have you ever wanted to have your very own whumpee locked away in a basement to horribly mistreat? silly little things like "legal" or "moral" issues got in the way of fulfilling that desire? why not try it in a videogame instead!

i've had this project in the works for a while, but it's slowly entering the (very) early alpha stages! i would like to present an as of yet untitled "whump game". much like in those "virtual pet" style games that used to be popular a ~decade ago, you'll have to take care of your captive and check in on him every now and again. the video is just an early version of the customization screen - there's a lot more to come! some of the features i'm currently working on:

more customization options!

a system of rewards/punishments.

a diary for your whumpee.

ways to make money and buying clothes, accessories, etc.

a health and hunger system - try to keep your whumpee alive.

a story. yes, this will be more than just a tamagotchi clone with torture!!

a playable multiplatform build (probably on itch.io).

I feel like whumping bloopers would be hilarious for some reason. (1am thoughts bare with them.)

Case and point, Whumper is about to crack a whip but let's go and the thing flys across the room breaking several objects in the process. Caretaker rushing into the room to save Whumpee but skids too far across the floor and loses balance. Whumpee trying to keep a straight face while Whumper belittles them only to burst out laughing mid take. Ect, ect.

okay i say this as a) a Certified Angst Writer and b) an outsider to the dsmp community but--

from where I stand, I think the dsmp storytellers (...and for that matter, our own Mr. Scott Smajor of Empires the SMP) need to discover that angst is far more powerful when it's offset by happiness.

And, as I said: I'm saying this as an outsider, so I'm aware I'm only seeing the Big Mountain Moments of the story, and I'm sure there's inter-character fun stuff in there too. But you can only take everything away from a character so many times before it stops meaning anything. Sometimes you need to give them a break. A respite. A short, happiness/fluff/joy-filled arc where the world is kind for a while... otherwise you don't have angst, you just have whump. Angst implies that you're yearning for something better because you know it's possible. Whump is just... getting bashed into a wall over and over again with no possibility of escape or better times.

So I feel really bad for the dsmp characters like Tommy, who seem to just hit one wall after another with the only happy times in between being stuff that's either not actually part of the story (bloopers, offhand comments, goofing off between story bits) or it doesn't contribute to the character/plot at all. It ends up being meaningless, not because it's bad content, but because it doesn't mean anything to the characters in the long run.

Or take Scott's Empires "Elsa arc" right now. When was the last time something good happened to Mr. Anime Protagonist (affectionate)? Even defeating Xornoth wasn't really a good moment for him, as it was still a loss of the brother-that-might-have-been. As far as I can remember, the last good thing that happened was... maybe the Rivendell festival? Even grimdark stories like The Witcher know to give characters stretches of rest before slamming them with The World Is Ending And It's Your Fault bricks again. #GiveScottHappiness2k21 lol

Anyway. Rant over I guess. This is something a lot of inexperienced writers fall into, because we like to make these wonderful characters suffer. It's cathartic. But hit them with blow after blow after blow and eventually your audience is going to spiral into emotional exhaustion and your dramatic "oh my gosh how horrible!" moments are just going to be another bump in your plateau of pain.

so my quiet ambition is to finish writing kintsugi for nanowrimo and then get it published and it's very funny to think what this blog would become in that scenario. it would be like super hidden extra content that would reveal to anyone in the know that the story started as a whump series. the book would have deleted scenes. like bloopers for a movie except it's all torture. who would even know. i need to get famous purely for that to become true.

2. What made you start the show?

In typical fashion, it was a gifset. To be more exact, it was the scene right after the corn silo where they form a wall around Marjan and I was intrigued. Ironically the next day my mom mentioned a new Rob Lowe show she thought I would like, so it's at least partially her fault.

9. Favorite cast member?

On a complete simp level, Natacha. I cannot get over how gorgeous she is. But on other levels, either Brain or Rafa. They both do so much work for causes they care about and I really love to hear their takes.

17. Wishes for next season?

More storylines and backstories for Marjan, Paul, Mateo, and Nancy.

22. Character you used to like but now hate?

I wouldn't say hate, but Owen Strand and I have been on a bit of a roller coaster. I used to love him, hated him in season 2 for a bit, and while I don't hate him anymore and my view of him changed again by the second half of s3, I still don't love him as much as I did in the beginning.

23. Character you use to hate but now like?

I too hated Judd for the first 20 minutes he was on our screens, but that changed significantly. And I never hated her, but I don't think I ever expected to like Tommy Vega as much as I do.

42. Favorite Judd/Grace moment?

I think the one after they find out about Wyatt because it really showed how much they love each other and know each other. There's something beautiful about going to your partner and saying "I know what I'm feeling doesn't make sense but that doesn't change the fact that I am feeling it" and for them to accept that and not try to tell you you're wrong, to let you feel what you are feeling.

How’d you find this show and the fandom? How long have you been here?  I watched it when I was a little kid, and it was my very favorite then. (I’m a year younger than the show.) About 5 years ago, I figured out it was on Netflix (boo that it’s gone now!) and realized I still absolutely loved the show. I poked my head into fandom, saw a few people, was too shy to interact much, and drifted away again. But then I noticed a few people writing my pairing, so, I’m back.

What made you stick around? I just love Johnny and Roy so much, and everyone I’ve met in fandom has been lovely!

Who’s your favorite character? Roy DeSoto. :D Don’t worry, I love Johnny to the ends of the earth, but Roy is my guy.

Are you a shipping kind of person? If yes, what are your favorite ships? Absolutely! I’m happy to read and write gen stories, but shipping is where my heart is. Johnny/Roy (and also Johnny/Roy/Joanne) is my ship, though I certainly have considered others. Different combos of Dixie, Kel, and Joe have a lot of material to work with.

Favorite moment/scene/quote? Yes, you can pick more than one. Aaaah! I could be here all day. There’s a tiny moment in Camera Bug that I’ve mentioned before, when Johnny accidentally smacks Roy with his camera, then immediately reaches out and touches Roy’s head in apology. I think it’s actually a blooper that stayed in, which makes it even sweeter to me, because it shows off Randy and Kevin’s wonderful friendship.

Do you have a favorite episode? Feel free to pick one per season if you can’t decide. Uh. There are a lot of them, but I’ll stick to The Promotion for right now. I just absolutely love the way Roy is torn between doing what he thinks is right for his family, and what he truly wants to do for himself. And on the other side of things, Johnny is trying so hard to do what he thinks is best for Roy, which is encouraging him to go for it, even though the idea of Roy leaving is completely gutting him. And then, Roy choosing to stay for Johnny (and himself) is just...ugh. Beautiful.

Most underrated character, either among the fandom or one the writers never utilized to their full potential? I do think he’s gaining traction in the fandom, but definitely Morton. As I rewatch the show I like him more and more all the time. They did a lot of really good things with him, but also some not so good things, and yes, it would have been nice if he’d had more good storylines.  And then also for myself, I hadn’t realized how much I love Captain Stanley. In a cast full of great voices, his is my very favorite. And mmm, the man is sexy when he’s in command of a scene!

One thing you’d have liked to see more (or less) of in the show? I would have liked if they’d spent more time showing us Roy and Johnny treating each other when they got hurt. They always tend to cut away to the hospital when it’s serious. Now, Roy hovering in the treatment room in Nuisance was lovely, but that was the exception, not the rule. From all of the ‘Johnny whump’ fic I’ve seen posted, I’d guess the fandom would have also liked more time spent on those moments. As far as less - less sirens. Oh, boy. Way less time spent on traveling to the scene with those sirens.

Do you have a fanwork recommendation for us? Fic, art, video, whatever? Everything by guardy and hitchcock_winter. If you're up for some gen angst, I adore Requiem by dee_ayy on AO3.

Any fanworks you’d like to see? I'd like to see the ones I've started finished. :D. Just, more Johnny/Roy in general. And some more Roy whump. Because Johnny can't have it all, can he?

Any favorite headcanons you’d like to tell us about? Johnny bought that damn house because he wanted Roy to have it. He just, you know, got caught up in things and went about it a little screwy.

petty bitches only club this one is a super short “blooper/crack treated seriously” bad ending scene for a story i was working on with a friend. here’s the first couple lines:

the group stood in silence, gazing at the carnage they never would have believed could have come from the person before them.

a whisper cut through the sickening tranquility. "what happened to you?" no one was even sure who uttered the question on everyone's mind.

essentially, one of the protagonists goes apeshit against everyone and it’s like 99% serious except for one line during their grandiose speech that makes their reasoning petty as all hell. it involves baking.

He was by himself with only the sound of his own shallow breathing and the deafening white noise of silence, crushing and lifeless—

There's something I'd like to know about the Whump community. I understand Whumpers like to see their fave characters hurt but does that also goes to the actual actor playing the character? I mean, I've seen people rejoicing about Colin breaking his legs of whatever. I can understand liking violence in fiction but I think it's gross to actually take that enjoyment to real life. I know Colin ofter gets hurt and I don't think that's something we should enjoy or find satisfying. What's your POV?

Well. I don’t really know how many whumpers there are out there who enjoy real life whump. I do know there are some out there, but I think that’s definitely one of the more “rare” forms of whump, and the posts I’ve seen about it are mostly whumpers posting about their own injuries. And, I mean, you know, if someone gets a kick out of their own pain, that’s fine by me ;)

...and that’s generally the spirit my own “real life whump” posts about Colin’s injuries or mishaps tend to be in. Colin has a habit of, um, poking fun at his own clumsiness and tendency to hurt himself. And ISTG, no one finds that blooper where Robert Carlyle jumped on his nuts as funny as Colin himself does. And no one finds Colin’s endless amusement over that blooper funnier than I do. So yes, I document every time he mentions it, because it amuses me :D But that’s less about the injury and more about Colin’s own reaction to it.

There was one post I made, right after the musical episode aired, that I felt a little uncomfortable about. We all know Colin broke his foot filming that episode, and there’s a moment during the song when you can see very REAL pain on Colin’s face. The editors apparently didn’t notice it when they were putting the episode together, so it made it into the final aired episode. It kinda put me in a conundrum, because it was real life pain, yes, but in a canon scene of Killian Jones. I didn’t know if I should document it or not, and I was really pretty worried about offending people or overstepping a line, you know?

Then, about two weeks later, there was a convention and Colin himself went and announced that exact moment to everyone there, and essentially said “Yeah, it’s right there in the episode, so if you can find it, you can see me in extreme pain, haha, how fun" and that’s why I fucking love this man XD

So, yeah. I don’t really worry about that anymore :P I honestly don’t think anyone enjoys Colin’s injuries as much as Colin himself does. Someday, he’s gonna show up in my Ask box, complaining that I don’t have enough content. “ADD MORE GIFS OF THAT TIME BOBBY JUMPED ON MY NUTS, PLZ”

As for me personally, well, I shy away from visual real life whump. I really don’t enjoy that at all. I do like real life survival stories and historical whump (like medieval torture devices and what-not). But for the most part, my “enjoyment” of real life whump is usually less about enjoying the whump itself and more about getting inspiration and factual information to enrich the stories I write :) I also think that RPF or fantasies about real people getting whumped are okay, too. I mean, even though they’re real, they’re being used like a fictional character, you know? I do think it’s a bit gauche to publicly share them, though - and that goes for even the non-whumpy RPFs.
