What are the extraction methods for CBD oils?
Tumblr media
Supercritical method, cold pressing, vegetable oil, solvent… So many terms that qualify the manufacture of CBD products. But what reality is hidden behind each of these practices? Is there a fundamental difference between CBD products extracted in this way or that way? What is the best mode of extraction? In this blog, you will explore the manufacture of CBD and its impact on the different CBD oils.
The origin of CBD
CBD (cannabidiol) is a molecule naturally present in hemp and known for its relaxing effects. A notable property of CBD is its lipophilic character. Chemically, CBD can only bind to fat or oil. Thus, it is not soluble in water. In order to transform CBD into oil, there are several Cannabis extraction methods, more or less natural, each with its own taste and specificities.
Extraction methods to create CBD oil
Let's review the four main methods of extracting CBD: supercritical extraction (1), cold pressing extraction (2), vegetable oil extraction (3), and extraction. by solvent (4).
1. Supercritical CO2 extraction
CO2 extraction aims to create phase changes (state of matter) in the CO2 and make it reach a so-called supercritical state. This process makes it possible to extract CBD while maintaining the number of terpenes in the plant material (CBN, CBG, etc.). Manufacturers favor this method for its efficiency and relative simplicity: no use of solvents or chemicals could alter the product's purity. However, CBD oil extracted with supercritical CO2 must be reprocessed to remove all traces of THC, which requires laboratory intervention.
CO2, a non-volatile element, is also already used in several industries wishing to control the concentration of a molecule, such as coffee and essential oils. At the end of the process, the CO2 is condensed and stored for reuse. Nothing is lost; everything is reused!
Thus, supercritical extraction is often used for the creation of rich and flavorful Full Spectrum CBD oils.
2. Cold Press Extraction
CBD extraction is often done cold for the same reason: to maintain a natural result while retaining the taste of the terpenes.
With the cold-press cannabis cbd oil extraction equipment, you can run the frozen hemp flowers through a press yourself and extract the CBD and terpenes as low-CBD hemp oil. It is a simple and ecological method to produce your own CBD. Disadvantage? It is not a very effective method when it comes to cannabidiol… Indeed, it takes a lot of hemp flowers to produce little CBD. This is why, apart from edible hemp oil, you will not find or find very few cold-pressed CBD oils on the market.
3. Vegetable oil extraction
Another DIY method, vegetable oil extraction, involves using hot oil to extract CBD from hemp. Instead, use olive, sesame, or coconut oil. This natural method makes it possible to produce tasty CBD oil. But the problems associated with artisanal extraction remain: you need a lot of hemp for little product; moreover, the hot oil may damage the molecules you are trying to extract.
4. Solvent extraction
The hemp is bathed in a solvent in order to extract the CBD. The solvent can be either ethanol, butane, or propane. By heating the liquid, the solvent evaporates, and only the CBD oil remains. The aforementioned solvents are flammable, even explosive; this process is reserved for knowledgeable chemists and CBD Growers.
What is the best CBD oil extraction method?
Supercritical extraction is the most effective way to produce natural, flavor-rich CBD oil. When cold, it keeps the CBD and terpenes pure, does not alter molecules, and uses no solvents, although a second treatment may be required to achieve less than 0.2% THC in the final bottle.
Very effective, it uses a minimum of hemp for a maximum of oil. Finally, ecologically, it reuses CO2 and requires very little energy for high yields. Artisanal extraction may have its charm, but supercritical extraction remains the most efficient and guarantees cost control for both the producer and the consumer.

Cultivar
For @feministhotline
.
Consider Brassica oleracea, wild cabbage, a single species of plant. Once humans got their hands on it, they bred it into useful and radically different cultivars. Cabbage, kale, collard greens, kai-lan, brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cauliflower, to name a few. Not to mention the cousins of the species, which included turnips, bok choy, rapeseed, and mustard.
If people did this for a moderately tasty plant, it was, therefore, foolish to think that there was only one cultivar of blood blossom, a plant that could affect ghosts in such an intimate way.
The blood blossoms ghost hunters had gotten their hands on had been bred to cause ghosts paralyzing agony when in close proximity. A good idea in theory, but short sighted in the long run. Especially when the cultivar was unable to affect half-ghosts in their human forms.
There were more interesting varieties.
The one commonly known as ghost nip, with its lily-like flowers, compelled ghosts to consume their stamens, which both induced a sense of calm and euphoria in the ghost and caused the ghost to begin producing pollen for the flower, which in turn would be spread to other flowers when the ghost moved on, fertilizing them. Those were valued among some ghosts as a recreational drug and reviled among others.
The tattoo rose’s microscopic seeds would take root and spread delicate, glowing vines just under a ghost’s skin, feeding off their ectoplasm. When prepared to reproduce, thumbnail-sized red flowers would burst from beneath the ghost’s skin. The process tended to weaken the host, render them lethargic and hungry, but tattoo roses were also beautiful and, somewhat counterintuitively, had a notable stabilizing effect on the ghosts they inhabited. Many weak ghosts, or ghosts on the verge of dissolution, had been saved by the tattoo rose. It was lucky for everyone else, however, that the tattoo rose was not, like its namesake, permanent, but only lasted through three blooming cycles before fading.
Hanahaki was a very niche cultivar, one that subsisted exclusively on the stresses and emotions associated with unrequited or unconfessed love. It grew primarily in the mouths, throats, and lungs of ghosts unfortunate enough to have them. Although ghosts have no need to breathe, those afflicted often lost the ability to speak. It had been bred in one of the Cherry Kingdoms, as a punishment for one of the Empress’s suitors.
Meanwhile, false poppies – named for their effect more than their appearance – made ghosts drowsy. There were stories of ghost falling asleep in beds of false poppy blood blossoms and waking only when their blooming season was over, roots having grown over their still forms. Less potent false poppies could, if one were careful, be harvested for sedatives.
Witch’s clover was another one that had first been used by humans. Ghosts exposed to it became more suggestible, gullible, pliant, and vulnerable to other forms of control, such as hypnosis. A boon for a group of people who gained power from their dealings with ghosts. Of course, some ghosts had use for it as well.
The saltseed varietal had sparked the myth that ghosts were repelled by salt. In truth, the tiny, cubic white seeds of the plant simply absorbed ectoenergy so quickly and so efficiently that ghosts would recoil from it.
Then, on the opposite end of that spectrum, was the wishing rose, which would give any ghost who touched it a massive boost of ectoenergy—all while injecting them with one of its seed pods. Which would eventually explode to spread their seeds. The explosion typically wasn’t fatal to the ghost, but that didn’t mean it was pleasant.
None of this even touched on the hybrids Sam was developing. It was a tricky proposition. It was difficult to tell exactly what any given hybrid would be like, what traits they would pick up, what new traits might arise from the combination. None of the ones she had tried so far had the combination of effects she wanted.
However, she had a much greater ability to experiment than any other ghost or human. Her father’s power combined with her human immunity to most blood blossom effects guaranteed it.
The hybrid she was currently carrying showed promise in early trials. Now, she was taking it to the real test.
She emerged from the great forest that had grown in the ruins of Amity Park and smiled at the sun on her face. Her dress of petals rustled behind her as her father’s vines shifted behind her.
Ahead of her, on a small hill, stood a dome made of blood blossom vines and scavenged ironwork and glass. Concentric rings of blood blossoms, each containing a different mix of cultivars, surrounded it. She checked the health of the plants as she passed, revitalizing the ones that seemed to be wilting with a thought.
When she reached the dome, she gestured, and the vines peeled back, opening a hidden door as they went. It squealed, announcing her presence.
In another life, she might have thought about oiling the hinges. Now, it didn’t even cross her mind as she entered her greenhouse, her miniature garden, which she had constructed for one person and one person alone.
One person who was, aggravatingly, hiding from her. Again.
She rolled her eyes and surveyed her surroundings as the gate shrieked shut behind her.
It was hot and humid in the dome, the air full of luminous clouds of pollen, thick enough that even a person without allergies might have trouble breathing, might feel drowsy. More practically, it prevented the inhabitant from using a certain sound-based weapon.
The blood blossoms were healthy, for the most part. The ones whose vines comprised the main structure of the dome were thick and strong, their hanging blooms full of color. A version of false poppy, they kept the ghost contained within from destroying the dome in partnership with the saltseed planted around its base. Elsewhere in the dome, the more healing varieties were largely untouched. Although, the ghost nip had been destroyed. Again.
(How stubborn. She had planted them with the hope that he would, for once, relax.)
The fruits and vegetables, some ghostly, others largely human, which had been planted to provide more material sustenance for the garden’s inhabitant, appeared to have been cared for and harvested since Sam’s last visit. Good. She didn’t want to deal with a pointless hunger strike.
The spring at the center of the dome burbled merrily.
“Danny,” called Sam. “I have something for you. Won’t you come out? We haven’t talked for so long.”
She could, of course, give him her gift without being anywhere near him, such were the powers her father gave to her, but she really did want to talk to him.
“There’s nothing to talk about,” said Danny, who was hiding in a tree.
“There’s always something to talk about. My offer still stands. It gets boring without you, Danny.”
“Maybe you should have thought about that before you used everyone else for fertilizer!”
“Well, I can’t exactly take it back,” said Sam. “It was something father decided on.”
Silence.
Danny, scowling, jumped out of the apple tree. He stumbled somewhat on landing. The prolific blood blossoms combined with his sporadic eating habits and the heat had weakened his core. His skin was slick with sweat. Or, perhaps, he had taken a dip in the spring, earlier.
Sam felt a fond smile spread across her lips. It really had been too long.
“What do you want?” asked Danny, leaning against the trunk of the tree. He kept glancing at her but seemed unable to hold her gaze for any length of time.
She walked closer.
“It’s good to see you, Danny. Isn’t it enough for me to want to see a friend?”
“Yes,” said Danny, bluntly. “Why don’t you go see Tucker?”
Sam sighed. “I’m sorry you feel that way, Danny.”
He flinched. “Stop saying my name,” he muttered. “You aren’t her.”
Her smile became more forced. Well. He was back on that, now, was he? No matter.
She flicked her fingers, sending the miniscule seeds she had brought with her to Danny, and waited. Tattoo roses rooted quickly, and so did this hybrid.
She knew the process had started when Danny hissed and started clawing at his skin. She grabbed his hands, stopping him.
“W-what—” he started before Sam shushed him.
This hybrid had a number of useful features, having been developed from tattoo roses, witch’s clover, and false poppy. It was, as was the case with all tattoo roses, impossible to get away from. The mild false poppy effects lowered the ghost’s defenses and provided an analgesic effect that was necessary given the greater size of the cultivar compared to the typical tattoo rose. The contribution of the witch’s clover was pliability, rendering the affected ghost docile and obedient. Finally, as an extra treat, Sam had discovered that the hybrid could last up to ten blooming cycles. Cycles she would use her abilities to draw out for as long as possible.
Danny sunk to his knees, his breathing, already heavy, becoming ragged.
“Hurt-sss,” hissed Danny, shuddering.
Sam cradled his head, noting how feverish he felt, a welcome change from the frigid, hypothermic temperature he’d maintained for the months after Amity Park fell. “Shhh, shhh, it won’t last long.” She traced the slightly raised and vibrantly glowing skin that indicated the presence of a vine. As she did so, she started to feel the leaves unfurl and tiny buds begin to form. “There we are. How does that feel?”
Danny raised his head. His eyes were foggy, unfocused, his pupils blown wide. “Who?” he slurred.
“It’s me, Sam.”
“Hmn, Sam. Id’nfeels’g’d.” He let his head drop back to her lap as small flowers began to force themselves out of the skin of his scalp.
Sam examined the flowers closely, pinching off the ones that seemed ill-formed. She would have to monitor Danny carefully for the next little while, to see how he adapted. He took so much care to cultivate. Truly, a tender, delicate, hothouse flower. But it was worth it.
After all, out of all the plants her father had given her, all the flowers in her garden, blood blossom cultivars included, Danny was surely her most prized.

Summary:  Jaime, adoptive sister of Finnrick and fiancée of Casey, is late to work. The Grimoire, magical library and hub of all knowledges is her workplace and she has thrown herself into it completely for whatever reason. Still with Casey lingering on her mind, she can't help but feel torn between her love of books and the love of her life.
-----
As Jaime hurried away from Willow’s Rook and Casey, she couldn’t help but feel disappointed in herself. She told herself under no circumstances she would see her fiancée but one glance towards his office and Jaime was knocking on his door without a second thought. A ten minute conversation later and now she was late to work.
She sighed, glancing downward towards the engagement ring snugly wrapped around her finger.
Jaime’s heart raced beyond her control as her fingers tingled with the warmth Casey’s cheek. She could still feel the pulsing of their hearts beating in time with one another, love and longing palpable in that moment.
“Jaime, why do you do this to yourself?” she murmured sadly “You said don’t see him. You said don’t visit him. You said you could handle this whole break and now we’re late.”
Jaime picked up her pace, power walking in hopes somehow that could shave off the seconds she desperately needed to avoid being reprimanded: The Grimoire may have been a library but it had a strict late policy both on books and personal.
-----
The Grimoire was as elegant as it was ancient: The library was one of the oldest buildings in Newton Haven, constructed when the city was little more than a mile of stacked bricks among swampland. Faded red stone archways and columns did nothing to belittle the power and importance of the Grimoire. Even the mundane folk could feel the magical force that radiated from within, a fantastic world beyond the threshold.
Of course there was a fantastic world hidden inside: The library was one of the major hubs for the magical community and it wasn’t uncommon to see various races searching the many bookshelves for whatever subject tickled their fancy.
The interior was elegant and timeless: The walls and floors were soothing shades of brown with furniture pulled from all eras of human history. Three stories of endless knowledge about countless subjects. Translucent spirits hurried back and forth, humming happily in death as they did in life while they performed their duties to the Grimoire. In the center, amid the hustle and bustle, stood a spiraling staircase that disappeared beyond the ceiling to the Librarian’s office.
There, just past the entrance and to the side, was a security desk with a figure lazily sitting upon it: He was humanoid, muscular and impossibly large, easily seven feet tall. His skin was gray as storm clouds and his eyes shone with an electric blue shade. His hair and beard were frosted white like he dove face first into snow. His uniform consisted of a dark blue buttoned up collared shirt that was one flex from tearing in two and old rugged jeans. His black combat boots were immaculately cleaned as he placed them on the surface of the desk.
He clicked his tongue as he slowly turned the page on the latest romance novel he had been enthralled by.
“Sinclair, you’re late.” He spoke softly but even a whisper couldn’t stop his voice from reverberating throughout the hall.
Passerby’s shot confused glances at one another but no one stopped at Dusty’s declaration
The storm giant sighed, rubbing his eyes tiredly “Sinclair, you’re not fooling anyone.”
Silence and more quizzical glances.
Dusty shook his head, disappointed as he snapped his finger.
The air smelled of fresh rain while a source-less thunder boomed overhead. Nearby, a person, previously invisible, flickered into existence. Their previously camouflaged self changed into a rainbow of colorful hues before bursting into a flurry of sea green sparks and revealing a sheepish Jaime, her hands raised in defeat.
“Sinclair.” Dusty’s voice was dry yet amused.
Jaime clasped her hands together as she made her way over to the storm giant’s desk “Dusty! I...”
“Am late.” he finished for her, a gentle chuckle escaping his throat “Remington again?”
“Whaaaaaa?” Jaime’s face scrunched into a false sense of surprise “No, no. Come on. Me and Casey are….well you see…..it’s frankly none of your business.”
Dusty nodded wisely “True. It is none of my business. Go on before I sic the ghosts on you.”
Jaime gave a quick curtsy before running as quickly as she could. Dusty rolled his eyes before returning to his romance novel he was previously captivated with.
-----
Everyone who worked in the Grimoire had their own personal office tucked away somewhere to ensure privacy for personal studies. Jaime’s office was in the back of the library, hidden behind the alchemy section. It was one of the wider offices, more akin to a school class room. True to her wizard background, it was messy: Piles of folders, books left open and hastily scribbled papers were sprawled about. A fairly sized cauldron sat ontop of her desk, currently not in use. Sticky notes littered randomly across the walls. And like any true wizard, a magical circle was engraved directly into the center of the room for varying purposes.
Despite the appearance of her lair, she was actually one of the more organized of wizards. Even her prodigal brother Finn’s lair wasn’t as well maintained and cataloged as her. Though, to be fair, she did have help most wizards didn’t.
Jaime placed her bag by the door, eyes searching about for her helper.
“Bartholomew! Bartholomew Ringtail, you here?”
A moment past before the sound of rustling papers and scuttling paws could be heard. Jaime reached into her pack and pulled out a bag of popcorn just in time for Bartholomew reach out for the treat.
Bartholomew Ringtail, like his name suggested, was raccoon. Light gray fur, little black mask over his snout and tiny adorable paws. However, unlike most of his kind, wore a small cap upon his head and that made him cuter than the average raccoon.
Well that and the fact he was magical.
While her brother was a master practitioner of powerful protective wizardry, Jaime’s skills lay elsewhere as a conjurer. Her strength came in summoning powerful familiars to further her goals.
Normally a wizard would have to spend time preparing the ritual, collecting the materials related to whatever being they were trying to bring onto this plane. Demons, angels, fey, constructs of strange and alien machinery from beyond human understanding. Anything could be summoned if you had the proper knowledge and power.
Normally such rituals would take hours if not days to perform: Time to gather magical energies, to search the planes of reality for your being of choice and of course drag it kicking and screaming to you. Also summons were temporary as beings not native to the plane could only be sustained by whatever magic brought them. Much like a timer, the magic would slowly fade and once empty any being summoned are forcibly returned from whence they came.
Jaime was much faster and more persuasive in her summoning spell casting. She could do it in a matter of minutes as opposed to days though it still required a massive amount of magical energy, Unlike other wizards, conjurer summons did not decay over time. Whatever they brought into this world stayed in this world unlike magic could no longer maintain their form, usually from being attacked over and over.
Bartholomew was one such creature. In fact Bartholomew was Jaime’s first summon back when she was a fledgling wizard being trained by her brother. She wasn’t hundred percent where exactly he came from but she was grateful for her longtime companion and friend.
Bartholomew popped open the popcorn bag and hurriedly began to stuff handful of the tasty snack into his waiting maw.
Jaime smiled brightly before glancing about room, quietly complementing which project to continue.
A wizard’s magic was as much studying as it was practice.
Finnrick once described the difference between wizards and other casters as using a phonebook. The others were given a phonebook by some higher power. The numbers were already written down and set. However, they could only use those numbers and each different caster had different numbers for different purposes.
Wizards, on the other hand, no such phonebook. They have work hard, study and call each number to understand what the number did. Aside from being tutored by other wizards or spellbooks or other sources of knowledge, the wizard must discovered and write down the numbers on their own, creating their own phone book. Of course that meant wizards weren’t as limited as the other casters and were free to discover a possible infinite amount of spells.
Jaime took a step forward when a voice called out to her.
“Hey sis!”
Jaime whirled around to find the smiling face of her brother Finnrick, fedora in one hand and a friendly wave in the other.
“FINNY!” Jaime cheered, racing forward and wrapping her brother in a tight hug.
Finnrick laughed before returning the gesture “Hey Jai, how you doing?”
“Good” Jaime broke away “Great even! I was just about to practice my spells. I’m still having trouble.”
“Sis.” Finnrick’s voice became firm “It’s visual as much as it is feeling.”
“I know, I know” Jaime shifted uneasily under his gaze “It’s just I usually just bring in heavy hitters, not be one.”
“Any wizard can stick to their strengths. Great wizards are well versed in all forms magic. Spar?”
Jaime gave a crooked smile “Loser buys lunch.”
“And dinner” he cockily added.
Jaime motioned to the circle but Finnrick was already on it. Clasping his hands, Finnrick murmured something too softly for her to hear then pushed his arms outward. A blue dome formed over the two, encasing them in a makeshift arena.
Jaime took her place opposite of her brother “Ready?”
“Sisters first.”
Jaime closed her eyes. She imagined a flame in the palm of her hand. She imagined the heat from the flame. She imagined how it shifted back and forth with a gentle breeze. She saw it clearly in her mind’s eye and then she willed it into reality
“Inferus!” Jaime shouted, her hands glowing with a sea green glow. The flame burst into existence, just as she created. She pulled her arm back and lobbed it with as much force as towards her brother.
Finnrick didn’t budge an inch while flame sailed his way. He rose his hand calmly and with a mighty swing, backhanded and sent the flame skittering across the floor.
Finnrick didn’t waste any time in his counter attack. His finger tips gleamed with blue magical energy and with a flick forward, unleashing a barrage of icicles.
Jaime outstretched her hand forward, sea green glyph forming in the air. A thin matching barrier appeared in front of her in time to catch the first of the icy attack but as the rest collided, cracks began to widen and spread with each successive blow.
“Don’t fight like me Jaime!” Finnrick scolded, sending another wave of icy daggers.
The barrier hadn’t lasted under the second barrage: The moment an icicle collided with her shield, it broke, scattering and fading out of existence.
Jaime, however, was prepared. She ducked and weaved under the attack, pivoting her heels like a graceful dancer while moving her way out of the line of fire.
Jaime twirled about, gathering the magic in her hands before sending outward. Long streams of flames began to swirl about like tendrils reaching for prey as she spun about.
Finnrick gestured at her with a finger gun and clicked his tongue, bringing down his thumb like a hammer of a gun. Jaime’s eyes widened with surprise as she felt some foreign entity began to shift and make her spell uneven. She tried to maintain it but Finnrick’s surge of magic was too much for her. The magic she held exploded, the flames vanishing as the force of the spell breaking sent her sprawling to the floor.
Finnrick was already on the move, arching his arm backwards before throwing forward a bolt of lightning.
Jaime sprung to her feet, leaning as far back as she could to narrowly avoid attack. The lightning bolt struck the dome but before she could react, it bounced and struck her directly from behind.
Luckily it was a training session and only gave a her a light shove forward. Jaime flapped about wildly before she manged to get her balance steady.
“Game, set and match!” Finnrick beamed with a grin.
Jaime rolled her eyes “Big surprise my genius brother won. The dome’s so small I barely had room to move!”
“Exactly!”
Jaime shot her brother suspicious glare.
Finnrick rose his hands “Hey, never let your opponent dictate the field of battle if you can manage it.”
“Yeah, I should’ve seen that coming” Jaime sighed.
Finnrick made his way over and wrapped his sister in a loving one armed hug “Remember sis, real life has no rules.”
“Yeah, yeah.” Jaime nudged Finnrick’s ribs playfully “Whatever you say cheater.”
Finnrick ruffled his sister’s hair playfully “Life lessons are important to share to your siblings. Need help with anything?”
“Oh you better be spending time with me. After that thrashing you gave me, you owe me big.”
Finnrick stood up straight, hand raised in a lax salute.
Jaime responded by poking his stomach.
“Oww, I give I give!” Finnrick chuckled “Why must you resort to violence?”
“Family upbringing I guess.”
The two siblings fell into a peaceful quiet as they began shifting and searching through Jaime’s notes.
“Jaime?”
“Hmm?”
“Question.”
“Answer.”
“Any word on the big move?”
Jaime stopped, her hands hovering over a book.
“No” Jaime murmured weakly “No word yet. They’re still debating I guess.”
“Mhm” Finnrick replied without much else.
Jaime turned to her brother “Finn, I…”
Finnrick rose a hand to stop her “It’s your life. Your choice. If this is what you want, then I will be happy for you.”
“But?” Jaime added in.
Finnrick pursed his lips, running his finger down the spine of a nearby book “I want you to be content as well. I know you…..I mean….you’re still wearing the ring.”
Jaime glance down to her engagement ring. She could still feel Casey’s warmth underneath her fingertips, his heart beating rapidly in time with hers.
“Think about it” Finnrick said with a hint of finality “Life’s too random to live with regrets.”
“So” Jaime cleared her throat, desperate to change the subject “Any news on your angel?”
Silence.
“Finn?”
She found him fidgeting with his fingers, his cheeks blazing a bright red as he averted his gaze.
“Finn! You found her?! And you didn't tell me?!”
Finnrick gave a shy nod, biting his lips nervous.
Jaime lunged at him, wrapping her arms tightly around him in a loving embrace “That’s great bro! When am I meeting her?”
Finnrick turned to her, unsure what she meant “What?”
“When am I meeting her” she repeated.
“Umm….why?”
“To interrogate her of course!”
“Jaime!”
“What? Just cause you like her doesn’t mean I do.”
“Jaime, don’t you dare!”
“Try and stop me!”
Finnrick dove for her but Jaime saw it coming a mile away. She pivoted on her toes, twirling out of the way of Finnrick’s attack. As her brother began to chase her around the office, Jaime quietly enjoyed this moment between siblings.
She was going to miss this when she left Newton Haven behind.

Bat girls - chapter three
Chapter one Chapter two
Again, please be nice. I’m learning as I go and English is my second language. And any tips on how to better write conversations are very welcome!
We were flying. Actually flying. I had expected to be afraid, but I wasn’t at all. The wind hit my face as we quietly soared through the darkening twilight. I felt like this was the first time I had ever been able to breath.
I had no clue for how long we were flying. I even dozed off at one point. And when I looked up again the crescent moon had travelled to the other side of the sky, and the terrain beneath us had become wilder. We were now flying through mountains. The trees taller than I had ever seen. The ground rocky and grey.
“Don’t scream” was Aïda’s only warning right before we dropped down, straight towards the side of a mountain. I was sure we were going to crash in to it and had every intention to start screaming when Aïda angled her body and sailed into an nearly invisible opening. Everything was dark, and I had absolutely no clue how she knew where to go but she navigated the cave tunnels flawlessly, sometimes nearly missing a wall of hard rock.
My eyes had gotten used to the dark, and when we flew out of the tunnel the night sky was almost blinding. I wondered why Aïda hadn’t just flown around the mountain or over it when I saw it. We were still inside the mountain. It was somehow hollow.
“Impressive isn’t it?” Aïda said when seeing the stunned look on my face. “we found it by accident. The mountain is to high to fly over, and the peak is always covered in clouds. Even if any Illyrian would come to this part of the land we would still be invisible. If not for the help of the mountain, we still would be for how we set up camp.”
Aïda lowered towards the trees, getting ready to land, and it wasn’t until we almost skimmed the top of the trees that I saw it. People lived here. There were buildings between the trees. I wasn’t sure if I should call them tents or houses. They seem to have been build from whatever material available. Canvas, wood, stone, clay. Some even had a chimney, while others weren’t more than a tiny shelter against the wind and rain.
We landed in a clearing near the rocky wall of the hollowed out mountain. Aïda whistled twice as soon as her feet touched the ground. A short whistle was the response from somewhere in between the trees. “This way the ones on guard duty will know it’s me.” She said while gently putting me on my feet. My entire body was sore from being in the same position for so long, but Aïda offered me an arm to lean on.
We walked towards the wall of rock, or Aïda walked and I stumbled along, clinging to her arm. Only once we got closer to the wall I noticed the cave entrances. They seemed to be everywhere, in all shapes and sizes.
Aïda led me to what looked like a tiny opening compared to some of the other gaping cavemouths, but as soon as we turned the corner I realized this was the biggest cave I had ever seen. My house could’ve fitted five times in it. The small opening did a good job of concealing everything inside. The warmth from the fires, the smells of food, the sound of trickling water, and a female humming a quiet song.
“You’re up early.” Aïda said to the female, who hadn’t even looked up from the fruit she was peeling. “You know me, I’d rather cook than sleep.” She finished hollowing out some type of citrus fruit I hadn’t seen before, and looked at us. Her face didn’t betray that she was surprised to see me, but her thoughts did. They where so loud. She might as well been screaming to me. Skinny. So skinny. She’s still a child. Aïda didn’t bother introducing me and left me standing while she walked to the nearest pot, simmering on a fire, lifted the lid and smelled with a look of approval. She almost put in a finger when the female spoke again. “By the mother Aïda, where are your manners!? You know better than to try to steal my food, and you haven’t even introduced our guest.”
She waved me over to the table where she was working. “Sit.” She said, gesturing to a chair. “Do you want something to drink or eat?” before I could even think about the question she was already moving. Filling a bowl with something from a large cauldron hanging over a fire. After the bowl was filled she brought it to me, the spoon still in her hand, turned around and flung the spoon straight at the back of Aïda’s head. It missed barely and Aïda whirled, still chewing on something. “Next time you steal my food, I won’t miss.” She said with an authority that had Aïda swallowing whatever sarcastic remark she had been thinking off.
“You know what?” Aïda said while rubbing the food that had splattered from the spoon on to her head away. “I’m going to get some sleep. It will be sunrise soon and I plan to train with everyone else.” She walked by where I was sitting and quietly asked me “If you want to I can stay, or you can come with me and we’ll find you somewhere to sleep.” I shook my head. It wasn’t that I wasn’t tired, but I just didn’t want to go to sleep yet. Aïda didn’t wait for an explanation and left, and the female took the seat across from me.
“I’m Lina. The resident cook and spear thrower. The last one I mostly practice when people do not listen to the rules in my kitchen. The rules are simple, do not steal and don’t waste my food.” She gave a pointed look at the untouched bowl in front of me, and I quickly started eating. “We call it slob. It’s somewhere in between a soup and a stew, and it’s impossible to eat neatly. But it takes care of all the scraps left over and it’s nutritious. Now tell me your story.”
I swallowed a hot scoop of slob and tried to find somewhere to start. “My name is Zenna. And I’m fourteen.” My own thoughts where interrupted by the screaming thoughts of Lina. It wasn’t as much of a thought, but more a sob actually. Fourteen. It echoed in her mind. “I’m from Woodbound.” I blurted, trying to banish Lina’s pity and sadness. “That’s one of those tiny camps near the edge of the forest, right?” she asked and I simply nodded, quickly taking a bite in the hopes Lina would keep talking. I never liked talking, especially not about myself.
“You’ll find that things are different here. We call our camp Skyward. Not just because we’re so high up, but also because for a lot of us it is the only place we ever got to fly.” She fluttered her wings a bit, that were tucked in so neatly behind her I hadn’t even noticed them. “My daughter and I came here five years ago. The three of us fled when the wing clipping started again. Unfortunately my husband didn’t make it.” This time the sadness wasn’t just in her loud thoughts, but in her expression. “I still remember when Dran found us. He is one of the few males in Skyward. My husband had already frozen to death, and I was certain I would be next. I begged him to save my daughter. He dryly asked if it would be okay with me if he saved us both. And he brought us here.”
“What is it like?” I asked in between bites of slob, that was surprisingly tasty. “Hard. We need to survive, train, and stay hidden at the same time. But we have a dry place to sleep and food in our bellies, some females that flee the camps end up way worse.” She was silent for a moment and an image entered her mind. Of a Illyrian female being burned alive, screaming and pleading. Lina snapped herself out of it. “There are eighteen of us here. Three males, fifteen females. Including me and my daughter. You’ll find a place in the daily rhythm soon enough.”
Lina got up and started filling a bucket at a tiny stream of water coming down along the wall of the cave. “We have a hot spring more towards the middle of this mountain. After training a group will go for a hot bath and to do some laundry. You can also bathe at a nearby waterfall but it’s very cold. Or I could warm up some water for you and get you a towel.” Even though a hot bath sounded great, I couldn’t imagine bathing in front of others. Especially not strangers. “I’ll take the bucket.” I said, and Lina emptied the bucket in a kettle on the stove. “I will find you some clothes later. First you will need to meet with our camp-leader.”
The blood drained from my face. My father is a camp-lord and I have met some of the others when they where visiting. Each and everyone of them had been harsh and cruel. “Who is the camp leader?” I asked shyly, while Lina was busy warming up some water. “I am.” A voice smooth as night said behind me. I turned around and looked right in to the most beautiful eyes I had ever seen, eyes so deep blue they where violet.

Lasabrjotr Chapter 22: Interim
Chapters: 22/? Fandom: Thor (Movies), Marvel Cinematic Universe Rating: Teen And Up Warnings: concealed racism Relationships: Loki x Reader (Let’s try this again) Characters: Loki (Marvel), Reader, Brunnhilde(Marvel), Thor(Marvel) Additional Tags: Post-Endgame: Best Possible Ending (Canon-Divergent), Lets Make This Bread, Royalty Means Short Weekends, That’s A Pauldron Summary: Everyone tries to go about their daily lives.
“You can just leave me here for a little while.” You told Brunnhilde. “I'm gonna bake up something tasty, but it'll take time.”
The kitchen staff moved around you, going about their own business, but not entirely ignoring you. You had been given permission by the kitchen supervisor to stay and make something, as long as you didn't disrupt his workers, or get in the way of the regular flow of the kitchens. Since you only wanted to use an oven, and a little space for making dough, you were pretty sure you could abide by those rules.
You rolled up your sleeves, put another apron on over your decorated apron, and began gathering ingredients. You became engrossed in your work quickly, lost in comfortable familiarity, so much that you didn't notice Brunnhilde leave.
                                                                      *****
Loki sat at his desk reading stacks of papers, and setting them in piles; some to be signed permission on, some to be denied. There were all kinds of things in these stacks, but mostly, there were requests. For specialized building materials, for permission to sell certain Asgardian-made items on the internet, For leave to go into the nearest town and place a large order for food and toiletries for the Einherjar and trainees, for priority on construction of this building or that, and so on, and so on. The kind of thing that needed the permission of authority, but not quite material that the king needed to bother himself with.
Loki didn't mind much; even if they were considered of lesser importance, they still needed to get done. And there were many, many more of them needing attention than Thor ever saw. Didn't that make him of at least equal importance?
This was the part of royalty that no one ever really thought about. Oh, they saw and coveted the luxury, the wealth and power, the title, the name. No one ever saw the paperwork. The sheer amount of things one had to know how to do. Even the noble houses had no idea of the scope of it, though the merchant class likely did.
Ugh, speaking of the noble class...Loki read with distaste through a petition to classify certain titles and jobs as 'Asgardian Heritage Occupations', effectively barring any members of other species from them. This was so obviously in reaction to the rumor of your appointment to seidkona, and yet, even if it wasn't, he couldn't sign off on it anyway, or he'd be out of a job himself. He put the petition on the 'denied' pile, and moved on.
Saga wanted permission to go out into the human encampment-they had taken to calling it Trolekaerhalla, 'the Hall of the Faithful'-so that she could learn and record their stories. Sadly, that would have to be denied as well, for now. He hadn't questioned them properly yet. On the pile it went.
Ah, now this was interesting. Not long ago, builders digging the foundation for an expansion to the-well, Loki supposed this would eventually be a palace-broke through into caves. Apparently, they had been formed from lava tubes, produced by one of the islands many volcanoes. It was worth exploring these caverns; if they ran under the city, they might need to be shored up in places, to keep the above ground portions from sinking, and they might be useful for storage, emergency escape and safety, or even for adding a second level to their city, if the tunnels were extensive enough.
This report stated the discovery of a solid wall of ice, blocking progress in exploration. That was interesting. An underground glacier could also be very useful, as a supply of fresh water. They had the river, and the surrounding fens, but the environmental specialists were very adamant about limiting water extraction. This might solve all those problems. The report asked permission for miners to be brought in to dig through the ice, in search of a way to the other side. Loki signed, and set the report on the pile.
It might be nice to go down and look at the caverns. When you came back, he should take you to see them too. If you wanted. He thought back to the picnic and stifled an embarrassed flinch. He'd taken you out, away from the city, alone, near the trees where you'd be hidden...what must you have been thinking then? What must that have looked like to you?
The next paper was a request for...oh no. Absolutely not. It was another request from the noble house of Kykvendings that he meet with their daughter. They'd been trying this for centuries now. Unnar was a fine lady, but it just wasn't going to happen.
That one went into the 'denied' pile.
It wasn't that he disliked the woman; she was refreshingly honest and blunt for a noble. She'd stated outright that she simply didn't want him. As a person who both detected lies, and was constantly surrounded by them, he treasured the honesty. It was one of the reasons he'd insisted on keeping Andsvarr.
The boy had never expected to be much of anything, and had grown up as the baby of the household, able to express himself freely, and not caring a bit about courtly intrigue. Then all four of his elder brothers had died in Hela's attack, and suddenly he was the only heir. He clashed with his father constantly, but he hadn't lost his sense of freedom. That made him valuable in the world of nobles, as far as Loki was concerned.
He'd rather keep Unnar as a semi-ally among the noble houses than ever give her family the slightest hint of a marriage alliance. Especially since the entire kingdom now knew the truth of his heritage, and he was fully aware of how the lady looked upon Frost Giants. He wouldn't do something so cruel to her as to force her hand to someone she found so very distasteful, even if that someone was himself. And he certainly wasn't interested in being wed to someone that he knew for certain would never want him.
In this new age, arranged marriages would be a thing of the past. Technically, it already was, but it was still common practice among nobles and some merchants. He would see the subject brought up to Thor. His brother wouldn't hesitate to ban the practice altogether. If there was anything Thor had grown to hate, it was the curtailing of basic freedoms. He didn't even want to build a prison!
Yes, he would bring it up with his brother, and he might never have to see another expectant request like this again.
His stomach grumbled.
He'd lost track of time. At least his paperwork was done, and he could get a snack without any guilt.
He headed to the kitchens, seeking something sweet. He'd just wandered in and grabbed a twist of honey bread when he spotted you. Everything around you suddenly became inconsequential; you filled his vision, the deft movements of your hands, the flour that dusted your clothes and smeared your face, powdered you white nearly to your elbows. The contented joy on your face, an expression he had never seen on you before.
How it drained away the instant your shining eyes landed on him. How you drew in on yourself, mumbled something and retreated hastily into one of the back pantries.
Oh, that stung.
He ate his honey bread as if he held a grudge against it, chewing ferociously as he surveyed your room, looking for ways that he could make it better. He'd sent people out after beautiful houseplants, and fairy lights, once he had looked up what they were. It would take some time though, even on Asgardian horses; the nearest town was quite far away, and there was no guarantee that the necessary items could be found there.
He wanted to make this a perfect home for you, but how could he expect you to come home when you couldn't even stand his presence? He hadn't anticipated how much that kind of rejection was going to hurt, but it sure did.
He would just have to deal with it. Be patient. Accept what he had earned. Acceptance was always the hardest part for him.
At least he knew now that it wasn't entirely him that was the problem. Someone else had hurt you, and you had projected that hurt onto him. Something could be done about that!
He wasn't allowed to kill the man. Brunnhilde had talked him out of it, after finding him eavesdropping outside her door and kicking him in both ankles.
“If you were listening, you know how she feels about it.” Brunnhilde had said.
“Yes, she said she hated him.” Loki had pointed out. “I would be happy to take vengeance on her behalf.”
“What vengeance? She already killed the guy once. You go after him and she'll hate you, I guarantee it. Think of something else.”
So how could he shed the skin of your past pain, and present himself to you as a new man? He really should have thought about this before. Of course terrible things could have potentially happened to you during the Snap; disaster all too often begat further disaster. And you were a woman, and available, and not completely unattractive. You would have had to face certain things...But never again. How did he differentiate himself from your projection?
Grand gestures and high drama would have been his preference. He found it satisfying, and was quite good at it. But perhaps it was better for you if he exercised subtlety instead. Or at least kept the grandeur to private moments and smaller gatherings.
He'd spoken to Thor about his ideas, and his brother had approved of all of them, enthusiastically. When you returned, he would set them into motion. When you returned.
Not if. He couldn't accept if. He couldn't let it become if.
                                                                        *****
Sofie and no few others watched Fritjof carefully, as he spoke with the newest arrival. She had come all the way from Siberia, alone from the looks of it. She'd brought a very large, conical tent made of skins, and dyed with blue geometric designs. She had deep tan skin, straight black hair, and wore thick, luxurious fur clothing, also richly decorated with colorful designs.
Sofie found her beautiful, and she was clearly very bewildering to Fritjof, who had approached her haughtily, and was having the tables turned on him. The woman had apparently expected to be confronted about her appearance; she had her phone out, and was pointing out historical articles while reciting her family tree all the way back to Geirmund Heljarskinn.
That was fairly impressive; Sofie knew Fritjof couldn't trace his ancestors back more than five generations, and this young woman was walking all over him. Perhaps it was a little unkind, but Frit could use the shaking up, in Sofie's opinion.
She didn't know who had led him to his conclusions, but his worldview had been done a lot of good by being shattered by the likes of Heimdall and the black Einherjar; by _____, and now this indigenous Siberian woman, who knew more about her own family history than Fritjof ever would.
He left her to continue setting up her tent, perplexed.
“Not what you expected?” Sofie asked.
“She...I didn't expect any of that.” Frotjof said quietly. He'd been more subdued lately, his aggression slowly waning. “She says to just call her Savane and to not ask further, as it's complicated. She knew many names. Apparently she is descended from a Norwegian king? Says she is Nenets, but her people were Sikhirtya before that, but what I don't understand is why she came here? She's clearly immersed in her own culture and ways. Why leave that to come here? Why bring it with her while she is here?”
“Why not?” Asked a heavily tattooed man who was sharpening a fish-boning knife nearby. “Just looking at her, you can tell she knows how to take care of herself when winter comes calling. That's a boon to us; have you seen the tents those Australians brought? Like paper! Once she gets settled, I'm going to ask her about the construction of her tent and clothes. I might learn something valuable myself.”
Fritjof glared at the man, but it was a weak glare. His eyes seemed drawn to a tattooed Othala rune, flanked by ravens, that graced one thick shoulder.
“Precisely.” He said. “Why come here? She obviously doesn't need us. She doesn't need anything from us.”
“Why shouldn't she come just because she wants to?” Sofie asked. “Besides, she does have a connection. I know the name of her ancestor; he's famous here. She probably just wants to see the land of her ancestor; maybe she's drawn to the gods as well.”
“But doesn't she have her own?” Fritjof persisted. “Why does she need ours?”
“You do know that there isn't going to be less god to go around, just because there are more people here, right?” The tattooed man said. “You wanna have a go at me? I got Polish grandparents, you want to complain about that?”
“No, no.” Fritjof said. “It's just, she seems like she has everything. I don't understand why she would leave it.”
“Maybe it's we who need her. Maybe she was brought to us.” Sofie said. “You're right, she looks like she could teach us all a thing or two about winter survival. It doesn't really matter where she's from, she's a part of the community now, and we all help each other. Frit, you stay here and figure yourself out. I'm going to go greet her.”
“You know, this isn't all that hard to figure out.” The tattooed man said, as Fritjof watched Sofie approach the young woman with an apple. “You just have to get it through your head that you don't own anything. Gatekeeping is pointless. There's no gate.”
“And Odin speaks to you, does he?” Fritjof snapped. “You just know the way things are supposed to be?”
“Odin wandered the realms in search of wisdom. Where do you think he got it, the air? He learned from other people! Did our ancestors become great by staying home and never talking to anybody else? Use your head man! Humankind has always been on the move, always mixing, always learning from each other, always innovating. These are things that come naturally, but the gods inspire us to even more. Don't you hear them? Not in here.” The man pointed to his head. “In here.” He pointed to his heart.”
“There have to be rules.” Fritjof insisted.
“No. There don't.” The tattooed man countered. “There only needs to be what you alone know is right. Not what your message boards say is right, not what your government says is right, not what your father says is right. Why don't you take some time to think on what you know?”
“Why don't you mind your own business?”
“Why don't you?”
Silenced, Fritjof stalked back to his own tent, the sound of Sofie and Savane's laughter following him.
                                                                          *****
You were still kicking yourself. After all that talk about going back to your room, and moving forward, and looking at Loki in a new light, a single glance at the man had sent you running. You had been able to cover it with a story about looking for powdered sugar to make glaze with, and the kitchen staff had kindly furnished you with granulated sugar and an old-fashioned mortar and pestle. It had taken a moment for you to get the hang of it, but once you had, you had gone practically medieval on it. It was a convenient outlet for your embarrassment and frustration.
The glaze had come out beautifully though.
You'd made cinnamon rolls. Apparently, it was a recipe new to Asgard, because your tray of gooey goodness had everyone's attention. You ended up writing down instructions and making another batch in demonstration before they would let you leave.
You made it out with a plateful, heading to the familiar, anxiety-ridden halls where royalty resided. Andsvarr was thrilled to see you, and also extremely interested in the cinnamon rolls. You cheerfully gave him one, on the condition that he split it with Saldis.
You also left a whole roll for Loki, but could not bring yourself to enter the rooms and present it yourself.
You left one for Thor in the same way, And also Bjarkhild, and one cut into bite-sized pieces for the Valkyries to sample. One more went to Brunnhilde, which left one sweet treat for you.
How long since your last cinnamon roll? Ten years? A hundred? An eternity, it seemed.
Only two months. Maybe a little bit more. Two months and a single bite of a familiar treat brought you back to a completely different world, a completely different life. Cornfields and tornado sirens, buzzards and fireflies. All things that defined your life up to this point, all things that didn't exist here.
Iceland was quiet, even out here in the wilderness. No amphibious harmony at night, hardly any birdsong in the day. With the sun never quite setting, time was hard to tell. It was surreal, and you knew that sometime in the future, you would be facing the opposite. After these long days, would come the long nights, when the sun disappeared, and there would come a winter unlike any you had ever faced.
How did people live through such a thing? Obviously people had, for hundreds and hundreds of years, but it was hard for you to imagine. What did people do in that eternal, frozen night? How deep would the snow get? How would people work?
Would they just stop until the sun rose again? Surely not. How could a country run that way?
Maybe it was because you were American, but you couldn't fathom the idea of not working for three months. How could anyone keep occupied for so long? Especially if the snow forced everyone to stay indoors. Most of the jobs you had seen being performed were either in construction, or government. Construction would have to stop when the snow fell. What did all those workers do when winter came?
Perhaps that was when they practiced other jobs? For when the city was finally all built up, and construction workers were no longer in such high demand?
Well, you knew what you'd be doing. Learning. Magic and language, history and politics. You probably would not be able to train with the Valkyries during the winter. Your body just wasn't as resilient as theirs, and you would not be able to withstand as much cold as they could. Better get in as much practice as you could, while you still had time to do it.
You finished your cinnamon roll, and decided to head out to the training area. As usual, you gained more than a few stares on your way, but you didn't stare back, and you had your knife visible at your belt. Nobody bothered you.
Maybe Loki's idea of showing off actually had merit? It might be that Asgardians were just polite, or perhaps wrapping you in fine trappings made you seem untouchable. You hurried though, just in case that spell wore off once people noticed you had no escort.
You arrived to find Borgljot instructing the others on the repair of armor, using a pretty beat up leather set. You raised your hand as you approached. She pointed at you.
“Ah? Yes, supplementary student? Thy query?”
“Which part of that is the pauldron?”
“Why, 'tis this right here.” She obligingly pointed out the shoulder part. You nodded. Well, now you knew.
Borgljot tensed, then dropped the armor, all of the trainee Valkyries diving out of the way as a huge ax split the air between them, trailing lightning. You jumped back even further, grabbing for your knife. Borgljot began shouting orders, though she'd reverted to the Asgardian language, and you were the only person on the field who couldn't understand her. You snatched up the old armor and held it up in front of you, just as the ax came wheeling back along its course, knocking over one of the trainees who had stood up too swiftly.
The enormous weapon flew unerringly back into the kings hand as he strode out on the field, winged helmet and bossed armor shining under the everlasting sun. The Valkyries rushed him, but he knocked most of them back with a swing of the huge weapon.
Once again, you were impressed with the incredible strength displayed by the Asgardian people. No one should be able to wield a weapon that large and heavy one-handed like that! And to be struck by it, and yet get back up, like the Valkyries were! It shouldn't be possible.
Valda and Velda threw themselves at Thor's right leg, one stomping on his foot, the other jabbing him hard in the back of the knee. They barely made it buckle, and a swipe of his hand sent them both rolling as he laughed and shouted praise.
The Valkyries were inexhaustible, continuously being thrown to the ground, rising, and throwing themselves back into the fray. Thor let it go on for a minute or so longer, then struck the ground with the blade of the ax, lightning spraying out all around him. The energy arced from warrior to warrior, flooring each one.
A stray arc sped toward you, and in terror, you flung the armor and knife away from you, holding your hands out. You felt something sear through your body, deeper than your bones, but it wasn't the lightning. Instead, solid metal slammed you to the ground, pinning you there. The electric arc dissipated before touching you.
The great ax lay on your chest, too heavy to move. You had teleported the entire thing right to you.
You crowed at the sudden victory, throwing your fists into the air. You had done it! You had finally performed magic on your own!
Borgljot began shouting victory with you, and the others picked up the call.
Thor approached and retrieved his weapon, grinning broadly down at you. He took you by the arm and helped you back to your feet.
“Getting the hang of it now, are you?”
“Yes!” You beamed. “I know what it feels like now! I can...I...”
You sank slowly down to the pebbly ground, your limbs suddenly leaden. Shivering overtook your body, so hard it made your teeth chatter. Your brain fogged, but you didn't pass out, wallowing in confusion. What was happening?
Thor crouched next to you, a large, steadying hand on your shoulder. It didn't help at all, though it was at least warm. He shouted something to Brunnhilde, who sent one of the twins back into the building, and shooed the rest of the women away from you.
You could hardly hear anything, and what you could was garbled and nonsensical. You couldn't seem to form words within your own mouth. All you could do was lay shaking on the sand.
“What is this?” Brunnhilde demanded, kneeling next to you in the dirt. “Are you injured? Did the lightning hit you?”
“It's the magic.” Thor explained. “It hits her harder. It's all right _____, just wait a moment. Loki will be here soon. You'll be all right soon.”
You couldn't help but hope that he hurried.

Rin & Maki (Love Live!)
Tap.Tap. Tap tap tap. When Maki was tapping her foot along to therhythm of a song, the sound was enchanting and the motion was soothing. WhenRin was tapping her pencil atop her desk in a frenzied manner, the scatteredbeats bashed against the inside of Maki’s skull. She tried to nonchalantly wrapher crimson curls around her fingers as a distraction, but she was almosttempted to tear her own hair out if it would dull the pain of the obnoxiousblows throbbing inside her head. How did Hanayo ever have the patience to tutortheir feisty, feline-loving friend?
“Oy, Rin.” At this point, Makicouldn’t help but wonder if the ginger-haired first year was procrastinating.“We’re almost done. Then we can go out for food, like I promised.”This news caused Rin’s head to perk up, and she immediately stopping slappingher pencil chaotically on her desktop and instead put its point onto the paperin front of her.
“Whydo we have to learn this anyway?” she grumbled as she scribbled her answers.“Does anybody talk like this?” Maki merely rolled her eyes, allowing Rin amoment to complain as long as she was working while doing so. In all fairness, they had been studying for at least two hours. Maybe Rin’s tapping wasn’t aform of stalling or goofing off, but rather a way to release nervous energy asher brain was becoming burnt out. After two hours of dancing, she would stillbe as peppy and spritely as ever, but her mind apparently wasn’t accustomed tothis type of intense exercise.“Aaand… ta-dah!” The excitedexclamation broke the silence without warning, and Maki nearly jumped out ofher seat. Rin dropped her pencil and triumphantly lifted her paper up to thered-head’s face. “Well? Well? Are they right?”Maki slipped the paper out of Rin’s hand with adisgruntled huff, her heart still pounding in surprise. She held the paperbefore her face as she reviewed the answers, hoping to hide how startled shehad been by the other girl’s sudden outburst. “You got… all but thisone,” she announced at last, placing the worksheet back onto the table.“Remember, since she’s expressing a wish, this sentence would say ‘were’instead of 'was’, so that–”“You’ve got to be kidding meow!” Rinsnatched the paper and narrowed her eyes as she scrutinized her work. Hastilyshe grabbed her eraser and rubbed furiously to eliminate any trace of hermistake. “Then it’s this one!” She slapped the slightly crumpled paperleaned back in her chair and folded her arms proudly across her chest.“NOW it’s perfect,” she announced. While Maki was well aware of the fact that Rinwas far swifter than her, she usually would have at least tried to stop thoserash, rugged movements that wrinkled her homework. If her reflexes failed, thenshe would have reprimanded her friend for her carelessness. Instead, today allshe could manage was a frustrated sigh, and she muttered a snarky, “Well, process of elimination works that way.” Maybe she was running out of steamherself.
Rineither missed her sarcasm or simply didn’t care, because she propped herself uponto her elbows and leaned across the desk towards Maki. “This means we can gonow, right? Wherever I want, right?”
Makilifted a finger to push Rin’s forehead back, putting space between them. “Isaid when we finish, that I would take you anywhere,” she confirmed. “My treat. However…” Her gaze flickered to the worksheet. “I’m not sure you’ve masteredthe material.” She could tell that Rin had drawn backward before she eventurned to look at her again. The ginger-haired girl deflated like a balloon andslumped backward into her seat. Maki glanced at Rin’s defeated posture and felta pang of sympathy. When Rin was down, the whole room seemed to feel cold, asif someone had extinguished the sun. “Come up with a sentence using thesubjunctive,” she instructed. This would be a fair compromise. “As soon as youcan create a unique, proper sentence, all by yourself, then we can go.”
WhileRin’s hunched shoulders conveyed that she was still disgruntled, her eyes nolonger had that same defeated look. Rather, they sparkled with defiance. Herlower lip jutted out in a little pout as she turned those gleaming cat-likeeyes to her strict, studious friend. “If I were Maki-chan,” she muttered, shuffling impatiently in her seat, “I’d take Rin out to eat already.”
Makiopened her mouth to deliver a stinging retort, but her jaws slowly clamped shutas she processed what she had just heard. That… that worked. “Grab your keysand phone.”
Growingup as the only daughter of wealthy doctors, as the sole heir to a hospital, hadforced Maki to learn certain life skills at an early age. Undoubtedly, she had leda sheltered life due to her upbringing, but she also developed a great sense ofcaution. Be cautious of how you act in public, for you are reflecting your family.Be aware of the expectations placed upon you. Be mindful of the people withwhom you choose to associate, in case they only seek to use and abuse yourfriendship.
Coupledwith her naturally introverted nature, the result was that Maki hadn’t exactlyaccumulated a large crowd of friends during the course of her life. Opening herheart to μ’s was a slow, and at times painful, process but also one ofher proudest accomplishments. She had found lifelong friends who loved her forher talents, her wit, her eccentricities, and even her shortcomings.
Ifshe could welcome these girls into her home with open arms, then she had noreason to feel fearful when offering Rin a free meal. Some people would perhapstake advantage of her hospitality, and indulge in an exquisite lobster meal, orperhaps opt for an elite steakhouse—some place where they could not normallyeat.
Rin,on the other hand, essentially did the exact opposite. With a twinkle in hereye and a skip in her step, she dragged Maki by the wrist through alleys andside streets to a place where the pianist would never fathom visiting.
“Aaaah~!”Rin inhaled deeply and let out a delighted sigh as they slipped through the entrance. The dainty jingle of a wind chime was far too faint to mask the creaking of theold door’s hinges, but the softness of the simple sound helped soothe Maki’srapidly beating heart.
Themore she glanced at her surroundings, the more unsettled the wealthy girlbecame. “Rin,” she whispered under her breath, leaning in closely to the othergirl’s ear so she wouldn’t be overheard, “where are we?” Her heart was poundingagainst the inside of her chest so vigorously that Rin could probably feel thethumping too. With its dim lighting, pitifully small windows, and ricketyinfrastructure, this “hole in the wall” restaurant was quite literally a holein the wall.
Onceagain, the energetic idol seemed to be oblivious to Maki’s underlying urgencyand anxiety, or she simply chose to ignore it. “I’m glad you asked meow! This ismy favorite ramen shop in the whoooole world!” She spread her arms wide andstretched her fingertips, as if trying to bring the whole store into her warmembrace. Rin seemed determined to eliminate any traces of negativity andapprehension by ushering in her pure, bright optimism.
“This…is your favorite ramen spot?” Maki echoed. She didn’t have much time to objectbefore Rin tugged her towards a pair of stools in the corner. Rin’s enthusiasm wasdefinitely genuine, so Maki wasn’t skeptical so much as she was confused. Uponthe smiley first year’s suggestion, μ’s had gone out to feast at ramen restaurantsafter several practices and live shows to celebrate a job well done, comment ontheir weaker points, and discuss their future plans. Not once had she mentionedthis… interesting locale. “I never knew this place existed.”
Ringiggled as she plopped down and began to scan over the menu. “I’d love to takeeveryone here, but I think the nine of us would get a little overwhelming,” sheexplained as Maki carefully sat on the stool next to hers. “It’s pretty nyarrowin here, isn’t it?” She rubbed the back of her head sheepishly. “But! But Ilove μ’s so much, and I love ramen so much, that I want to makesure that I can take everyone here someday, even if it’s just one at a time! This is my hidden gem!”
MaybeRin’s words had eased her mind, or perhaps her dynamic delivery was whatenchanted Maki and made her almost believe that they were hiding together in acrown jewel rather than a sweaty closet. “That’s… really heartfelt,” sheadmitted, and Rin’s wide smile broke into an even broader beam. “A-anyway,” shewent on, turning her flushing face away, “I think a chef is coming our way.”
Rinwas quick to greet the elderly woman who approached the pair of them. “I’llhave my usual beef and egg power ramen!” she declared. “And Maki-chan… shouldwe make that two power ramens?”
Makishook her head and awkwardly mumbled, “I’ll have the, umm, white fish ramen.”
“She’llhave some extra tomatoes on that,” Rin added with a wink as the woman left themwith a tender smile. “Sorry, I should have asked for more time!” she admittedwith an awkward laugh. “I don’t really like fish, so I don’t know how that onetastes… but I know that every other bowl I’ve had here has been warm, tasty, and absolutely purrrfect!”
AsRin rambled on about her favorite types of ramen, her neighbor’s new kittens, her frustrations with English, and pretty much every other event that had somerelevance to her life right now, Maki allowed her eyes to wander around the restaurantonce again. Only one other customer had been here when the two of them arrived, and now they were the only patrons present. This place was easily overlooked, but Rin had somehow stumbled upon it and made the effort to bring her here.
“Haveyou ever brought Hanayo-chan here?” Maki asked when Rin finally took a break tocatch her breath.
“Hmm?Oh, of course! She’s the only other friend I’ve taken,” Rin informed her. “Itry not to take her here too often though, because I know she’d much ratherhave rice than ramen, hehe.” Suddenly her expression became very soft. “I wantto make sure that my friends have as good of a time as I do, so I try to be fair!I decided that I would give Kayo-chin a break. She’s always willing, but that’sKayo-chin for you.” Maki nodded in agreement; Hanayo was always one toaccommodate, always one to be considerate of other’s feelings and avoid rockingthe boat. “And when I thought about the next person who absolutely, positively, had to come with me… it was you, Maki-chan!”
“M-me?”Maki stammered. She was equally shocked by Rin’s blunt honesty as well as thefact that she had surpassed even Honoka, the other bottomless pit of μ’s, and evenUmi and Nozomi on the list of priorities.
Shewas spared from any more embarrassing discussions for the time being as theelderly server returned with their bowls of ramen. Maki blew on hers severaltimes, trying to cool it down before daring to take a bite, but after a deepbreath, Rin dove into her meal without a second thought.
“Rin,you’re going to burn your tongue,” Maki reprimanded gently.
“Maki-chanis no fun,” Rin whined after slurping a long noodle down her throat. “It’s bestwhile hot, so you should eat it n- Wait! I take that back!” she cried as Makibegan to lift her chopsticks to her mouth. “First, you need to inhale deeply.Don’t just smell the ramen; breathe the ramen. Trust me.” She planted ahand on the table and leaned forward to bore her yellow gaze directly into Maki’scontrasting purple one. Clearly unsettled by the other girl’s intensity, Maki focusedher attention onto her food.
Breathethe ramen. She wasn’t exactly sure what that meant, but Rin was extremelypassionate about whatever message she was trying to convey. With a sigh, Makiopened her nose, mouth, and soul to the bowl. The fish broth, tomatoes, miso, daikon, and every nuanced herb and spice wafted up from the dish and filled hersenses. Maki closed her eyes for a moment, startled by the sudden rush offlavor, and took a delicate bite. When she opened her eyes once more, the wholerestaurant seemed to have transformed. The creaky door seemed rustic ratherthan ragged, the soft light illuminated dancing fairies rather than dustbunnies, and the tiny windows served not to trap them but rather enhance thesanctity of their miniature mystical world.
“Well?Well?” Rin scuffled forward, trying to get closer to gauge the other girl’sreaction. “Amazing, right? The best? Doesn’t it fill you with a warm, fuzzyfeeling?”
“It…it’s not bad,” Maki conceded, and she began to twirl a curl around her finger.Hopefully the red hue of her hair would hide the rosy tone beginning to spreadacross her cheeks. Rin didn’t seem satisfied with that answer, but she saidnothing as she turned back to her bowl.
Theysat in silence for a few moments while they ate, but before Maki was evenhalfway done with her bowl, she saw Rin tapping her chopsticks on the inside ofher own empty dish. Normally, the starry-eyed girl never stopped at oneserving, so why was she hesitating? “You can order more if you’re still hungry,”Maki reminded her.
“Areyou sure? You’re treating me, so I didn’t want to be rude…” Rin began to tug atthe ends of her own short orange hair as a flush of discomfort popped onto hernose and cheeks.
“That’scorrect. It’s a treat,” Maki repeated. “You worked hard for it.” Uponreceiving permission, Rin eagerly began to wave down the elderly waitress. “Putyour chopsticks down first! You’re going to poke an eye out!”
Patiencecertainly wasn’t Rin’s strong suit, unfortunately. Not even two minutes hadpassed since she ordered her second bowl of ramen and she was already givingMaki’s dish a sideways glance. “You won’t like it,” Maki stated flatly as sheblew on her next bite. A low groan escaped Rin’s lips and she slouched onto thetable in front of them, gazing wistfully towards the kitchen door. “You can try,”Maki mumbled, “but the fish flavor is rather strong.” As much as Rin lovedramen, she couldn’t stand the taste of fish. Maki however relished the taste, and she closed her eyes once more so she could relive that magical moment whenshe took her first bite. ‘Don’t just smell the ramen, but inhale it. Breatheit,’ she thought. With her eyes closed, she gently lifted a steaming noodle toher mouth and began to slurp softly, softly, not wanting to be unladylike.
Whileshe expected some heat from her meal, which was still considerably warm, shecouldn’t exactly explain the sudden burst of hot air that danced across hernose and lips. Curiously she opened her eyes to see if perhaps Rin’s dish hadcome and brought a new gust of heat. Rather than finding herself faced with Rin’ssteak and eggs, though, she saw that she was nearly face to face with thequirky cat lover herself. “Rin!” she shrieked, biting down harshly so as to cutoff the noodle connecting the two of them. Rin squealed and tried to slurp upthe rest of the noodle before Maki’s abandoned, dangling half could fall to theground below. “What are you doing?!”
“Yousaid I could try some!” Rin blurted out defensively. Maki found herselfsteaming more than the ramen at this pitiful excuse of an explanation. Wasn’tit proper etiquette to wait for someone to finish their meal before scavengingoff of their plate? “That was a bad idea anyway! I really can’t stand fish!”She stuck out her tongue and blew a couple of raspberries, trying to rid hermouth of the salty sea flavor. “And… you didn’t have to react so negatively,”she added in a low whisper. “That hurt, Maki-chan…”
Guiltbegan to fill Maki’s heart when she saw her friend in a dejected slump, like alost kitten without her mother. “Next time, just… just let me know in advance.”She pulled her hair in towards her face as a shield, with full knowledge thather cheeks were probably the exact same color as her curls. “Then I… I can beprepared,” she mumbled.
“Nexttime?” Rin repeated. Her mood once again took a sharp turn for the better. “Nexttime?! You’ll come back? Back to my hidden gem? Oh, Maki-chan!” She grabbed thepianist’s hands and squeezed them tight. Her beaming smile was easily thebrightest light in this entire shop. “But, you know, if I was Maki-chan, I would order—“
“Were.”Maki dropped Rin’s hands and gave a disapproving cough. “Looks like we needanother lesson.” If that lesson were followed by another ramen expeditiontogether, though, then the work would present a worthwhile treat for Maki, too.

The Buddha uses the image of bait to help us break those bad habits that spring from our unhealthy, destructive drives and motivations. Once we recognize that there’s a hook in there the bait ceases to tempt us, even though its outside appearance remains unchanged. When we employ our human reason we have the chance to dig below the superficial, to see the true nature of what we’re dealing with. When we see the hook we’re suddenly liberated from that which imprisoned us. While most of us are aware that certain life habits are bad for us we haven’t done the proper amount of investigation to clearly and unequivocally recognize the hook in there. We know at the theoretical level that a certain pattern of behavior is hindering rather than helping our growth and self-actualization but at the practical level we continue to ignore or minimize the hook while focusing out attention on that seemingly tasty worm instead. If we experienced no pleasure or any other benefits whatsoever from the bait we wouldn’t continually clamp our jaws around the bait in the first place. If we experienced no guilt, no shame, and no destructive societal, psychological, emotional, or material consequences whatsoever we’d have little reason to think what we were doing was a bad habit. The fact that we experience both at the same time points to unconscious conflict, it points to ambivalence. To resolve the inner conflict, to resolve the ambivalence around some bad habit we’ve got to seek to be totally honest with ourselves about both the benefits and the drawbacks of that bad habit. Most of us focus too much on one side while giving short shrift to the other. We either focus all our attention on the undesirable side without bringing the desirable elements fully into our conscious awareness or we focus all our attention on the desirable side without bringing the undesirable elements fully into our conscious awareness. The first step in breaking a bad habit the Buddha way is making an exhaustive as possible t-chart with ‘desirable elements of my habit’ on one side and ‘undesirable elements of my habit’ on the other. Of course we have to remember that in a humanistic sense what is ‘desirable’ is not always ‘good’ and what is ‘undesirable’ is not always ‘bad’. We call ‘good’ all that which aids in growth and well-being and ‘bad’ all that hinders growth and well-being. But pleasant and desirable versus unpleasant and undesirable remains the best place to start because we experience pleasant and desirable and unpleasant and undesirable in an immediate, visceral way. The fact is that if, objectively speaking, there really is no hook in there then the worm is safe to eat, regardless of the cultural or societal pressure claiming otherwise. If there is a hook in there then the worm is unsafe to eat, regardless of the cultural or societal pressure claiming otherwise. Society does not have the final say on what’s good or bad, right or wrong, healthy or unhealthy. The individual does. This call must be made on the phenomenological experience of living life, of experiencing for oneself the psychological, emotional, and practical fruits of a habit. When it becomes obvious that a hook is hidden in a habit, a hook that hinders rather than helps growth and well-being, it becomes obvious that habit is a bad habit and there’s no doubt around whether or not it should be broken.

Nenîth,
By the time we’ve returned to town and I can send this to you, I’m sure I’ll have much more to say. But we’ve reached a lovely little isthmus where we can see water glimmering on either side of us, and we’ve stopped for a bit to eat and to wet our toes in the shore, and it seemed a good time to pull out my LICD and write to you about what we’ve seen so far.
We’ve been three days out here so far and I think I’m going to have to have a chat with Loraine when we get back to town, because I specifically asked her what sorts of threats we might face while we were out here collecting her sensors and was told there were no records of anything particularly dangerous or deadly on the planet, but I have to think she must never have set foot outside of her lab, because we hadn’t been traveling half a day before an enormous constrictor snake decided we looked like a tasty lunch.
Or maybe it’s just that she’s so tall, she doesn’t have to worry about the local wildlife deciding to make a meal of her. Still, it seemed intent upon dining upon all of us, and I daresay if it could have fit the three of us in its gullet, it could have swallowed one lone tiefling without thinking twice.
I worry about Pika, nenîth. She’s very brave, always rushing headlong into whatever threat we face. But she seems to take the brunt of the damage, since she’s always getting up in front of things and punching them in the face, and she won’t even wear armor to protect herself. The snake managed to grab her in its coils and squeeze all the air out of her, and I’m sure that would have been the end of her if I hadn’t been so angry and so afraid that I threw myself up on its back and hacked at it until it had let her go, and had bigger problems to worry about than lunch.
There were weasels, too, a nest of them, and none so sweet nor so small as the ones we befriended on the Hammer of Antas. They’re not half as cute when they’re twice your size and hissing in your face. I took two of the three down with a single arrow apiece, I’m glad to say, and we made short work of the third. It was near evening by the time we reached the location of the first sensor that Hallbjörn placed, and with a little hunting around I was able to find where he’d put it, hidden away a bit to keep it protected from anyone or anything that might have wandered by.
It’s a lovely thing, dark as the night sky with sparks like stars swirling through it, and they seemed to gravitate toward my touch when I lifted it up. I couldn’t say how it works, or what the purpose of those sparks are, but I could have played about with it all evening if I’d let myself.
Instead, we decided it was a fine enough place to make camp, and now that we were out of doors with a fire to sit around, and there was a decent breeze blowing through the trees, I made good on my promise to demonstrate my aedlira to Elyn. She seemed duly impressed, and took some recordings with those gloves of hers. And once I started playing, Pika pulled out a complicated set of pipes and joined in. It was a lovely evening. I haven’t had the opportunity to sit around a fire and make music with people in too long — there isn’t near so much opportunity for it out here as we had in the Feywild, and I miss it almost as much as I miss you two.
The next day, we set out toward the second sensor, and our path took us across a bit of a mountain range and through some grasslands on the other side. Drime had given me a bit of Hallbjörn’s possessions that he’d left behind for Squirt to get his scent from, and it was in these grasslands that Squirt seemed to pick up his trail, though there was something unusual about it that seemed to distress him.
Still, he’s game even when things are strange around him, and between him and a friendly little vole that Pika had a conversation with (I swear, she’s practically chatty with animals, and meanwhile Elyn and I can scarce get a nod out of her at the best of times. I’d think it was something particular to the two of us that she’d taken a dislike to, except I haven’t heard her speak to anyone more than is necessary, saving the beasts) we were able to follow the trail enough to get us to some tracks. The tracks were strange — we were told Hallbjörn was a dwarf, and a stocky one at that, but these tracks were too lightfooted for what I’d have expected of a dwarf. Neither Elyn nor Pika seemed to know of any sort of spell that could have made him so, not on a long-term basis, and the tracks we found went back a month or more, so after some deliberation, Squirt and I snuck on ahead of the others to see if we could follow the tracks to their source without scaring their maker away. Pika meant to accompany us, but we’d scarcely started out when she somehow managed to walk straight into the only tree in the whole of the grasslands. She puts on a brave face, but I think she must still have been recovering from the bout with that constrictor, so Elyn and I convinced her to stay behind and rest while Squirt and I continued on to try to find the person who had made the tracks, without scaring them away.
We were, perhaps, a little too good at that, for we’d nearly stumbled into her by the time she realized we were there, and startled her rather badly, and Squirt and I only barely avoided ending up with her glaive buried in our heads for it.
It was not the best of introductions, and I think I’ll be forgiven for being rather cross with her to start with. Seeing a polearm aimed at one’s dog’s head can have that effect. I liked her even less once I learned that she’s the reason Hallbjörn went missing a month back — it seems he startled her in much the same way we did, and she responded in the same fashion, only he was not so lucky as Squirt and I.
I had so been hoping that we would be able to find Hallbjörn alive all this time, perhaps only lost or injured and in need of assistance. I will admit that I snapped at her, in my disappointment, but honestly that’s thrice now that she’s killed, or nearly so,  an ally by too quickly assuming them a threat. She might have been off this planet and on her way a month ago, if she’d been just a little more cautious before swinging that glaive about. But, I’m getting ahead of myself.
She seemed contrite about what had happened to Hallbjörn and what had nearly happened to us, and sincere enough about it, I suppose. The others heard us conversing and came to join us, and we learned that she’s not from the prime material plane at all, but from the elemental plane of air, and had traveled through a series of wormholes that had spat her and her ship out too close to Nosirion-1 to avoid crashing into it. I’ll have to remember to ask Loraine, or perhaps Hiuda since Mir would have had a better vantage over the planet itself and the space around it, if anyone heard or saw anything, it seems like a wormhole opening up and a ship crashing down ought to have drawn some sort of notice, but no one’s mentioned anything strange to us, beyond Hallbjörn’s disappearance.
We made our introductions with the woman, who’s got a name that’s as much of a mouthful as mine but told us to call her Niko for the ease of it, and who it seems is a paladin of Reorx who’s been cast out of her order (for what seems to me to have been a well-intentioned mistake, honestly), and once those had been done with our attention turned to the hawk that we had seen wheeling about in the distance, and that had led us to this woman in the first place, for I’d been hopeful that it might have been Hallbjörn’s hawk companion, Nalira, and that she might lead us to him. I was leery of scaring her off at this point, though, especially with the news that Hallbjörn was dead, but between Pika’s ability to speak with small animals and Elyn’s assistance, they were able to coax her down and talk with her. She was Nalira after all, and had been there keeping watch over Hallbjörn’s grave all this time, which broke my heart right in two. Elyn wanted to send her as a courier of sorts back to the town, which seemed to me a somewhat callous intent for an animal clearly still mourning the loss of its companion. I was more concerned with convincing the poor thing to move on. I don’t know what sort of life a companion without its ranger might want, but it seemed to me that standing watch over a gravesite was a poor way to spend it. In any case, we weren’t able to convince Nalira to move on for either purpose, because she was unwilling to leave Hallbjörn behind in a plain, unmarked grave in the middle of the wilderness. So we asked Niko to show us to where she had buried him, and while she had done a decent job of ensuring that none of the local wildlife might dig him up for an easy supper, there was no gravestone to mark it. None of us were entirely sure what a proper burial for a dwarf might be, and we were limited in what we had at hand for one anyway, but it was an easy enough task to carve his name into a rock and lay it at the grave’s head, and once we’d done so Nalira seemed content enough to join us. I don’t know what will become of her, if she’ll want to return to the rangers of the Silver Tree, or stay with the scientists here on Nosirion-1, or if she’ll prefer to leave civilization behind her and go live out the rest of her life here in the unexplored places of this planet, but at least it won’t be a life spent tethered by grief to the place where her companion was slain.
We decided to set up camp there for the night, and leave in the morning with a full day still ahead of us, but our sleep was disturbed in the night by Elyn’s scream. When I saw what it was that had startled her, though, I’ll admit I gave a little shriek myself, for it was an enormous spider, at least twice the size of any of us. Between the four of us, though, we were able to kill it, and while I can’t say I slept particularly easy after that, at least I did sleep.
You’ll remember that I asked Pika if she could teach me to speak with animals the way she can, and I’ve been practicing what she taught me whenever I find the chance, though it had been somewhat fruitless so far. I wasn’t able to speak with Nalira, and had to direct all my questions through Pika, but I suppose it’s like what you told me once, Cylla, when I grew frustrated with my own lack at weapons practice. Do you remember what you said? It was years and years ago, but it’s stuck with me all this time. You said that practice is good and useful even when it seems I’m accomplishing nothing, that learning what doesn’t work is still an important lesson for the body, to help it figure out what does. And I think it must be the very same in this, too, and I seem to have come around a corner in it, for this morning, to my complete shock and delight, I found myself able to converse with Squirt! I’m sure you can imagine the heights of my joy. It’s strange, though, because when I first learned Pika could speak with animals, back on the Hammer of Antas, I asked her if she could speak with Squirt in my stead but she said no, that he was too large and she could only speak with the smaller animals. Perhaps the reason I’m able to do what she cannot is simply due to the amount of time I’ve spent with him?
In any case, whatever the reason, I couldn’t be more glad for it. I’m afraid I neglected my companions entirely for him while we sought ought the second sensor. Elyn found this one, and pocketed it, and as we continued on toward the third we encountered a pack of hyenas that gave us a nasty fight. Pika nearly went down this time, too, and Elyn took a nasty bite, but it turns out that Niko is a boon to have at our side, now that she’s swinging her glaive at enemies and not the heads of those unfortunate enough to startle her, and I, for one, was glad to have her fighting at our side. And Squirt, who usually blinks away from any threat (and honestly, who can blame him after that displacer beast!), this time ran right into the fray and bit one of the hyenas right back. It made my heart so glad to see him coming into his own and becoming the fierce hunting dog the fey bred him to be. I wish the Queen of Air and Darkness could have seen him, she’d have taken back everything she said about him being small and wounded and too weak for her service, and you can tell her I said that the next time you see her.
On second thought, maybe don’t. I think I’d bite her myself, if she tried to take him from me.
We’re packing up from our lunch now and getting ready to continue on our way to the last of the sensors, so I must end this here. I’ll send this as soon as we’re back in range of the signal, I promise. I hope you’re both well, and I’ll write again as soon as I have the chance to.
All my love,
Maliah

What does a craftsman-style home look like? This is a beautiful and highly balanced approach to home interior design that most professionals in the field feel truly happy about. It is warm, welcoming and inviting. It focuses on fine details and impeccable executions. It’s the style you should choose if you want to turn your apartment into a real, cosy home.
So, what exactly does craftsman interior design entail? Here are some of the most outstanding and distinctive characteristics of the style.
The Origins of Craftsman Interior Design
Craftsman interior design relies on a lot of exquisite woodwork, custom cabinetry and the use of natural materials that can be turned into original pieces.
It’s the exact opposite of the mass-manufactured and readily accessible commercial decors of today.
Craftsman-style homes were popularised for the first time in the early 1900s. Leaders of the arts and crafts movement like Gustav Stickley and William Morris were also responsible for the introduction of this interior design style.
In those original years, a craftsman interior referred to home design that was practical, executed in harmony with nature and focused on locally-available materials.
Today, the craftsman interior design style is still based on many of those early elements. It employs simple shapes, a lot of wood, exposed joints, stylised fabrics depicting natural scenes (florals, animals, etc.,) and limited but well-executed ornamentation.
Craftsman Homes Today
The popularity of craftsman homes continues being high today because of their practical appeal.
Craftsman homes are clean and functional without being minimalist and completely sterile. This style maintains personality and warmth, without going in the realm of rustic or boho home décor executions.
In essence, craftsman interior designs bring the best of both worlds (modern and traditional) together.
The other aspect of craftsman interior design that appeals to many Singapore home owners is its originality.
Many of the pieces that a Singapore interior design company executing such a project will order are going to be custom-made. Hence, no two craftsman interior designs are similar. They carry a distinctive personality, they embody the spirit of the space and the views of the homeowner.
Defining Craftsman Interior Design Elements
We have mentioned some of the distinctive elements of craftsman decors already. Still, there are several other defining characteristics that deserve to be outlined.
Apart from wood, there are other materials that can be displayed prominently in a craftsman home. These include glass, stone, all kinds of metals, ceramic tiles and solid pieces of straight-lined furniture.
An interior executed in this style could feature a couple of elements like window seats, nooks and crannies equipped with functional elements, built-in smart storage solutions (hidden or folding shelves), panelled walls, open floor plans and columns or movable panels that define spaces.
Speaking of furniture, all of the pieces look prominent and they feature geometric shapes. Ornamentation is minimal, allowing the richness and the colour of the wood to shine through. Cast iron or other metal elements could be utilised as reinforcement or a bit of decorative work.
Upholstery isn’t very typical in the realm of craftsman interiors. Instead, leather and felt or suede are the preferred materials.
Light, Colour and Other Craftsman Elements
All of the colours used to execute a craftsman home are nature-inspired.
There’s the blue of the ocean, the green of the grass, orange and yellow coming from autumn leaves, brown, beige, pink and red.
Whenever dark tones are prominent, these can be lightened up a bit through the use of gold or other metallic. Shimmering effects and stained glass could be incorporated in the overall concept, giving it a bit of brightness and saturation.
As far as lights go, these are simple and functional. Fixtures aren’t excessively ornate – don’t expect to see a massive crystal chandelier into a craftsman home. Instead, look for brass or copper hammered fixtures.
Lamps are typically study and accent lights are utilised in functional areas (like above the kitchen countertop, for example). Heavy metal bases for freestanding lamps and geometric shape decorations are quite common for lights created during the peak of the craftsman era. Some of these authentic fixtures (just like some original furniture) are still available for purchase today.
All elements of the design in the realm of craftsman homes can be customised and enhanced to address the specifics of the space.
Storage areas hidden behind the wall panelling allow for order and effortless decluttering. Pull-out cabinets in the kitchen simplify the access to condiments, herbs and the other essentials required to prepare a tasty meal. Bedroom closets are integrated through the use of sliding doors that don’t occupy any space and allow the room to “breathe.”
These are just a few examples of custom-made solutions for craftsman homes in Singapore.
If you have a specific vision for your flat but you struggle finding the right furniture and home décor pieces in a store, a craftsman execution may be the right way to go.
It gives you the freedom to explore utilitarian, practical options or to even conceptualise your own furniture. And while most worry about the cost of custom-made solutions, these can prove to be more affordable and capable of producing a higher return on investment than mass manufactured items.
Home Guide knows what it takes to introduce all of the essential craftsman home elements while still keeping the concept fresh and exciting.

Learnable Magic
All of the below-listed categories can be learnt by any Versipellis without any exception. It's possible to lack the talent for one of those, but it will never be impossible for an individual to learn at least the basics of it. Most Versipelles focus on 2-3 connected categories during their life to use them in their full form.
Tumblr media
III. I. Abacomancy One of the oldest abilities as the use of the Versipellis ancestors was documented even before Ezriel appeared - which counts back to 500.000 AR. Abacomancy is the art of receiving an answer or a small glance at the future from supernatural forces through interpreting patterns in sand, dust and ashes. In some cases, the user also drops bigger objects such as bones or teeth. No matter the material, the object is dropped on a flat surface and interpreted. III. II. Alchemy Even though Alchemy might be the most taken subject during elementary teachings, only a few individuals focus on this topic as it is very big and also difficult to fully understand. Often also called 'meta-chemistry', it can be closely linked to the subject of science as it focuses the nature of different substances and their reaction to each other. Alchemy in the modern world mostly focuses on the search for materials which have the ability to turn worthless and cheap matters into valuable substances such as gold and silver. Next to this, it's also often used to understand the Spirit World better as many reactions are able to give a short glimpse into said dimension - and even more as the results from Akumenos's research show. Alchemy is a big science for itself and can be quite dangerous in case of mistakes. III. III. Arcane Magic This category is basically elementally neutral energy which can be used as an offensive or defensive force. As Arcane is seen as completely neutral, it is neither weak nor strong against any other type of active magic which can be used in fights. It's also quite often the first category young children learn as it's quite easy to control and can't be manipulated into backfiring during training. III. IV. Card Magic Formerly thought to be a blessing, Card Magic is still quite rare among Athusians - probably due to the need of a full set of cards or at least the one of a card symbol of choice, additional to the required knowledge about the interpretation and meaning of symbols. It is still discussed if this category is really one on its own or just a clever link between hypnosis and psychokinesis; reports suggest that the first option is the case. Next to being able to harden cards with induced energy, moving them with the sheer power of will and simple card tricks, the user is also able to force an opponent into hypnosis, even if this requires a lot of luck or psychological knowledge. This hypnosis can only be pulled through if the correct card is literally pinned to the opponent while the user focuses all of their energy on this one card which usually causes all other cards to either disappear back into their storage (in the case of an experienced user) or just drop to the ground. If the correct card is chosen, the opponent will start to dissociate and fall into so-called 'empty state' in which they are completely separated from their memory and life experiences but take on the identity of the card. This state can last between 5 seconds up to multiple days, depending on how skilled the caster is and how much energy they use for this. III. V. Catoptromancy Related to other forms of divination, Catoptromancy is the art of using mirrors to question supernatural forces or to get a glimpse into the future. As those hints are very vague, it's usually up to Oracles to interpret the results. These hints might come in form of a trick of the light, an unusual reflection or rippling on the mirror's surface. III. VI. Corrupted Magic Rather being the name of a family of magic than a type on its own, Corrupted Magic is known to have many different categories and uses - and almost all of them are equally dangerous to use. The usage of these powers will always lead to irreparable damage to the caster and their environment; what kind of hazards exactly are caused by this depends on the sub-category. There is no known way to prevent this since as soon as the first spell was cast, the progress can't be stopped, even if it's not used again after this. The only being known to be able to handle this ability without carrying away damage is the goddess Sirath. Necromancy was also considered to be a sub-category of Corrupted Magic but proved itself to be a topic on its own. Corrupted Versipelles are also commonly known as 'Pestilentia' as they are known to bring death and sickness to those around them. Neither of these abilities can be mastered.    > Disease Magic A quite questionable category as it includes the ability to control diseases and parasites, including hazardous fungi. The alone presence of a so-called 'Pestilentia' draws flies to them, even if no scent of decay is in the air - it's probably the atmosphere around them. Disease Magic can't create new ailments, even if it's known to be able to drive the development of new pathogens forward. Pestilentia have a longer life expectancy and higher living quality than most corrupted individuals as they experience a full immunity to symptoms caused by their own bodies (such as fever) but still can infect themselves with their own powers. Most users show of rotting skin as many attract flesh-eating bacteria and necrosis. Blood poisoning and organ failure are the most common causes of death.    > Radiation Magic Also known by 'Fallout Manipulation' or just 'Fallout', Radiation Magic highly focuses on the control of alpha, beta and/or gamma rays which are produced by radioactive decay of atomic nuclei. This category is not often practised because as soon as the caster learnt it, they can't stop it anymore until they die. To be more precise, Radiation Magic is based on corrupting the Aether flowing through one's body to the degree of it starting to emit its own energy in the form of particles and rays. Due to this, the caster ends up suffering from a slow proceeding radiation poisoning, radiation damage and also ARS in the end. This is also the reason why Radiation Magic is seen as a last resort to learn as it is really damaging to both spell caster and nature. As the Versipellis emits it themselves, they also affect organisms in their surroundings. This type of magic was often used in wars as fatally injured soldiers were often sent back to the enemy after learning this kind of magic, poisoning them in the process. Big parts of Eleancia are still in a lockdown state and the use of this kind of magic is highly questionable to the point of being banned. The final hours of the individual are determined by their physical tier of energy. While low tiers suffer from a fatal case of Acute Radiation Syndrome, Tier IVs often emit so much energy that their own chromosomes start to break apart - resulting in a long drawn out and painful death if they aren't put out of their misery quickly by organ failure. III. VII. Crystallomancy Another form of divination and quite similar to Catoptromancy. Visions are achieved through setting oneself in a deep trance while gazing at a crystal of at least the size of a fist. Even though it would be possible to have a vision when using a small gemstone, it's easier to see and understand if it is seen on a bigger medium.  Crystallomancy is one of the most used methods by Oracles as it gives away the clearest visions. III. VIII. Culinary Magic Discovered by a cook who was overwhelmed by the amount of work he had to do and ran out of ingredients for a wedding meal. A culinary mage is able to create wonderful dishes out of almost nothing in a short amount of time with a great taste. Users of this category can also turn inedible materials or small rations into rich and tasty meals without harming anybody. Food can also acquire healing properties when prepared by a culinary mage. III. IX. Elemental Magic Next to arcane, elemental magic is the most basic categories in existence. While many mages prefer to learn and master the control of only one element, a few individuals wish to study more than a single one. All elements can be combined with each other. All of these have a maximal range of 10 meters.    > Air (Aerokinesis) Rarely chosen, but a powerful element after some practice as air is not visible to the naked eye if it doesn't carry dust or other small objects. Attacks and defences build up with Aerokinesis are transparent and usually can't be seen. Although this might be considered as a clear advantage, the big area needed to let attacks fully unfold their power always delivers leaves, grass or other small objects to make the gust visible. It's not possible to pull the air out of living creatures. Air is considered to be a stealthy element as it barely leaves any traces, can be hidden in the natural wind and is invisible.    > Earth (Terrakinesis) Related to strength, earth is the element of warriors and guards as its powers can be used as a defensive tool just as armour. Its name is slightly misleading though - Terrakinesis doesn't necessarily include dirt and earth, but rather stones and minerals. The weight of them isn't giving any limits as long as the stone is still connected to the ground and covers less than 5m³. If the stone breaks loose from its origin, the user loses the control over it. This allows the individual to quickly build walls of any thickness, let stone spikes shoot out of the ground or create caves in grim weather situations. Some users are even able to create gems and other valuable minerals to control them.    > Fire (Pyrokinesis) Often chosen, rarely understood. Fire is the only element which serves a purely offensive purpose - next to its rather minor use of giving warmth. Users of this element are able to create and control sparks, flames and ember, even without a substance to nourish it. The controllable amount of fire depends on the magical rank of the individual. Pyrokinesis also makes the user almost immune to heat and burn wounds, but long exposure will still sear the hair and skin - it just lowers the chance of suffering from third-degree burns to a minimum. Smoke is still toxic.    > Water (Hydrokinesis / Nephokinesis / Cyrokinesis) Due to its fluency in its state of matter, Hydrokinesis can be divided into three more subtypes which are taught each by each as every state has its own way of handling and uses. While most only learn one of them, some spend a lot of time to master all of them to be a recognized Nereid. These individuals are also able to fluently switch between each kinesis type by changing the state of the water. If Nepho- or Cyrokinesis are the only learnt category, ice or steam (humidity of around 50% at least due to weather; boiling water near the user is also possible) have to be present before the individual starts. Elemental control around water is a multifunctional tool as water is everywhere and can be used as a help to survive in the wilderness, as defence and also an offensive weapon. The maximal controllable amount is 100 litres in the liquid state. Blood isn't included in Hydrokinesis as its amount of particles makes it too thick. Same applies to heavily polluted water.    > Combinations Whether if combined by one user with multiple ability sets or a group, elemental magic offers a wide range of combination used in daily life and combat. Not all categories are compatible. Air + Earth = Control of small dust storms or stones carried by the wind. Air + Fire = Control of small fire tornados (rarely used as they often are out of control). Air + Water = Can create small storms, even tiny thunderstorms if done by several IV mages. Earth + Fire = Creates a small amount of lava which cools down extremely fast though. Earth + Water = Creates a huge pile of controllable mud. Not very useful outside of agriculture. Fire + Water = Substitution to Nephokinesis III. X. Extrasensory Perception Also known under the shorter name ESP, this ability describes the magically enhanced Sixth Sense which can help to detect energies, supernatural creatures or lingering danger. Individuals with at least an advanced rank in this category also show a high intuition towards emotional matters. The ability to project their own thoughts onto another being is also documented, but rare. III. XI. Green Magic While the magic category of tending to plants and mushrooms rather sounds quite peaceful, Green Mages are known to be quite dangerous if threatened in any way as it doesn't only describe the art of growing plants, but also everything about natural poisons. Next to being able to make plants move and grow to their will (such as letting roots snap out of the ground to wrap around another being), individuals with at least an advanced rank in this category are not affected by natural poisons found in plants. III. XII. Illusions This category can be divided into auditory and visual illusions which can be combined with any rank higher than high rank. The abilities of Illusion magic are pretty self-explanatory: Users are able to create either visual phantoms of objects and/or even living creatures or sounds (can either be simple noises such a door shutting or even a voice talking) after either getting into physical contact with the victim by touching them or owning a piece of them, such as nails or hair - this makes them invisible to any other person. These illusions grow in their quality and stability as the user improves rank-wise; as long as it is low or lower high rank, visual phantoms shatter as soon as they are touched while auditory tend to have static in the background or sound corrupted. III. XIII. Mind Control While any other categories in this list are learnable by mortals, Mind Control is exclusively for Demonicae Inferiae who are either taught by the original ones or take their place. The basics of Mind Control are simple; it's simply about putting impulsive thoughts into the head of the victim either until they do it or manipulating them to follow whatever the user wants them to do - as long as it stays in their learnt category. There are six known categories but all apart from Luxuria apparently died out during the Primal Wars - even this one only has two known users which makes Mind Control the rarest ability found in Athusia, even compared to blessings. Acedia - Latin for sloth - describes the ability to drain the victim of all energy and wishes to speak, move or do anything other than breathing while resting. Avaritia - Latin for greed - describes the ability to make the victim crave all kinds of goods - money, valuable objects, etc. Often makes the victim lie, steal and manipulate to get more and more. Invidia - Latin for envy - describes the ability to kindle hate towards others over their achievements, goods and life; this often makes the victim lash out to the point of injuring or even killing the person they project this onto. Gula - Latin for gluttony - describes the ability to force the everlasting feeling of gnawing hunger onto the victim, making the literally eat and eat until they die. Ira - Latin for wrath - describes the ability to make the victim highly aggressive and violent towards any provocation, no matter if it was meant to be. Luxuria - Latin for prodigality - is quite a misleading term as this category has two areas to influence: The need to spend money but also sexual desire. While first the first one is rarely used as it is rather destructive on a social level, the second option is often utilized to make the victim dependant on the caster - or to get something from the victim by earning their trust this way. III. XIV. Necromancy While lower ranks simply aim for the ability to communicate with deceased individuals to either get information or to force them to weaken living persons, high ranks have their main goal in the re-animation of corpses, producing revenants. This category is morally questionable as soon as it comes to manipulating the dead for their own use. Revenants aren't the person they were before their death, but rather an empty shell which is mobile until the decay will claim even this before ending their life a second time. This process can take up to 6 months. A necromancer can re-animate up to three corpses at the same time; in this state, these bodies are fully under the control of their master and will act to their will - which leads to even more controversial points. Necromancers are frowned upon as soon as it is known that they use their abilities this way. Revenants basically move until they are physically unable to do so - this can be achieved by a severed head, severing nerves or by cutting through muscles & tendons until they are immobile. These creatures survive for a short time when they are set on fire, can't drown and are immune to cold as long as it doesn't freeze them. Their main drive is either what their master tells them, but also the need for living meat to fill the void their placeholders left in the afterlife. When their master dies, so will the revenants. III. XV. Oceanic Magic Often confused with Hydrokinesis due to its vague name, Oceanic describes a magic category of a cult of Azaroth. Not much is known about this cult apart from one ritual which is also the only thing known about this category by the vast majority. Oceanic Magic heavily focuses on the Metamorphoseon, the ritual to shift into a creature which can survive underwater for the rest of their life. This can't be reversed. The ritual itself circles around the shifting individuum who has to travel to a specific small island near the underwater colony of the cult where they stand in the water of the sea while being watched by the leaders of the already shifted group. Chanting of an ancient language and the sacrifice of earthen figurines under the full moon will eventually make the individual morph into their new form. This is basically their regular appearance with their legs and replaced by an often vibrant fishtail of an existing species. The change also affects their equine form. After this, they can't breathe air anymore and are bound to live in the underwater society. What else is included in Oceanic Magic is a secret, but there are rumours about the ability to communicate with the creatures of the sea and a special bond to Azaroth himself. III. XVI. Palmistry Another form of divination, this Psychokinesis Psychological Magic Puppet Magic Spell Negation Switching

How To Become A Better Cook Quickly
It does, however, take a little skill! It's good to know how to cook, regardless of the reason you want to learn. Here are some nifty little tips that will have you creating delicious masterpieces in no time at all. Your spices and herbs should always be stored in a cool and dark place. Humidity, light and heat can cause your spices and herbs to lose their flavor. Herbs and ground spices usually retain their flavor up to a year. Whole spices, on the other hand, can still be bursting with flavor five years down the line. If they are stored properly, they will stay fresh longer.

You want to make certain you have the prep work done ahead of time. It is essential to have all prep work finished before it's time to begin cooking. Sometimes even when the prep work is done, the deadline for when the meal must be completed can still loom large and become stressful. Begin your meal preparations as soon as possible to avoid last minute stress. Make sure that you cut your meat extremely thin as well as on the bias for stir-fry. This technique is somewhat tricky and can take a little time. When you remove the meat from the freezer, it should be firm, not frozen. Slice across the meat's grain while holding the knife at a 45-degree angle. Spices should be stored in an area with little light and low temperatures, like a pantry. Storing spices in lighted areas or warm areas can reduce their length of freshness. When spices are stored in an adequately dark and cool area, they tend to retain their taste and shelf life for greater periods of time. Better tasting meals are the result of the ingredients you use, including the freshest spices possible.

Certain methods of preparing vegetables, such as boiling, can reduce their nutrients, due to the length of cooking time. Keep them healthy by choosing fast methods of cooking such as steaming or sauteing, or better yet, learn to love them raw. Are you going to cook with fresh basil? Take out a glass and put some fresh basil inside. Then, add water to the glass, immersing the stems in water. Put the basil on your counter and it will remain fresh for up to seven days! If you are sure to add fresh water, your basil will even form roots and become a plant. While the basil is alive and thriving, make sure you trim the leaves in order to progress the growth of the plant. You will have plenty of fresh basil on hand. When you do this, the mushroom will become absorbent and soak up the water. Wipe off each mushroom with a clean wet cloth to prepare them for cooking. If you cooked with a sauce, save the leftover sauce in an ice cube tray that you can freeze. When you need sauce for another meal, you already have individual portions, ready to grab and reheat in a pan. Nothing to worry about as the sauce will be fine even after it's been sitting in ice cube trays. When simmering or boiling vegetables, try adding chicken broth. Try cooking your veggies in chicken broth. It adds a nice flavor, and the veggies will not stick to the pan. There is not a lot of expense when buying chicken broth, and most grocers carry it. Take a look at the nutrition facts when you buy ingredients to cook with. A lot of ingredients that are common to cook with have hidden, unhealthy ingredients. You want to ensure that anything you buy is not high in sugar or salt because both can cause major health problems if eaten too much. Never cook with wine you haven't tried. If you use a kind of wine you've never tasted before, you may mess up the flavor of the dish you're working on. Look through your grocery store to find wines that are used specifically for cooking. You can make many preparations a day in advance to keep serving a family dinner from getting overwhelming. Cut up vegetables and make marinades or sauces before going to bed at night. With this done, you will have a major portion of the meal ready for the next step, which means less stress for you. If you are big on using spices and herbs, store them in a cool and dark place to preserve their flavor and freshness. When you store your herbs out on the kitchen counter, they will lose their flavor quickly and become stale. Organize your materials as best as possible, if you desire to prevent the hazards of burns in the kitchen. Just like with anything you do, the more organized you are, the more productive you will be. A cluttered, unorganized cooking area will leave you scrambling to find things while your food gets more and more "well done". You will end up burning things and throwing them away when simple organization would have allowed you to cook a wonderful dish! Make washing dishes part of your cooking routine. Keep a fresh sink of hot soapy water in one side of your sink and clear rinse water in the other. If you wash while you are cooking, the dishes and pots will be easier to scrub and you will save time on cleaning up after dinner. Plus, they will be immediately available to use again. Dab away excess moisture from ground meat before cooking it. It's never a bad idea to dry the surface of ground meats. Any moisture on the meat will be released as the meat cooks. The effect is, that it will sizzle away. This will cause your meat to be steamed rather than seared. Now that you have read up on the subject, it's time to practice! Take these hints and put them to great use by producing some amazingly tasty dishes. Even if you only decided to learn to cook because your in-laws were nagging you, you'll feel a sense of accomplishment once you have made something by yourself. It is true that there is some skill involved. The great dishes and the compliments you'll receive will be worth the hard work.
