2. Least favorite whump trope(s)? I'm really not into whump with a whumper or pet whump. 

3. Top 3 whump scenes and why? No.6 episode 11. Oh man, this whole episode goes so hard, if you know, you know Detective Conan Chapter 251-254. I remember obsessively rereading these chapters as a 8yo kid No third place because there are 100 scenes fighting for the 3rd place in my head so I'll leave this empty

4. Top 3 characters to whump and why? Lance from Voltron. I love goofballs getting whumped. The switch between their goofy personalities to just pain, yes. Kaeya from Genshin. If anyone has good whump fanfics, please send them this way. This man is a walking whumpee Can't think of a 3rd character so I'll say my OC Birb 

5. Favorite fandom for whump (show, series, etc)? Anime/manga, animated show (Voltron, Avatar, in these kind of styles where adults look like adults) or Webtoons 

6. Do you prefer written or watchable whump? Watchable but I also enjoy written 

7. Do you also like hurt/comfort? Hell yes ! 

8. What do you think the difference between hurt/comfort and whump is? Hurt/comfort : gentle pat pat to soothe the pain Whump : stab stab to do the pain 

9. How would you explain whump to someone who’s not familiar with it? Angst but add pain, blood and injuries to it. 

10. Is there any old whump you particularly enjoy? (say, pre 2000?) It's gonna be 2000 exactly : Mulan. The moment when she realised she got hurt by Shan Yu. 

11. Why do you think you like whump? Good question it's always been there since I was really young. 

12. When did you realize you liked whump? Never, as mentioned before, it kinda was there all the time. 

13. Favorite posts with whump (gifsets, picspams, etc) ✨Art✨ 

14. Are you “out” to people in real life? My bff know that I love "angst" especially when it's bloody. I think I told them once that I found the whump community, but I'm sure I didn't say the word whump specifically 

15. How did you find the whump community? I was probably looking at "injured" or similar tags until I think I found an anime whump gifset and connected the dots when I saw the tag "whump" 

16. Any unusual mediums you like for whump (plays, music, vlogs, etc)? Stock photos. With enough imaginations, lots of things can be whumpy. It's like using a filter but with your brain. 

17. Any meta about whump you’ve been dying to share? None that I think of at the moment. 

18. Whump fic(s) you’d love to see? I'd love to read some Thoma whump from Genshin Impact. Haven't check now if there's something new with him 

19. Whump you’re looking forward to? (Maybe something teased or something you haven’t seen yet?) I am well fed with whump at the moment 👌 

20. Top 3 favorite whump fics? Oh god. I never save fics and then regret it when I want to read them again. The Purity of Sin by IcyPanther. I red it in one sitting before going to bed and then I realized it's 4am when I was finished There was a fanfic with Lance getting pneumonia while being stranded with Shiro and I can't find it ;-; A fic with my fem!Hawkle and Fenris my bff wrote me a few years ago 👌

21. Tropes you think are overdone? Whumper/Whumpee and captive whump. Let whumpees be hurt by nature in the wild far from any humans for a change. 

22. Tropes you think we could use more of? Environmental whump or whump without a whumper. 

23. Favorite sites/archives for consuming whump? Tumblr, AO3, Pinterest, Youtube 

24. Have your whump preferences changed recently? If so, why? Recently nothing has changed, but I'm always down to explore new tropes. Like I did with a tiny whumpee some times ago

Whump Challenge

I got tagged by @sasuga-whump to do this great challenge! Ill put it under a readmore bc it's quite long but i had a blast (◡‿◡)

1. Favorite whump trope(s)?

I do love anything to do with knives - stabbing, carving, knives to throats, etc. Impaling is up there too, and fractures of all kinds.

2. Least favorite whump trope(s)?

I'm not into dehumanisation in any way, or humiliation, they're squicks in fact. Anything with conditioning is also very much not for me.

3. Top 3 whump scenes and why?

Ohhhhhh good question. Recent faves are:

A scene in Resident Evil: Village where the protagonist is strung up from the ceiling by hooks stabbed through his hands. He then has to free himself by ripping the hooks out, making the wounds worse. Not much in way of consequences because of the game's slasher-horror conventions but very good still

Hard to describe without spoilers lol but in a book i just read, there is a character who's a clairvoyant and can remember things before they happen. When another character wants to hit them with a glass bottle, they experience the pain even though the hit never actually lands - the intention is enough to hurt them. It later gets used to torture them, too. It's very unique and very fun (◡‿◡)

There's a whole sequence in the webcomic Shiloh where a character loses a fight to a mantis-like monster, ends up severely injured and thrown off a cliff into a river. His colleagues find him half-dead and rush him to a hospital.

4. Top 3 characters to whump and why?

I whump my OCs 95% of the time so i don't have many fandom faves lol. I have been enjoying some horror protagonists though - Ethan Winters from Resident Evil and Murphy Pendleton from Silent Hill: Downpour both are very hurtable and get roughed up nicely in their stories.

5. Favorite fandom for whump (show, series, etc)?

Again im not much of a fandom whumper but it's usually whatever im into at the moment - recently Silent Hill

6. Do you prefer written or watchable whump?

Oooh that's hard, i think i lean every so slightly towards watchable. They both have their wonderful parts (◡‿◡)

7. Do you also like hurt/comfort?

Yes! I always prefer the hurt lol but im also very into some good comfort

8. What do you think the difference between hurt/comfort and whump is?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ To me, whump means "the hurt part of hurt/comfort" but tbh the terms are pretty interchangeable to me. H/c is a more well-known term so i find that it tends to end up being used towards more fics, even ones that only feature it briefly.

9. How would you explain whump to someone who’s not familiar with it?

Depending on how familiar with fandom terms they are, i suppose. Either "the hurt in hurt/comfort", or "like angst, but often about the physical side", or "stories where the point is for the characters to get injured". Probably add something about exploration of vulnerability, in case they want a deeper explanation.

10. Is there any old whump you particularly enjoy? (say, pre 2000?)

Hmmmmm im sure there are some Star Wars books ive read that are from the 90s and have some good whump but i genuinely don't remember lol

11. Why do you think you like whump?

Now that's the big question, isn't it lol. There's definitely catharsis there - seeing characters allowed to express their suffering and then having it validated and soothed. It's an outlet for emotion, too, especially anger which i struggle with and can channel in a safe and controlled way onto Fictional Character Stabbings lol. I also just like the aesthetics of the kind of exaggerated violence that whump tends to feature, there's a darkly melodramatic thrill to it that im really drawn to.

12. When did you realize you liked whump?

Literally as early as i remember lol. I was under 6 wishing characters in cartoons would be put into peril, i was always into it

13. Favorite posts with whump (gifsets, picspams, etc)

I do love gifsete with my whole heart, im so constantly in awe of the amazing gifmakers we have in this community bc they let us experience the best of whump from all over the world. I also like prompt posts, @injuryprompts never fails to get my creative gears turning

14. Are you “out” to people in real life?

Absolutely Not lmao and for a bunch of reasons. Mostly because whump is something quite personal to me and wouldn't want it to be misunderstood but at the same time i don't think i could properly explain it. I also don't want people to think it's a sexual thing - which again is something commonly understood in the community but probably not so much outside of it.

15. How did you find the whump community?

I was on one of my periodic searching-for-hurt/comfort-fics sprees when i was reminded of the term by the tags - i've been aware of it as a fandom thing but always forgot about it. Then i had the idea of searching it on tumblr and then it all began lol. I was so stunned to see a whole section of the website so dedicated to it and i can't believe how long i've managed without it (◡‿◡)

16. Any unusual mediums you like for whump (plays, music, vlogs, etc)?

Hmmmmm i very much like video game whump - both actual scenes and just the natural way a character gets beat up throughout the gameplay. An unusal niche of it is, i would say, point-and-click puzzle games. It feels weird because they never have an actual protagonist lol but the plot always involves being trapped, or captive, or escaping, and that just always gets my whump imagination going lol. I like imagining a character for them, scared and injured, struggling to puzzle out their freedom.

17. Any meta about whump you’ve been dying to share?

It's mostly just an observation but im utterly fascinated by the fact that so many people are into whump from very early in life. There was a poll about it going around recently and the most picked answer was "6 and younger" and it just. blows my mind. What a strangely specific thing to be born with. I would love to study this in some way but i wouldn't even know where to start.

18. Whump fic(s) you’d love to see?

There are a bunch of writers here whose fics i would love to see continued but i'm nervous to tag them bc i don't wanna pressure them lol. In general im also always on a lookout for strong platonic friendships in stories and creative magical whump, especially with a horror twist.

19. Whump you’re looking forward to? (Maybe something teased or something you haven’t seen yet?)

I've been reading Witch Hat Atelier and recently there have been theories that some visual symbolism is foreshadowing my favourite character getting hurt in an upcoming fight. I don't want to get my hopes up too much cause it's all guesswork lol but i would very much like that (◡‿◡) Similar thing with Wilde Life, a webcomic, in which the protagonist is currently held at gunpoint - in that story, however, not much injury happens at all lol so again not holding my breath.

20. Top 3 favorite whump fics?

Hhhhhh just three???? i need some kind of bookmark system for real because i can't remember half of the stuff i read lol so these aren't my Top top 3, just things i really like

In The Woods Somewhere by @knivestothroats has to be on here because it's honestly the pinnacle of my writing goals - the flow and pacing are impeccable, it escalates the stakes so smoothly that i put it down, and it's just such a brilliant self-contained story with characters that stick with you and some scenes that i still think about, years since i've read it.

@whumpapalooza 's Space Interns also have a very warm place in my heart bc i just love the characters so much and it's not often that i want whump for Every Single Member Of The Cast but here we are

and most recently i've loved this BHTB fill by @crash-bump-bring-the-whump and its lovely prose and the ability to get me hooked on brand new characters in a single work

21. Tropes you think are overdone?

Conditioned/"broken" whumpees, to me it always seems like the same few tropes and phrases cycled around in new costumes. But i will admit that i also just dislike the trope all in all lol so im not being entirely objective here. Creepy whumpers also usually come off as cheesy, i think, because they always use the same set of kinda stereotypical and, well, overused lines. It seems like it's a go-to "default" whumper for prompts/short fics but imo it's actually very difficult to do well. Just my opinion tho

22. Tropes you think we could use more of?

Hmmmmmmmmm it would be cool to see some cool horror/magic themed whump, with strange creatures and eldritch threats. I'm also always in the market for more unique character dynamics, they can keep even the most basic of tropes fresh.

Honestly just tumblr lol. And ao3 sometimes if i want fanfics since it's very easy to find things there

I've been leaning more towards horror recently as i get more into the genre! But within it im still into the same kind of whumpees i believe lol even though they're getting less gunfights and more possessions

Prompt 14: Counting

The one thing that surprises Otabek the most when it comes to Yuri, is that the younger man wavers, just a bit, before each competition. Performance anxiety, Katsuki Yuuri explains, though Otabek is more than able to work that out, and more than able to see it isn't just that. Yuri usually deals with it alone; in the seconds before he's due on the ice, but one day, Beka walks into the changing rooms, and simply pulls him into his arms, murmuring, counting helps, Yura. Count with me now, da? Forward, then backward, then forward again. After that, Yuri would go to Beka when he needs the assurance, but he doesn't because Otabek is automatically there before each competition, and together they count - even when its over the phone and miles away from each other, until Yuri feels like himself again.

WHUMP CHALLENGE! Day 3 & 4

THERE ARE SPOILERS FOR: Naruto Shippuden (anime), Teen Wolf, My Hero Academia (anime) and Danny Phantom (I like my cartoons okay)

Missed Day 3: favorite whump scenes and why

I dont know if the intention is to provide specific examples from media or just general types of scenes... but since I could never choose even 3 favorite examples, I'm gonna go with 3 types of scenes with an example.

1 - Whumpee is expecting to be hurt by someone new in their life, maybe they even have very good plausible reasons for this, but the other person subverts this expectation. (Thank you @marty-mia-matt for your post because now I know how to put it into words). An example would be when Yar (OC belonging to @umikochannart) is first discovered by his human lover whose name I've suddenly forgotten. Yar isn't exactly a whumpee but the scene still fits.

2 - A whumpee is forced to watch helplessly while a loved one is hurt or killed. Example, when Naruto is pinned to the ground by Pain and has to watch Hinata face him alone.

3 - Whumpee is forced to hurt other people. Example, Void!Stiles running Scott through with a katana.

Day 4: favorite characters to whump and why.

This changes but currently:

1) Shouto Todoroki from My Hero Academia. Because his Canon backstory makes it so damn easy. And also, I didnt like him at first and then I did. I like his character progression. I like that he has some "negative" qualities. He has anger issues, he has trouble socializing, he is aloof and somewhat cold toward other characters at first and when he does start making friends, he's doesn't take shit from others but he does it in a really calm, matter of fact kind of way. He enjoys helping people with simple things.

2) Stiles Stilinski from Teen Wolf

Because he is the sweetest, most loyal, goofy, genuinely caring Best Friend a person could ever have. He has had so much trauma in the show, its really more about the aftermath and the recovery for me but zfjdksgdk I love it all. I dont even know what I'm saying anymore.. Plus, Dylan O'brien is cute... that HAIR!

3) Danny Fenton/Danny Phantom

Because he's half-ghost and there is so much opportunity for really dark horror. Captivity, experimentation/vivisection, body horror, drama around the identity reveal, the constant sleep deprivation, his compulsion to protect people.

Yes! It's about as light as my writing gets these days (I used to be quite the fluffmeister, but lately I don't seem to respond to stories that don't involve pain somehow lol).

#whumpchallenge Day 11: Why do you think you like whump?

I have, in the past, come up with various excuses and outwardly satisfactory logic to explain away why I enjoy whump. In all reality, when it comes down to it, it’s that gut-twisting, hitched-breath, heart-all-aflutter, stomach-leaping-into-my-throat feeling i get when i see chillingly good whump. i can’t explain it. it’s not something sexual, it’s not emotional, it’s not intellectual attraction. it’s just a sudden rush, like driving fast over a hill, jumping from a swing, waking from a dream where you’re falling. it’s a rush. a wonderful, freaky rush.

#whumpchallenge day 1 - Favourite whump trope(s)

Hey everyone, I’ve been reading whump fanfics ever since, well, I’ve been reading fanfics, but I only recently learnt that there was a community for it. So I’ll be using this challenge to introduce myself to the community and hopefully make some friends along the way!

Favourite whump tropes (no particular order)

Broken bones (/bad sprains) Takes a long time to heal and is affecting the character during the entire time it takes to heal, plus they may need help with their daily tasks. Bad sprains also go into that category, so they’re much appreciated as well. Special mention for the sprained ankle, because a character being deposited on the couch with their ankle up and an ice pack on it, under strict orders not to walk and to just take it easy, man that’s the good stuff.

Hypothermia Character becomes weak and sluggish and exhausted, chances are there’s cuddling to get their body temperature back up, and even if there’s no cuddling, there’s just something about the character being bundled up in blankets to warm back up. Also, if there are signs of frostbite, there might be pain upon warming up. 

Hiding an injury/sickness There’s so much I love about his trope, it’s the need to appear strong, to avoid worrying someone, the mindset that they’re not worth being fussed over. Then, the heartbreak in the caretaker’s voice when they realise the character has been hiding an injury or an illness and they failed to notice sooner. And the best part about this trope is that it’s always either due to the fact that the character became so bad they couldn’t manage to hide their issue any longer, or the other characters noticing from the start that something is off and thus starting to worry, only to be brushed off by the character hiding their injury, until it’s too bad to ignore and they go “Damnit, I knew there was something wrong with you!”

Bed rest There’s something incredibly soft in a character being stuck in bed, a few pillows behind their back to support them, sporting a bedhead and a sleepy look on their face because they’re still feeling week from whatever caused the need for bed rest, and if there’s another character crawling in bed with them to keep them company and maybe cuddle with them, I might just die on the spot

Getting unusually clingy or docile Just... what it says up there, (especially but not only) characters who are usually not very physically affectionate becoming all cuddly and touch starved when sick or hurt or just overly exhausted. Alternatively, characters who are always physically affectionate feeling bad and being allowed to be clingy with a person who doesn’t usually allow it as an exception because they know they’re not feeling well. 

Not realising they’re injured Legs suddenly giving out from blood loss, pain hitting unexpectedly, and hitting hard so they’re left gasping for breath, or only realising they’re hurt when another character points it out. 

Protective friends Just, god, protective friends when the character is injured give me a reason to live. The chara’s friends moving in front of them to shield them from further harm, cradling them against their chest very, very gently, fussing hard during the healing process, and perhaps being wary and overprotective even after the character has healed. 

Pressing their face into someone’s chest/neck Either from pain, exhaustion, or emotions, while being held gently by the other person. Or just cuddling due to whump in general, I’m especially fond of platonic cuddling in these situations, but any kind of cuddling works. 

Cuddle pile as a comfort Friends huddling together on the bed or in a nest of blankets on the floor around the whumped character to make them feel safe and to comfort them. As I said, I’m into cuddling. 

Man, I sure like lots of whump tropes, but those are just some of my favourites, I’m sure there are more!

1. Favorite whump trope(s)?

There are a lot of tropes I love.  In general I’m more into physical whump than emotional, although I love it when physical whump leads to emotional issues.  

I love hospitals, a character being rushed to the ER, their discomfort and frustration at being trapped in a hospital for weeks as they slowly heal.  I’ve used amputation a lot; I love the combination of major pain during the injury itself and the following long road to recovery and adjusting to life after this major change to their bodies.

I’m really into old-fashioned, especially medieval, whump.  Torturers in history were more creative with causing pain than I ever will be!  I’m especially fond of the rack.

And I will always be happier with a whump scene if the victim is bound, gagged, or - preferably - both.

Day 2: Broken Bone

I'm attempting @yuckwhump 's daily whump challenge! starting with something i had on my phone for a while now but could never bring myself to finish lol

Footsteps carried in a dull echo between the oppressive walls of the basement corridor.

Claine froze. The footsteps continued.

He holstered his gun and curled his fingers into a sigil, mouthing the first syllables of a spell. He held it, vibrating between his hands, as the hollow rhythm of the echo changed. Closing in.

Ahead? No, left, then behind him. Circling. Definitely not Heart then, or any of the other detectives. They treaded softer, and knew where he was, thanks to the location spell he was holding in the back of his mind.

Now straight behind him. Louder. The darkness twitched, something moving through it. Then it took shape.

Claine released the spell in a flash of white hot light. The figure yelled and crumpled like a paper doll, something clattered on the floor. The man cursed, grabbing for his weapon, but an invisible weight held him down, immobilized.

Footsteps still carried in a dull echo between the oppressive walls.

Claine turned too late. Another dark figure swung at him, too fast to counter. Claine ducked on instinct. The figure's fist whipped above his head, but he didn't get the time to celebrate. The second blow, meant to hit him in the chest, connected with his face instead. The pain blinded him for a split second and then he was on the floor. Frantically, he blinked away the haze, but what he was greeted with was a barrel of a rifle aimed square between his eyes.

"Hands where I can see them," said the voice in the dark. "Get up and walk."

"Do you want me to free your friend?" Claine asked, slowly pushing himself up. His head reeled with the pulsating pain of something broken. He could taste the blood pouring from his nose.

"No. You cast a single spell and I shoot you. Move."

"Right."

They led him down to the very end of the concrete corridors, where another silhouette was guarding a door. Faint light filtered out from underneath it and when it swung open, Claine winced against what seemed like sunlight after the pitch black of the basement.

The room was large, littered with boxes and barrels, with huge pipes running along the walls and up to line the low ceiling. Two faces turned to the opening door, from two vastly different positions.

On the wet concrete floor knelt detective Tamara Heart, held down by two men in black combat gear. Blood caked over her split lips and her nose was clearly broken, but so were the noses of both of the men who held her.

The other woman in the room, stood over Heart with a pistol in her hand, was tall and blonde, curly-haired, dressed in bright, summery clothes that looked wildly out of place in the dim basement. The notorious Bright Blade Allison. She looked at Claine, then at Heart and then rolled her eyes theatrically.

"Oh, Tamara, you said you were alone" she sighed.

"God damnit, Claine, you were supposed to stay with the wizard! " Heart snapped at the same time. Claine opened his mouth, but then his brain clicked.

"I, uh," he stumbled over his words. "I- I lost him. I don't know where he went, it's- we got separated."

"There's a wizard, too!" Allison clapped her hands, as best as she could with a pistol. "Oh, this is turning into a party. Put those rifles away, lads, I don't want him dead."

Metal clattered behind Claine's back as the men obeyed.

"Don't want him moving, though, so if you don't mind."

Something struck the back of Claine's knees and he went down onto the concrete. Two pairs of hands hauled him up and pinned him between them, arms spread wide and wrenched backwards. He winced, but he could feel Heart's eyes on him, so he grit his teeth and said:

"You flatter me." He managed to keep most of the shake out of his voice. "Only one of these guys would have been perfectly enough."

Allison laughed. "He's also a gobby one! Tamara, you pick them so well. Anyway, whereabouts is that wizard you talked about? He around?"

"You missed the part where we lost him?" Heart answered. "He's probably gone by now, calling for backup."

That hint Claine understood right away. The men holding him were focused on keeping him down. Allison was focused on Heart. He couldn't put his hands together for the communication spell, but he still had his tracker held in the back of his mind. No incantation, barely a sigil. Easy to keep from non-magic people. He glanced up at the grunts. Both were looking to Allison as she knelt to face Heart.

He flicked his fingers and felt power pour out of him like an exhale of breath. The tracking spell grew, reaching out.

And then Allison turned to face him.

"Oh," she said. She looked to Heart, then back to Claine, and then up at the men who held him. "This party's just full of liars today."

Claine's stomach dropped. How could she know? Could she sense it? Was she...

"You think you know all about me, huh?" Allison said, levelling her face with Claine's, too close for comfort. "You didn't figure I had power? Huh, wizard?"

Claine swallowed. "The term's 'arcane practitioner' ," he said through clenched teeth. He heard Heart sigh loudly.

"Whatever." Allison smiled. "I don't want you practicioning anything in the current moment." She glanced up at the grunts. "If you don't mind."

The grip on Claine's arm shifted. Then, with one horrifyingly smooth strike, the grunt snapped his forearm into a sickening angle.

The grinding crunch of breaking bone drowned in the sound of Claine's scream. He gasped, shock seizing his lungs as his body fought desperately not to register the pain. But there was no escaping it. The grunt shifted his hold again and the bone twisted, tearing the tissue around it and Claine's vision went dark. He couldn't think for the pain, he couldn't stop the quiet, ragged whimpers escaping his throat with every shallow breath.

"Now we can talk," said Allison lightly. She grabbed Claine's chin and yanked his face up to hers. "Is anyone else coming to our party?"

Behind her, Heart thrashed in the grunts' hold. "You must be out of your mind if you think I only brought one person to face you," she spat. "You've got ten minutes maximum before they find you."

"Ten minutes, huh?" Allison crooked her head. Her nails dug into Claine's skin but he barely felt it. Every small movement sent new waves of agony surging through his body, breaking his breath into stuttering gasps. He clenched his teeth, trying desperately to focus on Allison's almost amused face in front of him.

She said: "We can do a lot in ten minutes."

Then she grabbed Claine's arm and squeezed hard, bone shifting under her grip. The empty room echoed the first of many long, agonized screams.

Prompt 15: Back-Alley Medicine

Its always been easy to get hold of -ehem - frowned upon - substance in skating. Hell, the Federation will even give it to you, wrapped in pretty food parcels, if they think you need it. Even if they don't. Yuri, and Victor, have learned to avoid food that isn't given to them by Lilia and Yakov - directly. Even the painkillers could be laced; they trade between themselves, but never, never with anyone else. Victor is in his final year (29 and still skating, it feels insane) and Yuri is seventeen; struggling with muscle pains, his body still growing in ways he hates. Victor counts out Yuri's pills, and they've an agreement; he can only have as much as he's given, no more, no less, because he knows that Victor won't short change him if he needs them, but he won't put him at risk, either.

Yuri counts out Victor's, and Victor knows that Yuri will cause all holy hell if Victor even tried to get them from anywhere else. Some nights, though, when Yuri is at Victor's and everything hurts for both of them, the only cure is each other's company, and a good (or terrible) tv show. Sometimes that's the only back-alley medicine they need.

2. Least favorite whump trope(s)?

It's not exactly a trope, but I really can't handle heavy gore. Like body horror, mutilation, and stuff. I've read some, but it rubs me the wrong way, so I tend to avoid it. I'm fine with blood and injuries, just nothing too terrible or descriptive
