Coconut oil + honey

Good in recipes. Supposed to be great as a pre-shampoo treatment to lock in moisture for curly hair. And since I’m running heat all the time, and I’m wholesale doing everything I can for good curls, I tried it. I was skeptical AF about the honey because it’s sugar. People use sugar in wax to rip hair OUT. And I want mine to stay where it IS (the hair on my head, anyway). But honey’s an emollient (locks in moisture), and hundreds and thousands of other people have done this so it must be great.

It was every bit as awful to apply as I thought. My hands were getting stuck to my hair even though the mixture was heated. And don’t even talk to me about cleaning up. At least I had the foresight to drape an old towel around my shoulders first. My bathroom sink is going to need an old priest and a young priest.

It’s still on my hair, marinating under heat cap. I dread washing it out. The whole point of the exercise is that doing this before shampooing keeps the shampoo from stripping out as much of the hair’s natural oil. I’m pretty sure I won’t have any hair to worry about the dryness of when this is all over.

Never. Again.

The coconut oil, yes. Maybe even an avocado sometime because they’re oily and fatty and not sugary.

Tips for Bangkok

Sawadee ka! Bangkok/ Grungthep (BKK) is like a second home to me, and I thought I share some tips from my experiences!

1. Get connected!

I would recommend getting a SIM card since it will probably be cheaper, and less troublesome than a wifi device. It is not essential to get from Changi Recommends because you can get a better deal from Don Meaung/ Suvarnabhumi Airports, and there will be personnel there to help you set-up. You can expect to pay ~199B-299B for a 1.5GB-2.5GB allowance over 7 days. Providers include AIS, Dtac, and True. Will recommend AIS since it offers the most data for the same price (299B).

*I provided a range of prices because it might differ slightly based on where you get from. For example, I got my AIS card for 199B/2GB from Suvarnabhumi, and I know the Don Meaung side shops (near to the taxi stand) sell cheaper sim cards as well.

2. Transport Options

(i) To/Fro airport

If you land in Suvarnabhumi, you will have the option to take the Airport Rail Link, which brings you to Pratunam in 6-7 stops (cost: ~40B).

For less hassle and if your hotel is not near Phaya Thai/ Ratchaprarop stations, you  can choose to take a taxi and it will cost 300-350B (including tolls of 75B). Remember to go by meter, and choose to go by highway to avoid the jams! Don Meaung should be about the same price.

I would not recommend taking Grab/Uber as they are priced at a fixed rate - ~425B.

(ii) Within the city

I would recommend checking Uber/Grab for offers because when i was there, both providers were running a 50B discount on rides taken from 10am - 3pm. This resulted in a ~32B ride (35 min) from Pratunam to Chatuchak (see Uber receipt above).

Even without the discounts, I would recommend taking for the following benefits, (i) no need to haggle on price, and (ii) no issue on communicating on location since everything is on the GPS. However, there are also downsides, (i) waits can go up to 15min because of the jam in BKK and (ii) you need to be very clear where the pick up is at (we usually choose hotel lobbies), because there might be a language barrier should the driver call you to confirm.

If you can’t get an Uber/Grab, the next best bet is definitely a taxi since they are very reasonably priced, sometimes even cheaper than the train if you are in a big group!

During peak hours though, you might be better off taking the BTS, and i did a map highlighting the main areas that i usually visit. Did not include attractions like Wat Pho, Grand Palace but they are all situated along the Chao Phraya River. You can read more here.

Tuk Tuks are my least favorite because they tend to be very dangerous, and an absolute tourist trap! They always over-charge (100B for a short ride??) but can probably just take once for the experience.

3. Where to stay?

For the shopaholics, I would recommend staying at the Pratunam area (~$25-$40/pax/night). It will be convenient to visit Pratunam market (wholesale market in the morning), Platinum malls, some night markets (including the new NEON market) and Amari Watergate to tailor clothes. 

I would recommend the following hotels: Hotel Vista Express (right within Pratunam market), Lemontea hotel (abit further in but comfortable, clean and great service), as well as Centara Watergate Pavilion (more high-end, picture of chilling area below). 

The downside to staying in Pratunam is the pretty long walk (~10-15min) to the nearest BTS (Siam) so you might end up taking taxis everywhere. An alternative is to stay in the Siam Square area but I found it pretty challenging to find a hotel within my budget. If you have the budget (~$70/pax/night), might want to consider Novotel Siam Square (heard great reviews). 

If you are not big on shopping, I suggest staying beside any BTS to go place to place more conveniently. For big groups (6 pax), I found this pretty nice Airbnb near Phloen Chit (5 min walk). What I like about it is there are 3 toilets for 3 rooms, near a pretty central BTS and reasonably priced (~$45/pax/night). For new Airbnb users, can use my link to get $25 off your 1st booking (min spend: $100). 

For people keen on sightseeing, I would recommend staying at Chong Nonsi area - 2 stops away from Sapan Taksin to take the boat rides to Wat Pho, Grand Palace, Chinatown etc. There are also great restaurants there like LEK seafood and Feaung Nara.  E brought me to this sake bar that I really liked as well. Would recommend staying at the Trinity Silom Hotel.

4. Where to go?

See above for the map but wanted to highlight some not-so-known areas. 

For shopping: I usually recommend friends to Union Mall (Phahon Yothin MRT), 2 stops away from Chatuchak (JJ) market. It is a good place to go after JJ when it gets too hot because they have large variety of food, clothes (might be nicer than Platinum?) and beauty services (including nails, waxing etc - highest level!). You can also walk to the neighbouring mall - Central Plaza Ladprao.  

Another place would be Sampeng market to buy things wholesale (necklaces, earrings, belts, towels, bags, stationeries etc) CHEAP. Best to go with a group of friends so that you can meet the minimum quantity required. 

To tailor make men’s wear, I would recommend Newman exclusive @ Amari Watergate. Pretty good service and quality of materials. 

For services: For massage places, I would recommend Siam Relax (picture below). Went there a few times and found the massage really good! It is also conveniently located, right opposite Siam Paragon. Its the same soi/street as the restaurant, Som Tam Nua. For waxing, I would recommend DADAWAX at Union Mall - good service and reasonably priced! 

For food: Its difficult to say because there are so many choices in BKK but my must-gos include Platinum Food Court (favourites include the Pad Thai, fatty pork rice and noodles), BarBQue Plaza (must order the garlic rice) and MK. I usually look for new places to eat from Aroimakmak. 

Must-eat snacks include Moo Ping (pork satay, best found along the streets), Chatuchak coconut ice cream (Kampaeng Phet Exit 2), and Siam Pandan (picture below). 

5. What to buy back?

As gifts, I usually recommend cloth items (bags, pouches, aprons, tissue box cases) from Naraya because its affordably priced and very distinctively Thai. Another good thing to get is Thai snacks!  

Featuring 1. Pork Floss crackers (so addictive!) 2. Tao Kae Noi Seaweed (think this big bag is the nicest out of all the choices), and 3. Roasted coconut chips (so yummy!). These are my favourites to buy, and all can be found in Big C (near Pratunam).

The GUA-POAK is a sacred herbal oil mixed with male elephants’ terporin, this tar-like discharge is only available while the elephants are in musth. It is life threatening to get that teropin. The elephants in musth discharge a thick tar-like secretion called temporin from the temporal ducts on the sides of the head. Temporin contains proteins, lipids (notably cholesterol), phenols, cresols and sesquiterpenes (notably farnesol and its derivatives).

Musth or must is a periodic condition in bull elephants, characterized by highly aggressive behavior, accompanied by a large rise in reproductive hormones - testosterone levels in an elephant in musth can be as much as 60 times greater than in the same elephant at other times. THE MAKING OF PONG PRAI KUMARN (PONG PRAI KUMARN MAHA PHUUT)

Guru Monks from Thailand who made the best Pong Prai Kumarn are LP Tim of Wat Laharnrai, Rayong Province and LP Tay Kongthong of Wat Sam-ngam Nakorn Pathom Province.

WHAT IS PONG PRAI KUMARN?

It’s a holy powder used for making amulets, and it contains human remains. According to a speech by LP Tim of Wat Laharnrai “obtaining help from power of the Buddha requested by the amulet owners is too slow, but obtaining help from ghosts (spirits) to answer the prayers of the amulet owners is alot faster”.

IS IT BLACK MAGIC? No, it’s not. The Guru monks like LP Tim and LP Tay Kongthong would perform ritual ceremonies to turn / ordain ghosts (spirits) of the dead to “monks”, in Thai called “Buet Phee”. The ghosts (spirits) will not do any harm to the amulet wearers. Those spirits will only do good things and help the amulet wearers for their own merit.

WILL THOSE HOLY SPIRITS LEAVE THE AMULETS? Possibly not. Why?Because each day in spirit world is equal to 100 ordinary solar years of our planet.

WHAT IS ITS POWER?

1) It could make you have a highly activated sixth sense. Sixth sense, or subtle perception ability, is our ability to perceive the subtle-dimension, or the unseen world of angels, ghosts, Heaven (Swarga), etc. It also includes our ability to understand the subtle cause and effect relationship behind many events, which is beyond the understanding of the intellect. HOW WAS IT MADE?

According to the interview of Mr.Kularp Joichareon (Mor Larp), in BE 2515 (1972) LP Tim had the intention to make Buddha amulets as gifts to people who donated for the construction of Sala Pawwana Pirath Building at Wat Laharnrai, and LP Tim told 2 of his non-monk disciples, Mr.Sai Keawsawang, and Mr.Kularp Joichareon (Mor Larp) that “we will go to get the good stuff tonight, the undertaker will cremate E Som at Wat Laharnrai by tomorrow. And the 2 of you must prepare things for the ritual ceremony”. E Som or Mrs.Som was a pregnant girl, a relative of Mr.Sai Keawsawang`s wife. E Som had a fight with her husband and later committed suicide with 7-8 months pregnancy. E Som died on Saturday and was going to be cremated on Tuesday. After 11 pm that night LP Tim later told Mr.Sai Keawsawang, and Mr.Kularp Joichareon that he would go to bed, and LP Tim said “you have to practise what I have taught you yourself!”, so Mr.Sai Keawsawang, and Mr.Kularp Joichareon had to ride bicycles to the grave yard of Wat Laharnyai where the body of E Som was buried, by themselves. Soon after arriving at the grave of E Som, Mr.Sai Keawsawang, and Mr.Kularp Joichareon did the ritual ceremony to ask permission from the Master of the Grave yard, and then asked E Som to give the skull of her unborn child, and some oil from her flesh (Namman Prai) around her abdominal area.

The next day (Tuesday) before the cremation of E Som`s body at Wat Laharnrai, Mr.Sai Keawsawang, and Mr.Kularp Joichareon told the undertaker not to burn her body to ashes. Before cremation, Mr.Sai Keawsawang drilled a hole in the ground of cremation site under the position E Som’s body would be placed, and put an empty iron can to capture body fat of E Som while being burnt. After cremation, in the night, when everybody had left, Mr.Sai Keawsawang, and Mr.Kularp Joichareon went to the cremation site with one kettle of holy water given by LP Tim. Mr.Sai Keawsawang, and Mr.Kularp Joichareon collected the skull of E Som’s unborn child, a rib bone from E Som’s womb area, E Som`s skull, and the iron can that contained Namman Prai.

After getting what they wanted Mr.Sai Keawsawang, and Mr.Kularp Joichareon threw holy water from the kettle from their heads to their toes, to wash away bad omens that would come with the stuff they were taking from the cremation site. Mr.Sai Keawsawang, and Mr.Kularp Joichareon gave the stuff to LP Tim, and LP Tim performed a ritual ceremony in his monk-house alone, non-stop for 3 days and 3 nights without food, drink (LP Tim was a vegetarian), or sleep. After LP Tim’s ritual ceremony, LP Tim gave the 2 skulls and bone to Mr.Kularp Joichareon to grind them into powder by stone mortar. Soon after the grounding had finished, that stone mortar magically broke into 2 pieces.

Mr.Kularp Joichareon could grind those bone and skulls into an amount of fine powder that would fit inside 1 can of Mali Sweetened Condensed Milk 397 ml. Mr.Kularp Joichareon also had to grind 108 kinds of sacred, sun dried herbs, along with a large amount of fertilizer they had previously dried out, then mixed it all with the bone powder. Mr.Kularp Joichareon`s mixture was equivalent to about 1 jar (7200 ml). This was later mixed with Holy Powder`s made by LP Tim including Pong Pattamang, Pong Ittijay and Pong Tri Nisinghe. The total quantity of finished Pong Prai Kumarn was equivalent to about 3 quarters of an iron bucket (16 litres).

Kuman Thong (Thai: กุมารทอง) is an effigy, or statue which is revered in Thailand by animists. They are believed to bring luck and fortune to the owner, if properly revered. Kuman, or Kumara (Pali) means “young boy” (female kumari); thong means golden. Kuman thong is not a Buddhist practice, but necromancy. Genuine Kuman Thong, which was revered and created in ancient times according to traditional method by Adept practitioners of Saiyasart, was made by surgically removing the unborn fetus from the womb of its Mother. The body of the child would then be taken to a cemetery for the conduction of the ceremony to invoke a Kuman Thong. The body is roasted until dry whilst the Mage chants incantations of magical kata. In the case of making a female spirit child, the effigy is not called Kuman Tong, rather “Hong Pray”.

Some Kuman effigies will be soaked in Nam Man Prai, which has extract of a dead child or a person who died in violent circumstances or an unnatural death. This is much less common now, because this practice is now illegal if using fat from human babies for the consecrating oil. There are however still some authentically made amulets appearing.

Some years ago a famous monk was thrown out of the Buddhist sangha for roasting a baby. He was convicted, but later continued to make magic as a layperson after his release. The practice of creating necromantic effigies of a Kuman Tong comes from age old tradition in Thailand. Thai folk have made Bucha to Animistic spirits and ghosts since time immemorial. The original Kuman Tong came from children who died whilst still in their mothers’ wombs. The Magic makers would take these stillborn babies and adopt them as their children.

From what information has been gathered from ancient Thai manuscripts about how to make a Kuman Tong, it appears that the correct method is to remove the dead baby surgically from the mothers’ wombs, and take it to undergo the proper ceremonial ritual; The baby must be roasted until dry. This must be completed before dawn, and should be performed in a cemetery. Once the rite is completed, the dry-roasted Kuman should be painted with Ya Lak (a kind of lacquer used to cover amulets and Takrut with gold leaf, and covered in gold leaf. This is the real reason why this effigy received the name of “Kuman Thong” (which means “Golden Baby Boy”).

Origins

In Thailand, the Kuman Thong is also spoken of in the legend of Khun Chang Khun Phaen, where the character Khun Phaen made one by removing the stillborn baby from the stomach of his wife.
