Growing Pink Hibiscus Plants in Sydney: A Guide to Beautiful Tropical Blooms
Pink hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) is a stunning addition to any garden, bringing a tropical charm with its large, vibrant flowers and lush green foliage. In Sydney’s warm climate, pink hibiscus thrives, offering striking color throughout much of the year. This guide provides essential tips for successfully growing pink hibiscus plants in Sydney, ensuring your garden bursts with these eye-catching blooms.
Why Choose Pink Hibiscus for Your Sydney Garden?
The Hibiscus Pink plant in Sydney is known for its showy, trumpet-shaped flowers that can reach up to 15 cm in diameter. With shades ranging from pale pink to deep rose, these flowers add elegance and brightness to garden landscapes, borders, or patio containers. Their ability to bloom for most of the year in Sydney’s temperate climate makes them a popular choice among both beginner and seasoned gardeners. Additionally, hibiscus plants attract butterflies and birds, making your garden more lively and inviting.
Best Time to Plant Pink Hibiscus in Sydney
The best time to plant pink hibiscus in Sydney is during the spring or early summer, from September to November. This allows the plant to establish strong roots before the heat of summer and take full advantage of the growing season. You can also plant in early autumn, but spring is ideal for promoting maximum growth and blooming potential.
Planting Pink Hibiscus
Choose a location in your garden that receives full sun for at least 6 hours a day, as hibiscus plants love sunlight and perform best in bright conditions. The soil should be well-draining, as hibiscus does not tolerate waterlogged soil. Incorporate organic matter like compost into the soil to ensure proper nutrition.
When planting, dig a hole twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball of the plant. Place the hibiscus in the hole and backfill with soil, pressing down gently to eliminate air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly after planting to help it settle into its new home.
Caring for Pink Hibiscus
Caring for pink hibiscus is relatively easy, but there are a few key things to keep in mind:
Watering: Hibiscus plants need regular watering, especially during hot weather. Water deeply once or twice a week, making sure the soil stays evenly moist but not waterlogged.
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season to promote lush growth and abundant flowers. A fertilizer high in potassium can help encourage more vibrant blooms.
Pruning: Prune hibiscus in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the plant. Regular pruning also encourages more vigorous growth and flowering.
Pests and Diseases
Hibiscus plants can be susceptible to pests such as aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies. Regularly check your plant for signs of infestation and treat it with organic insecticides like neem oil or insecticidal soap. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
Conclusion
Growing pink hibiscus in Sydney is a rewarding and enjoyable experience, as these plants add vibrant color and tropical beauty to any garden. With their long blooming season, ease of care, and stunning flowers, pink hibiscus is a perfect choice for anyone looking to enhance their outdoor space. By following the planting and care tips in this guide, you can enjoy the beauty of pink hibiscus year after year, creating a lush and colorful garden oasis.

melting fire
Bela had never been so hot before.
Delirious and fever-stricken, she squirmed on her bed, desperately trying to escape the burning heat inside of her. It was like she was laying in the hot sand of a desert, slowly being fried by the sun that wasn’t there. Because she was in her bedroom, shrouded by dim shadows, and the only light was coming from a singular gas lamp on her desk, flickering faint yellow-gold across the floor. But it was so hot, the blankets like plains of fire on her skin, doing little to bring her any comfort.
A soft moan managed to escape Bela’s flaking lips. Her mouth was dry, tongue like burnt coals. She desperately needed water--not even blood, but nice, cold water--but she couldn’t get up. She could barely even move aside from her twisting and turning in a vain attempt to get comfortable.
Her breath came out thin, reedy, and too-hot. She thought she could spout flames, maybe. She had to be burning alive.
There was a squeak as her bedroom door creaked open. She pried open her heavy eyelids to see two silhouettes creeping towards her bed. She instinctively bared her teeth and spat at the trespassers, too weak to raise her claws to defend herself.
“Someone is cranky,” teased a voice.
Wait-- she knew that voice.
Bela settled as her sisters perched on the edge of the bed.
“Sorry,” she rasped, her voice weak and hoarse from illness. “I’m kinda delirious.”
“Kinda?” Cassandra raised an amused eyebrow. “Do you know what you were doing before you passed out earlier?”
“Do I want to know?” Bela asked nervously.
Daniela helpfully supplied her with details: “You were all wobbly and Mother set a hand on your shoulder and said it was to keep you from falling. Your response was, ‘It’s okay, five-second rule.’”
Bela’s face flushed red--redder than it already was than her fever. “Oh--”
Daniela didn’t relent: “And then you started stroking Mother’s arm hair and said, ‘You’d make such a good carpet.’”
“Okay, that’s enou--”
“You also said, ‘my bones feel wet, may I have a napkin?’”
“Daniela--”
“Oh, and we can’t forget, while at breakfast and you were still trying to act like you were okay: ‘Coffee doesn’t taste like coffee, but it sure does taste like brown.’”
“Okay, okay!” Bela yelped, then coughed into her blankets. “I get it. I was out of it.”
“Very out of it,” Cassandra said, stroking her claws through Bela’s sweaty hair. Bela, rationalizing that she couldn’t get any more embarrassed than she already was, leaned her head into her sister’s touch, letting out a soft purr of contentment. Cassandra’s talons were nimble and uncharacteristically gentle against her burning scalp.
“Where is Mother?” Bela asked.
“Aww, are we not good enough company for you, Beli?” Daniela teased playfully.
“I didn’t say that!” Bela squeaked. She hunched her shoulders in. “I was just wondering.”
“Somewhere around here,” Cassandra said vaguely. “She’ll probably come to check on you soon.”
Bela nodded sluggishly. Her head was beginning to fill with fog again. “Alright…” she murmured.
“Aww,” Daniela cooed. “She’s getting all silly again.” She reached out and lightly dragged her claws down one of Bela’s clammy cheeks, probably thinking she was being comforting, when really her touch was just ticklish.
Bela bared her teeth at her, though she barely opened her eyes. “Shut it.”
Daniela tittered.
“Well, we’ll let you rest,” Cassandra said, tugging on Daniela’s arm.
“Sleep well!” Daniela said as she was pulled out of the room.
“Thanks,” Bela replied.
The door shut and she was left in darkness once again.
Bela rolled onto her side and curled up in her blankets. A moment later, she rolled onto her other side, but it did little to help her discomfort. Her body was aching all over and no position was good enough.
Outside, the wind was howling. Another snowstorm was blowing in, loud and powerful. She turned over again to watch the snowfall. The snowflakes flew like dozens of little whiteflies behind the glass, twisting and twirling through the air. It made her think of her own flies, and she broke off a piece of her skin into a cluster of insects. She was desperately lonely and wanted something to interact with since she didn’t have her sisters or mother there with her.
With blurry eyes, Bela watched dazedly as her insects flew around her head. She held out a finger and they lined up on it in a perfect arrangement: blowfly, flesh fly, dogbane beetle, Spanish fly, black vine weevil, drain fly, green bottle fly, clothes moth, click beetle, room spinning, ears ringing, eyes shutting…
Bela’s head jerked back when she began to nod off, sending her bugs into a scattering cloud of frantic wingbeats. She blinked her eyes furiously, but it did little to dispel the fuzziness over everything. It was like she was looking underwater. She rubbed her heavy eyelids, and moving her arms was like trying to move solid beams of lead.
Her fever flared. She moaned weakly in pain.
Her skin was baking, boiling right off of her bones. Her limbs were sacks of heated stones and smoldering embers that she had to drag around with her, and her ears simply felt like they were lit on fire. Her cheeks felt like someone was holding hot iron to the sides of her face and wouldn’t let go, no matter how loud she screamed.
To put it simply, she was like a roasted lamb on a spit, rotating slowly above hungry flames. Sometimes, she had fallen into their orange-gold mouths. She could almost feel the flaming tongues licking at her skin…
Bela squirmed, whining faintly. She couldn’t handle this. She couldn’t take this heat. She used to think the cold was bad, but this-- this was just awful.
She had to escape it.
As though beckoning her, the blizzard howled.
Bela raised her head--which was rather difficult, as it felt like it weighed a ton--and squinted. The snow usually wasn’t very enticing, but something about it now seemed to call to her. It was inviting her to join its cool embrace, promising to soothe her raging fever. She had to oblige to it.
Sliding out of bed, Bela staggered towards the window. The glass was cool against her palms when she pressed her hands to it, but felt even better on her burning forehead. She let out a sigh of relief as the chill invaded her, but it wasn’t good enough. She needed more. She needed to be rid of this fire inside of her.
Bela pushed against the window. It didn’t budge. She whined and pushed harder. It still didn’t budge. Mother kept them locked for good reason, but Bela needed to get out now. She felt like she was being cremated and didn’t know how much longer she could handle it.
Finally, after a few moments of desperate struggling, the window relented under her assault and she was embraced by the soothing cold. It didn’t hurt as much as she thought it would. It felt…nice.
Letting out a sigh of relief, Bela relaxed her body and shut her eyes to rest.
--- --- ---
Alcina was alerted by the sound of glass shattering. She had been idly flipping through a book when she heard the horrendous smashing sound. Instantly, she snapped to her feet and began striding down the hallway until she got to Bela’s room. Upon opening the door, she was greeted by a blast of cold air, which was as freezing as the black ice that suddenly sprinted through her veins.
“Bela?” Alcina shouted. Stepping inside, she noticed that the window was broken open and her eldest daughter was nowhere to be seen. “Bela?!”
Alcina rushed over to the crater created in the glass and looked out. Despite the darkness of the night, she could still distinctly make out the figure of Bela in the snow below.
She didn’t look like she was moving.
“Bela!!”
Alcina ran out of the room, where she was promptly met by her other two daughters. They both instantly leaped away from the doorway with yelps when the cold wind brushed against their legs. She quickly shut the door.
“Mother, what happened?” Cassandra asked.
“Stay here,” Alcina said instead of answering. She then turned and sprinted down the hallway and outside, nearly clipping her head on the doorframe.
When she found Bela, she may have been more concerned about her falling from the second-story window if it wasn’t for how leached her skin was. Her eldest daughter was icy to the touch, her skin as brittle as weak glass in the unforgiving cold. Alcina scooped her up into her arms, holding her close to her chest to protect her from the vicious lashing of the snowstorm as she carried her back inside.
Bela had been out there for less than three minutes, but Alcina’s mind was still running in panicked circles. Was it enough to kill Bela? Was her baby girl about to die in her arms? Alcina’s heart seized at the mere thought of losing one of her daughters. She frantically went over her own notes in her head: the flies generally began hibernating at temperatures below ten degrees Celsius, and it was definitely below ten degrees Celsius out there. When that happens, their metabolism drops and they go into a state of lethargy, which then causes extreme weakness and fatigue. There was also the pain and sensitivity that came from the cold, and though Bela didn’t seem like she was in freezing agony, Alcina still couldn’t be too sure.
It was then that Bela stirred, and Alcina snapped her head down. Bela was squirming in her arms, whining ever so faintly. She didn’t seem to be in pain, she just seemed distressed and very uncomfortable.
“Mother,” Bela panted. “Please--”
“It’s alright now, my love,” Alcina said, carrying Bela over to one of the many fireplaces in the castle, swiping up a blanket folded over a cushioned chair as she went. “It’s alright. I’ve got you.” She squeezed her daughter close to her chest, not quite realizing that she may have been smothering her. “It’s okay. Mother’s here now.”
“No-- no--” Bela tried to wiggle out of her grasp, but she was much too weak. “Hot-- too hot--”
Alcina frowned. She had been wondering how and why Bela got outside, but now it made sense.
Was her fever really that bad?
“You can’t be cold, darling,” Alcina said, crouching down in front of the fire, not releasing Bela from her vice. She wrapped her in the blanket, despite her wriggling. Under her touch, Bela's skin was still worryingly frigid and dry. She hoped the snow wouldn't leave blisters. “You must stay warm.”
“No--” Bela’s claws tugged feebly at Alcina’s dress. If it weren’t caused by illness, then it may have been cute. “Mother, please…”
Alcina sighed. She shifted Bela into one arm (it wasn’t exactly hard to do) and brushed her sweaty hair out of her face. Bela leaned into the touch, her eyelids fluttering shut. She purred faintly.
“You need to be warm,” Alcina told her. As hard as it was to resist her child’s begging, she couldn’t just go throw Bela out into the snow. She had to keep her near the fire, where her body could go back to its normal temperature.
Alcina cupped the back of Bela’s head and pressed her face into her neck, rocking her slowly. She should have kept a better eye on her. She should have been there, taking care of her. Now an awful chill had taken lodge in her precious daughter’s body and she was worried that it wasn’t going to come out.
“Mother?”
Alcina turned to see Cassandra and Daniela. They both looked simultaneously curious and worried.
“Is Bela okay?” Daniela asked.
“She will be,” Alcina answered, holding Bela closer until she was holding onto her like a baby koala bear. She was hoping her body heat would help dispel the ice inside of Bela’s own being. “Your sister thought it would be a good idea to break her window and go out into the snow.”
“I’m hot,” Bela whined. She quickly followed her words up with a purr as Alcina stroked her hair.
Daniela giggled. “Beli, I thought you were the smart one!”
“‘M gonna…turn you into a ceiling fan,” Bela growled without opening her eyes. “But…too tired… Maybe later…”
Daniela giggled again. Cassandra snorted into her hand. Even Alcina, despite her worry, couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Darlings, can you get a wet rag for me?” Alcina asked her other two daughters.
Bela chuffed against her neck.
“A moderately cold one. But not too cold. Just slightly below lukewarm. Please.”
Cassandra and Daniela both nodded and raced off to retrieve the item before the other.
Slowly, the cold was draining from Bela’s body, chased away by the tag-team effort of the fire and Alcina’s body heat. Her fever, however, quickly became apparent once again, searing right through the back of her gown and into Alcina’s hand while she rubbed up and down her spine. No wonder she had broken a window just to get outside; she was burning up.
“I’m sorry for not keeping a better eye on you,” Alcina said, shifting her daughter in her arms. “I should have been watching you to make sure this never happened. Though, I never expected you to break a window…”
“Not your fault,” Bela said, her breath hot against Alcina’s neck. “I was being stupid.”
Alcina leaned her back slightly, cupping the back of her head with one hand. “Are you slightly more awake now?”
“A little,” Bela said, her eyes glassy and half-lidded. “Feel like I’m on fire, though…”
Alcina frowned and tucked Bela back against her. She worriedly ran her fingers through Bela’s hair, which was damp with a mix of sweat and melted snow.
“I’m sorry I can’t do more for you, my darling,” Alcina said. “Damn, why did you and your sisters have to be weak to the cold? I would run you an ice bath if that didn’t put you at the risk of--” She didn’t finish that sentence. She shook her head. “Why flies? Why something that can’t survive in the cold? Why not something like-- like-- like birds!”
“Better than being hurt by heat,” Bela pointed out. “Then the fever probably would have killed me already.”
Alcina winced. “I suppose you’re right.”
“‘Course I am. ‘M the smart one.”
That got a small chuckle out of Alcina. “Your hubris is showing, darling.”
“No, yours is,” Bela mumbled, drifting off into a feverish, half-awake daze of slurring and purring.
Despite her remaining worry, Alcina couldn’t help but chuckle once again. She rocked Bela slowly until Cassandra and Daniela returned with the rag, Daniela being the one to present it to her. She thanked them, then shifted Bela in her arms so she could wipe her face down with it. Bela shuddered at the cold water on her heated skin, but let out a soft coo of pleasure.
“Thank you,” Bela whispered, cracking open her eyes slightly.
Alcina gave her a tender smile. “You’re welcome. Now, rest, my sweet girl. I will watch over you until you feel better.”
Afterward, she would make arrangements to strengthen the windows.

"Whiteflies."
Numb.
That's all there is.
An overwhelming feeling of numbness, one that feels like it's slowly but surely chipping away at the very being of your soul.
A brain that stopped doing its job a while ago, now he can barely remember what happened merely hours ago.
A hollowness, one that feels heavy on your chest and if you stop paying attention, it might fight back. Making you feel as though you can hardly breathe.
Sometimes the thought passes by,
"What if I let it win?"
Of course, he doesn't dig deeper. Merely a thought in passing.
But this thought clings to him like whiteflies to a leaf.
Why won't the whiteflies go away?
Going about his daily life he stands in crowds feeling like he has no place. The feeling only gets heavier. He has no release for his anger, the sadness, the fear. It all builds up until… he feels nothing. Like all that he once stood for just disappeared. He lost his woes and his meaning. Just like he lost his mind.
Waiting at the subway he stands closest to the tracks. Humouring the idea, he tests the possibilities. Staring at the workers, the middle class and the high end mingle together, it's obvious as to who belongs where.
But at the end of the day, everyone wishes they could melt away.
He throws his thoughts to the side, they are lonely in numbers, seemingly so easy to brush aside and forget by the day's end.
But it's never so easy.
Yet he settles with the weary ache in his marrow. Passing each day as not content yet not wanting, a vicious cycle. It's exhausting day by day.
Yet he never sought out the end. Simply being congenial to the idea, never putting it through action. But if it ever happened, he wouldn't be opposed.
In time, the burden of the whiteflies grows to be untenable, and the leaf will fall from the stem.
Some days, he steps a little further over the line.
Why won't the whiteflies go away?
Laying in his barren room he stares at the ceiling. It's dark. Cold. But he didn't complain.
His head was empty, all of its sustenance was gone.
There he lay.
Thoughtless.
Like a blood sniffing shark.
The whirring of the fan was the only thing reminding him he was alive. Barely feeling his own heart beat.
Sometimes he felt as if his heart was going up his throat, other times it was too faint. Yet never in between.
But the latter was most of his days
He feels like a walking corpse. The other person in the house was just as quiet as him. So there was no one to jog himself back to reality.
Why won't the whiteflies go away?
I've tried so hard now, I've tried everything…
Why won't the whiteflies go?
What else do I need to do?
What else do I need to give it?
Why won't the whiteflies go away?
He stands in the kitchen, mindlessly wandering for something to do, a task to hide from his thoughts.
Seeing a pile of dishes he decides to clean them.
.Running the hot water under his hands made them hurt, but he dismissed the feeling quickly. Picking the dishes one by one he cleans them, slowly. Taking his time. Then he picks up a knife.
The whiteflies double in size.
He stares at it, it shines under the light, so prettily does it shine.
He wonders…
How would it feel on his skin?
He drags the tip of his finger over the blade edge, slowly, it cuts him.
Looking at the blood on his finger he wonders again.
What if this was somewhere else? Would it hurt more?
Ultimately he decides to put it up to his neck, pressing lightly, not breaking the skin.
But what if he does? He certainly isn't against the idea. Not one bit.
He presses harder, and the blood drops, not a lot, but it runs down his neck. Now what if he goes further…
A hand grabs his wrist aggressively, he lowers the knife. Looking at the hasty eyes that face his own.
"What are you doing…?"
The voice shaked, obviously distraught. His face stayed the same,a deadpan that looked straight past.
"Why are you doing this!"
The voice yelled. It hurt his ears.
"Answer me!"
The running water was the only noise in the house. The two stared at each other. One with tears welling in their eyes and the other with a blank stare.
Should he be feeling something?
"Pen… please…"
Bright green eyes and blond hair. His father.
Never in his life would he imagine his father crying in front of him. Sober at least.
Something about this fact struck a chord with him. Tears suddenly begin falling yet his face doesn't say the same. He falls to his knees, he feels as if he can breathe again. The hollowness isn't gone but it's lighter. Much lighter.
The man in front of him crouches down as well, as if he were comforting him. Desperately he clings to his father, like a whitefly.
His touch was so wanting yet gentle, he didn't know if he deserved the comfort he wanted.
His father hugs him, gently, as a mother would.
The whiteflies lowered in number.
As the two stayed in silent sobs, they both felt an odd comfort.
Did they deserve to be this close? They couldn't answer. But for now, all they needed was to stay in that moment.
And soon the whiteflies left.
While the leaf was wilting, new life would spring again.
He held onto that fact, it gave him hope.
Quietly, he starts to believe.

YOUR HERO [dekuxreader]
pairing: midoriya izuku [deku] x reader
genre: fluff, romantic, lemon (maybe?), action
word count: 3.5+ words
part 1/? <previous next >
warnings: none for this chapter
author’s note: As usual, this is a translation of my original work. So excuse me in advance if there will be any mistakes, I will try in every way not to make them.
with this work I wanted to create a sort of "mini-series". The chapters will therefore be real "episodes" concerning the establishment of the love story between the reader and deku.
The story is set after the manga, so all the characters are roughly 23-24 years old.
This is because in future chapters things will get spicy and then because WE TALK ABOUT DEKU ADULT. COME ON. REALLY. LOOK AT HIM. --> As a reference I am taking my own design, but feel free to imagine Deku as you prefer!
I hope you appreciate the idea and the work behind it.
◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇
"Oh! Sorry! Sorry!" you shouted, getting out of the train as soon as the doors opened. "Sorry! My fault!" you kept repeating, trying to avoid the crowd of people who had gathered in front of the platform.
Despite your best efforts, your shoulder hit several unfortunate passers-by too slow to move several times.
"Miss! Be careful! "
"Forgive me!" you hastened to say, joining the palms in front of the face without stopping.
Many bowed their heads, watching you zigzag from side to side of the sidewalk, looking desperately at the fine watch tied around your wrist.
I haven't heard the alarm clock, and now Asu-chan will kill me.
A sigh left your lips.
It was your first day free from ... well ... what seemed like life and you promised your best friend to see you, after postponing the latest releases because too tired to even think about going out.
And of course, that morning, still sleepy, you had turned off the alarm clock completely forgetting about the commitment.
The bed was so... comfortable.
You hit another distinguished man, making him drop the briefcase and scatter the contents on the asphalt. He began to rail in a loud voice, waving a punch in the air, entirely deaf for the excuses you were shouting, walking away.
Yes... much more comfortable.
But there was little point in basking in the warm and welcoming memory of the duvet against the skin. A promise was a promise.
The heel hit harder on the floor when you increased the pace, climbing the steps of the station two by two to gain time.
Asuka had given you an appointment at the entrance of FootTown, one of the most famous towers in the city, so you could have lunch together and take a tour of the Observatory in the early afternoon, and end the day for shopping in the nearby shopping district.
It was a life that you didn't spend time for yourself between work and housework. When you left college, you realized how many hours there were actually in one day.
"Ohiiiii!" you looked up, and finally, above the heads of the crowd, a hand was waving in the air calling for you. "I'm here !!!" a girl of about the same age with short teal-green hair shouted louder in your direction.
She stood on her toes, gesturing for you to come closer.
"Asu-chan !!! Forgive me," you cried desperately, overcoming the last group of people between you and your friend.
Arriving in front of Asuka, the air had now left your lungs. You leaned over yourself, keeping your hand pressed against the spleen that had started to ache.
By now, you were entirely out of practice, and having abandoned the gym membership in some drawer, perhaps it had been a wrong decision. With your head lowered, you caught the slight impatient beat of Asuka's pearly dancers on the floor.
"The appointment was half an hour ago!" your friend's voice echoed over you, hitting you where it hurt most.
Involuntarily, the head recessed more deeply between the shoulders. She had every reason in the world to be angry.
You nodded, tightening your eyelids, your head still bent as you caught your breath. You didn't know if you would find the courage to face her.
"I overslept," the cheeks caught fire, saying those words, "Excuse me..." only then, you dared to look up at the girl's face.
Asuka's pout softened. The scales around her eyes and cheeks shone with a thousand pink hues, making her resemble a mermaid when the sun reflected against them.
She did not notice your astonished gaze when her hands ran around your arm, pulling you to your feet by force.
"Aw! Asu-chan!" you grumbled, wiggling weakly when your feet almost tripped over each other.
She tightened her grip on your elbow, dragging you to the entrance "Up! Here we go! We have a lot of time to recover."
◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇
"So I told her what she could do with her nasty opinion!" Asuka's voice rang through the entire Observatory, causing some of the patrons to turn around.
But you were too busy laughing, trying to hide behind the back of your hand, to worry about who you were grabbing attention. You had missed all this. Laughing and joking without worrying about others.
It was like being a teenager again when the world was still full of promises.
Despite different commitments, you and Asuka had remained close friends from high school. Then there your path was divided, she had chased her dream of breaking through as a TV presenter while you, well, searching for your place in the world.
In a society of people with meta-abilities and superpowers, the real challenge was not to have any Quirks.
By now, the world population without power was below the 5% threshold and decreasing each new generation. Within twenty or thirty years, the birth of a child without a Quirk would have been a unique event.
They had become real whiteflies. It was as if the world wanted to remind you of how unique and singular this condition was.
The life of a Quirk-free was not easy. From an early age, in most cases, it was bullied as if having to struggle with the awareness of being different was not a considerable challenge at just four or five years.
Furthermore, everything in today's society was built to fit Quirk owners.
A simple example was shoes.
Anyone with powers had a mutation of the last toe, where for its complete superficiality, the joint had disappeared. In people without skills, this small feature was still present, made it extremely uncomfortable for them to wear shoes for "normal" people and with Quirk.
The last time you had to buy shoes, you passed a month before finding a pair that didn't make you tear in pain with every step.
And they were just shoes.
Having to compete with other students at school - all genetically better than you for one reason or another -, or finding a job in which being without Quirk was not considered a disabling handicap was a real feat.
In practice, you had to conquer your place in the world laboriously.
Although fortunately, there were people like Asuka or Ms. Mizuki, your employer, who cared little if you had a Quirk or not.
You drank from the straw a sip of the Bubble Tea ordered at one of the shops on the lower floor while Asuka took you by the hand, dragging you to another corner of the Observatory, telling another gossip about her internship with the TV station.
"Besides, you won't believe it, but what she's wearing are tons of foundation ... or rather ... quick-setting concrete," she joked, making a playful tongue, and you burst out laughing.
The Bubble Tea went almost sideways, risking to get out of your nostrils. "Please! Stop that!" you prayed, trying to push back the tears at the corners of the eyes if, for too much laughter or the burning up your nose, you don't know. "You should be more patient with your superiors ..."
Asuka shrugged, resting her elbows on the railing of the parapet "To hell with it! They make my life hell! At least I get my revenge" you looked at her, but there was no trace of hatred in her voice or resentment in her big blue eyes. The ghost of a smile hung over her purple lips.
You folded the corners of your lips back, fiddling with the plastic straw. "But you're happy, aren't you Asu-chan?" you murmured thoughtfully, continuing to watch the small rubbery tapioca balls floating in the liquid between your hands.
Asuka turned to you, blinking, "Uh?"
You woke up as if caught thinking about something you shouldn't have, and you absentmindedly waved a hand in front of your face, embarrassed "Don't mind! I was thinking aloud ..." you apologized as you sat upon the railing.
The icy metal against your thighs made you shiver, but the sun against your cheeks was warm and pleasant, like the light breeze that had started to mess up your hair.
It was a lovely day.
Asuka stared at you with a sly smile, resting her mind against the palm of her hand. "And you? Can't you tell me anything new?"
You raised your eyes to the sky, drinking, thoughtful "Mmh ... no, I would say no" you mumbled, sipping from the glass again.
But Asuka was not happy with the answer, "Look, you don't trick me!" she shouted, pointing at you, narrowing her eyelids with long white eyelashes "Do you want to tell me that you haven't met anyone interesting while working at the shop?!"
You looked at her from under your eyelashes, suspicious, "I don't like where this is going..."
Asuka puffed up her cheeks. "Yes, yes! There are always a lot of people there! Do you want to tell me that there was nobody who caught your attention? Not a little bit?"
You shook your head "No" you said merely looking up to the sky "I'm fine right now and I have no intention of going looking for someone or despairing about it" you explained calmly, shrugging your shoulders "but if I ever meet someone who will awaken my interest enough to convince me to take risks and get involved, well... you will be the first to know "you promised her with a smile.
"I hope so for you ..."
A roar swallowed Asuka's words.
"Uh? What is happening?" asked a man beside you, leaning over the railing in the direction of the noise.
In the angle you were in, you couldn't see anything—only a lonely cloud of gray dust stretch between the buildings, not far from you.
Another roar reverberated in the air. This time closer.
"A collapse?" someone behind you ventured.
A third rumble shook the air. This time so close that your stomach turns.
"Asu-ch—" you shouted, turning to your friend, but she didn't hear you over the screams of the other people around you when the floor of the Observatory began to tremble under your feet.
You let go of the Bubble Tea, whose glass fell into the void behind you, disappearing between the buildings below. Your hands ran to the railing, holding on with all your might so as not to be thrown back by the jolts.
Asuka instinctively grabbed you by the arms, hugging you with a scream, trying to push you towards her, tearing you from a fall of thirty floors.
"Do not give up! I beg you! Do not give up!" she prayed to you with tears in her eyes. Her voice always so calm now twisted in a desperate scream, "Hold on! Please!" she repeated, grabbing you with more force under your shoulders when a more violent shock struck the whole building. Her grip was so firm that you were sure that her fingers would leave bruises on your skin for days.
The screams sharpened.
You couldn't even hear your thoughts.
By now, the only thing you could do was close your eyes and pray that everything went well. And when your body fell forward, against Asuka's, you didn't even realize it.
Around you, people flocked to the exit. There was a crowd around the emergency stairs and the elevator entrance. People shouted and squirmed.
Someone was pushing to try to get there first. Someone else was crushed against the columns, trying to stay upright.
A shoe hit Asuka's temple, still flattened on the ground near you. She screamed, or it seemed so. You weren't sure. The only things that filled your ears were the screams and roars from below you.
"Let's leave!" not even your voice sounded like it came out of your mouth. But it was you who screamed it, because Asuka nodded, while a trickle of blood began to streak her cheek from under her hair.
Instinctively you looked for each other's hand and stood up against all expectations. Your knees were shaking like jellies, from fear, the constant shaking of the building, and perhaps even the adrenaline that was now pressing against the frontal bone of your brain.
The only thing you wanted was to get out of that hell.
With a shaky and uncertain step, you started to run towards one of the exits, where people still crowded, looking for an escape route.
Other people came behind you, crushing you from one side to the other. By now, you couldn't understand where you were anymore. The only thing you knew for sure was that you didn't leave Asuka's hand despite everything.
Her grasp was your only point of reference.
Another pair of hands grabbed you by the arm, pulling you back, you screamed trying to wiggle and escape that iron grip around your forearm at least until your face met that of a woman, her face pale and distraught, and her eyes red for tears.
"... I beg you! Have you seen my Sosuke?!" the woman's voice was cracked, hoarse, who knows how many times before she had repeated that.
You blinked, confused, without really hearing her words. But Asuka's hand was still there, desperately anchored to yours, and that was the bit of hope that helped you recover a bit of lucidity "... What...?" you repeated, confused.
The woman burst into tears "My child! Have you seen my child?!" she shouted grabbing the sleeve of your shirt tightly, the fabric tore as the woman shook her head in despair, but you didn't even notice "I lost sight of him just a moment ... a moment ..."
Yet another shock struck the Observatory.
"I ... I don't..." you instinctively started looking around, running out of words.
The woman screamed louder, "Please! He has an orange Ground Zero hat! he's... so young, please! "
The screams continued to crowd in your head, along with the bodies huddled around you. Your head was spinning, swirling.
Asuka shouted your name, giving your hand a more forceful tug, trying to drag you forward as a small crack opened between the bodies in front of her.
But you didn't move.
The grip of that desperate mother kept you there.
Amid that complete chaos, it was there that your eyes caught an orange dot in the distance.
At first, its edges were blurred like a speck in one eye. It disappeared several times from your sight, covered by heads and hands that waved in the air. But once you saw it, you could no longer ignore it.
A boy had crouched in the opposite corner of the tower, sobbing desperately and screaming, but nobody seemed to have seen him. But you.
You looked down at the woman still harpooned on your arm, she trembled and kept murmuring meaningless words, slipped into total despair.
You squeezed your fingers more tightly around Asuka's, who suddenly gave up trying to push you into the crowd.
When you turned around, she was looking at you. Her eyelids widened as she saw an uncertain smile extend on your lips. But she understood because her hand tightened more tightly on yours.
But it didn't help.
You shrugged your shoulders with a determined gesture, freeing yourself from both Asuka and the woman's hands, and you sprang forward, avoiding the body of a man who came against you. Your legs moved, shaken by a new rush of adrenaline.
You didn't even hear Asuka desperately calling your name; by now, the only thing your ears were full of was the fast beating of your heart against the eardrums. Nor much less, your eyes don't capture your friend's attempt to grab you again, go empty, pushed back by the crowd. The only target on which your gaze was fixed was that orange dot at the bottom of the tower.
Before you knew it, you were there, next to that little crumpled figure on itself that kept screaming and crying.
"You are Sosuke, right?" you asked in a calm and reassuring tone, without even knowing how you had been able to.
Hearing his name, the boy suddenly stopped screaming, nodding. He sniffled, wiping his tears with his arm. "I want my mom!"
"Give me your hand Sosuke, now we'll go together, okay?" and, as you did with Asuka, you shook his hand, determined not to let him go.
Sosuke seemed reticent, but he did not resist or try to escape, and a sigh of relief escaped your lips.
You turned around, and it was almost with tears in your eyes that you noticed Asuka running towards you, shouting your name.
"Asu-chan!" you greeted her, partly relieved that she had not abandoned you there, alone.
The relief was fleeting.
A shock more durable than the others forced you and Sosuke, as well as most of those present, on their knees or to look for something to hold on not to end up lying on the ground.
This time the floor didn't just shake. The blow was so sharp that you felt it up to your knees and scattered throughout your body until your teeth chattered. The screams reached the peak, the air filled with dust and iron beams fell from the ceiling and beyond the window.
You saw the floor in front of you open in a black slit that spread with frightening rapidity, emitting a horrible creak. Your eyes searched for Asuka's, fixed in horror on the same show. She had seen it too.
Sosuke let out a more sharp cry, sinking his face against your chest.
The floor crumbled. The weight of gravity weighed on your shoulders, crushing you against what remained of the corner where you found yourself trapped.
You cursed, trembling like a leaf, but your hands firmly grasped the waist of the child who screamed in terror when you raised him in the air. You didn't even know how you managed to stand up.
"Asu-chan! Take him!" you shouted, throwing Sosuke towards Asuka, who instinctively spread her arms, seeing him arrive.
Your heart skipped a beat. Two.
You didn't realize you held your breath until your friend's arms tightened around the baby.
"JUMP! DAMN! JUMP! " Asuka shouted, reaching out her other arm.
You tried to run, while the emptiness drew your body and the floor under your feet with more force. It was like trying to swim against the current.
The figure of Asuka became more and more distant.
And suddenly, you understood that you were now running uphill on an increasingly steep surface.
You pushed with your points against the last bit of floor remained intact, where the crack had now become an abyss overlooking the void.
You felt your stomach squirm at the feeling of the ground missing under your feet.
Your fingers touched those of your friend, looking for them desperately, and you smiled, drunk with joy.
I've done it! I've done it!
But Asuka's face twisted in horror when that contact failed, and her hand tightened around the air. She screamed your name at the top of her lungs, and it seemed to you that her voice filled the whole city with the force with which she did it as your body dragged down.
Lower and lower.
Still, that stupid smile didn't leave your lips as tears started to pinch the corners of your eyes.
You didn't even have the strength to scream anymore.
"I got you!"
You sensed the movement of air. The hair suddenly stopped lashing your face with strength, and the stomach's emptiness disappeared. There was only a warm warmth against your cheek and a rhythmic and dull accelerated thudding against the ears in its place.
You were no longer at the mercy of anything. Two strong supports surrounded your back, resting on your shoulders, and legs, just below the knees.
When you found the courage to open your eyes that you had not realized that you had closed, you found your face pressed against a firm and broad chest. Your hands clawed to a thick, dark green fabric.
The air around you seemed to have come to life, charged with electrostatic current and subtle bright green flashes.
You were still in the air, suspended in nothing, but you were not falling. It was like you were floating.
It was with uncertain eyes that you looked up, meeting the profile of a square jaw, a face with soft features and cheeks full of freckles. A boy. A Hero.
The wind stirred a short mop of curly hair cut in a messy textured top, and on the nape in an undercut fade. Two large, emerald green eyes lowered onto yours.
"Don't be afraid," the stranger reassured you, and for a moment, you thought you were dreaming, but his voice and body seemed too real "I'm here now," he continued, broadening the smile that had never abandoned his lips.
Your eyes could not leave him, unable to lower them onto the city, still too far from your feet.
A strange heat began to radiate throughout your body, down to your cheeks and the tips of your ears.
It is there. Suspended in air, in the arms of that stranger, that you stopped being afraid.

4 au 10 janvier 2021
It was a very cold week. The ground has been frozen in the mornings. The landscapers have started building a short retaining wall around the Mediterranean garden around the pool. I spent most of the week removing pine needles, olives and leaves from under the plants. I also did a bit of weeding. I lightly pruned a few Brugmansia and will see how they perform.
I weeded around many of the citrus trees. Michel says he thinks the cold will harm the roots, so I didn’t continue. I really hope nothing happens to those trees.
It’s been so cold that I have put off some pruning of Cestrum nocturnum that will have to wait until after the overnight temperatures stop dipping below freezing. I also want to cut down the grasses soon.
I took more cuttings of the Lavendula. There are also some roses that will need to be propagated this year too.
Tuesday Denis stopped by and I gave him a quick show around the garden. Florian was also here. However, he was in a rush so we didn’t have any time for a catch-up. It was great to see him again. He was in my course at London College of Garden Design in 2012/2013.
Thursday my DSL router arrived and that evening Lucien helped me get my WiFi and television all up and running. It’s so nice to have the Internet here.
Saturday night I decided to swap bedrooms, including curtains. I pushed the other bed against the wall to get my desk to fit in the new study. The printer is up and running on WiFi. It’s definitely starting to feel more like home.
Sunday I went to a surprise party for a friend of a friend in Antibes. There were seven of us for the afternoon of good food, dancing and a little fun. Of course we all departed in time to make it home before the 18.00 curfew.

The Bugs Formerly Known as Homoptera
The true bugs in this essay, all herbivores, are familiar to most garden ers. Unlike their relatives the heteropterans, both pairs of wings, whenpresent, are fully membranous. For this reason their suborder was named Homoptera, “same-winged.” (Taxonomic research has now separated them into two unrelated suborders. See notes at the essay’s end.) Some of these can multiply without sexual reproduction (parthenogenesis); aphids often generate more aphids this way. Nymphs usually resemble adults; adults of many lack wings. Most are small, but they can become a big problem and often are not welcome in our gardens. Indeed, some are our most reviled insect pests, not only aphids but also scale insects, mealybugs, and whiteflies. But we have allied ourselves with homopterans in the past, and they have a role to play in our gardens, as we shall see.
Homopterans have been historically prominent in human affairs. The cochineal scale insect was the only good source of red coloring (carmine dye) for clothes and food until a synthetic alternative was invented in the late 19th century. Carmine dye was exported to Europe from the New World (South America), and was used to color fabric for royal clothing, religious vestments, and the British Army’s red coats. It was historically used to color the Italian liqueur Campari. More recently, health concerns over the use of synthetic colorants have caused producers of certain foods and cosmetics to circle back to carmine dye. A related insect, the lac scale, forms masses that look like a dark, lumpy crust. This material is the source of the wood finish shellac. Did you know that before the advent of vinyl, record albums were pressed from shellac? The first plastic, Bakelite, was developed as a replacement for shellac products. Biblical scholars have suggested that the manna from heaven that sustained the hungry Israelites during their years in the desert was thought to be honeydew (sugary excreta), yes, from a scale insect. The advent of modern biological control, as mentioned in the essay on lady beetles, was initiated by the accidental introduction of a homopteran the cottony cushion scale from Australia. The introduction of two of its natural enemies, both native to the same region of Australia, the vedalia beetle and a parasitoid fly, have effectively controlled this pest of the California citrus groves since 1888. This story shines a light on a basic truth here: these little bugs are food! Without them, many other insects and animals would go extinct, and the food web on which we and all life depends upon, would be severely disrupted. Most lady beetles, for instance, prey on aphids, scale, mealybugs, and other homopterans. Lacewings, parasitoid wasps, hover flies, and other insects that rely on these bugs as essential food are themselves critical food for others. Many fish, amphibians, and birds depend on insects, including the abundant former-homopterans, for all or part of their diet. I have watched hummingbirds gathering aphids when nestlings needed feeding, delighted that they were raising their young in my garden. Remember, all homopterans are herbivorous—they eat plants. In response, plants have evolved numerous defenses, such as sticky hairs, waxy cuticles, and toxic compounds. Some plants even produce hormones that control homopteran growth. Herbivorous insects adapt to overcome certain plant defenses. The plants respond by increasing their defenses, and so on. The result is an “evolutionary arms race” in which each organism is adapting in response to the other, becoming more specialized as time goes by. The result is that many plant-feeding insects are highly host-specific.

Trip to Kew Gardens on 14/08/2020
I made my first research based trip to Kew Gardens on the 14th of August. Due to COVID the gardens weren't open to public for a long period of summer however I managed to pay a visit. Unfortunately the Marianne North gallery and the Shirley Sherwood gallery were both closed, as were the archives, however I hope to make a visit to this at some point when they open, however due to COVID this is difficult at the moment.
Things I learnt from my visit:
The greenhouses are home to a wide range of plants, many of which are extinct in the wild and only thrive within the care of Kew, as they can keep conditions perfect for them
Kew has a history of cultivating plants with medicinal properties, scientists look at the chemical components to identify potentially beneficial compounds, for example, aloe vera
Pollination is an important part in food security - a third of the worlds crop yield depends, to some extent, on pollinators, the Hive, an art sculpture, highlights the importance, pressing question - how can we protect our pollinators to ensure we can feed a growing population?
There is a tree called the ‘Pagoda tree’ which is so old and overgrown that is has been held up by stilts and a brick wall to ensure it can still thrive, it used to stand 15m tall but one the lower branch remains now, it is a relic from Princess Augusta’s original arboretum, 250 years old, horticultural management keeps it alive, brick work protects roots
Alpine plants keep close to the ground to expose only a small surface area, slow growing, over lapping leaves reduce water loss
St Helena olive, extinct, Kew conservationists collected cuttings from last known wild plants before it died, succumbed to termite attacks and fungal infections, DNA stored in sub zero temp at kew DNA bank, may be able to bring species back in the future
Dombeya mauritiania, remarkable at it changes gender depending on the temp, hot conditions it grows male flowers, cool conditions it grows female flowers, was thought to be extinct however a tree was found and cuttings were made, all specimens of this plants are clones of two wild specimens found, hope for future as there is still some genetic diversity to be able to hopefully restore populations
12 specimens of cylindrocline commersonii exist growing on mountainside, only has two species, both critically endangered, seeds stored at seed bank
cabbage tree existence was threatened by feral goats eating it, 1980s three mature trees left, situation was stabilised by reintroducing lost species and the removal of feral goats
managing invasive species must be done to restore plant populations, top 10 pests are: cotton bollworm, tobacco whitefly, cotton aphid, fall army worm, green peach aphid, diamondback moth, taro caterpillar, two-spotted spider mite, brown plant hopper, red flour beetle

$AMFE Completes Multi-Year Audit and Submits for Uplist to OTCQB
Amfil Technologies Inc. Completes Multi-Year Audit and Submits for Uplist to OTCQB, Confirms 2017 Year End Revenues of $8,168,251 and Year Over Year Increase of +3500% Toronto, ON, (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — via NEWMEDIAWIRE — Amfil Technologies Inc. (OTC: AMFE) is pleased to announce that our company auditors, RBSM LLP, have completed and signed off on the multi-year audit of the company’s financial statements. The company has submitted the required information with the OTC Markets Exchange to up-list from OTC Pink to the OTCQB Venture Market. The company is hopeful that through continued advancement and expansion, a second up-list will occur to the OTCQX Exchange later this year. The audit completion and approval by RBSM LLP, provides third-party verification as to the accuracy of the company’s financial statements. The audit provides further evidence of the company’s success and exponential growth over the past two years and highlights the enormous growth potential soon to be realized. It is expected that the audit completion and subsequent tier up-list will provide an enhanced sense of confidence to our current and potential shareholders moving forward. Key adjustments in the audited statements include: · Audited revenues for fiscal 2017 now shows a total of $8,168,251, a difference to the upside of $1,637,278 compared to the unaudited statements previously filed showing $6,530,973. This was due to an inputting error that consolidated certain transactions using only the net revenues as opposed to both the gross and the net. · There was a reduction in Net Income due to a large game development profit being pushed into Q1 2018, as well as some Interloc-Kings Inc sales being written off. This resulted in an operating loss of $309,761. Legitimate arguments could have been made to retain the income on the financial statements, however, due to the additional time required to complete the adjustments to support the transactions, the company felt the cost would outweigh the benefits and would be immaterial to the company’s long-term success and shareholder value. The audited financial statements can be viewed here https://www.otcmarkets.com/stock/AMFE/disclosure The audit process took longer than originally anticipated due to the high volume of transactions over multiple subsidiaries and their related business divisions. We appreciate the support and confidence from our loyal shareholder base and we are excited to move forward with a number of positive growth initiatives to further increase shareholder value. The audit completion and upgrade to the OTCQB Venture Market will provide shareholders greater transparency, open the stock up to new market makers, and attract new larger private and institutional investors that were previously unable, or unwilling to invest in unaudited companies. Meeting/exceeding the increased compliance and informational requirements of the OTCQB Venture Market confirms and ensures the company’s commitment to transparency and should provide current and potential shareholders the utmost confidence in the information and disclosures provided by the company. The company has submitted the required documentation to OTC Markets to uplist to the OTCQB Venture Market and anticipates the uplist to be approved and completed in the coming weeks. Benefits of listing on the OTCQB Venture Market include: · Increased transparency for shareholders and the investment community · Free in-depth Level II stock quotes for investors · Potential for additional market makers (There is a fee to quote OTC Pink stocks. It is free for market makers to quote stocks listed on the OTCQB Venture Market) · Ability to reach a broader audience of retail and institutional investors who require potential investments to be audited and current with their reporting requirements. · Increased “visibility” through the various awareness platforms provided by the exchange, such as the OTCQB Podcast, Newsletter, Website, and Social Media Platforms. The company has worked out an agreement with OTC Markets where payments made to the exchange will be pro-rata and applied to the application and listing fees if/when a second uplist occurs this year to the OTCQX Best Market. Further, the completion of the audit and subsequent uplist will allow for the previously announced spinoff of the Interloc-Kings Inc. subsidiary. In conjunction with the spin-off, shareholders will be awarded with a special dividend in the newly formed entity based upon their holdings in Amfil Technologies Inc (AMFE). This initiative has been developed to fuel the growth for each subsidiary and will provide a well-deserved bonus to the shareholders who have held strong and supported us through this period of growth and development. Specific details relating to the spinoff, including the record-date, plans for the new entity, and awarded share ratios of the special dividend will be announced in a future press release. “It has been a long and arduous journey. I would like to thank our shareholders for their patience and support during this stage in the company’s development,” stated Roger Mortimer, CEO. “I was blessed to receive words of encouragement and support throughout the extended audit period which were of huge value. I would like to once again reaffirm my vow to do everything in my power to deliver increased value back to our loyal shareholders and ensure that the wait was well worth it!” The company continues to execute on a number of exciting initiatives. The unit can also constantly regulate a given facility’s water supply, oxygenating the water and maintaining a consistent PPM infusion of ozone that prevents the formation of algae, bacteria or mold (allowing for comprehensive water recycling), simultaneously removing the need to use pesticides and/or dangerous, often carcinogenic products to treat production problems, as is common throughout the industry today. This environmentally-friendly solution also eliminates odors, while slightly reducing the air temperature, lowering energy consumption by the HEPA filtration and HVAC systems and could potentially allow for a facilities process to be labeled certified organic in the U.S.A. when the crop is no longer considered illegal on the federal level, otherwise “Clean Green” or “Certified Kind” in the meantime. The EcoPr03 GRO3 Antimicrobial System recently passed product review by a registered USDA certifying agent for use in California as well as Pennsylvania and surrounding states.
