I stumbled upon this Japanese BL yesterday, which is an adaptation of its manga counterpart. It's very slice of life and fluffy, leans into the school setting that is typical with coming of age stories. Takara just epitomises the 'cool boy' senpai protagonist (complete with orange hair which is a trope in itself), who is handsome, unapproachable and aloof at first, but reliable and kind once you peel back the layers. I have to say that the actor they've chosen is impeccable casting. He just exudes the essence of characters like this I've personally read.

8 episodes have been released out of a total of 11. If you're not familiar with Japanese BL or slice of life as a genre, this show may feel slow and uneventful in terms of plot and pace, but that's generally it's charm. So far I'm finding this quite endearing. Each episode is only 30 minutes long so very digestible.

Time for my first review omg, took a long time but I have been waiting for inspiration to hit me and also I have been busy with things and thoughts. I read this one before sleeping last night and I kept thinking of it today because it was so cute! So here is the review and I tried to not spoil many details so no worries!

Title: Hiyo-chan Koi wo Suru?

Author: Sakura, Rico

Summary: From Good Girls Scan BL: Yoh and Komiya, two boys with brother complexes, start pretending to date. Even though it started out as a plan to make their brothers realize their importance, before they knew it, they started enjoying "fake dating"… To top things off, Komiya, who starts to find Yoh's pureness irresistibly cute, couldn't help but kiss him?? "Should I teach you a kiss that'll make you melt?" "I don't mind anything if it's you, Senpai??"

What I liked about it: omg where to begin, first of all it was just so adorable, the context of the main couple gives a first love vibe which I love in bl mangas. The doubts, hesitations, confessions, it has all of those elements for sure. The high school setting also gave it a more realistic vibe of first love feelings 💗.

The art was so cute too and the character design was appropriate to portray the difference of personalities of the main couple. The smut scenes also were quite wholesome, consensual and nothing too over the top, kinda playful.

What I didn't like: something that is common with bl mangas like this: it was short, I needed more of their cuteness!!!. But even though it was short it didn't feel too rushed and the progression of their relationship was understandable. And I'm happy we got to see them when they become adults too.

Also there is a special chapter hidden in the manga "Ichinose-kun wa Itsumo Iinari" of the same author (I haven't read that one yet though, only the special chapter). It is chapter 4.5, about them going on vacation together, it was cute too and a sweet gesture from the author to add it somewhere.

That's it, if you do end up reading it, beware of cuteness overdose hehe. And well, let me know your recommendations for other bl mangas to review if you like!

Romance Anime Starter List

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m sick and tired of seeing “Top ___ Best Anime of All Time” lists that are nothing but shounen. So, with "My Happy Marriage" getting a little attention from the anime community, I wanted to put together a list of some romance anime that I consider good “starters” for the genre. Because if I were just now becoming an anime fan, I’d think all there was to offer was shounen action series.

And by “starters” I mean basic stuff that’s not too…out there, and actually involves the characters getting together instead of just harems or using romance as a side plot (sorry Ouran High School Host Club and My Next Life as a Villainess). 

So if you’re new to anime and want stuff that’s not just guys beating the shit out of each other (which is also fun, don’t get me wrong), here are some basics.

Taisho Maiden Fairy Tale- When the pessimistic Tamahiko Shima loses all function in his right arm, his family sends him away to live in the mountains with the cheerful, hard working Yuzuki Tachibana…who was purchased by the Shima family to pay off her family’s debts and basically act as a caretaker/future bride for Tamahiko so they’d never have to deal with him again. It’s a more cheerful version of My Happy Marriage (without the supernatural stuff), except in this one, the guy is the one who has massive self-esteem issues and an abusive family. There are still very serious themes, but ultimately it’s not meant to make you cry every episode. I swear it’s so good, but nobody watched it!

Horimiya- A slice of life in which pretty and popular high school queen bee Hori, finds out her quiet, unassuming classmate Miyamura is hiding piercings and tattoos that could get him expelled. The two gradually find out more about each other and get together in the most realistic way I’ve seen depicted in an anime. It’s also fucking hysterical and genuinely emotional.

Recovery of an MMO Junkie- Another slice of life that focuses on two adults who meet in an MMO game without realizing they also know each other in real life. I don’t want to say much more than that. It’s adorable, and the main character is so relatable it hurts.

Love with Yamada-kun at Level 999- Speaking of MMOs, this is a newer series about Akane Kinoshita, a college first year who’s reeling from a bad break up. In an attempt to get back at her ex, she winds up meeting Akito Yamada, a popular gamer who happens to be in her guild in the MMO they both play at an IRL meetup. The two go from acquaintances to something more as they keep running into each other. Even more relatable main characters and just wholesome relationships all around.

Snow White With The Red Hair- A fantasy in which an apothecary named Shirayuki (meaning, you guessed it, “snow white”) runs away from her home in order to escape becoming the concubine of her town’s prince. While fleeing, she is rescued by Zen, the prince of a neighboring country, and she ends up becoming an herbalist to repay him. It's super cute with some genuinely swoon worthy moments and a couple that just works so well together. I have a habit of comparing this to Akatsuki no Yona, even though the two aren’t really that alike. This is more romance driven while Akatsuki no Yona is more of a serious historical fantasy with romance elements (Yona manga is amazing, but the anime barely scratches the surface, so that’s why I didn’t include it).

Sasaki to Miyano- When the shy, easily flustered Miyano meets Sasaki, a cool “delinquent” upperclassmen, the two end up bonding over manga…specifically BL manga. That’s right, Miyano is a fudanshi, but due to his small stature and somewhat feminine appearance, he’s constantly trying to convince others that he’s not interested in having his own love story where he’d be reduced to a stereotypical doe-eyed uke. But as Sasaki and Miyano spend more time together, they realize that what they have is more than friendship, and they have to come to terms with their own perception of gay relationships. This is my favorite romance of all time. It’s a slow burn, but boy is it worth it. Their relationship is so natural and realistic, just like Horimiya. Just two people hanging out and bonding over things the way people do in real life!

Given: The story of some boys in a band with trauma. Enough said. It's great. Go watch it.

Bloom Into You- Yuu Koito is a high school girl who’s been waiting her whole life for her own perfect romance to start…but when she receives a confession, she realizes she doesn’t know how to respond when she’s just not into the guy. And then she gets another confession…this time from the cool student council president Touko Nanami, who basically jumpstarts her lesbian awakening. Very cute story about how we perceive the concept of love vs actually feeling it. Also has a canonically aro/ace side character, so that’s a win for me. Another show like this is Adachi to Shimamura (but I honestly don’t remember much about it. It just didn’t stick with me as much).

Ore Monogatari- Takeo Gouda is a tall, bulky high school first year with a sensitive heart of gold. He wants nothing more than to find his own true love, but most girls are intimidated by his enormous stature, and they end up falling for his conventionally attractive friend instead. That is, until he meets the tiny, adorable Rinko Yamato. He falls in love instantly, but he’s sure she’s interested in his best friend like everyone else, so he vows to help get them together, even though his heart is breaking. Peak himbo behavior. Pure of heart, dumb of ass.

Yuri on Ice- Yes it’s the gay figure skating anime everyone knows. And yes it’s a fucking romance, okay? I will die on this hill. The romance between Viktor and Yuri is just as important as the plot!

Kaguya-sama Love Is War- Two insanely smart high school students both have a crush on the other, but since they’re…you know…high schoolers, neither of them wants to admit it first. So they come up with increasingly convoluted plans to get the other to confess first. This will go down as one of the best of all time. It’s a hilarious yet poignant modern classic.

Fruits Basket- I’ve talked about it before and I’ll talk about it again. A romance “comedy” that slowly morphs into a drama about a girl named Tohru who finds herself living with the mysterious Sohma family after her mother dies. Little does she know, the Sohmas are the victims of a  (somewhat silly, but ultimately tragic) curse that she must fight to break. Even though I’m more into it for the family drama, the romance is still top tier and plays an important role in the story. This is my second favorite anime of all time, and it’s a classic for a reason. If anyone hasn’t watched it yet, GO WATCH IT! IT WILL RIP YOU TO SHREDS!

And now for some honorable mentions that didn't quite fit into the regular list:

Ride Your Wave- A movie about a surfer who falls in love with a firefighter……and I’m not going to say any more than that. Go into it blind. If you like stuff like Your Name, this is a good one to watch.

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun- A comedy about a high school girl who finds out the upperclassman she has a crush on is actually a shoujo manga artist, and no matter how she tries to confess to him, he just never gets it.

The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague- A slow burn slice of life that focuses on a guy with ice powers who has a crush on his coworker. That’s it. That’s the show. When I say slow, I mean SLOW. It’s perfectly cute and fluffy, but my god does it take forever to get anywhere with these two.

Skip to Loafer- A high strung, small town girl decides to go to high school in Tokyo, where she meets a variety of classmates, including the laid back Sousuke Shima. The unlikely pair become friends, and soon enough, she starts to feel something more than friendship. The only reason I didn’t include it in the main list is because they don’t get together by the end of the first season, but it’s still really cute (also canonically trans character for the win!?)

So that’s my starter list. And no, I didn’t include Toradora, even though it’s a classic. I know it’s blasphemous, but I like it more as a comedy than a romance. It kinda lost me with the ending. But anyway, maybe someone will find something they like. Or maybe you'll just want to roast me and my picks 😅

it’s been a while since i’ve shared my recent reads! so here’s what i have picked up in the past months. felt inspired cause i’m really enjoying the story i’m reading now, w/c i initially picked up as a manhwa but i’m impatient so i switched to the novel. it’s called the hunter is gonna lay low or the hunter wants to live quietly. it’s such a gem! cause it starts of pretty simple and funny then the author manages to put in the plot and well, it’s plotting. lol.

if you like systems/dungeons, cast of characters, time travel, mystery and the most delicious slow burn then this is for you. i hope this gets animated at some point cause it’s so good! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 this is the only novel on the list so it’s pretty special that the story led me to WANT to read the source.

i’m literally listing what i’ve read so yeah. and pretty much a v short reaction to it cause there is a lot (53). it’s a mix of ongoing and completed works at the time of writing and when i read it so i’ll mark that too.

1. Sweetie, Sweetie, Sweetie - this title is so misleading cause you would think it’s a modern story full of sweetness when it’s not. this deals with kingdoms/royalty, superpowers — and isekai.

2. How my Daddies Became mates (completed) - first foray into mangas because i most prefer manhwa/manhuas — i know, sacrilege. but yeah, it’s a cute story of two dad telling their kid how they met and fell in love. It’s so wholesome! a short read when you feel tired of all the toxic bl stories. 😂😂😂

3. Unintentional Love Story (completed) - pick this up! it’s so good! slice of life kind of vibe and falling in love in a small town.

4. Someone like You (completed) - this was something i started before and went back in now that it’s completed.

5. Isekai no Sata Wa shachiku shidai - i don’t really go for Mangas but this one pulled me in! I love myself some isekai plot. it’s just sad that no one has updated the translation for so long so that may put some people off in picking this up.

6. Bend over Backwards (completed) - corporate slave x international model. if you like this kind of dynamic then go ahead. Only 40 chapters plus a bunch of side stories so this kind of thing is a good choice.

7. Dinner with a Vampire - pretty obvs with the title.

9. Romance but not Romantic - omegaverse! the kind where the omega needs the alpha but initially hated him.

10. Be, Be. - omegaverse with modern royalty!

11. Smoky Nectar 1 - a short read that continues to a part 2 and it’s good ✌🏼

13. Reincarnated to Devil King Evelogia’s World - this is so uniquely unhinged that it became. endearing. No. I swear. I haven’t read anything like it. I love it tho. Maybe some people will find it over the top but it’s now one of my personal faves.

14. Bullying the Dog - an MC who didn’t get much love then he meets the ML who shows him what it’s like. it’s so somft.

15. Bittersweet Martini (completed) - i’m gonna cheat here and copy/paste the first comment on this story cause i think it perfectly describes the story: “If you're looking for a casual pleasure read with a green flag story with heavy flirting, which leads to a lot of blushing but also deals with a more serious topic towards the middle, without leaning too much into the drama, then look no further.”

16. Over the Paradise - guideverse with zombies!

17. Hero vs Villain - what happens when the supposed hero and villain become friends and fall in love? this was so nice!

18. Night of London - vampire and werewolf pairing! come on! Let’s gooooo! 🙌🏼

19. Kill my love - omegaverse and assassins!

20. Turning - Another work that i would most likely pick up the novel version cause it’s that good! Regression theme! ❣️plus the setting is they are in a kingdom where people have powers.

21. The Moon is coming to me - I have already talked bout this before and it’s one of my absolute faves! I didn’t know the Manhua was released! So i was so happy to enjoy it in that form. The translation for this is very close to the end so pick it up!

22. Cozy Obsession - transmigration where the MC knows how the story goes so he is trying his best to change the ending.

23. Summertime (completed) - one of my favorites! love it when friends become lovers and some may say the ML here is manipulative but i wanna say in a good way. lol. anyway, it’s classic, atleast from the MC’s side that you’ve known this person some time and that summertime everything has changed.

24. My way with you (completed) - gonna cheat again with this one by pasting here what someone commented: “LISTEN UP GUYS this one has everything: healthy happy relationship, supportive friends, trauma and healing, mysterious past connections, beautiful men, hot af smut, 100% consent, cutest lovey dovey couple, NO drama, NO “misunderstandings”, NO second ml, NO annoying interfering side characters. You will cry, but because it’s just so good.” 💯

25. Netkama Punch - i haven’t finished and progressed much as i would like tho i know a lot of people have this as their favorite! I will get back to it! The premise of hidden identity and online gaming is one of my fave so i will surely pick this up again.

26. Through the Years - i haven’t finished this yet but it’s a lot of people’s fave

27. Fools (completed) - disillusioned guy meets excitable puppy 🤍

28. Moonquake (completed) - a very unique concept. people on earth have powers and then some of them decided to rebel and live in the Moon. Our MC is one of the best ones on earth and is supposed to bring down the leader of the rebellion. but you all know what happens, they fall in love! AHHHHH! and i have to say the art in this too is exceptional.

29. Men’s wear store and the Royal Princess (completed) - this may be weird for some or slow / not enough action lol. i enjoyed it tho! the MC cross dresses and finds someone who loves and accepts him!

30. Ex Hot Neighbor (completed) - a story that centers around a misunderstanding! MC thinks he can’t date the neighbor cause he’s his friend’s ex. but nope!

31. Forest Sea (completed) - A good and solid fantasy story. Please give it a try! The whole birds vs snakes thing was kinda weird at first but the author made it work.

32. When you were asleep - this hasn’t been updated in a while and it’s so sad because the art is topnotch! the plot is good too, especially the dreamscapes but there’s still a lot to discover cause we wanna know what happened in the past. Why is MC even having these dreams and all that.

33. Beum & Go’s Unholy…. - still ongoing and read few chapters

34. Spring, the color of love (completed) - what a wonderful story. Oftentimes, as a reader, you have that sense of boundary with the narrator. But this one ��� you can feel and understand what the MC is thinking and going through. even tho i haven’t experienced what he did, i can totally get it. this is one of those tropes where they fall in love during their school years and some misunderstanding happens, they meet again years later and try again. something i would love to re-read even if there are parts of it that hurt. and it’s just proof that if something is meant to be, it will come back to you.

35. Keep Holding On (completed) - a short and sweet read with friends to lovers trope!

36. Wolf in the House (completed) - i am so late with this cause i feel like every list has this story as one of the best. I have to agree! it’s so good! tho i have to say i’m more attached to the second pairing. this one is a perfect mix of fantasy, action, comedy and romance. A solid recommendation!

37. Touch within the Abyss (completed) - AAAAAHHHHHH! a hitman x blind cinnamon roll! read it now! please! it’s so sweet! their love and care for each other is so pure 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹

38. 99% in love season 1 (completed) - from bestfriends to lovers in the cutest way! they start fake dating and it leads to more obvs.

39. 99% in love season 2 - their college life and this one has smut scenes!

40. Alpha Trauma ( novel ongoing ) - if you know Omega Complex then you might be aware that this is a sequel of sorts but follows the second lead’s love story if you may. Everyone loves Dohyun so i’m one of those happy readers who is happy that he gets his own story, tho the POV in this is not his but his Omega. If you like ABO and campus setting then this may be for you.

41. Soul Sealer’s school life - The MC is the soul sealer who has to do good deeds to prolong his life, then he meets the ML who has a strong spirit in him. It’s a perfect blend of fantasy, comedy and not so much romance as of the moment. The art is 💯 and i really like to see where this goes!

42. Guidance with Benefits - still ongoing and read few chapters

43. Chiguha Kuna Kisu (completed) - if you like a short read that will make you have overall good vibes then this is it. school setting, two cute boys, a fortunate miscommunication and starting a relationship. it’s so good and made me want to look for more mangas! 🤍

44. Spicy Milk Candy - yandere but in a good way. that’s all i’m gonna say.

45. Ruby Red wo Kamikudaku (completed) - i’m just gonna add the summary below but it’s truly a unique read!

Akane is an Omega who can see people's pheromones as multicolored "crystals”. During his school days, when he was lonely because of his peculiar constitution, he meets Makise, a school nurse teacher. 5 years later, they are miraculously reunited, but Makise has a secret

46. Yume Nara Doko Made Yurusaremasuka (completed) - corporate slave x young policeman. 6 chapters of sweetness!

47. Sparkling Baby (completed) - this is supposedly a sequel for the second lead, but i haven’t read the first story. I just love how the MC/ML first met and then made a mark on each other as strangers — but it wasn’t there time yet. and so they meet again later and navigate their lives together. What attracted me to this story is how the MC changed because of love. For years, he had this sense of what he think is love and looking back, maybe it didn’t work out because love isn’t supposed to be like that. What he found with the ML is real and why it feels different.

48. Ashita kimi no mono ni shite (completed) - this so wholesome! school setting and friends to lovers. quiet boy x cool guy

49. Koibitu Keiyaku chu ni suki (completed) - friends to lovers! fake dating. and well, look at them. so precious together:

50. Camboy Bunny (completed) - i think the title says it all. A delicious read!

51. Beyond the Memories - AAAAAHHHHHHH! the story in itself should be sweet and fluffy but the author manages to squeeze in the undercurrent of there is something wrong. as a reader, there is something big that we don’t know and once it comes out — all of it will be shattered. it looks like there is some sort of regression and MC doesn’t know this but the ML does. The question here is when his memories will come back and will he forgive the ML. We are not in that part yet with what’s available right now so i’m excited!

52. Private Call (completed) - another omegaverse.

The BL manga Sasaki to Miyano has just been banned for being gay and it might be terrible but my first reaction was to laugh. I remember when the anime for it came out and the anti-fujos were praising it for being wholesome unlike those "gross, fetishizing yaoi" that they think shouldn't exist. Now their wholesome series has been banned, too. I hope this would make them understand that it doesn't matter what the contents are, homophobes don't see a difference cause just being gay is bad to them.

Hi, love your analysis. Just a little context to answer your questions from someone who’s already read the manga ☺️

As to why Masaki and Hiromu didn’t do the deeds to relieve Masaki’s heat, in my opinion it’s because of Hikari. Hikari has never been alone without parents and normally s*x during heats takes at least a day or longer, I don’t think they could leave Hikari alone or with others for such long time. The baby needs at least one parent accommodating him while the other is absent. And also Ma-chan’s heat this time is coupled with a cold so I think Hiro didn’t have sex with him considering his heath.

As for why Yuki didn’t catch Masaki’s pheromones during heat, Yuki is a beta 😄 In the omegaverse, beta are the ones who aren’t affected by pheromones and they also can’t excrete/smell pheromones like alphas and omegas. That’s why Hiromu entrusted Yuki with Hikari to go see Masaki because Hiro and Matsuo are both alphas and they would be affected by Masaki’s heat but Yuki wouldn’t.

Tadaima, Okaeri Episode 2

I honestly don't think I need to add as many analyses as I put to a Live-action Japanese BL series, because I really think that this series is about how two men, from different sexual second identities, try to live together and raise their child.

I was honestly already crying midway through the episode when Hikari, hika-chan, said that his dad was the coolest, the strongest. I know I have already tweeted this, but I hope someday my child will also look up to me and gain lessons which they can bring to their own lives.

When Masaki, Ma-chan, got sick, I was so afraid. I really thought that something fatal was gonna happen. But, it's also another mechanics of Omegaverse which I have not comprehended. Okay, Ma-chan is in heat, why can't Hiro satisfy his needs then? so that at least the fever can go down. I mean, I read on Marriage of a Doting Alpha and Stray Omega, that omegas can take a pill to prevent pregnancy. Why can't Ma-chan just take one and he can have bareback sex with his husband without worrying of a second unplanned child? By the way, I saw in the intro that Hika-chan will have a sibling?? OMG so kawai!!! Also, when Yuki went upstairs with Hika-chan to check up on Ma-chan, why couldn't Yuki smell Ma-chan's pheromones? I suppose that it's due to the recent shot that Ma-chan just got.

Yo, when Hiro, Yuki, and Mochizuki tried to cook something, that was so funny! I quite frankly wanted to write about how "boys never grow up, they just become old" trope because of the scene. But I quite don't know the omegaverse yet to say that what happened in the noodle-making scene during Ma-chan's ill period was a manifestation of said trope. In Marriage of a Doting Alpha and Stray Omega, Goro was not some helpless buffoon like many straight cis-men are, he was really caring to Ichi. In Kamisama Nanka Shinjinai Bokura no Eden, Shikito was really caring and did a lot of things just to accommodate Nishio. So, again, I don't know how straight cis-men of our world are translated to the omegaverse. Or maybe, the two examples I listed are just the exceptions? I mean I have only read the two mangas about omegaverse so yea.

I cried even harder when Hika-chan cried after seeing his dada was sick. I understand so much the feelings of not seeing your parents become ill or dead, I had a weird phase in my life when I was that afraid of death and separation.

I finished reading Jujutsu Kaisen and I felt like writing a long post about my feelings towards the entire work.

This experience has been pretty fast and intense for me, since I started watching jjk on summer 2023.

Yup, that was when hidden inventory launched and my socials were invaded with that Gojo boy and his boyfriend.

And I was like "hmm, they look like my type of ship".

And damn, they were.

They arrived to my life in a very bad time, but even so, they became the reason I felt happy to draw BL romance again.

And at some point I also remembered why I began to draw in first place.

And after watching hidden inventory, I was absolutely captivated by the narrative and the character building so, I ran to start the series from S1.

I wasn't sure if the main show would like me as much as hidden inventory did, but the truth is that I loved Yuuji since the very beginning.

His kind heart shows up since the hospital scene with his grandpa and I already was like:

"I'M GOING TO THE END WITH THIS SHIT"

I loved how interesting was every new character, and the plot never failed to impress me in some way.

And then I bought all the manga volumes available at that time, and I spent my summer holidays reading all the Shibuya incident.

(my friends just heard me yelling every 5 min.)

I admit that Shibuya incident was hard to read, and at that point, I suffered thinking everyone would die at the end. 🥺

But even so, I still wanted to see what would happen with Gojo.

And once again I wasn't sure the culling games were interesting enough for me but dude, Hakari and Kirara, Higuruma, the Choso and Yuki development, Maki's glow up, Takaba vs Kenjaku... and Yuuji & Megumi being so dummy together & trying their best were such a GOOD scenes for me…

And OF COURSE, I was amazed by how handsome and charming Gojo appeared in his comeback.

So lively and full of energy🥹

And then the battle with Sukuna arrived and it was really really bad for my poor heart, but damn, Gojo was still handsome until the end, even in his death panel.

I heard about the death by leaks, unfortunately, and I thought I would be really really sad when reading it.

But the reunion in the afterlife showing how dear Geto was to Gojo was so warm, that I just accepted it.

Gojo chose south, and I couldn't even get mad at Gege for that.

From that point in advance, I was really curious on how Gege would write the end of the manga.

Overall, I was worried about the kids but it turned out pretty well for all of them and I'm really grateful for that 😭

In the end, Yuuji's kindness reached even to the evil Sukuna in his defeat, and I couldn't think about a more wholesome ending for jujutsu kaisen.

I think it fits perfectly with the beginning and all the introspective and philosophical life topics shown in the manga.
