Sliding her glass across the island of Faith's kitchen, Buffy motioned for the other Slayer to refill her glass -- a slice of lime ready and waiting. "You would think I kicked her puppy. Not that we have a puppy. But still. The way Sara acts you would think I was a serial puppy kicker. Ruined her life. She actually said those words to me. Told me that her father and I ruined her life by moving her here..."

Glass refilled, Buffy downed the liquid in one before biting the lime and tossing it into the trash. "James seems perfectly happy. Even has himself a girlfriend. Or something. He doesn't tell me. And why should he? I'm all old now. I'm an old life ruiner."

Buffy lifted up her head and and looked at her from across the kitchen table. There was a bottle of whiskey and some cans of White Claw between them. It was the complete lack of kick from said White Claws that had driven her to taking shots with Faith. It was the only way to take the unpleasant sensation of her throat constricting as the liquor scorched down her esophagus. Every shot had been finished with an expressive 'yuck' reaction.

"Omigod, Faaith." Either inebriation or the harshness of the alcohol had brought out the nasally vocal fry of her accent. "Yer drunk. Or...or yer not an' juss fuckin' with me. Well, I don' think i's very fu — funny."

❝ Are you planning to have some burger with that sauce, or...?” Her voice trailed; eyes unable to look away from the mess that was Faith’s sloppy excuse for dinner between her even sloppier painted nails. Buffy made a mental note to offer to paint them properly later – maybe she could even con her into a color that wasn’t black or mauve, not that black technically ever fell out of fashion.

There was a half-poked at eggplant sandwich sitting below her, staring up at her really, willing her to find an appetite but she was too preoccupied with Faith unhinging her jaw. Barbeque fell slow motion-style, and the blond’s gaze followed every single drop to the plastic dish before settling back to ruby colored lips. Wow, not even a smudge. Second mental note – ask Faith what brand she used for lipstick.

��More fries?” She figured she didn’t actually have to ask the question, Faith seemed to always have room in her stomach for food that came from mom&pop run diners at 2am. Two fingers already began to push her leftovers in the second slayer’s direction, the motion intentionally slow and steady as to not trigger the fresh wound that was settling in from the hour prior. It was a rookie mistake – she was, once again, engrossed with staring at Faith, but this time it led her shoulder-first into a headstone. Or…well...now it was headstones. Sorry, Gertrude Hurley – rest in peace circa 1947. She was infuriating, honestly. She slayed the same way she ate – haphazardly and without a single thought in that perfectly styled brunette head of hers. How could Buffy not stare? She was keeping a watchful eye, earning her title as Giles’ favorite, making sure the job got done, no other reason –

Two more inches across the table and it was too inches too many. Her shoulder popped and the muscles stiffened, forcing her to recoil back with grit teeth as she fought the urge to wince. Being showed up by a freshly risen baby-vamp was humiliation enough, she didn’t need to send the little old grandma across the counter into a panic that ended in someone calling 9-1-1.

“Remind me to ask you to pop my shoulder back into place on the way home.” A pause.

“Gently.”

†  ――――         THERE  WAS  SOMETHING  ABOUT  FAITH'S  PRESENCE  THAT  MADE  BUFFY  FEEL  LIKE  SHE  COULD  BE  HERSELF.  conversation  was  easy  with  her  no  matter  the  topic,  it  seemed  like,  and  the  friendship  brewing  between  them  was  easy  compared  to  the  other  students  that  she's  met  so  far.  she  was  feeling  like  a  outcast,  but  faith  didn't  make  her  feel  that  way.  she  appreciated  that  more  than  faith  could  know.  it  has  been  the  one  thing  buffy  was  desperately  needing   —   a  new  friend  she  could  call  her  own.  willow  was  off  with  oz  and  her  new  wicca  group  and  xander  had  his  new  job,  she  felt  alone.  maybe  that'll  change  now  that  she  had  faith.

BUFFY  LAUGHED  SOFTLY  AT  FAITH'S  WORDS,  SHRUGGING  A  BIT,        ❛     i  think  that  might  make  us  at  maximum  capacity  if  we  pulled  that  off      ❜     she  joked,  smile  unwavering.  she  blushed  slightly  at  the  nickname  that  was  bestowed  upon  her.      ❛     poetry  girl,  huh     ?     i  like  it     ❜     she  chuckled  lightly.        ❛     i  definitely  will.  maybe  we  can  go  to  one  together.  i'm  not  writing  my  own  stuff  yet  but  maybe  it's  just  the  inspiration  i've  been  needing      ❜     she  replied,  nodding  confidently.  she  wasn't  sure  if  she'd  actually  pursue  the  art  of  poetry,  but  it  was  something  that  interested  her.  she  did  need  a  hobby  that  wasn't  slaying  and  indexing  weapons.

BUFFY  WAS  SURPRISED  BY  FAITH'S  SUGGESTION,  DEFINITELY  DIDN'T  SEE  IT  COMING  BUT  SHE  WASN'T  EXACTLY  OPPOSED  TO  THE  IDEA.  she  didn't  really  fit  in  here  anyway.  she  didn't  have  any  friends  here,  and  it  wasn't  much  of  her  vibe  with  the  whole  fraternity  and  the  beer.  she  much  rather  be  somewhere  else  anyway.  she  thought  for  a  moment,  looking  back  into  the  party  and  then  back  at  the  other  female,  taking  in  a  deep  breath.        ❛      you  know  what     ?      let's  do  it.  this  place  has  been  kind  of  a  drag,  anyway      ❜     she  agreed.  she  headed  down  the  steps  and  began  walking  side  by  side  with  faith,  her  arms  folded  over  her  chest  as  she  walked,  kicking  the  pebbles  in  her  path.         ❛      not  much  for  the  frat  party,  huh     ?     i'm  not  either.  kinda  lame  if  you  ask  me      ❜    she  stated,  glancing  over  at  faith.

It sounded like this girl either knew about the Hellmouth and wanted to keep it secret, or genuinely just thought the town was weird. But given the stake in her purse, Faith was beginning to suspect Buffy had firsthand experience. But it wasn't just something she could come out and ask, like, "Hey, I'm a Slayer. Know any good places where vampires hang out?"

"Makes sense. Family's important," she said, shrugging one shoulder. "Apart from my aunt, I don't really have anyone back home, but sometimes I miss how Boston was, y'know, an actual city. Would it kill ya to get a Dunkin Donuts out here?"

Faith's tone was light, playful. She wondered what Buffy meant about not leaving her mother -- was it health reasons? Not wanting to leave her alone with the monsters? Again, not something you just asked normal.

"Poetry girl, huh? Not usually my favorite thing, if I'm bein' honest. Unless it's Doctor Seuss. But if you ever have an open mic night at the coffee shop, hit me up," she said, tilting her chin upwards a bit. When Buffy suggested heading back inside, Faith considered it for a moment. But she thought about all the guys inside, how the music was loud and the beer was cheap. She got an idea -- and yes, maybe it was because she really did want to see just how much this chick knew about the dangers of the city.

"A not-so-legal drink sounds like a solid plan. But if we're gonna break the law, why not actually do it with good booze? I heard there's a place downtown that's a little lax on IDs," she explained. "Plus, since you're a local and all, you can make sure we don't get lost. You in?"

christmas was never easy, not since mom. and yet this year, buffy felt warmer, a little more joyful, even. it wasn't a sunnydale christmas, but it was something. maybe better.

dawn's somewhere upstairs with spike and giles, and she can hear andrew bickering with the others in another room about what ingredient the nog in egg nog is. typical.

buffy, who always felt a bit grinch-like during this time of year, had just concocted two mugs of hot cocoa and placed one carefully in front of faith, with extra whip cream and cinnamon added to it. she wraps her fingers around her mug and sips, licking the residual whip cream from her top lip. " first christmas with you since that snowy sunnydale one. " reminiscing isn't always fun; makes her sad, mostly. but, that had been a good one. " i always had a suspicion that it was you who spiked the egg nog that year. " and buffy laughs, 'cause there was something worth laughing about. faith was here, with her. and it was christmas, and maybe this was exactly what she needed.

moments alone with faith were few and far between, so she selfishly was going to relish in it. guilt - free.

ROBIN WAS ALWAYS MORE THAN HAPPY TO HELP WHEN IT CAME FOR THE FIGHT AGAINST EVIL. his answer was always an enthusiastic 'yes' when buffy needed him for his muscles or even knowledge. he wanted to be helpful and make his mother proud, that's all he ever really wanted, and with the first parading around with the face of his mother, there was nothing more he'd like to do then to take this evil thing down. that's why he was here; patrolling alongside @wickedlehane , enjoying her company and her wit and even the valuable advice she'd throw his way ( when she was in a good mood, anyway ).

WITH HIS STAKE IN HAND, AT THE READY, AND HIS HIP PRACTICALLY CONNECTED TO HERS, THEY WALKED IN SYNC THROUGH THE FOG OF THE SUNNYDALE CEMETERY. faith had spunk and this positive, fun light he wasn't used to being around. it was definitely something he could get used to; something he knew deep down he needed currently in his life. he was hooked on something that he couldn't seem to let go of... avenging his mother. he looked over at her as he walked, “ i think i'm still figuring out the dynamic of the group back at buffy's house. i feel like i can't get a good read on --- what's that blonde guy's name ? spike. what's his story [ .... ] ” he asked, trying to be subtle because all the while, he knew damn well who that infamous vampire was. the son of a bitch that killed his mother, the same one that took away his whole life and childhood.

Staring after the ambulance (and for a split second looking like she might move towards it), Stef's glance quickly turned to Buffy. "You didn't tell me?"

Stef and the other Slayer had been...close...once. Before things went completely off the rails. So the fact that her sister hadn't even texted her a heads up...

        ❝    y’know , giles and wesley think we’re out on patrol. shouldn’t we be doing that ? especially with these big evil books going missing ?    ❞    buffy pointed out , talking loudly over the music at the bronze. the mayor was up to something but yet here they were, at the bronze acting as though everything was normal. faith insisted on having a night out but buffy doesn’t think they could afford it right now.

There were so many ways in which New Sunnydale was just like Old Sunnydale, including the revolving door of teenagers that seemed to frequent the Summers-Pratt home. There were Buffy and Spike's two (Sara and James). Willow and Tara's girl (Arwyn(. Her half brother (Stevie), who belonged to Xander and Anya -- Xander having been the witches' donor. Oz's girl (Cherie Ann). The Mayor's daughter (Abigail). And occasionally, the LA contingent. Amythest and Angel's two (Connor and Kathy) who came to join their cousins and help stir up trouble.

Not to mention Faith's own daughter, Fiona.

And as Halloween was right around the corner, well...they were all there in force. Making plans.

"So wait... Halloween is REALLY devoid of demon activity? Like somehow the spookiest night of the year is also the safest?" In Arwyn's mind that just didn't compute. Shouldn't Halloween be the night when all hell broke loose? What about the whole thing with the veil between worlds being its thinnest?

"That's what they say...right?" Helping herself to a soda from the fridge, Fiona popped the top and looked over at her mom. She'd been through more than a few Halloweens...if anyone knew what really went on then, it was her.

Buffy eyed the wand that Faith has handed to her. It was bright pink mascara, which she had protested would look ridiculous. Like she had pink eye or worse, was some try hard scene kid. Faith shook her head and slyly corrected her.

"It's for my hair?" Buffy laughed. "God, like I'm sixteen again."

She shook her head but took a couple strands out of her messy bun. Just as she remembered, it was gummy and she used her fingers to apply the garish substance as much as the wand. Still, there was something pleasantly nostalgic about them sharing a mirror to get ready for a night out.

"So where are we goin' ?"

†  ――――        BUFFY  STOOD  THERE  IN  PURE  AWE  IN  WHAT  FAITH  HAD  ARRANGED  FOR  HER  BIRTHDAY.  who  knew  faith  was  so  creatively  specific?   i  suppose  she  did  know  her  better  than  anyone  else  did  because  only  faith  would  know  that  this  was  perfect  entertainment  on  a  normally  awful  day  of  the  year.  she  nudged  the  other  slayer  with  her  elbow  in  amusement,  chuckling  and  gleaming  with  happiness.  she  canted  her  head  at  faith,  a  blush  heating  up  her  cheeks,         ❛      thanks,  faith,  you  sure  know  a  way  to  a  slayer's  heart  on  her  birthday.  props  to  you       ❜     she  complimented,  grin  unwavering,      ❛      well,  they  have  no  idea  what's  in  store  for  them,  huh     ?       ❜     buffy  replied,  looking  back  at  the  vampires  with  a  devilish  smirk  gracing  her  lips.       

❛      YOUR  MISTAKE       ❜     she  told  their  foes,  giving  a  final  nod  to  faith  before  sprinting  at  the  vampire  in  the  middle.  he  attempted  to  stop  her  with  a  swing  of  his  fist  but,  she  was  quicker  and  ducked  his  attack  and  followed  through  with  a  swipe  at  his  legs,  causing  the  vampire  to  fall  onto  the  ground  with  a  hard  thump.  she  rolls  onto  the  fallen  foe  and  straddles  him,  lunging  her  wooden  weapon  straight  through  his  heart,  combusting  into  a  pile  of  dust.  buffy  was  quick  to  get  back  onto  her  feet,  standing  in  between  both  of  the  vampires  that  carried  puzzled  looks  upon  their  features.  she  tilted  her  head  towards  faith  as  she  spoke,      ❛      i  think  they  just  realized  they  did  their  math  wrong       ❜     she  chuckled.  she  grabbed  one  of  their  enemies  and  tossed  him  towards  faith,  watching  him  fly  before  sending  a  harsh  jab  at  the  other's  cheek.  this  was  the  kind  of  action  she  was  hoping  for.

Look, Faith knew she wasn't the sharpest crayon in the box. But she wasn't a complete idiot. And even if Buffy didn't like surprises, it wasn't like the brunette slayer was walking them into an ambush or something. No, in fact, she's rather tickled when the trio of vampires emerge bearing the paper party hats Faith had arranged with them earlier.

"Surprise! Happy birthday, B," she laughed, her own smile growing at Buffy's clear amusement at the situation. "Figured it was cleaner'n getting a pinata all set up. The trade off bein' there's not exactly any candy."

The vampires were clearly irritated seeing the slayers discussing their presence like they weren't there. "I told 'em it was your birthday and that we were gonna patrol and all... well, I promised I'd lead the slayer right to them and I guess I did. Didn't say what we'd do after that."

One of the trio looked visibly disappointed, and the others slapped their hands across his chest to stand him upright.

"Two slayers, three of us. I like these odds," one hissed, putting his game face on.

Faith clapped her hands. "Seriously, boys -- I really appreciate you showin' up for B on her big day. It'll be the best birthday she's had in years." She turned to Buffy and then tilted her head at the vamps. "Wanna do the honors, party girl?"

They break off from the group to take a walk, once Spike is well and good in his chair and rope prison again. Where he should be. Definitely not lounging on the couch with a wedding planner. Meanwhile, Buffy’s suffering from a case of periodic wiggins in the form of full body chills and mortified disgust. “A hot shower won’t even cover it. I need the type of hose down that involves guys in hazmat suits. I feel icky with extra yuck.” It’s putting a situation that creates a free-will conundrum in Buffy’s head very lightly, especially when it involves heated make outs with someone other than the one person who should be on the receiving end of those heated make outs. It was the spell, not her, but there’s still a knot of discomfort sitting heavy in her stomach when she looks to Faith with worry, creating a crease in her forehead. Not to mention she wasn’t the only one who directly suffered from Willow’s spell. “Are you okay?”
