De Wijdesteeg Street, Amsterdam

Spelende kinderen in de Wijdesteeg tussen de Aelbrechtskolk en Schans, 1908-1912.

De oude naam van de Wijdesteeg is Wijdepoort, onder welke benaming de steeg reeds omstreeks 1600 voorkomt. De naam zal in vroeger tijd wel op een ruime doorgang hebben geduid. Tegenwoordig zou 'wijd' zeker niet gebruikt zijn. De Wijdesteeg is het enige overblijfsel van een groot aantal met poorten afgesloten steegjes dat vroeger in Delfshaven bestond.

Op bevel van het Hof van Holland moest Delfshaven in 1573 'sterk worden gemaakt'. Er werden schansen en wallen opgeworpen ter bescherming tegen de vijand. Vandaar de benaming Schans.

De Aelbrechtskolk is vernoemd naar graaf Aelbrecht van Beieren (1336-1404), graaf van Henegouwen, Holland en Zeeland, aan wie Delfshaven zijn ontstaan te danken heeft.

De stad Delft ontving van hem op 8 september 1389 een privilege tot het graven van een kanaal tussen Overschie en de rivier de Nieuwe Maas: de Delfshavense Schie. Voor de vereniging van Delfshaven met Rotterdam in 1886 heetten de Aelbrechtskade en Aelbrechtskolk resp. Oostschiekade en Kolk. De sluis en brug werden bij besluit B&W 23 maart 1886 resp. Aelbrechtsluis en Aelbrechtsbrug genoemd.
