#why is his backstory both overly traumatic and empty???

I’m going through looking for all the references to Illyria for semi fic related reasons but this early mention of rhys’s mother caught my eye. why would his father not know about him flying? his mother is like the only Illyrian female to not have her wings clipped and her one characteristic is how much she loved to fly, plus he let her send rhys to the war camps where every male Illyrian knows how to fly. like this makes no sense
