My messy #maytbr. I have many conflicting priorities for this month. First there are three books here for #readtheworld21: PARADISE OF THE BLIND has been on my shelves for ages, WE, THE SURVIVORS I ordered just for this challenge, and WICKED AS YOU WISH I actually bought for my teen, but when I saw the author is from the Philippines I stole it (temporarily). I am trying to read at least two poetry collections per month, so TRICKSTER FEMINISM, but I haven’t decided on another yet. Then there are a bunch of small indie press books that I have been compulsively ordering lately, and so I picked out a few of those — THE SNOW COLLECTORS, HOMESICK, CRADLE AND GRAVE, and WOMEN. AN ELEGANT DEFENSE is really because we are in the middle of a pandemic, and THE BATTLE OF THE LABYRINTH is because I have been in a YA/MG mood lately. As you can see, there are a lot of impulses that may cause me to jump wildly off of this tentative TBR, but that’s okay with me. The only book I will actually be disappointed in myself for if I don’t get it read is PARADISE OF THE BLIND. Wicked As You Wish is an incredibly relevant and self aware book. It wasn't necessarily the best fit for me as the description and actual book didn't seem to mesh in my head in terms of what I expected and what it ended up being.😩 I still firmly believe it has quite broad appeal and is a wonderful way to pass the time. The chapter headers are brilliant and never fail to make me laugh and it's refreshing to have that little snapshot to continue the story but also help you focus. I loved the many references to fairy tales and fantasy stories that were spread out through the book and the magical realism vibes was different to my usual reads but well done💫 I was a bit let down with the character building😭 and felt disconnected with some characters and I think the fact my favorite character was a fire bird (which BTW OMG I'm in love🔥) says a lot about the human characters. I did love the Filipinx references and Tagalog throughout the book though and I felt it added an extra sense of realism and heart to the story. I have a couple of Filipina friends and colleagues previously and rarely see them represented in literature and the fire and passion of their families was beautifully represented in this book❤ Overall this was a neutral read for me. It’s finally the weekend! I have to work again on Sunday night, but I’m going to enjoy these two days off! ⁣ ⁣ So it’s (unfortunately) official . . . I have my first DNF of 2020. I started reading Wicked As You Wish by Rin Chupeco about a week ago and I’ve read about 100 pages. I just can’t get into it. I received an ARC of Wicked As You Wish at Book Expo back in May. ⁣ ⁣ My main issue is the combination of information dumping but still confusion. ⁣ This book is the definition of info dump. There was so much information, history, world building, and background presented very quickly. I would be ok with this IF it was done well and everything made sense. But despite the vomiting of info, I have no idea what’s going on. It’s super confusing even though it really shouldn’t be. 100 pages in and I don’t understand how the magic works at all! ⁣ ⁣ It’s such a bummer / I hate being hard on books, but I have to be honest! It also seems like a lot of goodreads reviewers agree with my opinion. I also can’t stand not finishing books I start, but this one was driving me crazy. ⁣I do have to say that the ARC cover is so pretty! ⁣ Have you read Wicked As You Wish? 📚 𝗪𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗪𝗶𝘀𝗵 by Rin Chupeco . I read this book while I was on holiday. I loved Rin Chupeco’s series entitled The Bone Witch and I was looking forward to her dark writing style in this new series and did not find it. I tried to find an anchor in the story and was unable to get in it. I love how she described the Filipino way of life of her main character; that made me smile. I have a few friends from the Philippines and recognised their sense of community in the story. Unfortunately, the story and the characters sounded recycled from other books and fairy tales, and they did not bring anything new. . I am disappointed in this first book in the series and will most likely not continue reading it. However, don’t let this honest review distract you from reading this author.
