 star, Uncontrollable Love (1&2). like... it was almost there. almost. but it’s hard to find LGBT movies from China/Taiwan that aren’t almost trash, so this one was comparatively good! the main couple was kind of a train wreck, but there was also a girl who played a beard for the main dude who turned out to be lesbian in the credits so that was cool since there are RARELY any lesbian characters in LGBT media for east asia. I would say there are actually more gay and trans stories than there are bi or lesbian. and women in gay films often are antagonizing and one dimensional so it was nice to see a female character who wasn’t the worst. also the bts for it was hilarious and full of fuzzy feelings and the actors really had good chemistry off screen.

Name: Claudia Bão-Bão Thi Trần (she goes by cloud or claude tho.)       Age: 17 School/College: (really) recent graduate of wakefield scholastic.

Powers: essentially, the ability to imbue / magnify life. think of it as a more literal take on personification. claudia can manipulate biotic elements around her to take the form of objects, (generally animals since it’s a lot easier to figure out how to make something move if it’s already got legs!) and have them act in a similar manner to a living being. she’s limited to things that already have a strong affinity to life (see: dirt, wood, bones, plants) but could eventually work her way up to things that are more manmade / abiotic (like metals & stone.) 

the ‘familiars’ don’t really have much initiative of their own, and are dependent on claudia’s ability to maintain their physical form (which also limits the number of creatures that she can have up and running around.) her emotions tend to leak through this bond and if she’s subjected to emotional duress, or the structure of the little critters is too damaged (like if someone pulled apart a bone dog’s ribcage) than her creations tend to fall apart and go back to being Inert Regular Materials. they also reflect the more positive side of her feelings: eg) small dirt dog galloping around and yipping when she’s excited about something.

Origin of Powers: there’s a family history, (although fragmented- most of the records are word of mouth or in a raggedy journal) of similar powers manifesting on the maternal side of her family!! generally it skips a generation and is more of a latent ability than one that’s fully realized (see: really good gardeners.) in claudia’s case though, it didn’t skip a generation between her and her mother so she grew up in a supportive environment and learned how to come to terms with it, (which is why she treats it as something relatively normal.)

Alignment: (hero/villain/neutral/etc) aspiring hero! leaning towards chaotic good, but striving to be more lawful good. she’s pretty dazzled by the idea of being a Paragon Of Goodness. (think atticus finch. she wants to be That Dignified, Have That Strong Of A Conviction In Her Beliefs, Be That Principled.)

Appearance notes: | x / x / x / x | claudia has black hair and deep brown eyes but generally dyes her hair whitish-blonde. she won’t admit it but it’s 100% to achieve that Cloud Aesthetic. sometimes she uses hairchalk to put in Fun Streaks Of Color but it’s generally blonde with a hint of her roots peeking through. prone to flyaways because of said bleaching. a warm complexion, a couple of beauty marks and assorted freckles along her arms and collarbone area. one deep dimple and thick lashes that she slathers in mascara anyways. 5′0 and Bitter about it. still slouches though, mostly out of habit and because at this point trying to correct it hurts her back. can loudly crack her knuckles / ankles / wrists whenever she wants. relatively straight nose. needs glasses but refuses to wear them (likes the idea of contacts, but is relatively antsy about putting lil tiny disks into her eyes so she just,, goes around with her vision a little fuzzy.) she tries to put effort into maintaining her presented appearance (think the entirety of forever 21 meets urban outfitters, with a little claires) but relaxes a lot more when she’s at home and wears basketball shorts and ratty t-shirts with cheesy slogans like ‘don’t bohr me!’ ‘cuttle me!’ and ENTIRELY too much nasa related paraphernalia.

Personality notes: claudia is very easily excitable and often chatters on just abit too much, letting things slide that are more things to keep to yourself or just inane commenting on the state of ‘current scientific affairs as they apply to the canon universe of like, asimov’s works.’ once she gets started on a rant, good luck getting her to stop. huge scifi nerd. she’s very expressive and will make it very obvious how she’s feeling: although she often uses pretty simple wording because she can get tonguetied when it comes to Explaining Feelings: (”i’m sad right now because you said that so goodbye.”)

she’s very passionate about what she loves, which just so happens to be the idea of pure, uncorrupted justice, scifi, biology (in particular, ocean oddities) and the characters that populate the books on her shelves. she’s a voracious reader and will eagerly hold miniature lectures on subjects like ‘the symbiotic relationships in insects: an overview.’ she loves the sound of her own voice, but is just as eager to learn as she is to teach. very touchy feely, prone to clasping peoples hands and gesturing wildly with hers when she’s trying to really get her point across. Backstory notes: claudia grew up as the only child of a single mother, her father having run out the door before her first birthday. her father pays child support and is vaguely present for twice a year outings with his daughter, something that the court established around the time claudia was 7. she is ambivalent on the whole subject of her father, and is very close to her mother. she had a relatively happy childhood, although she was rather socially isolated. she spent more time romping around in the forest out by the back of the house than at playdates. she still feels a little at odds when it comes to social scenes but tries her best to make friends. she moved to NYC to attend highschool (and at some point, university) after a long stint of homeschooling and was thrilled at the prospect of having all those Highschool Movie Dreams come to life. (she was sorely disappointed, but has come to terms with the fact that hollywood is not exactly an accurate source.)

most of her summers have been split between the beach and the recently re-established garden. she doesn’t visit her father, but keeps in relative touch with her halfsiblings that live in new orleans through snail mail and email. her powers first started manifesting around ~5 years old. the turning point was when she threw a tantrum and the yellow rose bush uprooted itself and tried to chase her mother around the house. upon realizing that the family’s ‘gift’ was rearing its head in her tiny, explosive kindergartner, claudia’s mother immediately started lessons on how to “play nice with her ‘fairy powers.’ ” by this point, claudia’s learned basically all she can from her mother but still keeps up the habit of practicing in the back garden with her for old times sake. she’s experimenting with expanding her influence to manmade materials with the help of an old journal for guidance, but has had little to no luck. lots of dirt dogs, though.

claudia lives at home with her mother, who is still over protective of her daughter and insists on her phoning her before she goes out anywhere with friends or to check in when she comes back home. when she does move out the expectation is that she’ll take along maximilian, the family heirloom that is literally a pile of dog bones. max is independent from any one particular trần at this point, has a lot of personality (or really, sass and an obstinate nature) from being ‘alive’ for so long, and no one knows at this point who originally made him. it’s a tradition to pass him along for ‘protection’ although really all he does is Clack. right now claudia’s immediate goals are: make friends, attend university (preferably nyu) and move out, in that order.

3 Character Facts:

she’s absolutely delighted that her given name (Bão-Bão) roughly translates to storm. she thinks it’s absolutely adorable that it matches up with her self given moniker of ‘cloud.’ one of her secret pleasures is that depending on context, it can also mean ‘protect’ which is actually one of the main reasons that she’s so moon eyed over the idea of Being A Cool Hero. she’s a nerd

claudia’s main ambition in terms of experimenting with her powers is being able to animate some sort of robot-esque creation to keep her company. it’s mostly because she heavily relates with the dual wonder and repulsion ais generally have when it comes towards integrating themselves into human society in books, so having a little robo pal to commiserate in that feeling with sounds like a Good Time to her.

claudia likes startling people by cracking her ankles under desks to make them think something has fallen off the table? she tries to do the same thing with her knuckles but that’s more obvious. she’s kind of in love with the whole romanticized ‘twin sisters who conned basically everyone into thinking they could commune with the dead through ankle cracking and weights in petticoats’ idea and seeks to emulate that on a tiny fraction of a level.
