Straw Bear Tuesday

On the Tuesday after 6th January (yesterday in 2024), the people of the Fens found yet another excuse to avoid going back to work after Christmas by inventing Straw Bear Tuesday on the day after Plough Monday. On this day, a man covered entirely in straw, and with a conical sheaf covering his head, would walk the streets, dancing and capering for the amusement of passers by. The event was started as a thankyou to townsfolk for their donations the previous day, but over the years took on the characteristics of a pub crawl. The “bear” of course did not resemble a real bear at all. Some have suggested the antics were a parody of actual bear-baiting, but the straw covering hints at an older origin: “straw men” were often surrogate victims recalling ancient human sacrifice.

The Straw Bear procession has been revived in Whittlesea in Cambridgeshire as part of a folk festival that takes place in the area in the second week of January.
