Widows (2018) When the untimely death of a group of robbers leaves their widows with 2 million to make up, they take it upon themselves to carry out a plan to get the money and then some. I remember when this was advertised in cinema and I couldn’t wait to see this, fast forward I didn’t see it, but I have now and whilst I enjoyed the movie it didn’t blow me away! The latest Steve McQueen story is a solid one, and the idea of the widows carrying out their own heist is a fun and inventive narrative that on the surface sounds great. The problem I had is what surrounded it, it didn’t really need to be over 2 hours long and could well have been 90 minutes, cutting out what I felt were unneeded political scenes that really didn’t add much at all, and concentrate that on the heist. The other problem I had was that big moments felt rather underwhelming, the movie has some beautiful storytelling at times, but when it comes to the climax it just didn’t do it for me. There are a couple of scenes that should have been bigger and bolder, beefing these out, making them explosive, deeper and more in depth, and staying away from other slightly confusing endeavours would have been great! Aside from that the film has a good cast, with Viola Davis playing Veronica very well. There’s a couple of small roles for Liam Neeson and Colin Farrell to beef things out a bit and as I said before the story is unique, interesting and engages you into how things are going to unfold, even if it does go the long way about it!
