Memorial to Captain Charles Collinson, 18th Royal Irish, who died 21 July 1842 in China. His two brothers also died in service. Their memorial is in the Parish Church, Sproughton, Suffolk.
The Royal Irish were in Brigadier Bastley's brigade which was ordered to attack the West wall of the city. The regimental history records that the 18th were the last to go ashore at 7am by which time it was already so hot that the regiment were ordered to leave their greatcoats on the ship and to remove the leather stocks from around their necks. It was the first time that they had fought without greatcoats in China and this was their third summer in the country. The regiment was called to the Western Gate where they were met by General Gough. The 18th were ordered to take position and fire on the Chinese gunners to cover a party of Engineers who were to blow the gate. They did this from the cover of some nearby houses and the engineers were able to place the explosive charge to blow the gate.
The 18th then stormed through the gateway in a thick cloud of smoke, stumbling over the sandbags which the Chinese defenders had placed behind the gate to reinforce it. They then found themselves confronted by an inner gate which they started to batter in an attempt to break through. Just then an English voice from the other side of the gate said ""Hold on, we'll open it for you!"" Men of the 55th Foot had stormed another wall and fought their way around to the Western Gate. The 18th then moved along a narrow rampart three abreast. Some Tartars were spotted coming out of a building ahead but the CO insisted that they were coolies and of no consequence. However, these Tartars set themselves up behind a low wall and fired on the troops, killing Captain Charles Collinson of the Light Company, and others. The Light Company dashed down a ramp and routed the enemy snipers, but one large Tartar with a sword in each hand stood his ground. His bravery impressed the officers who signalled him to run away but instead he hurled himself at them and was shot dead.
The Grenadier Company, led by Captain Wigston, were threatened by some Tartars who lined up a short distance away. Lt Venour and 12 men were sent off to deal with them but they put up a stubborn resistance. Another section, of 14 men led by Lt Hewitt were ordered to help, and a hand-to-hand fight ensued, in which Pte McCarthy lost a thumb whilst fending off an attack on Hewitt. There were some houses occupied by the enemy so some men were left to watch and wait for them to come out. One man did rush out and stabbed a soldier so it was decided to burn the houses.
The population of Chinkiang Fu had been led to believe that the British were barbarians who would torture them so panic set in and many committed suicide. The Tartar General killed himself in a burning house rather than be captured. At the end of the battle the army had lost 2 officers and 30 killed, 11 officers and 98 other ranks wounded, and 3 missing. The Royal Irish lost one officer and 2 men killed, one officer, 2 sergeants and 15 men wounded.
The map is from Wikipedia.

RAF women cannot fly the F-35 stealth jet because 'the helmets are too heavy'
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 07/02/2023 - 12:00 in Military
None of the about 30 female pilots of the Royal British Air Force (RAF) is flying in the F-35 stealth fighter. The reason is the current helmet used in the 5th generation fighter.
Speaking to the Defense Committee, the head of the Air Force, Sir Mike Wigston, said that women are very delicate for the F-35 heavy helmet. Because to transport the Gen III model used by the RAF, British pilots have to weigh at least 68 kilos. Lighter pilots are at risk of neck injuries if they have to eject from the F-35 in an emergency.
The pilots of the new RAF F-35 stealth fighter aircraft, which entered service in June 2018 with the illustrious Squadron 617 "Dambusters", are equipped with an exclusive electronic helmet.
Tumblr media
The helmet full of electronics offers pilots not only protection, but also an information package, including cameras with thermal sensors or night vision that follows their gaze, allowing them to "look through" the plane for an almost complete situational awareness.
In fact, the helmet that accompanies the F-35 Lightning II is significantly heavier than that of other fighters, weighing 2.5 kg. Because it is basically equipped with displays that the pilot needs with the information for his missions - including speed, direction, altitude, target information and warnings. Instead of a heads-up display, the F-35 information is projected directly into the pilot's display, reducing the pilot's workload and increasing responsiveness. A camera system mounted on the aircraft also allows the pilot to use the helmet viewfinder to see things under the jet wings.
Tumblr media
Parliamentarian Tobias Ellwood, chairman of the House of Commons defense committee, said: "There needs to be a second lighter helmet for women to wear."
There is also a "light" version of the F-35 helmet. With only 2.09 kilos, it is similar in weight to F-15 and F-16 helmets. Lighter pilots could also fly with him. However, the head of the Air Force does not believe in the purchase of the $400,000 equipment. "We would have problems approving it in terms of safety because it does not offer the pilot the protection that the other helmet has now," he said.
Tumblr media
Wigston sees no discrimination against female pilots: "This is the minimum weight limit for the F-35, and it doesn't matter if you are a man, a woman or anyone else, that's what applies."
The air marshal also said that, on a case-by-case basis, if the fitness of a female or very light pilot meant that they were more suitable for flying on the Lightning than on the Typhoon, the RAF could consider issuing them a "lighter safe helmet".
Tumblr media
Is the helmet issue really the reason why no woman sits in the cockpit of a British F-35? The average weight of British women is 72 kilos, so the 68 kilo limit should not be a problem anyway.
unlike RAF, at USAF the gender issue in the F-35 cockpit is no longer a problem, with the first woman driving the Lightning II for the first time in 2015. According to USAF F-35 pilot Christine Mau: "The plane does not know what the gender of his pilot is. And he doesn't care either."

Kinstellar And Strategy Council Present The Second UK – Ukraine Defence Tech Forum In London
Tumblr media
With the support of the Embassy of Ukraine in the UK, Kinstellar was proud to partner with Stephen Butler and his team at Strategy Council to host the UK-Ukraine Defence Tech Forum, themed “Financing Ukraine’s Victory: Access to Capital and Scaling Defence Technologies” at the prestigious Royal United Services Institute in London on 8 November.
Purpose
Following on from the success of the previous drone-themed defence forum held in May, the UK-Ukraine Defence Tech Forum reconvened to promote investment by venture capital firms in Ukrainian miltech innovators. Ukrainian tech firms, UK and international VCs, and the governments of the UK and Ukraine exchanged views and experiences on the evolving role of technology in modern warfare, challenges to investment, and the critical role of venture capital in helping scale up defence innovation and rapid product deployment to defeat the enemy and save the lives of Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines. The highlight of the event was watching Ukrainian miltech firms professionally pitching VCs on their technologies, resulting in fruitful discussions regarding possible investments during the networking sessions.
Attendees
We were honoured to have Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael Wigston (ret.), Board member of MyDefence, as a speaker on the opening panel moderated by JP Rathbone, Security & Defence Editor at the Financial Financial Times.
Leading venture capital firms and Defence Tech investors – including the UK National Security Strategic Investment Fund, NATO Innovation Fund, IQT International, Twin Track Ventures, Presto Tech Horizons, Offset Ventures, IQ Capital, Sig ma Software Labs, SevenCamp, Green Flag Ventures, and D3 VC Fund – participated in panels focused on how venture capital drives technological advancements, the potential for defence companies to meet ESG criteria, and the role of defence tech clusters in educating investors and channeling sustainable investment into emerging technologies.
The forum featured pioneering Ukrainian Defence Tech companies such as Destinus, Skyeton, Roboneers, Swarmer, HIMERA, DroneSpace, Sokoly.ai, Farsight Vision, Bavovna.ai, Skyrora Ventures, and Osavul, as well as the UK and international Defence Tech firms Evolve Dynamics, Fujitsu, MyDefence, and FAC Technology. Discussions explored investment into advanced tech solutions such as AI-driven guidance systems, real-time sensor data integration, smart munitions, autonomous targeting systems, network-centric warfare tools, counter-drone technologies, and secure tactical communications.
Kinstellar is Ukraine’s and the region’s leading defence sector law firm. We are an integral part of the Ukrainian military technology ecosystem, helping our global and SME clients to navigate the shoals of Ukraine’s regulatory and government decision-making process. Our recent mandates include advising Rheinmetall, KNDS, and BAE Systems in their market entries. We also advise multiple drone manufacturers and other defence companies, addressing their legal needs and contributing to the strengthening of Ukraine’s defence capabilities.
