a/n: idk how this ended up being so long lmao whoops,, I do hope you enjoy it though!

it was your first year at college. you ran through the halls of what was now the fifth building you’d checked for your first class. finally spotting the three digit number you memorized from your schedule, you rushed through the doors, hoping you’d make it just in time.

you didn’t make it very far though. as you walked in, you were stopped short by the presence of a tall, dark haired boy already being scolded by your statistics professor, who made a comment about your tardiness on top of his. after enduring your professors wrath, you hastily sat down in one of the far back rows of the room, losing sight of the boy who walked in before you. a few minutes after you settled, you heard a low voice behind you, “hey. I didn’t catch your name.” turning back, you came face to face with the boy again, who was slightly leaning in as he waited for your response. you hesitantly responded, earning a nod and his casual introduction. “cool, you can call me rin.”

you and rin grew inseparably close after that day. your gatherings were initially limited to the classes and lunches you shared, but when second semester rolled around, you’d began going over to each other’s places, hanging out outside of school, and eventually talking everyday without fail. you found yourself growing more comfortable with rin than you’d ever felt around anyone. he quickly became your closest friend.

it was one of the nights rin was sleeping over at your place. your roommate went home for the weekend, and you’d thought it’d be fun for the two of you to have a movie night — something you’d grown accustomed to. not even fifteen minutes in and the two of you found yourselves in a deep conversation, the movie nothing more than comforting noise background to the words of your best friend. you’d gotten to the topic of relationships and in your cathartic state, you’d express how touch starved you’d felt for the past few months. you didn’t intend to admit it, but rin immediately pulled you in for a hug without any questions. it was platonic. it was meant to be platonic...

but you found yourself enjoying his closeness in a way that was different. he found himself enjoying the heat radiating off your skin, wanting to feel more of it. you pulled away, hoping to escape what you decided was to be a one-time thought. but rin looked into your eyes, drowning you in the feeling of him.

and as he began to pull you closer, his eyes trained on your lips, you stopped listening to the voice of reason screaming inside. you let him kiss you. and you kissed him back.

his soft kisses grew needier as his movements grew bolder. he kissed along the trace of your collarbone, working his way around your body, aching to explore every foreign piece of you. and with every okay you gave him, every time you looked into his eyes with the same hunger he possessed, he found himself falling deeper.

it was the next morning, and when you woke up to an unusual emptiness beside you, you remembered the past nights events. rin always woke up after you when he slept over. and if for some reason he didn’t, he’d scroll through his phone waiting for you to wake up.

your worries were put to rest when you saw him walk in with apology pancakes.

apology pancakes became a tradition after the first time you and rin got into an argument. you decided to make him pancakes, knowing they were one of his favourite meals, and apologize to him the morning after your fight. since then, every time something went wrong in your friendship, apology pancakes came in order. it was a signal of peace. a reminder of how much one meant to the other. any mistakes were always forgiven.

“it doesn’t have to be weird.” he said, sitting next to you on the bed. “please, we don’t have to make what happened weird.” you nodded in agreement. and decidedly, things went back to normal. but it didn’t last very long.

naturally, there was a party the next weekend. rin asked if you’d wanted to go, mentioning the host’s house had a pool. he came to your apartment to pick you up, as he usually did when the two of you hung out.

it was the same as any other weekend. so why couldn’t he keep his eyes off you as he walking in your room, watching you finish the touch ups of your look? his eyes graced the trace of your figure and he couldn’t help the quiet “wow” that slipped out of his mouth.

when you looked at him, you found yourself thinking back to the night you shared. the same heat was present in his gaze. he couldn’t help himself, and neither could you.

you didn’t end up going to the party.

it became conventional that when either of you needed a quick fix, you’d call the other. your arrangement was nothing more than an extension to your friendship. you’d discussed the possibility but concluded your desire for each other was simply for sexual purposes. there was no romantic aspect in your relationship. and it was true. you both believed it was true.

it wasn’t until you noticed the changes. a few months into your “fwb” ordeal, and things were still going smoothly. except, the kisses were sweeter. rin’s touch was softer. you found yourself wanting to give him a quick kiss at the most random of times. your last thought at night, as you drifted to sleep would always be him, whether he was next to you or not. despite his own actions, you told yourself it was one-sided. you needed to get over it.

but rin noticed it too. he found himself wanting to spend the entire day with you, in favour of his usual alone time. he caught himself thinking about the way your lips felt on his neck, and how it was his favourite feeling. when he was with you, his hands found themselves rushing to your hair, wanting to hold you closer to him, instead of their usual path to your thighs.

it was another movie night. you both sat comfortably on his living room couch, watching a comedy you’ve both seen one too many times. your head rested on his shoulder as you laughed softly at the tv. you felt him pull you closer, which usually meant one thing.

“I thought we were just chilling tonight?” you looked up to him, wondering if he changed his mind.

“can’t I just hold you?” he defended, with a little too much sincerity.

“yeah I guess..” you trailed off, not wanting to begin an argument. but after couple minutes, the bitter thoughts still plagued your mind.

“actually no. you can’t.”

he raised his brow in confusion, prodding you to explain.

“you can’t just hold me like that. because that’s not what we are. and we can’t be that-“

“why not?”

you looked up at him in shock. he knew why. your friendship was more important than the risk. why was he playing dumb?

“look.. I know we’ve been scared to explore whatever this is between us. but I can’t pretend that I don’t think about you every minute of the day. and when I see you, it’s like nothing else matters, because I get to spend the time with you, my favourite person. I know that we’re both scared a relationship will ruin our friendship, but our friendship hasn’t been the same ever since that first night. and I don’t regret a minute of it, because falling in love with you, has made every moment of doubt worth the idea of being loved by you.”

you felt every fear you developed over the past few months dissipate with his words. you eased yourself once again in the feeling of him, in a way that felt new, and trusting.

it was the day you admitted to yourself that it was okay to love your best friend, no matter how much you wanted to tell yourself otherwise. it was the day you allowed yourself to be loved by rin.

“I don’t think it’s undoable,” Robb tells him, if anything because he can hear that he sounds as if his sister didn’t let him have a relationship with Tommen, maybe he wants to, and if he wants to bring him to Tarth where he’s supposed to go following the woman he loves or so it seems, it’s not hard to imagine why he’s asking this. “He’s young and he hasn’t been anything like Joffrey as far as we know, we can just say that if he gives up any claim on the throne he can go with you, as you would be his closest relative willing to house him, and I highly doubt a Targaryen king would want you in his guard. But you were planning to leave it anyway, weren’t you?”

“His Grace is very perceptive,” Lannister says, sounding relieved. “Very well then. I — thank you,” he says, and then he turns on his back and leaves the room as well.

Robb sure as the seven hells had not foreseen this turn of events, but he’s not going to be the person complaining about it.

“If he is thanking you I guess anything might happen at this point,” Theon says after neither of them speaks for a long moment, and Robb has to laugh at that, some. It was funny, after all.

EYE COLOUR - sky blue  

HAIR STYLE / COLOUR -  long, pale blonde, almost white, cascades over her back and shoulders.

HEIGHT -  5′10″ (  178 cm )

CLOTHING STYLE -  very professional and well dressed when she’s working. cream suits are a favorite. everything fits her very well. she is every inch the beautiful, poised, professional woman. at home, she’s very bohemian. lots of florals, a bit more casual, wears sandals if she wears shoes at all. honestly, a flower crown wouldn’t look amiss here. at formal events, she sort of blends the two. she likes wearing dresses, though as i stated for her work wardrobe, she also adores a good suit. light and flowy is the name of the game here.

BEST PHYSICAL FEATURE -  her eyes and her smile, hands down. they’re both so warm and loving, you can’t help but be drawn in.

david rose + the pan flag colors this is probably one of the hardest and most rewarding gifsets i’ve ever made!! each step of making this took a really long time, from finding scenes that fit, either for colors or just moment where david was still (which i might say are very few lmao but same), to the coloring which was also very hard to achieve, especially because only the background has to be in color and sometimes even just one frame can fuck up the whole thing (like for example if the character moves too much you’d either have frames where the character’s skin/clothes/whatever are the bg color or frames where the bg color isn’t there and it’s hard) needless to say it’s a gifset i love a lot because hashtag representation and seeing all the lovely comments in the tags legitimately makes my day 🤧🤧 if i had to change something i might look harder for a different scene to use for the second gif because it doesn’t look as good as the other ones but 🤷 + bonus patrick + the gay flag colors because it took even LONGER than this one but it somehow looks worse lmao

rosa diaz + ha ha ha from my b99 rewatch series, this is a relatively simple gifset but it took me so damn long i honestly don’t know if there is an easier version to achieve that “scrolling” text effect but i really wanted it to look like this and i could not find ANYTHING for it online, so i literally just made like 50, or however many frames there were, text layers and placed each of them so it would look like the text was being “typed” i guess it was HELL but i love it and i think it looks dope

schitt’s creek + c.s. lewis quote oh boy i hope you’re ready for a long ass commentary on this one first of all i would like to blame @the-rosebud-motel for sharing this quote on discord and putting this idea in my head it is literally all her fault!! second of all, this gifset took me a bit because i had initially started with a different idea but it then became what it is now and i while i wish it looked a little different i am happy with the results!! i’m gonna put the commentary under read more because this is getting very long and i have A Lot To Say, if you wanna stay get ready to shed some tears because i did while making this LMAO  hope you decide to read it because i spent a lot thinking about ways to make this perfect, but if you don’t wanna read it all that’s okay, thank you for reading all the way down here!!

okay so first of all, in my head this gifset is divided into three parts, the first one being the first 3 gifs, the second one being the middle one, and the third one being the last 3 gifs. in the next paragraph i’ll explain the Parallels™ and why each scene works for that specific moment or line and you’ll understand why i have this little ~division~ part one: gif #1 is one of the very first scenes of the show. the roses have lost everything and you can see the portrait being taken away in the background, a symbol of their wealth and life being gone. (you can’t change the beginning)

gif #2 is the roses staring at the town sign in 1x03. they’re shocked and weirded out by it and they just got to this town and the sign is a symbol of schitt’s creek being “gross” or “weird” etc

gif #3 is from 1x04, johnny and moira struggle with connecting with their kids and believe they are bad parents (as the title of the episode suggests), and so attempt to play a game of two truths and one lie to try to bond with david and alexis (needless to say, it doesn’t go well)

part two: gif #4 is from happy anniversary, the season 2 finale. the roses dance together as a family, they admit they love each other and have what is arguably the first happy family moment of the series. It’s a turning point for them, it’s their new beginning (but you can start from where you are)

part three: gif #5 is a parallel to gif 3: johnny and moira take their time to get a cake for David and alexis’ big days (they’ve done the best they can!!!!!). this time the effort is real and appreciated!!!

gif #6 is a parallel to gif 2: the roses are staring at another sign, the shining new “rosebud motel”. this time, they’re happy and excited, as the sign symbolises their full commitment to the town, that is now their home, and to stevie who is by now unofficially a rose as well 😭

gif #7 is a parallel to gif 1: the portrait is there and for a while they thought that’s what they wanted, a symbol of their status as wealth, but as moira says in the same episode “it doesn’t fit, and not just physically. we aren’t those people anymore. [...]” . this time when the portrait is left behind, it is not because it’s taken away from them, but because they are the ones to walk away from it: this is where the roses fully decide to leave their old lives behind and accept all the love and happiness that schitt’s creek has given them. the portrait, symbol of their old lives, is not what they need anymore, and actually it’s not what they have needed for a very long time. they walk together back to the motel, laughing at a joke moira made, and fully embracing the gift that has been given to them, a chance to rewrite their own story (and change the ending)

the entire gifset is then tied with the progression of colors, going from an almost black and white to colorful and vibrant. this is of course to symbolize how they went from being desperate and depressed to happy and loving BUT the beginning is not “just” the beginning of the series aka them losing everything, because the sadness and desperation was there before they lost everything even if they didn’t realize at first. so to quote the first episode, schitt’s creek was the roses’ saving grace, except not in the way it was intended in 1x01. sure it was shelter for when they lost all their money, but it was so much more than that, because it made them a family and gave them all they really needed, which isn’t money or wealth but kindness and love.

it’s been long since isolde has regarded her body as something to revel ( or agonize over ). she likes the ambiguity of her features, how it tricks the general molding of the english, and ventures into marginal territories, burgundian, southern, traitorous. not insecure per se, since she inhabits all aspects of womanhood with ease, all but one: childbearing. she struggles against fertility, rather than towards it: the idea of giving birth has discomfited and unnerved her ever since she was young. it only increases tenfold with age, and so the duchess longs for the time when such worries will be rendered moot by nature’s course.

003.  how  vain  is  your   character?  do  they  find  themselves  attractive?  what  is  their   worst  flaw,  and  are  they  aware  of  it?

she might have grown to be vain if she did not have isabel as a childhood companion. the other woman’s beauty was so stark, so undeniable, and it embodied so many characteristics of desire as well as distant grace, that isolde found herself to be a lukewarm contrast. it was not a comparison that bothered her in the least: isabel’s beauty was a thing to be mirrored at times, but not held over your entire life. it was, like all heavenly boon, a burden. to carry that beauty would’ve required a strength and a determination she did not possess.

004.  what  is  your  character’s  ranking  on  the  kinsey  scale?

a three before her marriage with charles, as emotional bonds were always more readily established with women. she was very fond of all her fellow ladies in waiting when she belonged to the retinue of the old queen, and now she is even more invested in the lives of the younger women she must govern. after her union, it veers towards a two; the idea of becoming involved with someone who would serve no purpose to either isabel or to their duchy seems rather absurd.

the first time she understood that it wasn’t only the king’s heart isabel wanted, but also the certainty such a love could secure. the risks she evaluated (and of which she’d been warned by members of their circle) and still deciding to help nonetheless. the acknowledgement that nothing can compare with proximity to a world on the bring of change, except perhaps the sworn devotion to what has still stayed the same.

devotedly a morning bird. even when she had to stay awake through the late, informal parties tat took place in the private quarters of richmond palace, observing and tailing the ends of conversations like licks of flame, she was still adamant on getting up as early as possible.

010 a.  what  other  character,  a  npc  or  someone  apart  of  the  rp,   is  your  character  completely  real  with?  who  knows  them  best,   has  seen  them  at  their  most  vulnerable,  knows  their  innermost   and  basest  fears?  (b.  if  your  character  does  not  have  this  person,  why?  do  they  long  for  one?)

charles in recent years, but overall isabel. while her own brother kept to the sidelines and permitted isolde to associate with whoever she pleased, it was out of a lack of true understanding rather than a surplus of it. the older seymour never really did comprehend her; not that it would’ve been possible, when isabel had already taken that role for herself.

011.  is  your  character  a  neat  or  messy  person?

organized from the standpoint of mental information and daily responsibilities, and certainly preaching tidiness to the ladies she has under her wing, but sometimes erratic with trivial belongings (sheaves of materials, ribbons, letter kits). 

012.  does  your  character  have  any  irrational  fears  or  phobias?

nothing other than the common ladylike train of vermin, seasonal diseases creeping into the palace, statute ruin. unless you count childbirth as an irrational fear, in which case, yes.

013.  does  your  character  have  an  underlying  passion  or  trait  that  influences  all  aspects  of  their  life?

her need to preserve the status and privileges of those around her. they are inextricably linked with her own: there is no place where charles ends and she begins, no choices isabel makes that does not tug at her own strings. it is not sacrifice, it is not martyrdom. it the mutual egotism that sustains their love, separate and colluded, carnal and platonic.

014.  what  might  your  character’s  ideal  romantic  person  be?

certainly not charles lmao but she has stopped thinking about that ideal for so long that she no longer has any reliable memories. it might have been anyone: the isolde that concocted it, that breathed lifelikeness into its specter with her own desire, no longer exists. not because of some loss, of an identity shaken by something so great that it has no choice but to shift, but due to the normal workings of the world. the choices she made for herself (was allowed to make for herself) as a woman changed the wishes she’s safeguarded as a girl.

015. describe  your  character’s  hands.  are  they  small,  long,   calloused,  smooth,  stubby,  dexterous  or  clumsy?  do  they  wear   any  jewelry  and  would  they  wear  polish  in  a  modern  setting?

in a modern setting they would wear clear nail polish with a top coat. the sort that almost escapes their glance and certainly the sort that’s easily maintained. as it is, her nails are cut short and kept clean, and her hands are small, powdered, entirely within the confines of the ordinary. they work mediocre well with tasks such as embroidery and are far more suited for cerebral purposes like signatures and different calligraphy styles.

016.  how  does  your  character  smell?  what  is  their  favourite  scent?

she is fond of heady, earthly smells, like wood and incense; fragrances that are strong but flowing, associated with the things around them rather than drawing attention for themselves.

017.  how  would  your  muse  describe  their  religious  beliefs?

pragmatic with a twist (some would call that consciousness, others weakness. she loves people from both those sides.)

she can easily give the impression of oversharing when she congresses with the ladies of the queen’s household. however, it rarely happens on its own, or with people from which she expects no reciprocating information. she made that mistake several times in the past with her own brother, and as endearing as the duke of somerset was, he was not one of them.

020. is  your  muse  a  gossiper?  are  they  more  likely  to  argue  with their  fists  or  tongue?  what  does  their  voice  sound  like?

gossiper druid class, rolls 20 on tongue attack.

she believes in people designing the type of love that’s easiest for them to bear. those who need the comfort of destiny, divinity, external pillars to lay their heads against, rely on love at first sight. some rely on the sanctity of marriage - undeceivable, unyielding. other find comfort in opposite corners: in the absence of love, the impermanence of happiness, the war waged against all things everlasting. she no longer concerns herself with which is true. perhaps she never had: charles and isabel have long settled such dilemmas for her.

022.  what  sense  of  humour  does  your  character  have?

optimal according to situation. she is not a great wit (think og anne boleyn) but nor is she ignorant to the subtrends and styles in courtly conversation. she is usually most comfortable when throwing back-and-forth remarks with charles or witnessing his sparring matches with isabel, and more often than not she finds things to contribute herself. but she would never try to replicate that sense of humor and intellectual acumen with most members of court.

023.  what  bad  habits  does  your  character  have?

complacency, egotism, lack of desire to change perspective, often false certainty, duplicity, drawing out private information, outright lying, us against them mentality.

024.  how  does  your  character  feel  about  growing  old?

see 002. though she is plagued by conventional concerns such as her husband’s interest in her over the years (at no point in her life did isolde think her unorthodoxy exempts her from the woes of regular women) she finds the scales to be rather in her favor. the idea that she will not risk pregnancy, or an untimely death, is far more appealing than the risk of charles taking up five times more mistresses than decency allows. if she finds she has lost more than she has gained with old age, she will cross that bridge when it shows. she just usually doubts it will.

025.  does  your  character  prefer  adventure  to  safety  and  security?

she married a man that wants to restructure at least 4 governing systems in europe and is mortally devoted to a woman that’s literally just been poisoned..... choose for yourself

Author’s notes: Am I aware that this timeline is fucked? hella. However I don’t really care that much. Sorry if you do but oops.

I was laying on the floor of my kitchen scrolling through my instagram. The day at school had been absolutely horrendous and sometimes you just get in a mood and need to cry on your floor for a bit and need someone to care for you. Nothing wrong with that. Except that I had no one to take care of me and I was just moody on the floor but oh well that didn’t matter much.

I kept scrolling through my instagram until I got a text from my friend.

‘K I couldn’t care less about your sports shit but like some hockey boy is looking for you and I think you showed me his butt one time?’

Almost immediately my mind went to Auston but it couldn’t be, there was no one way in hell he even remembered my name let alone be trying to find me.

‘Sure Leah whatever you say, I really believe you.’ I replied to her rolling my eyes.

After a little while of laying on the floor I got up and started making some pasta for dinner before the hockey game. I called Grandma too to talk to her about how awful the people of my program were today and to talk through the hockey games.

“What games do you get tonight?” I asked her while stirring the pot.

“I get the Capitals vs Vancouver and eeeew the Leafs vs Nashville.”

“Oh yikes. Which are you gonna watch?”

“I’m gonna have to watch the leafs, I can’t stand Ovetchkin.”

“Poor grandma.”

“I hate the leafs but I hate the Capitals more.”

“I know you do.” I said putting the phone on speaker and sitting down to watch the game.

“And who are you going to root for?”

“Nashville of course.”

“Oh no but what about Fredrik Andersen? And little sunshine william? Oh and who could forget Aaaauston.” she was teasing me, knowing that I made a special exception for those three. And sometimes Mitch depending on what he was doing.

“Yeah, yeah whatever. I love them. They are the exception. Go Nashville and Freddie and Auston and William. That’s it.”

“You better not be rooting for the leafs tonight.” Grandma hadn’t liked the leafs in a long long time. She got me into the sports I liked and she let me know who we like and don’t like. Sure I was able to go off and like whoever I wanted but the leafs sure made it easy to not be a super big fan of, messing things up all the time. But those three were my boys and I was always rooting for them and Grandma knew that.

“I won’t, God. But if Auston gets a goal I’m gonna yell.”

“Like he did when you punched him in the face the other day?”

“Grandmaaaaa I didn’t mean to! It was an accident.” my whole family had been teasing me about this for the past two days and I was still just as embarrassed about it as I had been when I called grandma frantically from the ramp as soon as I was out of Auston’s sight.

“A vicious little thing.”

“No I’m not I love him.”

“Tell that to your fists.”

“You’re annoying.” I said with a big mouthful of pasta making her laugh at me.

“I’m just teasing, dear.”

“Speaking of annoying I don’t like this person singing the national anthem.”

“When do you ever?”

“When George Canyon does it.” and with that the game started and we just talked about the game, me not having enough hockey knowledge to completely understand everything going on and some of the calls or rules. I was relatively new to hockey and this was my first full season watching. They kept showing Auston and everytime they did I got teased again. It was a loooong first period. A bunch of commercials came on and I was walking around my house still talking to grandma.

“Ooooh Ashley, they’re interviewing Auston.”

“What?!” I yelled running over and jumping on the couch. “I almost just fell off the couch trying to get here to see him.”

“Oh my god did you do that to his face?!”

“It was an accident! How many times do I have to say it uugh.” I was about to continue but was shushed. I pouted but then paid attention to the tv.

“So Auston you’ve got quite the bruise right now, what happened there?” the reporter asked him, he nervously chuckled before answering with a smile.

“Yeah uh a girl punched me in the face. Scratched me too.” he said it with a fond smile. “When I went to the Jays game with uh Mitch. She was standing in front of me ya know at the high valley concert and she got excited and stuff. She didn’t mean it. She even took care of me after to make sure I was okay.”

“That was nice of her. Does this mystery punch girl have a name?”

“Yeah Ashley.”

“Are you going to be seeing this Ashley again?”

“Uh haha I uh I hope so. I’ve been trying to find her. But uh who knows? She turned down my offer to sit in the suite with me, Mitchie, Freddie, and Will to sit in nose-bleed seats so really who knows?” he was still smiling though.

“Alright well thank you for your time and good luck finding her.”

“Yeah no problem, thanks I appreciate it.” Auston got serious again and left for the dressing room.

“Hellooooo?” Grandma said on the other line.

“Um hi yes? Hello.”

“Did you catch all that?”

“Um yes I think?”

“Auston is looking for yoooou.”

“This is nuts. No way. This is the literal best news I’ve heard in my life.”

“You know what else is nuts? You giving up a chance to sit with all your favourite boys to sit in your seat with all those party poopers around you.”

“Okay but I didn’t know they’d be party poopers and the seat was great. If the Jays had won it would’ve been perfect.”

“Well you’re a jinx.”

“No I am not!” just then grandma let out a big laugh. A suspicious one for sure. “What are you laughing at over there?”

“They just showed video of you punching Auston Matthews in the face.”

“NO THEY DIDN’T.”

“Yes they did so!”

“Oh no.”

“Could you be any less graceful do you think?”

“No probably not.” I groaned going back over to the tv to see it again. “That really wasn’t very graceful was it?”

“Not even a little bit.”

“Literally everyone I know is laughing at me right now.”

“I’m sure it’s not that bad.”

“No grandma you don’t get it. Every person I know is messaging me laughing at me. This has gone all over the place and now I keep getting texts and messages about it. I’m never going to live this down ever.”

“Oh come of it. That’s a little dramatic don’t you think?”

“If I were laying on the floor, THAT would be a little dramatic. This is the perfect amount of dramatic.”

“Are you gonna try to reach out to him?”

“ARE YOU CRAZY?! NO!!”

“What do you mean no? You’ve been all about Auston this whole season and now he’s trying to find you.”

“Why would be ever want to find me? That would be so dumb of him.”

“Stop that right now. Did you see the big smile on his face when he was asked about that bruise?”

“Yeees.” I said quietly blushing and smiling.

“Just try it.”

“I’m going to put one thing on social media. And if nothing happens, then I guess that’s it.”

“Yes do it. I really think you should. Get your hockey boy.”

“Alright fine. I just need to think of the right thing to say first..” I thought about it for a while during the beginning half of the second period before I found what I thought was the right thing that would let him know for sure it was the same sarcastic girl he met the other day. I took screenshots of my phone blowing up and then went to twitter and I wrote out ‘Thanks to @AM34 and @sportsnet for exposing me to all of Canada lmao’. I thought it was funny. It made me laugh at least. I went back to watching the game and during second intermission I paid a little more attention.

“I wonder if anyone has seen your post yet.”

“Yeah I dunno. I guess we’ll see.” I was really nervous about this. A lot more people than usual had retweeted my post and just overall interacted with it last time I had checked but still not enough to really make any impact I didn’t think.

“Did you really need to be that sarcastic?” Grandma asked laughing as I ran back to the tv.

“God I didn’t think it would be on tv jeeeeeeez.”

“Well on the plus side I think that Auston is gonna see it for sure now.”

“Look how many people tagged him! This is crazy. I’m gonna die.”

“Now THAT is too dramatic.”

“I don’t think so. I feel like I’m gonna die.”

“No you don’t. You’re just nervous. All you can do now is wait, my dear.” she said still laughing at me. “Let’s just watch the game and see what happens. You’ll have to keep me updated on this one though for sure.”

“Well duh. If this works out you get to meet Auston Matthews. Are you excited?”

“Oh yeah thrilled.” she said sarcastically.

“I can hear you rolling your eyes at me. Stop it.” we watched the whole game with lots of teasing of course to me about the whole thing. I continued to cheer for Nashville though. “Wow Kevin Fiala is a beautiful man.”

“You’re ridiculous.”

“What?! He is!” I said defensively.

“If this goes into overtime I’m not gonna be happy.” she said changing the subject.

“Why not? Overtime is fun.”

“Oh pfft sure. This from the same girl that just yells the entire 5 minutes.”

“Oh wow well I woooonder who I got that from?”

“I’m sure I don’t know.”

“Of course you don’t. It’s not like you were the one who made me love hockey or anything.”

“Nope not me.” I rolled my eyes as the clock was running out.

“Looks like we get some overtime Grandma.”

“Darn.” after the break they came back for it and I was excited.

“I love overtime.”

“No you don’t. You love shootouts.”

“K, well yeah but I need to go through overtime first.”

“No shootout. I have to get up early tomorrow.”

“Yes shootout.” we watched the overtime and it was almost done and I was getting more excited for the shootout that would follow but with 15 seconds left Auston got a goal. “YES WOW YAY.”

“What was that?!”

“Oops.”

“Oops she says. God I thought you were rooting for Nashville.”

“In my defense I did say that if Auston scored I was gonna yell.”

“You’re a goofball. I’m going to bed, I’ll talk to you tomorrow and you can tell me all about what happens the rest of tonight.”

“Okay, bye grandma, love you. Goodnight.”

“Love you too. Bye sweetie.”

I hang up the phone and continue watching sportsnet. They interview Auston again and I pay very close attention to that although I didn’t care for his lame nervous hockey answers, I wanted to know if they say anything about my post. They don’t until the very end.

“One more thing Auston and then we’ll let you go. During first intermission you were talking about a mystery girl named Ashley. She reached out on twitter.”

“Wait she did? Uh what did she say?”

“She thanked you and us for exposing her to Canada with screenshots of her family and friends messaging her about it.”

“That sounds like her for sure.” he said with a laugh. “Well if it makes her feel any better for ‘exposing’ her I dedicate that winning goal to her.”

“So now that you know that she was watching how do you feel about how you played tonight?”

“Well uh pretty good. I mean like, I scored the winning goal and I feel like I played really well tonight so I’m glad she chose tonight to watch.” he said laughing again.

“Alright Auston Congratulations on the win. And thanks for your time.”

“Yeah of course no problem.” Auston left for the locker room and I was freaking out. I went into my room and changed into my pajamas. I got snuggled up into my bed trying to answer all the teasing messages I had received when I got some twitter notifications. The ones that killed me though were the ones from Auston. One was him retweeting and the other was a direct message from him. After talking back and forth a couple times I gave him my number and he called me.

“Hi Ashley.”

“Why hello there Auston.”

“I found you.”

“I would’ve made it easier if I had known I was being looked for.” I said making him laugh.

“Fair enough I suppose. What are you up to?”

“Well it’s like 11 so I’m in my pajamas cuddled up in bed right now.”

“Oh sorry, where you going to sleep? I can never sleep after games, I forget.”

“No don’t worry about it. I get too hyper after games to go to bed. I just like being cozy.”

“You’re ridiculous.” he said laughing again.

“Yeah you aren’t wrong. So what are you up to?”

“I’m driving back to my place.”

“Aah fun times.”

“Yeah I guess. I like driving after games alone. It settles me down. I’m glad Mitch went home with Steph because there is no calming down when Mitch is in the car.”

“Yeah I believe that 100%.” I said laughing.

“He’s like a child on a sugar-high. It’s fucking crazy.”

“He does seem like a lot from what I saw at that ballgame.”

“Why didn’t you come with me at the game?” he asked abruptly.

“Um well I didn’t know who you meant by other friends first of all. I get nervous around groups and didn’t want to be all awkward and annoying to everyone. Besides that I had a really good seat.”

“You don’t like groups and you went to a game by yourself?”

“Yeah.” I said simply.

“How was that different?”

I just needed to write a bit to see if itd help me get out of my slump :)

It was not an everyday occurrence for you to feel under the weather.

In fact, it was a rare event. Blue days for you were tabbed under the file of impossibilities in your life, for everything was peachy and placid for a short while. That was because you had Jung Jaehyun in your life.

Well, to be quite fair, your boyfriend, Jaehyun, still held a place in your life. It was just because he was no longer physically close to you. He had to move away for college, now at the opposite side of the country. To keep up communication was a promise, a determined task in order to hold up one of the pillars of the relationship. But even so that duty was met, it never felt enough for you—you craved to see Jaehyun, to be held in his arms again, and feel not the slightest amount of distance. The only proximity you wanted to be shared was the inches that his face were to be from yours, right before he shuts it with a fervent kiss.

And thinking about that made your heart swell—in all the good and bad ways.

Months had soared by and Jaehyun still remained on the opposite side of the country, even though it felt like he was crosswise on the universe. Back at your hometown you spent your college days with a man named Youngho. He was no stranger; in fact, he was someone who knew you as much as Jaehyun did because Youngho was, indeed, your closest friend. During high school the three of you hung out like peas in a pod—until the split happened.

It felt like fate to have Youngho attend the same university as you, especially since the rest of your friends became scattered across the country. But as if there was a transparent string that latched you to Youngho, moving away from him was futile.

Throughout the course of a few months soaring by, Youngho witnessed your blue phases waving over your being like a gargantuan tide. The smile he knew like the back of his hand—the grin he would be able to sketch from memory since it is imbued into his brain—started to fade along with the twinkles of hope that sparkled in your eyes.

Imperfect qualities that Youngho saw as flawless had no longer graced your being, and they were overtaken by a frown of dismal. You then started to walk as if there was an overcast lingering above you, and that weights were dragging your ankles back.

Tired of witnessing your tenebrous appearance, Youngho voiced the idea of lunch. To no surprise, you declined, and that only prompted him to pester you until you released a breathy ‘yes.’

Youngho accompanied you to one of his favourite local restaurants, the beam that painted in his face never faltering from the false belief that his joy would uplift your spirits. Confused looks were being tossed to him, and the question of why he was acting all jocular lodged into your throat, the words in tight knots.

You were sitting across the table from him in his favourite restaurant, an uncomfortable silence lapsing for the first few moments. Your cellular phone was resting on the surface, face up with notifications on in the hopes that your device would flash with an incoming call from Jaehyun. You were more attentive to your phone than Youngho’s words, and it caused him to release a sigh.

“I heard the food here’s pretty good,” he informed you, his fingertips drumming on the wooden table as the meals arrive. “I’m sure you’ll like it.”

You nodded, your lips pursed into a pout. “Yeah, I think I will too.”

Youngho’s expression dropped when he heard your voice. The words were hopeful, but laced with desolation, and it bored a void into Youngho’s chest. You were gawking at your phone, eyes barely peering up to Youngho and at your food. Though, the moment you and Youngho locked solemn gazes he forced a smile, the corners of his lips quirking up into an expression of reassurance.

Your hand was resting on the table and you started to retract it to grab onto your phone, but Youngho’s arm extended to stop you, his hand grasping around your wrist.

“Don’t think about him for one night—maybe even an hour,” Youngho told you with a beaming grin. His thumb circled over your skin in a comforting manner, trying to ease you out of your worries. “Just enjoy this food—I’m sure you’ll love it.”

You released a sigh, a sound Youngho had then became accustomed to throughout the night. “Fine,” you groaned, your hand retracting to your side. “I guess he’s fine.”

“Of course he is,” Youngho assured. “It’s Jae, after all.”

After he said that, you remained silent throughout the entire night. The most you touched your food was with simple prods with a fork, or spears into the sustenance with a knife, but you never consumed anything. Your worries chased their way into your mind in a pestering manner, and it diminished your appetite, making the food go to a practical waste.

Youngho was eating passionately across the table, the corners of his lips quirked upwards as if he believed the happiness was a virus that he would be able to pass onto you. Though, just as your own, his smile faded once you could no longer fight the urge to check your phone for messages, calls—anything from Jaehyun. You perused your social media when there was no luck, only to find a fresh trace of your boyfriend resting on your news feed.

Jaehyun uploaded a picture of himself at a football game, his arm looped around another girl as if he dragged her into an annoying embrace; the sight of it made your insides flame up with envy and fractions of antipathy. A thousand questions soared into your mind: why was he with her, how did he have the time to upload a picture and not respond to your messages for the past two days?

You, once again, sighed and placed your head down on the dinner table. The phone slipped from your grasp and it remained motionless on the surface, enticing Youngho to catch a glimpse of the reason you were under the weather.

Youngho pressed his lips into a thin line and spoke, “Is everything okay, (y/n)?”

You tilted your head, facing him with glossy eyes. “Yeah,” you assured. “Just Jae again.”

“You used to never worry about him,” Youngho commented, twirling his fork into his meal. “Well, you did—but not to this degree. Is everything okay?”

“Of course everything is okay.” You nodded, straightening your posture. You looked at your close friend intensely, the determination in your eyes to convince him present.

Youngho’s eyebrows came together, the worried expression sketching on his face making you slump in your seat. “You haven’t even touched your food,” he commented. “You’re not fine—what’s going on?”

“Just Jae—”

“But what about Jae,” he continued sternly. You were practically able to hear the disappointment sketch on his face, his worries evident in the air. Youngho gained a desire to message Jaehyun, to give him the idea that he was causing you to pain unintentionally—that he was hurting you immensely just by ignoring you or brushing your presence to the side, but he was unable to for all the selfish reasons.

You heard Youngho sigh when you decided to remain silent. The truth was written on the walls, but you were unable to voice the complaints to Youngho—because saying it made you feel as if you were facing the end of your and Jaehyun’s relationship. It was a rocky path since he moved and you chose to give him the benefit of the doubt—always.

Youngho sighed and stared at you as you rose up and fixed your posture. “I want my best friend back,” he told you. You opened your mouth to reply, but he cut you off by adding, “You’ve been worrying about Jaehyun constantly. I think you need to talk to him on the phone about this. And I know he isn’t replying to you, but I’m sure he sees your texts. Message him saying it’s serious and call to sort things out—because I hate seeing you upset. It makes me hurt knowing I can’t do anything to make you feel better, (y/n).”

His words swam in your ears and it took you a while for you to comprehend. Youngho had a valid point, but your fear still took over you for a couple of seconds. “Fine,” you sighed, reaching for your device again. “What should I say?”

“Say you need to talk when he’s free—and that it’s important,” Youngho guided, slipping his phone out of his pocket to pass time as you send the message.

You stared at the screen emptily, the message window of Jaehyun on your screen as if it was mockery. You groaned, dreading such an act and a call, but allowed your thumb to roam the surface nonetheless.

You [6:53 p.m.] Jae, we need to talk. Call me when you can, okay?

You hesitated and looked up at Youngho, whose phone ringed off from a notification, staring at him before adding:

You [6:55 p.m.] I miss you a lot, jae :(

You smiled at the sent messages, the fence no longer feeling like a tall obstacle you had to hop over. Grinning at Youngho, you noticed a frown being pulled at his lips.

“Is everything okay, Youngho?” you asked him, the tables turning as you were worrying about him now.

But he remained silent. The effort Youngho pushed you to do went down the drain, and little did you know those messages to your boyfriend meant close to nothing.

Youngho stared at the message on his screen as if it was a lifeless taunt:

7:A song to drive to

Well, I can’t drive because I’m scared to haha, but my favourite thing to listen to in cars depends on my mood, who I’m with, and how I’m listening.

Essentially, if I’m not feeling very talkative and I have my headphones in and it’s raining and I want to feel like I’m in a black and white music video it’s 100% Viola by Barbara Pravi at the moment or the timeless classic of Beauty and the Beast by Stevie Nicks or like Achilles Come Down by Gang of Youths (i have a really good story about this song if you are interested but it will involve my nerd! alert!classics student mind!) usually these songs are on repeat.

However, if I’m in a good mood but I’m going for headphones then I 100% am gonna be listening to something jazzy that I’ll lip sync too even though nobody knows what I’m listening to, at the moment that would be something like Love Really Hurts Without You by Billy Ocean or Breezeblocks by alt-J.

And lastly, if music is blaring through the speaker and I’m with people it really depends on who I’m with, if I’m with my mom she’s pretty good about music so usually I’m playing songs I really like at the moment to try and get her to like them too haha, if I’m with my dad it’s usually some Queen that we can scream sing too, Grace Kelly by Mika, I Love It When You Call by The Feeling, or any ABBA we can find, or Elvis if we’re feeling nostalgic. If it’s the whole family however our go to tune is anything by Roxette! Particularly June Afternoon because that’s apparently my birthday song haha. The only time I’ve been driving with friends was with gay people so naturally we listened to Stevie the entire time haha.

Umm so Love Letters by Elvis! It’s a tricky one for me because I’ve lately been listening to it and been putting some much more positive memories with it, however, it also makes me think of my Nan. I know the song is romantic but just in a familial love way I loved her so much and the song makes me think of how after she died I would spend hours re reading birthday cards she gave me and just, yea. It makes me cry but it also makes me smile because it makes me think of other things too.

Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday (or Nina Simone’s version) I mean this is obvious I think but it’s just. This song like, how can you listen to this, knowing the history of your country and what has happened to people and sit there and continue to uphold and aid racist systems and ideas?? How?? And how can you listen to this and not be absolutely disgusted by the lack of education on black history. I remember the first time I heard it was when I was young, maybe 11? I was watching Touched by an Angel (lmao see next answer) with my Nan and they did an episode with this song in it. The episode was season 7 ep 7 apparently, basically this girl wanted to pursue music but thought she couldn’t and was going to resort to leaving education and stuff and Monica and Tess found her in a museum talking about lynching and as they were walking through they told her the story of Billie Holliday and about what happened and I remember being so sad. And I remember thinking like how could anyone be so cruel. And I was 11, and I recognised then that it was my people, my ancestors that were cruel and that did this. I was 11. It angers me, how at 11 could I see this, as an ignorant white kid who didn’t really know what racism was because I had the privilege of never experiencing it and I could still see that it was wrong. And that there was an issue. And grown adults still refuse to believe that racism exists. Furthermore, it just proves that racism!! Should be taught to children!!! “They’re too young” is bullshit. If you can experience racism as a child then ignorant white children can fucking learn about it. Sorry for the rant but I just. I hate people. The episode is, I remember it so perfectly and I’ve only seen it once.

Also! The touched by an angel theme tune. It reminds me of my Nan and I love Della Reese and I’m sad that they are both no longer with us :(((

Lastly, (sorry I’m going off tonight apparently) Oh Freedom by the Golden Gospel Singers, barring the obvious reasons there is something about this song that has always struck me to the core. The song, it shows the resilience of people who went through such horrors every single day, horrors that were so ingrained in Christianity and yet they still had faith and hope. The song, it’s so - it’s I don’t even know how to explain it. These people were tortured every single day and yet they came together and they created a community in any way they could and they sung. They were fighters, they fought every. single. day. They sang and they had a community with each other. Even in their worst times, times of torture and pain they found solace through song? I just, I have so much admiration and respect and just I’m in utter awe of them. But it breaks my heart they even had to write the song in the first place.
