Fingers curl inwards, tangling themselves with woolen blankets. There is stillness, and there is quiet, and there is comfort.

And then there is the pouring in of sunshine (dreaded sunshine) which announces itself to the world as the sun marches into the sky. The Moonstone shirks away, before conscious thought settles in and recognizes what sunshine could only mean.

Daytime. Full morning. (Somehow, he had overslept.)

And it is in rising that he begins to gather the faintest clue as to how, for when his head lifts off the pillow, the indent left is small, and he feels even smaller. Two feet touch the ground and they are delicate, not war-forged. He looks down at his hands and they are innocent, clean.

Who am I?

It is disorienting, to a capacity, to hang so close to the ground after so many years of reaching higher, but he adapts, somewhat awkwardly, to the method of motion necessary to move himself. It was not leg strength that propelled him forward—not at a speed he liked, at minimum—but dexterity. Carefully executed strides glide him to the mirror, and red eyes—not cerulean or gold, but red—stare back.

He knows this face. (She blinks back at him.) He is Maria.

Her expression tightens, displaying his distress. Of all individuals to inhabit, the princess of Macedon certainly wasn’t the worst pick, but if he was here, where was the rest of him? In his quarters asleep, or somewhere else in motion, puppeted by one unfamiliar with his functions? And further (her eyes glide across the room, noting the various items laid about), he was not expected to practice faith, was he?

He exhales, knowing well that questions do not guarantee answers—if he wanted to find out what happened, he would have to dig it up himself. Another step.

She would not be very good at digging things, would she?

He dresses, navigating her body so as to grow more familiar—more at ease—in her skin. It is not easy, but he doesn’t expect that. He doesn’t need it to be so either. As soon as he is able, he opens the door to her dorm and navigates to his own quarters.

It is on light footsteps that he carries himself there, and it is even lighter that he knocks—not because her fragility was affecting him, but because he wasn’t certain of her constitution. Once, twice, and then patiently he waits.

“Hello?” (It is strange, employing a voice that is not his own.)

He thinks back to their few encounters, trying to emulate Maria’s manner of speech in case it was not her that stood beyond. Satisfied in thought and fabricated scenario alike, he continues. “I have a message for Sir Valter.”

Kind, polite, and further, it did not betray that anything was wrong at all.

One day, you find yourself waking up thoroughly sore, scraping yourself off the floor of a Monastery classroom. As you strain to remember how you wound up there, you catch sight of your hand – except it’s not yours. Nor are the clothes you now wear, or the body beneath them. Your actual self is standing opposite you, staring back in shock and… covered in dust? Before things spiral further, the professor attempts to quell the growing chorus of unrest with an explanation, which also serves to jog your memory. This was supposed to be a seminar showcasing the magical properties of a magic tool from Tellius known as Warp Powder. Unfortunately, its volatile nature lends itself to many potential side-effects if mishandled… one of which is ripping people’s souls out and depositing them into the nearest acceptable vessel. The unbothered professor assures everyone that this “minor inconvenience” will wear off on its own eventually, and that the Monastery will still be expecting the completion of your usual assignments and duties in the meantime.
