hello! I hope this isn't an annoying question, but do you have any recommendations for someone with dry-ish skin (but is otherwise completely maintenance free) who wants to start washing her face lol? I literally don't have a routine and very rarely wear makeup and usually it's completely fine, I just know that I should be washing it because I'm an adult haha but don't want to mess up my skin. sorry if you have answered something like this before!
hi there! no worries, this blog’s unofficial motto is “there are no stupid questions”!
so basically... washing your skin is important when you wear a lot of products and makeup, or if you are exposed to a lot of pollution and dirty environments, or if your skin tends to go a little crazy with the sweat & sebum buildup — though it easily becomes a slippery slope towards over-cleansing and irritation and more sebum production to compensate! if you have dry skin and don’t fall into any other of the categories above, you’re fine just washing your face at night and/or after strenuous, sweaty activities. there are no “shoulds” or one-size-fits-all rules in skincare*.
regardless of skin type, everyone should look for a cleanser that is:
gentle — sulphates are not evil, but if you find a cleanser based on betaines or at least a system of multiple sulphates rather than one (seems odd, but that means their action is gentler, and the overall concentration of detergents in the product does not change), that’s better. also avoid daily cleansers that contain physically exfoliating scrubby particles, that’s way too harsh for everyday use.
low pH — cleansing with neutral or high pH soap bars or foaming cleansers can seriously throw your skin barrier and microbiome (the good bacteria that keep the bad bacteria from taking over) off balance. you should aim for a pH that is skin-neutral, which is to say slightly acidic, at around 4.5 - 5.5; many products nowadays indicate whether they’re low pH, but it’s always fun to get a box of pH strips and check whether yours fits the bill!
not overpriced — sometimes brands promise the world based on technically-great actives (or gimmicky ones), but even the best ingredients can only do so much when they’re in contact with your skin for less than a minute before they get washed down the drain. save your money when it comes to cleansers, and invest in leave-in products with more actives instead. cleansers featuring acids like AHAs and BHAs get a pass here because those help achieve the aforementioned low pH and therefore offer more immediate benefits.
and that’s it! a low-cost, low pH, gentle cleanser used once a day in the evenings is all you need. no need to cleanse morning and night, start oil cleansing or double cleansing or anything, if your skin does not need it. my usual recs are the LRP tolériane or cerave hydrating facial cleanser.
*[whispering] since you mentioned you don’t have a routine, i gotta say it... consider starting to wear sunscreen too :’) that’s the only “should” that everyone should heed! stay safe!

Controversial Opinion: Iris Wildethyme should show up in the new Doctor Who series with one of the previous Doctor's companions.
Whether or not the two of them spend the entire episode antagonizing the Doctor is up for question.
Played by Katy Manning I hope!
send me controversial or unpopular opinions and I’ll tell you if I agree

Quilt FAQ!
There’s at least 500 of y’all following me that aren’t bots, so here’s an FAQ about my Beekeeper’s Quilt aka the rainbow mess from the Tumblr Radar (TM).
Tumblr media
1. How do you make the hexipuffs?
I’m using a knitting pattern called “The Beekeeper Quilt” by Tiny Owl Knits. The pattern is in no way my own invention or intellectual property, which is why I will not be posting the pattern or a video of me making the puffs. If you are interested in picking up this project, I highly recommend you purchase the pattern for the low price of $5.50 here.
I’m using the recommended needle size of US 4 and recommended yarn weight of fingering/sock yarn. I don’t know what my gauge is because honestly it doesn’t matter. I did switch to magic loop rather than three DPNs because frankly I hated the DPN method. You can only get stabbed in the palm so many times.
2. Where do you get your yarn?
A lot of the yarn in the quilt is leftover from my own projects from approximately five years of knitting, or given to me by my great aunt who also knits. I purchased quite a bit from wildethyme on Etsy, but sadly the listings are no longer available. I also like Folkestone Harbour Yarn’s naturally dyed minis. But, my all time favorite indie dyer is Skein Yarn in Australia. If you have the cash for it and don’t mind waiting on international shipping, everything they make is more than worth it.
Tumblr media
To the left are three wildethyme minis and a wildethyme puff, to the right are Folkestone Harbour.
3. Do you crochet? / Can the hexipuffs be crocheted?
I do not crochet myself, and I don’t know if someone has made a similar pattern for crochet hexipuffs. The projects tab for the quilt on Ravelry would be a good place to check if that is something you’re interested in.
4. How do you stuff the hexipuffs?
I’m using boring old polyfil stuffing, available at any craft or big box store (aka Walmart). I kitchener stitch the puffs closed after they’re stuffed, which I think is a diversion from the official pattern, but I like the way it looks.
Tumblr media
This is more or less how much stuffing goes into a puff. I adjust based on the yarn to make sure it doesn’t look too stretched out while still being plump.
5. How big will the quilt be?
I’m not entirely sure, but I am aiming for 600 puffs, which should cover the top of my full-size mattress. Each puff ends up a little unique based on the different yarns, but they’ll sew together fine. Once I have 600 I plan to lay them all out on my bed and see if I need more.
6. How are you going to sew the puffs together?
Haven’t decided yet! Tune back in summer 2021 to find out!
I think that’s most of it. My ask box is always open if you have a question I didn’t catch here. Happy knitting!

Hey! Obsessed with your beekeeper quilt layout (congrats on hitting 100!) I'm curious -- do you have any idea what brand of yarn any of your orange hexipuffs are? i love the color of them, and i've been looking for some good orange shades to add to my own hexipuffs. It's no big deal if you can't remember though
Hey thank you so much! I’d love to see photos of your puffs so far!
Short answer, no not really. At least half, probably closer to 75% of the puffs in that photo are from wildethyme on Etsy. They have a really incredible beekeeper’s quilt starter kit that I bought oh probably four years ago. The listing is still up if you’re interested. I asked for almost all solids and semi-solids and I believe that they custom dye most of their yarn. I think almost every orange I have is from that kit because it’s not a color I normally buy for other projects.
However, this guy is O-Wool fingering. I bought the same yarn in several colors and I highly recommend it if it fits your budget. I also have a really beautiful sunny yellow from them that’s just gorgeous.

My latest finished skein of handspun! Weighing in at 95 grams and an estimated 400 yards, it's a bit more than I intended, but that's okay! It's a springtime gradient from green to yellow to white to purple to blue made with merino from @wildethyme plus some assorted bits and bobs because I can't resist adding them in! The finished yarn just has more personality (depth, color complexity, a wee bit of texture). #connieleespins https://www.instagram.com/p/B_vVbDOJj0x/?igshid=1jd4ur58dn5tm

Hi there! I too love your hexipuffs (I'm sure you're getting that a lot today :D) I was wondering if you could talk a little about how you buy/collect yarn? You have such a wonderful range of colors and patterns in the quilt, but my scraps are never that varied or aren't the right weight for uniformity (or there's simply not enough left for even a single puff). Do you just splurge on a whole bunch of yarn for a project like that? Thanks! <3
Hey thank you so much! I love this question!
The short answer is I’ve been knitting with pretty much solely sock weight yarn for going on four years, and I have enough disposable income (and a generous aunt) to allow me to buy a lot of different yarn specifically for this quilt.
To get started on this project I actually bought the Beekeeper Quilt starter pack from Wilde thyme on Etsy (which is still available right now!) and asked them for only solid and semi-solid colors. I knew before I started that I wanted a clear rainbow quilt, and heavily variegated yarns wouldn’t work well. I highly recommend their kit for any scrap project. They are so lovely and hand-dye most of what they send you. Plus it’s probably the best deal on Etsy for the amount of yarn you’re getting.
So about half my quilt right now is wildethyme yarns; the rest is either my own project leftovers or leftovers my great aunt sends me from her projects. If you’re looking to get more small amounts in a lot of different colors, search for mini skeins on Etsy, or see if your preferred brands sell mini skeins.
Hope this helps and good luck collecting!
