Book 1: For the Wolf                  Book 2: For the Throne
Series: Wilderwood
Author: Hannah Whitten
Genre: fantasy, romance
Synopsis [fantasticfiction]:  The first daughter is for the Throne. The second daughter is for the Wolf. As the only Second Daughter born in centuries, Red has one purpose—to be sacrificed to the Wolf in the Wood in the hope he'll return the world's captured gods. Red is almost relieved to go. Plagued by a dangerous power she can't control, at least she knows that in the Wilderwood, she can't hurt those she loves. Again. But the legends lie. The Wolf is a man, not a monster. Her magic is a calling, not a curse. And if she doesn't learn how to use it, the monsters the gods have become will swallow the Wilderwood—and her world whole.
Chibi: This is a must read! I can’t even pick which one I love more. Each sister is amazing on their own and their partners are to die for.

PRELIMINARY ROUNDS! MATCH 8 OUT OF 10

Propaganda Under the Cut:
Priya:
Ok I haven’t read these books in a while but basically she’s a minor character in this series and from what I remember she does kill several wolves also something about the main character and looking back on how much she’s grown. Anyway I loved this book series so much when I was in middle school <3
Red:
Idk I just find them really compelling for a Red Riding Hood inspired character
Red Riding Hood:
She tamed the Jabberwocky and calls it "Kitty". She calls the Big Bad Wolf her "puppy". She's kind of really creepy.

"For the Wolf" by Hannah F. Whitten
"For the Wolf" - if you didn't know - is a dark fantasy romance novel that is the first of two books in the "Wilderwood" duology.
This book follows Redarys - aka Red - as she is sent into the Wilderwood to be ravaged by the Wolf in an effort to keep her kingdom - and her world - from the wrath of the wolf. Once Red enters the Wilderwood, however, things are not as they have always been perceived. The wolf is not a monster, in fact, he's a man. An ornery man that, at first, wants nothing to do with her and would actually rather her leave the forest altogether.
Despite his disinterest in her presence, "The Wolf" - aka Eammon - begins his coexistence with Red at the Keep and mysteries begin to unfold. Red finds herself a part of a much larger world with a much more complex problem than she ever realized. All the while, her sister and friends back home are fighting for ways to save her from the Wilderwood and the Wolf and bring her back home.
"For the Wolf" is an incredibly complex story - one that is a little bit hard to follow, if I'm honest. The magic of the Wilderwood and how it worked didn't really make that much sense to me as I was reading it. I found myself having to go back in the story, trying to piece things together to get a better understanding. And even that didn't fully help me.
I can reconcile not fully understanding the mystery of something when the novel is part of a series, so I'm holding out total judgement for after I've read the second - and final - book, "For the Throne." I'm hoping it will answer some lingering questions, and really get into the mystery of the Shadowlands.
This book has been compared to "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Beauty and the Beast," but I can't seem to find correlations to those fairy tales anywhere. Besides the obvious of course, which is that there is a "wolf" who is actually a man, and a lady whose name is Red.
I liked this book mostly for the romantical element. I understood Eammon's fear at letting Red into his world and not wanting her to be involved. He was wracked with the centuries of guilt from his past failures with the other "Second Daughters," and he wanted to keep her clear of any harm. Though, it was a relief when Red finally started to understand her power and Eammon let her work with him to try and save the Wilderwood. Their connection flowed brilliantly, and I loved reading how Eammon slowly softened around Red.
I also really enjoyed watching Red's growth throughout the book. She had lived twenty years with a single purpose - to die for the wolf. When she found out that her life could be something more, she wanted to do everything she could to make it as meaningful as possible, and help solve an essentially unsolvable problem.
Overall, this story was good - not great. Despite the twists and turns of events, some things were still pretty predictable. Though, the ending was surprising and I'm excited to see where the story goes next.

For The Wolf - Hannah Whitten
Okay, so... First book to review is this one:
Tumblr media
This book is most def not what I expected. Look at the cover. Just look at it. Can you guess what this is a retelling of?
If you said “Little Red Riding Hood”, you’re wrong. Mostly. It’s Little Red Riding Hood in that the main character is named Red, she wears a red hood, and she goes into the forest to find “The Wolf”. That’s all covered in the first 20 pages. After that, it’s something else entirely.
Is it closer to Beauty and the Beast? Perhaps. But the magic in this version doesn’t lean toward talking candelabras and wardrobes that bodyslam villagers. The magic is more of a growing magic, a connection magic. Maybe “the true magic is the friends we made along the way” magic.
I want to avoid spoilers, because (unlike a lot of the books I read) I actually want you to read this one. So just some things I enjoyed or didn’t:
- The story goes back and forth between what is happening in the forest and what is continuing OUTSIDE the forest. If you’re a fan of political machinations, these bits will intrigue you greatly. They bored me. It is what it is.
- There is romance. It’s a YA book, what did you expect? One thing this book does well is that when the actual romance happens, it has been EARNED. A lot of these books go from “we hate each other” to “we’re making out and planning a future” in a couple of pages. Not this one. This isn’t an enemies to lovers slow burn, because there are no enemies, but it is a slow burn nonetheless.
- Anything that’s good doesn’t last for long in this story. It’s kind of heartbreaking. The happy ending is not what you thought it was, and every happy ending before that is broken by the time the story ends. That bit is unfortunately realistic.
- This is more about the physical book than the story inside, but the book has those “rough cut” pages. The ones where the ends don’t all line up so that it looks like an old book. Personal irritation for me, but some people love them. I find that it makes it hard to turn the page.
- You gotta PAY ATTENTION to this book. What you think will just be a one-sentence throwaway line or a little bit of background history/worldbuilding will become important later. Over and over again. Words are NOT wasted in this book.
I enjoyed it. I recommend it. Will you enjoy it? Who knows? But I sure as hell did, and I think it’s worth your time to check it out.
For The Wolf, Hannah Whitten, $17.99 (on sale for $15.99 at Barnes & Noble), First in the Wilderwood Series, 430 pages

I want to be For The Wolf.
|Triggers|
As the second daughter 20-year-old Red has only one purpose. And it is to be sacrificed to the wolf in return for the captured kings. Red is relieved to go- as she has been plagued by her powers and the farther she goes- the fewer people she can hurt. As she journeys into the Wilderwood and meets the wolf- she discovers that everything she knows is a lie. The wolf is no monster. And her magic will not damn but protect everything and everyone she loves.
The Writing was beautiful. I loved the writing style and although the book was divided into Red’s and Neve chapters the immaculate writing style always held my attention. It was also incredibly detailed and dark which I always love. /srs
The Plot was borderline mysterious and creepy. Not only was it spot on but there were so many plot twists that my head was left spinning by the end of this book. I’m a fan of little red riding hood so this was so refreshing. It was also incredibly original and entertaining. /lh
The characters were fairly enjoyable. I found myself taking a liking and yearning for Red’s chapters more. And although both sisters were the main characters. I felt like the book leaned more to Red’s story than Neve's. /gen
❞𝑷𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒑𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒍𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒕, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒐𝒐 𝒎𝒖𝒄𝒉 𝒑𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒐𝒐 𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒂 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒂 𝒗𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝒂𝒏𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒆.❞
Red is a very relatable character. And although I didn’t agree with some of her decisions- I still really enjoyed following her. Her character growth was amazing! Not only did she start really living her life by the end of this book. But she also gained a sense of purpose and I could definitely see the difference between the beginning and now. We don’t really get to see much of Neve so I don’t know much about her characteristics but she seems like an amazing sister that would do anything for her sister. And that’s the kind of sister we love. /lh
❞𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒐𝒐𝒕𝒔…𝑰 𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒕 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒔, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎 𝒂𝒏𝒚𝒘𝒂𝒚, 𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝑰 𝒂𝒎 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒐𝒍𝒇, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒐𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒘𝒐𝒐𝒅.❞
Overall I absolutely can’t wait for the next book in this series and I’m hoping for more information and clearance with Neve because this book did not do her justice. I really appreciate this book and loved its entire setting and texture. As always I apologize if my review was offensive or disrespectful to you. And if so please let me know how I can fix that. Thank you for taking the time to read this review. /pc /lh
A special thanks to Orbit Books and Netgalley for this eArc!
