I made some test prints today (7/18/21) for the first time and it didn't go exactly how I had hoped.

I started off by diluting my developer and stop bath with distilled water. I was using Ilford Ilfospeed Multigrade II developer at a 1:9 dilution, and Ilfostop Stop Bath at a 1:19 dilution. I used the same Kodak Fixer I've been using for my film, and then tap water for the final rinse. I have previously accidentally used tap water for diluting my film processing chemicals, and there was no noticeable difference. I don't know the ph of our well water, but we don't filter or chlorinate anything, so I guess it's fine.

I double-checked the room I'm working in for any accidental light, and then focused a negative in the enlarger and took out my paper.

Although I have a package of new paper, I wanted to stick with the paper I got from my high school. I started off with Ilfospeed Multigrade II 5" x 7" paper. I set the timer on my enlarger to 5 seconds and covered one strip of the paper at a time five times so there would be five strips of different exposures, one of 5 seconds, 10, 15, 20, and 25.

On the paper's package, it said that it would take anywhere from 1 minute to 2 minutes and 30 seconds. After about 30 seconds in the developer, the paper had turned completely black. I tried it again, with an exposure time of 5 seconds and a development time of 25 seconds, and again it turned back before I could get it into the stop bath.

With an exposure time of 2.5 seconds and a development time of 25 seconds, I got this as a result.

I don't have a scanned version to post, but the negative I used was very high contrast. The leaves should have been very dark even for the time the paper was exposed, and the sky, though not white, should have been very light in comparison to the leaves. This print, though, is very low contrast, just a shade of muddy grey.

there is a very good chance that the paper I was using was expired and ad most likely been incorrectly stored before I got it, and though it was in the light safe back inside the box, it had been previously used so I didn't know what issues were from my process and materials, and what was just the paper.

I still didn't want to waste my new paper, so I decided to try a sheet of the Kodak Professional Polycontrast Rapid II RC 8"x 10" paper.

After a messed-up test print (with the strips of different exposures), I got this with an exposure of 5 seconds and a development time of 25 seconds.

It looks exactly the same as the other print, same dark grey, low contrast crap. same as the other one, there is a weird swirly pattern of uneven tones, and the even the past edges of where the light was projected from the enlarger, it's grey.

I don't think its from any accidental light in my darkroom, and the developer and stop bath were were brand new unopened chemicals that I know were correctly diluted and evenly mixed with the distilled water.

Aside from the obvious assumption that its just bad paper, I think there might be some problems with my enlarger and the way its projecting light. I think there is an issue with both the bulb (wich was old but completely unused) and the way the lens of it focuses. The light is pretty dim even when it's aperture is wide open, and there is almost a halo effect past the edge of the opening for the negative, even when the image is focused. My mom has a friend who did film photography in college so I'm going to have him take a look at it next time he's over.
