Have you ever...

had a guy instantly crush on you after he comes to <insert place: a party, church, the game...> with ANOTHER GIRL, and then he seems nice the first or second time you talk to him for 5 minutes total, and then he asks you where the relationship is heading...

and you're creeped out, and you're thinking "OH MY GOODNESS!!  He's just wife-shopping - like he doesn't know anything about me except that we both know a bit about music and like the same sci-fi tv shows, and he already thinks we're meant to fall in love and get married and all that..."

so you back off a bit and ask your closest friends (girls AND GUYS) for their honest opinion of him, and they all agree he's too eager and uncomforting, and you try to tell the guy that you're not interested in a relationship with him,

and he KEEPS ON sending facebook messages and asking weird questions and making awkward comments and jabs at you anytime he sees you with other people (because you've rejected all his invitations to hang out outside of planned group activities), and you're about 90% certain he hasn't gotten the message that you don't like him and don't want his attention,

and now you have to be mean, which you don't like, but you're pretty sure it's the only way to be blunt enough to get the point across, because clearly his social skills are lacking to the point that he doesn't get all the not-so-subtle hints you've been throwing at him.

I've had guys that wanted to date me because they were ready to settle down and were more serious about a relationship, but none of them ever creeped me out and felt stalker-ish...  I'm a little beyond myself right now, with all of this...  I mean, yes, I want a guy who is intentional in his dating, but with this guy, well, I'd be the guy in this relationship, and he'd be the one romanticizing everything.  I'd like to be the girl in the relationship, if that's not too much to ask.  I'd like a guy who is more interested in becoming best friends with me than meeting his wedding deadline or finding the idyllic mother of his children.

As a note to any other single girls (especially older girls, 22+, who've never had a meaningful relationship), it hurts to feel like it's a struggle to find someone who would actually want to be with you just because you're you.  The temptation is to wonder what's wrong with us, but thankfully my God encourages me by loving me enough to sacrifice His Son for my soul.  And my friends remind me that I am lovely and wonderfully made, even when I feel like I'm being shopped for (like this guy).  So if anyone else has ever been in a similar situation to mine, I hope you'll be encouraged to hold fast and wait for someone who truly sees you and values you like a treasure to be unwrapped and explored gently.  After all, fools rush in.

Feel free to leave me a comment or send a message if you've experienced this or something similar.  If I can be of encouragement to anyone else the way my friends have encouraged me, it would thrill me to know that this whole experience resulted in something stronger and better than merely my own growth.
