So I've been deeply pulled into the Radiosnake pairing bc of your fantastic writing! Problem is, now I have fic ideas but no knowledge of the Hazbin background. Can you tellI me where I can get more Hazbin info? I've only watched the pilot and read your stuff. I heard there were comics??

That is an excellent question anon, because right now it is really hard to get Hazbin background easily.

Okay, so, the canon info on Hazbin Hotel can be sort of sorted into four tiers, from most to least canon.

Tier 1: The Definitely Canon

There is, of course, the pilot. And then there is an Angel Dust prequel comic, only seven pages of which have been released so far. We’ve been told it’s gonna be finished and we’ve had glimpses of in-progress prequel comics for a couple other characters—most prominently Alastor’s and Charlie’s—but so far that unfinished Angel Dust comic is the only one that’s been officially released.

Finding the in-progress comic pages is... a challenge. Nobody, as far as I can tell, has been specifically collecting all of the pages we’ve seen so far. I was able to scrounge up:

There’s a smattering more canon panels on the artist faustisse’s twitter, but I haven’t dug them all out, and some of the posts I’m gonna link in a lil bit have a glimpse of another panel.

If you haven’t already heard of Helluva Boss, I recommend looking into it as well. It’s a second series being created by the same folks, different cast of characters but set in the same version of Hell, so any canon details we learn in Helluva also apply to Hazbin.

Earlier this month, during a BLM charity stream hosted by show artist Ashley Nichols—she runs regular streams under the title “HuniCast”—they released a few sneak peaks of future Helluva scenes, all compiled here.

And that’s it for canon. Two pilots, a music video, a smattering of future scenes, part of one comic, a few WIP pages/panels from other comics.

Tier 2: Pseudo-Canon

Everything else we currently know about Hazbin (and Helluva) are things that the creators have told us. Consequently, they’re all pseudo-canon—and likely subject to change in the future as the shows and comics are further developed and released. Some details that were released/described in the past have been contradicted at other times, or else radically changed by the time the pilot came out.

(For example, when Alastor was first created years and years ago as an OC with no plans for Hazbin, he was a demon deer who could shapeshift into a human shape—now he’s a demonized human with a few deer traits. And Charlie and Cherri Bomb used to look very different.)

So until and unless they make it into canon, all these pseudo-canon details are subject to change and should be taken with a grain of salt—but, they also comprise most of what we know about the characters’ backstory and the as-yet-unaired characters.

Pseudo-canon info on Hazbin is scattered mainly between two sources: the creators’ twitter accounts, and livestreams where they take questions and talk about the making of the show. If you and livestreams do not get along (my ADHD and livestreams do not get along), or if you don’t want to wade years and years back into twitter accounts to dig up every scrap of info on the characters the creators have ever mentioned, collating all the pseudo-canon info is gonna be hard. (It’s gonna be hard even if you do want to sit through the streams and dig through all their tweets.) Lots of fans, me included, depend on the absolutely heroic work of various fans who are willing and able to watch hours-long streams and collate a list of canon factoids released during the streams. Dollymoon’s Hazbin Hotel Facts - PART ONE (Shoutout again to dollymoon for compiling these, we’ve never spoken but I am eternally grateful for this service. Dollymoon’s posts are THE single most reliable compilation of Hazbin Hotel’s nebulous pseudo-canon facts that I have found to date, including both links to the sources and timestamps where applicable. Dollymoon’s URL has changed since making this post so the “read more” link doesn’t work but the “source” or “reblogged from” links direct correctly to the new blog. And those are all the masterposts of factoids I’ve managed to collect. If anyone has more masterposts, chuck ‘em at me.

Even this isn’t all the knowledge that’s been released about the show. The posts that dig the farthest back are Dollymoon’s, and even they don’t comprehensively cover all of Hazbin’s production. A couple of these characters, Vivziepop created as a teenager, so there’s some truly ancient concept art floating around out there that will have details that probably aren’t canon anymore... but might still be until something happens to actively contradict them.

Tier 3: The Wiki

The wiki is kind of an absolute mess. It’s a chaotic blend of things actually seen in the pilots/comic, things mentioned at some point in some stream somewhere, and wild fan speculation based on what they headcanon as plausible based on the above, all mixed together with very little indication for which is canon, pseudo-canon, fanon, or speculation. Most of the statements on the wiki don’t have citations.

(And, on top of that, half the main characters’ info gets split up into separate tabs instead of just having a normal-ass wiki page, AND their image galleries are on COMPLETELY SEPARATE pages that are linked to in one of the tabs, and the most important characters all have TWO SEPARATE GALLERIES. Which doesn’t have anything to do with the quality of the facts hidden underneath those tabs, but nevertheless drives me up the wall.)

Some things on the wiki were added according to info released so long ago it’s probably changed by now. Some are possibilities that got reported as facts. Other things on the wiki have unambiguously changed, or else are just flat-out incorrect. (For instance, at this moment Alastor’s page still lists him as an overlord, even though it's been confirmed that Alastor is not an overlord despite his power level because he isn’t interested in and didn’t pursue that position, per this stream. For a little bit, somebody’s fanart of their headcanon human Alastor got added to the wiki as concept art.)

tl;dr: the wiki should never be trusted as a primary source. The wiki’s better than it used to be. Even so, at this time, it’s only trustworthy to fill in the gaps of what you already know is true from other, better sources.

The thing it’s good at is it more or less compiles all the known info all in one place. Trying to figure out who the hell this Vox guy is is really hard if you’re reading for mentions of him in compilations of a dozen different streams, much less if you’re trying to comb through those dozen streams yourself, plus a dozen more, plus three different artists’ twitters. In comparison, it’s really easy to, say, just go look at Vox’s wiki page, where all the trivia is compiled. (And Vox’s page is actually one of the better cited on the wiki. Look at all those numbers!)

So, if you need to find out who this character is you’ve never heard of before, if you want to see a full list of the thus far named characters, if you don’t remember whether Alastor likes coffee or tea, if you want to know what Angel’s twin sister looks like, if you need a reminder of Sir Pentious’s death year... check the wiki. It’s an okay starting point.

But, if you see a “fact” on the wiki that you yourself don’t remember from straight out of the pilot, and it doesn’t have a citation that links to a tweet or a stream... regard it suspiciously. And do not trust it unquestioningly as fact until and unless you have seen the source.

Tier 4: Noncanon Creator Shitposting

I’ve mentioned Ashley’s HuniCast streams a couple times. The biggest draw of them is that she usually gets several of the voice actors in the streams, where they’ll happily say nonsense in their character voices. For the most part, they’re not sharing any actual canon info they’ve been given on their characters, just goofing around pretending to be their characters. Nevertheless, a lot of the things that happen in streams get accepted as broad fandom headcanons, like Alastor being into dad jokes. (My favorite, for obvious reasons, is this one.)

It’s easy to find the source audio for all this wonderful nonsense by searching youtube for “HuniCast highlights,” and then rummaging around for animatics people make out of the audio. The only one noncanon video of this sort I can think of that didn’t originally come from HuniCast is a lone one from Alastor’s singing voice (who’s a different voice actor than his speaking voice).

So, obviously, none of these are canon. But they do come from some of the people actually involved in the creation of the show, and they are in the characters’ canon voices, so a whole lot of people treat them as semi-canon anyway. (Even the wiki lists “dad jokes” among Alastor’s likes, which to my knowledge hasn’t come up anywhere except for HuniCast streams.) Since they’re so broadly-known, they’re worth knowing about as important sources of fanon, even if you don’t want to adopt them into your own headcanons. They’re basically the same level of canon as blooper reels.

Haha, thanks for the tag @breakeven2007, I’m always a slut for answering questions.

Since I forgot to put the rules on the post last time I got tagged, I’ll go ahead and do that this time. Basically, if you’re tagged, you answer the questions your tagger left at the bottom of the post, then you tag some other folks and leave your own questions at the bottom for the next people to answer!

I’ll do this under the break again.

1. What OC makes you want to tear your hair out and why?

Okay, when it come to writing a character, like getting the writing down when I’m writing them, it would probably be Jay. They spend so much time locked away in their lab that they talk to their androids more than they even see other people. They have shaky morals and I always want to write them as being better than they are.

With the way characters act and general ‘what are you doing?’ tearing my hair out, I’d say it’s Sawyer. Because most of my writing is daydreams and I’m writing the things that happened in my daydream, I write with the knowledge of how much those decisions fucked me over. Sometimes I wish I could go back and whisper in my past-self’s ear saying “NO!”

Retrospect is 20/20 and I hate it.

2. Do you like going back and reading old writing or looking at old drawings? Why or why not?

Oh my god, yes. To a point. I love reading 2014-onward writing. Before that, there are things I should just let die. I have a completed Johnny the Homicidal Maniac/”Gory Demise” by Creature Feature fanfic in the depths of my DA, for Christ’s sake.

The worst part is, on my particularly nostalgic days, I have thought about rewriting that ;^;

But I like looking back and seeing how far I’ve come in my writing. I like seeing how different projects change the way that I write. If I read my god-awful writing for 2010, I can actually start to believe it when people tell me my writing is good. Because no matter how many flaws it might have, It’s better than it was. That’s all that matters in the end.

3. Have you ever had a daydream so long and extensive you actually have to catch yourself before writing all that shit down because it was good.

HA yes.

I’d like to say that all of my daydreams that I end up writing are like that, but I know that isn’t true. I waited about a month before I started writing Breaking Furnace, and it took one of my friends asking questions about what in my daydreams was bothering to get me to write Sequence of Regrettable Happenings. I started writing Trollhunter’s: Subverted a few says after the daydream started, but I wish I’d started sooner. So many little details were lost from the first couple days.

The daydream sequence that brought Journey to the Center of Our Mind around is what I’m thinking of for this one. So much just started happening at once and I started writing it as soon as I could tear myself away from the actual daydream.’

On a vaguely related note, the beginning plot for Savior Destroy came out of an actual dream, and so did Damien, one of the paras/characters I have.

4. What is the hardest genre for you to write?

I’m not sure if this actually counts as a genre, but the hardest thing for me to write is physical fights. I’ve never experienced an actual fight, and I have a hard time balancing pacing, action, emotion, all of that stuff.

5. How often do you pull all-nighters (if you do)?

I don’t really pull all-nighters, but I come close a lot. I normally go into staying up past 2am expecting to stay up the whole night because I used to all the time. I never do, though, because I get tired and can’t function. I’m already so tired all the time, I have a hard time when I reach the middle point between normal levels and the I’ve-been-awake-for-36-hours-I’ve -never-felt-so-alive high. I miss the manic feeling of staying up the whole night, but it’s probably not a bad thing that I can’t seem to get there anymore.

I normally just end up making bad decisions lmAO

6. Is your writing better with or without sufficient sleep?

Without. I do good writing between like 8pm and 6am which is why I try to stay up so often, even if I know I’ll fail.

7. Do you have a favorite fandom? If so, why?

Favorite fandom, not really. If I stay on the very surface of fandoms, they’re fine but most of the time if I go any deeper I just end up getting uncomfortable so I tend to not delve. I probably like what I’ve seen of the Dragon Age fandom the most, though. Particularly DA2 because I will fight on my stance that DA2 is the best game in the series.

I just like things. I like the things and I especially like it when I watch/read/listen to things without my brain deciding to give me another 500,000 page-worth daydream to obsess over. Can I just be a casual fan for once in my goddamn life please.

8. What book would you recommend to anyone who asked, regardless of personal taste? (Doesn’t have to be your favorite.)

The Belgariad and The Mallorean. It’s actually two five-book series, but they are everything to me. It’s a fantasy series by David Eddings (and his wife, Leigh Eddings, though she wasn’t credited until much later), and it’s a wonderful coming of age story.

The Belgariad is really focused, most of the characters (except for the protag of course) know roughly what they need to do and who the bad guys are and where they need to go.

The Mallorean delves a lot deeper into the particulars of war. That even the ‘bad guys’ aren’t necessarily evil or irredeemable. There’s a lot more confusion, mystery, and the unknown plays a big part in how the story plays out and the decisions the characters make.

They’re Good Books.

9. Is there an author that you can’t stand? And conversely, one that’s on your auto-read list? Why?

I think I’ve answered a question similar to this on this blog. I haven’t really found an author that I hate, partially because if I start a book and can’t get through it I tend to forget that it and its author exists. Mostly, though, it’s because of how writing grows and a writer can do terrible work in one genre and be great in another. For example, I don’t really like most of James Patterson’s work because the way he writes crime fiction is a little too much for me. I love his YA modern fantasy/science fiction writing, though! Maximum Ride and (okay god I can’t remember what the series was called, like ‘W’ or something, it’s about witches) were genuinely enjoyable, even if they have some big continuation and plot issues that come along with the past pace at which authors like JP write.

I’d say that I want to read every piece of writing that Daniel Handler has ever created as Lemony Snicket. The voice in his work is SO GOOD and fun to read. I’ve been reading TSOUE to my sister and I’m noticing more and more that went completely over my head when I first read it in middle school. Some jokes that are more relatable now that I’m older, and I fully appreciate how terrifying Count Olaf is as a villain. I’m also in the process of reading ATWQ, which takes place in the childhood of Lemony and his first mission as an apprentice in the VFD.

10. If you were a published author, would you support fanfiction of your work? (This is tumblr so I kinda assume so, but some people wouldn’t want someone to “mangle” their work, if you will.) Would you support complete crack ships or ships that you didn’t agree with canonically?

This is kind of a double edged sword, to be completely honest. Since, even in the works I could publish, the main character is a version of myself from my daydreams, fanfiction could be a little weird for me to read.

But, like, fanfiction?? And fanart????? Of something I wrote?? That would be awesome. It would be cool to see how people see my characters, even if they completely fuck up the actual characterization. There is only one noncanon ship that I wouldn’t just say ‘oh, okay, not what I had in mind but fine.’ I wouldn’t ask people not to write it because you know write what you want, but Sawyer and Dominic is something that doesn’t sit well with me.

A fun story relating vaguely to question 7. Once, I was drawing during the summer with the window open. A dragonfly zoomed in as I was about to close the window and go to sleep, so I abandoned my room in terror, screaming, and slept in the living room instead.

1. Have you ever been out of the country? If so, where? Yup! I’m in Europe so it’s more common! I’ve been to Spain (Mallorca, Fuerteventura) and Disneyland Paris for holidays as a kid, and for work I’ve been to France (Lyon, Marseille), Netherlands (Noordwijk), Switzerland (Zurich) and USA (Hawai’i) three times :). The best was Hawaii by far, got to use the telescopes, and the islanders are genuinely lovely people!   

2. Onions - yes or no? YES they’ll in most things I cook.

3. What’s the best kind of cookie? No contest, Sainsburys raspberry and white chocolate. BUT if you’re using the term cookie to mean any type of biscuit, I am rather partial to Viennese sandwiches.

4. What do you think draws you in to make you attach to a show or character? The greater the potential dorkiness the better. Guess that’s why I love Dragon Ball, they’re all so ridiculous. I’m not one for ‘badass’ characters.

5. What has made you smile today? Read lovely feedback on an arts I did - haven’t posted it yet but will with the next textbook chapter. I’m rather proud of it as it shows my progress, so was nice to hear from other people that they liked it!

6. Do you collect anything? Ah, no sorry! Cringey memories? Hehe!

7. Do you have a favorite (or funny) tumblr memory? Seeing my friend @jaalamadarav‘s BIOWARE news blog take off :) I get to point at them like YEAHHHH! They’re really committed and a lovely person.

8. What’s one thing you wish your parents had taught you earlier in life? How to drive at 17 (earliest age in UK). My Dad freaked out when I moved the car he didn’t want to teach me after, and I couldn’t afford lessons until mid-20s. I have my license and can drive fine, but not confident if there are other cars.

9. Do you live in the past, in the present, or for the future? Cringe about the past (learning not to), get excited about the future, and daydream of alternative presents aka stories aka DB let’s be real.

10. What’s a typical day like for you? 7:15 wake up and play with the buns, get ready, 8:30 leave to get to work for 9:30, be a scientist until 5:30, hour getting home again and spend the evening with the buns, my partner, drawing and writing. Sometimes go to the beach in the evening no matter the weather. I’ve been drawing every day since November, and now writing. It’s fun! 

11. Do you have siblings? If yes, do you have any routines that you share or specific things you do together? If no, do you wish you did? I do! Younger sis! We watch Teamfourstar together when we meet up. Also recently found out that, even though we haven’t discussed music preferences other than our particular faves for basically eight years (she is the biggest fan of RHCP going), we like the same recent music O_O.

12.  Have you ever seen a ghost?  If yes, how?  If no, do you believe in them? Nope, not seen one and I don’t believe in them, sorry. Taken too many physics classes and can’t see where ghosts would fit in. Whilst physics isn’t finished there’s some gaps that are closed :(. Though I am easily scared in the dark!

13.  Where’s the coolest/greatest place you’ve ever been? Working at a telescope on the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawai’i. At night if your eyes adjust, you can just about read by the light of the stars alone. If I could upload one particular group of memories to the internet for people, it would be those. OH WAIT I DID (don’t watch the first two videos they’re awful, was just trying my hand at it LOL). Telescope tour you can’t actually get as public :)

14.  Do you ship any rare pairs?  If so, what pairing? Trunks x Mai and Goten x Marron (when adults, obvs). Marten is my only noncanon ship I guess, otherwise I roll with canon. I’m a little invested in Marten now for some mad reason (I blame @acelious) but if the characterisations diverge from my headcanons if Super goes beyond EoZ, I’ll just accept whatever they give there.

15.  What’s your favorite smell? Wish I could say something sensible but probably petrol <_<;. Vanilla if I’m not risking killing brain cells? Haha!

16.  If your leisure time is limited to just enough for one activity, do you choose to watch tv, play games, read, draw…? Apparently draw? Though textbook right now so drawing/writing, textbook counts as one thing I’m going to pretend :).

17.  Is your hair naturally curly or straight? Tis wavey! I can straighten and curl it and it mostly stays. Humidity makes it wavey but it doesn’t look too bad.

18.  Would your ideal dream home be in a city or rural area? Rural by the sea but with a train station :). I live in a seaside town now!  

19.  How many languages do you speak? To quote Bruce Willis, I only speak two languages - good English and bad English. I can speak Cockney Rhyming Slang! Didn’t even know half the words I used were CRS until I saw a list of them, haha!

20.  What’s your favorite holiday? Camping! Haven’t done it in a while but would like to again!

21.  What’s your favorite music genre? Well according to what I’m liking on Spotify at the moment it’s the New Wave/Synth Pop resurgence and Indie Pop (aka, Walk the Moon etc).

22.  Are you an introvert or an extrovert?  Introverted! I have been known to nap at parties when it gets too much. Is just my way. (Noncanon) SHSL Ballerina, Airi Haruna, memories

(This one is a pretty long post! If you just want to read a really shortened version of the post that doesn’t have a bunch of little memories, then you can read that Here! Additionally, my words may seem a bit jumbled or out of place here... It’s currently after 3 AM.)

- My mother was Japanese, while my father was French; And thanks to them, I was fluent in both languages! ...Though, soon after I was born, my parents got a divorce. My mother got custody of me, but I *did* get to visit my father very often!

- I thought that talents were pretty nice, but I never let myself become *obsessed* with talent, like some of the other students around me made the mistake of doing. It felt like everyone around me was either obsessed with a “Lack of Talent”, or that they were obsessed with maintaining the skillset of being the best at what they do. That being said, I did practice ballet for a long time everyday... It was so calming, and it’s not like practicing will have a negative on anyone most of the time. 

- I did work hard to be as great as I was at ballet, but I did it because, like I said, it was calming. It’s hard to tell if it was ever me naturally being gifted in ballet, or if I just enjoyed practicing so much that I was considered the best at it.

- While I was a student in Hope’s Peak Academy, a couple classes would “volunteer” to work in the Daycare for a week to help out some of the Super Elementary School Level Students. The SHSL students would all be required to walk around the room for the first hour and meet every SESL Group in the room by the time the hour was up. They would then get to pick out which group of kids to assign themselves as a Helper to.

- A Group has around 2-4 SESL Students, and one SHSL Student Helper who would take All Responsibility for their group. Each group had a name with one letter followed by one number. 

- My group was V2. It had two SESL Students; Twins; The SESL Prince, and the SESL Child. No one else wanted to be their Student Helper because they enjoyed calling themselves “The New Twin Masterminds”; and every time a SHSL Student would tell them what Masterminds do, they just got even more interested. I for one, absolutely *loved* their devotion to their dreams... It sparked a demented sense of hope into my soul, and I wanted to do anything to help them fulfill their despair-inducing dreams... I wanted everyone in the *world* to know of The New Twin Masterminds; I had wanted their titles to immediately terrify anyone who heard them. The thoughts that I could be of assistance to them- Of important assistance- *Those* are what made me succeed in becoming the Ultimate Hope, and what made me succeed in turning the young twins into the Ultimate Despair. 

- The *twins* were actually supposed to be *triplets*; but their mother died right after giving birth to the both of them... Because of their mother’s death, their father grew distant and couldn’t stand to see the two boys... To think, that they both could have lived a life without either parents... It was heart-breaking in what I viewed as “The Best Way Possible”. They grew up living their lives without anyone and anything but a tutor, the rest of the castle staff (that did their bests to avoid the twins), a large (almost empty-feeling) home/castle, and nothing to do but learn and go outside to play fake sword-fighting. And for their titles, the reason one of the boys was titled the SESL Child is because his brother was already titled the SESL Prince and neither of them had what anyone, other than me, would consider “talent”.

- I was the eldest Mastermind of the three, and really, I was the one who should have been blamed for most of everything. The children were too young to know exactly what their actions would cause; and though they were both incredibly smart, it was very easy for *anyone* to quickly be able to understand what the boys’ next actions would be... Assuming that neither of them would have blurted out their plans if I didn’t warn them to be a bit more careful. I knew that what I was doing would be considered morally wrong, and I was the one who guided the twins and our traitors through everything that happened. Despite this, I actively refused to be called the Main, or Only, Mastermind... Everything I was doing there was for the well-being of the twins, and I only viewed myself as a minor Helper to the two... The Nurturer of their plans... The Protector of their Hopes of future Despair. I viewed all of us as equal; especially the Traitors, as they too saw just how wonderful the twins were!

- Speaking of the Traitors, we had at least five groups of SESL Students (that included their SHSL Student Helpers) thanks to the twins being very good at making friends with the other trouble-makers in their class. Of couse, we called the traitors “Our Special Traitors”, and they called the twins two nicknames I gave to each of them... “Prince Prince” and “Prince Knight” (The SESL Child had always wanted to be a Knight.)

- The twins had Our Special Traitors call me nicknames like, “My Queen”, “Queen Mastermind”, and “Mother Mastermind”. These nicknames were given to me by the twins for being the only mother-figure ever in their lives.

- The Traitors also all bowed anytime after speaking with me, and I thought that was adorable... I think the twins convinced them to do that.

- When the twin masterminds and I were coming up with a name for our killing game, they wanted to copy the name of the original killing game; but instead, I asked them what they thought about the name “Killing Elementary School Life”. It wasn’t too different, but they loved it anyways. 

- They faked their deaths very early on (the second day, maybe?) by making a Monokuma explode. They never told me beforehand, so I actually thought they were dead at first, even though I noticed they were scheming something beforehand. I went into a terrible depressive episode over it until a couple days later when the twins came out of hiding to tell me they were alright and that I needed to somehow fake my death in order to help them with their plans. I still pretended to be in the extreme grieving process and then convinced my friend and special traitor, The SHSL Pathologist (I’m pretty sure that was their title?), to help me fake a suicide. We then found out a way where I could survive literally hanging myself in the bathroom, while being “dead” through the entire investigation process.

- My suicide note basically said how I blamed myself for the twins’ deaths, as I was the one that had complete responsibility for them, and that I just couldn’t take the awful feelings anymore.  

- Everyone thought it was a homicide at first, but dropped the case after not finding any evidence to back up their claims. 

- ... We actually locked a *Ton* of elementary school, and high school, students in 1 1/2 rooms of the school until a couple days after I faked my death... How did we manage to pull that off? We started opening more rooms of the school later on, of course, but still... There was only a snack room and it’s small one-person bathroom available for the start of the killing game.

- I was the Mastermind of more than one killing game, actually... I controlled *at least* three.

-  I was also considered the Ultimate Hope for the future of the killing games and for being the undying Hope for the two SESL Students who wanted to be, and successfully became, the New Ultimate Despairs.
