Reddit absolutely sucks for fandom but actually it's kind of good for fandom when it's a series whose quality dropped way off and everyone is disappointed.
Tumblr fandom sees that happen and just spirals off into some alternate version of reality 8 dimensions removed from us where the two most shippable boys have had their personalities surgically reconstructed into the most posable-doll soulless stereotypes that can be crammed into a coffee shop AU.
Reddit on the other hand would wither and die if it tried a single transformative thing so it's stuck ACTUALLY talking about the series. And when you have to talk about the series AND it's bad this means you get 20 posts a day of ":( is anyone else disappointed that (...)" each of which spawns its own unique slap-fight in the comments.
Like the corpse of this series means nothing to me anymore. I just want to watch the rats fight each other over it.

stars around my scars
or, the tatto artist!robin au that no-one asked for but everyone gets (ao3)
Ever since he was 11, Theo has wanted a tattoo. He still remembers the day he first asked, if only because of his dad’s expression. He had hurried across the schoolyard, with a cardigan that was slightly too big for him and his backpack hanging off one shoulder, thrown himself into the car, and proudly rolled up his sleeve to show his dad the ‘tattoo’ Sabrina had given him during homeroom. It was simple really, a sword and shield adorned with his initials. His dad had chuckled at it fondly, the way any parent would chuckle at their child’s antics, and started to pull out of the parking space when Theo asked, “so when can I get a real tattoo?”.
He very nearly crashed the truck.
His answer was simply “when you’re older”, and being 11, that felt an age away to Theo, and he felt his chest sink at the idea of waiting for so long.
In the run up to his fourteenth birthday, he tried again, responding with “a tattoo” when his dad asked what he wanted. He sits cross legged on his bed and pretends he cares less than he does, all the while watching his dad out of the corner of his eye. Either he must look sadder than he thinks he does, or he should look out the window and check for flying pigs, because his dad sighs, but then his face softens and he does the impossible; he relents, just a little.
“Maybe when you’re 18,” he says.
His sophomore year of high school is when things start to get really rough. Nearly every day he comes home with bruises and cuts and his dad is less convinced by his excuses each time. He wakes up every morning and wonders what it’ll be; stuffed in a locker, shirt pulled up, pushed down the stairs. Words are used like weapons and hurt just as much, whether they’re spat in his face or written across a locker. Getting up is a constant battle and some days it just feels impossible. The school parking lot feels like No-Man’s Land at the best of times. His dad brings up the idea of transferring to him at dinner one night, but he just raised his chin and reminded him that he’s a Putnam. And Putnam’s don’t run away.
His dad had smiled at that.
There was some good mixed in with the bad though. He found answers to questions that had plagued him for years. He chose a new name, after the greatest woman he never knew, and found the courage to tell his dad who he really is. It hadn’t been easy, he hadn’t expected it to be, but when his dad drove him down to the Greendale barber that day, it had meant more to him than his dad might have understood.
His friends were amazing, which should go without saying. Of course they would be. And he feels good, in some ways he feels better than he’s ever felt about himself. Like he’s stepping into a new part of his life and while he doesn’t know what’s in front of him, he’s excited to see where it goes.
But as happy as he was, not everyone felt the same. Teachers and students alike struggled with his transition, some at least attempting to feign politeness, others not so much. The cruel words don’t stop just because he uses different pronouns now and he still comes home with the occasional bruised knuckles or bloodied nose.
Add on a few stressful long-distance calls with his mother and his high school experience thus far can only be described the same way his English essays are-“Could Be Better”.
Maybe that’s why, a week before his sixteenth birthday, his dad pops his head around his bedroom door and asks him “Do you still want that tattoo?”.
He looks up from his book, almost sure he’d imagined it. His dad may have changed his stance slightly, but if there’s one trait they share more than anything it’s that intense stubbornness. He was prepared to just ride it out and wait until he’s 18, or maybe even until he moves away to college altogether. But no, here he is, age 15, his dad looking at him expectantly.
“Really?” is all he can reply with.
“Yeah,” he says. “I mean, it’s clearly something you want a lot. And I know you’re sensible enough not to get one of those crazy ones that go all the way across your face.” He giggles at that. “And you’ve waited long enough so I figure… why not just let you?”
His mouth falls open and he blinks, waiting for the catch, only for his father to simply shrug at him, a teasing smile playing on his lips.
“Well if you don’t want to-”
He doesn’t get to finish the sentence, because Theo jumps and hugs him before he can.
He enlists Harvey’s help with the design. His drawing skills aren’t bad, but they’re not the best either and if this is going on his body, permanently, he needs to get it right. So he slides up to Harvey on Monday with wide eyes and a smile that’s just the right amount of cute. And if that doesn’t work, he has money in one pocket and a comic book that Harvey really wants in the other.
The other boy looks up with a raised eyebrow and Theo’s glad he brought the back-ups.
“What is it?” he asks.
“Why do you think there is something?” he asks. “Can’t I just be happy to see you? My best friend? My trusted companion I have known since-”
“Oh my God, what did you break?” Sabrina asks. She’s sitting on the desk behind them and her eyes have doubled in size. “Harvey, whatever you do, do not take the fall for him!”
“That was one time, Brina!” he replies. Sabrina bites back a giggle, a twinkle in her eye as she exchanges a look with Roz, and Theo exhales slowly. His cheeks warm, just a little, but he ignores it. Or at least he tries. Same with the nervous prickle of sweat running down his back “Harvey, what I was going to ask was… well, my dad finally said I can get a tattoo, and I was just wondering if maybe you could draw it for me?” His voice gets smaller and smaller as the sentence goes on, and the last word practically limps past his lips. He holds his breath, fingers twitching to grab his two back up plans. But as it turns out, he doesn’t need to, because Harvey bursts into a grin that warms his heart and undoes the knot in his chest.
“Of course I will,” he tells him. “That’s what you were so worried about?”
“Yeah, well,” he shrugs. Whatever words he had die on his tongue, and they laugh it off as Sabrina pats the space next to her. He jumps up next to her, their feet bumping against each other, and they take advantage of the few precious moments they have before class begins.
Harvey hunches over his desk, his hands moving as swiftly and carefully as only an artist’s can. It’s kind of amazing watching him, watching him lose himself in his work the same way Theo loses himself on the basketball court. No, it’s not the same and Theo knows it. He’s nevertheless fascinated by Harvey’s process and that’s why he’s hovering the way he is.
No other reason.
The nail chewing is also completely irrelevant. He does this all the time and it’s perfectly normal.
As is the pacing.
Eventually, Harvey just sights and pulls a chair up beside him and lets him sit. He only moves slightly, but Theo takes the hint and sits back, willing his heart to slow down. He does everything he can to pass time; jumps through social media apps on his phone, flips through Harvey’s stack of comics, even doodles something on a spare page. All the time waiting with baited breath and one eye on Harvey’s hand.
“Okay.” Harvey leans back in his chair, his fingers slightly greyed with lead. “I’m done.”
Theo leans forward and immediately a smile forms on his face. It’s exactly what he had in mind, the outline of a small bird sitting on a branch, poised to take flight, but Harvey’s drawing is more carefully and painstakingly structured than he could have hoped to make it. All his attempts somehow look flat, boring, but Harvey’s looks alive and it reminds him why he wants this particular picture on his body.
“Thank you.” He leans against him, cheek smushed against Harvey’s shoulder, and wraps his arms around him. He sings his words a little, bringing a smile to both their faces. “Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
Harvey plays it down, but he hugs him back just as tightly.
Unfortunately, there are no tattoo places in Greenedale. Theo wonders how, in all his fifteen going on sixteen years of living in this town, he never once picked up on this. Especially since he spent most of that time wanting a tattoo. But no, here he is, the White Pages open on his lap and him staring intensely at the page as if the words tattoo parlour are going to magically appear on the page.
He sighs deeply and scratches his cat behind the ears.
“Well, Lila,” he tells her. “Time to go look beyond Greenedale.” Lila lets out a groan, her little ears flopping down as she rests her head against him, and he takes that as her saying she’s with him. He kisses her head, her fur tickling his nose. “Love you too, baby.”
He finds one close enough, in Woodvale, the next town over. It’s pretty decent money-wise, and while it looks pretty small on the Facebook page, it’s close, and more importantly, his dad goes there for business at least twice a month. He tells him that night he has some errands to run there next week, in fact.
“You can go in, get your tattoo done, then maybe we can go for lunch after,” he says. He shrugs awkwardly, wiping his hand on a tea towel. “You know, if you want. Unless you have plans or something.”
“I don’t have any plans, Dad,” he tells him. “I’d love that.”
He doesn’t miss his dad’s bright smile at his answer.
That night, Lila is sitting around his shoulders as he copies the phone number off the Facebook page. Her tail flicks him in the face and he sighs and adjusts her on his shoulders so she’s more comfortable. His dad sometimes calls her The Queen, and for good reason. That damn cat is more pampered than anything he’s ever known. Even if he does love her and thinks she deserves it.
“Don’t suppose you want to take this phone call for me, do you?” he asks her. She meows back at him, which he takes to mean no you weirdo, make your own appointments, you’re an adult now. She’s right, he doesn’t like it, but she’s right, so he kisses her nose and hits the call button.
“Um, hi, Midsummer Night’s, how can I help?”
Theo clears his throat, glad he had the foresight to chug water right before making the call. Social skills aren’t his best in general and they somehow get worse on the phone. Especially with this kind of appointment-booking stuff. He’s made progress, at least. By that he means he doesn’t feel the need to ask his dad any more. Baby steps.
“Hi,” he replies. “I’d like to book a tattoo. For next Saturday?”
“Next Saturday…” Their voice trails off, the sound of stuff being shoved and moved around filling the silence instead. “Sorry, just bear with me for one second.”
“It’s fine.” He turns on his heel and walks the length of his room again, Lila flicking her tail. It takes him a while to recognise the song playing in the background; Kansas. Carry On My Wayward Son. He’s a little embarrassed; he didn’t spend all that time watching Supernatural to not recognise this song instantly.
He catches himself humming just as the second verse hits.
“Okay, here we go,” the other voice says. “Sorry about that.”
“No problem,” he replies, as though a pink blush isn't colouring his cheeks.
“So that’s next Saturday… what time were you thinking?”
“Is around ten am okay?” he asks. “Sorry, I know it’s like right when you open, but my dad has some business around town that he can’t move and-”
“No, ten’s fine,” they tell him. “And what’s the name?”
“Putnam,” he says, perhaps a little too quickly. “Theo Putnam.”
“Okay, Putnam, Theo Putnam.” It’s a terrible joke, a dad-level terrible joke, but he laughs all the same. “That’s you booked in. I’ll see you Saturday.”
“See you on Saturday,” he replies, and the flutter of excitement in his chest leaves him breathless.
*****
Midsummer Nights' turns out to be a relatively small shop nestled on a street corner, looking only slightly out of place with its dark blue paint job, contrasting with the more pastel colour palette for the rest of the street, and indeed, the rest of the town. He likes it, and he especially likes the shooting stars painted around the door and windows. Twinkling in the mid-morning sun and outlined in thin black lines, trails of gold and silver shooting out from behind them. They’re tiny and probably there as an afterthought, a way to fill space, but Theo is far more enchanted by them than he is the larger pictures of fairies and mermaids that adorn the walls. The care taken alone leaves him breathless. The bigger pictures are impressive, sure, but the care with which the stars have been painted almost takes his breath away. Whoever did them must have the patience of a saint. He’s never really been one for patience, nor for taking his time, instead always running from one thing to the next. Maybe he could learn a thing or two from this person, whoever they are.
“Woah, calm down there,” he tells himself as he turns the handle. “It’s a painting, not a therapy session.”
Inside isn’t entirely what he expected. Well, he’s not completely sure what he expected. Maybe a bunch of hairy biker types, the faint stench of alcohol in the air and a deer head mounted in the wall for good measure. But no, instead he finds white walls decorated with painted trees and vines and as he looks closer, tiny fairies and gnomes poking their heads around them. A smile tugs on his lips as he looks at it. It’s almost magical; a new creature appearing before his eyes the longer he looks. The space is bright, mostly thanks to the large windows, and someone plays folk music softly in the background.
He approaches the front desk, which in actuality looks more like a glorified coffee table and is manned by a girl with blue strands of her hair. She looks up from her book as he approaches and slips a bookmark in without looking. He takes an instant liking to her, or rather she seems like the kind of person he could like.
“Hey,” she greets nonchalantly. “You have an appointment or are you a walk-in?”
“Uh, an appointment,” he replies, scratching behind his ear. “It’s uh-Theo Putnam.”
“Okay, one second.” She flips open a spiral notebook, twiddling a pen between her fingers. Theo takes the opportunity to have another look around, his eyes once again drawn to the walls. He looks up at them, more than happy to wait. There’s something almost tangible yet so surreal about it; like he believes he could find himself here, just not in this reality. And as he cranes his neck, he spies right where the wall meets the ceiling; the stars from the outside.
“Sorry about that,” the girl says, snapping him back to reality. “So yeah, you’re all booked in, if you just want to go down to the back, Robin will take care of you.” Theo nods, a ‘thank you’ on his lips, but before he can say it, the girl turns her head and screams “ROBIN YOUR PERSON’S HERE!”. Theo stumbles backwards, blown away by and also amazed that all the windows are still intact. She simply turns back, her smile sweet, and opens her book again. “He’ll be down in just a second.”
He can’t decide if he likes her more or less after that.
“Jesus Christ Moth, I’m coming,” someone, he presumes Robin, calls from above them, the voice faint. Theo grins as he realises that he probably wasn’t meant to hear that. He wanders past the front desk, but not before catching the small shit-eating grin on Moth’s face.
He likes her.
Robin (he assumes it’s him anyway) emerges on the bottom step, shooting an annoyed look at Moth that disappears immediately once he sees Theo, instead morphing into an apologetic half-smile.
“I’m sorry about her,” he says. “She’s under the impression that she’s cute. And she’s also a middle child.”
“Ah that explains a lot,” Theo chuckles. “Well, it’s fine. I mean, it seemed to be effective anyway.”
“Yeah,” he chuckles. Theo’s breath catches in his throat and he can’t work out why. Robin is pretty, but he’s never been the type to lose his words over pretty boys. He’s tall, way taller than Theo, and his short-sleeved black shirt doesn’t leave much to the imagination. His dark hair is streaked with green and falls forwards into dark eyes, causing him to toss his head to push it back. Normally he’d find that kind of look douchey, but it’s not, not on him, it’s actually kind of cute in a punk-rock slash edgy poet kind of way and suddenly he’s aware how neither one of them have said anything yet.
“I’m Theo. We uh, we spoke on the phone.” It comes out as more of a question than a statement, at least in his mind.
“Yeah, I remember,” he says. “Putnam, Theo Putnam.”
“Yep, that’s me,” he replies, caught between laughing and cringing at himself. If he had known it was going to be like this, he’d have tried to make that phone call way less awkward. Robin doesn’t seem to mind though, instead tapping his arm lightly and gesturing with his head.
“Why don’t you come through with me and we can get started?”
“That’s definitely what I came here to do,” he says, and when Robin smiles, his heart melts and he curses silently.
Dimples. Of course he has dimples. The asshole.
He sits up on a leather chair, his backpack and jacket discarded on the floor and his sleeve rolled up. His feet dangle just above the floor and he’s deliberately not looking at the very pointy needles. It’s not like he’s got a phobia or anything, and he definitely knew this would be part of the process. It’s just a little unnerving.
“You got a design?” Robin asks.
“Uh, yeah here.” He holds the paper out to him. “My friend Harvey drew it. He’s really great at the art stuff. But-but the idea was mine and I… dictated it to him.”
“Cool,” he replies. “And where do you want it?” Theo pulls his sleeve up, his fingers gesturing to just below his shoulder. Robin nods, and his eyes darken slightly, as if his focus is shifting entirely to the tattoo and nothing else. He positions himself as close to him as possible, and they sit in silence as he carefully transfers the design onto tattoo paper.
Then Robin’s hand is against his skin, and the needle is barely an inch from it, and goosebumps prickle along there.
He must look as nervous as he feels, because Robin’s grip on his shoulder softens slightly, as does his face, and his voice comes in a careful whisper.
“Hey,” he tells him. “It’s okay. It doesn’t hurt that much. And I promise I’m careful.” Theo nods, even if his nails are digging into the leather beneath him. “Besides, it’s only the first one that really hurts. After that everything’s fine.”
“That’s what she said.” His voice is far weaker than he’d like it, the joke even more so, but Robin busts out laughing and so does he, and he barely realises that he started.
He was right though; while the pain doesn’t necessarily lessen, he gets used to it. If one could ever get used to the feeling of a needle jabbing one’s skin over and over. It kind of helps that he’s got plenty to distract him with the art on the walls and even if he didn’t; Robin is surprisingly easy to talk to.
“So you’re not from around here, are you?” he asks casually. “Sorry, it’s just… here you get to know people pretty quickly. And I’ve never seen you around here.”
“It’s fine,” he replies. He relates of course; small towns are small towns. “I’m from Greenedale. Ever been there?” Robin frowns slightly, his mouth falling half-open as he thinks.
“I think I drove through it once or twice,” he says. “Isn’t that the place that’s obsessed with witches and stuff?”
“That’s the one,” he says. “They’ve got all the spooky sights but unfortunately no tattoo parlours.” He goes to shrug but then remembers one arm is currently being used. “So I had to take a little trip out here.”
“You know when I was driving through I distinctly remember the lack of tattoo parlours,” Robin jokes. “Still. It’s a nice place.”
“I guess,” Theo mumbles. “I was always so focussed on the leaving.” He kicks the ground.  “I’ve never looked around properly.” Greenedale hasn’t exactly been kind to him either. He may love his friends dearly, and it’s not like his memories are all bad, but there are days when the familiar streets are less comforting and more maddening, and the town line feels more like a prison wall. It’s not every day he feels like this, but enough for him to have taken notice.
Robin chuckles beside him, and it’s then he suddenly remembers where he is, and that there is in fact a person beside him. A person he barely knows. And while a blush does creep over his cheeks, he doesn’t feel nearly as embarrassed as he should.
“Sorry,” he mumbles. “Kind of dumping my tragic backstory on you there.”
“Trust me, you’re not the first,” Robin tells him. “Guess there’s something about a person having a needle shoved into their skin repeatedly that puts them in a sharing mood.” He flips his head, tossing his bangs out of his face. “So what’s the deal with the witch thing?”
“Basically a lot of witches came over from Europe and settled over there,” he explains. “And when it came to picking a town personality trait, it was between either witches or thinly-veiled bigotry.” He goes to shrug, but then remembers the needle against his arm. “I guess ‘we’ll put a spell on you’ is a more catchy slogan than ‘we’re all raging assholes’.”
“Well, that may be true,” Robin says. “Though I’d admire any town with the balls to admit that they’re all assholes.” Theo chuckles again, swinging his feet slightly. Robin must be right; there must be something about getting a tattoo that makes you pretty chatty. That or Robin’s just… easy to talk to. He hasn’t met someone like in a while, not since Sabrina and Roz and Harvey. Something flutters in his chest and he doesn’t quite recognise it. He likes it, though. Even if in the back of his mind he wonders if he should be scared by it.
“Yo.” Moth appears in the doorway, hanging off the wall by her fingertips. She looks over at Theo’s arm, where Robin’s needle is, and a faint smile forms on her lips. “Not bad, Robin.”
“Thanks,” he replies, his eyebrow raised, and he looks up at Theo. “For her ‘not bad’ is possibly the highest praise you can get.”
“Not true. There’s at least two more levels, you just haven’t unlocked them yet,” she adds. “Anywho, I’m going on the coffee run, what do you want?”
“You know my order,” he replies, focussing more on his work than on her.
“So that’s an iced salted caramel latte, then,” she says. Robin’s cheeks turn pink suddenly, his hand slowing but not faltering. Judging by the look on Moth’s face-which can only be described as a shit-eating grin-that was the goal. “Do you want me to ask for whipped cream like last time?”
“No, thank you, Moth,” he mumbles, rolling his eyes. The gesture is equal parts exasperated and fondness, like Moth has been a pain in his ass for so long, and he likes it that way. Theo relates.
“He always pulls that ‘you know my order’ crap when a customer’s here,” she explains. “He’s embarrassed ‘cause his actual order isn’t very macho. Plus he thinks the cool and mysterious vibe impresses clients. Especially around the ones he thinks are cute. Anyway, you want anything?”
Theo freezes, his response-whatever it would be-caught in his throat. Moth seems unaffected, checking her nails like nothing is wrong. Maybe nothing is wrong, and he’s just overthinking. Or misheard her and she didn’t actually imply that Robin might find him cute. Either way, there’s probably no reason his cheeks should be as pink as they are now.
“N-no I’m okay thanks,” he says.
“You sure?” she asks. “No extra charge, just give us a good review.”
“It’s fine,” he says. He clears his throat and hopes his voice doesn’t actually sound that high. “I’m going out with my dad after this anyway.”
“Mm. Suit yourself.” She turns on her heel and flounces off, the sound of jangling keys and her boots on the floor growing fainter. Theo doesn’t dare breathe until she’s gone though-the closing door releasing the tie around his chest. When he turns to Robin, the other boy seems far calmer than he is, already back to work with a bemused grin on his face. His eyes meet Theo’s and he shakes his head lightly, his hair falling in front of his eyes.
“Don’t worry about Moth,” he tells him. “She’s taken it upon herself to try to set me up with every guy that comes in.” He shifts himself slightly. “Trust me, it was nothing.”
“Oh… okay.” The small tug of disappointment comes at a surprise to him, and he searches for a way out. “But was she right about your coffee order though?” Robin chuckles.
“Maybe.”
“Well, you don’t need to worry,” he tells him. “I personally think iced lattes are very macho. Of course we should ask ourselves ‘what is macho’ and then that takes us on a whole lovely journey that you probably don’t want to go through right now.”
“Eh, I might do,” he says. Theo turns to him, and his eyes are the exact mixture of teasing and serious, and the grin on his face widens. “But we can agree that salted caramel lattes rock, right?”
“Absolutely,” he says, and he realises in that moment he really likes this guy.
Which way he likes him though is a question he leaves unanswered.
In what feels like no time at all, Robin is slowly finishing up, an empty coffee cup at his side. At some point, Moth came in and started work on another client, casually talking to Robin above the hum of the tattoo needles. Robin doesn’t stop chatting to him though and they move through things like school (where he learns Robin’s favourite subject is English), music (where Robin actually has to stop and write down Theo’s music recommendations) and pets, where Theo goes on a ten minute rant about Lila and how she’s simultaneously the love of his life and the bane of his existence.
“Your cat sounds amazing,” he says. “Next time you’re in town you should bring her in so I can meet her.”
“You could always come over to Greendale,” he says. It’s so casual he didn’t even think about it before he said it, and he might have freaked himself out. If Robin feels the same, he doesn’t show it, only nodding and saying he might take him up on that.
They turn to talking about Midsummer Nights’ itself; how Robin started working there one summer as a teenager, how only last year he graduated from sweeping floors to taking clients, and how just a few months ago he and Moth (“mostly me,” he added, just loud enough so she could hear) redecorated the entire place, including the outside.
“I did those little stars on the wall outside,” he remarks. “Don’t know if anyone notices them, but they’re my crown jewel as far as I’m concerned.”
“I noticed,” Theo tells him. “I like them.” He doesn’t tell him how entranced he was by his work, but he does notice the softness in Robin’s smile, the pink hue in his cheeks. It makes sense, somehow, that Robin painted those stars. He barely knows him, but he feels like it makes sense.
For the last few minutes, the conversation drops away, and silence falls as all Robin’s focus shifts to his work. It’s a look he recognises from Harvey, an artist’s expression, but it feels deeper with Robin. His movements are so precise, so deliberate, that Theo feels he should hold his breath lest he break his concentration. He imagines him months ago, the same expression on his face as he paints the stars outside, and he’s almost sad he wasn’t there to see it.
Robin groans as he leans back, pushing his hair away from his face, and his eyes light up.
“We’re done,” he says. “You want to see it before we put the bandages on it?”
“Hell yeah I do.” He jumps off the seat and follows Robin, bouncing on the balls of his feet as he goes. Robin leads him to a mirror, his face shining with anxious pride, and Theo gives him a small smile before he turns and his breath is taken away.
“It’s perfect,” he breathes. Perfect as anything could be, really. Clean cut, careful, delicate. There’s so much life in it, even though it’s only ink. The little bird sits perched on its branch, determination strong on its small face. He couldn’t have asked for a better job. It’s everything he dreamed when he was younger, now a physical reality. He takes a deep breath, trying not to be the kind of person that cries after their first tattoo. “Thank you, Robin.”
“No problem,” he says softly and when Theo looks up, he finds Robin’s eyes lingering on him. “Putnam, Theo Putnam.”
                                                                        *****
He and his dad find a little cafe in the middle of town and sit outside, taking advantage of the good weather.
“So was it worth waiting for?” his dad asks. “The tattoo?”
“Yes, it was,” he replies. “Thank you, Dad.” His dad waves his hand dismissively, as though the back-and-forth between them never happened.
“No problem kid,” he says. “It was what you wanted. And the place was good?”
“Yeah.” He pops another French fry in his mouth. “It was really, really good. They were uh… good at their jobs.” His hand moves to where the bandage sits on his arm, the tattoo perfectly preserved beneath it, and yet that’s not what he’s thinking about. Instead his mind drifts back to Robin, with his hair falling into his eyes and his laugh and those damn dimples. He takes a drink just as he feels the heat rush to his cheeks, and his dad eyes him curiously. He sets the glass down, even though his mouth is still dry. “It was great.”
A knowing smile spreads across his dad’s face and he curses under his breath. This is what he gets for having a close relationship with his father. Stupid strong father-son bond.
Theo puts his hand in his pocket and his fingers close around empty fabric, rather than plastic. He hurriedly checks the other pocket, then his jeans, his panic rising each time. His dad turns when he realises Theo is no longer beside him, his feet rooted to the sidewalk instead, and his eyes widen, reflecting Theo’s own alarm back at him.
“Theo?” he asks. “What happened?”
“I-I can’t find my phone!” he sighs. He pulls items out of his pockets one by one, his wallet, his keys, loose change… no phone. He taps every pocket again to make sure, as if it was going to magically appear if he willed it hard enough. No such luck. He mumbles under his breath, a stream of ‘oh shit’ and ‘oh no’ as he tries to fight off the rising panic. He tries to retrace his steps, to remember the last place he had it out, to think of wherever the hell his phone could be in this town-
“Theo!”
Or maybe he doesn’t need to.
“Theo!”
He turns around to see Robin running down the street, skidding to a half just in front of him. His face is bright red, not from teasing his time, his chest heaves and his hair sticks to his face. They look at each other, breathless, and just as Theo opens his mouth to ask what he’s doing, he holds his hand out.
“My phone!” he squeaks.
“Yeah you… you left it in… with me,” he says between gasps. “I was really hoping I’d be able to catch you before you left.”
“Oh God I’m sorry,” he says, taking another look over Robin. The tattoo parlour is far enough from here, and the streets here twist and turn around as they please. And Robin ran through them. For him. In jeans. “Thank you so much, Robin. I-how did you know it was mine?”
“The picture on the lockscreen,” he explains, pointing vaguely. “It was you.” He pushes his hair away from his face. “And… your boyfriend?”
“My boyfriend?” he asks. For a second his mind goes blank, then he realises and it nearly knocks the wind out of him. “Oh God no, Harvey’s…. he’s just my friend. No, no I…” He rubs the back of his neck, his eyes meeting Robin’s and he can’t work out if the hopeful look on his face is real or his imagination. Either way, he ends up saying “I’m completely single.”
“Oh,” he says, about ten times higher than usual. He clears his throat, his hand sliding into his back pocket. “Uh… me too.”
“Seriously? What the whole jacked as hell, dyed hair tattoo artist thing doesn’t attract anyone?”
“Not around here it doesn’t, apparently,” he says, implying that the reason he’s single is beyond no-one wanting to date a tattoo artist. There’s a pause, a brief moment of silence, and Theo goes to say goodbye, to run before it gets awkward, but Robin holds out a small piece of paper.
“What’s this?” he asks as he takes it. Robin ducks his head, his bangs falling in front of his face.
“I hope it’s not too forward,” he begins. “But it-it’s my number.” He shrugs and pushes his hair back. "Just in case you ever want to call me sometime."
“Oh,” he replies. It’s a short, quick word. It hardly means anything. Certainly doesn’t reflect how his stomach as dropped out from under him, or how his brain is vibrating at an insane frequency, or how the unending cry of ‘HE GAVE ME HIS NUMBER’ blasts around his head like a fire alarm. And all the while he just stands there, the paper in his hand, blinking up at Robin like he hasn’t a care in the world. “Um… thanks.”
“Sorry,” he says immediately, his face scrunched up. “I-it was too forward, I didn’t mean like that.”
“No,” Theo says, just as Robin’s hand twitches. He slides the paper into his back pocket with a shaky hand and gives him a small smile. “It’s not… like that at all.” It’s really not. It’s not… He’s not sure what it is. All he knows is that Robin’s not at fault. “It’s okay, really.”
He turns slightly and sees his dad standing at the truck, pretending to be interested in a receipt he pulled out of his pocket. His dad hasn’t pressed and knowing him, he’s probably fully intending on giving the two of them as long as they need to work out… whatever it is they’re working out. Anxiety clutches his chest and he backs up suddenly, his hand still slid into his pocket. He needs time all right, but not here.
“I should go,” he says. “But I’ll...” His voice trails off, his fingers fidgeting in mid-air. The piece of paper burns like a small star in his pocket. “Thank you. For everything.”
“You’re welcome,” Robin says. He tosses his hair again and damn, he should not find that as cute as it is. “Look us up if you’re ever back in town.”
“I will.” He gives a wave to Robin, who responds with a wave, and Theo responds to that with a small finger gun and screams at himself the minute he turns around. He climbs into the truck beside his dad, who already rolled the windows down. Thank God, Theo thinks, because he feels fit to explode. He leans out as his dad pulls away from the curb, closing his eyes as the air tickles his skin.
“So you made a friend?” his dad asks. He doesn’t need to turn around to see the bemused smile on his face.
“He was the guy who did my tattoo,” is his reply. His dad nods, a soft chuckle escaping him, and goosebumps prickle on his skin.
“He gave you his number,” he points out. “Are you gonna call him?”
Theo sighs, his fingers tracing over the paper in his back pocket.
“I don’t know,” he answers honestly. “Maybe.”
He doesn’t call him. At least, not right away. Who he does call is Harvey, Roz and Sabrina, who all stand around his bed with him, the offending phone number sitting in the centre. He filled them in as best he could, although with all his energy being focussed on the decision, he’s only really been able to give them ‘I met a guy, he gave me his number’. And now they’ve been standing there, minutes passing in silence, while Theo stares at it with enough intensity to light it on fire.
“I think you should call him,” Roz says eventually.
“Why?”
“Because he gave you his number for that very purpose,” she tells him slowly. Theo pulls a face at her, but it only lasts for a second because… she’s right. She has an infuriating habit of being right. If she wasn’t so cute and supportive and lovely he’d have stopped hanging out with her long ago for that very reason.
“So why haven’t you?” Sabrina asks. “Called him. I mean his number’s right there. What’s stopping you?”
“What isn’t stopping me?” he mumbles, just loud enough for them to hear, and the three friends share an understanding nod. His experience with romance is extremely limited-his first and only “relationship” was the Valentine’s card that appeared in his backpack in third grade. He never chased them up, and that was the end of it. All other knowledge either comes from his friends or movies. At this moment, he feels like he’s on the edge of the deep end, nothing to help him, and he’s not sure he won’t drown when he jumps.
“Hey.” Sabrina appears at his side, her shoulder bumping against his. “I still think you should do it.” He raises his eyebrow at her. She simply shrugs in response, her eyes flitting over to Harvey as she speaks. “I mean… I know it’s a cliche, but you’ll never know until you try.”
“Yeah,” Harvey adds. “I mean what’s the worst that could happen?”
“So many things,” Theo sighs, raking a hand through his hair. He’s not blessed with what Harvey and Sabrina have-a sweet little romance that’s been blossoming since childhood-nor does he have his pick of suitors like Roz does. As far as he knows, this Robin’s his one chance. He shakes his head, his fingers drumming on his arm. “Maybe I just shouldn’t.”
“I disagree,” Roz pipes up. “I think very hot boys giving you their numbers doesn’t just happen every day and since the universe has presented you with this opportunity, I for one think you’d be an idiot to pass it up.” She delivers everything so quickly that it takes a few seconds for him to register it, and then she comes round to his side and slings her arm around his shoulders, all warm smiles and warm eyes, and he rests her head on her shoulder. “Besides, I know you’ll regret it if you don’t.”
She’s not wrong. Again. If there’s one idea that scares him more than it not going well, it’s never even happening at all.
“And in the event it goes horribly wrong, we’ll all buy ice cream and we can have a good cry session,” she promises, and the other two nod in agreement. Theo closes his eyes and buries his face in Roz’s shoulder so they won’t see his blush.
God damn it, he loves his friends.
It takes a week for him to call him, even with those assurances. One day he feels braver than usual; he chalks it up to a good day at school and an even better one at practice, and so he sits on his bed and punches Robin’s number into his phone, the note sitting on his pillow. Because yes, he kept the note instead of writing it down. Nothing wrong with that.
“Hello?” Robin picks up too suddenly, and Theo bites back a squeak. He jumps off the bed and pulls on his shirt for some reason.
One chance he reminds himself. One chance.
“Hi, Robin?” he asks. “It’s uh, it’s Theo. Theo from Greenedale? You did my tattoo last week.”
“Oh, Theo, hey,” he replies. “Um, hi. H-how’s it turned out? The tattoo I mean?”
“Perfect,” he confesses. “It’s a hit with the guys on my basketball team. You should be expecting an influx of jocks coming round soon.”
“I’ll let Moth know, we’ll stock up on Gatorade.” Theo chuckles and sits on the edge of his bed, the beating of his heart slowing slightly. Maybe this could work. Maybe, if the stars are right, this won’t fall apart.
“Robin,” he begins quietly. “The reason I called was… em… I wanted to ask you-” The words stick in his throat like grains of sand against rocks. So many questions overlap in his head, each drowning the other out and turning into static. He closes his eyes, takes deep breath in, and back out. No need to overthink it, he tells himself. Just jump.
“Do you have plans on Saturday?” he asks.
“As a matter of fact, I don’t,” he replies. “Why do you ask?”
Theo throws himself on the bed, his legs in the air, and is amazed at just how easy this actually is.
                                                                          *****
They have their first date in Greenedale, seeing a movie at the Paramount, followed by a personalised tour. Robin gives Theo his jacket at some point, the sleeves falling past his hands, and Theo’s heart flutters.
They have their first kiss by the Welcome To Greenedale sign, Robin’s hand caressing his arm, right above where his tattoo is.
A year later, he’s laying in Robin’s bed, his boyfriend’s fingers gently caressing his newest tattoo-free of charge this time around. Theo kisses his bare shoulder before Robin goes to sit up, reminding him that he has to be at work in half an hour. Theo just pouts, grabs his arm, and tries to see if he can get five more minutes out of him.
Yeah, life is good.

Survey #426
“insatiable furnace, burning up our surplus  /  watching all essential life become another servant”
Are you a brunette? Yep. It is way past due time that I get it dyed... What is your favorite channel on TV? I don't really watch TV, but if I did, I'm pretty sure it'd probably be Discovery. Have you ever been to Chicago, IL? Yes!! It's my only experience with a truly BIG city, and though I'm not a city person, the experience was pretty magical. It was something I wasn't even remotely used to. Just so much life and business and energy to feel there. Who was your first friend? Brianna. She was the sister of my older sister's best friend. What is your favorite holiday? Christmas. :') Do you regret your last kiss? Nope. Have you ever taken a karate class? No. Who was the last person to tell you ‘I love you’? My mom. Have you ever been to the Statue of Liberty? No. Do you live on your own? Noooo. I don't think I ever could. I would have to stay VERY busy, or else the loneliness would kill me. Hell, even if I was very active in stuff, I still don't know if I could. With how bad my depression is capable of being, it doesn't sound smart at all for me to move out unless it was with somebody. Are your the oldest child? No, I'm the middle kid. How many X-rays have you had in the last 2 years? Two, maybe? One for my legs and the other for my teeth. Are you on good terms with your last ex? Yeah, we're best friends. Do you have scars you don’t like to talk about? Nah. Do you freak out if a bee/wasp flies near you? ... yes lol. What subjects in history interest you most? The Holocaust. It's just so... shocking and extreme that it's oddly fascinating, but of course horribly sad. Are you superstitious in any way? Nah. How do you get rid of anxiety? Do what? Are there any items of jewelry you never/rarely take off? Yeah, my two rings, my lip piercing, and tragus piercing. Has a song ever made you cry before? There are many. ^If so, what about it brought you to tears? Again, I said "many," so this would be a horribly long list. There are four though - "Eternally Yours" and "Another Life" by Motionless in White, "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin, and "The Mortician's Daughter" by Black Veil Brides - that I really, really try to avoid, because I WILL cry. They're all associated with Jason for one reason or another. "Stairway to Heaven," especially, is absolutely forbidden for me to listen to. Would you consider yourself open-minded? Very, honestly. Have you ever met someone online that you wanted to meet in real life? I've met Sara! :') There are a handful of others I'd love to meet, too. Tell me about the last thing that made you laugh until it hurt. Wow, I have no idea. I don't remember the last time I laughed THAT hard. When you graduate, what color will your gown be? Ugh, it was this insufferable red. We got to vote on it, and I really wanted navy instead, as it looks more formal and not as obnoxious to me, but red won. Do you own a gun? No. My household legally can't because of my suicidal history. What color of shirt are you wearing? It's a black tank top. Do you use any acne medication? Nah, I don't really get acne anymore. Are you emotional or very stoic? I'm emotional as shit. Have you ever watched an anime series, start to finish? A few. There's Fullmetal Alchemist (as well as the Brotherhood expansion), Deadman Wonderland, and Ginga Densetsu Weed. I've seen bits of others. Which baby animal is your favorite? MEERKATS!!!!!! :') Once they reach three/four weeks, they're fucking precious. I also really like kittens. Do you like jam on your toast and biscuits? Sometimes. Have you ever reread a book? It is very, VERY rare I do this. The only cases I remember are for Because of Winn-Dixie and Meerkat Manor: Flower of the Kalahari. Do you have any religious symbols in your home? I think Mom has some religious quotes on the walls? What religion do you identify with, if any? None. What is you favorite flavor of pudding and/or yogurt? I love chocolate pudding, but I'm not very big on yogurt because of the sourness. I can sometimes eat a cookies 'n cream one, but occasionally I'm like "ew." We’re going to the best amusement park ever, first ride you choose is? One of those water rides where you go down a big slope. Did you have intense night terrors as a child? No. Know anybody who works in a tattoo parlor? No. That'd be dope. Have you ever had a piercing get infected? Ugh, yes. Worst was the first time I got my tongue pierced. It was early into infection though, thank God; I ended up having to take it out and get it re-pierced later. Have you ever shoplifted? No. Do you hate when people say, "Everything’s going to be fine,“ when it’s not? Sometimes. It can feel kinda dismissive of your extreme situation, and sometimes, things simply won't be okay. Like, you can't tell that to someone on their death bed. Do you check your fire alarms when you’re supposed to? No, oops. Are you a shorts-wearing kind of person? Absolutely not. Nobody wants to see my legs, not even me. Is your grandparents’ house obsessively tidy? My grandma's sure as hell was. She was very old-fashioned and "proper" and took cleanliness and manners very seriously. Do you know how to jumpstart a car? Nope. Would you date someone 8 years older than you? Probably. What did you do today? I WENT TO THE GYM AND DID A FULL HOUR OF EXERCISE!!!!! :') For once I am SO fucking proud of myself. I left drenched in sweat, but I also left with a feeling of great accomplishment. I'm going to be going twice a week now with a personal trainer. (: Who was the last person you fell asleep with? Sara. Have you ever punched a hole in the wall? No. People doing that shit terrifies me. Have you ever felt replaced? Sure have. Have you ever kissed someone who was high? No. If you caught your significant other cheating on you what would you do? I don't have a partner, but hypothetically, leave their ass in a blink. I don't fuck with those kind of people. Do you know who Jeffree Star is? Well, yes. I watch him on YT sometimes and (astonishingly) love his music, and I find his work ethic extremely inspiring. That man knows how to hustle. What’s your favourite alcoholic beverage? Probably sangrias. When was the last time you saw a photo of your ex? "The" ex, it's been years. I've removed all pictures I have of him, irl and digitally, because it's triggering for me. How many push-ups can you do? Probably zero. Do you play any games on your phone? There's Pokemon GO, DragonVale, and Dragons of Atlantis that I play semi-regularly. Have you ever received a compliment from a stranger? Yes. Have you ever shaved your face? Just my upper lip to avoid the lady stache, ha ha. What colour is your front door? It’s white. Do you take the stairs or the elevator? If an elevator is available, I will ALWAYS use that. I have an extreeeemely hard time getting up stairs because of having just about no leg muscle. Do you get motion sickness? No. When was the last time you went to your favourite restaurant? Oh man, it's been forever. :/ Olive Garden sounds soooo good right now. Do either of your parents have any tattoos or piercings? No. Well, Mom has her earlobes pierced once, but that's it. Are you desperate for anyone’s approval, in particular? It's funny, even though he hasn't been a part of my life for years, I still desperately crave what I think would make Jason proud. There have been many times where my mind has wondered to what he would think of me now... and I know it's not good. Are there any activities you enjoy doing, but can only do for a short amount of time before you get bored or tired of them? Reading. When was the last time you felt hopeful, and why? Today, after finishing my workout at the gym. I think, finally, that I may be taking another stride forward in life. Do you find yourself asking for the same things for your birthdays and for holidays? Ha, yup: a new tattoo, 100%. What is something someone recommended to you that you disliked/hated? Girt's recommended some music to me before. He loves sharing songs he likes with me. Of course I didn't tell him it sucked, ha ha. What’s a fact about the last person you kissed? She is very passionate about animals, reptiles in particular, and is simply amazing with them. If you had a child, would you rather have a girl or a boy? A girl for sure. Has anybody ever accused you of doing drugs? No. Have you ever fallen asleep with the last person you kissed? Yeah. I own a lot. Do you go to shows mostly for the music, the moshing, or the merchandise? I go for the music. It's nice to buy merch, but it's SO expensive that it's dumb. Moshing, I think is just stupid. Have you ever had anything pierced that you don’t have now? Many places, actually. So many holes closed because piercings had to be taken out when I was in the psych hospital. I was so annoyed. Who were you with the first time you watched the last movie you watched? I was alone. Do you have any twins/multiples in your family? Are they identical or fraternal? No. What is the highest number of jobs you’ve had at one time? One. Is your mom a good mom? She is the actual best. Last thing you threw in the garbage? The crust of some leftover pizza I had this morning. I generally eat the crust, but this time it was WAY too hard.

Oh.
Tumblr media
Pairing: Calum Hood/ Reader
Requested By: N/A (kinda by Sham, I think she mentioned this like 58 months ago.)
Word Count: 8,277
Summary: Tattoo!Soulmate AU. Everyone is born with a tattoo of the first word their soulmate will say to them when they meet. But what happens when you don’t know that they’re your soulmate and you lose them?
Oh.
That’s all it said, was Oh.
Everyone in the world is born with a tattoo of the first word that their soulmate will say to them when they finally meet. Some people had fun words, like pizza or unicorn. You’d even known a boy in middle school whose tattoo said trapezoid. You had a cousin whose tattoo said Cancer, which everyone hoped meant that she would end up with someone born in June or July, but nobody could really be sure.
More often than not, these tattoos were greetings of some kind. Hello, hi, and excuse me made appearances most frequently. Your father’s tattoo had said Sir, while your mother’s had said Yes. They met while she was waiting tables in college and the rest, as they say, was history.
But yours? Yours just said Oh. It infuriated you beyond belief, if you were being honest. It was just a basic word, one that you yourself said multiple times a day. There was nothing exciting about it. No context to it at all. You found yourself looking down at your wrist any time a stranger would say the word to you for any reason at all. But every single time you looked, it was still there. The drill was that once the right person said this magic word, the tattoo would disappear. Once the tattoo disappeared, you’d found your soulmate. At that point, you were supposed to kiss, fall in love, live happily ever after. The End.
But here you were, alone in your tiny, one bedroom apartment with your cat and no soulmate. No idea whatsoever about who your soulmate could even be. The only thing you had to go on was the tattoo. That stupid word you’d grown to hate seeing every day, anytime you washed your hands or touched your face. Oh.
When you were younger, you and your friends would often sit together and compare tattoos. You would spend hours outside, or in one of your bedrooms, even in Mallory’s treehouse sometimes when her grandma was home to watch you. Just holding your fists out to each other to show off the black ink on your wrists and come up with elaborate and extravagant stories about how you would meet your soulmates. You’d never forget the time that Christine found out that Aaron, the boy she had a crush on, had a tattoo that said And. She spent days coming up with what you all thought was a clever plan for her to have a reason to say it to him. The day came, she said her lines perfectly, but to her horror- both of their tattoos remained. She’d cried for hours after school, claiming that the tattoo system was broken. But then, two summers ago she met Erin and decided that the tattoo system was working just fine, thank you very much.
Today was Saturday, your weekly lazy day. The one day you allowed yourself to not care about the dishes piling in the sink or the laundry you swore you were going to do three days ago. No, Saturdays, as far as you were concerned, were created to sit on the couch in your pajamas and binge watch the best and worst things that Netflix had to offer. And that is exactly what you were doing. You were three episodes into a Gilmore Girls marathon when suddenly you felt your stomach rumble, accompanied by a loud groan that you were definitely sure your downstairs neighbors had to have heard.
You slipped into a pair of boots and grabbed your jacket and keys as you walked out the door in search of food. You stopped at a diner just down the street, where all the wait staff and cooks knew you by name. After placing your usual order, a turkey club and an extra side of fries, you took to a booth to wait. Donna, the waitress who was always extra nice to you and never charged you for the extra fries, came around the counter holding a white paper bag containing your order.
“Why the long face, honey?” She asked you as she set your food in front of you.
You sighed as you stood from the table and picked up the bag. “Chris and Erin’s wedding is in a few months. I love them and I’m excited for them, but being the only bridesmaid that still has my soulmate tattoo is starting to get to me.”
Donna scoffed and rolled her eyes at you. “You know I didn’t meet my husband until I was 39?” She said. “I had my soulmate tattoo for 39 years. You’re young, you’re sweet, and you’re cute. You’ll be fine.” She said, placing a hand on your shoulder. “Who knows, maybe you’ll meet them at the wedding.”
“I do appreciate your never ending belief in me, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.” You told her with a laugh.
“You never know. People meet their soulmates all types of places.”
“I suppose.” You sighed, shrugging your shoulders. You took a few steps backwards, toward the door. “Thanks for the food, Donna. You know you’re my favorite.”
She laughed and walked back behind the counter. “Uh huh. Get out of here, trouble.” You winked at her quickly before turning and finally walking out the door.
Outside, the temperature had dropped slightly while you were inside the warmth of the cozy diner. You decided that if you were going to survive the four block walk back to your apartment, you absolutely had to have coffee to keep you warm. So, you crossed the street and walked a few doors down to a small cafe. When you opened the door you were met with a packed house. Clearly, you were not the only one who needed some warming up. You got in line and passed the time on your phone, occasionally switching your food from hand to hand when it got too heavy.
When it was finally your turn, you placed your order and walked to the other end of the counter to wait for your grande caramel macchiato. When the barista called out your drink, you thanked her with a smile. You made your way to the front door, finally ready to get home as quickly as possible with your food and coffee when it hit you. Like, literally hit you. The front door of the coffee shop swung open and whoever was on the other side walked directly into you.
You ended up smushing your hot coffee between your chest and his, successfully drenching both you and him in the process. The burn made you drop your bag, which thankfully stayed closed but you were sure that your sandwich would be a toppled mess when you got home.
“Oh, shit.” The guy said, putting his hands on your shoulders to steady you. You wished he hadn’t because the hot coffee seeping through your jacket and dripping from your hand had you wanting to smack him. “I’m so sorry. Are you okay?”
You looked at him. Well, you looked at his coffee stained chest before your eyes trailed up to his face. If you weren’t so pissed about your wasted coffee, you might even think he was kind of handsome. Tan skin, a few moles across one cheek. Black hair that was combed back, styled in a way that could only be described as a special kind of perfect. Then he smiled at you. Even though it was cold and the sun wasn’t technically out, you were completely sure that you saw the sun shine out of his smile.
You bent down to retrieve your dropped food. “It’s fine.” You told him. “Nothing a run through a washing machine won’t get out.”
“Are you sure?” He asked you, pulling his hands from your shoulders.
“Yeah. Sorry about your shirt.” You told him as you stepped around him and through the door.
“At least let me buy you a new coffee.”
“It’s fine.” You repeated. “This is hot and I just want to get it off as quickly as possible. Thank you, though.” You saw him open his mouth to speak again, but you turned away and started heading for home before he had the chance.
As you walked you couldn’t help but to think that he had some sort of nerve. Being that handsome after making you spill hot coffee all over yourself. Well, he was probably that handsome before that, but that wasn’t the point. You angry walked home, your feet carrying you faster than they had since you were forced to run the mile in high school. When you finally reached your front door, you unlocked it and set your now cold and likely ruined food in the kitchen before moving to the bathroom.
You unzipped your jacket, setting it on the counter while you finished undressing. You ran yourself a shower and let the warm water wash away the sticky coffee residue that was left on your chest and stomach. When you finished your shower, you changed back into a pair of fresh pajamas before throwing your damp clothes into the wash. So much for a lazy day.
As you fished your food from the paper bag on your kitchen table, you discovered that you were right. The fries were okay, no longer neatly contained in the styrofoam box that you’d gotten them in, but fine. Your sandwich hadn’t fared so well. It was still edible, yes, but you had to reconstruct it.
You finished dinner, put your clothes in the dryer and decided it was time for bed before anything else would have the chance to go wrong. You slid beneath your comforter and your cat curled up on the foot of your bed just like he did every night. You plugged your phone in to the charger next to your bed and began to scroll through Facebook. Erin had posted some of her and Christine’s engagement photos a few hours prior. Even in your slightly cynical state, you had to admit that they were a beautiful couple. You sighed as you looked over to your wrist at your stupid tattoo.
Instead of being met by the single word that had tormented you for as long as you could remember, all you saw was bare skin. Pure, unmarked skin. No tattoo. It was gone. You sat bolt upright in bed and rubbed your hand over your wrist. How could it be gone? It was impossible. When? Where? Who? Every question you could think of was flooding your mind at once as you stood from the bed and started to pace around your room, trying to remember every person you’d met today. You were definitely sure that it had been there this morning. But after that? You tried to look at it as little as possible, so it could have disappeared at any point between your shower this morning and getting coffee.
Fuck. Coffee boy.
Shit shit shit shit shit. You ran a hand through your hair as you continued to pace around your room. Eventually, you got tired of the confines of your bedroom, so you moved into the living room, then the kitchen and even the bathroom. You had to keep your feet moving to keep your mind from eating itself alive for letting you walk away from him. You didn’t even get his name. All you knew about him was that he was tall and didn’t pay attention to where he was going. Not a lot to go on.
You checked the time on the clock over the stove. 8:04 pm. Fuck. The coffee shop just closed. You couldn’t even go back and try to find him. What the hell were you supposed to do now? All you had was a basic description of a random guy you’d seen in a public place for a few minutes at an undetermined time this evening. What kind of missed connections ad would that be? You went back to your bedroom and called the only person you knew that might be able to help you. Your mother.
The phone rang a few times while you bit at your fingernails nervously. When she finally answered, you realized that you had no idea where to even begin. So, you just started with what you thought was the most important part.
“Mom.” You started with a sigh, bringing your hand to cover your eyes. “I uh… Well, my tattoo is gone.”
“Oh, my god!” She squealed into the phone. You pulled your phone from your ear and held it at arm's length until she was done getting excited over nothing. “So, tell me! Who is it? What’s their name? What do they look like? How old are they?” She had what seemed like a million and one questions. And you didn’t have an answer to a single one of them.
“That’s uh… Shit.” You stopped yourself, not entirely sure how you were supposed to continue.
“Y/N?” You mother asked, her voice laced in concern as the excitement quickly faded away. “Y/N, what is it? What’s wrong?”
“Okay, well.” You started again. You decided to bite the bullet and just tell her. “So, the thing is… I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?”
“No.”
“What don’t you know?”
“Anything.” You said with a laugh. How were you laughing right now? Nothing about this was funny. Maybe it was the nerves, or the fact that if you didn’t laugh you might end up crying. Either way you continued to giggle lightly as you detailed your encounter with your soulmate to your mother over the phone.
“Oh, wow.” She said when you finished your story. “That’s… Well, that’s quite the predicament, isn’t it?”
“Yeah, it is. And I don’t know what to do now. How am I supposed to find him again?” You asked her, praying that she would have all the answers.
“Baby, I don’t know.” She answered, sounding as defeated as you felt. Your shoulders slumped. If she can’t help you, then who the hell could?
“Okay.” You sighed, rubbing your eyes. “Well, thank you for listening to me ramble. I’m gonna try to sleep and figure this thing out tomorrow.” You and your mom said your goodnights to each other before hanging up. You had every intention of going to sleep and figuring this out tomorrow, just like you’d told her. But how were you supposed to sleep at a time like this?
You ended up scouring the internet all night, trying to find ways to get in touch with him. Most sites suggested that you make a post on every social media platform you could find. Give their description, where you’d seen them and at what time, and what their tattoo would have said, all the basic info. You tried your damnedest but all you could remember about him was that he was tall and tan. You couldn’t even remember what you’d said to him, so including what his tattoo would have said was completely out of the question.
You finally closed your laptop with a defeated groan just before 5 am. When you read the bight green numbers above the stove, you realized that the coffee shop would be opening soon. You ran to the bathroom and took a quick shower to wash the night of fruitless research from your body. You quickly got dressed and all but ran to the coffee shop. The same barista from yesterday greeted you as you pulled the door open and stepped inside.
“Good morning!” She called all too cheerily. “What can I get ya?”
“Actually, I was here yesterday.” You told her, slightly out of breath.
“Oh? Was there something wrong?”
“No, no.” You assured her. “But, right after I left there was a guy in here. Tall, black hair, a little bit handsome?”
She pursed her lips as she thought back to the night before. It took a few minutes but when you saw a smile came to her glossed lips you knew that she remembered him. “A little bit handsome?” She asked with a laugh. “He was more than a little bit handsome.”
“So you remember him?”
“Yeah, black house blend, I think. Why?”
“Have you seen him before? Is he a regular?” You asked, almost begging her to say that yes, he comes in every day at the same time and orders the same thing so that you could have a sliver of a chance of finding him again.
“I’m sorry,” She started, taking a step back from the counter with a worried look on her face. “I don’t really think I should tell-”
“He’s my soulmate.”
“Woah. Lucky you.” She giggled.
“No,” You sighed. You brought a hand up to your hair as you closed your eyes. “Not lucky me. He bumped into me and spilled my coffee and I was mad and I didn’t know that he was my soulmate so I left. I lost him and I’m really hoping that you can help me out here.”
“That sucks.” She said, raising her eyebrows. Yeah, no shit, Katie. “I’m sorry, but that was the first time I’ve ever seen him. Do you want me to ask the others?”
“Yeah. Yes, please.”
She turned her head and called for the rest of the staff that was on duty to come to the register. She quickly explained the situation to them and asked them if they’d ever seen your unidentified soulmate before last night. They all looked disappointed as they went down the line and told you that, no, they’d never seen him before.
Shit. This was bad.
You thanked them and denied Katie's offer for a replacement coffee. You were too upset to even think about caffeinating yourself right now. You walked home, your feet dragging beneath you as they lead you back to your front door. Your cat greeted you the same as he always did, but you ignored him as you sulked to your bedroom and flopped down on top of your comforter. Your eyelids were heavy, and you were far too emotionally and physically drained to even try to keep them open. Instead, you let yourself fall asleep in your jeans, hoping that you’d have a solution when you woke up.
It was nearly two in the afternoon when you finally woke up. You blinked your eyes a few times as you started to remember the night before. With a groan, you pushed yourself from your bed and made your way to the bathroom. Of course, you still had no idea what you were going to do. Eventually, you decided that maybe posting ads on social media was your only option.
You brewed a pot of coffee, opening your laptop at your kitchen table while you waited for it. Once it was done brewing you quickly poured yourself a cup and got to work. You included everything you could remember from the night before- The time and place, what little you could recall about his looks, and what your own tattoo had said. You found yourself hating that stupid tattoo more now than you ever had before. Oh. Such a basic word that millions of people say every single day without realizing. How the hell was this mystery guy supposed to remember that he had said it to you?
After typing and retyping the ad a few dozen times you finally decided that it was as good as it was gonna get and posted it to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Your posts got a few shares and retweets from your friends and family but none of them gained any ground. In the post you included your email address and asked whoever thought they might be it to email you a photo of themselves so you could be sure. The first few days you got fifty or so emails a day. None of them were him. After that, you got less and less until eventually you were lucky if you got one a day.
Days passed. Then weeks. Then months. Christine and Erin’s wedding was in two weeks and you couldn’t stop yourself from being bitter. You found yourself thinking that maybe Christine had been right, all those years ago while she sobbed on the floor of your bedroom. Maybe the soulmate tattoo system was broken. You hated yourself for letting him slip right through your coffee covered fingers that day. Day after day you continued to check your email and scour the internet, hoping and praying that somehow you would find him. And then one day, you did.
You were in line at the grocery store, a cart full of groceries and a head full of thoughts that refused to leave or even let up so you could get some damn sleep. You glanced over the magazine display casually. You felt your breath catch in your throat and your mouth go dry when you saw it. Saw him. Saw the headline.
5 Seconds Of Summer cancels upcoming world tour, citing “personal struggles” for bassist Calum Hood.
Was that you? Was this Calum Hood guy your soulmate? He was definitely one of the four boys on the cover, but you had no idea if he was the right one. The line moved and suddenly it was your turn. You quickly checked out and left the store, sure that the poor checkout boy had thought you were rude by the way you didn’t make small talk and all but forced him to scan quicker. But you didn’t care, you’d apologize to him later. After you found the person you’d been looking for for months.
You drove home, loudly cursing every red light that you caught as you went. You ran into your apartment, throwing the door open and hitting the wall so hard that the crash scared your cat who was sleeping on the couch.
“Sorry, bub.” You called out to him as he ran into your bedroom.
Opening your laptop you pulled up Google and typed in the name of the band that you’d seen on the cover of the magazine. You scrolled down to where the band members were listed and sure enough, Calum Hood was the man that had covered you in hot coffee and then disappeared.
You clicked on a link to his Twitter account. He wasn’t too active, you noticed. But the last few tweets that he had posted were definitely more than a little melancholy. Apparently, he had been looking for you for as long as you’d been looking for him. You found yourself laughing alone in your bedroom as you scrolled further down his Twitter feed. He was funny, that much was clear by the way he interacted with his fans.
But how? How could this even be happening? How could your soulmate be a world famous, honest to god, rockstar? It didn’t make sense. The more you went over it in your head, you all but convinced yourself that you had made it up. You were remembering it wrong. You had to be. You called up Christine and told her about what had happened.
“So you’re going to DM him, right?”
“Chris, have you listened to anything I just told you? This can’t be right.”
Christine laughed, a real genuine belly laugh. “I thought I was straight before I met Erin.” She told you. “The tattoos don’t lie, even if it doesn’t make sense.” She was right. She had been just as surprised as the rest of you when she met her soulmate, only to find out that she was a woman. “Listen, I’m not your mom so I’m not going to tell you what to do. All I’m saying is that if you don’t do it, you’ll probably spend the rest of your life wishing that you had.”
“Do you know how much I hate it when you’re right?” You asked her.
“I do.” She answered with a laugh. “Sucks for you that I’m always right, huh?”
“Shut up.” You told her before saying your goodbyes and hanging up. You sat back down in front of your laptop and opened his Twitter page again before remembering that he didn’t follow you, so you couldn’t message him. Just as you started to freak out, a text from Christine came though.
Stalked a little. Seems like he’s more active on Instagram. Try him there. And if it is him, he’s invited to the wedding.
You smiled to yourself and silently thanked the universe for giving you a best friend like Christine. As you opened the Instagram app and typed in his username, all of your nerves that you’d thought had gone away over the last two months suddenly came back in full force. Your hands shook as you looked through his pictures. Lots of pictures of his dog, which you loved but hoped that didn’t mean that he would have a problem with your cat. Soulmate or not, you and your cat were a package deal.
Just like when you’d written out the useless ad to try to find him, you typed and retyped your message to him. Eventually you settled for just the facts.
Hi, my name is Y/N. I think we might be looking for each other.
You hit send and waited. And waited some more. And then even more. After three hours had passed with him not even opening the message you decided that you had been wrong and that this had been a terrible mistake. You knew that it couldn’t be true. Why had you let Christine talk you in to sending that damn message? You made a mental note to call her and rip her a new one in the morning. But for now, it was time for you to retire to your bed and hide under your blanket until the end of time.
Days passed without a response from the man that you had thought was your soulmate. You were back at square one. You pushed all thoughts of Calum and soulmates from your mind as you helped Christine with the last minute things she needed for the wedding.
“So he never even opened it?” She asked you as you were helping her to make the centerpieces for the reception.
“Not the last time I checked.”
“When was that?”
“A few days ago, I think.”
“Well, check it again. He could be reading it right now.”
You rolled your eyes as you pulled your phone from your pocket and opened the Instagram app. Just like you had expected, he still hadn’t read your message. Every time you checked it, you felt more and more stupid for sending it in the first place. “I told you it wasn’t him anyway, so it doesn’t matter. Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be.”
“Y/N.” She said flatly. “He’s your literal fucking soulmate. Don’t be stupid. Of course it’s meant to be. It might take a little time, but it’s definitely meant to be.”
Days continued to pass until it was finally the day before your best friend’s wedding. Your whole life you had hoped that you’d be able to attend the event with your soulmate on your arm, but as you checked that damn message again it was clear that that wasn’t going to happen. You busied yourself the entire day with getting every single possible last minute detail taken care of. You made sure that the decorations were up and ready at the reception venue, double checked with each of the other bridesmaids that they had everything they needed, even called the woman who would be performing the ceremony to double check that she knew the right time and place for tomorrow.
When you realized that there was nothing left for you to do, it was just after 5 pm. You went home, ready to take a long, hot shower and relax for tomorrow. But as you stepped through the door of your apartment, your phone dinged. You quickly pulled it from your pocket and dropped it to the floor when you saw the notification that had come through.
Instagram: calumhood sent you a message!
Shit shit shit. This was it. He’d finally opened the message and was being nice enough to let you know that you were wrong, rather than ignoring you. That was it. It had to be. You bent over and picked your phone up from the floor cautiously opening the notification.
Holy shit.
You're “It's.”
I’ve been looking for you for months.
You felt faint as you read the messages over and over again. Three messages. Eleven words. One heart in your stomach as you tried to think of what you could possibly say to him.
It's?
It may have been a stupid message, but you had to know what the hell he meant when he called you It's.
That's what my tattoo said. After I bumped you, I apologized and you said “It's fine.” Which, btw, I'm still totally sorry about.
Before you could even type anything out, he sent another message.
What are you doing? I can fly you to LA tonight and we can finally properly meet. Maybe I can even buy you that coffee I owe you.
Your smile grew as you read his message and typed back your own reply.
I would, but I’m in my best friend’s wedding tomorrow ): rain check?
I can come there. I don’t have to go to the wedding, but I can’t wait any longer to see you again.
She actually said that if she was right about this, that you were invited.
Awesome. Then I’ll pack my dancing shoes and see you tomorrow. What’s the closest airport to you?
You quickly Googled airports near you and sent him the name of the the one that was closest.
Great. Just bought my ticket. I’ll see you tomorrow morning, soulmate.
You spent the rest of the night texting Calum, telling each other stories from your lives and gently making fun of yourselves for taking so long to find each other. You glanced at the clock and knew that if you were going to be of any use at the wedding, you had to go to sleep now. You said goodnight to Calum before rolling over and closing your eyes. Just as you were about to fall asleep, one last text from him came through.
Goodnight. I can’t wait to see you in the morning. I’m so glad we finally found each other.
The next morning you woke up to a few texts from Christine and one from Calum, wishing you a good morning and letting you know what time he would be getting dropped off at your apartment. You checked the time saw that you had about an hour and a half to get yourself ready and do whatever you could to make your apartment presentable before he arrived. You also noticed that he’d be getting there with only a few minutes to spare before you had to leave to be at the church on time.
You went about your normal morning routine- shower, brush teeth, makeup, hair, feed the cat- before slipping your bridesmaids dress on and making your way into the living room. You glanced at the clock over your stove as you passed it. Less than half an hour until Calum would be here. You mentally cursed at yourself for taking so long to get ready as you made a mad dash around your apartment. You picked up dirty laundry and shoved it all into the hamper in the bathroom, rinsed the dishes that were in the sink so they would at least appear clean even if they weren’t, and cleaned the cats litter box just before you heard a soft knock on your front door.
You froze, your hand stopping over the trashcan as you were about to throw something away. Just like that day in line at the grocery store, you felt your mouth go dry and your entire body suddenly felt warm. There was another knock, this one slightly louder, before you suddenly regained the ability to move. You walked to the door and took a few deep breaths as you smoothed the fabric of your dress with your hands.
When you finally turned the knob and opened the door, you almost swore you heard an actual chorus of angels. Calum stood in front of you in a black suit with no tie, his hair done up in the same way that it had been that day at the coffee shop, and a bouquet of roses in one hand. His suitcase sat at his feet, which were decked out in matte black boots. He looked incredible.
The two of you stood there for probably way too long, just looking at each other. He wore the same smile he had the day you’d first met him, the one that made it seem like the sun was shining even indoors. You finally took a step back and invited him in, your voice betraying your nerves as you did.
He giggled, and wow- his giggle was the most wonderful noise you’d ever heard in your life. “These uh… They’re for you. My sister helped me pick them. Said that girls like roses.” He rambled as he gestured the bouquet toward you. You took them from him with a smile before leading him into the kitchen to put them in water.
“Hope you don’t mind that we kind of have to leave, like right now.” You told him as you turned off the water. “I have to be at the venue soon.”
“Oh, yeah.” He stammered. “That’s fine. Where should I put my bag?” He asked, lifting the bag that you hadn’t even realized that he was holding.
“Just set it in there.” You told him, pointing behind him to your living room. “We can figure it out tonight.”
He did as you told him and followed you out the door and to your car. The drive to the venue was silent other than the songs that played quietly from the radio. It wasn’t an awkward silence, but it definitely wasn’t a comfortable one either. It was some sort of weird middle ground that you’d never experienced before. When you pulled up to the venue, you parked your car and turned to him.
“So, uh… Ready?” You asked.
“Ready as I’ll ever be, I guess.” He answered, rubbing his palms over the knees of his pants.
You stood from the car and lead him to the door of the venue. Checking the time on your phone you saw that you were fifteen minutes late, thanks to some unforeseen traffic during your drive. Christine was waiting by the door, impatiently tapping her foot when you walked in.
“I swear I have half a mind to-” She stopped in her tracks when she saw Calum walk in behind you.
“Half a mind to what?” You asked with a smirk as she gawked at him.
“Half a mind to ask you to introduce me to your friend here.” She answered sweetly.
“Christine, this is Calum. Calum, Christine.” You said to both of them in turn.
“The Calum?” She asked him.
He laughed and you saw a rosy tint come to his cheeks. “I think so.” He answered, turning his smile to you.
“Yes.” You told her, returning his smile. “The Calum. You said he could come.”
“I did say that. We’ll have to add a seat, but you can sit with the rest of our friends if you want.”
“Whatever works for you. I don’t want to be intrusive.”
Christine scoffed and rolled her eyes. “Please. You're my best friend’s soulmate. You’re not being intrusive.”
You felt your body get warm again. Neither of you had said the word out loud to each other yet. But when you finally looked up at him and saw the widest grin you’d seen from him yet, all of those nerves melted away instantly.
Soulmate.
Calum Hood, the beautiful man standing next to you, was your soulmate. You could definitely get used to saying that. Out loud or just to yourself, you didn’t care.
“I’ll have one of the guys pull out another chair. They’re right up there at front.” Christine told him, pointing in the direction of your friends. “You can head that way if you want, but I need to steal Y/N in a few minutes.” She finished, hurrying away toward your friends. You watched her walk up to them and within twenty seconds all of their heads snapped from her to you.
“Looks like the cat’s out of the bag.” You told him with a laugh.
“I don’t think Binx would appreciate being put in a bag in the first place.”
“I told you his name?”
“No, but he’s all over your Instagram.” He answered with another giggle. He placed one hand on your wrist and leaned down to kiss your cheek. “I’ll see you up there?”
“Yeah. Meet back at my car after?”
“Okay.” He grinned at you again before taking a few steps away, toward your group of friends who were all excitedly waiting for him.
The wedding was lovely, as you knew it would be. Both Christine and Erin looked beautiful beyond words in their dresses. Their vows were wonderfully written and heartfelt. You dabbed your eyes a few times through the ceremony. You didn’t know if you were emotional because you were happy for your best friend, or because you were happy that you’d finally found your own soulmate. Either way, you were grateful for Erin’s mom, who stood from her seat to hand you a tissue halfway through the ceremony.
When the ceremony finished, you met with Calum at your car just like you’d agreed and drove across town to the reception venue. You lead Calum through the doors and to the table that you’d been assigned to. Once again, an extra chair had to be added for him, but nobody complained. Everyone knew who he was and why he was here and had no problem at all making room for him.
The two of you ate, drank, and were merry all night long. Even though you’d only met hours before, it was like you’d been the best of friends for years. As Calum stood to clear your plates, Forever by The Beach Boys started playing from the large speakers set up near the dancefloor. “Oh, wow.” You sighed, your eyes falling closed as you put a hand over your chest. “I love this song. Haven’t heard it in ages.” You heard Calum set the plates back down on the table. You opened your eyes to find him still standing, one hand extended toward you.
“Care to dance?” He asked. You took his hand and allowed him to lead you to the dancefloor. He wrapped his free hand around your waist while you wrapped yours around his neck. You brought your intertwined hands up between your chests as you started to move in slow circles around the dancefloor. Calum began to softly sing the lyrics to you when you rested your head on his shoulder. Even if you hadn’t already loved the song, this moment would have been enough to make it your favorite of all time.
“Have I told you that you look beautiful tonight?” He asked during a musical break. You lifted your head from his shoulder to look into his deep brown eyes. Before you could even come up with a witty response, Calum was slowly moving his face closer to yours. Your eyes shut as he closed the space between your mouths.
Sparks.
Fireworks.
Electricity.
Lightning.
Butterflies.
Every single cliche thing you could ever possibly imagine. All at once, and all breathtaking. You’d kissed other people before, sure. But this kiss? You were completely sure that kissing Calum was what you were meant to have been doing your entire life.
The kiss was short, but damn if it wasn’t powerful. You both wore matching grins when he pulled away, breaking the kiss.
“Woah.” You breathed.
“Yeah.” He agreed, a giggle falling from his smiling lips as he leaned in again.
This kiss was longer, and somehow even better than the first. You had no idea that kissing someone could make you feel like this. Like your entire world was suddenly brighter with his lips on yours. You smiled into the kiss as he took his hand away from yours, moving it to your cheek while the other stayed wrapped around your waist. Your own hand stayed resting flat against his chest as he pulled you closer to him.
You weren’t sure how long you stayed in his arms on the dancefloor after the song ended. At some point, he moved his hand from your cheek to join his other that was behind your back, linking his fingers over your waist. Your mind was completely wrapped up in the way his hands felt as he held you close to him. The way that his lips fit so perfectly into yours was some kind of magic. One of you had broken the first kiss, and now you were shuffling together, exchanging grins and quick kisses. Nobody in the world that was not the two of you mattered.
“Hey!” You faintly heard someone calling beside you. “Y/N!” You turned away from Calum to see Erin with a disposable camera in hand. She held it up and gestured vaguely to you and Calum. “Want a picture?” You leaned your head into Calum’s chest, your cheek resting on your own hand as you grinned at her. She smiled back to you as she took the picture, the flash a little brighter than you had expected.
“Make me a copy when you print those?” You asked as she put the camera down.
“Of course,” She smiled at you again. “Trust me, you’re gonna love it.”
When she walked away, snapping off more pictures as she went, you turned your attention back to Calum. He looked tired. Happy, giddy, a little goofy with the grin that was plastered on his face. But still very tired. You remembered that he had been awake for hours before you, and had a flight first thing in the morning so it wasn’t surprising at all that he would be tired by now.
“Wanna take off?” You asked him quietly.
“Nah,” He answered, shaking his head. “We’re havin’ fun. And it’s your best friend’s wedding. We can stay all night.”
“You’re sweet.” You told him, causing another crimson blush to crawl over his cheeks. “But you look like you’re about to collapse. I just have to say goodbye to Chris and we can leave.”
“Ya sure?”
“I’m sure.” You told him, reluctantly pulling yourself away from him. You took his hand in yours, linking your fingers with his as you lead him to wear you saw Christine and Erin on the other side of the reception venue. They both smiled at you as you got closer. Christine had been drinking wine all night and was slightly tipsy as she threw her arms around your shoulders.
“My best friend!” She slurred into your ear as she hugged you.
“You good?” You asked with a laugh as you pulled away from her.
“I’m great!” She cried. “I got fuckin’ married today!”
“Yeah, I was there.” You told her, laughing even more.
“You were! You were there for me for all of it. And I’m gonna be there when you get married, too.” Christine told you, suddenly getting very serious as placed an unsteady hand on your shoulder.
“Thank you, Chris. But I think we’re going to leave soon. We’re kind of tired.” Christine seemed sad, but hugged both of you nonetheless before allowing you to leave, with the promise that you would call her the next day.
As you drove back to your apartment, the same silence enveloped the two of you. This time was different, though. Just like earlier, neither of you spoke as you listened to the songs on the radio. When you were just about halfway home, Calum’s phone started ringing. He had plugged it in in your car during the reception and completely forgot about.
“Ah, shit.” He sighed as he picked it up to answer it. “Hey, Ash.” You could only hear one side of the conversation, but whoever was on the other end seemed to be upset if Calum’s expression was anything to go off of.
“Yeah, I’m sorry, I just-” He started before being cut off again. He smiled to himself as whoever it was spoke to him. “I know, I know, I know. But there wasn’t-” You found yourself smiling with him as you listened to his fractured responses.
“I’m fine!” He called out suddenly. “I’ll text ya tomorrow, mate. I promise.” He laughed. “I’m not dead and I’ll come home soon… Okay, yeah, bye.” He was smiling, shaking his head slightly as he hung up.
“What was that all about?” You asked as you turned into the parking lot of your apartment complex.
He laughed again and looked up from his phone to look at you. “I might have forgotten to tell people that I was leaving.”
“Calum!”
“I didn’t think about it.” He said as you parked your car. He opened his door and got out, stretching his arms over his head as he stood up straight. “My roommate is with my dog, and that was all I cared about. I just wanted to get here and see you again.”
You got out of the car and he met you in front of it. He wrapped his arms around your waist and you rested your hands on his arms. “I wanted to see you again, too.” You told him with a smile. “But I do not need your friends thinking that I kidnapped you.”
He smiled back down to you before placing a kiss to your hair. “I’ll call tomorrow and fill ‘em in. But for now, I think I need some sleep.”
You stepped away from him and took his hand in yours as you lead him into your apartment building. As you got to your front door, you couldn’t help but to smile as you unlocked the door and walked inside. Calum’s suitcase was still sat next to your couch in the living room.
“I’m gonna go get changed, if ya wanna get comfortable.” You told him as you started down the hallway to your bedroom.
“Yeah, should I just set up out here?”
“You can if you want, but my bed is definitely more comfortable.”
“Is that so?” He asked as he picked up his suitcase and started to follow you.
You nodded as you opened your bedroom door, flipping on the light as Calum and Binx followed you inside. “Oh, yes.” You told him. “Like sleeping on a cloud.”
Calum giggled and set his suitcase down by the wall next to your bedroom door. “I think I’ll be the judge of that.” You pulled some pajamas from your dresser while Calum kneeled in front of his suitcase to retrieve his own.
“I’ll be back.” You said as you walked to the door. He stood up straight, a pair of black sweatpants in hand.
He put his hand around your waist and pulled you into him. “Hurry back, love.”
You could have melted on the spot. You leaned into him and kissed him, putting your hand on his cheek as you smiled into the kiss. When you pulled away, he was grinning again before he kissed your forehead softly.
You went into the bathroom across the hall and got undressed, changing into your pajamas quickly. After your makeup was off and your hair was brushed, you walked back into your bedroom and were met by the cutest sight you think you’d ever seen.
Calum was lying on his side on the far side of the bed, facing toward the door while he played on his phone. Your cat was curled up next to him. He was purring loudly as he snuggled into Calum’s bare stomach.
“I think he likes you.” You laughed as you lifted your comforter to join them in bed.
“Well, I think that I like you.” Calum said, wiggling his eyebrows as you moved closer to him.
“That’s good, since you’re my soulmate and all.”
“And I’m so fuckin’ lucky that I am.” He was careful not to disturb Binx as he wrapped his arm around your waist under the blanket. You moved toward him and caught his full lips with yours. The kiss was soft, sweet, unrushed in a way that made you forget everything that wasn’t Calum.
“We should sleep.” You sighed after pulling away from him.
“We should.” He agreed, moving in to kiss you again.
“I can’t sleep if you keep kissing me.” You said with a laugh.
“Don’t wanna stop.” He said, a slight whine in his sleepy voice.
You don’t know how long you stayed up that night, but by the time you did finally fall asleep, the sun was starting to peek in through your curtains. You talked and laughed, occasionally stealing kisses in the dark until neither of you could keep your eyes open any longer. Both of you had bright, albeit sleepy, smiles on your faces as you finally allowed yourselves to be pulled into the most comfortable sleep you’d had in years. Just before you fell asleep, you thought to yourself that you could definitely get used to falling asleep in Calum’s arms, with Binx curled up between the two of you.

Are you attracted to the last person that kissed you? Yeah, of course. What did you do yesterday? I spent the morning hungover because I drank the night before, but I had to be in class by 10 AM so I had no choice but to drive to school. My classes were thankfully pretty chill, and the most random thing that happened was my prof making us take a speed typing test in the middle of our class lol. Otherwise, it was a normal school day. Something you really want right now? More moneyyyy. I blew most of it last Wednesday when me and my girlfriend had drinks up in Marco Polo. Hotels obviously jack up their prices on everything, and alcohol is no exception so what I’d pay for a cocktail in my school’s area got quadrupled in Marco Polo. But I had a loooot of fun that night, so I can’t say I regret it even though I lost most of my allowance. If you could seek revenge on someone would you? [continued from yesterday because I just had suuuch a hectic week] Like I’ve said, the idea of revenge is something I daydream about just to feel internally satisfied, but I never feel the need to act on it. How long have you liked the person you like? Six, maybe even seven years.
Are you happy with the way things are going? For the most part. I could go with less worry/anxiety, but I mean I can’t say I’m miserable. Would you ever get a tattoo? Only if I feel like the time is right, which is a FAR cry from “get tattoos of all the things you love”-era Robyn lmao. Do you think you will be in a relationship 3 months from now? Yes. April is my birth month, and I’d hate to be single by then lol. What plans do you have for tomorrow? I finally have my rest day tomorrow, which I’m fuuuucking stoked about. It’s been such a busy busy week and I’m just so relieved that all I have to do tomorrow is sit and lounge around. Has a friendship ended recently that you wish had not? Not really. I kinda cut off friendships with two guys because they annoyed me over some issue, but the thing is they’re part of our high school group so I can’t avoid them forever – I see them when we have reunions, but I don’t mingle with them. What are you listening to right now? I can hear the electric fan whirring in front of me but in my head Simmer by Hayley Williams is playing as loud as ever. Do you and your last ex hate each other? No. What are you afraid of? I hate uncertainty the most, but some other things I’m afraid of are failing in general, videos that make me stressed like footage of collapsing/fainting people or racist people making tirades on public transport, flying cockroaches, sharp objects, and fire. When was the last time you were sick? Some time last year, I got a fever for like two hours but I was totally fine after. But the last time I was SICK sick was sometime in 2017 – but even that was only an overnight thing. I don’t remember the last time I was sick for over a day. Do you tend to waste a lot of money? LMAOOO don’t even remind me. I literally have a single P50 bill left in my wallet – that’s less than a dollar to ya. Do you have trust issues? No, not at all. Do you think this year will be better than last? I’m genuinely unsure, and I’d rather not guess or mull over it. 2020 is going to be a year of so much change – graduating college, getting my first job, maybe moving out for the first time?, not knowing if my girlfriend is going to pursue a master’s abroad, what that means for us, etc. Big things are waiting, and I HATE the uncertainty of it all. I take surveys to forget, so please don’t remind me of things I go here to forget, haha. Have you ever regretted kissing someone? No. Are you a jealous person? I can be, but like I’m not obsessed with being jealous. When was the last time you got a haircut? 2018. I desperately need a dramatic haircut. Do you know anyone that smokes weed? Yeah I know people who’ve told me about it, but I’m sure there are more people I know that haven’t told me they do weed. Who is the last person you rode in a car with? I was with Luisa and Hannah and for the first time in a long time, I wasn’t the one driving! Do you look more like your mom or your dad? I ask people this and they always tell me I’m a perfect mix. Apparently the top half of my face looks like my dad, and the bottom half is all my mom. Are there any stressful situations in your life? Yep a little bit yep yep yep. If you were caught cheating would you fess up? If I was already caught, I’d be incredibly stupid to still deny it so yeah, I’d confess. The last time you honestly felt broken? Maybe Monday? Idk, I cried pretty hard that day, harder than I normally would. What do you really want right now? I want this stupid internet speed to be faster because I need to send emails ASAP, and I need some good fucking food. I am not the happiest camper right now lmao. Best thing about the last person you chatted on facebook? He’s literally the most reliable dude ever. I can always depend on him to help me out no matter how last-minute it is. Best thing about the last person you talked to in person? She’s generous. When was the last time you shaved your legs? Yesterday. Is there someone you wish you were closer to? At this point, not really. I’m happy with my circle and there haven’t been new people who entered my life recently. Have any addictions? Nope. Are you anything like your siblings? We’re all reserved, but then again out of all the three of us I’m still the biggest extrovert and I’m also probably the one who finds it easy to blend in with most groups. But yeah, we all definitely have a layer of extreme shyness in us. We’re also never upfront about our feelings, so when we cry we do it in the privacy of our own rooms, or if we’re upset we rant about it to our own friends. Have you ever had a stalker? I don’t think so. Have you ever received an injury from a hook up? LOL what? No I haven’t. That sounds wild though. What did you last eat? A brownie and a sip of coffee. What was the best concert you have been to? PARAMORE. UGH. THEY HAVE THE BEST CONCERTS. I’ve seen them twice and I plan to see them three, four, and the next bajillion times. Paramore forever <3 Who is the last person you hugged? I’m not 100% sure. Maybe Laurice. Do you have any good friends of the opposite sex? I have a couple, yeah. Are you keeping anything from your best friend(s) now? This survey is a big secret for one, lmao. Where do you get your clothes? It depends. I shop everywhere so I get my clothes from a variety of places. They’re mostly from independent shops/stalls that pop up once in a while at malls, though. Do you have a secret you've never told anyone? [continued YET AGAIN from last night because I am just one big exhausted bean] Again, this Tumblr is a pretty big secret. Is there one person in your life that can always make you smile? There are several people who meet this category. Would you rather sleep alone or with someone? I like sleeping with someone only if they’re my significant other. Otherwise, I like my own space when I sleep. Have you ever lived with a girlfriend/boyfriend? No, I haven’t. When was the last time something bothered you? I am bothered at this moment, hence the survey-taking haha. Who was the first male you talked to today? My dog. But if he doesn’t count, it was Andrew. Are you completely over your past relationships? I’ve only been with one person. Do you get attached to people easily? No, it only ever happens with select people. But when I get attached, it happens hard. Are you currently looking forward to anything? Uhhhh sure. I’m dreading most of this week but my high school’s annual school fair is happening this Friday and Saturday and that’s the only thing I’m excited for. Do you believe in love? Yes. Let's be honest, have you ever been played by someone? Can’t say I have. Have you ever played someone? Yes, this I’ve done. I still feel bad about it occasionally but I’m sure the person has long gotten past it. What is currently on your mind? How sad I am and that I have to focus on this survey so I can be distracted. Would it hurt seeing the last person you kissed, kissing someone else? Of course. How many piercings have you had in your life? Just two. Who else is in the room with you? I’m the only one in the dining room but my brother is also here downstairs. Have you ever been beside someone while they were throwing up? [It’s 12 hours later. This is the absolute slowest I’ve ever worked on a survey lmao] No, it was always the other way around HAHAHA Did you eat breakfast today? I haven’t yet but I’m not feeling hungry so I might just settle for a cup of coffee. When was the last time you cried? A few minutes ago watching a clip from an NBA game having a moment of silence for Kobe Bryant. I was never into basketball but we DID have a copy of NBA Live 2003, and whenever I played it I always used the Lakers team so that I got to play as either Shaq or Kobe, so I’m sad and shocked, to say the least. Do you like tea? Just sugary iced tea. None of that herbal stuff. When was the last time you took a nap? Yesterday afternoon. What song is stuck in your head? Simmer, by Hayley Williams. As has been the case in the last four days. Do you have a TV in your room? I used to, but my brother would always be the one using it to play his video games so I eventually just gave it to him. Have you ever broken a bone? Nope. And I’m always extra careful so that I never have to go through such an injury. Have you ever had stitches? ^ Same answer. Are you wearing a sweatshirt? No...it’s starting to get warmer for sweatshirts now :( Have you taken a shower in the last 24 hours? Yes. Are there things in your life that you'll never be able to get over? Of course. There’s been a fair share of deaths, betrayals, abusive family shit that I’ve had to go through and that aren’t easy to forget. Can you remember who you liked this time last year? Yes. What's one physical flaw you'd like to fix about yourself? Straightening my teeth. What do you do when you're feeling extremely nervous? Uh it depends on whatever helps me at that time. I’d pace around, fiddle with my eyebrows, breathe deeply, shake my hands rapidly, bite my nails, etc. Do you have a hard time letting go? Yes. Do you think someone is thinking about you right now? I doubt it. What do you plan on doing now? Making my cup of coffee and taking another survey to make up for the embarassment that is taking three days of finishing this one lmao.

Time to let go
I lost one of my best friends. 30 years of friendship means absolutely nothing to someone who is too addicted to see anything except what their mind has created for their ego to sit safely.
She accused me of being fake, not being there for her when she was abandoned.
Let me take you back. 2004ish, we had a massive falling out because she stole from me and then when I directly asked her about it, she lied to my face. When she finally had the guts to tell me about it, two weeks later, I had decided that I was going to humiliate her the way she had me. I told her to come over, which to my surprise she did. She told me her story and why she did what she did. That was not satisfactory. I then proceeded to B*T*H slap her as hard as I could for a 14-year-old. She bounced. She moved away. Then the next summer, after not communicating with her for all that time, I seen her, and I had accepted that I was wrong for handling the situation the way I did. I apologized and she accepted, but things were never the same after that. I never fully trusted her again. She brought her new boyfriend over to meet me and my parents. I HATED him. He gave off a very bad vibe, but it was her happiness, so I didn't mess with it. Not like she would have listened to me. Fast forward to 2013ish. We reconnected. We got matching tattoos. we spent a lot of time together. It was great. Then things took a turn again. 2015 she disappeared. 2018 she pops back up. and she's going through some drama again with her then boyfriend. ugh. and our relationship has always been strained.
Now, EVERY single time she has ever called me and needed me for any reason I have always answered. I NEVER made an excuse as to why I couldn't. I always found a way. Every single time I called her she couldn't deal with me. So, when shit started hitting the fan for me in my own life. My dad dying. Death. Drama. An almost divorce. Rape. Death. I mean, name it and it's happened to me and my family. I never once called her. because I wasn't going to burden her with my shit when she was quite clearly going through her own shit. (Look at her Facebook because she posts EVERYTHING there).
A little background on me as a friend. I am not going to unfriend you without at least giving you a chance to hear me out and maybe coming to a reconciliation. She made it VERY clear in her messages that there was no way possible for her to be there for me because I am too much. (Excuse me?) Okay. Well, since by your own admission you can't be there for me, fine. I gave her another chance and would comment on her stuff occasionally, just letting her know that I am still there for her, cheering her on.
When she posted something that I didn't agree with. I explained myself pretty clear, I think. Apparently not, for her. She then proceeded to verbally attack me and tell me that I have been a fake friend since her ex-boyfriend (2017 Larry) had told her that I sided with him. Well, lemme explain. I didn't side with him, but I did tell him (and her) that he was one of the better boyfriends that she's had in a long time. I didn't agree with the way she was treating him. He was generous and kind. I don't know the whole story, okay, but seriously?! what the hell did you expect from people when you're treating them like shit and other people can see it too?
She projected all her rage and bullshit on to me and another one of her friends. I gave her both barrels again. I told her every single time she had fucked up as a friend and person. Yes, I did it on Facebook. I put it out there for the entire world to see. You don't get to verbally attack me online and think there's no consequences. I aired all her dirty laundry, just like she did mine. Was it the right thing to do? Nope.
Which brings me to my thoughts today. We discussed friends and friendships today in church. It got me thinking, what is a friend? A true friend is someone who reflects all the good in you and mirrors the bad. (don't get it twisted, by mirroring your bad, I mean they call you out when you're fucking up as a friend/person)
I will be your biggest fan. The loudest voice in the stands cheering for you. Even in the times when we're not talking or being friends, I will be in the corner watching you and cheering for you. I don't wish bad anyone, simply because whatever you send out in the world will ALWAYS come back to you.
I guess I just needed to get this all off my chest. I don't want pity. I don't want to cause drama. I don't want people to look up this person and tell her what a piece of shit she is. I just needed to get this off my chest for my own peace. I needed to tell the universe that I am hurting so that maybe the universe can guide me back to the path I am supposed to be on.
I am not perfect. I never claimed to be. I will own my own shit. Ya know?! I will always take responsibility for my mess.

How Long is Eighty Days - Part One
I first met her just as first semester began. Palms sweating, I glanced around the lecture hall. We had just been instructed to introduce ourselves to the people next to us. From what I could see, most had classmates they knew from high school. I, on the other hand, had been the only person in my grade to throw my lot into this particular course. No familiar faces loomed out at me. And all the others were already deep in conversation.
That was when she turned towards me with a beatific smile on her face. Her hazel eyes were filled with a mix of kindness and warmth as she took me in. Had it not been the very first day and the very first subject for the under, with the weight of scrutiny heavy on my shoulders, I might have offered an articulate response. Instead, a strange gurgling had my cheeks aflame when I realised that it had come from my throat. There went my first impression. I waited for her to turn away and condemn me as the ‘strange one’ with a look of bemusement, but she surprised me by offering a sympathetic ear.
“I’ve often been told that I take the words right out of someone’s mouth,” she whispered conspiratorially. “The first day is always the worst, isn’t it? Don’t worry. I won’t tell anyone if you don’t.”
A nervous smile touched my lips. “You don’t seem all that intimidated.”
She grinned. “I’ll have you know that I’ve always been good at power. But the truth of the matter is that I’d much rather be back home instead of facing this gauntlet of lectures and tutorials. Meeting new people is always a frightening experience.”
“Jamie,” I said, sticking out my hand.
She eyed it for a good half second before giving it a proper shake. “My parents have always been old fashioned. It’s a little embarrassing, come to think of it, but you can call me Cassie. Although my full name is Cassandra.”
“Glad to make your acquaintance. Cassandra.”
“Now you’re just making fun of me,” she accused, though humour laced the words.
Before we could delve further into conversation, the lecturer was quick to catch our attention and the lesson resumed. I don’t quite remember much of that first hour for Sociology and Anthropology. Although I was quick to take notes, my mind remained focused on the feel of Cassie’s hand in mine and the sweet citrusy perfume she wore.
The next time I saw her, I had just taken shelter underneath the glass overhang of the beloved central business school as the autumnal rains pelted down. Like the intelligent creature I was, I had decided to wait until the middle of the week to purchase all the necessary textbooks – believing the lines would be shorter.
Cassie was with a group of what I assumed were her old classmates. The way they exchanged banter reminded me of all those movies where the popular girl was surrounded by simpering sycophants. And yet, I envied each and every one of them as they laughed at one of Cassie’s jokes or gossiped about the things they had gleaned from the first week. It was irrational. But by the time she and her posse had disappeared from view, I was on the verge of turning green. Books in hand, I stepped out from my hiding spot with nary an umbrella and allowed myself to be drenched as I trudged towards the bus stop.
Needless to say, several days later I was sick in bed and trying to make sense of the words printed on the water damaged page. It was a miracle that it had not already turned into pulp during the deluge.
That would be the last time I ever forgot to bring something to stave off the inclement weather.
 --
How long is eighty days? Break it down into hours and you get one thousand nine hundred and twenty. Minutes-wise, there’s a whopping total of one hundred nineteen thousand two hundred. In those burgeoning and fleeting moments of romance, each and every single of those precious minutes felt like a millennium that passed in the blink of an eye. At least, that’s how I saw the following twelve weeks as Cassie and I slowly became more comfortable in each other’s company.
Often, I found myself counting down the seconds until I would see her in the lecture we shared. Afterwards, we would head out to the library lawn, going over the readings for class. When the fancy struck her, she would convince me into skipping my next class and we would head to the nearby beach. Despite the fact that winter was fast encroaching, we would still see tourists flocking to the golden sands.
“Did you see that?” I would ask, pointing to one of the hapless families trying to take a selfie as they were battered by high winds. “You can tell which ones are from the mainland. They’re not typically dressed for a day out in the sun. Umbrellas, long sleeves – those are your hints that they’ve not been here long.”
In those too-brief moments, we flirted and teased. For me, they were the highlights of each week and I savoured the time I could spend with Cassie. And when she slowly but surely introduced me to her circle of friends, I learned quickly to adapt. Some were friendly, eager to see a new face. Others could have done well with a lesson in manners.
And as exams loomed ever closer, we would occasionally go out to the Roundhouse or the heart of the city, drinking and clubbing into the early hours. It was a different experience.  The idea of grinding away and hoping to catch the eye of someone who might be interested left a bad taste in my mouth, but by the time the deadlines were knocking on the door, I took to them like a fish to water.
Of course, my grades slid a bit but I was quick study when it came to revising. It isn’t a simple brag to say that I aced most of my classes. That is, everything except for Sociology and Anthropology. Suffice it to say, I managed to scrape by with a passing mark but my overall standing took a significant hit. Cassie, on the other hand, fared much better. But she had a talent for constructing essays with surprising depth that seemed to elude me. When the marks came in, she was in the top ten percent of the class.
Thus, semester break began. And with it, the school holidays.
It was the perfect time to learn about each other’s habit beyond the confines of university. We would organise dates to the local cinema and perhaps follow it up with a karaoke session. Sometimes we would go as a group with a mixture of her friends and mine. Other times, it would just be the two of us. Those were the moments I cherished. Being alone with Cassie and talking about anything that came to mind.
I swiftly learned that though she had enrolled into a humanities degree, her heart longed for the sciences. Cassie was someone that was not afraid of getting her hands dirty. Coding and circuits and trying to figure out how the world worked. Those were the topics that interested her. But when she had expressed her desire to pursue a degree in engineering, her parents had been adamant. They had quashed any and all dreams before they even had the opportunity to take flight. Cassie bristled as she recounted how her father had sat her down in the living room and told her explicitly that her career path was set in stone. It was expected that she take over the accounting for their family-run business. And with her older sister absconding overseas, it was she that was expected to carry on the legacy.
Yet despite her frustrations, Cassie was quick to shut down any encouragement from me. She would offer me a rueful grin and shake her head. “Thanks Jamie but it really doesn’t matter what I do at uni. There’re always online courses and I’ve found that it’s actually quite fun trying to figure out all these things by myself. I mean, it can be difficult to understand why something has gone wrong but that’s why we have Google, right?”
But all of our alone time quickly came to an end in July. I can’t rightly say that my mother was negligent but she often relied on me to take care of Derrick, particularly on the days when he did not have any actual tutoring. Younger than me by four years, he stood a good twenty centimetres taller. I hated that. Having seen him swaddled in diapers (and even helped change a few) it simply seemed unfair that Derrick was all but looming over me in Year 10. I tried, once, to see if I might be able to break his kneecaps when the first signs of a growth spurt were underway but dad put a stopper to those plans.
Actually, that was a lie. And it goes to show what a poor taste I have in jokes. Derrick, the loyal brother, would find the humour in it but often my sense of funny has a tendency to put off most upstanding citizens. But Cassie had one just as black as my own. Or, at the very least, she was appreciative of the sarcasm.
Derrick and I, though, we’re close. Perhaps the four year age gap worked in our favour. What fights we did have were short-lived. Mostly because he had a face that everyone could love. And we often bantered in the privacy of our shared study room. That, of course, didn’t mean I wanted him around when I was with Cassie.
After our first ‘date’ with him playing the third wheel, Derrick was quick to pounce upon me for more details. “She seems nice.”
“What?” I asked, looking up from my bowl of noodles.
“Cassandra. I like her. Not as much as that other girl who could draw those henna tattoos, of course. What happened to her by the way?”
“She moved interstate,” I said. “I suppose being up in the Sunshine State is better than settling for physiotherapy. Alice was always ambitious and well, I was never one to put myself out there. The distance didn’t help much either.”
“That’s a shame,” said Derrick as he worked on his maths problems. Finally he set aside pencil and scientific calculator and stretched. Pushing aside his workbook, he finally asked the one question I had been dreading for days on end. “But come on Jamie, when are you going to make it Facebook official? I’ve seen the way you look at Cassandra and she seems interested as well.”
Despite the fact that he had lost most of his baby fat and there was an inkling of facial hair, Derrick still managed to look like a lost puppy. His pleading brown eyes begged for an answer and though my heart could be as cold as ice, it could not resist the pull.
A resigned sigh escaped my lips. I had wrangled with the question for so long that I had pushed it to the back of my mind. Did it really matter whether or not we took the next step? But what if she only saw our relationship as merely platonic? For several weeks I had been caught in a pit of paralysis and unable to climb my way out of it. The idea of placing my heart on the line and waiting for it to be crushed was not something I could idly do. And yet, what if Cassie felt the same?
“This is Houston and we have a problem. Contact with Jamie has been lost. I repeat: contact with Jamie Zhang has been lost. Hello? Is there anyone still there?” Derrick always knew the best way to break my train of thought. I tossed a mean glare his way as he merely shrugged. “If you don’t want to talk about it, that’s fine.”
“I do. It’s just…I’m scared. What if Cassie sees me as just a friend?”
Derrick slung an arm around my shoulder. “Chin up, Jamie. There’s plenty of other fish in the sea if the worst happens. But you know what mum keeps saying about opportunities. You’ll miss all the ones you don’t take. So go out there!”
It was cheesy and clichéd. But Derrick always knew what to say. For a fifteen year old going through puberty, he could be surprisingly worldly even if he was still a tad obsessed with shonen anime that included the likes of Attack on Titan and One-Punch Man, often playacting scenes in our backyard. I suppose it is true: no-one is perfect.
 --
Heeding the advice from my brother, I asked Cassie out to talk on the day just before uni was to resume. She was eager to watch the latest winter blockbusters that had hit the silver screens. Once the movie was over, we strolled down through the bustling city streets, avoiding the main road. Years had gone by but the light rail was still under construction. Rumour had it that it would go on for ten or more years, diverting traffic from the centre of town. Finally, we found ourselves in the Botanic Gardens, overlooking the harbour.
It was not how I imagined where the confession would be, but surrounded by all the different species of flora that were still flourishing despite the chill helped push me over the edge.
Taking a deep breath, I turned towards Cassie. “I like you,” I said. Terror and a small spark of hope warred in my chest. This was now or never. Do or die. I had made myself vulnerable and now my nerves were all jumbled together as I waited patiently for her reply.
“I like you too,” she replied but it was clear that my words had her puzzled. “What brought this on, Jamie? Did you think I was going to leave after all the things we did last semester? Don’t forget, we actually have a lecture and a tutorial together.”
It was enough to confirm the feelings I had. Whether it was madness that gripped me or something else, I could not be quite sure. Yet, despite all the barriers I had put up to stop myself from giving into my base impulses, I leaned forward and captured her lips with mine.

Get to know me
Tagged by @symphonyalpha (I forgot the URL for a second and was like, “Why isn’t Jaewhy showing up when I type it in the user mention???” lol).
Rules: Answer these 92 statements and tag 20 people.
Last: 1. Drink: Barley water, because that’s what my family drinks ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 2. Phone call: My grandma, telling me what time she needed me to drive her to her doctor’s appointment. 3. Text message: To my little brother, telling him to STFU because he kept sending me dumb shit on iMessage. 4. Song you listened to: Does SIF count? If so, “Sore wa Bokutachi no Kiseki”. If not, I was headbanging to “Paradise Lost” by Chihara Minori after dropping my grandma off at her friend’s place the other day, lol. 5. Time you cried: tbh I probably teared up a little when I was watching the footage from the Lantis preview of the Aqours 1st Live BD/DVDs 。゚( ゚இωஇ゚)゚。
Have you: 6. Dated someone twice: I haven’t even dated someone once :’))) 7. Kissed someone and regretted it: I’ve kissed exactly one person, so...hm. There was a period of time when I had conflicting emotions over what happened, but in the end, I don’t think I regret it. 8. Been cheated on: See #6. 9. Lost someone special: I’ve had a grandfather pass away, and this is probably going to sound bad, but...I really appreciated him, and he was nothing but kind to me. However, since I’d only seen him about three times in my life, the biggest way his death affected me was through my mother. It took her a while to get over my grandfather’s death, so it changed the way I behaved around her during that time. 10. Been depressed: Yes. 11. Gotten drunk and thrown up: Exactly once, because I made the mistake of keeping pace with my uncle in Korea who takes soju shots like a champ. This also happened to be the night before Lunar New Year, so I got chewed out by my aunt (older sister of my uncle) once she realized why I was so lethargic during the festivities. _(:3 」∠)_ I don’t regret it though, because before that I had never been hungover before and was wondering what my limit was, haha.
List 3 favorite colors: 12-14. Red, blue, and...uh...other than those two I don’t have any definite faves. I guess the third would be either yellow or purple...? I’ll just go with purple for the sake of completion.
In the last year have you: 15. Made new friends: #TeamONIBE 16. Fallen out of love: That would require me to fall in love with someone first. 17. Laughed until you cried: I think it might have been when Mayushii and King did that disastrous cooking niconama. Like...what the actual fuck, do they seriously not know anything about basic kitchen safety and hygiene??? 18. Found out someone was talking about you: The number of times I’ve gone on to Discord and found out that someone in ONIBE was talkin’ smack about me... (。・ˇ_ˇ・。) It’s all in good fun though, haha. 19. Met someone who changed you: See #15. 20. Found out who your friends are: Nothing says "friendship” like screaming your heart out at an anisong concert, eating McNuggets while insanely drunk, sleeping while squished together in a seedy neighborhood, wotaing loudly in a moving vehicle, and other various activities I did with people I had never met in real life. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ AX 2017 was hella great for ONIBE bonding. 21. Kissed someone on your Facebook list: I don’t think I’ve even used FB for non-work stuff since 2016 lol
General: 22. How many of your Facebook friends do you know in real life: If this means “I’ve actually met them in person and have had a decent conversation with them”, then maybe a few hundred? But if this means that I actually talk to them on a semi-regular basis, then, like...10, maybe. :’) 23. Do you have any pets: See my answer in the previous chain post I did. tl;dr I had a turtle and a dog in elementary school, but after that, no pets. I’d like to have a dog when I get a place of my own, though. 24. Do you want to change your name: Nope. 25. What did you do for your last birthday: Watched LLS Episode 13 in the morning and ate Korean BBQ in the evening. 26. What time did you wake up: Today? I honestly don’t remember. Sometime before 9? 27. What were you doing at midnight last night: Laughing at dumb shit on Twitter and Discord, probably. 28. Name something you can’t wait for: The Delayed Viewing for the 2nd Live for the US! I’m making plans to meet up with ONIBE folks again and it’s gonna be ~L I T~ 29. When was the last time you saw your mom: Early in the morning. She was like “lol get up and lose some weight” while I was still in bed so I groaned back, “You’re one to talk,” and went back to sleep. 30. What is one thing you wish you could change in your life: I was gonna say “how about eliminating my student loans haha” but I suppose this is supposed to be a more serious question. I guess it’d be nice if I was a neater person. Like, my room is a total mess right now and I’m terrible at keeping track of things I should be working on... 31. Listening right now: Fun fact - I actually only listen to music while I’m driving. Otherwise, it distracts me from what I should be doing. 32. Have you ever talked to a person named Tom: Yup, that was the name of my debate coach when I was in junior high. 33. Something that is getting on your nerves: People who hate on LL seiyuu. Like, they’re actual human beings who are working really hard to live up to the expectations of thousands - no, millions of people worldwide. To be quite honest, I invite you to tell me if you legitimately want to shit on any one of them (both µ’s and Aqours), because I have yet to see a single person who has had a good justification for doing so. 34. Most visited website: Probably Tumblr/YouTube/Twitter/Reddit, too lazy to figure out which one of those it is.
Jaewhy put in random questions here because they were missing for some reason, so I guess I’ll continue those: 35. Mole(s): I have a few around my face, but other than the one on my right cheek I don’t think they’re that noticeable? I don’t spend a lot of time in the sun like other Californians. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 36. Mark(s): I have a birthmark on the backside of my right shoulder that I’m sort of self-conscious about. It’s the perfect shape for getting a tattoo of a sunflower around it, so maybe I’ll do that some time in the future? 37. Childhood dream: Lawyer. 38. Hair color: I feel like I’ve answered this in a previous chain post, but it’s black. Duh. Though if you hold it up to the sun, some of the ends are more like dark brown. 39. Long or short: Long. 40. Do you have a crush on someone: See #16. Nope. 41. What do you like about yourself: I’ve spent an unhealthy amount of time staring at computers/video games and I still don’t need glasses. :D 42. Piercings: No, but I should probably get my ears pierced at some point? 43. Blood type: O. 44. Nickname: Yujacha, but a lot of people shorten it to “Yuja”. 45. Relationship status: Single. 46. Zodiac: Libra, Dog. 47. Pronouns: I feel like it’s obvious what gender I am, so just go with those. 48. Favorite TV show: I don’t really watch TV these days, but if I’m kicking back with some hot cocoa at like 2am I might watch Criminal Minds or something. 49. Tattoos: Nope, but like I said in #36 I’ve been thinking about it. 50. Right or left hand: Right. 51. Surgery: Wisdom teeth removal is technically dental surgery. 52. Hair dyed in different color: I had highlights in my hair a few years ago, but they faded real quick. I’m vaguely considering dyeing it brown in the distant future...? 53. Sport: It’s fun to watch the occasional match when there’s a World Cup or Olympic thing going on, but otherwise I have no interest. 54. (A question I came up with since #54 was missing) Extracurricular activities: I was a debate kid for most of my school life, and in college I was in the Korean Club and Student Union. 55. Vacation: Does the 2nd Live DV later this year count? 56. Pair of trainers sneakers *American anthem plays in the distance*: I actually need new ones because I’ve tripped while hiking on at least two separate occasions due to my shitty old sneakers.
More general: 57. Eating: Haven’t yet. 58. Drinking: Wasn’t this literally the first question? 59. I’m about to: Eat. 60. (This question was missing so I'll make one up again) Thinking about: What to eat lol 61. Waiting for: 2nd Live DV~ 62. Want: Money tbh 63. Get married: I’d like to at some point, but at the moment I’m kinda tired of hearing about it from every middle-aged woman who talks to me (including my own mother). 64. Career: Working on it.
Which is better: 65. Hugs or kisses: Hugs, because they’re warm and comfy and can be shared by complete strangers. 66. Lips or eyes: I was gonna repeat a previous answer and say “eyesmiles” but since this is “lips or eyes” rather than “smiles or eyes”, I guess my answer would fall more under “eyes”. 67. Shorter or taller: Bruh, if someone’s shorter than me then I’d need to check their ID to make sure they’re not jailbait. Taller. 68. Older or younger: I’ve never dated anyone so I honestly wouldn’t know, but I’d probably look for someone close to my age first? 69. (Lmao why was 69 missing :3c I’ll just make something up again) Outgoing or shy: The former, since I’m lazy. If someone doesn’t drag me to places I’ll just lay in bed all day. 70. Nice arms or stomach: It’s actually really hard for females to have a toned stomach, so any gals with abs are like ooh~ 👀 But I actually like hands! I have smol stubby fingers so I really dig people with nice hands. 71. Sensitive or loud: The former, because I don’t need the entire neighborhood to know when I’m gettin’ laid kthnx 72. Hook up or relationship: Relationship, because sure why not? 73. Troublemaker or hesitant: Maybe the former, but if they’re being too much of a lil’ shit then I’d go for the latter instead. I’ve dealt with friends who take like 20 minutes to decide what to order from a menu so I know that feel. :’)
Have you ever: 74. Kissed a stranger: Nope. 75. Drank hard liquor: Yup. 76. Lost glasses/contact lenses: I’m pretty sure I annoyed half of ONIBE during AX when I went “haha y’all are blind af” after I found out I was pretty much the only one who didn’t have corrected vision. 77. Turned someone down: I was about to say “no” and then I got a sudden flashback to a certain incident in college, wow thanks for making me remember something I had tried to forget...sooo, uh, yup. 78. Sex on the first date: See #6. 79. Broken someone’s heart: IDK if turning someone down counts as breaking their heart. 80. Had your heart broken: ...yes. I think? 81. Been arrested: Nope. 82. Cried when someone died: Do fictional characters count? 83. Fallen for a friend: Uhhhhh...kind of? It was complicated.
Do you believe in: 84. Yourself: I’d like to think that I do. 85. Miracles: KISEKI DA YO~ ...sorry, I had to. Yeah. 86. Love at first sight: Shukashuu is living proof of this. 87. Santa Claus: Nope, sorry Maki!!! 88. Kiss on the first date: Sure.
Other: 90. Current best friend(s) name: IDK if I have one. :’) 91. Eye color: I’m Asian, take a wild guess. 92. Favorite movie: I don’t really have a favorite, but I did like “Kimi no Na wa.” (Your name.) so much that I made it my phone’s lock screen.
Tagging: I've only tagged people the first time I did one of these and I’m gonna try to keep it that way. If anyone who reads this wants to give it a go, feel free~

49. Tattoos: Nope. Not yet, anyways. Considering it – permanent mods should have personal weight and meaning; at least, for me they should reflect something.
50. Right or left hand: Right-handed.
51. Surgery: The most serious operation happened in 2014. I had (and still have, but it’s non-malignant) a tumor; bone tissues were slowly growing through my head. Right under my hypophysis, right behind my left eye and near my carotid artery. It wracked me with migraines and flashes of intense pain, occasionally I blacked out from pain and lack of blood supply (it was kinda strangling my carotid artery). So, doctors cut almost everything out by going directly through my face and carotid artery. So, like that. But hey, I’m alive!

62. Career: video game writer, writer, lawyer, psychologist... Maybe. I am at loss right now. Now I just started working as a copyrighter.
 WHICH IS BETTER:
63. Hugs or kisses: Can I choose both? Both is good! But kisses from someone I love and cherish are the best. And yeah, I also want a hug followed with a smooch.
64. Lips or eyes: Both!
65. Shorter or taller: Honestly... Being almost 6,5 feet – or 1,97 in metric – makes me higher than most. Can’t say I have a preference, but inevitably my SO’s were significantly shorter than me. Maybe I do have a thing for shorter people.
66. Older or younger: That depends.
67. Nice arms or nice stomach: I... don’t know? Can’t say it matters to me that much.
68. Sensitive or loud: … Again, a bit of both.
69. Hook up or relationship: Relationship. Demisexual here!
70. Troublemaker or hesitant: I’m hesitant for the most part, and easily get stuck in routines, but I can be a troublemaker too. Both are good in their own ways and time. But I love a little chaos and fun, that’s for sure – it is necessary not to stagnate.
 HAVE YOU EVER:
71. Kissed a stranger: Such thing happened.
72. Drank hard liquor: Define HARD. xD The hardest liquor I ever drank was undiluted absinthe, 80%. Delicious!~

78. Been arrested: Almost. I can be fast when it’s necessary.)
79. Cried when someone died: I sobbed and screamed.
80. Fallen for a friend: Yes. And THAT is what makes our friendship complicated. She doesn’t need it, I understand it and agree with her – she doesn’t know about my crush. My emotions... Well, they ain’t making things easier. Stupid heart.
DO YOU BELIEVE IN:
81. Yourself: Not exactly. I try to.
82. Miracles: Weird shit happens so yeah! xD I try to keep an open mind and consider myself agnostic.
83. Love at first sight: Hard to say. I don’t think so – there may be strong attraction (which most people confuse with lust), deep understanding and some solid intuitive feelings, but not love. Love is something you understand and gain through work, through understanding, knowing your SO on a much deeper level, both physical and spiritual.
84. Santa Claus: HOW CAN YOU ASK THAT QUESTION THERE ARE CHILDREN ON THIS SITE
85. Kiss on the first date: Maybe. It depends.
 OTHER:
86. Current best friend: Which one?) I’ve known mine for ages and I will kill for them, if needed. They saved my life and mind and I am grateful beyond simple words.

Run and Go- Josh Dun Fanfiction - Chapter Two
I wake up sweating in the bunk, that’s the one horrible thing about being on a bus, it always gets really hot in the bunks.
After mike came on the bus telling us that we are going hit the road, we went over the concert schedule, who does what. Then we all headed to bed.
I was in charge of making sure everything ran smoothly, making sure no one was getting to rowdy in the crowds, the occasional photos, and throwing a mic at Tyler during a certain song.
Thankfully we were making a stop today so we could stretch our legs and tell everyone else the plan.
Deciding that I couldn’t stand this heat anymore, I quietly jump out of my bunk making sure not to wake anyone and walk into the main part of the bus not that it was a huge bus. I made sure to close the door to the bunk on my way out.
“Your up early.” Paul’s voice makes me jump. He was sitting on the small bench working on his computer.
“It’s 8 am, not that early.” I say, making myself a cup of coffee “what are you working on?” I ask him, taking a seat across from him.
“Making beats for the new jam session we will be doing in a couple of months. You know, there are a couple of songs that could use your backups.” He says, halfway through the sentence I start shaking my head.
I stopped doing music when my parents yelled at me for the noise it would make. I didn’t want to disappoint them so I sold them as fast as I could.
“We both know I don’t do music anymore.” I say
“If you’re so hell bent on not doing music anymore, than why do you tour with bands?” great, this again.
“I’m not going into this again with you. I can’t okay Dad?” I raise my voice a little, to prove to him that I’m serious.
You’re probably wondering why I called him Dad, well I called him that because he is my Dad. Not legally, but that doesn’t matter to me. He raised me, he was the reason I who I am now. I just don’t call him that in public near people that I would have to explain it too.
Leaning back I take a large sip of my coffee and close my eyes, a sign to him that I’m done talking.
“I know your mad, but I need to tell you this real quick, Angela contacted me she wanted me to give this to you.” Paul’s words make my head shoot up, he has his hand in his coat, pulling out a small envelope and handing it to me.
           No, no, no.
Not knowing how to respond to that, I just mumbled a thanks and shoved the letter into my sweater pocket.
“It is really hot.” I say, laying down so my bare legs can touch the cold floor.
“Probably cause I’m in the room, sorry not sorry.” A very shirtless josh says, emerging from the bunks says.
“Gee, cocky much?” I ask sarcastically, sitting up as he pours himself a glass of water.
“No, just stating the facts.” Well, he is hot. “What is your tattoo of?” he asks me.
For a moment I was confused, sure I had tattoos but all of them on my arms and… oh. He’s talking about my koi fish tattoo that runs up my whole thigh.
“It’s a Koi fish, a type of goldfish. They bring good luck.” I tell him, standing up to sit on the couch, since both Jenna and Tyler just walked into the room.
“Morning.” Tyler grumbles, immediately laying down on the opposite side of the bus and leaning his head down.
“Do you know when we are getting off the bus Emily?” Jenna asks me as she lays down next to Tyler.
“In a couple of hours. I believe we will be stopping in Illinois overnight and getting back on the road around 9 am tomorrow.” I respond, glimpsing over I see that both Mike and Mark were getting up.
“Emily, I’m going need you to call a few people for me to confirm some dates. Then you have the rest of the day off.” Mike says as he starts another cup of coffee.
“Okay, I’m gonna go get ready then.” I say stepping into the bunks.
I think that’s one of the reasons I don’t like to make friends during tour, because it is a full time 24/7 job. If I start to have a conversation with any members or crew, I get cut off because I have to do something.
I shouldn’t be getting close to Josh, Tyler, and Jenna like I have been. This is probably the most I have ever talked to members of the band in all my years of touring.
Plus, if I can’t even be open to Paul about some things after knowing him for most of my life, how am I going to make a real friendship with people I barely know.
For now, its best if I just stay by myself. Focus on work.
----
“You sure you don’t want to play monopoly with us?” Jenna asks me for the second time. It was currently 8pm and I was still doing work.
At around 9 am we got off of the bus in some small town in Seattle, everyone except me went off to explore the town.
They offered to take me out with them, but I declined. It was nice staying in the bus alone, I did all the work I had to for today, then called mike and asked what else I could do.
After some hesitation from him, he finally gave me a long list of things to do for the day most of which he was going to have me complete over the course of the week.
Most of the work was just calling and making sure the interviewers were going to show up, calling and order more mech. Simple things.
Currently it was nighttime, everyone came back to the bus about an hour ago and I was typing emails to fueled by ramen concerning things they needed for the boys to complete during days they weren’t performing.
“Yeah, I want to do this work so it’s not so stressful when tour actually starts. Plus, I’m technically still working until 10 tonight.” I say with a smile, plugging in my headphones and putting them on. I decided to play the blurry face album since I’d be listening to it a lot during tour.
I actually finished work an hour ago, now I was just scrolling through facebook. Kylie Jenner lips, April the giraffe, and friends getting married were the only thing I saw on the Internet. All of which made me annoyed.
My mind eventually drifted to the letter that Angela gave to me. I didn’t throw it away, as much as I would’ve wanted to I just didn’t have the strength too.
I haven’t talking to her or her husband since my eighteenth birthday. Out of the two of them she was the one I was least afraid of.
All of a sudden I’m knocked out of my trance by two dice being thrown in my face.
“What the hell was that for?” I ask them, ripping out my headphones and shutting my computer.
“You were zoning out and weren’t answering our question.” Josh says, catching the dice as I threw them back at him.
“What was the question?” I ask him
“What are you going to do for dinner?” Jenna says, “Tyler and I are going out to dinner so we were wondering what you are going to eat?”
“Oh, I’m not that hungry so ill probably just eat a apple.”
“You haven’t eaten all day, so you should probably eat more than an apple.” Paul says as he and mike enter the bus.
“I’m not ten any more, I think I know how to care for myself by now.” I say, glaring at Paul.
“I’m just saying.” He says, putting his hands up in defense “I just came back here to get my wallet. We will be back by tonight”
After he leaves mark tells us he is heading out to have dinner with the crew. Shortly after Jenna and Tyler leave so only Josh and I are in the bus.
Josh is sitting across from me typing on his phone and I was scrolling through instagram on mine.
“Lets go get dinner. I think I saw a red lobster a couple minutes away from us.” Josh says, standing up and sliding his phone into his back pocket.
I decide not to answer his, cause if I look up and into his eyes I’ll probably cave in and say yes.
What is this person doing to me.
“I’m not taking no for an answer.” Still not going to look up.
“J-Josh, what the hell are you doing?” I screech, all of a sudden looking at the floor with a red face.
“I told you I’m not going to take no for an answer.”

What has been the most annoying thing about your day so far? I had a blood test done for my dog last Friday and they still haven’t updated me about the availability of the results. They really shouldn’t have said “Wait within the day or tomorrow” if they weren’t going to be able to deliver their promise up to THREE days later because it’s just giving me more anxiety.  Is your computer running slow today? (Mine is, and it's annoying!!!!) No. I don’t do a lot of things with mine and it’s especially relaxed now that school’s out for Christmas and the programs I usually have on are now closed. Do you own a romper? Yes, I have a couple. Do you have a smartphone or a dumb phone, or no phone? I have a...smartphone, I guess. What popular social media platforms AREN'T you on? Instagram.
Have you ever spilled nail polish? I don’t think I have, no. What was the last thing you were stressed about? Well, since you got me talking about my dog’s blood test, then that. I’ll also be stressing over my Incomplete marks throughout the holiday break. What does your computer's slow-loading cursor look like? I don’t get it – like what shows up when my laptop kinda lags? It shows me the Mac rainbow pinwheel. Do you prefer Microsoft Word or Pages? I use Google Docs to write class notes and to work on anything acads-related. I used to use Pages, then I realized it didn’t suit me so I moved on to Microsoft OneNote, then it just traumatized me after I tried using it for my notes in Econ class which I barely passed – so I just moved on to GDocs. Would you rather have a trampoline or swimming pool? Swimming pool. I have little use for a trampoline. Are you angry at someone right now? Myself, as always. Do you ever dream of getting revenge? It’s an occasional thought just so I feel satisfied but it never gets into specifics. Do you have the same favorite colors you had when you were a kid? Mmm no. My favorite as a kid was purple, because it was my great-grandma’s favorite and a lot of her stuff was purple. When she passed, I saw it less and less and I phased it out as my favorite color. What do you like to put in your tea? I don’t like tea. What do you like to put in smoothies? There’s one smoothie that I admittedly do like; it’s called the Breakfast Smoothie from Go Salads but I dunno what’s in it so let me look it up real quick – ok so I just checked Zomato, and it consists of apple, banana, cinnamon, oats, coco sugar, chia seeds, greens, and soy milk. I don’t make smoothies myself but if I absolutely had no choice, I’d get that specific kind. Do your stuffed animals have names? I don’t even own any stuffed toys. What was the name of the first porcelien doll you got? I never had one. What would you like to paint on a rock? I’ve never thought about painting on a rock. Do you own any tapestries, and if so, what's on it/them? Nope. Do you sell any products? If so, what? No, I don’t. Am really not the business-y/entrepreneurial type, lmao. If not, do you want to start a business? See above. Have your parents ever crushed your dreams? No, they have always been accepting and supportive. Bonus points to my dad for not laughing in my face when I told him I wanted to be a runway model back when I was 12 because I WOULD HAVE. Do you own anything cheetah print? I have a hand-me-down tank top with a cheetah print but I only wear that around the house. Do you know how to knit? No, I never learned how to. We were taught knitting and crocheting in home ec but I have a very hard time learning if it’s hands-on (which also explains why I can’t do origami), so I was never able to catch up with my classmates and never got to submit final projects either. Have you ever made a collage for your bedroom wall? I did like a lettering thing of a quote made up of cut-up magazine pages when I was in high school, but I’m not sure if that counts as a collage. Do you make DIY projects and gifts? No, because I’m terrible at anything DIY. Would you ever get a tattoo? I would but it would take A LOT of courage, crying, and getting over my fear of needles lmao. Is your computer slow? Nope. The one time it noticeably lagged was when I downloaded The Sims 4 and started playing it. I quickly realized it isn’t a gaming laptop though so I had the program deleted almost immediately. What types of churches do you find really boring? All of them. Would you ever start a small group in your home? Uh, like a cult? No, that’s pretty weird. Do you have an inspiration board? No, I don’t. What do you take when your back hurts? I don’t take anything, I just change my position to one where my back won’t feel as strained. Does your back hurt right now? Not so much at the moment. What color are your nails painted? THEY AREN’TTTTTT Are you wearing a romper? I don’t wear rompers around the house lmao. Do you have a colored teddy bear? Nope. On what day is your local grocery store the busiest? I’m guessing Sunday, since everyone usually goes out on Sundays anyway. What day do you usually go grocery shopping? My mom does hers on the weekends.  Do you prefer to shop online or in stores? In stores tbh because I get to see the products before thinking about buying them, but I won’t deny that online shopping is also a lot more convenient. Do you like shopping? Looking through shelves and hangers can be overwhelming for me so no not really, but it does feel good when I’ve already bought everything I want/need haha. Do you own any band t-shirts? Just one.
Do you have an annoying neighbor? They have annoying kids, but no I don’t have issues with the neighbors. Do you have a dream? Sure. Do you own a pair of Lularoe leggings? No. Would you ever wear leggings as pants? I have before. Owls or peacocks? Peacocks, I guess? Lions or horses? Lions. Do you like getting caught in the rain without an umbrella? No. Can you still fit into kid's clothes? Kid’s clothes are hella small so I highly doubt it, but I do have a rather petite figure. Would you rather wear orange or black? Black. Is your kitchen floor black and white checkered? It isn’t. Do you own bar stools? We don’t. Who have you been told you look like? I’ve been told I look and speak like Frankie Pangilinan lmao. I also had a high school classmate who liked telling me I look like Lucy Hale but I haaaaaaardly see the resemblance. What color are your doorknobs? Gold. Do you feel like you are waiting for life to start? Now more than ever, yeah. What devotional do you read, if any? Do you own a bobblehead? Not since I was a kid. What do you make wishes on? Just candles. Do you own pastel-colored jeggings? I don’t own jeggings at all. Are you in physical pain right now? Not anymore since I got my teeth treated. So relieving. Are you in emotional distress right now? Always during the holiday season. What color nail polishes do you think are best for summer? I don’t care. What's the best natural pain reliever? Dogs and good food. Do you like trees? I’m not particularly obsessed but I do care for them, if that’s what you’re asking. Do you own a flashlight? Yeah, I have one in my car that doubles as a taser. What is your city known for? Rice cakes, a waterfall, its resorts, and being on a mountain. What is your state known for? Rizal isn’t particularly known for anything other than being near Metro Manila and large chunks of it being atop a mountain lol. What is your country known for? A murderous president, being in the news for hurricanes and floods, beaches like Palawan and Boracay, and balut, which so many people are pussies about. Do you have a church home? I don’t even know what that means. If the local mailman sent you a facebook friend request, would you accept? No. What's your favorite Paramore song? OMG ARE YOU KIDDING HAVE YOU READ THIS TUMBLR Do you like the song "Fake Happy"? YES Do you tan easily? A bit, yeah. Do you own plaid pants? Nope. What did your first Barbie doll look like? I don’t remember because I didn’t really like playing with Barbies. Do you like scrambled eggs? Love them. They’re my favorite kind of eggs, along with omelets. Have you ever made a recipe you found in a magazine? Nope. Have you ever done a craft that you saw in a magazine? I probably did as a kid. What kind of business would you most like to start? Food, most likely. Are you bitter about anything? Aren’t we all. What is your favorite nail polish color? I don’t caaaaare. What is your favorite color for cars? White. What is your favorite color for bridesmaid dresses? Something muted, like dirty white or cream or beige. I don’t want a lot of flashy colors in my wedding. What is your favorite color in general? Right now it’s pastel pink. Do you look good in black? Yes. Do you ever wear orange? Rarely. Do you have a twin? No. If you had a twin, what would he or she be named? I don’t have a clue.

California Heart
Chapter One: New There I was on a plane. First time ever, my anxiety was at an all time high along with the plane. But I have to give myself credit for doing this. I had to get through this first flight before I started college. I looked out the window and saw that the clouds were more translucent here than they were from the ground. Sitting back and taking a deep breath, I began to think about all the wonderful things my parents promised about this huge summer adventure. They kept referring to this as the summer I'd always remember. It's only the third of June and I'm ready for this all to be over. I just want to begin my first year at "". If I was to make my parents proud, I was to attend there and become the best "" I could be. Of course that's not my dream. It was the plan. You know that plan that parents selfishly come up with the day you step out of the womb. Okay maybe I'm overreacting but it's the truth. Ever since I could first walk and talk, dad had this plan for me to attend the school him and my mother attended. Follow his career path and fall madly and deeply in love with someone, whom later in life would drown his regretful sorrow with booze and the scent of second hand smoke from a gentleman's club. Not that my father does that. No instead it's the exact opposite. I cannot ever remember a moment where my parent were ever apart. As my thoughts were coming to me, I was interrupted by the voice coming from the front of the plane. "Attention passengers!" The flight attendant beamed. You could tell she's been doing this for years. Her smile was plastered to her face and the crows feet at her eyes were fairly aged. "Please put your seat belts on and prepare to land. We have made it to Los Angeles! As always thank you for choosing American Airlines." I clicked my seatbelt and took yet another deep breath. I made it safely. I made it to the city of angels. Now my next objective was to find my cousin Macy and make it back to her place in one piece. Not that I have too much to worry about. Macy was responsible. At least I hope she still is. I hadn't seen her in three years. Sure we talked and wrote back and forth. The occasional Skype sessions, as well as the Facebook Birthday posts. But other than that, nothing else. I know when she moved out to L.A., she did a complete 180 from who she originally was. Macy would tell me how everything seemed so at ease and that her life felt free finally. I believe that came from the irrationality of who her mother was. Don't get me wrong, I love my aunt Karen, but honestly she was a bit flighty. Mom said it was because her sister was born in a time where peace and love was all you needed. No structure. To put it into simple terms, aunt Karen was a pure hippie. Less pure than you'd hope, but nonetheless a hippie. And I was about to embark on a wild summer with her spawn. As I walked through the terminal and went to the luggage carousel, I couldn't help but feel some anxiety about Macy possibly forgetting to come get me and instead sending her recent man of interest and me fighting him off, so I don't smell like marijuana and stench of sweat mixed with some sort of essential oils. When I had my luggage in hand, I heard a loud whistle and whipped my head to the direction it was coming from. "Yoooohoooo! Leslie Marie!" There she was. Cut off shorts and her mesh halter top. Her skin perfectly tan and freckled from head to toe. Her sunny blonde hair pulled up in a messy bun. Her piercings still in tact and possibly a new one. I even was able to spot the tattoo she had on her forearm. It was our grandmother's name inside a glass heart. She walked over. I noticed something even more strange. From far away I hadn't noticed. "Macy! What is going on?" I was curious looking at her torso area. It looked a little stretched out and I had noticed that her naval piercing was missing. "Are you?!" "Duh! Leslie I'm preggers!" She laughed. Her laugh sounded exactly like her mom's laugh. Very loud and echoing through. "But wait, why didn't you tell me?" I asked. "I wanted you to find out in person. I'm only four months. Next month we find out the sex." Macy explained. "Who is the father?" I wanted to make sure she was in good hands. "His name is Greg. He is a chef at a vegetarian cafe and is totally cool." She noticed my curiosity. "We just got engaged and he's very good to me" "So I take we are having a shotgun wedding?" I smirked. Macy didn't appreciate it. She shrugged it off and changed the subject. "How was the flight? Aunt Faye said this was your first plane ride." She helped with my bags. "Other than the screaming children and the creepy older man staring at me, I'd say fairly well." I explained while following her. "Good. I promise to take good care of you. But please by all means, don't stay in. Go out. Have fun!" Macy was acting like a mother already. But not the kind that was motherly. More of the friend type. But I do appreciate that she's letting me stay with her. "Macy, thank you." I smiled. She smiled and we walked to the car. Once we had got to the car, there stood a man fairly thin, blonde hair that was done in what could only be a small faux hawk. He wore a pair of shorts, that had to cut the legs of pants off. A tank that had a picture of an avocado on it. Weird. As we were standing face to face, I could see his facial features were very prominent. His chin was perfectly square and he had simple as he smiled ear to ear. Green eyes that reminded me of wooded areas. This guy had the all American guy look. Not the pretentious guy, who is an all star quarterback that your parents told you about. He seemed like the kind that you would bring home to your parents. "Hi, I'm Greg." He smiled and reached his hand out to me. I took his hand and shook it. "Hello Greg, I'm Leslie." I left go of his hand. Greg nodded and picked my bags up to put in the trunk of the car. "You don't have to do that." "Oh no worries, it's my pleasure." He reassured me. "Oh don't mind him. Greg is from the mid west. Well Mid East from here." She snorted out a laugh. "Oh, which state?" I was actually interested. Go figure. "Kansas!" He said opening our doors for us. We sat down in the car and buckled in. Greg had started telling me about how he was raised and all of his childhood memories. He did have an interesting life for sure. Two older brothers and parents who loved helping others. A pet pig that was actually quite adorable. They shown me pictures. I'm proud of the man my cousin chose. He is such a gentleman to her and he absolutely loves and adores the little baby already. A plus in my book. My mouth dropped open a little when we pulled up to the house. It was very modern and if I must say, big. I didn't know Macy had this nice of a house, especially along the beach. She must've noticed my mouth, I heard her chuckle. This house though, all white with big glass windows. A balcony overlooking the streets. Fenced in yard with a garden on the left side of the house. There was a gate that opened up to let us in. "Oh did I mention that besides being a chef, Greg is a very talented musician." Macy said a matter of factly. "I'm not that great." He leaned over and kissed Macy. "I love your house!" I blurted out. They both laughed as we started getting out of the car. Greg got my bags, as Macy took my hand and lead me in. They took me to a room that was on the first floor. Right next to the living room and across from the kitchen. The room was eggshell white and had tapestries on the far wall. Big glass sliding doors that would let you out to the beach. The desk was handmade and you could tell. Not that it was crappy, but that it just that sort of charm. The bed was a queen sized bed, with bedding that was similar to the bedding we had at our grandmother's house. There was a shelf full of books that were alphabetically arranged. I was impressed. Macy outdone herself with this. She even had a picture of her and I from so long ago. It was in a wooden frame and had daisies painted on it. It was from when we were so very young and would spend our summers together with our grandparents in Florida. Macy must've noticed me looking intently at it. "You know, this is the first summer we will have spent together since she passed." I felt her arms around me for a hug. I squeezed her arm for the comfort and nodded. "The only woman that would believe we weren't troublemakers." I felt a tear on my cheek. "She would be the one to start the trouble at times." She laughed. I couldn't help but laugh with her. I turned around to hug her better. She whispered in my ear. "Maybe you a walk on the beach would clear your head." "That doesn't sound bad at all." I squeezed her a little tighter before I left go. She smiled and her Greg left the room. I started unpacking a little and put some more comfortable clothes on. Nothing fancy, a grey tee and some navy blue shorts. I left my flip flops by the bed as I walked toward the sliding doors. I pulled my hair back in a messy bun and headed towards the beach. Making my way towards the water, I saw many families just relaxing and having a grand time. Something inside made me wish it was ten years ago, on the beach in Daytona. I pushed those thoughts away and started trekking up the beach where the water kisses the sand. It was so peaceful and just a nice feeling knowing I was alone. At least I thought I was. I heard some one yelling somewhere behind me. I turned around quick, but not quick enough. "Look out!! Hey look out!" A manly voice yelled. "Huh?" I looked up and saw what he was talking about. I had a football flying towards me. Before I had a chance to react, I felt the slap of the pigskin on my face. Feeling my legs turn completely to hello for some reason, I fell to the ground. "Are you alright?!" I felt someone shake me. My eyes started opening slowly. "What happened?" I asked. Sitting up, I brushed myself off a little and looked at him. "By the way, I'm Leslie." "I'll be sure to remember that next time I see something hurdling towards you." He chuckled. "You got hit by my football. My friend threw it too hard and I wasn't gonna catch it in time." "Seems logical. But next time play something that won't hurt anyone." I joked. "You got it. Leslie is it? Are you alright? Do you need anything?" You could hear actual concern in his voice. "Just one thing. Who are you?" I started to get up from the sand. Brushed myself off some more. "My name? It's James. James Maslow." He smiled. Extending his hand, I took it and shook his hand. And just like that it's as if the pain in my head had disappeared. Like nothing happened at all. Chapter 2 is on its way!!
