A concerted boycott (economic sanctions by the people) might be in order.

Koch Industries, whose owners gave to right-wing causes for years, is now financing Putin’s war. The people who make Brawny paper towels, Dixie cups, Quilted Northern toilet paper, Vanity Fair napkins and Georgia-Pacific lumber are abetting the spilling of Ukrainians’ blood.
Before you bite into a Cinnabon (or Carvel ice cream, Schlotzsky’s sandwich or Auntie Anne’s pretzel) consider that parent company Focus Brands is taking a bite out of democracy in Ukraine.
Like Reebok shoes? They’re being used to stomp on Ukraine. Authentic Brands Group, which also owns Aeropostale, Eddie Bauer, Brooks Brothers and Nine West, among others, is in the hall of shame.
So is Subway. While selling you the All-American Club, it’s giving Ukrainians the Cold-Cock Combo by refusing to cut loose its 446 Russian franchises.
Several other household brands — Truvia and Diamond Crystal salt (Cargill), Avon cosmetics (Natura), LG appliances, ASUS laptops, Mission tortillas (Gruma) and Pirelli tires — are produced by companies on the shameful list.
Are you or your mutual fund invested in Halliburton, Baker Hughes or Schlumberger? Then you should know that these oil-services companies could deal a huge blow to Putin’s ability to wage war — but they choose profit instead.
Let’s name and shame all the others among the 33: Advertising firms BBDO, DDB and Omnicom; accountant Baker Tilly; industrial companies Air Liquide, Air Products, Greif, IPG Photonics, Linde, Mettler Toledo, Nalco and Rockwool; French hotelier Accor and retailers Auchan, Decathlon and Leroy Merlin; German wholesaler Metro; cloud service Cloudflare; International Paper; and Sweden’s Oriflame Cosmetics.
Another 72 multinationals have made only partial pullbacks from Russia, such as reducing current operations or holding off on new investments — actions Sonnenfeld calls “very questionable” and “smokescreens.” Included here: Dunkin Donuts, General Mills, Mondelez (Oreos and other Nabisco products), candymaker Mars, Procter & Gamble, Yum Brands (Pizza Hut, Taco Bell), Hilton, Hyatt and Marriott.
I don’t know if they realize this or not, but thanks to monopolies, these businesses are a good chunk of store shelves, fast food joints and hotels.

The coronavirus is surging, but Canada is keeping schools open (Washington Post) It’s been an uncertainty-ridden time for parents across Canada. As cases surge again, provinces are closing businesses, reimposing restrictions on public spaces and urging people to curb private gatherings. Still, as in European countries that are also tightening their rules, Canada is prioritizing keeping its schools open. All 13 provinces and territories are holding classes in person; in only some are hybrid or remote learning even options. In the United States, in contrast, nine states and territories have ordered some or all schools to hybrid or remote learning only, according to a tally kept by Education Week. Individual districts in other states are limiting or banning in-person classes. The incidence rate of covid-19 in people under 20 has increased since schools reopened, a trend the Public Health Agency of Canada says could be tied both to a growing number of school outbreaks and an increase in testing for that age group. Officials are responding by isolating sick pupils, quarantining classes hit by the virus and, in some cases, closing schools temporarily. But they’re resisting the blanket closures and wholesale shift to e-learning of the spring. “On balance, it’s been as expected,” said James Kellner, head of the pediatrics department at the University of Calgary. “And how that’s been has been concerning, but not terrible so far.”
Are ‘Kidfluencers’ Making Our Kids Fat? (NYT) Parents beware: Many YouTube channels that are wildly popular with young children are targeting them with thinly veiled ads for sugary beverages and junk food. That is the conclusion of a new study published on Monday in the journal Pediatrics. The authors of the study analyzed over 400 YouTube videos featuring so-called kid influencers—children with large social media followings who star in videos that show them excitedly reviewing toys, unwrapping presents and playing games. The study found that videos in this genre, which attract millions of young followers and rack up billions of views, were awash in endorsements and product placements for brands like McDonald’s, Carl’s Jr., Hershey’s, Chuck E. Cheese and Taco Bell. About 90 percent of the foods featured in the YouTube videos were unhealthy items like milkshakes, French fries, soft drinks and cheeseburgers emblazoned with fast food logos. The researchers said their findings were concerning because YouTube is a popular destination for toddlers and adolescents. Roughly 80 percent of parents with children 11 years old or younger say they let their children watch YouTube, and 35 percent say their children watch it regularly. Young children are particularly susceptible to marketing. Studies show that children are unable to distinguish between commercials and cartoons until they are 8 or 9 years old, and they are more likely to prefer unhealthy foods and beverages after seeing advertisements for them.
Turkeys (AP) A pertinent question coursing through the $4.3 billion turkey business is a basic one: how many turkeys are we gonna need for this Thanksgiving? It’s an incredibly complicated proposition. Grocery chain Kroger’s research found that 43 percent of shoppers plan to celebrate Thanksgiving with only their immediate family, which if true means that the birds people will want may be smaller, but they’re going to need way more of them as normally large gatherings (which would use a single large bird) temporarily splinter into smaller more intimate gatherings (necessitating multiple smaller birds). A lot is at stake, as in 2019 Americans spent $643 million on turkey in November. Walmart will carry 30 percent more turkey breasts in its stores for those who don’t want a full bird.
As the U.S. votes, the world watches with anxiety and hope (Washington Post) As Americans cast their votes in Tuesday’s presidential election, the world is watching closely, especially allies in Europe and rivals such as Russia, China and Iran, which could expect a very different U.S. foreign policy depending on the outcome. The choice of a U.S. president is always a matter of global importance—to allies, rivals, trading partners, and the web of treaties and institutions that bind countries together. This time, however, the stakes are exceedingly high. Analysts around the world expressed fears for America’s political system, speaking in terms often reserved for fragile democracies. Some commentators in China hope that a Joe Biden win could usher in a diplomatic respite, but fear that the deepened U.S.-China rivalry could persist, whoever wins. Pro-Kremlin media warn elections could lead to chaos and street fighting, predicting that President Trump will be forced to retreat to his White House bunker. Many European leaders fear Trump would weaken or destroy NATO if reelected. In Israel, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made much of his close ties with Trump, analysts wonder if a Democratic win might weaken the Israeli leader’s long hold on power.
Presidential race too early to call (AP) The Associated Press is not calling the presidential race yet because neither candidate has secured the 270 electoral college votes needed to claim victory. Republican Donald Trump said, “Frankly, we did win this election” over Democrat Joe Biden and said he would take the election to the Supreme Court. His assertion of victory does not match the results and information currently available to the AP. Trump or Biden would need 270 electoral votes to win. Several key states are too early to call, including Pennsylvania, Georgia and Michigan.
Hurricane Eta slams into Nicaragua as Category 4 storm (AP) The heart of powerful Hurricane Eta began moving ashore in Nicaragua Tuesday with devastating winds and rains that had already destroyed rooftops and caused rivers to overflow. The hurricane had sustained winds of 140 mph (220 kph), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, down from an overnight peak of 150 mph (240 kph). Landfall came hours after it had been expected. Eta’s eye had hovered just offshore through the night and Tuesday morning. The unceasing winds uprooted trees and ripped roofs apart, scattering corrugated metal through the streets of Bilwi, the main coastal city in the region. Nicaragua’s army moved red-helmeted troops specialized in search and rescue to Bilwi, the main coastal city in an otherwise remote and sparsely populated area.
France ponders new Paris curfew as lockdown rebels frustrate government (Reuters) France could reimpose a night curfew on Paris and possibly the surrounding region amid government frustration that too many people are ignoring lockdown rules as COVID-19 infections soar. France dramatically slowed the spread of the coronavirus in the spring with one of Europe’s strictest lockdowns. But 10 months into the epidemic and with winter drawing in, many are reluctant to endure another period of confinement. New COVID-19 lockdowns and curbs have stirred resistance across Europe even as countries including France and Spain deal with record daily infections and hospitals buckle under the strain.
Bad blood—why France-Turkey cartoon row could leave lasting impact (Reuters) Slights and barbs have marred relations between France’s Emmanuel Macron and Turkey’s Tayyip Erdogan for years, but the row over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad has dragged them to a new low which could have more lasting consequences. If they cannot find a way to mend bridges, momentum is likely to build for a proposal, driven by France, for European Union sanctions on Turkey’s already-fragile economy, according to Turkish analyst Sinan Ulgen. “Neither Erdogan in Turkey nor Macron in France will step back,” said Ulgen, head of the Istanbul-based Centre for Economics and Foreign Policy Studies think tank. A French official familiar with policy towards Turkey said that in the light of the events of the past few weeks: “The question of sanctions is going to be raised.” EU leaders have already said that if Turkey fails to de-escalate tensions in the eastern Mediterranean by Dec. 10, sanctions would follow, though there is no draft proposal yet.
5 dead in Vienna attack (AP) Five people died, including an assailant, and 17 others were wounded in a shooting in the heart of Vienna hours before a coronavirus lockdown started, Austrian authorities said Tuesday. The dead attacker was a 20-year-old Austrian-North Macedonian dual national who had a previous terror conviction. Two men and two women died from their injuries in the attack Monday evening, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said. The suspected attacker was shot and killed by police. Vienna’s hospital service said seven people were in life-threatening condition Tuesday after the attack, the Austrian news agency APA reported. In total, 17 people were being treated in hospitals, with gunshot wounds but also cuts. “It is now confirmed that yesterday’s attack was clearly an Islamist terror attack,” Kurz said. Interior Minister Karl Nehammer later told APA that the dead assailant, who had roots in the Balkan nation of North Macedonia, had a previous conviction under a law that punishes membership in terrorist organizations. The attacker, named as Kujtim Fejzulai, was sentenced to 22 months in prison in April 2019 because he had tried to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State group. He was granted early release in December under juvenile law.
Ukraine close to catastrophe, minister says (Reuters) The situation with the coronavirus in Ukraine is close to catastrophic and the nation must prepare for the worst, health minister Maksym Stepanov said on Tuesday.  Ukraine registered a record 8,899 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the ministry said, up from the Oct. 30 high of 8,312. Total infections stood at 411,093 by Tuesday with 7,532 deaths. Ukraine imposed a strict lockdown in March but eased it in May. Stepanov said the government would consider how to preserve the economy and save people at the same time.
India, U.S., Japan and Australia kick off large naval drills (Reuters) India, the United States, Japan and Australia began their largest joint naval exercises in over a decade on Tuesday, Indian government sources said, seen as part of efforts to balance China’s vast military and economic power in the region. The annual “Malabar” wargames that India holds with the United States and Japan have been expanded to include Australia this year to cover all members of the Quad, an informal group of the four largest democracies in the Indo-Pacific. Five ships of the Indian Navy, including a submarine, were deployed in the exercise along with U.S. Navy’s John S McCain missile destroyer, Australia’s Ballarat frigate and a Japanese destroyer, the Indian ministry of defence said. Later this month, India and the United States will deploy aircraft carriers in the drills, a military source said.
Almost Like Clockwork, Talk of a Military Coup Follows Thai Protests (NYT) There are certain constants in Thailand: the drenching monsoons, the grand openings of new shopping malls and the rumors that the Royal Thai Armed Forces are plotting another coup. For weeks now, student-led protesters across Thailand have taken to the streets every few days, calling for a new constitution with authority over the monarchy, an end to the persecution of the political opposition and the resignation of Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, the retired general who led the most recent military coup, in 2014. While the security forces have not cracked down violently on these peaceful rallies, it’s unclear how long such restraint will last. Nor is it certain how long the army is willing to stay in the barracks, plotting against Mr. Prayuth, who was once one of their own. Whenever the generals launch a coup, the refrain is the same: Thailand needs a return to order, without messy rallies or dissenting voices. “I see a coup as not a bad thing,” said Sondhi Limthongkul, a prominent royalist. As recently as last week, Mr. Sondhi publicly called for yet another military intervention to restore stability and protect the monarchy, urging the military to quickly hand over power after seizing it so the king could oversee the formation of a unity government.
Oman to bring in income taxes (Foreign Policy) Oman is planning to introduce an income tax on top earners, beginning in 2022, in what would be a first for Gulf nations. The move comes as Oman attempts to narrow its budget deficit from 19 percent of GDP today, to closer to 2 percent in four years’ time. Up until now, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, have been taxing their populations slowly, using a value-added tax on purchases rather than taxing income.

At some point during the middle of your fifth draft of a marketing PowerPoint or your third hour compiling datasets, every one of us firmly lodged into the scaffolding of the white collar complex hits a moment where "everything we do is bullshit am-i-right" switches from a 7 6 5 o'clock joke over drinks to an existential crisis. Your entire life just isn't real, all of it is just cycles of ego-stroking signalling and justifying quarterly budgets, and the edifice of every career along your metro line hollows out into dissipating exhaust. For most of us the moment will pass, you will mutter 仕方がない to yourself (what, you expected c'est la vie? This isn't the 1920's, people like you still made things then - its the Asian Century, welcome to the Zero'th world), go home, and if was a really bad spell maybe cook something "authentic" for dinner as dictated by a Youtube chef that employees three production assistants and a marketing director to litigate the proper way to sous-vide pork for a taco (yeah, that is still French - the trick is that it never was). A precious few, however, will be at just the right stage of wealthy enough and fed-up enough to go full Stardew Valley and buy a farm. Or a bespoke chocolatier shop. Maybe a....vintage milk jug kitchenware craft workshop? I don't know, I haven't lived in Williamsburg in almost 5 years, you cant expect me to be hip to the trends, I work a white collar job, pastiche and the macro-level is all that I am- So lets say its a tea plantation farm (we will never be that Asian), and you get into it. Real salt of the earth work, you are splitting buds at the right phases of the spring moon, testing those leaves for the acidity, fermenting and oxidizing them just enough to hit that Oolong sweet spot, and after a half cycle of Earth's merry dance around your orb of tea-fuel you have produced...approximately 1/26th the amount per person of an actual tea plantation (its in Assam, they can use it). Its not just that you haven't made enough to build a business - you haven't even made enough to pay property taxes. Apparently the dull, monotonous coin of the urban bureaucratic society has a flipside, a relentless, unforgiving culling operation of society's unprofitables - one you never interacted with because you never flipped that coin. Now its pointing tails right at your face, resting in the dirt that is costing you $500 monthly per acre, and you need to get moving.
You only have one script available to you, if you want to make something "real" - quality over quantity, right? Except consumers can't tell the difference between a 20-year pu'er and recycled coffee grinds, so you need to trick them- oh, I'm sorry, "cultivate a luxury experience". Which starts with a logo (+1 graphic designer), adding in new flavours, oh my apologies, "floral notes" (+2 sourcing agents), and organizing meet-and-greets and product showcases for every wholesaler and tea shop that the Amtrak gives you rickety, most-certainly-not-zeroth-world-quality access to (+2 sales team members). To top it all off you need a hefty online presence, since having a "brand" is the Fountain of Youth, perpetually sustaining and utterly inexplicable, yet somehow it is composed entirely of quantifiable metrics - at least according to the +1 ex-Youtuber digital marketing director you hired. And of course, as inexorably as you always, deep down, *knew* that it would be when you first were desperate enough to give this a shot, you look back after your third round of bank loan negotiations and realize you haven't "made" anything real in months.
---------
On Twitter today someone pointed out how baffled they were, emotionally, when someone commits suicide without just trying anything else. Move to Thailand, move to the damn woods, just stockpile LSD and move into your personal dreamscape, anything would be better. I have always had the same thought, on suicide at least. But society, at its very foundation, is built on its members accepting its framing, buying into the obligations it places on you. One of the ways it does that is how many options it does actually provide - you totally can switch careers, open an Etsy, whatever. The trick is how similar they all wind up being - which they have to be, as they have to sustain society. These are the options we are used to looking for, they are the ones we have scripts for. Or well, to discard the narrative distance gifted by the first person plural, the ones I am used to. I have never been suicidal, yet I cant really judge anyone - I have spent years doing so many things I hate not because I am incapable of stopping my participation in those things, but because I am incapable of stopping my participation in a way that is socially acceptable. I couldn't just go live in the woods and make tea for myself, I would need to have a tea *business*, to "be valuable" to people, to society, because its all I know to be. And all the scripts for that involve property taxes. I don't have any scripts for burning it all down and starting over from scratch.
But, while I personally don't need them, society has given me plenty of scripts for committing suicide. Perhaps I'm just lucky the scripts I'm stuck on only lead to existential dread.

The Top BYOB Restaurants in Philly
https://j.mp/3sCpXZf BYO culture in Philly is unique among American cities. It came about due to the influence of the  PLCB and high rent in Center City’s restaurant district.  For most chefs, the choice is to either focus on their debt or focus on the food.  Many opt for the latter and open a small BYOB in an outlying neighborhood. Philly’s dining culture is headed with them. At this point, the grand ole restaurants (Le Bec Fin, Susanna Foo, Striped Bass)  on the 1500 block of Walnut Street have been gone a long, long time.  It’s places like Queen Village, NoLibs, Passyunk Ave, Chinatown, East Falls, Northern Liberties, and the Gayborhood that have taken over as must-visit destinations for foodies. Here is our current list of the top BYOB in Philly. Enjoy! Table of contentsTop Wine-Friendly BYOB1. June BYOB2. Pumpkin3. Bibou4. Jaxon5. Little Fish6. Entree BYOB7. Fiorino8. Umai Umai9. Isot Mediterranean CuisineTop Beer-Friendly BYOB1. Perla2. Vientiane Bistro3. Jong Ka Jib4. Parada Maimon5. El Limon6. Apricot Stone7. Saté Kampar9. China Gourmet10. Terakawa RamenThe Start of the BYO Movement Top Wine-Friendly BYOB 1. June BYOB 690 Haddon Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08108 Our top spot for French food in the Philadelphia region.  This lovely BYO is run by the husband and wife team Richard and Christina Cusack. Rich earned his stripes at Danielle NYC and Le Bec Fin.  Christina is a Level 3 Somm and currently working on her Advanced Sommelier degree via the National Wine School. Expertly executed, this is Classical french food—a perfect accompaniment for your top bottles of wine.  June BYOB 2. Pumpkin 1713 South St, Philadelphia, PA 19146 Pumpkin is one of the patriarchs on this list, and still going strong; both Jaxon and Will owe their existence to this little Graduate Hospital BYO. Their Sunday Prix fixe menu is a longstanding tradition, and of the best dining values in the city. Their ala carte menu changes daily, and dinner is always a pleasure. Chef-Owner Ian Moroney (who got his start at the original Little Fish, back when his father was the chef-owner) has kept the quality very high for a remarkable amount of time. Pumpkin 3. Bibou 1009 S 8th St, Philadelphia, PA 19147 BIBOU HAS TRANSITIONED TO BE A BOUTIQUE GROCERY Chef Pierre Calmels has been at the top of Philly’s BYO scene for over a decade. This ever-evolving tasting menu is a rare jewel. Pierre is truly one of the greatest French chefs working in America today. Also, he baked me a birthday cake when they first opened, which was the coolest thing ever.  Bibou 4. Jaxon 701 N 3rd St, Philadelphia, PA 19123 One of the best new BYO restaurants Philly has seen in years. Chef Matthew Gansert has learned a thing or two from his stint at Will. Well-executed dishes with subtle flavors and precise culinary techniques.  Unlike Will, portion sizes are on the larger size, and a tade more traditional. Philly’s Top BYOBs: Jaxon 5. Little Fish 746 S 6th St, Philadelphia, PA 19147 This little joint has had more locations and owners and chefs than a tiny BYO should.  The idea of this restaurant has captured the imagination of nearly two decades of chefs, owners, and diners. Despite the changes, it has remained a magical little joint in Bella Vista. The perfect place to pop open your favorite whites and roses. Little Fish 6. Entree BYOB  1608 South St Philadelphia, PA 19146 This is the type of BYOB that put Philly on the national food scene. A timeless menu makes this a go-to local joint. Entree BYOB 7. Fiorino 3572 Indian Queen Ln, Philadelphia, PA 19129 For old-school Italian food, we usually point our Uber towards South Philly. However, for Philly’s top Italian BYO, we now roll in the opposite direction.  This East Falls focuses on Emilia-Romagna cuisine and consistently outshines its peers in a city deep in gravy. While nothing on the menu would surprise the diner — veal marsala, spaghetti and clams, and Gorgonzola gnocchi are all represented —  the execution and attention to detail are extraordinary. Bring your best bottle of Nebbiolo or a ripasso and have a great night. Fiorino 8. Umai Umai  533 N 22nd St, Philadelphia, PA 19130 Long-standing BYO with an inventive menu.  One of the only restaurants still remaining from the last wave of chef-run restaurants.  Back in the day, this was the go-to Sushi restaurant when the Wine School of Philadelphia was located in Fairmount.  The sashimi is good, but the main attraction is the hand-rolls  Umai Umai 9. Isot Mediterranean Cuisine 622 S 6th St Philadelphia, PA 19147 Eastern Mediterranean food is becoming a core element of the Philly restaurant scene. From the Israeli powerhouse Zahav to the Middle Eastern Spice Finch to the (deeply disappointing and over-hyped) Lebanese food of Suraya.  This Turkish BYOB is a welcome addition to the Meze explosion we are currently seeing in Philly.  Isot Mediterranean Cuisine Top Beer-Friendly BYOB 1. Perla  1535 S 11th St, Philadelphia, PA 19147  Beautiful Filipino food from a classically trained chef. The weekly eat-with-your-hands Kamayan feasts are out of this world.   Perla 2. Vientiane Bistro  2537 Kensington Ave  Philadelphia, PA 19125 Classical Laotian food, with the spice and contrast of flavors that have not been watered-down. Lao cuisine is very similar to Isan (Northeastern) Thai food.  Vientiane Bistro 3. Jong Ka Jib 6600 N 5th St, Philadelphia, PA 19126 When done well, Soondubu will turn the most ardent meat-eater into a blubbering tofu-lover. This Korean dish is comprised of two main components: a bowl of rice and another bowl of stew. Each is served in a lava-hot bowl.  Whisk the supplied raw egg into the stew, pop open a few pilsners, and you are ready to begin your journey into a whole new way of eating. And the place you need to do this is Jong Ka Jib in Oak Lane. Jong Ka Jib 4. Parada Maimon 345 N 12th St, Philadelphia, PA 19107  The spot for Caribbean food in Philly, in particular Dominican cuisine.  The highlight here is the excellent mofongo. Parada Maimon 5. El Limon 103 Spring Mill Ave, Conshohocken, PA 19428 This is the penultimate family-run restaurant. Just stepping over the threshold feels like entering your Abuela’s kitchen.  There are several locations now, but this is still the best (although Ardmore is dangerously close to the Tired Hands brewery). The main attraction here is the shrimp burritos, and the tacos are legit. El Limon 6. Apricot Stone 1040 N American St, Ste 601, Philadelphia, PA 19123 There is more to the Mediterranean than Italy, France, and Spain. The eastern shores are better known as the Middle East, and some of the oldest cuisines in the world. This NoLibs BYO offers up stellar Syrian food. Similar to Israeli and Middleeaster food cuisine in general,   you will see falafel, kebabs, and hummus on the menu. However, the execution at this BYO is exceptional. Apricot Stone 7. Saté Kampar  1837 E Passyunk Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19148 Authentic Malaysian food on Passyunk Ave. It’s all about the meat skewers. : Saté Kampar 8. Los Gallos 951 Wolf St, Philadelphia, PA 19148  The Mexican joint all South Philly taquerias are judged by.  Tacos and salsas to live by. Just don’t expect to find street parking nearby. Los Gallos 9. China Gourmet  2842 St Vincent Street Philadelphia, PA 19149 The Dim-Sum Mecca of Philadelphia. The Northeast has become the center for Cantonese food in the region. China Gourmet 10. Terakawa Ramen 204 N 9th St, Philadelphia, PA 19107 You can’t go wrong with a bowl of handmade wavy noodles and pork bone soup that’s been simmering for 48 hours.  Umami-rich flavors that can be cranked up with a hit of chili, or toned down with ground sesame.  A few standouts are the Tan Tan Ramen and the Kyushu Danji. Terakawa Ramen Here’s a short and sweet promo for our classes: learn to cook, how to pair, and generally be the best amateur sommelier and/or chef you can be. Check them out and see if anything catches your fancy. Hope to see you soon! The Start of the BYO Movement We had a few questions regarding why & how the BYO movement began in Philly. Rent for restaurants in Center City can be as high as $34K a month, while the average rent in outlining neighborhoods can be as low as $2k a month. Add to that the high cost of liquor licenses, which can cost upwards of a quarter-million dollars, and the fact that restaurants cannot buy wine at wholesale (the PLCB only gives restaurants a 7% discount rather than the 30-50% discount in most other states). Some of this is changing. For updates on the current wine laws (PLCB or otherwise), check here: Wine Law in Pennsylvania.  ———————- FORMER Best BYO Winners These BYOB restaurants have been pulled from the Best Restaurant list for one of two reasons: they are no longer in business, or the quality of their offerings has fallen off.  Will BYOB For sheer brilliance, there isn’t a place better than Will. Chris Kearse is one of the most innovative chefs working in Philly today. Small portions, perfect execution, and compelling preparations make this a go-to restaurant for everyone in the know. Cadence CADENCE HAS CLOSED FOR GOOD, DUE TO COVID. One of the most brilliant and innovative meals to be had in Philadelphia can be had at this BYOB. Compelling and unexpected flavors are layered into local and seasonal ingredients. Menu works very well with Spanish and natural wines. Helm Back in the oughts, the BYO scene in Philly was happening like nothing else on the East Coast. The level of creativity and passion and endless chefs wanting to make a name for themselves was staggering.  There was a system in place for chefs to earn their stripes. Most worked their way up through the ranks of the Vetri or Perrier culinary empires. Opened a BYO, and launched their career. That isn’t happening as much anymore. The economy sucks, commercial rents are rising in many neighborhoods. There are fewer talented cooks willing to toil for the low wages that come with salaried restaurant work. It seems that Olde Kensington is the place where the BYO scene can still exist in it’s former glory. Helm is a ridiculously good restaurant. Creative and intuitive menus that offer elements of farm-to-table without it seeming coy or reductive. Flavors are well thought through and exciting.  Highly recommended. L’Oceano Collingswood has a well-deserved reputation of fostering a Philly-like BYO scene. L’Oceano is the best of the bunch. The ala carte menu is eclectic, and a bit out of step with modern trends. For instance, the current menu offers lobster mac and cheese, grilled caesar salad, pork shank, and maple glazed salmon: all dishes more commonly offered a decade ago. Khmer Kitchen Nothing wrong with a little bit of retro cuisine. After all, who can say no to a lobster corndog? Plus, they do a great Crab Gravy Dinner on Sundays. Doma There is a lot of sushi in Philly. Sadly, there isn’t much good sushi in Philly. Like most  Sushi joints in Philly, this one isn’t Japanese, but Korean. The style is more robust and a greater focus on signature rolls and sauces. However, Doma takes the gold because of it’s traditional sashimi, which relies on freshness and execution. Nine Ting Skip the bbq and head straight to the classic hotpot. The all-you-can-eat element may seem a bit Middle America, but it’s a custom in China and Korea. This is the Korean-style hotpot, aka Shabu Shabu. Ordering the Benz pot which allows you to try three of the soups for the same price. The pig bone, tomato, and spicy soups are the way to go, and make sure to hit the condiment station, too. Tre Scalini This is one of the few restaurants in Philly that cooks from an authentically Italian place.  This is quintessential Southern Italian food, Molise in particular. Off the list due to customer service issues Laurel Let’s get this out of the way, yes, Nick Elmi won Top Chef. Yes, it’s now almost impossible to get a reservation. Yes, there are only a dozen seats in this restaurant. That said, go anyways. Plead, threaten, or pitch a fit. Just get a reservation. Nick has a delicate and elegant touch with ingredients that is as rare as it is refreshing. His dishes are often subtle and winsome. Is he the Robert Frost of chefs? No longer a BYOB Nomad Pizza Company This is simply the best pizza in Philly. Let’s be clear: this isn’t Philly-style pizza (aka Greek pizza or Tomato Pie). This is traditional Neapolitan pizza. The crust is better than most drugs, so be warned.  Bring your bottles of  Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo. The most awesome Art Etchells pointed out that Nomad in Philly now has a liquor license.  The original in Hopewell, NJ  is still a BYO. Ulivo Joseph Scarpone may be a local boy, but he spent years cooking in Napa Valley. He returned to Philly to open the critically acclaimed Sovalo in NoLibs in 2008.  He brings a lot of his cal-ital finesse to Ulivio, but  the stress is now firmly on the Ital, not the Cal. Sadly, Ulivo closed.  Mr. Scarpone, you will be missed. The Farm and Fisherman One of the failings of most BYO is service and ambiance. A tiny chef-run restaurant will put out amazing food, but there is often no budget for a General Manager, who would be able to run the front of the house. That can mean the occasional misstep or quirky experience.  That is not the case here. Along with a  well-designed dining room, the waitstaff is excellent. The food is extraordinary, to boot.
That can mean the occasional misstep or quirky experience.  That is not the case here. Along with a  well-designed dining room, the waitstaff is excellent. The food is extraordinary, to boot. Lol the White House’s Economic Council for Restaurants Is Just a Bunch of Chains and Four Fine Dining Chefs
Tumblr media
Thomas Keller, one of the few restaurant chef-owners on the food and beverage sounding board, said he is “honored” to join. | Photo by Rob Kim/Getty Images for Starwood Preferred Guest
Thomas Keller, Wolfgang Puck, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and Daniel Boulud are the only independent operators involved
The White House announced on April 14 the creation of “economic revival industry groups,” consisting of more than 200 “executives, economists, scholars, and industry leaders” who will serve as a sounding board for the White House’s attempt to reopen the economy amid the coronavirus pandemic. The food and beverage group, notably, is made up almost entirely of executives from major restaurant chains, industry associations, food and drink manufacturers, and a few high-profile chef-restaurateurs.
Honored @realdonaldtrump asked me & @danielboulud @wolfgangpuck @jeangeorges to join @whitehouse Great American Economic Revival Industry Group. Proud to work together towards a strategy where the safety of Americans is top of mind in conjunction towards economic revitalization.

Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey
PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta
Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy
Subway CEO John Chidsey
Bloomin’ Brands (parent company of Outback Steakhouse, Carrabba’s Italian Grill) CEO David Deno
YUM! Brands (parent company of KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut) CEO David Gibbs
Papa John’s CEO Rob Lynch
Wendy’s CEO Todd Penegor
Waffle House CEO Walt Ehmer
Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson
Wolfgang Puck
Thomas Keller
Jean-Georges Vongerichten
Daniel Boulud
M Crowd Restaurant co-founder Ray Washburne (a member of the president’s intelligence advisory board)
Jimmy John’s founder Jimmy John Liautaud
With these new additions added to the list on April 15:
Kraft SVP of Corporate & Government Affairs Michael Mullen
National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors CEO Dirk Van Dongen
International Franchise Association CEO Robert Cresanti
Inspire Brands (parent company of Arby’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, Sonic, Jimmy John’s) CEO Paul Brown
Overall, the makeup of this industry group doesn’t look too different from the participants in President Trump’s mid-March restaurant industry conference call, which included executives from chains and corporations like McDonald’s USA, Domino’s Pizza, Chick-fil-A, Subway, Papa John’s, Wendy’s, Restaurant Brand International, Bloomin’ Brands, YUM! Brands, Raising Cane’s, and Darden Restaurants.
That call was criticized by restaurateurs for not including one single independent operator. The White House’s answer to that criticism, apparently, was to add four chef-owners — Wolfgang Puck, Thomas Keller, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Daniel Boulud — all known for their backgrounds in French cuisine, their restaurant empires spanning across the country, and their positions in the highest echelons of industry fame, acclaim, and opportunity. They were also, coincidentally, the only known chefs who were able to arrange a call with Trump to discuss restaurant owners’ battle over business-interruption insurance and other effects of COVID-19 on independent restaurants.
It is notable, as some observed on social media, that the White House’s hand-picked representatives of the food and beverage industry — at least, those who agreed to be involved — is nearly devoid of people of color, and entirely devoid of women. (Meanwhile, there are two Dans and two Davids.) Even more pressing is the fact that the interests of the everyday server, the immigrant cook, the independent mom-and-pop restaurant operator — essentially the working class whose labor undergirds the entire business of how consumers get to eat and drink — are damningly absent.
And yet, one must ask, what did we expect? There’s little integrity to be found sniffing around the White House’s ill-advised attempts to restore the economy and some sense of normalcy in a profoundly abnormal time, when one false start could accelerate the spread of the coronavirus and force the country into isolation all over again. Somehow, it makes perfect sense that the leaders advising the president are major chains — who are cashing in on the limited pool of Payroll Protection Program loans meant to help small businesses — and industry kings who are better known for being part of an old-guard generation of dining.

Where To Find Low Sodium Ingredients
Tumblr media
Questions about sources are some of the most frequently asked ones that I get. Many people have difficulty finding ingredients in their local stores. So it seems worthwhile to occasionally try to summarize what I know about some of the more common ingredients. I'll talk about what ingredients I'm aware of that can help you reduce the sodium content of recipes and where I get them, both locally and through online sources. Many of the suggestions have come from you readers. Obviously, I can't include information on all the stores that may or may not have specific products. I get lots of tips form readers that I pass on and one enhancement I'm looking at for our Low Sodium Community membership site is to put all that info in the bulletin board there. But for now, you may still have to do a lot of searching shelves and reading labels to see what is available where you live.
First of all a little background information. I live in southern Maryland, about in the middle of that peninsula south of Washington DC between the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River. I do most of my local shopping at Safeway, with an occasional trip to Giant Food, Food Lion, Sam's Club, BJ's Wholesale Club and a local southern Maryland chain called McKay's. I buy many of the items I use at one of these places. I also stop by my local health food store occasionally. I live in a rural area, so the items I get here should be available in many areas, but there is no guarantee. Stores carry what they think will sell, and the store manager has some discretion in choosing those items. So letting your store manager know that you want low sodium items stocked may help. I've seen cases where a manager will order something new for you and ones where they don't, because they feel the space could be used for something that more people want. It never hurts to ask. If you have in your area a store that specializes in organic foods like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's is often a good source of low sodium items. The closest one to me is more than an hour away, so I don't get there that often. Some of the larger grocery chains also have good organic sections with a number of low sodium choices.
There is one primary online source that I'm going to mention right up front here because they carry a large variety of low sodium items. Healthy Heart Market at http://www.healthyheartmarket.com They specialize in low sodium items and carry some things that you probably didn't even know came in low sodium versions. Pete, the founder, is a great guy, and actually got me started in this newsletter bit when he published one of my recipes in his newsletter. Healthy Heart Market also ships to Canada for those of you who live in our neighbor to the north. The service is great, the prices and shipping costs are reasonable and the selection is extensive. Besides that, it makes good sense to patronize those places that are striving to make a living providing the products that we all need and often find difficult to locate. It's a win for both sides.
The other online source I'll mention is Net Grocer at http://www.netgrocer.com. They carry a large selection of grocery items from many of the major national brands. Although they don't specialize in low sodium, they do have a lot of items that I haven't found locally. If your local store doesn't carry a particular item, you may want to check there.
Baking Powder - In my humble opinion, this is a no-brainer. If you bake anything that uses baking powder with the regular stuff off your grocer's shelves you are eating sodium that can easily be avoiding. Given the amount of sodium in standard baking powder it's likely to be 100-200 mgs per serving. Some doctors also believe the aluminum in regular baking powder is bad for you. The simple solution is sodium free, aluminum free baking powder. There are several brands available, but the only one I've actually seen is Featherweight. I can find it at a local health food store sometimes. It's also available for just about the same price that I can buy it locally at both Healthy Heart Market and Salt Watcher. The price is also comparable to the regular baking powder and the resulting baked goods are the same as those made with regular baking powder. The only drawback I've seen is that is sometimes seems to leave little darker brown spots in light colored baked items.
Baking Soda - Like baking powder, regular baking soda is unnecessary sodium intake. The only brand of sodium free baking soda I'm familiar with is Ener-G and it is also available at both Healthy Heart Market and Salt Watcher. You need to remember to double the amount called for in your favorite recipes. I've had a few items that didn't rise quite as well as I expected and have heard the same thing from other people. I don't know if it's more sensitive to the amount of acid ingredients in the mix or what causes this. Most of the time it works great.
Kitchen Appliances and Reviews - Definitely check out ReviewKitchenware for accurate reviews and tips.
Seasoning Blends - This covers a whole range of items like seasoned salt, seafood seasoning, taco seasoning and other blends like Cajun, barbecue and curry powders. You'll likely be able to find some salt free versions of these on your regular grocer's shelves. Mrs. Dash makes a number of different blends that are widely available and major spice manufacturers like McCormack do also. Many spices come in bottles small enough to be exempt from the usual labeling requirements in the US, so you'll need to read the ingredient list and look for added salt. Health food stores and stores with large organic or gourmet sections often stock salt free spice blends. A couple of the more common brands are Frontier and The Spice Hunter. Healthy Heart Market and Salt Watcher both have a large selection of different flavors and brands. There also are a number of recipes for making your own blends on the web site at http://www.lowsodiumcooking.com/free/Archive.htm#condiments.
Tomato Products - Tomato products without salt are available from a number of national brands like Hunts and Del Monte as well as in store brands. Whole and diced tomatoes, stewed tomatoes, tomato sauce and tomato paste are all easy to find here. Most stores carry a couple of brands, in fact. The amount of sodium in the different brands varies a little and I personally prefer the flavor of the Del Monte brand. If you can't find them locally, Healthy Heart Market, Salt Watcher and Net Grocer all carry them online. There are also several brands of organic salt free tomatoes that may be available in health food stores. Eden Organic even makes salt free tomatoes with chilies, for those who may have been Rotel fans, also available at Salt Watcher and Healthy Heart Market.
Soy Sauce - The amount of sodium in soy sauce was a major disappointment to me, the guy who used to say he could eat Chinese six night a week. For almost a year and a half after starting the diet, I ate none at all. Then I began adding an occasional meal with low sodium soy sauce. After much experimenting and with a little help from a subscriber and an old recipe, I finally came up with a recipe for a substitute. If you don't want to go to the bother of making your own, the lowest sodium widely available commercial brand I know of is Angostura Lite, with 390 mg per tablespoon, but may be difficult to find.
Spaghetti Sauce - When I first started the diet, my only choices when it came to spaghetti sauce were to make my own, order some from Healthy Heart Market or buy the expensive health food store brand. Then our local Safeway began carrying No Salt Added Francesco Rinaldi Marinara Sauce. It only comes in the one variety, but the flavor is good, it only has 25 mg of sodium per serving and you can always add to it if you like chunky veggies or something in your sauce. Unfortunately, none of my local stores carry it any longer, but it is still available from the manufacturer at http://www.francescorinaldi.com/shop/welcome.asp If you can't find that locally, almost any spaghetti sauce recipe will work if you just leave out the salt. There are also several varieties available from Healthy Heart Market and Net Grocer. I've had a number of people write in about different brands of salt free pasta sauce, mostly from small manufacturers who specialize in organic food, so you also may be able to find other brands locally.
Barbecue Sauce/Salsa/etc. - Big name commercial brands of these products almost always have too much sodium. But they are relatively easy to make yourself from the recipes at http://www.lowsodiumcooking.com/free/Archive.htm Or go to Healthy Heart Market for a good variety of all of these types of products. One of my current favorites is a very low salt brand of Salsa from Enrico's that I found at a local store that has a good variety of organic foods.
Ketchup - Both Hunts and Heinz make no salt added versions. The Hunts brand is widely available at almost all large grocery stores here in Maryland. Both are also available online.
Mustard - This is a real mixed bag. You will probably be able to find mustards on your grocer's shelves that run anywhere from 20 to more than 100 mg per teaspoon. The sweeter varieties like honey mustard generally have the least. Healthy Heart Market carries a number of different flavored low sodium mustards. A couple of personal favorites are the Herlocher's Dipping Mustard (great with unsalted pretzels) and the Westbrae No Salt Stoneground, which has a flavor and texture similar to Gray Poupon Country French.
Unsalted Butter and Margarine - When I first started the low sodium diet it seemed a good reason to switch from regular margarine to unsalted butter. It was readily available, sodium free and tasted great. Then my doctor suggested lowering my cholesterol. So I was off on a search for unsalted margarine. It's not as commonly stocked as unsalted butter, but it does exist in several national brands. I was always able to get the Fleishmann's, but it has been harder to find lately as my local Safeway no longer stocks it. I also use the I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spray for things like toast and vegetables. It is still low in sodium and much lower in fat than putting a glob of butter or margarine on something. This is an area where you'll need to weigh your personal diet needs. Between the cholesterol in butter and the hydrogenated fats in margarine, there's much to be said for using as little as possible of whichever one you chose.
Bouillon - What a difference being "salt free" makes. An envelope of regular bouillon contains over 200 times as much sodium as the low sodium variety. Wyler's make a low sodium bouillon, although none of my local stores carry it. So does Herb Ox and it is readily available around here. Unfortunately, I can't find it in the larger jar, only the single serving envelopes, which can be less convenient. I've heard from readers that they can still get the jar though, so as always check your local stores. If you can't find it locally, it's available online. An alternative is to use the low sodium soup and stock bases that are available. I haven't seen any of them locally, but they are available from Healthy Heart Market or directly from manufacturers like RediBase at http://www.redibase.com They also come in a wider variety like ham and veggie flavor ones with 140 mg per serving, in addition to the very low sodium chicken and beef ones with 35 mg per serving. They are a bit more expensive than bouillon, but they go a long way and the flavor is *much* more natural.
Broth - You can make your own broth fairly easily and cheaply in a crockpot There are also good low sodium canned broths out there for those of you who don't want to go to the trouble. But they may not be available in your local stores ... unfortunately the Campbell's brand is a bit higher in sodium than some of the others. I've been able to find the Health Valley brand in several stores here, but it contains almost as much sodium as the Campbell's. Healthy Heart Market both carries low sodium broths.
Soup - This is another case where the "lower sodium" soups from major manufacturers usually still contain significant sodium, so you'll need to be careful and study the label to see what you are really getting. No salt added soup mixes and make it yourself recipes are usually a better choice, although there are some salt free ones from organic producers like Eden Organic and Health Valley . Healthy Heart Market carries low sodium soups and mixes.
Canned Vegetables - Del Monte makes a pretty good selection of no salt added canned veggies. The Giant Food store locally recently began stocking them. They are also available from Net Grocer.
Beans - It's easy and very cheap to cook your own beans using the dried ones that every grocery store carries. For a bit more money you can buy canned unsalted ones like those from Eden Organic. They are available at health food stores and online. You may also want to give your grocery shelf a good hard look. Giant Food carries a store brand of unsalted kidney beans, the only ones I've seen around here. And several local stores here carry some of the Eden Organic products.
Bread - If you are like most people, one of the biggest single changes that you can make to reduce your sodium intake is to make your own bread. Most commercial bread has well over 100 mg per slice. Many rolls and specialty breads like muffins and bagels are in the 300-400 mg range. A bread machine can reduce the amount of effort required to make your own yeast bread to a manageable level. It takes at most 10 minutes to load it and turn it on. You can even set it on a timer to have your house filled with the aroma of fresh bread when you come home. And you have the satisfaction of knowing that great taste of warm bread is accompanied by a single digit sodium count. You will read that the salt in bread recipes is required to help control the yeast. Don't believe it. Other than an occasional loaf that has risen too fast and fallen in on top, I've not had a problem. Even in the rare times when that happens, it still tastes just as good. Reducing the amount of yeast the next time you use that recipe usually solves the problem. If you decide to purchase your bread you should read the label carefully. Stores here like Safeway and Giant have carried low sodium bread, but it's getting harder to find. Pita bread low in sodium may be available. There are also several national brands that make salt free bread. Both Alvarado Street Bakery and Food For Life make no salt added sprouted grain bread that is carried nationally in grocery chains and organic food stores. Salt Watcher also has the Food For Life Ezekiel 4:19 low sodium bread,
Mayonnaise - This is another area of wide variation. Healthy Heart Market sells a sodium free, egg free mayo from Hains. The lowest I can find here locally is 60 mg per serving for a Spectrum Safflower Oil Mayo. Most run 100 or more mg per serving. You can also make your own mayo without salt, but I honestly am not as fond of the taste.
Cheese - There's good news here, even though your choices are pretty limited. Swiss cheese is usually fairly low in sodium, while most other cheeses aren't. And even with Swiss there's a lot of variation. My favorite low sodium Swiss from Alpine Lace isn't around any more, but Kraft and a number of other brands are 50 mg per serving or less. Food Lion also carries a block of Swiss with only 10 mg per serving and I've heard of other stores that have similar products. The flavor of the Food Lion one is quite good. Boar's Head makes Swiss that you can find at their stores or the deli counter that are very good and very low. They have a no salt 10 mg per serving Swiss, but their Lacey Swiss is also only 35 mg per serving. The problem comes when you want something other than Swiss. Most regular cheddar and jack cheese is in the 180-200 mg per 1/4 cup range. Boar's Head has a Munster with 75 mg per serving. They also have a Provolone with 140 mg, which is a little high, but lower than most you'll find on the grocery shelf. Bel Gioioso Fresh Mozzarella Cheese has only 85 mg per serving. The Mozzarella Company at http://www.mozzco.com also makes and sells online an unsalted mozzarella, but it is quite a bit more expensive than the Bel Gioioso. You can probably also find fresh mozzarella with the gourmet cheeses in most large groceries. It has a lot less sodium than the pre-shredded mozzarella most people think of first. Black Diamond Cheese, in Ontario, Canada used to make a low sodium cheddar that was available in Canada and the northern US, but it doesn't seem to be listed on their website anymore, so they may no longer be making it.
Bacon - There are some reasonably low sodium versions available (and some astronomically high ones, so read the labels carefully). Gwaltney and a Safeway store brand are 120 mg per 2 slices. And Kunzler's Honey Cured Bacon is only 75 mg per 2 slices.
Sausage - Unlike bacon, I've never found any low sodium sausage. I spent the first several years on this diet looking for low sodium products, reading recipes and trying to come up with a recipe for making my own. Some of them weren't too bad ... some of them were. And none was quite what I wanted. Then I discovered Wassi's Meat at http://www.wassis.com Their web page said they were the largest seller of breakfast sausage seasonings on the net. They offer a number of no-salt varieties, including Italian, kielbasa and the best salt-free breakfast sausage I've found. Making the sausage can be as easy as measuring spices and mixing it into ground pork or turkey. I like to grind my own meat so I can also control the amount of fat. And the good news is that a ground pork loin, or well trimmed shoulder roast or country style ribs is not only much lower in fat, it's also about half the price that ground pork is here. Wassi's does require a $10 minimum purchase for online orders.
Meats - These days many fresh meats are "enhanced" by injecting them with a broth solution to make them juicer. Unfortunately, it also increases the sodium level from 75-80 mg per serving to more than 300 mg. This is especially true of chicken and increasingly true of pork also. There is still unadulterated meat around, but you have to be careful and look for it. Safeway carries a Butcher's Cut store brand that is marked "minimally processed. And BJ's Wholesale Club has Perdue All Natural chicken in a number of different cuts. They also sell pork loins and other large cuts of pork and beef that are both a good price and untreated with anything that adds sodium. All of the Perdue chicken at Sam's Club, on the other hand, contains added sodium. I've also seen several instances of pork that was marked as being "enhanced", but that didn't contain a nutrition label to let you know how much sodium had been added. I now buy most of my meat at a local store that cuts and proceeses it themselves. In mnay cases it's not only better tasting and lower in sodium, but cheaper than the same cuts at the grocery chains.
Deli and Sandwich Meats - There was a long period where I figured that foods like deli meat and hot dogs were a thing of the past. But there has been some progress. Boar's Head, who run their own deli stores as well as being carried at the deli counter in some groceries, has a couple of options. They have a no salt added roast beef with only 40 mg of sodium per serving and a deluxe roast beef with only 80 milligrams. On the hot dog front, there is also good news. The lowest sodium ones I'd seen until very recently are the soy dogs that you'll find in the organic and vegetarian food section of the refrigerator case. The lowest ones were only 200 mg per dog and there are several brands at or under 300 mg. Trouble is, they don't cook or taste quite right either. They refuse to brown on the grill. The lowest sodium "real" hot dogs were the Hebrew National Light (now called Reduced Fat) ones. They have 360 mg of sodium and taste good, so they can work as an occasional treat for people who can stand that much sodium. But they are long and thin and still don't puff up or brown well. The good news about them is that they are available pretty much throughout the United States and in Ontario. You can find stores on the Hebrew National website at http://www.hebrewnational.com. I've recently found something even better though. Hatfield Meats in Pennsylvania makes a lower sodium frank with only 300 mg that is good. They taste right and they grill beautifully. They are available in stores from Virginia into New England. Check out the stores where they are sold on the Hatfield Quality Meats website at http://www.hqm.com/.
Egg Substitute vs. Real Eggs - You'll notice that many of the recipes call for egg substitute rather than whole eggs. The reason I switched to it was I was also trying to watch my cholesterol, so I trade off the extra 25 mg of sodium for reduced cholesterol. If cholesterol isn't an issue for you, it cheaper and easier to just use whole eggs. I use the Safeway brand egg substitute that is similar to Egg Beaters. It is cheaper and contains a little less sodium. It's basically colored egg whites with some vitamins and minerals. You could also just use egg whites in most of the recipes, but I'm the kind of guy whose Mother did too good of a job teaching me to clean my plate and I have a tough time just throwing the yolks away. The "real" whites have more sodium than the yolks too, by the way, so you don't save much by doing that. You can also buy refrigerated whites without the added chemicals.
Non-dairy Creamer vs. Milk - This is another item like the butter/margarine discussion where I've gone back and forth. Most of the recipes call for skim milk, but some call for non-diary creamer instead. I don't like skim milk, and the 2% that I can stand the taste of has more fat and cholesterol. I haven't found any recipe where creamer is a problem, although it is a bit sweeter. One of the things I've found is that there is often a tradeoff between sodium and fat and cholesterol, particularly in dairy foods. The creamer I had been using is a Safeway house brand, non-fat, non- dairy creamer. It contained no fat or cholesterol and 5 mg of sodium per tablespoon. This put it at about 2/3 the amount of sodium in milk, but much richer flavor than skim milk, which would rate the same in fat and cholesterol. Unfortunately, they no longer carry the no fat version and I have gone back to 2% milk most of the time. The regular version of their creamer lists 0 sodium, although the difference from the non-fat version may not be as great as it appears, since sodium contents less than 5 mgs per serving may be reported as zero. The drawback of course is that you get none of the nutritional benefits of milk ... it is primarily corn syrup and water with some chemicals added. Milk would obviously provide protein and a wide array of vitamins and minerals that the creamer does not. This is not a major concern to me personally because I am careful about getting these nutrients elsewhere, but it is something you should be aware of in making a personal decision to use either the creamer or real milk.

Suburban Updates: Busy Waltham Dining Destination Adds Lots of Extra Space (and Seafood)
And more dining news from outside Boston
There’s more to Massachusetts dining than just Boston proper restaurants. We’re keeping tabs on developments in the Greater Boston area and beyond, including openings, closures, and more. With a focus on Greater Boston suburbs, this piece will be updated on a rolling basis, with the most recent news appearing at the top.
February 22, 2018

Dow industrials drop another 1,000 points as selling spreads
NEW YORK/February 08, 2018(AP)(STL.News) — Stocks plunged again Thursday, and for the second time in four days the Dow Jones industrial average sank more than 1,000 points.
The two best-known stock market indexes, the Dow and the Standard & Poor’s 500, have dropped 10 percent from their all-time highs, set Jan. 26. That means they are in what is known on Wall Street as a “correction,” their first in almost two years.
Stocks fell further and further as the day wore on and suffered their fifth loss in the last six days. Many of the companies that led the market’s gains over the last year have struggled badly in the last week. Those included technology companies, banks, and retailers and travel companies and homebuilders.
After huge gains in the first weeks of this year, stocks started to tumble last Friday after the Labor Department said workers’ wages grew at a fast rate in January. That’s good for the economy, but investors worried it will hurt corporate profits and that rising wages are a sign of faster inflation. It could prompt the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates at a faster pace, which would act as a brake on the economy.
“Far and away the most important things are the fear that the Fed is going to make a mistake, and higher wages are going to cut into margins,” said Scott Wren, senior global equity strategist for Wells Fargo Investment Institute. The worry, he said, is that the Fed will raise interest rates too quickly.
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 1,032.89 points, or 4.1 percent, to 23,860.46. Boeing, Goldman Sachs and Home Depot took some of the worst losses.
The S&P 500, the benchmark for many index funds, shed 100.66 points, or 3.8 percent, to 2,581. It hasn’t been that low since mid-November. The Nasdaq composite fell 274.82 points, or 3.9 percent, to 6,777.16.
Tom Martin, senior portfolio manager with Globalt Investments, said he didn’t see anything specific moving the market lower today, just a continuation of a shift in investor mindset from fear of missing out in a rising market to worry of clocking big losses in a market that’s turned.
“This is going to take longer to work out than people expect,” he said. “In January we talked about fear of missing out. What we have now is what I call fear of getting caught.”
The losses were broad. Eight stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange and 490 of the companies in the S&P 500 took a loss.
The market didn’t get much help Thursday from company earnings reports, several of which disappointed investors. While U.S. companies mostly did well at the end of 2017, a number of them had a weak finish to the year.
Hanesbrands, which makes underwear, T-shirts and socks, reported a smaller profit than investors expected, and its forecast for the current year didn’t live up to analysts’ estimates either. The company also said it will pay $400 million to buy Australian retailer Bras N Things. The stock dropped $2.39, or 10.9 percent, to $19.57.
IRobot, which makes Roomba vacuums, plummeted 32 percent after projected a smaller annual profit than Wall Street was expecting. The stock dropped $28.24 to $59.80.
Twitter had a banner day, soaring 12 percent after turning in a profit for the first time. Its fourth-quarter revenue was also better than expected. The stock rose $3.27 to $30.18.
Online delivery company GrubHub soared after it announced a partnership with Yum Brands, the parent of Taco Bell and KFC. GrubHub will provide the delivery people and technology to let people order food from those restaurants. GrubHub jumped $19.13, or 27.4 percent, to $89.04.
After a sharp loss Wednesday, benchmark U.S. crude lost 64 cents, or 1 percent, to $61.15 a barrel in New York. Brent crude, the international standard for oil prices, gave up 70 cents, or 1.1 percent, to $64.81 per barrel in London.
Stocks in Europe declined and bond yields increased after the Bank of England said could raise interest rates in coming months because of the strong global economy. That also sent the pound higher. Britain’s FTSE 100 fell 1.5 percent and the French CAC 40 lost 2 percent. Germany’s DAX declined 2.6 percent.
Bond prices wobbled and turned higher. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.83 percent from 2.84 percent. Rising yields have made bonds more appealing to some investors compared to stocks. The yield on the 10-year note was as low as 2.04 percent as recently as September.
In other commodities trading, wholesale gasoline remained at $1.77 a gallon. Heating oil lost 1 cent to $1.92 a gallon. Natural gas gave up 1 cent to $2.70 per 1,000 cubic feet.
In Tokyo the Nikkei 225 index rose 1.1 percent. South Korea’s Kospi gained 0.5 percent and the Hang Seng of Hong Kong rose 0.4 percent.

It isn't a spot I eat at too typically, but it is a nice, low-cost choice for these nights when I do not wish to be within the kitchen. We went at opening and the place was immaculate. I had been seeking a place to dine in Halifax and had not previously checked out this place. I'd try books from our library just to strive to find recipes similar to ones I tried in restaurants.

CC “My Spots” list
My Cool Cousin list for Los Angeles:
Santa Anita Park-
A day at the races is always an enriching (sometimes anti- enriching) experience. Santa Anita is a beautiful racetrack with well kept grounds and fun for the whole family (there is a playground at the in-field). Check out the horses, lose some money, enjoy a cigar or few brews in the sun.
Galco’s Old World Grocery-
I love obsessions and how they manifest in the real world. Galco's is no exception. Under one roof you'll find thousands of contemporary and vintage soda labels. It's really fun to walk the aisles and find the most obscure flavor you can. I recommend the classic recipe Dr. Pepper still made with prune juice and cane sugar.
Ricky’s Fish Tacos-
THE BEST fish tacos in LA, Ensenada style. Check his twitter before heading out because the truck moves around. Fish tacos, Shrimp tacos and on occasion, Lobster tacos!
Runyon Canyon Park-
Hollywood is a weird place, the revolving door of Los Angeles. In addition, if you go to Hollywood hoping to get a glimpse of celebrities...it's not going to happen. Instead, go to Runyon Canyon, where beautiful people go to be seen. Fake boobs and wash board abs are the norm on this somewhat steep and beautiful hike. You may run into celebs but more likely Snapchat/Instagram photoshoots. A strange glimpse into the glam world of celebdom.
Highland Park Bowl-
Great place to play fancy bowling. If I were to time travel back to the 50s or whenever bowling was cool I'd imagine I would be in Highland Park Bowl. Good drinks too.
Kindness & Mischief Coffee-
K & M, the most beautiful, friendly cafe in HLP. Their ice coffee is like jet fuel and their mint tea will leave your mouth tingly. Can't recommend enough.
Musso & Frank Grill-
Musso & Franks is as old school as it gets. If you absolutely HAVE to go to Hollywood, dip into this haven where seemingly nothing has changed in 50 years. I suggest getting a quick bite and definitely order the Martini.
Borneo Kalimantan Cuisine-
I can't get enough of the Chewy Noodles. This place is amazing serving Indonesian food, somewhat like a mix of Indian, Thai and Chinese. Cash only, get there early.
Footsies-
Footsies, a place to dance, get drunk, smoke in back, and meet fast women.
Banh Mi My Tho-
Tucked away in a SGV mini mart is Banh Mi My Tho. $4 Banh Mi, tastes like Saigon. Keep in mind this is take out spot, no chairs, no nonsense. SOooo good.
Beer Belly-
Bring some friends to Beer Belly. Its Casual and Laid back but serves some mean food. Great Beer selection for the craft beer head. Duck Confit fries are where its at.
Mama Lu’s Dumpling House-
here is great debate who has the best soup dumplings in SGV. Some say Luscious, some say Din Tai Fung. I say Mama Lu's.
La Chuperia-
These Micheladas are INSANE! Complete with a 32 if you want. Neighborhood dive for local Dodger fans. Great Craft Beer selection and super good nachos, the world's favorite food.
Philippe The Original-
For over 100 years Philippe's has been serving some of the best French Dip sandwiches around. Casual and feels like home. Here is the order: Lamb sandwich double dipped, potato salad, pickled egg, tapioca pudding :-), lemonade.
OB Bear-
Korean Fried Chicken wings are on another level. OB Bear, in my opinion is the best. 1 order wet, 1 order dry, leek pancake, pitcher of Hite, 2 bottles of soju.
Cafe Dulce-
Cafe Dulce only serves the best. Vietnamese Coffee is the best in the city. Wash it down with an amazing Pastry department. Green Tea Donut........
El Tepeyac Cafe- Boyle Heights-
Probably the most famous restaurant in Boyle Heights. Manuel's has been around forever and is famous for the Manuel's Special, a burrito twice the size of your head. Get one with Machaca (shredded beef).
Primera Taza Coffee House-
Low key community based coffee shop. They serve amazing Lonche Sandwiches and source their coffee from single farms and regional areas of Mexico.
Moles La Tia-
Fantastic Mole Poblano and great brunch spot. Chilaquiles with mole is amazing.
Los Angeles Flower Market-
The Flower Market is for the early riser. Adjacent to Downtown and Skid row there is a massive warehouse that supplies all the flowers to every vendor in LA. For a small admission fee one can explore the hundreds of vendors and get a bouquet at wholesale prices. The smell is amazing. Really great resources for wedding planners or anyone planning their own wedding. I'd recommend the Flower Market and then venture over to Santee Alley.
The Santee Alley-
Beware: Some people might get culture shock going to Santee. The streets are packed with small shops slanging their wares to the volume of people seeking good deals. Go buy a Dodger hat, half off Levi's and don't be afraid of the street food.
Indie Brewing Company-
Indie is a badass brewery tucked away in a warehouse. Great IPAs and Kolsch.  The owners support local businesses and use their space to elevate local artists and chefs.
Phat Birds-
Chef Max has been doing Fried Chicken pop ups all over LA for sometime and has a great location in East LA. Try the Nashville spiced white meat, very juicy.
Ramirez Beverage Center-
Over 1200 labels of Craft Beer and beyond. If you are looking for something specific, this is the place that will have it. Raminez is so big they give you a discount if you don't mind beer being warm.
Mariscos Jalisco-
Don't be scared. I know it's near the projects, I know seafood from a truck sounds weird, but trust me this place is great on a hot day. Go to Ramirez beverage center, get a beer in a paper bag, and get Shrimp Tacos/Tostada Mixta from Maricos Jalisco.
In-N-Out Burger-
Forget everything else. Go die in a hole if you don't stop at In-N-Out when visiting this beautiful concrete city. Get the 3x3, the world's most perfect burger. Bread:Meat ratio rivals Galileo's finest discovery . If you a G, extra onion. You'll find many around town but this one is near the airport.
