i think one of the most frustrating things for me is, when mweor is down, there is literally no one to contact about it. mweor's official social media pages aren't updated anymore, there's no longer an official discord, etc. like, i think they should maybe have someone on staff (or more than one person) dedicated to their social media to update and respond to users when the site is down. giving an estimate for how long it will be down, explaining why it's down, taking reports from users about outages, etc. a lot of other websites and apps do this.

The Rogue and Gambit Project: Previously On X-Men... Gambit

It's time to talk about Gambit! The nice thing about Gambit is that he was, at the time, a relatively new character, having only been around in the comics for about a year. Which means there is way less to cover! Boy, are we going to have to deal with some questionable art, though.

The Basics:

Name: Remy Etienne* LeBeau

*Okay, so, this is the funny thing about the name Etienne. Apparently, it started out as fanlore, and - as so many things that happen in fandom - gained popularity as fanon from a particularly well known piece of fanfiction from way back when. I believe it's actually been used in canon at this point. It is on Marvel.com - which is the official site. I'll keep a look out for it to show up.

Also, in case you didn't know (and I'm sure you did), Le Beau is French for The Beautiful.

Backstory: Just like Rogue, Gambit's backstory is shrouded in mystery. He's a thief. He's from New Orleans. He's Cajun. That's all your getting for now. Don't worry, we'll peel back the layers. ;)

Power Set (via uncannyxmen.net):  interkinetic power allows him to produce bio-kinetic energy within his body and use it to convert any inorganic object's potential energy into kinetic energy on contact, making the object highly volatile and explosive on contact, internal energy also grants him heightened agility and creates static interference that shields his mind from detection

I should also give the obligatory comment of - these powers are toned down from his full abilities because of /reasons/ which we'll get to eventually. He had Mr. Sinister give him a lobotomy and, we've all been suffering the consequences sense.

Uncanny X-Men 266-267

Uncanny X-Men #266

I have to start by appreciating the fact that Gambit is a thief who wears bright pink and metal boots. It's a bold look.

Anyway, the funny thing about Gambit is that the character he turned out to be ended up being a lot different from creator Chris Claremont's initial ideas. Apparently, he was supposed to be, ultimately, a villain and, while he was supposed to be a love interest for one of our characters, it wasn't Rogue, it was... Kitty Pryde. He was also supposed to be a Mr. Sinister creation and a third summers brother. Yeah, I'm kind of glad Claremont left before any of this stuff really came to fruition.

Also, I once read that Claremont claim that original artist Mike Collins made Gambit too pretty. Which is funny, because ngl, I really am not a fan of the look in his debut, and it will be a while before he really earns his name.

Uncanny X-Men #266

I also want to note that Gambit's powers were a little different back then. He didn't have playing cards yet, and instead used metal spikes as throwing devices. The powers were designated in green. And were charged from his eyes. Also, interesting to note - his eyes aren't red on black yet, either.

There's also 'hypnotic charm' thing that was kinda used in the early appearances. He does use it in his first appearance to tame some of the Shadow King's Hounds.

Uncanny X-Men #266

He's gonna be calling her 'Stormy' for years. She's gonna love it. ;) (Btw - he calls her Stormy 4 times in this issue alone.)

Okay, so... Gambit shows up, crossing paths with Storm at a mansion of some rich person. Storm is de-aged (for... reasons) and is running from the Shadow King and his minions. He's busy stealing art from the rich dude (who apparently is not home and has no security, lol).

And thus, one of my favorite comic book friendships is born. And really, this first appearance is a lot of fun as Gambit and Storm play off each other's strengths to get away from the Shadow King.

Uncanny X-Men 267

Jim Lee is going to add some of Gambit's more iconic features -- such as throwing playing cards (Gambit's Ace of Spades shows up in this next issue) and using some kind of staff (hilariously, it's a broom in this issue).

Storm and Gambit's adventures continue. He takes her to New Orleans for a while so she can recover from the Shadow King. They go thieving -- playing Robin Hood -- stealing from rich people because they can. And then the Orphan Maker comes along, who makes Storm a teenager? (Idk - the whole thing is weird - she'll become her real age again in the next story arc.)

Uncanny X-Men Annual #14

Fun fact: Because of release dates and such, Uncanny X-Men #266 wasn't the first comic released to have Gambit in it. The Annual technically came out first, though it clearly takes place after Uncanny 266-267. But this is the first time we see Gambit among the X-Men team. Not that he does anything remotely interesting during this whole thing. He doesn't even speak, kind of hides awkwardly in the background.

X-Tinction Agenda (Uncanny X-Men #270-272; X-Factor & New Mutants)

Gambit joins the team just as the mega X-tinction Agenda crossover starts. (Uncanny X-Men joins New Mutants and X-Factor for this one) And, I'll be honest, this isn't one of my favorite crossovers. The whole thing revolves around the nation of Genosha, how they're using mutants for slaves, and how all the teams come together to change the status quo. And of course, mutants get capture and tortured and a few killed. Fwiw X-Men: The Animated Series did do this storyline.

Uncanny X-Men #270

Gambit and Cable don't (won't) get to cross paths very often, so I found this an interesting panel. Anyway... Gambit really has very little to do during this crossover. When Storm gets captured, he is really concerned for her (as he considers her his partner at the moment) but he's not really vibe-ing the whole team dynamic yet.

Uncanny X-Men #272

This is arguably the coolest thing Gambit's done as of yet. Dude pulls a spike out of his leg to use as a lockpick and gets himself rescued. I'm glad they give him this, because, again, for the most part he's just kinda hanging around in the background not doing much.

I will say - he and Jubilee get to cross paths, which is going to be a source of fun in the next arc.

Space Shenanigans (Uncanny X-Men 273-277)

Some of my favorite issues are when the team is regrouping. Post- X-Tinction Agenda, it's clear that things in the X-Office were changing. Claremont is at this point sort of being pushed out, while Jim Lee and Co are becoming more the driving force behind the books. On panel, the teams are kind of merging. X-Factor's first era is drawing to a close, and the X-Men are resolidifying after being in flux for so long.

We're about to get a Space Soap Opera, as Claremont so dearly loves, but this issue is a bit of a breather between the arcs. And we get this bit of tension between Storm and Gambit - where Gambit is ready to move on, but Storm is back on solid footing again. They don't explicitly state why Gambit sticks around, but he definitely does...

Uncanny X-Men 273

I swear, this is Chris Claremont's favorite joke. He's used it before this moment, and he'll do it again. It's impactful the first time, but it does get old the more Claremont does it. However, we get the first highlight of the dynamic between Gambit and Wolverine -- which will be antagonistic for a while, but is fascinating.

Btw - as I mentioned earlier, this is the first issue Gambit and Rogue appear in together. Though they be miles and miles and miles apart.

The whole crux of this arc, that I've been kind of ignoring, involves Xavier being brainwashed in space (or something) and of course the X-Men get involved in space politics (again). Honestly, space stories are Claremont's favorite trope, so it doesn't surprise me that the end of his run are filled with a couple of them.

Anyway -- if there's one person impervious to Gambit's charms - it's Jubilee. They get to hang out a lot during this arc, and it's really delightful since they team up to kind of figure out what is going on with Xavier acting weird and all the odd space kool-aide people are drinking.

I actually really like this cover. Gambit's got a sword and a spear! Plus, he looks like his 90s cool self now. The blue and yellow uniform doesn't suit him AT. ALL. But we don't have to deal with it too much longer...

The nice thing about this whole space arc is that Gambit really gets to come into his own. He now looks cool (note the red eyes are here!). He's doing fun stuff. He's taking on Wolverine and holding his own. He's being smart and tactical and an asset. They've paired him with some great X-Men to start off with, and it's paying off.

Meanwhile, we don't really know much about him. As many of the other characters state, his background is shrouded in mystery... (whether you like what it actually is can be debated as we get to it). But for now, he's intriguing as a new comer.

And this is where we're at as two story lines come crashing together and our two romantic leads get to meet for the first time.... off panel.

But I'll get more into that next time when I discuss... The Muir Island Saga!

Chamber

Chamber is a compliment machine. Like he’s always noticing something new and delightful about you and literally cannot wait to tell you about it.

“Mon tresor, that new outfit looks so good on you, I would have thought we were going to a soiree this evening rather than a combat zone."

Also loves shopping sprees, so be prepared to be dragged out and dressed up for hours. This man will miss no opportunity to admire you and flirt pretty shamelessly. He bankrolls the whole affair, of course.

The few times you’ve been able to slink into the room without him noticing, your ears would be burning because this man is literally just telling anyone who’ll listen how cute you are. If you do finally clear your throat, the man goes absolutely pink before doubling down

Oml this man can get handsy. He’s obsessed with tracing your dimples and curves and just literally cannot get enough of you

He loves it when you do the same to him too. If you go to cup his cheek or trace his collarbone, he goes completely still and lowkey short circuits. It’s like he wants to focus on nothing but your hand and where it meets his skin

One of his favourite things to do is to have you sit on his lap facing him, maximising that physical contact and being able to see your startling eyes. He could stay that way for hours, just having someone so beautiful and precious so close to him, with such a warm smile

When he’s feeling a little low, he really loves to lay his head in your lap and just have you hold him. He’ll murmur conversation when he can, or maybe just fall asleep if you’re okay with it, but he’s realised that it’s the one thing that can calm him down

He’s someone who struggles to verbalise his insecurities, but having you there and being so close to you really helps him unwind and talk things through

Phoenix

Phoenix doesn’t give two flying fucks about what the rest of the protocol thinks when it comes to you. He reasons that if they wanted in, they should have tried to romance you sooner

Massive on the PDA. He’s a tall mofo, and so he absolutely loves coming up from behind when you’re in the middle of talking to someone, draping his arms over you and resting his chin on your head

Makes no move to address whatever the other person might be doing, he just grins and relishes the fact that he managed to score you and you’re right there in front of him

If Phoenix has had a good day, like clutched a mission for the protocol or hit the high score on the range, one of his favourite things to do is sidle up to you, wrap his arm around your waist and bring you in for a massive snog. He can’t help but make a beeline for you whenever he’s feeling great

Same if you’ve had a big win tbh, he just loves being able to celebrate things with you and get kisses

Legit, he’s been chastised by Brim for crowding the intercom on missions together, because he takes the opportunity to flirt shamelessly with you, crowing about how damn good you look on site. “Eyo, not to alarm the squad but we got a looka’ in hookah”

As serious as the disciplinary meeting afterwards is supposed to be, you’re definitely struggling to hide a grin. The winks your boyfriend keeps shooting you whenever Brim isn’t looking don’t exactly help either.

Loves to bury his head in your chest and wrap his arms around your midsection. Like he’ll hit you with the full puppy eyes from across the room, or spam your datapad if he can’t find you in person, because you’re his recharge point and he’s down bad.

Loves loves LOVES it when you snuggle up on his lap. He’ll run his hands through your hair and absent-mindedly trace these flame patterns across your forehead while he chats away about the recent mission

Phoenix also adores being big spoon—one of his favourite things on a lazy afternoon is to slink off to your room, press up real close against you and shape his body around yours. Bonus points when he does this in winter—the protocol can get bloody cold, and having his chest against your back is so nice and warm

Sova

Sova is such a beautiful and honest person that the entire protocol know exactly how smitten he is with you

He literally cannot keep his eyes off you when you’re in the room. Like he watches you with the warmest, softest smile and is always quietly padding over to you to put a gentle hand on the small of your back

He tries to be considerate of the protocol and will temper his PDA in public, but that doesn’t stop him from constantly finding his way close to you and just having one point of contact, whether it’s a hand holding yours or his chest brushing yours as he leans over you

When you’re alone or have a more secluded area, he’s a total cuddle bug. He’ll pad up to you and wrap his arms around you from behind, resting his chin on your shoulder and huffing a contented sigh

Insane cuddle stamina too, like if you switch around to face him and go in for a hug he will take it in and hold you for maaaany minutes. You’ll often feel his arms lock in around yours and his heartbeat start to stabilise against chest. Occasionally you catch him mutter something softly in Russian

Loves it when you cup his face in your hands, and will just drink in the eye contact with a goofy smile. He doesn’t usually get giggly, but if you start peppering kisses on his nose and forehead he can’t help but let out a little chuckle (he definitely returns the favour)

Sova’s not the neediest person, but sometimes he genuinely needs to hold you after a particularly tough mission.

After the Fade mission, in fact, he turns up at your room looking gaunt and the frightened look in his eye almost breaks your heart right there and then.

You tug him into the room and just press your chest against his, arms wrapping around him. As you whisper ‘it’s okay, I’ve got you, you’re okay now’, he finally lets himself start shivering as he returns your affections, burying his head into your shoulder and squeezing you like he’s afraid you’ll disappear. He leans into every movement you make, and you can tell then and there just how much he loves having you close. You’re not going anywhere.

"Why do you think we came here?" A voice entered through the intercom as you looked up from your paperwork and to your security footage.

"I doubt they would be able to help, that is all I'm saying." A smirk formed on your face at those words, feeling ready to surprise them with your expertise on the case.

"Should I let your clients in, ma'am?" Your assistant spoke up, and you pressed your finger against the answer button.

"Yes, please." With a delicate tone, you responded and focused on the double door that led to your office. Soon after, a knock echoed through your room and you got up from your chair to saunter over to the entrance. With a smile, you opened the door to see two gentlemen standing next to each other.

"Hello, there," You greeted the taupe-haired detective before turning your gaze to the other as his blue-ish eyes widened. "Long time no see. Please, come in."

"Hello, my name is Haru Kato, and this is Daisuke Kambe. I suppose you already know that, though, right?" Haru asked as he walked in with Daisuke following closely behind.

"Yes, that I do. On the same note, I suppose you know my name already due to the files we were given, but proper introductions are still in order. My name is [Y/N] [L/N]. It is a pleasure to meet you both." With your hand out for a handshake, you made eye contact with both men as Haru took your hand in his before Daisuke followed suit.

"Take a seat, please. Let's get right into the details." You waved your hand over your desk to motion them to sit down as you did the same on the opposite side. Your eyes shifted towards Daisuke, who was currently looking around your office decor, taking in all the files and books on the wooden shelves, the neatly stacked papers and your shut-off laptop resting on the polished Dalbergia table. Finally, his curious gaze settled on you, trailing up your form to meet your eyes.

"Am I... interrupting something by being here?" Haru spoke up, hesitation clear in his voice. A smirk formed on your face before you turned back to the fidgeting detective, who had already taken his seat.

"No, my apologies. Your partner seems quite interested in this office, so I was merely fascinated. Let's get started, shall we?"

"Yes, please." He sighed and signalled the black-haired male to pay attention.

"Through a few sources of mine, I have been able to find a few witnesses of the site-bombing. Though, as expected, they are keeping shut about it."

"Wait, you've already found witnesses?" Haru looked up from the file you handed him, his eyes wide from surprise.

"Why, of course! Why do you think they hired a freelance detective such as me? I do hope I continue to surprise you; it's quite amusing to see your reactions." With a smile, you leaned back in your chair and began to explain how you made such progress. Needless to say, their reactions were your sole source of entertainment at the moment.

"Then, how do you plan to make them talk? Surely, they have someone they fear. There is no other reason for all witnesses to act similarly."

"Anyone will talk with enough money slapped in their faces. All I have to do is prepare a couple cheques." With a dismissive wave of your hand and a shrug of shoulders, you looked up at the two. Both men glanced at each other before turning back to you.

"Did this guy teach you that too?" Haru asked as he jabbed his thumb in Daisuke's direction.

"You always seem to assume I am the bad influence." A small frown formed on Daisuke's face as he turned to his partner, his disappointment clear as day.

"Actually, I might be the one who taught him that instead." You looked over at him once more and smiled genuinely. "Anyway, I think we should meet up at the crime scene tomorrow at noon. This file contains some more details that would be best looked over again." You tapped on the folder that lay on the desk in front of Haru.

"Sure thing. Let's meet up later, then. I'll let you know if I find some more information."

"That would be great! Thanks," You said and began to stand up so you could see both men outside when Haru spoke up once more.

"Um, since we are done with business, there's a question I've been meaning to ask you." His hesitation did not go unnoticed by you but you nodded, nonetheless. "How do you two know each other, if you don't mind answering."

"You were nervous about asking that?" Daisuke stepped in after getting up from his chair.

"Well, I didn't know if it would be rude of me!"

"Oh, you don't need to be worried about any formalities. Please, feel at ease. We may be working together for quite a while so it's better we get comfortable with each other." You smiled to reassure the nervous detective before continuing, "To answer your question- our meeting wasn't really all that interesting. The first time we met was simply due to our parents at a very young age. But, I suppose they didn't intend for us to be friends, considering their reactions when they found out." You chuckled as you thought back to the memory while a small smile formed on Daisuke's face.

"You would always cling onto me and call me out of nowhere. It was only a matter of time till they found out."

"I did not!"

"You did," As expressionless as ever, he stared at you to indicate he had won the argument. He wasn't wrong, but you didn't want to admit being that way in your younger days. Before you could continue, a ring tone echoed within the room and Haru reached into his pant pocket to pull out his phone.

"I need to take this, I'll wait outside for you two to finish. It was nice meeting you, [Y/N]." He bowed before walking out.

"Nice meeting you too," You replied before turning your attention to the remaining detective. "Well, don't I get a reunion hug, Daisuke Kambe?" You spread your arms in anticipation, and he shook his head before walking over. The smile on your face widened as his arms wrapped around your waist, and yours secure around his neck. With a relieved sigh, you nuzzled your face into the crook of his neck and closed your eyes, relishing the moment for as long as you were allowed to.

"I missed this," You mumbled before feeling one of his hands trail up your back, the feather-like touch of his fingers travelling up your spine before reaching the back of your head. His fingers spread between your hair, caressing each strand they touched, as he cradled your head and pushed it closer to him.

"I did too, and I missed you as well." He spoke into your hair and closed his eyes. You bit your lower lip at his forwardness and tightened your grip on him. "I see your style still hasn't changed. What happened to your equipment?"

"I'm not going to reveal all my secrets just yet." You pulled your head back enough to look at him with a smug look. "Plus, it's not like you show me your computer at your house. Why should I show mine?"

"Correction: you've actually seen my computer."

"That's because Suzue showed it to me, not you," You countered and stuck your tongue out at him. A smirk formed on Daisuke's face as he pretended to lean closer and bit the air, making you pull your tongue back in before he could actually catch it.

"Daisuke!" Flustered, you hit his chest and attempted to pull away from your hug but he only tightened his grip. Taking this opportunity to hide your flushed face, you pressed it against his chest when you felt it vibrate due to his chuckles. "I will get you back for this, just you wait."

"You can do that now; what are you holding off for?" Your breath hitched at the question and you reluctantly looked up to see him looking down at you. His hand found its way to your nape and gently stroked the skin, causing goosebumps to form in response to his touches. Before you could reply, you felt a buzz in Daisuke's jacket pocket. You both pulled back as he took his phone out and looked at the screen.

"What a timing, huh." He sighed and declined the call before stuffing his device back in and looking at you. "Haru's calling, he's probably done with his phone call. I should get going before he nags at me."

"Right," You agreed and cleared your throat before crossing your arms. "I'll see you out." Noticing your lack of expressions, he smirked before following you out.

"I'll be waiting," He said as you exited the building, making you look at him in confusion. However, once you caught the look in his eyes, all your questions disappeared and you attempted to hide your embarrassment through laughter.

"Waiting for what?" Haru spoke up as he looked from his screen and back and forth between you and Daisuke.

"Just- tomorrow! You know, for the investigation." You answered a little too quickly and slapped yourself mentally, before regaining your composure. "Alright, then, I'll see you both tomorrow."

"That we will." With a confident look, Daisuke turned around and followed Haru down the street, leaving you to deal with your mind in a mess.

How can you be so unfair?

With that, you walked back into your building, hoping tomorrow would not test your limits.

you were studying in your room when your phone rang. you smiled to yourself as you picked it up immediately, knowing who was calling you at this late hour. “hey, my beautiful babe,” you chuckled as you heard your boyfriend’s voice.

“hey, what’s up?” 

“really? that’s the greeting i get from you?” you quietly laughed, trying not to wake your roommate up since it was already near midnight. you bet san was pouting just by the tone of his voice.

“I still love you though,” you replied, making san hum in delight. “are you still studying?” now it was your turn to hum as you scanned through the pages of your notebook to see how many more pages you need to read.

“I’m almost finished. two more pages,” you added. “just make sure to get some rest, okay?” humming in response, you pressed your phone in between your shoulder and ear as you gathered all your stuff, placing them back to where they originally were.

“how about you mister? how are you doing? any plans for your birthday?” you asked. san’s birthday was in two days, and he gets sulky by the fact that you couldn’t be with him on his special day.

“don’t even ask. I don’t have any plans. besides, you won’t even be here, so why bother?” san complained, making you chuckle. “I thought you’re celebrating with the guys?” you played with your pen while waiting for his reply.

“yeah, I mean— I am, but I’m always with them, so that’s not really a big deal for me.”

your talk on the phone with san went on, multi-tasking as you also read your remaining notes. “well, I suppose you should rest now milady,” you laughed, cringing at the nickname.

“I will”

“goodnight, my love.” you nodded, smiling even if you knew san couldn’t see you.

“goodnight, I love you.”

“I love you” both of you were smiling like an idiot even after when the call ended.

a smile was plastered on your face as you walked out of the examination site, humming as you made your way home.

you immediately took a quick shower, wearing something casual yet classy while you checked if all of your things were all set and ready to go.

sitting on the edge of your bed as you dialed a number from your contact, waiting for someone to pick up. “hey y/n! what’s up?” a loud voice greeted you, making you pull the phone away from your ear.

“hey wooyoungie, I’m on the way to the airport. I’ll see you guys in a few.” wooyoung started cheering, clearly excited to meet you again after a long time.

for more context, you and the other guys planned a surprise for san. you contacted his close friends a week before san’s birthday, saying that you were  planning to surprise him for his birthday. they were very supportive, helping and agreeing to all your plans, suggesting ideas as well, to make sure for a perfect birthday surprise. 

you arrived at the airport, paying the taxi driver after he helped you with your big suitcase, thanking him before walking inside the airport, going through security first.

after dropping your luggage in the drop-off area, and going through every process that’s needed, you finally got to your gate number, choosing a seat in the corner. there was about half an hour left before your 13 hour, no stopover flight.

you felt your phone buzz continuously from your hands as you took a sip of your hot coffee that you just bought. you checked to see who was calling, and it was your boyfriend.

“hi..” placing your coffee down, you smiled as you heard san’s husky voice, indicating that he just woke up. “good morning, slept well, huh?” he hummed in response, hearing the sheets shuffling as he groaned.

“don’t you have any classes for today?” you asked. “I actually have a lot to take today. plus, I need to work overtime for work tonight since my friend took the day off.” nodding, you started spacing out as san’s husky voice was getting to you. you suddenly miss him so much, and you couldn’t wait to see him.

“baby, you still there? are you doing something?” 

“n-no, it’s just..” you fiddled with you fingers, trying to find the right words to say.

“just what baby? you know you can tell me everything”

“nothing, I-i just miss you so much...” san was stunned by your sudden confession because you weren’t the type of person to say things like these. “me too y/n, I miss you so damn much. only God knows how much I want to go to you and hold you in my arms forever.”

you smiled at san’s sweet words, feeling your heart jump in excitement as your mind flew back to the thought of you surprising him. 

not soon after the phone call ended, the speakers announced your flight number’s departure. you grabbed your bag, holding your passport and plane ticket in your other hand, before walking in line, making your way inside the plane, waiting for take-off.

you slowly took your seatbelt off as the plane landed safely, the pilot saying their farewell speech as you fixed your things and your wrinkled clothes.

as soon as you got off the plane, you made your way inside the airport to pick your luggage up. while waiting for your suitcase to show up, you checked your phone to see a few missed calls and messages from san just a few hours ago. 

just as you were about to call him back, you received a call from wooyoung. “hey, wooyoung! you’re just in time. I just got off the plane.” you immediately answered, excited to see them.

“great! we’ll be there in a few minutes, hongjoong-hyung’s driving, see you!”

your suitcase finally came out, so you quickly got it out of the baggage carousel, heading straight towards the area where they will be picking you up. you sent a message to hongjoong that you were already waiting for them outside.

you praised yourself for wearing a jacket since it was already night when you landed and the weather was cold outside. thankfully, the boys immediately saw you outside, quickly greeting each other as hongjoong handed you a hot pack while wooyoung placed your luggage in the trunk. 

“so, how are you guys doing?” you asked on the way to the hotel you’re gonna be staying at. “I’m doing good, I guess. well, it’s not easy to live in a dorm with seven childish guys, is it?” you laughed, agreeing. “yah! we’re not childish- well, maybe the others are- but not me!” wooyoung protested.

“told you.” hongjoong mumbled, shaking his head.

the trip to the hotel was fun, full of laughter and bickering from hongjoong, who kept on teasing the younger one. they also told you about how san was doing and how he always talks about you 24/7.

“take a rest y/n. we need a lot of energy for tomorrow. good night,” hongjoong patted your shoulders. you nodded and thanked him as you turned to wooyoung, who handed you your suitcase. “we missed you so much, y/n. just wait ‘til san sees you tomorrow. I bet he’s gonna cry like a baby.” he joked as hongjoong told him to quickly get in the car and leave you alone, making both of you laugh as you waved your hand goodbye.

today was san’s birthday.

you decided not to send him a text or a phone call until the surprise, even though you really feel bad for not doing so. 

it was currently 8 in the morning. you just finished getting ready for the day, wearing a plain white shirt and jeans since you’ll just decorate the dance studio that you rented for a day with the others.

you grabbed your things before heading out of your hotel room to the lobby where hongjoong was waiting. “here, bought you some coffee.” you smiled, taking the cup of coffee from hongjoong. “thanks dad,” hongjoong scrunched his face, making you both laugh.

the studio was not far from the hotel, so the drive wasn’t that long. “we’re here! the others are already inside. they started decorating about half an hour ago.” taking your seatbelt off, you took a deep breath as you got out of the car, feeling nervous about seeing your and san’s close friends again after such a long time.

hongjoong lead you to the entrance, carefully opening the door, hoping to surprise all the people inside. you peeked through the door, seeing them all so busy for your boyfriend’s special day made you smile.

you finally stepped foot inside the studio, making them turn their heads in your direction, tons of shouting and your name mentioned everywhere. you cheerfully greeted all of them, catching up on all the things that you missed from one another.

after a bit of chit-chatting, all of you continued preparing, and decorating the studio since you guys will start by noon. 

“well, hello there, gorgeous.” you sneered at yunho, “aye, stop it with the compliments man, you know I’m not good with those.” you playfully hit his arms, making him laugh. “your lucky san isn’t here, or else he’d be giving you death glares already.” wooyoung suddenly said from behind. You shrugged and continued to check if everything was all set.

“i just received a text from hongjoong, they’ll be here in five minutes.” seonghwa announced. you quickly went outside to the car, to hide, and to also get the other cake that you specially bought for san.

meanwhile,

“ah hyung~ I told you I don’t want no surprises for my birthday,” san complained, obviously not in a good mood since you haven’t been replying to his texts and calls since yesterday. not even a single greeting for his birthday.

“just trust me on this one.” hongjoong demanded before driving off to God-knows-where. san stayed quiet for the whole ride, choosing to listen to his hyung for once.

hongjoong parked just outside the studio, getting out of the car with san following after him. “why are we here? I thought we’re going with the others?” hongjoong just kept quiet, going inside the studio first, leaving san in confusion.

walking towards the door, san carelessly opened it only to get startled when two confetti cannons popped from both of his sides, cheers and screaming heard from all over the room. “what the fuck is this?” san let out a shocked laugh.

“it’s a surprise, duh!” san’s body tensed as he heard a familiar voice from behind him. “happy birthday, dummy.” he slowly turned around, seeing you, his girlfriend who lived a thousand miles away, walking towards him, holding a shiber designed cake, smiling widely.

“well, what are you looking at? make a wish and blow the candle,” you added, making san smile, tears threatening to fall from his eyes. “my only wish is here already...” san blew the candle, getting it from you before placing it on the table.

you couldn’t help yourself, throwing yourself in his arms as san quickly caught you, hugging you tight. “I missed you so much,” he mumbled on your hair, arms wrapped around your lower back, your face buried on his chest.

he pulled away from the hug, placing a quick kiss on your lips, resting his forehead on yours.

“let’s get this party started, shall we?”

Thoughts on Kikaichu as actual Parasites.

Knowing how skin and the body generally works on a medical level, the "hive" aspect of the Aburame clan really drives me crazy. 'Cause parasites are real, obviously, but the size of Kikaichu beetles makes absolutely no sense in comparison to irl skin parasites. At least not in a bee hive sort of way lol

rambling because my mind craves logic and I'm specializing as a wound care nurse but it's literally anime so what do I expect lol

No, wounds don't freak me out, I'm more terrified of generally handling vomit and babies than I am a dehiscence of a 15cm long surgical site lol. The human body can literally take so much abuse before it really starts to give and try to alert you that you need help! And once you give it help, it really can come full circle to the wound 100% looking like it was never there. The body is an amazing thing <3

However the first thing that comes to mind when I hear the word "parasite" is always going to be "tapeworm". That's not gonna change. However, kikaichu are not worms and CERTAINLY don't grow that fucking huge or live that long. (A tape worm can live long enough to graduate with a fucking PhD. Can you believe?) I haven't been exposed to any urgent situations involving parasites yet, however, the one I would compare a Kikaichu to that is (unfortunately) also common is the scabies mite.

Very briefly, scabies mites (Sarcoptes scabiei) are technically a type of arachnid that grow no bigger than a bout 0.5mm in size, but CAN be seen with the naked eye if you're looking for them. They crawl around the skin and burrow specifically in the top layer of skin, called the epidermis. The epidermis is that protective layer of skin and can be between 0.5mm to 1.5mm thick depending on which part of the body you're looking at. After the epidermis, you have the dermal layer, which is where sweat glands, nerves, and capillaries are found. Scabie mites will not burrow that deep because they only burrow to lay their eggs and such. As they do this they can cause visible tunnels and other marks that can be mistaken for acne or other skin conditions if not properly identified. You'll most likely know because the itch is VERY BAD.

They're very easily spread by close contact and a scabies infestation needs to be treated with a prescribed pharmacological means.

However, kikaichu are definitely a lot bigger than 0.5mm. In the case of size, I would compare them at minimum to fruitflies/medflies, which grow up to 3-5mm and maximum to ladybugs 4-7mm.

3-7mm > 0.5-1.5mm... obviously. And the holes which Kikaichu swarm out of that the audience has seen before are about a size comparable Shino's nostrils, IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE!!

That would mean, in realistic terms, the Kikaichu are fucking around in Shino's body to the bone and muscles and THAT'S A REALLY SCARY THOUGHT. Even just passing the epidermis to the dermis is alarming! Compared to the dry, protective epidermis that can and does take damage, the dermis can be 1-4mm thick depending on where you're looking and is where skin does it's business. All together that becomes 0.5-5.5mm of space BARELY big enough for a fruit fly do mess around in. It makes just enough sense in terms of THAT size, but last time I checked, having the skin penetrated to the dermal layer is just asking for infection to happen. You're first natural line of defense has been breeched, there's a pretty good chance you're gonna be bleeding (blood vessels) and general body fluids are going to be draining, which is bad for a multitude of reasons, and there's damage that gonna affect the nerves, and realistically this shit is going to be ABSOLUTELY painful if they're constantly manipulating those areas near nerves. These kinda of things CAN make new connections and things like that, sometimes damage is forever. (Case by case basis).

So my first thought to more or less "magically" solve the problem with anime logic, is that first of all, it's an anime and logic doesn't have to apply haha.

On a more sci-fi level, in which kikaichu are smaller than we've seen them shown, maybe they have been purposefully been allowed to burrow into the dermal layer of the skin at least because the blood vessels seem to be in direct contact with the chakra system. Kikaichu's prefered food is chakra, but they WILL mutiny and eat their respective Aburame from the inside out if they don't balance their chakra smartly. So it's safe to say Kikaichu are at least carnivorous as well, and so I only imagine these absolute nightmares would swarm their prey in the wild, and actively bite through and burrow into the body of the prey until they found the chakra system and went to town on that poor unfortunate soul. Eaten alive, how the hell did they "tame" them in the first friggin' place??

I like to think two things:

1) Kikaichu are passed down from parent to child, and the parent has control over the Kikaichu until they have been RIGOROUSLY trained for generations to comprehend that this baby/child isn't food, it's a new hive. If bees can comprehend time, Kikaichu can comprehend what an Aburame is. If they insist on trying to drain the babe or the babe just can't tolerate them, the parent takes the Kikaichu back and the babe is assigned another insect or position in general. Like hell they're gonna try to force a relationship like that.

2) As part of the successful symbiotic relationship, Kikaichu regularly debride the tunnels and borrows that they carve into their respective Aburame, and are naturally intuitive in avoiding as many nerves and blood vessels as possible. The chance of infection is never 0%, however, kikaichu are pretty good about taking care of their tunnels, and so it gives the Aburame more time to focus on their things, like increasing the amount if chakra in their system. To ensure that they stay healthy, Aburame are encouraged to eat as much protein and Vit C possible every day, whether it be meat, beans, lentils, eggs, oranges, tomatoes, or even supplements as times modernize. The dermis is living tissue and as long as debridement/tunneling is going on, it needs to be nourished as much as possible.

I don't know how the hell Aburame deal with the obvious drainage that would be coming from their bodies, assuming the dermal layer really is free game for the Kikaichu. But the magical solution is that... they don't? Because... drainage is minimal. The Kikaichu just do such a good job lol. Maybe they purposefully... carve entrances to be flappy, or they purposefully create pocket spaces underneath seemingly healed areas of skin to easily burst open when necessary. That's the biggest thing for me, leaking body fluids. There's no way around that shit besides straight up denial lol Maybe they wear a special kind of dressing underneath their clothes, or that's directly applied with their clothes. Maybe that's what that cute little backpack is filled with, who knows!!

Idk man. I'm sure the Aburame authority forces encourages many of their non-hive members to pursue medical nin training in order to give the clan more privacy in general too. All medics that claim the Aburame name are exclusively used by the Aburame Clan. A non-Aburame medic may end up healing tunnels and burrows that were meant to stay open because "oops" and now you have an X amount of insects possibly suffocating within a completely sealed pocket of the skin, and also now there's a very good chance that after those insects die, that whole area is gonna frickin' abscess and cause infection induced tunnels the longer it's left alone and GROSS THAT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN! THERE IS A DELICATE, ORGANIZED, SELF-SUFFICENT PROCESS TO ALL THIS!! A PROCESS!!!

Like... the other ninja in the NartVerse can make as many jokes, jabs, and comments about the Aburame as they please (INO? BITCH??? but to be honest I still love her lol). But these MFers are constantly playing Russian Roulette with these high maintenance demon spawn from hell, and there are VERY little defences against Kikaichu, virtually none. Like the only thing I've ever seen actively thwart Kikaichu across all media is killing them with mass fire, countering them with large amounts of poison gas (both very exterminator like) or literally just feeding them chakra until they're so stupid full, they can't move, the little gluttons. As far as genjutsu, it's been stated that it's both effective and ineffective, so idk about that. But the Aburame are just SO set up to be the living breathing embodiment of Shinobi as defined by the NartVerse. They're whole clan culture relies on the threat of enemies. If they have no enemies, the whole relationship is an exhausting endeavor for literally no reason. It's not worth it if there's no one to fight or protect! But when there is a threat, you want them on YOUR side.

I suppose the best bet is to incapacitate the Aburame individual asap and the Kikaichu will tend the individual, making escape easier. But, if you DID manage to kill that Aburame right away, that particular Aburame's swarm is now suddenly without its food source and without restraint.

What do you THINK is gonna happen, bro?? The second an Aburame loses their grip on their consciousness due to external influences, the bugs go bonkers because I'm pretty sure Kikaichu are simply persuaded to be in this relationship and have NO tolerance for bullshit like alcohol and overheating temps. If their Aburame dies, they probably cause just as much chaos as they would as a wild, unattended swarm. Then YOU BETTER HAVE fire or poison gas or SOMETHING handy. The only way to calm them down is to offer them chakra and a new host with equal or even more chakra reserves. Otherwise the mutineers must be eradicated.

And for serious... Like, any deeper and the kikaichu would be in the hypodermal/subcutaneous layer of the skin and that's where a lot of connective tissue is located. Let's NOT mess with that shit, shall we? NOT a good idea. It's called connective tissue for a reason first and foremost...

Overview: this takes place in season 7 episode 2. You joined the BAU after the death of Emily and JJ’s departure. However when they both come back, everyone is shook up.

Author’s note: so I have been wanting to write another short story about Spencer but couldn’t get myself to do it. Glad I got inspired by episode 2 of season 7. This is when Spencer is still mad at JJ about Emily. The unsub is the one who is neuro-divergent and is obsessed with his brother’s wife. If you have any suggestions on how to write a better Spencer Reid, I would love that. I struggle with writing an accurate Reid because he is supposed to be so smart and I’m the type of person who has been told she’s “dumb” so it’s an insecurity of mine. Give me advice if you have any just be nice. P.S. the formatting on this is so weird. I don’t have my laptop rn because it’s getting fixed and the mobile version of this app sucks lol

You and Spencer were never really good friends. You two were good coworkers and you always got along well, but it took Spencer a lot to let people behind his wall. So when you joined the team from the whit collar unit, after Emily’s death. You could tell everyone on your new team was grieving, and because you didn’t know them all that well you didn’t pry. Though slowly each member let things slide to you about their grieving. You didn’t expect that to happen but you weren’t surprised. You were always a reliable person, old friends would come out of nowhere just to talk to you about their problems, or random people in cabs, on the subway, etc. You just had that air about you, one that was dependable, nonjudgmental, and understanding. Your family called it your superpower.

So when Emily turned out to be alive and JJ and Hotch knew the whole time, the team was stunned. You didn’t fully comprehend the travesty of what they went through but you understood the pain and relief that accompanied them. Knowing they probably had 100 million different conflicting emotions swirling in them you suspected they’d be going through “it” the next months.

As JJ walked into the BAU with Prentiss talking about how she had passed all the qualifications to finally become a profiler, JJ saw Spencer come out of the elevator. “Hey, where have you been?” JJ asked him, “I wanted to do brunch this weekend”

“I had to deal with some stuff with my mom,” he flipped through the pages in a file to avoid eye contact with his friend, “have you seen Y/N?” he finished.

“Uh, she’s at her desk I think,” Spencer sped off to your desk. “He hates me,” JJ finished.

You sat at your desk looking over case files when Spencer came rushing up to you. “Hey, Y/N,” he greeted you and looked around.

“What’s up?” You asked expecting there to be a reason he came to your desk.

“Nothing just wanted to say hi,” he saw JJ and Prentiss go into the round table room.

“Well, hi,” you laughed and followed his gaze to your two co-workers. “Ahh, I see,” you said out loud.

His head looked down at you,” what do you mean ‘ahh, I see,’?” He was obviously annoyed by your statement.

You raised your hands up in surrender, “nothing, nothing. Shall we go?” You stood up and tilted your head towards the conference room. He nodded his head.

When you guys walked in and you went to sit in an open seat next to Morgan, Spencer lightly grabbed your elbow and pulled you the opposite way and had you sit between him Emily and JJ. You just looked at him knowing what he was doing. Although you gave him a glare to indicate you didn’t like being manhandled by him, you secretly enjoyed it. You were unsure why it did it but it created a feeling in you that you were not ready to associate with your coworker. He just gave you a bit of a ‘don’t-say-anything’ glare and looked back down at the file. You rolled your eyes and felt Prentiss looking at you. You shrugged your shoulders as if to say ‘I don’t know why he just did that’.

In walked Rossi and Garcia, “look master of all things Italian, I am having a Fellini festival at my house this weekend and I must serve the beautiful food of his country.” Garcia insisted.

“Maybe you should show a Disney movie and stick with burgers,” Rossi responded, still a bit offended by the pig substitute.

“You know, Rossi, you could always give Penelope a cooking lesson,” Derek suggested.

“I could help,” you spoke up from across the table. Everyone looked at you confused, “You all act like I’m not Italian. I used to go back there every summer to visit my extended family,” you rolled your eyes and defended yourself.

“Oh my gosh that would be amazing. That would be like- that would be like the iron chef meets the BAU,” Garcia looked back and forth between you and Rossi. You felt Spencer’s eyes on you and looked at him. His scrunched up eyebrows and set jaw told you that he didn’t know that about you or maybe he forgot. You just smiled at him, and tilted your head like it was nothing.

“And we could do it at your house,” Garcia looked over at Rossi.

“I don’t have a house. I have a mansion,” he laughed.

“All right let’s get started,” Hotch instructed.

Everytime JJ talked at the round table, Reid couldn’t even look at her. He kept his gaze down and you saw the muscle in his jaw bone tighten as he clenched his it. The victims were girls who all looked the same, helping a bit to narrow down the victimology. The dump sights also helped narrow down the geographical, although nothing was ever set in stone right off the bat. Everytime Spencer spoke you could tell there was hidden meaning beneath it all directed towards JJ.

On the jet you dug in deeper into the case. You started to notice Spencer stuck close to you, as if you were an extra layer of shielding from JJ. He sat next to you and when JJ spoke he’d either look down at the files in his hands or at your files in your hand. “Dave you and I will talk to the parents.Y/LN head over with us to the police station, and get us set up. Go over what they have and talk to the detectives. Morgan and Prentiss go to the disposal sites. JJ, you and Reid to the abduction sites,” Hotch ordered. JJ gave a soft smile to Spencer and you felt him tighten up next to you, and look away from her. Her smile faded into concern and annoyance and looked at you for help. You just shrugged unsure how to help.

Once you collected all the information on the crime board at the station you helped out Hotch and Rossi at the coroner's office. Then you got the call that there was a third victim. There he burned the woman’s tongue with sulfuric acid. As you, Rossi, JJ, and Reid looked over the body. The quips JJ and Reid were throwing at each other was escalating quickly.

“— instead of dealing with it. He’s acting out,” JJ looked up at Reid as she spoke about the unsub but also meant it for Reid. If looks could inflict pain, the look Reid responded to JJ with would have seriously injured her. Spencer walked off in anger. JJ looked around for help, or maybe back up. You looked at her giving her ‘I’ll take care of it’ look and went after Spencer.

Once you caught up to him and tried to talk to him he wasn’t having it. He quickly dived into perfecting the profile and ignored all conversation about anything else. He was reinforcing the walls he built around himself.

Now back at the station, you all delivered the profile to the police force. Spencer was still not looking at JJ.

Once the profile was delivered Spencer went into the room where the BAU was working out of, JJ following him.

“Spence. Look we gotta talk about this,” JJ insisted.

“I don’t want to talk about it,” he responded.

“I get it, okay? You’re disappointed with the way we handled Emily,”

“Listen I have a lot going on alright,”

“You know what I think it is, you’re mad that Hotch and I were able to hold our micro-expressions at the hospital. And you weren’t able to detect our deception,” JJ finally getting angry and defending herself.

“You think it’s about my profiling skills? Jennifer, listen the only reason you were able to manage my perceptions is because I trusted you. I came to your house for ten weeks in a row crying over losing a friend,” the tears beginning to well in both of their eyes, “and not once did you have the decency to tell me the truth.”

“I couldn’t,”

“You couldn’t or you wouldn’t,”

“I couldn’t,” she shouted and defended herself.

“What if I started taking dilaudid again. Would you have let me?” he asked.

“You didn’t,” she answered, confused why he was asking.

“Yeah, but I thought about it,” he confessed, and hurt even more that she didn’t realize how low he actually was during that time.

“Spence,” she called out as he tried to walk away, “I’m sorry.”

“It’s too late, all right?” He walked away from her.

“Reid,” Emily called for him and looked back at JJ.

You followed Spencer out the door. You knew it was risky to seek him out right now but you couldn’t help yourself. You had to try and help him. You couldn’t explain the pull he had on you right now but you usually followed your instincts and they hadn’t let you down yet.

“Spencer, wait up,” you tried to catch up to his long strides.

“Are you here to tell me off, or ask me to apologize to JJ? Because if so, don’t waste your breath. I’m not going to,” he angrily twirled around to you, which made you stop yourself before running into him.

“I wasn’t — I wasn’t going to say that. I know why you’re mad. And I think the way your acting is justified, maybe a bit immature but it’s justified,” you answered.

Spencer looked confused at your response then angrily he said “why am I acting this way then? Why am I so justified?” He was testing you in some way. If you said the wrong thing he’d yell at you too, and he would build that wall around himself so high no one would ever be allowed in again. He was hurting and right now he felt like hurting others was the only way to feel like he was in control.

“You feel betrayed. You understand why Emily had to fake her death. You understand why no one on the team was allowed to know but you don’t understand why JJ was in on it and how she kept her cool. You don’t understand how she could watch your heart break over the loss of a loved one and stand there with the knowledge to save you from all your grieving. JJ is your best friend, you trust her and love her. And best friends are supposed to help take away the pain, and you feel betrayed and taken advantage of because of that,” you finished. You could tell by the look he gave you that the wall he was building was not prepared for you to hit it so hard it cracked. His face went from openness and feeling seen, to defensive and angry at you not giving him a reason to yell at you. “You want her to understand and feel the pain she caused you. which might be why you are acting out? But when the time comes you’ll forgive her because you know deep down what you need JJ and her friendship and eventually you’ll remember all she did for you. Right now you’re hurting, but the way you get rid of that pain isn’t about being mean or hurting her, you’ll need to remember your love for your friend. And find it in yourself if you can forgive her. Am I right?” You asked him, but you already knew the answer. He let out a sigh and looked down at you. He looked at you for the first time in all his time of knowing you. You understood what he was going through more so than his closest friend, and even more so than some of his teammates who had known him for years. How could he have overlooked you for so long. He quickly looked down at your lips and the tension between you two changed. The breathing between you two became heavy and noticeable. He turned quickly and stormed off.

Eventually you all caught the unsub and saved the young girl. This time on the plane though Spencer sat in the back. He spread his stuff across the table indicating he didn’t want anyone to sit there. You took the hint, and even though you had never been close to Spencer other than him using you today for an emotional defense, you felt a coldness being away from him. A coldness, you didn’t even want to know where it would lead you.

Emily walked back to him after a short time on the plane. You could tell what she was doing and thought it was a good idea. You looked at them and analysed their behaviors. You saw the shift in them as Emily laughed for a second and from the back of Spencer you saw him move in his seat to avoid the subject. Emily leaned in as she began to explain her side of what had happened. Spencer was still mad, but by the way his shoulders sloped he was more tired than angry.

You got dressed up in one of your favorite black dresses with knee high black boots and a fancy long coat. As you pulled into the parking lot, you were a bit self conscious about what you were about to do.

You walked up the steps, found the door you were looking for, and knocked lightly. You heard some shuffling around and then heard the door unlock.

“Hey,” you spoke softly as you took in Spencer standing before you. He quickly looked you up and down and smiled, “what are you doing here? I thought you were helping Rossi teach the others how to cook?” He asked.

“Well I was, but I thought my friend might need me more tonight,” you softly smiled at him. “I was wondering if you wanted to go get something to eat,” you shyly asked, “or if you have plans, we can do something another time,” You looked at his attire and enjoyed the blue sport coat he was wearing, along with the colorful shirt under it. His hair was brushed with a light amount of product in it. It was like he was ready to go out.

“No, I was actually going to go to Rossi’s,” he admitted and you knew what that meant for him. It was more than going to Rossi’s, it was actually forgiving JJ and Emily.

“Well, I can take us, if you want,” you offered as you jingled your keys in front of him.

He gave a soft laugh, and nodded his head as he grabbed his stuff from his apartment.

“I just need to stop somewhere real quick to pick something up,” you added.

When you showed up to Rossi’s you were obviously late. But the smile on everyone’s face as Spencer walked in the room was worth it. You walked behind them with your arms wrapped around Derek and let everyone take in Spencer. You quickly handed Rossi, the cannoli’s you made and brought for desert.

After everyone said hello and got to cheers their wine glasses, it was time to cook. Instead of you cooking, Rossi decided you needed to help supervise. As you reminded everyone what the texture of the pasta had to be, and how the pancetta should look like cooked, you felt yourself always catching Spencer’s eyes and smiling.

“What’s that about?” Emily asked from behind you.

You turned startled by her, “what do you mean?”

“You and Reid, you guys came together and now you won’t keep your eyes off of each other. So what’s going on?” She asked.

You shook your head, “nothing is going on. I just gave Spencer a ride,” you responded.

“Uh-huh,” Emily skeptically looked at you. You rolled your eyes at her. Once you knew Emily wasn’t looking you slipped a glance at Spencer again and saw him smiling and laughing at something Garcia said. You couldn’t help but smile at them.

“I should say thank you,” you heard JJ say behind you.

You turned and looked at him, “why?” You asked a bit confused.

“You brought Spencer here, and he’s talking to me again. I can’t help but think you had something to do with that,” she answered.

“I didn’t do anything. He came to that conclusion on his own,” you responded.

“Well, either way, thank you for being there for him. I know he has a hard time opening up and trusting people,” she whispered. You nodded your head unsure how to respond. Out of everyone on the team you knew JJ and Emily the least as they weren’t on the team when you joined and had just returned.

As the finishing touches were put on everyone’s pasta you took a seat at Rossi’s big dinner table. You were used to sitting next to Garcia and Rossi. You expected the same people to sit near you but Spencer was quick to steal the seat where Garcia usually sat. You looked up at the young doctor standing over you as he placed a bowl of pasta in front of you. His smile told you everything. The weight of his anger had lifted and he felt rejuvenated. You gave him an odd look as he placed his glass of wine in the spot next to you. He just gave you a goofy face back. You ignored it, but you couldn’t help the feeling bubbling in your chest as you over thought him picking the seat next to you instead of next to the others like JJ, Emily or Derek.

You felt bloated after your meal but it didn’t really matter to you because you felt loved. With your Italian heritage, eating and sharing moments like this is where you felt most loved. This was no exception. You loved this BAU family that you were a part of. As the night went on and moved from the dining table to outside in Rossi’s backyard. You crawled into a loveseat couch and Spencer followed and sat next to you. You pulled a blanket off the back of the seat and draped it across you both. Spencer smiled in gratefulness.

“Say Grazie to the wonderful Y/N, for making and bringing the cannoli,” he announced and brought out the delish Italian treat.

“Oh my gosh I love cannoli,” squealed Garcia. Each person grabbed one and a silence fell over the group as they ate their cannoli. You couldn’t help but snuggle into Spencer a bit as the night moved forward and the talking kept going.

Slowly people left. Hotch was one of the first to go as he had to get back to Jack, then Derek and Garcia, next was JJ and Emily, and you and Reid.

The drive back to Spencer’s was filled with music theory facts, as the two of you got on the subject because you played your favorite songs playlist. One by one you each played songs that mean something to you. You enjoyed hearing the songs that made Spencer Reid, Spencer. They were all over the spectrum of music from classical to pop to indie to folk. You two sat in the parking lot for about an hour before you felt yourself yawning often.

“I should go so you can get home,” Spencer noted sadly.

“Unfortunately, I think you’re right,” you agreed.

“Unfortunately?” His right eyebrow was raised flirtatiously.

You blushed, “yeah, I had a fun night with you.” You looked down in embarrassment.

Spencer moved to place his hand on yours. He hesitated for a second then covered your hand. “I had a fun night too,” he admitted. You looked up at him and smiled.

“Good, because I still owe you a dinner,” you added playfully.

Spencer pulled his lips in and bit them, then let them slide out into a soft smile. “I look forward to it,” he responded.

He waited at the apartment complex entrance for you to pull away.

The memory of tonight would be one you cherished for a long time.

What do you wish people wouldn't call you? The only one I don't really like is Girt calling me "kid." He doesn't mean it in a derogatory way or anything like that; he's just always called me that since I was a high school freshman and he was a senior. What do people say about your name upon learning it for the first time? They don't say anything; my name is very ordinary. Why did you choose the hair length you have? I have a few reasons. The biggest is because I was just bored of average, long hair, and the fact I was at the time having a very hard time with self-care. My hair would get incredibly knotted to where it was hard to even brush it sometimes. Makes me shiver thinking back on it. For my own sanity and ease, it needed to be gone. Did the best moment of your life happen at summer camp? >> You ever get to that point where you just resign yourself to taking surveys you’ve already taken? Because I’m pretty sure I’ve taken 75% of the surveys I run into but it’s not like there’s a great influx of new surveys to take, so what’s a motherfucker to do but just make repeat performances... Anyway, some really great moments have happened to me at summer camp; I’m pretty nostalgic about the camps I’ve gone to at Easton Mountain. They were great experiences, even with the bullshit that sometimes happened.

Do you get tired of fakebook? lol >> I’m just tired of facebook in general -- how ubiquitous it is, how much data it collects and what it does with said data, everything about Mark Zuckerberg, etc. How random people behave on facebook is of much less concern to me than the above.

Are you a poser on facebook or are you real? >> I don’t really use facebook. I have one for the purposes of establishing lines of contact, and that’s it.

And for one, I don’t think being poor means I’m automatically humble, I think it means that I have to look at life and at other people in a different way than I would if I wasn’t in this position. It means I have to acknowledge my socioeconomic dependence, which means treating people like objects or means to an end is significantly more disadvantageous to me than it would be to a rich person. It means I have to budget my indulgences, and can’t just be capricious and lavish with my spending, and I can’t just throw money at a problem to make it go away. I don’t know what it would be like to be rich -- I don’t know how having those advantages would change me as a person, and I don’t know what unseen disadvantages would arise. I know who I am now, and despite the hardships of being below the poverty line as an individual (and only a little less so as a member of a household), I more-or-less like how I am. I see no reason to complicate things.

Do you know any humble rich people? >> I don’t know any actually rich people at all. I know upper middle class folks because Sparrow is related to them, but while they do seem to lack class consciousness a lot of the time, they still mostly live in a reality I can halfway comprehend.

Do you think everyone should have a right to live, and by that I mean live a comfortable life? >> The problem with this is that, as a human being who is invested in lessening suffering for all living creatures, I feel as though people should have this right. What I do think is that social systems can absolutely stand to be more supportive to all peoples, and we should absolutely work towards that. We should always seek ways to ease suffering. But we should also expect that even our striving has the possibility of creating suffering, and weigh that against the good we believe we’re doing. It’s just a constant process, I think. Trying to be more conscientious and more humane humans than the humans that came before us.

The Fae VS Changelings VS Humanity part 2

I’m clearing a few things up from my post last night, I was wrong about a couple of things in my argument and I’d like to apologize. It was late at night when I posted it, so I wasn’t wording things how I should have.

I stated something that includes anyone who says they know the Fae/Fey, and I didn’t clarify if I meant people who are faking or who are for real.

When I said “people who claim, and I mean thoroughly try to tell others they know the Fae or are the Fae, or were a Fae in a past life, are in the wrong” *i* was wrong. Because what I actually meant were people who try to mislead others by lying that they know the Fae, or are in contact with them, etc, when they are not. I know there are people on here who say they know/are friends with the Fae and they have no ill will, I did not mean those people. It is also no human’s place on this site to tell them they’re dumb, stupid, or the like. That is wrong, so do not attack anyone for having a different view than your own.

Please keep in mind anything posted in text form is very hard to understand due to not hearing their voice or seeing their actions while speaking. When you read something, you read it how you interpret it- even if it is not how it was supposed to be understood. This also goes for typing something out. You know what you meant- and make the mistake of assuming other people get it that way as well- and that’s what I did, so I’m sorry.

When I mentioned that certain things are impossible- I was also wrong. Again, it was late and I worded it incorrectly.

I could not tell you 100% what something is or isn’t, there’s many things humans are yet to understand, and many things that are left up to imagination when it comes down to mythology. I knew that, I know that,

A-kon Artist Alley: Art Theft & Staff Indifference

Last weekend i was at A-Kon, an anime convention in Ft. Worth, Texas. this was my 3rd year tabling at their artist alley and almost certainly my last. while i’m disappointed to say that, what took place over the weekend was unacceptable and disrespectful to every creator that bothered to show up there.

if you are a creator who has ever been to or have considered tabling at an artist alley, please consider reading. thank you.

before i continue, i’d like to say that i don’t blame any one single person for this, and i do believe that there were lots of people trying to do the right thing, but ultimately those who have the responsibility and the power to protect the artists failed to do so. i am making this post because i think it is important for as many artists as possible to know what happened at A-kon 2018 in the hopes that the staff is more aggressive about their own policies in the future - and if not, at least let people know to avoid a convention where important rules that keep thieves OUT of artist alley are ignored.

moving on to the events of the con:

on Thursday evening i set up my table next to an empty corner table. the tables are set up in an island format, so every island has 4 corners which get 2 tables instead of one to form a square shape. when i came in Friday morning - the first day of the con - the corner was still empty. 

about halfway through the day, a few people arrived to start setting up there. at first i thought they were late, but i later found out that they were waitlisted and were offered the table to replace whoever was originally supposed to be there. this will be important later.

a few hours later they ended up setting up this: 

now a setup like this is typically something you see in the vendor’s hall, where actual companies sell licensed products and other merchandise not made by the vendors.

this setup is highly uncommon for artist alley and most certainly violates both clauses of this A-kon artist alley display rule:

not to mention another rule stating you can only take up 4 feet of space behind you, where they had an entire table set up for their merchandise.

you can trust me when i say that at most artist alleys there is not only not enough space for this monstrosity to be set up to begin with, but would be asked by staff to be torn down almost immediately.

but that is really only the tip of the iceberg, because the red flags started going up way before they finished setting up.

although the pictures are a bit blurry, you may notice something strange about the products on display - they all look like they’re from different artists.

and indeed, many of them are - in fact, it seemed apparent as the weekend went on that none of the work for sale at this booth was made by the people running it.

now proxy selling at A-kon and many other cons is allowed, but this is what the rule says:

This is where my earlier point about this table being waitlisted comes in to play. I have to assume the people running it were local, because a staff member implied that they were basically notified during the weekend that a table had opened up and they could come in to take the their place.

When you sign up to most conventions, you are asked to post a portfolio link, and part of doing that is to vet the people coming in to make sure they have.. well, a portfolio. You want to make sure the artists coming in to artist alley will be selling their own work.

and while I have no idea what link they gave the staff, the only website they had on display was an Etsy page where you can order a custom made phone case.

No tumblr, no deviantart, no pixiv, no instagram, no website..nothing. So there’s only two possibilities here:

The vendors set up a fake portfolio site full of some or all of the art on display here claiming it to be their own, and A-kon staff believed it

A-kon didn’t look at their portfolio at all, and just took the $275 from them without bothering to vet them at all

Now some of you may be asking why I would assume they would lie about claiming some of the art to be their own. Here’s where things get a little weird.

On Saturday, I was able to find one of the artists who made the art on one of the pillows they were selling. They were an artist in a foreign country thousands of miles away not attending the convention. The artist told me that the vendors had permission to use their art, but the story the vendors told was a little..different.

When the staff confronted the vendors about concerns of stolen art, the vendors claimed that the artist was their sister, but that she was currently on vacation and couldn’t attend. In fact, they claimed that all the art they had for sale was made by their family.

now why would you tell a bizarre lie like this if you had permission from every single one of your proxy artists? the only answer is that they clearly didn’t, and needed a blanket excuse to cover all their bases.

to make matters worse, they also refused to give any contact information to the staff for all the artists in their “family” that were not attending the convention.

the staff didn’t really seem to care about this at all? i found that a little bizarre. this kind of behavior is beyond suspicious and i can’t imagine how naive you’d have to be to think nothing fishy was going on with sketchy “proxy” vendors who have no problem lying straight to your face. if your one job is to enforce the rules of Artist Alley and you can’t do it, why are you even there?

anyway, it gets worse.

take a look at some of these phone cases they had for sale.

what you’re seeing here is not just a mix of fanart from various artists, but also copyrighted photos of the K-pop group BTS and officially licensed art and stitches from anime like Himouto! Umaru-chan, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Free!, Diabolik Lovers, Ouran High School Host Club and probably many others I don’t recognize.

Just to point out a few easy-to-find examples: here’s a stitch from the anime Himouto! Umaru-chan, ripped directly from the anime and printed out in a phone case.

How about that Halloween-themed FMA:Brotherhood phone case in the first image? Well, just type “fullmetal alchemist halloween” into Google Images and it’s the first result!

This is a scan of official promotional art for FMA that there are hundreds of results for.

How about that one of Free! Iwatobi Swim Club? Turns out it’s official art from the Free! Eternal Summer 2015 Calendar - sold, created, owned and licensed by none other than Kyoto Animation, the studio that made it.

I can’t speak for all the fanart on display here as it’s very difficult to find just through google searching, but even if I could, I wouldn’t want to drag them in to this - because at least one of them was aware this was going on, even though the vendors lied about who they were. all I can tell you is that many attendees and artists in my island recognized many art pieces on their products and knew the artists were not present and not aware their art was being sold.

so while these vendors may have had permission to proxy sell some of the stuff they had, it’s fairly obvious that this wasn’t the case for everything, and they lied to the staff to try and cover it up.

as I said earlier, on Saturday I expressed my concerns about the items on sale to the Artist Alley control booth. I even went through the trouble of showing them how to find the art through reverse image search to prove that it was stolen while trying to run my table solo. funnily enough - as i was talking to a staffer at the control booth, an attendee was also complaining about the same booth to another staffer with pictures of art on pillows from artists he recognized who were not present at the convention. I thought that was funny.

at the end of the day, a number of staff appeared on-site to question the vendors about their merchandise. statements were taken from me and a few other artists nearby, and it looked like maybe something would be done about this blatant theft on display.

but as i returned to sell on Sunday, the booth was still up and fully operational. when i asked why, the A-kon AA staff replied via twitter that it was “pending review”. another artist was told that they traced all this art (lol) and that tracing was allowed, however this contradicts another one of their rules:

by this point, the con was almost over - the vendors had gotten away with it, despite numerous voices of concern coming from artists and attendees alike - and indeed, this booth was allowed to sell stolen art all weekend uninhibited to unknowing attendees.

as for what other creative excuses the vendors may have had to tell the staff, if the staff even cared or they were actually duped by their obvious lies i don’t know.

here’s the point: artist alley is supposed to be a space for individual artists to sell their own creations. and while some labor was at least spared on the phone cases, the centerpiece is clearly the art, and the art did not belong to these vendors. none of the art belonged to these vendors.

so let’s break down the facts about what took place here:

a corner table was sold to waitlisted vendors in artist alley at a-kon (this means a-kon made double their money on this corner table..really makes you think 🤔 🤔 🤔 )

the vendors’ products were not vetted as the staff was obviously unaware of what was being sold

the vendors broke multiple display rules and nothing was done

the vendors lied to staffers and were caught lying and nothing was done

the vendors were selling stolen art and nothing was done

the vendors refused to give out contact information they were supposed to have for the artists they were proxying and nothing was done

the a-kon staff either does not take their own rules seriously, enforce them in any way, or are incompetent or otherwise incapable of doing so

at this point, the artist alley at A-Kon may as well be a vendor space where greasy conmen and thieves can just slap art on whatever and make a killing, because that is how i felt after watching what was essentially a dog and pony show of A-Kon staff pussyfooting around an issue that should’ve been dealt with swiftly and sternly.

this shit shouldn’t fly and while the vendors already got off scot-free, i can only hope that shedding light on this will help with stopping this issue from spreading, because you can bet that if other art thieves catch wind of the fact that A-Kon staff don’t give a shit about enforcing their own rules that they’ll tag along for the free ride.

When I see children being ripped from their parents, or in an earlier episode this season, people desperate to escape to another country, and then I see it echoed in real life, it is hard to take. Dystopias are less entertaining to watch when you live in a country that seems to be accelerating toward the same.”

As adaptations go, the second season was always going to be a rough one. I can’t say that it was successful. They’ve turned June/Offred into an asshole, and they made Serena so inconsistent we don’t even know what to expect moment to moment. That’s not good writing, y’all.”

I do take your reassurances at face value, of course, and I know I often need reminding. but I also try to remember that you’ve been through a hell of a lot emotionally. I only know what you’ve told me; I don’t have your lived experiences. there’s a lot that you’ve gone through that I don’t even know about, and you don’t have to tell me about it-- it’s enough to know it happened. I can’t expect you to be as open about emotion as I am, or even able to feel things like I do (and I’ve been pretty dulled myself). maybe I’ve been reading you wrong at times; it’s hard to, especially through text. but I can hear it in your voice sometimes, I think. something flat. could be exhaustion, could be everything. of course I forgive your lacking in reciprocal effort; I appreciate all that you do give me. I know you’re trying, and you’re trying because you want to, not because you think I expect you to. it’s not easy. but you know as well as I do that shrugging everything off and staying in the emotionless void isn’t healthy for you.

from what I can at least guess about you, you’re a genuinely kind and caring person who has had a lot of his emotional innocence, so to speak, torn from him. you’re right: your emotion isn’t worthless. but that’s something you have to internalize yourself. I’ve been in similar dark places, but I don’t think it’s near to the degree you have. not that pain is a competition; it’s not. I just know that I can’t fully understand the things you’ve been feeling, or... not feeling. regardless, I know you know it’s not healthy and you want to move forward from it, and I’m glad to be there for you while you work through it. that’s a kindness I think anyone dealing with trauma deserves. anywho! travel plans. like I said, most of the issue is logistics. I’m looking at potential flights and I think a reasonable roundtrip is about 9 days; including 2 for travel, that’s a full week for adventuring. I’m flexible, of course, but I’m not the one with a job, lol. I don’t know what airlines would be best (though I did just find a flight on Icelandair, one 55m stop in Keflavik, July 10-19, for $1100 roundtrip), so if you wanna help out with searching you’re more than welcome to take a look yourself. I’d prefer shorter layovers if possible; none of those 27h total trips, lmao. nothing’s direct from Dulles unfortunately, but it is a major international hub, like JFK, so often I’ll be able to find flights to other major destinations from here. which is gr8, because it’s literally a 10-15 minute drive from my house. we have two other major airports here: Reagan national and BWI. personally I prefer Dulles because it’s closer, but if you can find a cheaper and/or direct flight out of the other ones, I’ll find a way to get there lol.

I’m going to be in PA for farm jam from, likely, July 3-7th. I’ll have to see how I feel about what day I’m coming home. I may or may not want to stay til the 8th. but anyway I don’t want to leave on an international flight *too* soon after I get home. I’ll have to drive 4 hours home after spending 4 days camping in the woods on a farm, unpack from camping, and then pack again, and I only have so much energy. I’ve done it before (got back from Iceland and drove to PA the next morning), but it’s not terribly fun. I think if I can make myself come home on the 7th, or at least early on the 8th, I can leave the 10th at the earliest. I’m going to look at July 10-19 as my reference, since that’s also one of the cheapest roundtrips that I can find (for some reason wednesdays are cheaper traveling days?), but those days might change a little. I’ll let you know if I decide on something for sure, but if you want to look up Airbnbs (or if you can find cheaper flights, lmao), you’re welcome to use the 10-19th as a general reference point as well.

I have no qualms about Airbnbs. it would be easier booking-wise to get the flight and hotel together, but I’m cool with having a little place out of the city for the week. the genuine experience, as you say, lol. the coast would be lovely, but I’ll take whatever you find that you like! as far as itinerary, I’m down for everything. I got real excited about that owl sanctuary, lol. anything with animals is great with me. can we see highland cattle too?? I do know I’m gonna want to check out one or two of the record stores in Glasgow; I think that’s my new Travel Thing, lol. going to a city, checking out the record stores. gotta bring records home. that’s my kinda souvenir. everything else, I’m down for too! I love learning about history, seeing old churches and castles, historical sites, all that jazz. I love the sound of that island too! I totally get what you mean about not doing all the typically touristy stuff. I mean, I live just outside Washington DC. I know the tourist traps are a waste of time and money and they’re not the ~real experience~. I love the sound of not taking the beaten path, though. and how often do you have a personal local tour guide? lmao

the only worries I have, really, are my energy levels and my traveling anxiety. neither of those are your responsibility, but they do affect me literally every time I travel, even if I think they won’t.

the anxiety has its roots in my emetophobia, for sure. for some reason my brain feels like the worst thing that could possibly happen is me getting sick while I’m traveling, and then of course I get nervous about it, and what accompanies the nervousness? nausea. shit writes itself. I know it happens, I’m very conscious of it, but that doesn’t stop it. I’ll bring klonopin as a security blanket, likely won’t need it, but mostly what helps is just, like, making sure I eat something, lol. I don’t tend to eat much when I travel anyway, but not eating tends to make the problem worse and I need something in my stomach, obviously. being distracted helps too. something to focus on, someplace to go or see. I’ll let you know how I’m feeling, though, so don’t worry about needing to check in on me. I’m not a nervous wreck all the time.

then there’s the energy levels. I have no earthly way of knowing what they’re going to be like in July. right now I don’t have much energy to do much of anything, but sometimes, especially if I’m subconsciously nervous, I won’t have an off switch. and sometimes I say “not a lot of energy” but I push myself anyway and surprise myself. it’s incredibly hard to predict my day-to-day now, without the traveling nerves, and it’ll be almost impossible to predict from now if something in my medical future changes. so, basically, it’s something to keep in mind but nothing to control for.

I’m pretty low-energy in general, but I can walk a good bit, so don’t worry about pushing me! I’ll let you know what I can handle. it’s probably safe to put one big thing in a day, 2-3 tops if they don’t have much travel time between them. better to leave time open to fit in more things anyway than to over-book and not be able to get to them all. I never know what my sleep’s going to be like, but I can almost guarantee it’s going to be terrible. it usually is when I travel. this also isn’t your responsibility, so don’t let me wreck your sleep schedule for when you have to get back to work, lol. I’m fine staying up late by myself if I’ve got wifi or if I bring a book or something; I can’t expect you to have the same crazy erratic sleep schedule as traveling-me. I’ll let you know if something is or isn’t okay, what I’m up for, all that good stuff. so I’d say definitely plan in all the stuff you want to do plus a few record shops, but leave some wiggle room for late starts, fitting more things in, or the possibility that I might not be able to get to everything in a day. not saying I’ll be struggling that hard, but wiggle room is always good so no one is disappointed lol

anyways I have no worries that it’ll be a great trip 😊literally everything you mentioned sounds wonderful, and I’m already excited! I do worry slightly that we still barely know each other and have never spoken face to face, lol. but I’m sure that’ll happen in due time before July. it’s one thing to meet an internet stranger in your city, but in another country? as a solo female traveler that does make me nervous. I like to think I have a pretty decent sense of the kind of person you are, but you really never know. it’ll certainly help ease my mind to get to know you better over the course of the next few months.

I don’t want to alarm you and I’m probably not supposed to tell you at all, but I’d rather be upfront about it. the background check I’m currently undergoing for my [future] job requires me to inform them of every non-US citizen I have “close and continuing contact” with. you and I weren’t talking yet when I filled out the background check form, but I do have to keep them updated or risk losing my chance at the job. they won’t do anything with the information I give them; everyone has friends and family in other countries, and the US doesn’t have any beef with Scotland that I’m aware of, lol. but I will need to give them basic information, especially if I’m leaving the country to visit. I would have to do it even if I weren’t planning on visiting and we kept talking, but this seems like an appropriate time to bring it up, lol. this is standard procedure for federal background checks here; literally everyone trying to get a cleared job has to do it. the form itself is open-source, the PDF is the top result on google, and I can send it to you so you can see exactly what they ask me to provide, if you’d like. I’m not going to ask you for more information than what you’ve given me, and they do take “I don’t know” as an answer. if it’s not okay with you at all, though, then we’ve got some major problems.

Tonight President Obama compared the public health care option to the public system of Universities and colleges. He said the public option will work the same way public colleges and Universities without inhibiting a vibrant system of private colleges and Universities. This is a fool's argument and a total apples to oranges comparison. Let me explain, first almost all private universities receive funding from the federal government. The federal government is not going to provide funding for private insurance. The second reason is it's common knowledge that the best Universities in the U.S. are private schools such as Duke, Stanford, and the Ivy League. These universities fill most of the highest paying jobs in the country. Some jobs even go as far as to require a degree from one of these schools (Stock Brokers on NYC Stock Exchange.) These highly paid graduates can donate larger amounts of money back to their respective colleges than the average Joe who graduated from a generic state funded university. No one is going to donate money to the private insurance companies. We can't even get all the people who qualify for insurance to sign up and that's the problem! Look, I have no way of knowing whether the public option will work or won't but when faulty logic is used to support it I become concerned. When most of the people supporting the public option are from California (a state where the middle class is few and far between) I become more concerned. When most of the Senators and Representatives who support the public option say they would prefer the U.S. had a single payer system (that's total government control of health care if you didn't know) I become very concerned. Crazy ass ToG7 theory

Disclaimer -  I am not a literature/folklore/history scholar. Nor am I Irish. Part of what follows comes from a ten minute internet search of non-academic sites. Anyone who can add to or correct the Irish mythology, place names, and geography, please let me know! The rest of it is just a long-winded, convoluted mess of a ToG ‘theory’. Listen. This is just for fun. I know this won’t actually happen in ToG7. The odds of me winning the lottery that I never play are better.

Let’s begin. (lol)

So, I’m sitting in on an intro to archaeology class this morning (for work, not as a student) and the professor shows part of a video about bog bodies in Ireland. One of the sites mentioned is Croghan Hill. This caught my attention because it sounded like they were pronouncing it the same way Crochan is pronounced in Throne of Glass.

Back in my office, I look up Croghan Hill and wikipedia tells me it’s in the village of... surprise Croghan (or Cruachán in Irish) in County Offaly, Ireland (Leinster Province).

Then I wondered how Cruachán is pronounced, and found this:

“Cruachán – "kruck-awn"/ "Krooakh-awn"/“kruh-hawn” , a sacred mountain in Roscommon, in province of Connacht, Western Ireland. Home to Queen Maeve and Ailill “

These are two different places. But I gave in and started down the wiki wormhole, which led me here - Rathcroghan (bolding is mine):

“...a complex of archaeological sites near Tulsk in County Roscommon, Ireland. It is identified as the site of Cruachan, the traditional capital of the Connachta, a term used to describe the prehistoric and early historic rulers of the western territory....

Now, all of this reminded me of a ridiculous, middle-of-the-night, not-even-half-formed theory I once threw at @propshophannah (sorry @itach-i you had no internet!) about how Maeve might have some serious shit in store for Manon and the witches because we’ve never been told explicitly what the deal is with Manon’s golden, valg-king eyes.

In CoM, I always felt like Baba Yellowlegs was acting weird in the scene with Celaena. She kind of kept looking into her mirrors instead of at Celaena, acting like someone else was listening. Which is possible with witch mirrors since they could be used for communication over long distances. This is pure conjecture on my part.

In HoF, we’re told gold eyes are cherished by the Blackbeaks (but not the other clans apparently???) and Manon has never asked why. It’s implied she is the first to have pure, gold eyes. Manon can sense something off about the valg-possessed though at this point I don’t think she knows what’s wrong.

Also in HoF, when Manon meets the Stygian spiders, the spider says:

“‘Sister,’ the spider mused. ‘I suppose we are sisters, you and I. Two faces of the same dark coin, from the same dark maker. Sisters in spirit if not in flesh.’“

We’re told in this scene that Bluebloods used to worship the spiders.

In QoS, we learn Manon’s eyes are feared by the lesser valg (Erawan never seems to flinch from her though so???). Witches with any amount of gold color in their eyes are able to repel the torture visions valg-Roland uses on them. And of course, she pushed back the valg in Dorian simply by looking at him.

In EoS, Maeve tells Manon she knows her face, most likely because Maeve probably knew or had seen Rhiannon, who Manon looks like.

In ToD, we learn that the spiders, from both continents, are really valg foot soldiers serving valg queen Maeve, who presumably is possessing a fae body (though this last part is not confirmed).

Now, I’m not saying Maeve saw future Manon in her original prophecy about Aelin and deliberately created the witches by forcing some of her valg followers and fae to mate. I’m not saying she made witches to serve as her protectors (like the spiders) against the valg, giving them the ability to sense valg possession in others and an eye color that would repel/protect against lesser valg. Just like I’m not saying the matrons know this and have been working for her and not Erawan this whole time (using witch mirrors to contact her and building a giant weaponized mirror they could turn on Erawan if Maeve told them to).

I’m not saying Manon’s eyes are really the eyes of a valg queen instead of a valg king.

And I’m definitely not saying Maeve has plans to use Manon as a vessel for her valg queen form...

But... yeah.

After all that I don’t know where the Crochans fit into this LOL! Maybe they rebelled against Maeve and that’s what the Witch Wars were really about? Also, in terms of this theory, I have no clue why the Blackbeak Matron would have gone along with Erawan’s fucked up “experiments”. Other than she’s just pure evil. Which I think we can all agree on!

CHAPTER 1

“I guess it’s time to finish off the planning for the charity opening day” I said to myself as I walked into my home office. I worked as an coordinator of a charity called ‘Bright Lights, Big City’. We had many departments from helping the less fortunate and going through hard times to rebuilding homes destroyed by natural disasters. That was my department among a few more. I had organised all of the volunteers and how they were all getting there and a sponsor, we needed them . I had reached out to many celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, John Mayer and even Prince Harry from England, worth a shot but hadn’t yet received a reply. I mean in past projects we’ve had Demi Lovato, Liam Hemsworth and Ed Sheeran. 

  We’d had a few celebrities to help sponsor us and bring in extra helpers because of the 'celebrity endorsement’, so to speak, we were using them, but for a good cause. I sat at my very tidy desk and logged into my email. It was taking it’s time to load so I turned around to plug my phone into the tower speaker to play some music. The first song was House of the rising sun by the animals. Just as the song was ending my emails had loaded, 17 new emails. I went through every one of them. Most were about the deliveries for the construction materials. As I replied to each email Kings and Queens started blaring through my speakers. Singing along I checked the second to last email. 

Subject: Bright Lights, Big City Sponsor. Oh my god this was it, 2 weeks before we are supposed to start and we have a sponsor, thank goodness. So I scrolled down to read the email. I took my vape pen with me so I could take a few puffs to help calm me down, the adrenaline was still coursing through my veins as I sat there and thought about what was happening. I watched my dogs roam around the dimly lit yard. I had a great dane rescue who I named blue as his color was blue and I had Tank my Husky rescue, I called him tank because he was a stocky thing that would knock anything over in his path and there was Nellie the Chihuahua mix, she was my first dog, small but feisty, definitely the leader of the pack. The boys needed to be re homed together and people usually don’t want 2 big dogs, well puppies. They were only 8 months old but had been together since 5 weeks as the person who gave them to the rescue bought them way too early and didn’t want them once they both teamed up and destroyed the house. Once they were at the rescue they were trained to not ruin furniture and trained to be fairly good dogs. I mean they’re still puppies so I’m  a little lenient with them. But I’d never change them in any way, they are my babies, I’ll be it big babies, but babies none the less. I called them inside and locked the doors. I was on the computer for so long that it had passed dinner time so I didn’t bother. I went upstairs to have a shower, then laid in bed after. I couldn’t sleep, I was thinking about all the things I needed to get ready. I was going through my mental check list in my head. I had the materials. ✔️ the storage for materials. ✔️ the sponsor. ✔️ the meeting room. ✔️ the transport. ✔️ the volunteers. ✔️ the blueprints. ✔️ the tools. ✔️ As I was going through them ticking more and more off I started to feel better and more prepared. Checking things off my list was like counting sheep and before I knew it I was asleep.  The next two weeks flew by what with all the preparing I was doing. I had finished my presentation and a speech for the first day and was now packing it all into my bag ready for tomorrow. The office of thirty seconds to mars and I had been emailing back and forth. For a sponsor they sure wanted to know every detail of my plan, which was a little intimidating because our other sponsors had never wanted such detailed descriptions of what was going on, but it was fine. I felt pretty organised. That night my bag with my laptop, paperwork and handouts were by the door. I was showered and had my outfit picked out for tomorrow which was fairly business-ey. I was in bed reading over the final plans for tomorrow. Once the clock hit 10 pm I decided to go to sleep.   *beep beep beep beep beep* “Uggghh” I sighed to myself. I rolled over to see that it was 6 am. I slammed my hand down on the alarm and scrambled out of bed and went straight to the bathroom to go to the toilet and wash my face. After I made breakfast for myself and the dogs and sat at the table. I let the dogs out while I got dressed.

I’ll admit this outfit was not suitable for a construction site but I’ve done this enough times to know I can climb a ladder in heels and a skirt if needed.  I fixed my hair, let the dogs back in and got ready to leave. I grabbed my bag and car keys had a last check in the mirror. I closed the door took a deep breath and tried to think positively. I arrived at the meeting place where everyone would be arriving in about half an hour. Plenty of time for me to get hooked up to the projector. Luckily they had already set the chairs out for me. About 150. Staring at the empty chairs made me feel slightly nervous, but I can do this. About 10 minutes before everyone would be arriving on the buses I heard a commotion outside so decided to investigate. I went to the front desk and asked what was going on. “Well Miss, it’s some band, they’ve come to see you”. I stared at the man with wide eyes. “Me? What’s the bands name?” I ask him. “Thirty something something, at least I think that what they were screaming outside” he replied. 'Oh god’ I thought to myself. I went back to my meeting room to wait for them and to try and calm myself. I gave it a couple of minutes and there they were. Well two thirds of them. Shannon and Jared walked towards me. “Hi, I’m Jared ad this is Shannon are you the coordinator of the Bright lights, big city organisation” Jared held out a hand for me to shake. “Hi yes I am. I’m Y/N/&/Y/L/N. Do forgive me but may I ask why you’re here?” I didn’t want to sound rude but sponsors don’t usually show up until we’ve finished all the work and we have the little celebration party at the end. “Well my brother thought it would be a great idea if we came along to find out whats going to happen and if we could help in any way” Shannon answered not looking too happy. “You don’t look like the type of girl who does this very often. You’re dressed to girly. Who’s actually in charge of the building here?” he added. “Well actually I have been coordinator of about 30 very successful projects and I am in charge, thank you very much” I defended myself. People started coming off of the buses and into the venue. The two men went to the back of the room and took seats. I turned around and tried to gather my thoughts. I wondered why Shannon was annoyed with me already. Was it the way I was dressed. Did I do something to piss him off. I cant loose the sponsors already. I shook the negative thoughts out of my head and turned back around to see the room full of people. “If we’re all ready and seated I’d like to get started” I announced with a smile. “I’d like to thank each and every one of you for volunteering and agreeing to help with this project. As you know” I flip to the first slid. “The area we will be working on was affected by a very big storm that passed through. It has taken over 200 homes and we are all here to help build them back up so I hope you’re good with tools” I gained a little laugh. I looked over to Jared and Shannon. Jared was listening to my every word and Shannon was busy on his pone looking more and more annoyed. I was just hoping it wasn’t at me. I carried on with the presentation and at the end I introduced out sponsors. It lasted around 45 minutes. I sent everyone for a coffee break then we’d get onto the buses so I could show everyone the location and where we’d be starting tomorrow.
