Rafe sat in his car, the evening sun casting a golden glow over the horizon. It should have been beautiful, but it just looked empty to him. Everything did these days. His knuckles were white against the steering wheel, and on his wrist, was a faded pink hair tie, a quiet reminder of you.

He hadn't meant to keep it. It was one of those stupid, small things that had been left behind—a meaningless rubberband, but it had somehow gotten a permanent fixture on his wrist.He'd thought about throwing it away a million times, but every time he tried, it felt like letting go of you for real. So instead, it stayed, wrapping itself around him like a goddamn chain he couldn’t break.

The first time he'd snapped it against his wrist had been accidental. He'd been frustrated—another fight with his dad, another failed attempt to prove he wasn't a total fuck-up. His hand had absentmindedly yanked the band, and the sharp sting that followed had grounded him in a way he didn't expect. It wasn't enough to make him cry or scream, but enough to feel. Enough to take his mind off you, if only for a second.

Now, it had become a habit. A ritual.

Rafe reached for the hair tie, pulling it back and letting it snap against his skin, followed by a sharp, fleeting pain that left a red mark. He stared at the ridge forming on his wrist, his heart heavy.

You had always worn the same pink hair tie, using it to throw your hair into a messy ponytail whenever you’d go running down the beach or when you got too caught up in laughing at his terrible jokes. That hair tie had seen it all—the good, the bad, and the ugly.

And then you left. Because of him. Because he was too much and never enough. He pulled the band back again, harder this time. The snap was louder, sharper. His wrist throbbed. He exhaled shakily and leaned his head back against the headrest.

Now here he was, alone with nothing but the sound of the waves and the constant reminder of you. He grabbed the hair tie again, snapping it repeatedly. His wrist was already red, maybe even bruising, but the pain was good. It shut your voice up for half a second. It was better than the hollow ache in his chest, better than the constant replay of your smile in his mind.

But the sting didn't fix anything. It didn't bring you back.

The passenger seat beside him was empty, but in his head, you were sitting there, rolling your eyes at him, telling him he was being dramatic. You’d always been the rational one, the one who grounded him. Without you, he was nothing but chaos.

Rafe's voice cracked as he whispered quietly, "I'm sorry." He wasn't sure who he was apologizing to—you, himself, or the universe. Maybe all three.

The hair tie snapped one last time before he finally let go. His wrist was aching and bruised, and he pressed his fingers over the marks, as if trying to soothe a wound that ran much deeper than his skin. Yet it stayed on his wrist, a permanent dent in his memory. He didn't know if he'd ever be able to let it go. And maybe that was the point.
