Has writing fic changed your life?

Because I'm curious and inquisitive, feel free to ignore me.

Fic writing specifically is such a collaborative process. You're often joining a conversation that has already been going on for a long time, or rather, it's like moving into a new building and getting to know all these different people who all have something to teach you, if you're willing to listen.

By writing fic I've met so many wonderful people that I'd be too shy to ever speak to, people who have become very good friends that went beyond that specific fandom itself. In that way, yeah, it's really changed my life. It's a very social, joyful thing.

On the other hand, writing fic is sometimes so painful because it exposes flaws in the things that you love, in the storytelling/narrative, because (at least for me) suddenly the pieces are in your hands, and you find out that they don't actually fit together the way you thought they did. And suddenly you're examining things with a new, more critical perspective, engaging with the material in a way that usually leads to either an intense appreciation for something you hadn't given much thought to, or a begrudging love/hate of something you'd previously accepted. Like, you never have quite the same relationship towards a Beloved Thing after writing fic for it. Sometimes, characters that you used to dislike are now the blorblo you'd die for. The pairing you liked now just sits too saccharine with you, but turn it into a threesome and it all suddenly CLICKS, and you would have never considered it if you hadn't followed the muse down that path.

Writing fic is a love letter to discovery. It's often hard, but it's always a labor of love, and for someone like me who in the past often felt jailed in my head with nothing but negative feelings, it's been the key to stepping outside of that.

Do you have a specific writing ritual or preferred location?

I have two locations I tend to write in: my bedroom desk (which also happens to be where I work when I'm at home) and the couch. I tend to write more at my desk, but edit sitting crisscross-applesauce on the couch with my laptop on my lap.

I don't have writing rituals per se, but all my writing sessions include a lot of research. For fanfics I usually have 2-4 tabs of Wookiepedia, and all writing includes at least one tab of either Deepl or synonym websites 😅

Oh, and a glass of water. I always have one nearby.

Last Line Tag Game

I have a confession. I have written words for another lifeguard AU that isn't my current WIP And We're Spinning With the Stars Above for the @obikinlifeguardau collection 🛟.

It's an idea that @grapenehifics and I were giggling about, but I couldn't stop thinking about it, and my usual solution is to write it down and get it out of my system. But it will. Not. Stop. So this is what I've been working on in the last few days.

It's still far from being finished, and def will not be done by the end of August. (As much as I want to cling to summer, school and fall sports start up in a week and my schedule's going to get very chaotic very quickly.)

And yes, this is not a line or even a paragraph. It's... ugh, it's under the cut...

“I apologize, but I’m… just a lifeguard,” Obi-Wan says, sliding his sunglasses to rest on the top of his head. The lenses are no longer muting the saturation of color around him, and his fingers itch to touch the errant bronze curl falling over the too-blue eyes that he can’t stop staring into. “I’m not really here to settle disputes among beachgoers.”

The man glances toward the water, sighing, and crosses his arms over his chest, popping his hip to the side. It’s impossible not to notice his biceps, a ghost of a tan line cutting across them, exposed by the white sleeveless shirt he’s wearing.

“And you’ve spoken to the adults or guardians with the children and they are of no help?” Obi-Wan asks.

“I could really use an authority figure to step in,” the man insists, turning back to Obi-Wan. “I’m at my wit’s end—”

“Dad!”

Obi-Wan startles when the little girl announces her arrival with her shrill yell and a firm stomp of her small foot in the sand. He takes in her pink and purple bathing suit, the angry expression on her face, and the even angrier little buns that her hair’s been twisted into behind each ear.

The man looks down at the girl, pure exasperation written on his features.

“Leia, I told you to wait by the blanket,” he says, pointing toward an area about twenty feet away with a beach umbrella and a large blanket holding an assortment of beach toys, towels, and sunscreen bottles.

“Are you tattling on us to the lifeguard?” the girl demands. She tips her chin up defiantly.

The man with the pretty hair and pretty eyes—and honestly, pretty everything—flinches a bit in response, but glowers back at her.

Obi-Wan looks between the two of them as a silent staring content ensues.

“The children who were kicking over your sand castle are your own children?” Obi-Wan asks carefully, narrowing his eyes.

Summary: After the Clone Wars, Anakin and Obi-Wan leave the Jedi Order and settle in Alderaan. They want to live happily ever, but Anakin needs to face his own demons.

Title from Wilfred Owen's poem, "Dulce et Decorum Est" because that line is absolutely fitting for this fic. I generally don't write angst, but this idea came to me months ago and wouldn't let me go . . . until the evil writer's block of doom came and stayed with me for much too long. But I finally finished this fic, which I'd started back in November 2023 . . . let's just say I'm thrilled to finally complete this! This is also my 100th works on AO3! Many thanks to @to-proudly-go, @fulcrum843, @wibzenadarksiderwithasoftheart, @kidrest, @veloursdor, and @renlyslittlerose for cheering me on and helping with this fic! Here's what I last wrote for do not long for anything, an angsty Clone Wars fic. Can't say much about it because it has a disturbing twist, but it's about Obi-Wan, Cody, Ventress, Dooku, and other fleeting accumulations of cells that should never long for anything.

“Master,” says a quiet voice behind him, “I’m back. The Nightsister clan has been dealt with, as you commanded.” Dooku does not turn. “A thousand-flower.” Its stem with the delicate drop-shaped leaves curls around his fingers. The blossom stares back at him, a tiny golden eye with blue lashes. “It was my late brother who introduced them to our gardens, undoubtedly one of his less ambitious whimsies to better this world. He acquired a few specimens from a traveling botanist who, I’m sure, extolled their simplicity in cultivation. If left unchecked, they propagate with an almost absurd efficiency. Remarkable, isn’t it?”

My dad’s surgery is behind us 🙌 We got kicked out of the hospital until tomorrow. He probably won’t be awake until then anyway. Long recovery ahead, but the triple bypass was a success!

After 5 days of megacon craziness (and getting news of the heart attack in the middle of it) then running to my parents’ house the next state over as soon as I got home, I can finally kick back this evening. Hello, tumblr 😃

It was one week ago, almost to the minute, when @wibzenadarksiderwithasoftheart and I met face to face. I had jokingly asked her to bring the snow with her when she came, and she did! Look at this! It really is snow from Denmark! We are full-on spring weather here now, but I can’t wait to decorate with these gorgeous handmade ornaments next winter… But the Vader key ring is year round 😍 I love him! Thanks so much 💕

1. Are you named after anyone?

Nope!

2. When was the last time you cried?

Hmm 🤔 I'm not sure tbh, maybe last week? Two weeks ago? Less than a month most likely. Just felt bad about myself and had a good cry.

3. Do you have kids?

No kids, nor do I want any.

4. What sports do you play/ have you played?

Dance (contemporary and a bit of modern jazz) when I was a kid but I didn't learn much even though i started when i was 3 or 4 i think, and did maybe 8(?) years of it.

Circus for 9 years.

Taekwondo for 2 years (I think you're supposed to be a yellow belt after only two years but my teacher gave me the blue belt so 🤷 guess I'm a blue belt).

Self defense for 1 year.

And ski and snowboard since I grew up in the alps though I barely took any classes, mostly just with my parents.

(☝️ This is making me look super sporty even though I'm really not lol)

(+ all the sports I had to do in PE class in school. I really liked rock climbing, orienteering and step aerobics)

5. Do you use sarcasm?

All the time!

6. What's the first thing you notice about people?

Either clothes or hair I think? I'm not very observant or a good judge of character so it has to be something obvious.

7. What's your eye colour?

Blue 🧿🧿

8. Scary movies or happy endings?

Happy endings! I don't really like scary movies, though I love suspens and action that get you on the edge of your seat.

9. Any talents?

I have pretty fast reflex? Not sure that's a talent but I'm good at games where you have to catch something or put cards down faster than the other players. Actually I'm good at board games in general (unless I'm playing against my brother, he's way better that me).

10. Where were you born?

In the french alps 🇨🇵🏔

11. What are your hobbies?

Reading (I wish it was more books (it used to be) but honestly most of the time it's mostly fics), playing video games, sewing, knitting, crocheting, random arts and crafts that I'll drop a week later, watching movies and going to the cinema, astronomy (mostly just stargazing so far but one day I'll buy a telescope), playing board games, travelling (does it count as a hobby?), daydreaming about star wars characters...

12. Do you have any pets?

Sort of? I've always had cats at my mom's house but since I moved out it's mostly my mom's cat? But it's also mine and my sister's. Idk it's our cat.

(My mom also has a dog but that's her dog, not mine)

13. How tall are you?

169 cm (which is 5'6" or 5'7" i think)

14. Favourite subject in school?

Maths and Latin

(I was also very good at physics but I didn't love it for some reason, even though that was the most interesting)

15. Dream job?

Prop guy or costume maker in movies (not the designers, the people who actually make the stuff). Or somehow living off of making cosplay and stuff like that (through YouTube and Instagram I guess).

(I'm not actually trying to do any of that though, I don't think I have the skills to do it)

Assistance Required!

Friends. Romans. Fellow Fans! I need your help! Thanks to this amazing idea by the wonderful @wibzenadarksiderwithasoftheart a new AU has taken hold of me and is not letting me go. It's gone so far that I'm planning for this AU to become my NaNoWriMo project! (Kinktober may be put on hiatus for now as I'm feeling a bit kinked out to be honest, but the Epilogue of Half-Pass is coming very, very soon!) So this will be a "Dancing with the Stars" AU. I will not share much more details because ... well, it's supposed to be a surprise after all, but I'm looking for songs that Obi-Wan and Anakin could dance to during this show <3 So ... please recommend songs, either one's you just think are "Obikin-coded" or that you just love as dancing songs (any dance, so no limits to waltzes :D) And don't you worry, I already have a Molin Rouge song on the list xD Thank you! 38. What is something about your writing process YOU think is Really Weird? If you are comfortable, please share. If you’re not comfortable, what do you think cats say about us?

HM. HMMM.

I guess the fact that I really don't know what's going on at times? I'll be here, typing away all happy, plot is going good, and then suddenly character A derails everything on a dime by not reacting the way they should. And then I realize, ohh, fuck, this was overdue, wasn't it? I THOUGHT things were going well, that the plot was going to keep going a -> b -> c but all along, I was writing something else. And then I have to sit there for a bit and decide whether this is the fic I want to continue, or if I want to go back and nip this in the bud. A good example of this would be from the end of kiss the ring and fear the crown:

“Obi-Wan Kenobi.” The man offered his hand, much like he’d done during their first meeting. A signet ring gleamed on his pinkie, a flash of something that looked like a sword against some sort of circular symbol. Anakin didn’t see clearly what it was before he was shaking it.  And then he pulled, not pulling Obi-Wan closer, but instead stepping into his space to brush his lips against the man’s ear, pitching his voice low. “I don’t fuck with drug dealers or pimps or anyone who takes advantage of the vulnerable. I won’t hurt anyone for you. I won’t hide bodies for you. I’m not your whore or your dog, I’m your mechanic. Got it, Mr. Kenobi?” 

and suddenly I knew what kind of fic I had on my hands. That was NOT supposed to be what Anakin said but, welp. Here we are now. 👀👀 <3 u wib! (from this cool ask list!)

My Character Introduction

I was asked by both @wibzenadarksiderwithasoftheart and @piecesofeden11 to answer the following question from this ask game:

1. Describe yourself how you would describe a character you’re introducing

This was an insane exercise. I definitely cried while writing this and I'm just gonna post it before I overthink it!

The sound of her voice appears before she does, loud and full, bright with the laugh that seems to always be hiding behind her teeth. It feels like she should wear more color, constantly wrapped in blacks and grays that do nothing to bring out the green in her eyes but it seems like she’s always trying to fade into the background in a way that boisterous personality of hers will never allow. Her smile is crooked and easy, though there are times it feels like a bit of a show — still trying to unlearn habits trained into a little girl with nothing but the mask of a comedian to hide behind.

She’s pretty and she knows it, though the days of free drinks at the bar from men vying for her touch are well in the past — silver streaking across the front of her hairline like the beautiful mutant superhero from her childhood.

She’s always too loud, though people act strange when she’s quiet. She’s the life of every party she didn’t want to go to and has a knack for finding trouble. She’s never able to swallow her words and is somehow still a better listener than most.

She cries less than she laughs, but she often does them at the same time.

She’s far from perfect, but she’s usually right. 

She’s always herself.

Even when she’s not.

She’s a contradiction and exactly what you’d expect.

You just have to find out for yourself.

The last line I wrote was for my Obikin big bang so shh 🤫 I shouldn't share. I haven't had much time to work on anything else, so these are the last lines I wrote for the WIP that I worked on before the big bang:

Whatever Anakin’s been drugged with seems to have triggered some kind of arousal response because when Obi-Wan glances over, he sees his Padawan pressing the heel of his hand into the space between his thighs.

“Master," Anakin whimpers. "My dick."

1. Are you named after anyone?

No, but my parents had an interesting way of naming my sister and me. If we were boys my mom got to name is, girls and my dad got to name us.

2. When was the last time you cried?

A couple days ago, I think. I cry a lot. 😅

3. Do you have kids?

Only of the animal variety! I actually got surgically sterilized last year because I am very happy in my role as aunt and cat mom. 💖

4. What sports do you play/ have you played?

If knitting were a professional sport I'd be an Olympian.

5. Do you use sarcasm?

Alllllll the timeeeee.

6. What's the first thing you notice about people?

How nice they are. Not in the way that they might be mean, but that they might be too nice. If someone's too nice I don't trust them.

7. What's your eye colour?

Green!

8. Scary movies or happy endings?

Always a happy ending! I actually can't tolerate scary movies at all.

9. Any talents?

I'm a very good knitter! And I think I'm an alright crocheter, but that's a much newer endeavor for me.

10. Where were you born?

Oregon, USA, born and bred!

11. What are your hobbies?

Knitting, crocheting, and a little bit of writing!

12. Do you have any pets?

I have two kitty cats! A ginger tabby boy named Theo and a secret calico (she looks like a tortie, but she's got a white bikini on her tummy, a white chin, and white ankle socks) girl named Arya.

13. How tall are you?

5' 6" (and a half 😂)

14. Favourite subject in school?

Always the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) classes! Though I'm also a MAJOR supporter of adding the arts in that abbreviation to make it STEAM, because nurturing the arts is incredibly important for societal and personal progression and development.

15. Dream job?

To retire and volunteer at OMSI (the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry). If you're ever in Portland, Oregon, you NEED to go to OMSI. It's the best.
