Crazy, but true. For further evidence check this site out for case studies on contractor clearances. 2 of my personal favorites:

-Individual admits he masturbated in a high security computer facility while he himself was already a cleared IT Professional.

-Individual who admits to downloading child porn in high school, and continued to do so into his first years of college. Admitted he kept the images for a time after downloading had ceased. He admitted this to his employer, girlfriend, and investigating agent. He was granted clearance.

Mind you, there is a large sum of money spent for clearance investigations. Agents are flown out on the gov't (taxpayer) dime to investigate the individual requesting clearance. Many of these jobs that require a clearance, pay nicely. A good 80% of them start at 55-60k a year. An IT contractor? Pfft, 80k to start, easy.

When perusing the site, you will notice they mainly care about debt and DUI's. The US Government does not like loose lips, or the potential for you to sell information because of your financial situation.
