Gareth is the baby of the group, always has been, always will be. He's a year younger than Jeff and Frankie, and four years younger than Eddie. He was behind in everything, but it just was how it was.

He was a drummer and they needed one. The fact that he was the best drummer in a 100 mile radius helped.

But because of them hitting the ground running the moment he graduated, he didn't really get to have much of a regular young adult life.

He didn't really have much of a rockstar one either.

He had three extremely overprotective big brothers constantly by his side making sure he didn't do anything dumb, but they also made sure he didn't do anything at all.

"Promised your mom we would watch out for you," Jeff said.

"Last thing we need is you getting involved with some girl and ruining the band," Frankie said.

"Don't rush it, man," Eddie said.

But Gareth was now 20 years old and had never even kissed a girl. Or a boy, he didn't know what he was into. How could he? None of them would leave him alone long enough in the bars he was technically too young to get into to try.

Tonight. He would find a way to shake them tonight. He'd find a girl in the crowd, he'd buy her a drink, and he'd hope that she'd at least be willing to check this one thing off his list.

If he was gonna be a rockstar, he should get to kiss someone.

They were playing a smaller venue tonight, opening for a band that was bigger than them in theory, but not in talent. Story of their lives.

Hopefully, everyone would be distracted by the main act to not pay attention if he slipped off.

He was dripping sweat, cursing the fact that these small venues never had decent ventilation or fans for them to cool off, and the stage lights were always too close, building up a furnace on the stage.

His drums were packed, his shirt rolled up to help him cool off the best he could while he sipped on water. He hadn't even gotten a beer tonight, a nervous flutter in his stomach that he didn't want to make worse with feeling bloated from the combination of hops and heat.

"Gare!" Jeff's voice interrupted his walk towards the bar.

Dammit.

"You wanna head out? We're all so fuckin' hot."

"Yeah, yeah, let me just grab another water. Feeling kinda lightheaded."

That was definitely not the right thing to say. Jeff's mouth turned down in a concerned frown.

"Well, let's get you outside then. You need some fresh air. Eddie!" Eddie yelled back in acknowledgement. "Get Gareth a water!"

"I'm okay, I can get it." He argued, desperate to let his plan work. "You guys head out, be there in a few."

"Like hell am I leaving you alone when you're not feeling good," Jeff wrapped his arm around his shoulders and started pulling him towards the door. "You gotta speak up sooner."

"Jeff. Please."

Something in his voice must have alerted Jeff to the seriousness of his plan because he quickly pulled his arm away.

"What's going on?"

"I just need to be alone for a bit. Please?" Gareth wasn't afraid to pull out the pout. The pout worked on his mom every time. It had to work now, too. "Just for a little bit?"

Jeff searched his face, probably trying to see if there was something he should be worried about.

"I'll distract them for 15 minutes. But that's all I can guarantee," he finally agreed. "Whatever it is you're planning, please be safe. Please."

"What the hell could I possibly get up to in 15 minutes?"

Jeff sighed. "Don't ever ask that question to Eddie or Frankie."

He walked away and Gareth watched as he convinced them both to walk outside, probably to get some fresh air. He probably didn't have to be that convincing.

God, it was so hot.

The bar area of the venue was crowded, a lot of people taking the break between sets to throw back a shot or chug a beer. He genuinely did just need a water, so he forced his way through the people and got the attention of the bartender.

"Not a fan of beer?" A woman in a black dress and leather jacket asked him. She was smiling, sipping on something that could be water, might be a vodka tonic. The lighting wasn't good enough to see bubbles.

"Not a fan of being hot," Gareth smiled.

"Awful confident of you."

Oh. Oh shit. Was she flirting with him?

"Trying something new tonight, I guess."

"Oh? Anything in particular?"

Gareth liked her smile, her eyes. She seemed a few years older than him, closer to Eddie's age.

"Well…I've never actually kissed anyone before," Gareth figured honesty was the best policy.

"Never?" She didn't believe him, but that was okay. She'd figure it out if she let him make a move.

"Never."

"Let's give it a go then."

So he did.

She leaned in, closed her eyes, and he was having his first kiss. He didn't know her name, he was surrounded by hundreds of people, and he was certain that stars were exploding behind his eyes.

She pulled away after a few seconds, smiling, winking, and walked away.

"Damn, she didn't even give you a name?" A guy to Gareth's left asked, watching as she walked away.

Gareth shook his head. "Didn't need it."

The guy touched his arm and smiled at him, much like the woman had before.

"I'm Evan. You're the drummer, right?"

"Sure am."

"You wanna have a kiss with someone you know the name of?" Evan asked.

Gareth wasn't about to pass up this opportunity, so he nodded.

When Evan kissed him, he saw fireworks.

Stars and fireworks.

"Wanna come outside?" Evan asked.

Gareth shook his head.

Firsts and seconds were enough for now.

Corpse had not slept for close to 50 hours by the time that they had started their latest month prior pre-planned plasmophobia session with Rae, Sykkunno and Toast, but it was like he was hyped up on sugar for the last hour or so and Y/n was really beginning to get worried. 

This was a tattletale sign of the huge crash her boyfriend was about to go through, and yet the stubborn man just would not step away from his computer.

She had tried everything, from luring him with pizza (to which he had snatched a few slices and had just retreated to his gaming room once more) to telling him that there was a fire in the kitchen (to which he replied was virtually impossible given how meticulous Y/n was in the kitchen) to faking an injury (which corpse called bullshit on without even looking at her).

It was getting really frustrating and she knew for a fact that the longer her boyfriend was going to wait this out, the worse he was going to feel.

And the worse he was going to act. 

He would never hurt anyone, ever. The man was the definition of a soft boi beyond his brain meltingly amazing voice. But when he was beyond bone dead tired like he was right now, he had the tendency to act mean, and the only person who had the capability of calming him down in the middle of the pandemic was Y/n, and she would have to hijack his stream. 

The stream that was filled with hundreds of thousands of people who didn’t even know that their precious Corpse was in a relationship with anyone. 

Would she have the chance to mute him before he went on his tired, angry, borderline crazy monologue? She would try, but probably not. 

Y/n had to bring out the big guns. 

Rae and Toast were pretty easy people to conspire with and were almost always down to do pranks and other shit that Y/n came up with, and always, always down to do whatever it took to get Corpse to take care of himself. 

Sykkuno though, bless him, the cutest, most clueless person Y/n had ever met. 

He was always very concerned for Corpse’s health but was the worst at going incognito. So Rae and Toast were the ones who used their code word (lights out) and had always been the ones who had the role of making sure Sykkuno knew what to do. 

“Aaaaaaaaaaanddd, lights out baby!” Rae screamed as she made her way past Sykkuno at the entrance of the house they were in at the moment, but Sykkuno, the precious little boy that he is, just watched Rae with a bewildered face, getting even more confused when Toast made his way past him as well, whispering “Lights out.” and moving back to the truck in the game. 

From inside, Corpse’s character was busy laughing at a joke he made about a picture in the wall and had not noticed the other two missing. He did notice though, when Sykkuno appeared near him to ask him what was up before convulsing and dropping to the floor. 

Corpse’s laugh was noticeably more manic now, getting a lot more high pitched and erratic. For a second, Sykkuno laughed with him, then when Corpse’s went on for too long, suddenly looked confused on his stream, turning to face the general vicinity he Corpse’s character was. 

So he spoke through their always open discord chat. “Uhh, Corpse? You okay there buddy?” 

The stubborn man just kept laughing, Y/n increasingly getting concerned as she watched all 4 player’s streams on different devices one room over. Rae and Toast were chatting about the pills in the truck, so as to not alarm Corpse of the lowkey distraction they were doing to finish the game easy (aka getting at least 3 of them killed), and then giving excuses to stop streaming and giving Y/n a chance to haul his ass to bed. 

Sykkuno on the other hand, was now (against all plans spoken about prior) continuing to talk to Corpse. 

“Corpse?” the timid man spoke once more, finally reaching the ever more manic Corpse. 

All of a sudden, an eerie silence fell around the two of them, settling for a few seconds before getting filled by a flat “Yea?” from Corpse. 

Y/n could almost hear the sentence that Sy would reply to that, and at that moment, she knew, they were fucked. 

With a quick “Fuckin shite” to both Rae and Toast’s chat, Y/n bounded over to Corpse’s office, hearing tail end of the question that was about to make Corpse’s brain go kaboom. 

“You sound tired man, maybe you should sleep for a bit?” 

She knew he only meant good. Sykkuno was just one of those guys that would never want to hurt anyone. She knew it, Corpse knew it, everyone knew it. 

But her secret boyfriend was sleep deprived and going batshit crazy because of it, and currently, his trigger word was the word Sleep.

Y/n would give poor Sy a viking funeral if she can’t stop this.

“I am not tire-” Corpse was pretty intimidating when he wanted to be, and I knew that that low voice of his would scare every single hitman in a 1000 mile radius when used in a booming, angry way. And the way his voice was escalating was sure to end in said booming, angry way.

Y/n sprinted into his recording room, only partially wincing at the horridly loud bang the door made when she wrenched it open to fling herself at her boyfriend. The world seemed to slow as she soared through the air, uncaring if she knocked things out of the way. 

Gotta make sure their baby Sy would never be at that end of Corpse’s fury. 

She partially landed on his lap, torso hanging off the side. It hurt as her ribs made contact on the armrest of his computer chair, but it stopped his tirade with a surprised “Ooof!” and knocked him away from his PC.

“Honey!! Don’t yell at Sy!” 

“Y/n???”

Oh shit. 

Of course Sykkuno had to yell out her name during a stream. She had bet Toast 200 dollars that Sy would be the one to drop her name, and it was high time she cashed in. 

Y/n fixed herself on Corpse’s lap, shoving his headphones off of him and forcing him into a hug. Of course he protested, but eventually relaxed in her grip, muttering about how his eyes and wrists hurt now but he promised to play with the OTV peeps and his insomnia hit him too hard these past few days. 

“Baby,” he whispered hoarsely, his grip tightening on her as well. It only took a moment for Y/n to realize that her boyfriend was shaking, trying not to fall apart. “It hurts.” 

She ran her fingers through his hair, putting a kiss on the top of his head as he relaxed even more. They had to move to a more comfortable space soon or else Corpse would fall asleep here and she would have to move him (which at 5 feet, is not very easy.) but he was relaxing and Y/n couldn’t make herself distract him from that. 

“I know babe, it’s okay. We’ll breathe through it. You can do it, I know you can.” Corpse would never fess up to crying, but the growing patch of tears on her sweater was evidence of the amount of pain that he was experiencing. 

His dedication was amazing, but a lot of the time he sacrificed his health for it. So as much as she didn’t want to hold him back, sometimes she really just had to step in and meddle to save him from himself.

They stayed like that for a while, Y/n occasionally having to coach him through his breathing, but overall, they were doing fine. 

Y/n smiled into his hair when he finally stopped shaking. “That’s it babe, you’re doing amazing.” she whispered, moving to get off his lap. She wasn’t the lightest person despite her shortness, her curves never letting her be skinny, so she was sure that her sitting on his lap was making his legs go numb. Corpse, on the other hand, only held on tighter, basically turning into a koala at this point. 

“Corpse, Honey, your legs are gonna go numb, babe.” she giggled. She tried to put him at arm’s length, but her apparently octopus boyfriend had planned to never let her go. 

“No.” he mumbled, pressing his face ever tighter into her sweater, making her giggle, in turn, making him smile. 

Eventually, he detached his face from her sweater and peeked up at his girlfriend, the visual of his tousled hair, pout, one sparkling eye and the other now only partially covered by his falling eyepatch, but both with smudged eyeliner and mirth, made her melt.  “Don’t go, please?” Y/n giggled at him. “I’m not gonna leave babe, I just gotta get off your lap before I make your legs undergo hypoxia.” 

“I’d let them cut off my legs if it meant having you here forever.” if she hadn’t already fallen in love with this man, she would say that this was the moment that she fell in love with him. But falling in love with him over and over again was probably something that she would never stop doing, even if Corpse ever decided to not love her back one day. 

They were jolted out of their happy little bubble when they heard a loud screech coming from his headphones making a sound more akin to blasting speakers than headphones, which had apparently fallen just beside them on the table instead of the floor like Y/n anticipated. “STOP YOUR LOVING AND GO TO SLEEP CORPSE!” Rae screeched, making the both of them laugh out loud, but one look at his screen stopped them at their tracks.

Corpse was miraculously still alive in game, Rae’s character moving back and forth in front of his. 

Rae… was streaming, right? 

Oh shit numero dos. 

One look at the chat showed that they had just outed themselves. The sappy couple making everyone watching go absolutely bonkers at the chat.

Both parties were staring wide eyed at the screens. Even with slow mode on, the chat was going a hundred miles per hour and all they were seeing were screaming chats in all caps zooming up. 

For a second Y/n just kept staring quietly, and then the first giggle escaped her and soon, both of them were a giggling pile of sweaters and limbs on Corpse’s computer chair, not even trying to stop their antics. Rae screamed another “YOU’RE BOTH CUTE AND WE ALL KNOW IT STOP AND SLEEP!!” 

The laughter seemed endless. 

It was the sound of Y/n’s phone ringing from the other room that finally got her up from the warm confines of Corpse’s lap. But before she left, she was going to make sure that Corpse was not just going to continue streaming in her absence. 

“Sooo….” Y/n turned them over so that she was facing the screen and not him, talking directly into the mic as she scrambled for the headphones she had shoved off of his head. “Yes Corpse Husband has a Corpse wife and she’s now taking him back to their coffins because the hubby is a stubborn piece of shit and has not slept in more than 50 hours.” 

The casual information drop made the chat go even crazier, people now freaking out about her, trying to find out who she was, what she did, when and where they met, stuff like that. “I’ll see what I can do to answer your questions, you simps. But I gotta knock him out for now, and I promise you won’t be left hanging.” 

She felt him wrap his arms around her waist once more, feeling him press his face tightly against her back. “Baby,” he started to say, but Y/n cut him off with a few pats to wherever she could reach behind her.

“Sorry, but the jackass is now cut off from the mic and shall be cut off until he sleeps, so I shall be the one to say, good day to you sirs and madams, he shall see you on the next one! Bye!!!!” 

Then a pause, and a quietly frustrated “Hun, how do you turn it off??”

The chat was flooded with variations of “She’s so cute!!” and as tempted as he was to keep it going for a bit, he knew that it would upset and worry his adorable girlfriend to do so. 

So from his vantage point, he just mumbled a quick “Bye!” before cutting off stream. Normally, he would stay and read superchats and see how many new members he had gained, but this time, his tiny, but determined girlfriend was dead set on getting him to chill his ass out. 

And he let you.

He watched as you dragged him off to bed, tucking him in all the fluffy blankets you’d gotten for his comfort, smiled as you eagerly burrowed yourself under the fluff with him, sighed contentedly as your warmth surrounded him as you cuddled into him. 

He basked in your presence as he held you back just as tight, feeling you plant a kiss in his hair and smile as he relaxed ever more. From across the room, the mirror reflected the image of the two of you, touching the deepest recesses of the soul he would never claim to have. 

And as he drifted off, he watched as you glowed in the streaks of the fading afternoon sun, peeking through their heavy curtains, he thought:

BnHA Chapter 246: Plot Whiplash

Previously on BnHA: Hawks handed Endeavor a copy of Re-Destro’s NYT bestseller and was all “ಠ_ಠ READ THIS!!” He then flew off back to the PLF and was all “hey guys just got back from handing out free copies of Destro’s book to everyone in a 1000-mile radius, which absolutely nobody asked me to do, well anyways you can thank me later” and they were all “SWEET.” Back at the Endeavor HQ, Bakugou got all fired up to BUST SOME HEADS but Endeavor’s sidekicks were all “WAIT FOR THE PLOT YOUNG MAN.” Meanwhile in his office, Endeavor discovered a secret code in the book Hawks gave him, which basically read “HEY WHAT’S UP THE LEAGUE HAS TAKEN OVER THE MLA AND HAS AN ARMY OF 100,000 PEOPLE” and Endeavor was like “!!!!” And then we cut to the League and Toga was all “IN FOUR MONTHS TOMURA IS BLOWING THIS SHIT TO KINGDOM COME” and then the chapter just ended. Sometimes it be like that.

Today on BnHA: Tomura sits down with Ujiko who monologues a bit about Quirk Singularity and then starts some sort of quirk-upgrading process which will apparently take four months to fully set in. And also he’s like “oh btw let me tell you about One for All” so THAT’S A THING NOW, GREAT. We then cut back and forth between Endeavor and Hawks, who both somehow come to the weird conclusion that THE INTERNS ARE OUR ONLY HOPE NOW using logic that is hard to explain on account of THERE ACTUALLY ISN’T ANY LOGIC BEHIND IT, SHHH. But anyway, so Endeavor figures out the rest of Hawks’s message and he knows that Hawks is trying to figure out what the League is up to, and something something that’s why the internships are so important. Like, I get that the Terrible Trio are future legends in the making, but these guys are seriously like “well okay let’s just go ahead and rest all our hopes on them” out of the blue, and Hawks has this big monologue about how “THINGS WON’T GO ACCORDING TO YOUR PLAN, VILLAINS” and okay then!! And then the last two pages are basically just DID SOMEBODY ORDER SOME HYPE with more shit going on than I can possibly sum up so I won’t even try lol. But damn.

(All comments are my unspoiled reactions from my initial readthrough of the chapter. I did a quick edit for grammar and clarity afterward, and added a few ETAs in the process, but aside from that there are no changes.)

I really need the anime team to step up and give Ochako and Tsuyu some more screentime in the Basement Arc since the manga did not do them justice. there’s only like a 20% chance of that happening, which is depressing, but it’s 2019 and the winds are slowly changing, albeit at a geriatric pace. so I’ll allow myself to have some hope. you never know

hello I love everything about this. the colors, the focus on our best girls, Deku’s bizarre-yet-awesome assorted sci-fi accessories (Deku do those headphones let you communicate with space or what), and of course, the five million TVs in the background which for some reason all appear to be from the 70s. all of this to remind us to TUNE IN TOMORROW FOR THE LONG-AWAITED SEASON 4 DEBUT. I will definitely tune in! the first episode is just gonna be the usual half filler/half clip show, but honestly season 3 was so good that I could sit through a whole hour of nothing but highlights and still be thoroughly entertained

anyway let’s move on because there are GAMES AFOOT, and we’re hopefully about to learn which direction this arc will be headed in!

so does anyone else get a chill up their spine every time Ujiko makes an appearance, or is that just me? like, god. he may honestly be even creepier than AFO. he’s just completely soulless, this guy. he’s got like this Mengele vibe to him (though that may be kinda dicey to compare horrific real-life atrocities to fictional ones in a shounen manga, but I’m just trying to explain why I find him so disturbing) and it really freaks me the hell out, ngl. anyways so him wearing a surgical mask and standing in front of this weird examination chair is pretty much the last thing I need right now. go away Ujiko

so Tomura is all “I want it cuz you promised, so pay up jackass”, and like. fair, though

I really like this new art style Horikoshi’s been using for him since his Awakening. kinda curious how it’s going to translate to the anime, or even to a color spread. but at the very least in black and white it looks siiiiick

that is a nice parallel between him and Deku there, though. now I’m craving some Symbolic Artwork of them standing back to back each holding out their scarred right arms. maybe with their respective mentors in the background. here at BnHA we prefer our parallels nice and dramatic

anyway so here’s a brief summary I just wrote up of The Past Six Months of BnHA:

Deku: [gets a new quirk]

everyone: bruh. Horikoshi really out here giving Deku AFO Powers while Tomura just sits around starving to death on a couch. what the heck

Horikoshi: [powers up Tomura to the point where he can destroy anything just by it being in contact with something that Tomura happens to be touching] [has Tomura use this power to level an entire city]

everyone: -- oh. okay, you know what, never mind --

Horikoshi: [gives Tomura an army of 100,000 people] [also gives him command of 11 extremely lethal and nigh-unstoppable killing machines, just one of which was almost enough to take out the number one hero, LITERALLY THE STRONGEST GUY THE GOOD GUYS CURRENTLY HAVE IN RESERVE]

everyone: okay we’re sorry we get it you can sto --

Horikoshi: APOCALYPSE IN FOUR MONTHS!!!

everyone: WE GET IT WE’RE SORRY PLEASE

Horikoshi: [GIVES TOMURA ANOTHER POWER-UP]

Saturday 3rd June Tashkent to Moscow Train 005Ф 'The Ozbekistan' Departs 18.50 (Sat) Arrives 11.15 (Tue) 65 hours 35mins

Just 20 minutes after departing from Tashkent we were at the border with Kazakhstan and 2 hours of border guard checks on either side awaited us. As regulars on cross border railway journeys, we knew to make sure we used the toilet in that initial 20 mins, as the toilet doors on the train are locked shut until the border checks are done. It's also a wise move to pop some diarrhoea tabs before boarding, to shore yourself up if your bowels have been irritated by the local tap water, again.

The train carriage had obviously been left out in the open to roast in the Tashkent sun all day before departing, as it was swelteringly hot on board, making for an uncomfortable 4 hours in our 2 bed compartment. We had decided to treat ourselves to a first class ticket on this long 3315km leg of the journey, but there were little 'first class' luxuries about it, just the comfort of not having to share our space with any snorers. 'The Ozbekistan' train is a really old rattler and quite literally everything on it rattles. After leaving the Kazakh border we made our beds and tried to cool down with the window wide open letting in a welcome breeze, but trying to sleep was a bit of a torture, with the ever more apparent squeaking of door latches and creaking of a lose shelving unit being a constant annoyance.

The first full day, without any border crossings to delay the journey, we were able to settle into train life. For breakfast we had porridge oats we'd bought with us, soaked in the boiling water from the furnace at the end of every carriage, topped with raisins and almonds. Then you just sit back, read a bit, look out the window at the never ending Kazakh steppe, go for a walk up and down the carriage, have a tea break with some biscuits and generally just pass the time till lunch. Lunch was instant noodles with bread, and some eggs we had boiled before the journey. Break the eggs up and sprinkle in the noodles, for an egg fried noodle effect. Save a bit of bread for the end, to dip in the left over soup. After, sup on some cheap Uzbek general lager and slowly doze off for a well earned afternoon nap.... Heaven!

We had agreed before the journey that for dinner we would treat ourselves to a meal out at the restaurant carriage. Only a couple of carriages down from us, we strolled over in our best evening dress, got a window seat and ordered two Plov, a salad and some bread which went down a treat. The setting sun shone on our faces, that beautiful slow train rocking motion serenaded us as we gazed out the window on the dusty Kazakh plains and pondered  whether to order afters. We opted for vodka and biscuits back at our sleeping quarters, hoping the vodka would knock us out for an uninterrupted nights sleep. It did the trick, but we were rudely awoken at 4am by the conductor warning us we were approaching the Russian border.

Did we read the timetable wrong? It turns out the time was actually 5am. When we crossed from Uzbekistan into Kazakstan on the first night, even though we were traveling back in a westerly direction, the clocks had gone forward! A message to the Central Asian governments: you all need to sit down together and sort out your clocks, you have to at least try and follow the conventional laws of longitude. Anyway, we crossed into Russia without any problems, some tame looking sniffer dogs rushed through the carriages, probably more interested in getting to the third class sections towards the back. The clocks then went back 2 hours in one move from Kazakhstan to Russia.

The second full day on the train was very similar to the first. It was now much greener and a little cooler outside, much more pleasant temperatures to relax in, so our Uzbek train guards decided to whack up the heating and turn the carriage into a sauna. Pissed off with this, I managed to find the switch in the guards room, and when she was outside having a fag break in the little open section between the carriages, I would go in and flick the switch off, a great game to help pass the time. We eventually settled down and drank more beer, sipped on more vodka and dozed off to sleep whilst watching downloaded Netflix docs.

Walking to our Moscow hostel on the Tuesday lunchtime, we immediately felt a sense of sadness that we were no longer in the less orderly world of central asia. The timed countdown pedestrian crossings, the western fast food chains, the tall glass financial hq buildings, the grim moody faces of people rushing to get to meetings.... we were back in the 'developed' world.

We had tickets for a ballet performance at the Bolshoi theatre on our second night in the capital. I'd not been to a ballet before, and we were both really excited to be able to watch a show at such a historic venue. In 1918 Vladimir Lenin insisted on demolishing the place. He said that opera was a bourgeois art, it cost too much, and that the performers were arrogant and wanted only money. Luckily, Joseph Stalin was a bit of a culture vulture, and convinced him that they could have arts for the masses in the Soviet Union and he changed Lenin's mind. He loved opera and ballet, and would attend performances regularly. And here we were, a few decades on, attending the very same venue. I doubt Jo was in the cheap seats at the very back, but you can still feel that spooky historical presence when sat in the dim lit grandeur of the interior. The performance itself was entertaining enough, I'm just glad we read the outline of the play beforehand, not sure I would have known what was going on otherwise.

Saturday 10th June Moscow to Suzdal Bus 904 Departs 12.00 Arrived 18.50

Bank Holiday weekend in Russia, and like most Russians, we wanted a break from the city, so with the weather set fair, we headed out to our 'dacha' in the countryside. The beautiful old town of Suzdal was our choice of the many 'Golden Ring' destinations on offer, located on a roughly 100 mile radius of Moscow. We made the mistake of opting for a cheap bus all the way, expecting it to take 4 hours, it took 7! The bank holiday get away traffic from Moscow was ten times worse than that you see on the M25 back in the UK, and the never ending roadworks didn't help. Moscow is gearing up for the world cup next year and the whole city is a bit of a construction site, with road modernisation plans in full swing.

Arriving in Suzdal a bit drained from the sluggish bus journey, we were pleased to arrive at our 'Dacha'.  'Patchwork Hostel' was possibly the cleanest place either of us had ever stayed in. The well equipped kitchen allowed us to cook up some cheap home made meals, and to prepare picnics for days out in the picturesque countryside. A bit sick of walking after 8 weeks of sightseeing, we were able to rent bikes and ride for miles along country lanes without any traffic to disturb us.

Suzdal itself is home to several Unesco world heritage protected orthodox monasteries, dating back over 1000 years. We popped into one of the gold domed cathedrals for Sunday mass, the priest blessing us by splashing holy water over everyone as he chanted prayers in his deep russian voice with the nuns on backing vocals. Next to the church was a little canteen run by the Nuns where we purchased some cabbage soup and cabbage filled bread to eat, while we pondered over what the priest had to say about how better to go about our lives in the week ahead. A church canteen is a great idea for struggling parishes back home. I for one would certainly be more inclined to attend mass if you could get some good cheap comfort food straight after.

Tuesday 13th June Suzdal to Vladimir Bus 159 (40 mins) Vladimir to Moscow Marashutka 4 hours

We had been blessed with blue skies for the whole of the bank holiday weekend in Suzdal, but it was a grey wet morning for our departure back to Moscow. After a short ride on the 159 bus to Vladimir, we'd hoped to get a local 'Elektrika' suburban train back to Moscow, but there was a 4 hour gap in the timetable which would have meant a cold damp wait in Vladimir. A Ukrainian fella, who had lived and worked in New York for several years, befriended us and explained he would be getting in a Marashutka back to Moscow. After using them a fair bit in Central Asia, we hadn't planned on seeing them in use in Russia. They work to the same unofficial schedule as the central asian Marashutkas, lots of 10-15 seater transit vans lined up in a car park, all waiting till they are completely full up before departing to various destinations. At only 500 rubles we saved ourself some cash and some time, as it got us back to Moscow in 4 hours. This gave us plenty of time for a little tour of the Moscow metro and some of the grand architecture at the 'Palaces for the People' stations.

Wednesday 14th June Moscow to Leningrad (St Petersburg) High Speed 'Sapsan' Train: 768aa Departs 13.40 Arrives 17.35

We were now getting a taste for the usual bleak grey Russian summers some of the locals had warned us about. The rain was coming down quite heavy as we tried one last time to visit Lenin's Mausoleum, which had been closed on our last attempt a few days earlier. It was still closed! They must have been touching up his makeup, and Lo was quite disappointed to miss out on paying her respects to the great man, our last chance to do so as we had a train to catch to the city named after him, Leningrad.

Leningradski  station in Moscow was fairly busy, but it didn't take too long to get through the security bag checks. The high speed 'Sapsan' (Russian for Falcon) service, like the Uzbek duck and the Chinese bullet, had a really comfortable air conditioned spacious lay out, with ample leg room at our airline style seats. Also a free sandwich, with a cup of tea and biscuits delivered to our laps!

The sun was shining in Leningrad and we were able to take a late night stroll under the 'white night' skies along the canal and river banks in the centre of town.  The sun goes down around 11pm, but at this time of year it never goes down far enough for it to get completely dark and at 2am it is starting to rise again, a bit of hinderance to a good nights sleep when your hostel doesn't have proper curtains.

I reckon this city will be the pick of the World Cup venues next year. A huge park leads up to the spaceship like St Petersburg arena, with fun fair rides, food outlets and bars a plenty. Also, in the town centre itself, we visited one of the 'fan parks' that had been set up for this years warm up confederations cup tournament. It is positioned right next the impressive 'Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood' which is some backdrop for a big screen showing football when basking in the June sunshine. Don't be worried about the scare stories in the western media, the Russian hospitality is second to none, just drink vodka with them and be happy.  Also, this World Cup will offer long distance travelling between host cities like no other. Just imagine the fun to be had on a 26 hour train for a quarter final between Ireland and England in Yekaterinburg....

To get back to our in depth look at Russian Culture and the arts scene, we had a full 8 hour day of walking around the massive Winter Palace and its Hermitage Arts Museum, which boasts a greedy amount of work from the worlds best known painters. Just staring at the interior of the building itself is enough to keep you occupied, let alone the Van Gogh's and Matisse's on show. Catherine the Greats former residence was the seat of power for the Tsars from the 18th century onwards, and whatever your views on what happened post 1917, you have to agree with what one guest had written in the museums guest comments book "the revolution needed to happen!" Gold dripping from every staircase, ridiculously big chandeliers, huge grand ball rooms.... it just wasn't going to win favour with the starving masses on the streets outside. To the Bolsheviks credit, after looting the wine cellar and the ensuing hangover that followed, they managed to maintain the interior and save the artworks and opened the building up to public as a museum which is how it has remained ever since.

We got hold of some cheap tickets for The Mariinsky theatre, and a Saturday afternoon matinee performance of the Igor Stravinsky classic 'The Firebird'(I know, listen to me!). Again, like at the Bolshoi, we were sat up in the gods, but the view was still good, and being so far back you can stand up without bothering anyone behind you, kind of like at the back of the Cold Blow Lane end but without the Tourette's  sufferers stood next to you.  I began pondering some more comparisons with football.  Back before the Bolshoi performance in Moscow, it was a Tuesday night, me and Lo, were getting tanked up on a few homemade vodka, pomegranate and soda water cocktails before 'the match'.  This time around it was a Saturday afternoon, we had a fry up for breakfast, you get to the theatre(the ground) you drink more alcoholic beverages surrounded by others and the hum of anticipation of what's gonna happen on the stage (the pitch) is deafening. Some people are clearly only there to get pissed up with their mates, they have no interest in the beautiful game(ballet) whatsoever. Plenty of geezers dressed up in designer gear showing off their macho image, what do they care about the new directors interpretation of Stravinsky (in football: the new managers use of the diamond formation). I'm clutching at straws with these comparisons now, but your mind does tend to wonder a bit during the middle part of a ballet. Anyhow, for just 300 roubles (£5) you couldn't complain and in all seriousness the ballet performers really put in a shift for the crowd, which is all I ever want as a fan.

Monday 19th June Leningrad to Tallinn Baltic Express Train: 033a Departs 06.25 Arrives 13.43

A very early start for the last leg of our trip, a train out of Russia, crossing into Estonia and so back home into the EU. There was not much 'express' about the old 'Baltic Express' rattler, it has a similar compact seat lay out to one of those old Northern Rail tanks that go from Preston to Burnley, and it chugs along at a similar sedate pace. The clear blue skies made for some pleasant views out onto the Gulf of Finland as we approached the Estonian capital and the last destination on this mammoth journey.

This morning, to complete the journey from coast to coast properly, we walked to the baltic shoreline, to get our first glimpse of sea since April, and that is that! 60 days since leaving the Yellow Sea in China, after approximately 12,565km (7,807miles) by train, bus, marashutka, jeep and taxi's only, we've made it to the Baltic Sea. Eurasia is one hell of a landmass! Forget Africa, forget The Americas, Eurasia is number 1. Don't be so quick to overlook it, just cross the channel and it's all there for you, thousands upon thousands of square miles of land to explore without the need to get on a plane. Saying that, we're getting on a cheap flight to Amsterdam on Friday morning, we have a close friends wedding to attend on Saturday and have run out of time, but you get the gist.

A Nightmare Planet for Fictional Terrans & Real Astrophysicists Alike

I read a few anthology comics for this blog  – Journey Into Mystery, Strange Tales, Tales of Suspense, Tales to Astonish (lots of tales…). This is because a lot of Marvel’s superheroes didn’t start with their own titles. However, I’ve only ever written a blog post about one non-superhero story, from Amazing Fantasy #15 (because I couldn’t find anything to write about science-wise in the first appearance of Spider-Man…), and I’m pretty sure it was the second post I ever made. The reason why should be fairly obvious – no one cares about those.

But every once in a while I see one that could use some scientific commentary. They’re usually space-related, because that’s my jam, but not so different from content that’s either popped up in one of the superhero stories already or I’ve a feeling they’re bound to show up sooner or later.

I don’t know if a superhero will have to deal with a planet 2000 times bigger than the Sun, inhabited by a population of humanoids 1000 times bigger than your average man.

The Deets: The year is 2500; mankind has been at peace for a while, relies on solar energy, can cure most diseases, and the few soldiers left in existence are seen as a complete waste of taxpayer money because they do absolutely nothing. But when this nightmare of a planet passes the solar system, 12 of them are sent to the surface (an 18-hour trip) to find out what the giants want with the Earth. Turns out everything on the planet runs on at a much slower time, so everything (except the humans) appears frozen in place; it’ll take a month for the planet to pass the solar system from the perspective of Earth, but a “twinkling of an eye” to the planet’s inhabitants. This recon mission somehow makes everyone back home love the military (…but…but they didn’t do anything…).

How Big is Too Big?

Our Sun has an approximate radius of 700,000 km. I say approximate because

it’s not a perfect sphere; since the giant ball of plasma rotates, mass that would normally prefer to hang out wherever it darn well pleases gets drawn toward the equator – just like the Earth, or a human being who spins around really fast and watches their limp arms rise up. That being said, its oblateness it actually pretty tiny – the difference between the equatorial and polar diameters is only about 10 km.

the Sun doesn’t have an actual physical ‘surface’. Astronomers define the Sun’s ‘surface’ as the inner edge of a specific layer called the photosphere. That’s because below this layer, the Sun is opaque in the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum; it’s the ‘surface’ where it appears the Sun’s light is being emitted. But again, it’s not a definitive opaque/transparent line.

While the largest object in the neighborhood,* the Sun is by no means the largest star in the known universe. You might have come across one of many videos or gifs that start out comparing the sizes of small rocky bodies and end up showing the largest known star. The current record holder is UY Scuti, with an estimated radius about 1,700 times bigger than the Sun (If you plopped it down in place of our own star, its photosphere would engulf Jupiter). Measurements for stars this large are uncertain and are regularly updated – the old record holder was VY Canis Majoris with an estimated 1,800-2,100 solar radii (aka R☉), but it’s now down to 1,420 R☉(plus or minus 120), and may be as low as only 600 R☉.

However, there are astronomical objects out there that can reach and surpass that 2000 R☉size. They’re supermassive black holes (SMBHs). The closest quasar,** named H1821+643, has a SMBH with an event horizon about 89 billion km in radius. The furthest Pluto gets from the Sun is 7.4 billion km (i.e. the EH is 12.7 times further than that). UY Scuti’s radius? 1.2 billion km.

Granted, in 1963 black holes were considered theoretical at best. In fact, the term ‘black hole‘ didn’t show up in print until early 1964, in Ann Ewing’s article “‘Black Holes’ in Space”, but didn’t really hit the ‘mainstream’ until John Wheeler started using it three years later.

It’s been suggested the largest a SMBH can get (roughly speaking) is 50 billion times more massive than our sun, which would have an event horizon 150 billion km in radius. If we’re going to talk about dwarfing everything in the universe, supermassive black holes are the way to go.

At least assuming you can’t use entire galaxies. Those are way bigger…

What Kind of Nightmare is this?

Lets’s assume the planet’s as big as the comic says it is. As I mentioned before, certain celestial objects can be that size. But with size, comes mass.

With stars, mass and radius don’t have the same relationship that more down-to-earth objects might (i.e. that mass is proportional to the radius cubed), and it varies depending on the star’s initial mass and where it is in its stage of life. For example, consider two stars in Orion: Betelgeuse is about 888 R☉and 12 M☉,*** but Rigel A is 80 R☉and 23 M☉. UY Scuti has an estimated mass only around 10 M☉. Astronomers have struggled to find any star over 150 M☉. So, if we haven’t found stars 2000 times more massive than our own, we certainly haven’t found a planet that size.

The largest planets we have found are not Earth-like (i.e. rocky bodies); they’re larger versions of Jupiter. Astronomers are finding new exoplanets as I type, but the largest planets with similar densities to Earth are only about twice (maybe 2.5) as big as Earth. There are a lot of exoplanets with masses in-between Earth and Neptune (the next largest planet in the solar system) with unknown compositions; they might be tiny ‘gas giants’, or large ‘terrestrial planets’.

But the writer clearly intends this planet to be an Earth-analog, so let’s calculate its mass as such. To be made of the same materials as Earth, and be that big, it would need to have a mass of 6.2×1040 kg.

That’s about 31 billion times more massive than the Sun, roughly equivalent to that supermassive black hole in the center of quasar H1821+643. (Aside: Even if we only wanted the planet to be 2000 M☉, black holes are still the only astronomical objects that we know can be that massive.)

With a mass of 31 billion M☉, and a radius 2000 R☉, gravity is so strong that even 92 billion km away from the surface light can’t escape. (With a mass akin to a SMBH, what would you expect?) Not only should people on Earth not be able to see the planet and report it’s “inhabited by soldiers of enormous size”, if that thing came anywhere near our planet (i.e. “millions of miles away” as mentioned above), the entire kit n’ kaboodle would pass the event horizon and never be able to come out. The Earth. The Sun. All the planets no matter where they are in their orbits…

…If it passed near but not event horizon-crossing close, its gravity would still be so strong it would ruin all of the planets’ orbits and probably fling all of them out into the void of space.

Meanwhile, gravity on the surface of the planet would be about 2 million meters per second per second, compared to 9.8 for us. Or, put in terms of g‘s, 217,000g. Any humans would be crushed into a jelly under that force. Those dozen military guys the Earth sent to check things out?

Dead.

Everybody dead.

[Side note: If the mass was only 2000 M☉, the event horizon radius would be 5900 km, which is smaller than the Earth’s radius by a few hundred km. If both mass a radius were 2000 times the Sun’s values, the gravitational acceleration at the surface would be 0.14 m/s2. Tiny.]

The wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey

It is true that in the presence of a larger gravitational force, time slows down. This was explained by Albert Einstein in his General Theory of Relativity, and is where all (or most) of the drama in Interstellar comes from. It works even with small differences in gravity – GPS satellites orbiting the Earth are further away from the planet’s center of mass than we are on the surface, and therefore experience less of a gravitational pull than we do. And they have to compensate for the time dilation that happens down on the surface relative to them.

You can’t calculate time dilation for people inside the event horizon of a black hole (or a planet, in our case). It’s infinity. But even if the planet were only so massive that the event horizon were just under the surface (about half a billion solar masses), as soon as the away team lands on the planet, they’re under the same gravitational force as the giant bugs and the 6000-foot tall humanoids (Note: based on the drawings, they’re clearly not 1000x taller than a man, as the news anchor claimed. They might be 100ft tall, tops…). They’d experience the same slowdown of their internal clocks.

[Side note: If both mass and radius were 2000 times the Sun’s values, time dilation on the surface would be basically nonexistent.]

The recon team would be stuck on the planet as it flies through our solar system – everyone back on Earth long dead by the time they make it back to report their findings.

* “Neighborhood” meaning within 4.3 lightyears. The closest star system to ours - Alpha Centauri, has 3 stars, one of which (Alpha Centauri A) is slightly bigger than our Sun in both mass and radius

** a galactic center powered by a SMBH ‘eating’ matter to such a degree that the light released from the process outshines all the rest of the light in the galaxy

*** 1 M☉- i.e. the mass of the Sun - is 2×1030 kg. Also, Betelgeuse’s size has some pretty big uncertainty - we’re talking plus or minus 200 solar radii.
