Loriâs New Troll Lore
So me and my friend took very different approaches to rewriting the lore of these fantasy races. While Sal had the approach of making all the canon lore be born from in universe racism and misunderstandings, while creating the real lore of what these people really are instead of how theyâre perceived by external groups (which is a fucking amazing btw)
I decided to go with a simpler approach of taking the very basic of what is canon to the universe and then reworking it so that it becomes its own unique thing, free of the usual yikes.
So what do we know for sure about troll canon. Well they can regenerate like crazy and can only be killed by fire or acid. They have amazing dark vision, at the price of being sensitive to bright lights (apparently thatâs not in their stat sheet, but itâs referenced in lore). Theyâre a matriarchal society (weird how only evil cultures are matriarchal in D&D. I wonder why that would be the case), lead by shamans. And theyâre sorta kinda giants, because they were born of the demigod Vaprak, who was born from... well when The All Father pulled a Zeus with a sorceress (Yes, depicting a child born from this kind of shit as inherently monstrous and evil is profoundly fucked up)
As you can see this shit is just full of yikes, but there are still a lot that can be salvaged here and put to good use creating an interesting story, so letâs see what I managed to make with all this
(I added a keep reading link, because this shit got loooooooooong)
~~~
Fire is the greatest enemy of Troll kind. It blinds them, it burns their flesh and it reminds them all of their own mortality, to this terrifying force of nature they show equal parts fear and respect. For in the hands of the old and wise, fire can still be used to make grand things.
Of course most troll children arenât born with this inherent knowledge, so little theyâre exposed to anything that could ever do them real harm. Young trolls have this sense that theyâre immortal, invincible. When two trolls fight they could suffer terrible wounds that would kill even the mightiest of human warriors a dozen times over, and still get up and laugh it off.
From this two things can be gathered about troll kind. First that their disdain for armor and fancy clothes, comes entirely from practical reasons. What point is there in wasting resources in equipment that will get completely destroyed in a quick scuffle.
Second, that when it comes to real conflict, who wins is not the strongest troll, but the smartest. In the absence of fire or acid, the only real way to best a troll is by outsmarting them or outrunning them. This is one of the many reasons why it is wisdom, and not strength, that makes for a great leader.Â
It is also wisdom that allows for some trolls to work terrifying force of fire. Those who can treat that force with respect and who have fully understood what it means to hold in their hands the only thing that can kill their own people.
Still fire is very rarely used. They do not need it as a light source, they do not need it to cook their food or to heat their bodies, and they have very little use for metal tools. Fire in troll culture serves only one use, as a funeral pyre.
In the rare occasion when a troll truly dies, their body is burned and their ashes returned to the world. To many young trolls this is the first time theyâre shown the destructive force of fire and learn of their own mortality. But in a way this ritual is less about how a troll dies, but more about how a troll lives on.
From those pyres banquets are prepared, their ashes are spread and seeds are planted where they were scattered. In this way a trollâs death is simply a means for them to truly become immortal.
In recent years metal tools have also been forged from these pyres, as more and more other cultures push into troll land, the more they must protect themselves from those who so carelessly brandish flame and magic.
Of course there are always grand tales about these tools, both of the people who brandished them and the people who became them. There are legends of an old troll queen whose corpse refused to burn away, keeping her pyre burning from 7 days and from that fire many grand weapons are forged - some hich are said to still carry her will.
Or perhaps the tale of the old wise woman who used a shield and a hammer to create an avalanche, thwarting a conquering army and humbling their warlord. Itâs said that the shield forged from her pyre could stop even the acid breath of a black dragon.
Those are the story of the great troll people, of their strength and their wisdom, carried on in the world around us and in the many stories of their children.
~~~
Okay so that was a lot. One last bit that I wanted to write down is how they relate to the 13 classes of D&D. Gonna keep these quick and simple, because jesus christ Iâve been writing this shit for over an hour
Artificer: One wouldnât expect them to have many artificers, but youâd be surprised with how much they can achieve without the use of metal. Ingenuity and cleverness goes a long way for Artificers and trolls have plenty of that. Though they do tend to prefer Alchemy as their field of study.
Barbarian: Rarer than most people think. Unyielding rage will only ever get you so far when fighting other trolls and their rage canât do much to protect them from magical fire. Those that do exist lean towards the Path of the Ancestral Guardian
Bard: The living memory of the troll people. They retell the grand tales of their ancestors and share their wisdom with new generations. Many who follow this tradition lean towards the College of Lore
Cleric: Trolls prefer to worship their ancestors more than they worship gods. The one exception being Vaprak themself, as theyâre the oldest of troll ancestors. Clerics do not have a particular preference towards any domain, as thereâs certainly at least one great troll out there with a tale relating to each of them.
Druid: The most common of spell casters and wise leaders in troll communities. Though they may join any circle, the Circle of the Moon seems to attract particularly few of them, as their bodies far outmatch those of most natural beasts.
Fighter: Where thereâs a fight to be had, there are fighters to fight it, troll culture is no exception.Â
Monk: Troll martial arts tend to center around grappling and pinning their foe, a victory by submission is often the best one can hope to achieve when dueling another of their kind. Still there are some who learn the ways of the Monk and how to channel their Ki to make their bodies even deadlier
Paladin: There are no classic paladin orders to be found among trolls, but as rare as they might be, there are still individuals who would dedicate so much of themselves to a cause that something out there - ancestor or god - is compelled to land them their aid.
Ranger: No society would have ever gone that far without rangers, hunters and guides, to lead them through the natural world. Trolls are no different.
Rogue: It may seem silly to think of something as large as a troll sneaking around, but itâs this sort of thinking that makes such clever people the deadliest and fiercest among their kind.
Sorcerer: Sometimes magic simply manifests itself to a person. Elves, humans, orcs and trolls alike, magic flows through them all and can awaken just as easily in any of them.
Warlock: Most trolls who seek this path are too young to understand the consequences of theyâre doing. Perhaps they have never seen a funeral pyre being lit and are confident of their own immortality, or perhaps they have and are doing everything within their power to avoid such fate
Wizard: Only the old and wizened are ever allowed to take such a path, for such terrifying power cannot be taught to one who would use it carelessly, and far too many tales were ended far too soon by a single stray spell.
AND WE ARE FINALLY DONE. Hope you enjoyed this absurdly long read and please feel free to offer me feed back and your own unique takes on other fantasy races. Please do keep your advice constructive. I know I probably fucked up some bits back there, but nothing here is set in stone and a lot can be rewriten and changed as necessary

DAO really was the best game, the lore the ability to absolutely wreck shit, the fact that they didnt do that bullshit âall sides are greyâ and clearly showed oppression. I think of my warden, an elven mage, and wonder how sheâll be rewritten more than anything.
right like!!!! i love each dragon age game with my whole heart and they all have super special places in said heart, but origins handles a lot of the social problems really well, or at least from the perspective that i play it as (also an elven mage!)
the rest iâm putting under the cut bc holy shit i can talk abt dragon age a lot. also nothing is proofred. iâm so sorry this got so long i hear âbiowareâ and âgrey moralityâ and i go wild
(pls talk to me abt dragon age.....)
(also please donât reblog this!!)
like i understand da2 having a type of grey-morality thing bc the final battle was choosing between the mages and the templars (tho imo they couldâve done better than âthe mages hate us bc we keep them locked in a tower and there are multiple accounts of us abusing them and therefore some of them turn to blood magic so therefore we should kill all of themâ but still, in a setting like that where the Main End Game Choice was mages vs. templars, then that is understandable)
(but also i havenât played da2 in a couple years so maybe itâs more nuanced than that)
but inquisition! itâs weird bc inq has a super special place in my heart. iâve played it 6 or 7 times to completion, not counting the other times i got 20/30 hours into it before external forces distracted me. inq is overall the game i think abt the most, most of my playthroughs average over 100 hours, itâs the only game that i have all the dlcs for, for me itâs the easiest to replay, and yet thereâs so much that frustrates me abt it! like, iâm gonna avoid talking abt the actual parts of the writing that bother me, bc that can be itâs own standalone thing, but imo it felt like they never actually solidified what actually caused the mage/templar war? there are those that say anders started it (seems likely), then there are those who talk abt fiona leading the rebel mages in the war? and there, of course, is the âthe templars have done wrong but so have they mages and therefore youâre shamed either way for what you doâ like i Get what theyâre trying to do, trying to encourage players to explore their options and really delve into their own moral values of the game and not just adhere to what the game says, but idk the way they always went abt it always rubbed me some type of wrong
i think part of it is bc, when people mention circle mages turning to blood mages and demons and such like that, it was always framed as âah these evil mages!â and not â[if these are circle mages] most likely their want for freedom pushed them to thatâ
does that make it right? no, not necessarily! look at uldred from dao! imo, he was wrong! i donât like the circle and my warden herself has a complicated relationship with it, but i like that you can say âhey! this is wrong!â without legitimate plot-based âbut what if it isnât?â
of course there will always be companions who push for the more chaotic/harsh choices (morrigan is the one i have the most experience with giving me disapproval for being what i think is nice) (still love her tho), but i think dao handled âokay, look at the big picture, and really think abt what hill u want to die onâ stance well
and then thereâs the way the mage/templar thing is handled in inquisition vis a vis companions. specifically cullen. and, listen, i as a player have a very complicated relationship with cullen and my heros do too lmao. and i really donât want to get into the nuances of that bc that can 1) turn into a fight i donât feel like having and 2) can be itâs own discussion, but basically, from my own perspective, heâs a well-written character who makes for a good antag to a mage-siding hawke in da2 bc of how pro-templar/anti-mage he is. again, donât agree with any of it (honestly da2 alone puts me on the âokay fuck thisâ level w/ his character), but it does offer an extreme that is interesting to see. origins is more complicated bc in a game not directly stepped in mage/templar and also a game that stems from 6 different origin stories, itâs very easy to be a non-mage and be like âwhy do i care abt this guyâ (if you get what iâm saying? like i got immediately invested in saving the mages bc my first warden was a circle mage so i was very put off by being told to kill all of them, as compared to if i played a non-mage origin and didnât really have that background knowledge). but overall, origins and da2 puts cullen on the âpro-templars, mages are more dangerous than they are good side.â and then inquisition is where things get interesting!!
and, for a quick ref, iâm very into getting invested in my characters and really figuring out their morals and what they would actually do, or at least think, so dai becomes interesting bc i play as another elven mage who has never stepped foot in a circle and never will. so, bc of that, i play him as naturally more inclined to not initially Think abt cullenâs past like as a templar bc, as a dalish mage, i hc that he does not know what actually goes on in circles (as compared to my warden, a circle mage, and my hawke, an apostate) (but i hc that, overtime, as he has more and more experiences with templars, he becomes more cognizant of that) (but bioware doesnât give me the option to just dictate everything my camris lavellan is thinking akjsjkdjk)
and dai-cullen, imo, is actually very interesting! and, tbh, i do have to give it to bioware. i feel like iâm abt to say an unironic controversial opinion, and i feel like iâve already talked abt the nuances of all of this, but i do think dai did well at reworking cullenâs character. however, i feel like that was also done to feed into the grey-ness of the mage/templars. and, imo, i think they almost did well at actually making cullen show regret for how he treated mages. almost. again, i think thereâs a lot of nuance! bc we do see him show some type of regret for how he treated a mage!warden (if he said all that shit like âall these peopleâs blood are on your handsâ if u talk abt not wanting to kill innocent mages) and we do see him step away from templar life (that is, if you tell him to stop taking lyrium)
but!!!! thereâs One Thing that puts a thorn in this, and itâs that cullen says something along the lines of, âmeredith wasnât all wrong, she had reasonâ like bitch!!! no matter what side you choose in da2, you fucking fight meredith!!! sheâs wanted to kill innocent mages/make them tranquil even before anders blew up the chantry!!! meredith was all wrong!! she was evil!!!!! she was objectively a harmful person!!!!!!!!! bioware really makes this bitch the final boss of da2 and then has the audacity to say âbut maybe she wasnât all badâ in dai like WHERE IS THIS FOR ORSINO??? ORSINO ISNâT ALL BAD, IS HE???????? OH BUT HE IS BC HE RESORTED TO SUDDEN BLOOD MAGIC IN THE LAST TEN MINUTES OF THE GAME, AS COMPARED TO MEREDITH WHO WAS A DANGER FOR THE ENTIRE FINAL ACT and i digress but the fact that bioware is trying to redeem cullen but also showing that he still sympathizes with a woman who 1) turned against the templars and 2) Literally Everything She Did To The Mages always makes me âhmmmm are u really trying tho :/â
also tho one thing iâm actually not the biggest fan of is that cullen is like âoh i knew hawke in passing........ knew varric in passing.............â meanwhile letâs just cut to everything that happened at kirkwall. this is my own opinion bc i see varric as hawkeâs #1 but i personally think that at least half of the comraderie varric and cullen sorta-kinda-had in inq was varric testing the waters of âokay what is cullen going to be like if and when hawke shows upâ
also tho i will say a hot-take of mine is that if cullen gets to be redeemed by bioware, then i want something for anders, too, but i doubt bioware would do something so clearly pro-mage. but it could be two sides of the extreme! extremist templar gets redemption, extremist mage does, too! come on, bioware, show your grey morality
(again, i think itâs interesting what they did with cullen in dai and does give some sympathetic light but i also do think the reworking of his character was working towards biowareâs moral-greyness agenda with dragon age. not that thatâs necessarily a terrible thing, i understand them wanting some nuance, but itâs the way they do it. like, you can show bad templars and bad mages and still not have âbut who is really the bad guy? the oppressors or the oppressed? who is it really?â)
(and also just bc i feel like i need to put my own player claim in this, my opinion on cullen is complicated and also iâm gonna be completely forth-right with u, dear anon, i appreciate cullen in inquisition but, as a whole, he can be terrible to ur warden in dao (thatâs not me being shifty it literally just depends on the choice you make in broken circle) and in da2 heâs a nightmare, so bioware had to do a lot of legwork in dai) (tbh tho in my personal-player opinion, if i was to ever romance cullen in inq, itâs not gonna be with a mage)
god this got so out of hand anon iâm so sorry you probably didnât want this messy essay but i just love talking abt dragon age!!! i think abt it a lot and i have five years worth of headcanons and i have a family tree set up for my surana/lavellan bc of some bullshit i pulled and also!!!! biowareâs writing can get so frustrating but i also think itâs so interesting to pull apart and discuss bc i think the bioware has actually shifted from pro-mage (origins) to neutral-mage (da2 kinda) to anti-mage (dai) and i feel like So Many Choices with characters and their plots reveal that!!! so itâs a frustrating agenda but i also just love dragon age so much that i canât help but get excited and talk abt it!!!
like, as all things, i do believe there are times when grey morality does work, but, at least from a mage-siding perspective, it hasnât really landed well for dragon age. bc, and i donât want to drag in real-life scenarios bc i feel like it would be incredibly inappropriate of me to use any oppressed minority as a comparison for a fantasy world, but itâs the age-old thing of people saying the shitty âbut the oppressed fight back and therefore theyâre just as bad as the oppressors!â and thatâs like....... not how it works.
but also youâve caught me in a wonderful mood so i feel like, if i was in a bad mood, this would be a lot more âand fucking bioware canât make a goddamn decision on what side they actually support so instead most of the companions are gonna made rude remarks abt you supporting mages and the ones that support you are seen as distrustful and fuck this and fuck thatâ but i think that is the joy of loving something with youâre whole heart and also saying âthere are so many things abt this that piss me off and so many things that i would changeâ
and also!!!! ik bioware probably killed my warden so like rip electra surana but i would love for the warden to make an appearance in da4 as a temporary companion/advisor. but! but!!!!!! i also donât know how much i trust bioware with my âelven mage who is alistairâs mistress and preferred the mages and wanted to free the circles and etc etc etcâ bc... idk how to explain it? like, i donât want them taking my warden and putting words in her mouth that go against choices i meticulously made in dao
#im ending this now#i went thru like 8 different discussion points im so sorry#im also not tagging this as d/a bc i try not to start fandom shit here#not for any moral reason#i just dont feel like arguing w/ strangers on the internet#i like discussing tho!!! like genuinely#also im sorry this conversation became so cullen-centric#i just feel like he is who bioware puts a lot of their moral-greyness in#answered#Anonymous

Welp I finished Psychedelica of the Ashen Hawk and my biggest comment is that this game has more plot holes than swiss cheese.
*insert more shifty eye uncomfortable emojis*Â
What was...... that convoluted mess of a game I just played? Like this is reaching Zero Escape level of plot holes and âwow the writer clearly has no idea what the hell they are doingâ. I donât even know where Iâm gonna start breaking down the amount of issues. Lots of spoilers beneath.
My favourite order is prob Levi > Elric > Lugus > Hugh > Eiar > Aria > Tee > Lord > Olgar > Lawrence >>>> Lavan >>>>>>>>>> Francisca
For starters, this felt like less of an otome game and more of a gang bang 5p fuck pile orgy. Seriously. One moment, Eiar is making out with Lavan, the next moment, Eiar is dreaming of sleeping with Lugus and wakes up panicking because âoh no! I think Iâm in love with Lugus!â. If the romance is âthe heroine being passed among all the guysâ, Iâd rather there be no romance at all. It felt more like a fucking badly written reverse harem anime than an otome. I had this problem with PBB but boy it was not this level of bad.Â
None of the characters really develop, none of the relationships really develop. Letâs not even get started on the fact that 2/4 of your love interests are your adopted brothers who are actually your blood cousins. At first I enjoyed Lugusâs enchantment with Eiar but it doesnât develop beyond that. Why is Lugus even in love with Eiar? His feelings never felt like anything beyond captivation, and the same applied for Eiar. Why is Lavan in love with Eiar? Because heâs some gross nii-chan lusty pervert whoâs in love with his adopted sister??? IDK.Â
The only one who genuinely felt like he loved Eiar was Levi, and even Leviâs character was butchered with the whole âyeah Iâm a serial killer who enjoys inflicting pain onto other peopleâ. Even if you blame it on the ~magical stone~, the revelation was like a slap in the face and it was so disconnected w everything we knew of Levi. The writers clearly didnât know if they wanted to write him as a character whoâs sadistic and ruthless, or if they wanted to write him as a character who was manipulated by his mother into becoming her assassin through abuse + gaslighting. The writers aimed for both, and failed miserably at both.Â
Speaking of Francisca, the fact that Francisca is an evil bitch is literally NEVER brought up lol???? Like when Levi admits that Francisca was using him as an assassin, Eiar and Lavan are shocked but.......... thatâs it. Especially in Leviâs ending, the fact that thereâs never a hint of acknowledgement that Francisca was abusing him is jarring to say the least. Thereâs never any real discussion of how Eiar and the Wolf brothers feel about Francisca after they find out what she did to Aria and Olgar. Like wow we just found out our mom is a piece of shit, let us NEVER DISCUSS THIS or have ANY heart to heart talk about this EVER. Because that will give our characters perfect closure! The fact that Eiar never returns to her real name, the name given to her by her mother, also kind of bothers me.
Franciscaâs character was honestly butchered along with Levi after everything she did to Aria was revealed. "That evil slut is taking away all the men in my life!â is not a good enough motive to burn a completely innocent woman to death, sorry. Her love for her sons felt shallow and her love for Eiar felt like she was just trying to show up Aria. I canât find any redeemable thing about her and her character just ended up being at to the bottom of the barrel along with Rika and Mejojo. The only emotion I got out of the whole dumpster fire between the parents was âwow Aria deserved so much fucking betterâ.
Now lets get started with all the fucking plot holes this game has.Â
For starters, if the whole town is actually Psychedelica and everyone lost their memories, it makes no sense for Francisca to be the only one who remembers killing Aria, and thereâs never any indication to confirm whether or not Francisca is actually aware the fact that everyone is in Psychedelica.
Speaking of Aria, that scene where Aria is shown to be slumbering in the abyss and stops the kids from completing the Kaleido Via makes no sense either. For starters, why is Aria even in the abyss? She died in the real world, so her soul should have moved onto the afterlife, or she should have been trapped in the Psychedelica town too. Actually, the fact that she isnât trapped makes no sense. Olgar activated the Kaleido Via with a desire to see Aria again (similar to Hikage with Usagi), so it makes no sense for Ariaâs soul to not be drawn to the town if the town was created through Aprus and Olgarâs collective desires.
I donât really understand why tf Aria would want to stop the kids from completing the Kaleido Via when thatâs literally the only method to free the souls of the town so they continue into the afterlife? Itâd make sense for Aria to stop them if their souls would go into the abyss, but again, itâs explicitly stated that your soul will only end up in the abyss if you die in Psychedelica. And again, the fact that Aria is supposedly in the abyss makes no sense in the first place. The scene with the kids and the kaleido via was so out of place it was ridiculous. How do you not remember a scene where a shard flew into your friendâs eye and caused her to bleed everywhere?
Moving on, itâs literally never explained what the hell is up with Eiarâs red eye. It can be assumed that Eiar inherited it from Aria who really was a witch, but then that doesnât explain why only one of Eiarâs eyes glow red and not both.Â
MOVING ON, who the fuck is Hugh and literally what is his damn role in the story. Like I looove character types like him bc and Iâm a huge sucker for âmysterious observer characters who act as the storyâs narratorâ not to mention heâs beautiful but Hughâs origins and role remains wishy washy from start to end and his character ends up being a plot device to give 30 minute info dumps on the plot. Like, heâs the dumb dead bird that lived with Ashen Witch (whom I assume is Ariaâs mother), and after heâs killed by Aprus, Ashen Witch... releases his... soul? So he becomes... a mindless traveler traveling between the different Psychedelica worlds...? I guess??? Itâs implied that Hugh is the one who gave Hikage the kaleidoscope but again, how or why he did so is never explained either. I also dunno wtf is up with his ending where Eiar just magically turns into a butterfly and whooshes away with Hugh.
I still have no idea what was with that scene where he chats with Aria about the stories in the Links ending, and I definitely donât know what was with that scene where Aria talks with Eiar and decides to name her non born child off of her (who is the same Eiar). Like what?? are dreams and timelines converging or something??? No clue.
Also. What the fuck is the deal with Lawrence and Elric??? THATâS NEVER EXPLAINED? Like yes, I know that much that theyâre Kagiha and Hikage respectively but literally wtf is Kagiha and Hikage doing in Aprus/Olgarâs Psychedelica. Lawrence clearly retains his memories as Kagiha, but Hikage never does and itâs like ??? why?? Also why is Usagi in a form of a rabbit in this world? WHO KNOWS. I was just so tired of this game that by the time I was half way done all the endings I just wanted it to be over already.
No joke, I seriously thought that PAA took place in the real world where Hikage was born and raised because of the medieval/historical setting and weâd learn more about the lore of the manor and the kaleidoscope. Honestly though, I wish it was because it prob would have made this game a million times better. If the game was split between a âwolvesâ and âhawksâ path like BWS, it probably would have fixed some of the problems with the terrible romance.
The one good thing I will say about this game is that itâs the first otome game localization from Aksys Iâve played that didnât give me a migraine because of no proof readers. There were some issues with wrong tenses being used but other than that it wasn't littered with typos like literally EVERY OTHER otome theyâve localized so far lmao.
Presentation wise, this game is beautiful. The sprite work is beautiful and the cgs are amazing. I loved the character designs for all the guys like A++ pretty boys. Unfortunately, the OST really lacked in comparison to PBB this time around. This game had so much potential but everything just fell apart the further and further you go and thatâs what makes it even more disappointing. Itâs setting and premise were a million times more interesting than PBB. Like medieval setting? Check. Feud between two clans with the heroine caught in between? Check. It had everything I loved and I was confident I was going to love it but the execution was just so terribad that I donât love it. I canât love it. I do love all the characters sans Lavan and Francisca though and I think they all deserved better. They deserved better writing. They deserved better development. I wish I could just rework this entire game from the ground up because thatâs how frustrated I am with it lmao.
TLDR; I am very very disappointed with this game and itâs such a shame because I loved Black Butterfly to bits and pieces but this game ended up being a convoluted mess of bad and inconsistent writing. PBB had a rather weak premise with an uninteresting and incredibly cliche âall childhood friends in love w the heroine and thereâs ~tragedy~!â. However, it had a very interesting and well written lore and universe while simultaneously being clean and easy to understand so it didnât make any unnecessary loop holes for itself. PAA was the complete opposite. I enjoyed the connections this game made to the first game, but that was pretty much it.Â
anyway wow that was long, this is the first time Iâve played a game where all I can do is go on a tangent about all the problems Iâve had with it. Hopefully other people enjoyed this game more than I did HAHA.
