hush. by wankerville (T, 41K) This author just writes beautifully and this is one of those high school AUs that has lingered with me long after I read it. They capture the longing and want and self-hatred and confusion of being that age and being queer, so so well. BTW, there’s smut in this fic. I’m not sure why it was rated T.

don’t have to go to the pool by kingsoftheimpossible (E, 12K) I just loved this one. This author captures the overwhelm and insecurity and desperation of a high school crush so well. Plus, the shaving scene is ridiculously sexy.

into another (another) serotonin overflow by mercutionotromeo (E, 11K) I love the way this author captures the overwhelm of teenage lust and pining in this one. And at the same time, there’s something so gentle about the way the two of them are with each other.

kiss with a fist (is better than none) by orphan_account (E, 7K) Although it’s been orphaned, it was originally written by Ashtarok whose work I always have liked. I really enjoyed the dynamic in this one and the smut is top notch.

Search and Rescue Me by wildhalos (E, 17K) Footie/swim team captains get stuck in the locker room over the weekend. What happens next? A sweet and sexy fic, with a bit of pining thrown in, that’s what.

Smoke Dreams from Smoke Rings by objectlesson (E, 19K) Gemma and Louis are friends, Harry has a crush, Louis finds an excuse to hang out together. This author always nails the teenage overwhelm and infatuation – it’s one of my favorite things about their fics. This one includes oblivious Harry, determined Louis, and ultimately two boys admitting their feelings. Good stuff! (Edit: this fic has been deleted. The link is now to a Dropbox folder to download it)

Shake Me Down by AGreatPerhaps12 (NR, 209K) this fic will run you through the wringer, but it’s really a great read. I really like the way the author took the boys from enemies to friends to boyfriends, and how we got to see how protective and supportive Louis became towards Harry.

Red Brick Heart by hazmesentir (E, 98K) this is one of those fics I read very early on upon entering the fandom (so long ago that it’s considered a “classic” and is literally among the first few bookmarks I made). So I unfortunately can’t remember much detail, and people didn’t tag anything back then, but I do remember that having Louis as an unexpected uni roommate brought on Harry questioning his sexuality. Plus, I remember loving this fic and there being some excellent ot5 friendship.

One Way or Another by makesmewannatsss (E, 208K) I’m going to be very honest here. I think I might have started this as a WIP and then not finished it. HOWEVER, I seem to have really liked the start of it. 🙈Uni AU, Louis is the closeted captain of the school’s football team.

She shouldn't have to fight for Harry, because Harry is her girlfriend. Even if she seems to have forgotten that. Or the one where Louis is jealous and insecure, and all Louis wants is for her girlfriend to want her, and she's scared that Harry doesn't (only of course she does.)

Star’s note: this is one of my all time favourite fics in the entire universe. a mermaid au that is both larry and ziall? sign me the f up!

Summary: She’s so gone it’s not even funny. It really isn’t funny because falling in love with your best friend is such a stupid, idiotic, dumb thing to do, and there’s only ever a happy ending in romantic comedies. Louis (she claims, loudly and publicly whenever anyone will listen despite the fact that she’ll watch them with Harry any time Harry asks her to) hates romantic comedies. The thing is, when it really comes down to it, Louis never stood a chance.

Star’s note: i remember when i read this thinking that it was just so utterly wonderful. i need to reread this soon.

Warning: Includes bad jokes, soppy birthday traditions and stupid amounts of giraffe references.

"Like in films," Louis says, rolling her eyes but she bounces up on her tiptoes to press a sticky kiss onto Harry's lips. "Regular Bonnie and Clyde we are. Just you and me, baby." Or the one where they're in the world's most famous girlband and Louis has a surprise for Harry's 21st birthday that might involve a funfair followed by lots of orgasms.

Summary: "I am right here," she says loudly, and she can almost hear the crack when Louis' head whips around to stare at her."Why?" Louis asks, and Harry feels her insides shrivel up and die. Harry didn’t plan to join the football team. She didn’t plan to sleep with the captain of the football team. She definitely didn’t plan to sleep with the closeted captain of the football team, who promptly acted as if nothing happened and left Harry a pathetic, pining mess.

Star’s note: this is absolutely amazing and i loved it a lot.

Summary: "my heart is pounding," louis says. "feels like it might jump out of my chest." harry moves a bit closer to her, and reaches her hand across, using her other one to help her stay upright in the water. her hand is soft and warm on louis' chest, and she feels her heartbeat speed up with her touch. harry's cheeks darken, and she smiles shyly at louis. "feels like a stampede," she whispers, and louis' loud laugh in response feels wrong somehow. harry gently uses her other hand to guide louis' hand to her own chest, and they're both just treading water now. harry's chest is warm, and her heart is racing almost as fast as louis. "this is how i feel, around you," harry says quietly, and louis drops her hand from harry's chest like she's been burnt.

Star’s note: this fic left me feeling so smushy inside. i loved it.

Summary: There’s a war going on right outside Hogwarts walls, there are people that want to kill her friends for what runs through their veins, but right now, all Harry can think about is the warmth of Louis’ fingers tangled with hers, and nothing else really matters much. or, a Girl Direction Hogwarts AU, set during the first War in the Wizarding World.

Star’s note: oh. this entire fic is just full of feeling and beauty.
