I read a comment on a review of the Wicked movie. Dude was ranting in this comment about how ridiculous it was that they made the Wicked Witch of the West merely misunderstood rather than evil, and turned the Wizard into the villain. I originally wanted to reply to the comment that it's basically social commentary about the power of propaganda, but didn't want to set up an account to be able to comment. And then I thought about it a bit. And, well...
Hot take, but even without the recontextualization from Wicked, Glinda and the Wizard weren't actually good people in the original book and movie, either.
Glinda comes along, puts those shoes on Dorothy - thus painting a giant target on the girl's back - and then sends her to spend days walking alone to get to the Emerald City. Knowing full well that now that she had those shoes, the Wicked Witch of the West was going to be after her. All while apparently already having the means to send her home? If those shoes could have done it from the start, why the fuck didn't you just tell her that from the beginning? She sent this twelve year old girl off to possibly be murdered by a witch for absolutely no good reason.
And that's without getting into whether she knew either that the Wizard had no real power and/or what his price would be for helping her. If she knew he had no real power? Then she sent this literal child on this dangerous journey knowing that nothing would actually come of it. If she knew what his price would be? Then, either Dorothy would be killed, or she would be TRAUMATIZED FOR LIFE by being turned into a murderer, herself. And we won't even get into if she knew both.
To be honest, by making the Wicked Witch actually not so wicked and just misunderstood and the victim of propaganda, it softens GLINDA up, too. Because we can now give her the benefit of the doubt that maybe she was trusting Elphaba to not actually hurt Dorothy. And maybe hoping that Dorothy could do what she was too much of a coward to do and expose the Wizard for what he was.
And then there's the Wizard. He knew damn well that he couldn't help this girl. And rather than admit that, he tells her that he'll only help her if she kills the Wicked Witch of the West. So, again, he sends this twelve year old girl off knowing full well that either she will die, or she will do what he asked and get nothing out of it. Honestly? Hard not to assume he was HOPING she wouldn't be back. He literally sent this literal child off to be murdered because better she die than he be exposed as a fraud.
Maybe Wicked didn't actually turn the Wizard into the villain of the story at all. If all it took to turn him into the villain of the story was his part in turning Elphaba into the Wicked Witch of the West, maybe he was ALWAYS one of the villains in Dorothy's story to begin with.

Really excited for this moment in Wicked Part 1 for obvious reasons, but also because I'm curious as to why Elphaba is crying. In the original show (and seemingly this movie because the line about it is still there), Elphaba is supposed to be putting on a front that the teasing doesn't hurt her, so if she’s crying and Galinda wipes her tears away, which didn't happen in the original show, it must be for a different reason other than the bullying, since the mask wouldn't slip. Is it because Galinda dances with her despite the potential blow to her status? Which is essentially the first time anyone’s shown her genuine kindness.

Everyone listen, this is not a drill!!! Yesterday we finally got some leaks of Ethan as Boq! It's on an outdoor Shiz set, and it looks like they were filming move in day for the Shiz students.
Here's a pic of him with Galinda
Tumblr media
It's kinda hard to see him in this one, but here he is amongst the other students
Tumblr media
I think this one is out of character, but here is is talking to a crew member.

This one is also out of character, Ethan talking to Ariana

Thank you Ariana 😌
Funny because that more pop version of the song with Ari already exists, so that would've been extra useless.

I expected Idina and Kristin to have cameos, but never imagined they’d have an entire verse to sing during One Short Day. I cried tears of joy.

I don’t think we talk enough about how the entirety of Wicked is built on the irony of No One Mourns the Wicked. The musical exists because Glinda feels the need to tell Elphaba’s story, because she is in mourning and entirely alone in that. Glinda’s love is what creates the musical because no one mourns Elphaba except her, and that is an incredibly lonely place to be. She’s just lost two of the most important people to her, and all she’s trying to do is make someone, anyone else see how important they were.

I definitely predict that this scene will be used as foreshadowing for the cornfield fight later :3

I hope this is during “what is this feeling”. And it would be so funny if they dropped their tools while playing this game and physically went at it with their hands in a juvenile way. And then they do that again in the cornfield for part 2. As if to say they're “loathing” love for each other hasn't changed. 💚🩷
