BRAVE NEW WORLD REVIEW

Okay, opening weekend is done Lovelies!! I need to talk about it- SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Sam Wilson is Captain America!! Period. Point. Blank.

I loved the fight scenes. When Sam said he's meaner without the suit, he meant that shit, because how do you get stabbed- twice- and then keep fighting, and win, with the knives sticking out? Stop playing with him!

I nearly cried when Isaiah got arrested, and I honestly thought he was gonna try to run. Then when he told Sam not to come back and not to give him hope again, my heart sank.

Joaquin Torres is baby. When he got hit by that missile the first thing I thought about was Sam watching Riley go down. And I really did tear again up when they were talking about the pressure of living up to their predecessor. (Marvel better not waste his character like they're doing/did with Shang-Chi, Moon Knight, Blade, Wanda, the X-Men/all their mutant based storylines....)

That Bucky cameo!! Sorry, I mean future Congressman James Buchanan Barnes, he's got my vote. (A Random: But what about the people he murdered? Me: What murder?) But truthfully, I love that not only is Bucky keeping in contact with Sam, but he showed up when he knew Sam would need him. Sam really could've used a super soldier during that fight with Red Hulk though, just saying. But he held his own.

The easter eggs and callbacks to adamantium and The Incredible Hulk (2008) were great building blocks for the movies. Because I always wondered whatever happened to Sterns after being infected with Bruce's blood, since that storyline is/was apart of the MCU timeline. And what's about to happen now that EVERYONE has access to adamantium, aka the only metal that can rival vibranium.

My only grievances:

1. Ross's security detail, that I guess is supposed to be "the widow" of the movie. From what I understand, both the character and the actress are controversial, but the movie was already made before major world events. She was just annoying to me, and tbh they could've brought Sharon back for this. (I do agree though, I would also make the age gap work for Bucky.)

2. I think they could've saved the Red Hulk reveal for the actual release of the movie and played Ross's high stress moments has another heart attack or fighting off the mind control methods.

3. There were poor CGI moments but when you have to show a gigantic celestial head and hand sticking out the Earth, aerial fight scenes, and Red Hulk, I can see where they used the budget, and who couldn't make it to set that day.

Wade keeps making jokes about getting nailed by Thor's hammer. Logan does the thing where he sets it down on Wade's chest and is like you can't move now you're not worthy bub. Turns out Logan is into roleplaying.

Wade, his sad look pierces him thru half ripped mask: I knew I couldn’t do it… why did I even fucking try?

Thor, bitterly smiling: Buddy, hey, it’s okay, breathe… you can do this, you can heal

Wade: My body… Fuck— it hurts, so fucking bad

Thor: Wade… look at me! Wade, please!

Wade, reaches up to touch his shoulder, his hand shakes as he does so, giving his last strength for this touch: Hey, thundercloud, Could you please… if you see Colossius, tell him he was my bestest buddy ever? And to Logan… that it was worth… worth everything?

Thor feels a tear roll down his cheek: Yes, Wade, I promise… I will

After, Wades arm drop with the last breath, near limp and lifeless body.

Grey skies never left since that day, and rain drops were coming down the city, as fast as Logan’s tears. Waking up everyday was a torture, a meaningless routine becoming more miserable and hard to keep up. Even with the room full of people, Logan felt bitterly alone.

All the blame lays on him, though it was never his fault in the first place. He knew he could’ve done something to prevent this. But he didn’t. And now, the perfect world, as he used to describe it, became a hellish place, where he feels million times more guilty, hates himself like never before.

Hot tears burn his skin, and painful whimper escapes his lips, that’s when Wade would come running to wipe them off and hold him close. Alas, he’s alone. Never in a thousand years he thought he could feel so alone and small. Until now.

But as they run down his face, suddenly, hands reach out around his back, locking his eyes shut. In confusion, he hears Peekaboo, Peanut!

Wade: Anddd as that piece of shit did his hockus pocus and slammed me into the ground, my life literally flashed in from of me! Haha, I thought I was dead already!

Logan simply looks at him, up and down, nothing on his mind but pure happiness. Wade— being funny, laughing off his own temporary death, smiling and sipping beer like in good old days. Life has a meaning now.

Wade: But y’know what? Y’all are jerks, how dare you put that awful picture of me on my grave?! Speaking of, I crawled out of it, definitely getting the tightest sleep in my life, fuck, I was well rested, dug myself out of that bitch and ready to whip the shit out again!

Logan: Wade?

Wade: Yeah?

He barely holds back, as eyes shine with tears.

Logan: I was ready to get back to my old timeline, because I wouldn’t be able to live here, where every single thing reminds me of you. It felt like the best life I ever received… slipped through my fingers, gone, with you, goddamn it

Logan feels his heart breaking in thought of what his life would’ve become after Wades passing. But pieces back together knowing Wade is in front of him right now, safe and sound.

Wade: Peanut… believe me, I shouldn’t be a reason for mourning—

Logan: Shut the fuck up, please, I never wanna hear that shit again, understand?

They stand in silence, eyes into eyes. Wade puts the beer down on the window seal.

Wade: Okay, sweetheart

Logan, finally letting emotions pour over: Thank you

Logan embraces Wades shoulders in a tightest hug, feeling his wild heartbeat. Wade doesn’t question, responding with the same gentle wrap around his waist, as he himself begins to tear up into his hoodie. After a brief taste of cold 6 feet under, Logan’s warmth feels like breath of heaven.

Logan, softly sobbing: Thank you… for coming back

Wade, giving Logan’s neck a gentle kiss: I will always find my way to come back to you, Peanut. In every timeline. I promise.

Logan’s fingers dig hard into Wades shirt in a wave of joy, but then he lets go of him, enough to shift his hands on his chest, to tug onto the fabric, and pulls Wade into the softest kiss, as warm hands remain on his waist, holding Logan like Wade will never let go.

[Deadpool’s monologue as the scene progresses]

“I made a terrible mistake, like a shit-eating, embarrassing misconception! Throughout my life I was chasing Vanessa like a stray dog chasing down its old owner on the drug-needle-soacking-wet streets of Manhattan. Dude, imagine being so stupidly blind like me— everything I could ever as for, was there with me all along, following into every shithole, every fight, every goddamn challenge life threw at my face, but he was with me! Like, dude, he was ready to die for my timeline and my friends, abandon his old life and hop through the hoops to save everyone. But he saved me first! Predicting Cordelia's last resolve

I wish I could write something more sensible and optimistic, but this chapter almost tore my heart out...

For obvious reasons, Gudrid has a lot of plot armor and so does Karli. It makes no sense, considering last month's chapter, to have Thorfinn losing them right now, so it seems the story is rather heading towards Cordelia finding the strength to protect them, no matter what.

After all, even if Thorfinn & Gudrid were the only ones who ever told her "it was okay not to fight", they are also the ones who welcomed her without fear and who worked things through with Halfdan so that Cordelia would finally know freedom.

Cordelia is a kind soul, someone who dislikes fighting and war, but she loves Thorfinn and his family way more. She definitely won't kill, but she will probably die to protect Gudrid, Karli and his newborn brother with that strength of hers.

TBH as much as I really really absolutely love her character, I unfortunately don't think Thorfinn, Hild & co will make it in time. T_T Not with them currently being chased too. Last hope I kinda have is Ivar and Styrk finally becoming useful and saving them (instead of, y'know, triggering more conflict)...

But unfortunately again, Cordelia dying might also be the only way, narratively speaking, for characters like Einar, Ivar, Hild and Styrk to realize that staying in Vinland will cost them everything they've achieved so far (and that Thorfinn is actually not such a bad leader).

If anything though, as a dim ray of light deep within the storm that war brings, this chapter proved Thorfinn was right.

Even amongst the Lnu themselves, "desiring swords" simply translates as a way to control others: they pretend to be righteous and to act as leaders, because "violence" is the most effective way for them to keep their power over others.

Honestly I'm devastated. ;_; It's not Cordelia's first death flag, Sensei left hints here and there that she would probably sacrifice herself to save the place in which "she finally could live as herself" but, after this chapter, I've next to no hope of seeing her survive. T_T

WHY WAS THOR CRYING?! WE NEED TO KNOW!!

been thinking about worldbuilding and. oh my god guys. i know it's a throwaway joss whedon line, but even so... i think bilgesnipe might be jotun wildlife, not asgardian.

what do we know about bilgesnipe?

they have an insulting-sounding name, which at first glance inspection doesn't make much sense. normally, a "snipe" is a small game bird. this could just be a sort of joke, like a tall man nicknamed "tiny", but it could also imply that asgardians see these creatures primarily as things to shoot at. (fun fact: the word "sniper" actually comes from the amount of skill it takes to shoot snipe! bilgesnipe definitely aren't small targets, but they might still be hard to take down.)

meanwhile, "bilge" means the bottom of a ship, and the water that gathers inside it. this might imply that these creature live somewhere dirty... or that they tend to try to sink ships? (let's also remember that asgardian ships often travel the air, not the sea.)

thor summarises bilgesnipe as: "huge, scaly, big antlers". this doesn't precisely match the jotun creature we see in t1 (which i've taken to calling a dragon, for lack of other terms), but it's close. that creature is the size of a whale, with hairless, leathery blue skin and spines down its back - which could easily lead to the misconception that it was scaly. between this creature and the jotuns themselves, massive size and tough skin seem like they might be typical traits of species from jotunheim.

thor calls bilgesnipe destructive and repulsive, and uses them as an example of "uncivilised" behaviour. this reflects asgardian attitudes towards the jotun people, but it's an unusual level of animosity to hold towards an animal - especially considering that aggressive megafauna, even "exotic" ones, are often valorised by hyper-military cultures (all those european coats of arms with lions and tigers...), unless they're frequently in direct opposition.

so what is this opposition? IRL the mediaeval norse has an ambivalent relationship to wolves, because wolves preyed on their livestock. but bilgesnipes have antlers, which, at least on earth, are a herbivore trait. deer/etc can be aggressive when competing for mates or defending their young, but the danger is simple enough to avoid if you just stay out of their way. they're rarely seen as monsters for it...

but large herbivores are very often domesticated as beasts of burden - horses, donkeys, llamas, camels, elephants, and in the arctic, reindeer. and, depending on social context and the hardiness of the animals themselves, some of these beasts of burden go on to be used in warfare.

we already know that jotuns have domesticated large carnivores for military use (or maybe, originally, hunting) - specifically, they run down enemy foot-soldiers like prey on command. it's not a stretch to say there might be other species jotuns use for other military purposes.

SO. specifically. i think bilgesnipe could be giant jotun war-deer, trained to rake and crash low-flying enemy ships ("bilge"-snipe), and to stampede enemy armies ("destroy everything in their path".)

of course, the phrase (idiom?) "battling like bilgesnipe" itself could very easily refer to some natural phenomenon like rutting stags, as a metaphor for hypermasculine competitiveness, rather than anything about the animals in a real military context... but the way thor describes these creatures and the extreme negative attitude he takes to them still feel like something more to me. (and it's just more fun that way.)

(and finally, since it didn't flow above: thor assumes that midgard has, or at least knows about, bilgesnipe. and yes, this could be read as implying they're a completely everyday animal to thor, and therefore asgardian - but i would argue it could also go the other way: they're an exotic-but-familiar creature to him, like lions to a european, and he's carelessly conflating his "lesser realms", like a european thinking lions live in "the jungle".)
