Black Lives Matter: the apartheid of today

The anti-discrimination protest flared up after the American police shot a number of black, mostly unarmed kids. A lot of the officers said they felt threatened by the kids. Some of the officers used the excuse that they thought that the kid was reaching for a weapon. Some of the shootings were filmed by bystanders. The videos showed that the reactions of the cops were jumpy and not at all correct. These shootings reached the news and mostly the black population of the United States saw that these cases of “self-defence” were no coincidence and sure as hell were no “self-defence”. All this anger, incomprehension and sadness resulted in the uniting of thousands of black people marching and demonstrating in the streets of the cities where the shootings took place. Often, the passions ran high during the Black Lives Matter demonstrations and caused riots in Ferguson, the hometown of Michael Brown, one of the racist shooting victims.

All Lives Matter Maybe the literal meaning of the slogan “Black Lives Matter” is shocking for some people, but if the slogan is being put in even the slightest bit of perspective and the current situation I hope everybody can see that the real meaning of “Black Lives Matter” is a cry for equality and the end of racism. Some people do not see this and feel discriminated and set behind by the Black Lives Matter Movement. These people are mostly not classified as African-American. This group of mostly non-black people felt they had to unite in a movement called All Lives Matter. Arguments that are often used by the members of the All Lives Matter movement are: “not only black lives matter, our lives matter as well” and “why do they want special treatment?”.

These “arguments” alone show exactly why the Black Lives Matter movement is so important and should be heard worldwide, because they prove that the discrimination of black people is a “normal” thing in today’s world. They show that our society is soaked with inequality and that a lot of non-black people don’t even notice it anymore. The supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement don’t want special treatment; they want THE SAME treatment as anyone else. They don’t only value the lives of black people, they just wish that the rest of the world also valued the lives of black people as much as their own. The problem is that the people that support All Lives Matter followers cannot imagine what it is like to be put behind and get treated differently from the day that they are born. All Lives SHOULD matter, but apparently they don’t. Why start a movement that overshadows the voice of a group of people that really want and need to finally be heard? 

Colour blind To me, this form of current apartheid is bizarre. I cannot understand how humans consisting of the same flesh and blood as the rest of de world population get treated differently because of the colour of their skin. We claim to be live in a “civilized” world and that humans are the “intelligent and superior race”. In my opinion, civilized is depending on the following aspects:

·       Discrimination in any form is not acceptable;

·       Everyone should be treated equally and have the same rights and privileges;

·       Everyone that feels like they are treated differently must be heard by the government and the public. 

If we take these points into consideration, I can conclude that we are currently not civilized at all. For example: the number of black people who are incarcerated has never been this high.

 Some sources even state that the wealth gap between white and black folks is bigger than it was in South Africa during the apartheid. Could it be that this apartheid, which we all thought we had learned and recovered from, has really never left and is only striking back harder every day?

If a number of deadly and unnecessary shootings of unarmed black kids were needed to put the issue of unequal treatment by the police on the political agenda, this world is not colour blind, but totally blinded on both eyes. Probably by its own ignorance. Is this really what Rosa Parks fought for? What Martin Luther King fought for? What numerous of black people targeted by racism still fight for everyday?
