uhh the monster being the embodiment of society's constant greed for violence, trauma, a spectacle to feed our little monkey brains for the slightest oomph, tYpically at the expense of minority groups

the monster is a living being and i rly like the idea of it as personified camera!! she is a creature that must be wrangled, spirit broken but as they say in the flashback with oj and his dad,, there are things that can't be tamed. the media and the film industry is not the friend of creators like the haywoods and jupe (it's something that will eat them alive if looked straight in the face OR take them out indirectly anyways (like the dad killed by $$ in the very beginning))

the Gordy/monkey violence stuff!!!! the way the violence is specifically filmed indirectly (audience never sees more than the chimp, some blood, and the monkey's back while maiming, tearing, ripping etc etc)

the way jupe survives without a scratch as a kid and that leads to a sort of arrogance(?? more like misplaced hope actually) in the way he handles Jean Jacket. Jupe falls victim/succumbs to the spectacle of Hollywood,, using the monster as a prop in his act (callback to gordyyyy) which only serves to feed it and in arrogantly proclaiming himself as the one it "trusts", trying to enter a contract with her, Jupe looks it in the eye thinking them equals and is consumed

(ngl the gordy/jean jacket parallel and Jupe's general plot line is so intriguing to me,, baby boy has so much to unpack)

overall love the current resurgence of the black cowboy genre + space craze alien stuff, was nOT expecting a crossover btwn the 2 but im enjoying it to the fullest :]

favorite scene: easily the one towards the end when oj and emerald do the "eyes on you" gesture!! and emerald finally gets her own Jean Jacket :) i love when the sibling-feels hit

critiques: not many, mainly just a lil sad that ghost never came back idk i thought they were setting him up for something more and then they..didnt go anywhere with that rly? maybe im missing something but :<

also i tink it's bc im not used to sitting still for so long but. lotta exposition in the first half and middle chunk. berhaps im just an insufferably impatient little lad tho
