I Knew Nothing About Skeena Cat Skiing, and Now I’m a Master at It!
Have you ever heard of Skeena cat skiing? If you’re like I was a while ago, you might be wondering what it is and why it’s become such a hot topic among ski enthusiasts. Skeena cat skiing offers an exciting way to experience the beauty of British Columbia's winter wonderland, and I’m here to share my journey from novice to enthusiast in this thrilling sport!
What is Skeena Cat Skiing?
Skeena cat skiing is an amazing adventure where skiers are transported to pristine slopes in the Skeena Mountains using a snowcat. A snowcat is a special vehicle designed for traversing snowy terrains, making it perfect for reaching untouched areas that are ideal for skiing. This means you can enjoy fresh powder snow away from the crowded ski resorts, allowing for a more peaceful and thrilling skiing experience.
The Thrill of the Adventure
When I first heard about Skeena cat skiing, I was intrigued but nervous. The idea of skiing in deep powder snow and navigating through backcountry terrain sounded both exhilarating and a bit daunting. However, after doing some research and talking to experienced skiers, I learned that the guides are there to help and ensure everyone stays safe.
The experience starts with a brief safety orientation where you learn about the equipment, basic skiing techniques, and how to ride in the snowcat. Once you’re equipped with your gear and knowledge, you hop into the cozy snowcat and head out into the wild! The excitement builds as you get closer to the skiing spots.
Why Choose Skeena Cat Skiing?
Stunning Scenery: The views in the Skeena Mountains are breathtaking. You’ll find yourself surrounded by towering trees, rolling hills, and expansive snow-covered landscapes. It's a photographer’s dream!
Fresh Powder: One of the best parts about cat skiing is that you can enjoy fresh powder that hasn’t been touched by other skiers. It’s a magical feeling to glide through soft snow.
Small Groups: Unlike traditional ski resorts, cat skiing often operates in smaller groups, which makes for a more personalized experience. You can make new friends while sharing an unforgettable adventure.
All Skill Levels Welcome: Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced skier, Skeena cat skiing is accessible to everyone. Guides will match you with terrain that suits your skill level.
Tips for Your First Cat Skiing Adventure
Dress Appropriately: Wear layers so you can stay warm and adjust to the changing temperatures. Don’t forget a good pair of ski socks, gloves, and goggles!
Listen to Your Guide: They’re there to help you navigate the terrain safely. Pay attention during the safety briefing and ask questions if you’re unsure about anything.
Have Fun: Remember, it’s all about enjoying the experience. Don’t worry if you fall or struggle at first; everyone is there to have a good time!
Conclusion
I started my journey into Skeena cat skiing knowing nothing, but through the thrill of the adventure and the support of experienced guides, I’ve become a true enthusiast. It’s a fantastic way to explore the great outdoors and improve your skiing skills. If you’re looking for a new winter adventure, I highly recommend giving Skeena cat skiing a try. You might just find yourself falling in love with this incredible sport, just like I did.

You can even enjoy an abundance of cross nation skiing in one of the close by National Parks. If you are on the lookout for a exercise take the 11km road to Lake O’Hara. The effort might be good for body and soul as you reach one of the most famous lakes in the Canadian Rockies. Golden is a pure selection for many Heliski sledders simply because of its beautiful surroundings, terrain, mild and dry snow conditions and handy location. Local operators supply a big selection of snowmobile tours or sled rental providers. Golden has plenty of decisions for snowmobilers to play with, providing over 240km of groomed trails, four maintained areas and thirteen distinct zones.
The Turtle Creek area in front of the Sutton Place Hotel has a magic carpet and learner’s slope, while the decrease mountain runs from Revelation Lodge are great for development. In its lower reaches, the resort’s longest run, the 15km Last Spike, is also a wide and mild drop again to the resort. It’s just a actually, actually sweet video of some awesome heli-skiing. The London occasion additionally includes reside music from talented signer songwriter Zac Pajak, with each screening together with special raffles with a number of amazing prizes to give away.
This full-service resort options two excellent eating places to select from, ... Are you sitting there waxing your skis or tightening your bindings? Visit the Hello BC website to begin out planning your ski or snowboard vacation. Nearby Silver Star Mountain Resort mixes it up with mild slopes, 132 marked runs, and difficult off-piste terrain, as nicely as over a hundred and fifty five kilometres of Nordic trails. James Cove from Planet Ski says that it is the vast expanses of empty area in Canada that make the nation so much more lovely to behold, notably from the vantage point of considered one of its majestic mountains. He explains that the wildlife, too, is extra numerous and easier to identify – he and his pals even as quickly as witnessed bears emerging from hibernation in Kicking Horse!
The Lyngen Alps of Northern Norway are regaled to be one of the best off-piste skiing locations on the earth. Pristine slopes of contemporary powder merged with icy waters of the North Sea to create complete serenity. With a ban on heli-skiing, these mountains present a truly tranquil and intimate skiing expertise, best accessed by yacht. One hour later I was in a helicopter hovering through the valleys of Western Canada's Coast Mountains looking for the pristine powder snow for which this westernmost province of British Columbia is famous. This was not an ideal skiing day, but the ten others within the Bell 205 helicopter, plus the guide Heli skiing BC and pilot, were all excited in regards to the snow prospects. Drive to the top of the mountain on the 26km/16mi Meadows within the Sky Parkway and hike on one of the trails. Or hop on two wheels and bike a riverside path or on the Mount MacPherson Nordic ski space.
Revelstoke has steep runs and entry to heli skiing, together with an historic railroad/ski town. The resort could not get as a lot snow as resorts further west in British Columbia, however the Purcell Mountain powder is famously light and dry and the lack of crowds means the contemporary snow lasts longer here than elsewhere. With quick raise queues, completely located lodging and a village centre you'll have the ability to ski via, a ski vacation in Sun Peaks is hassle-free. Head to Sundance if you’re a beginner, Morrisey if you like moguls or up Mount Todd for more challenging, steep black runs.
It permits you to discover new areas of the mountain and to ski off-piste on slopes which are not maintained by snow cannons and piste bashers. Putting it at excessive altitudes among peaks buffeted by excessive winds, after which asking the pilot to set down on sometimes icy spots, carries tons more threat. So the whole operation has to Heli skiing be run by disciplined professionals. You'll receive newsletter updates full of special presents, cash saving deals and the most recent holiday news from My Canada Trips and sometimes from other Stewart Travel Limited brands.
The price for a week is roughly the equal of three quite pricey hotel or chalet weeks in resort. But should you pick a fantastic vacation spot and the situations are above average, nothing can beat the adrenaline rush of getting out of a helicopter to ski massive untouched slopes. The climate is barely different yearly and dreamlike conditions can't be guaranteed.
If you’re used to skiing at Whistler or different huge resorts in North America, then you’ll probably be pleasantly shocked with the price of lift passes at BC’s other ski resorts. Whilst not low cost, carry tickets for Revelstoke are at present $129 a day. There are also discounts if you’re shopping for a lift move for 2 or three days. It's uncommon that any of us is blessed with bottomless powder on our annual holiday to Tignes or Kitzbühel.
No travel included. Please note that a 15% rental tax is charged in addition. Eagle Pass heli skiing is a convenient add on to your Revelstoke ski vacation since their downtown base is just a four miles from Revelstoke Mountain Resort. The ski terrain in the Monashees ranges from excessive Heliskiing alpine open bowls to steeper chutes and snowfields, to trees – nicely spaced glades to tight powder filled trees. Some runs are long, others are shorter relying in your group's stamina and the conditions of the day.

OVERVIEW.
columbia floats above north america and is made of neoclassical buildings similar to those present within the white city of 1893 chicago world’s fair. the design relies heavily upon romanesque appearances and colonial american influences. while reactors, propellers and balloons are present throughout the city, its ability to float is due to quantum levitation which allows objects to be suspended indefinitely. the city also has rain catchers that collect water from precipitation in the clouds to keep the vegetation and citizens supplied with water.
columbia was designed with docking stations and propulsion devices to allow sections of it to move about independently. the city was constructed for long distance travel, allowing national and international tours, with a regular route across the united states. these routes featured periodic stops near major cities, connecting to relay stations which contain transport rockets which grant passage to columbia via coded signal. the city’s internal means of transportation include zeppelins, cargo barges, hovercrafts, gondolas that move along heavy steel cables, and sky-lines. bridges are also automated to connect with other moving portions of the city at various stations, scheduled like any other transportation system.
PURPOSE.
the u.s. government intended columbia to be a showcase of american exceptionalism. through tours across various countries, america would be capable of spreading its vision of the future and their ideals to others. through rosalind lutece’s discovery of the lutece particle, which held atoms at a fixed position and financial support by zachary hale comstock, a charismatic american religious figure, the city was created and presented at the 1893 chicago world’s fair.
the city was launched to great fanfare and was later dispatched to distant shores. what began as an endeavor of achievement and hope went horribly wrong. in 1901, during the boxer rebellion where american hostages had been taken, columbian forces intervened without orders from the u.s. government and destroyed beijing. the destruction of the city caused the death of many chinese civilians and demonstrated the danger that columbia posed to the rest of the world.
when the city was revealed to be heavily armed and to have acted on its own, a rift emerged between leadership in columbia and washington, resulting in columbia being recalled to american shores. in response, on july 6th, 1902, columbia seceded from the union and the following year disappeared into the clouds. zachary comstock had complete control over the city, and so, set to create his ideal society.
BELIEFS & LIFE.
the emerging utopia had its flaws, though they were not seen as problems by its leaders. zachary comstock and his political party, the founders, believed that columbia embodied the true society envisioned by the founding fathers of the united states, where white anglo-saxons ruled over the world and that their country served a higher purpose in ‘civilizing’ through military might and propagating their particular brand of religion. to many columbians, the u.s. had turned away from its divine purpose, having abandoned slavery, religion, militarism and racial supremacy. the u.s. and the rest of the world below were viewed with contempt, described as ‘the sodom below’, a sinful and chaotic world which only deserved to be destroyed. columbia, in comparison, was referred to as ‘another ark, for another time’ by its citizens, meaning the city was the only source of goodness and order, and once columbia destroyed the rest of the world, everything could restart pure and anew under the city’s absolute rule. due to zachary comstock’s dogma, columbians had a very narrow perspective of american history ; president abraham lincoln was labeled ‘the apostate’ by citizens for ending slavery, while john wilkes booth was revered as a saint.
with the city free from the united states’ anti-slavery and workers’ safety laws, institutionalized racism and elitism were widespread and legally enforced in columbia. anglo-saxon supremacy was widely asserted by the upper classes, matched with poor treatment of the immigrant working class. there was constant paranoia over the ‘foreign horde’ due to the racial beliefs of the time, cuasing columbian xenophobia and militarism. africans, asians, indians, and irish, were regularly subjugated in columbia, with many working to power columbia’s industry. this was under the guise of employment, while some were brought in by force to serve as slaves or indentured servants. the more privileged classes lead more leisurely lives. this was all justified by the majority of columbia’s citizens with the belief that the minorities had risen above their station, and that their toil was a form of penance. others simply saw it as a source of cheap, expendable labor.
as a result of this separation, minorities were largely relegated to menial labor with no opportunity for upward mobility, and asking for improvements would likely result in being attacked by the city police, or worse. the hard labor workforce at fink manufacturing, well-known for mistreating its workers, was chiefly composed of the city’s minority population and was closely supervised and controlled by heavily armed police officers. the majority of columbia’s working class lived in shabby, crime-ridden, and diseased slums, a stark contrast to the clean, stately neighborhoods of the upper classes. those few who worked in areas where the founders dominated were expected to be servile to their betters while dealing with inhumane working and living conditions. some who worked in the homes of the elite enjoyed slightly better lives depending on their owner’s generosity.
such policies were widely accepted by the majority of the upper and middle class. to them, this hierarchy was heaven-born and divinely ordained. some exceptions existed, with few progressives operating in secret, who published rebellious material demanding equality, and who provided safe lodgings for escaped workers. ‘protecting our race’ was the official maxim of columbia’s police, and any attempts of interracial couples was illegal ( public stoning of those who disobeyed was a common diversion during important celebrations ). any attempts to promote egalitarianism lead to imprisonment and torture. murder and torture of minorities was ignored by the founders, as well as the police authorities, if not outright encouraged. control was also enforced covertly and brutally by a splinter group of the founders, the fraternal order of the raven, which doubled as an assassination group and special operations force who regularly lynched, attacked and kidnapped those who threatened zachary comstock’s ideals.
columbia was a militantly theocratic and fascist society that idolized american exceptionalism. religion and government were one and the same, and devotion to the city and its leader/prophet was required of its citizens. this was based upon the teachings of zachary comstock as a divine prophetic figure, as well as interpretations of the founding fathers, whom columbian belief said were appointed by the archangel columbia to rise america above all other nations in law, technology, and power. the belief that zachary comstock was chosen to complete the mission of the founding fathers was widespread. his word was law, though elected officials did exist. images of him, annabelle comstock and elizabeth alongside angels were all over columbia, which were presented as heavenly places. columbia’s religiosity appears like a form of protestant christianity that would have risen during that era due to the third great awakening, but little resembles actual christianity. columbia’s prevailing religious ideology was very much a personality cult that is typical of despotic regimes.
deviation from this state-imposed dogma was unacceptable and illegal. the founders, led by zachary comstock and columbia's elite, were the prevailing political faction in columbia, retaining exclusive control over the city's society, government and business infrastructure. they enforced comstock's religious and social vision out of blind devotion or greed, and in turn benefited from it as part of the privileged social strata. the founders were also extremely militaristic, enforcing their laws and operations in a police state with a huge army of police officers and security automatons. they used child indoctrination to encourage military service through theater. a fleet of airships, headed by comstock's personal zeppelin, kept constant watch over columbia's skies, ready to attack on comstock 's orders.
BUSINESS.
fink manufacturing was the largest business in columbia, as well as its largest employer and manufacturer. due to a high demand for vigors in the city, fink manufacturing bottled and distributed vigors produced by independent, contracted businesses. the work floor at fink manufacturing showed its dominance in various markets — one floor, for example, was devoted to gun automatons, while the one above focused on children's toys.
smaller businesses produced various items for the people of columbia, the founders, and the vox populi. however, most of these companies were quickly bought out by fink's cruel business empire, leaving him the sole distributor for goods in the city. there were some exceptions, such as the duke & dimwit company, which produced propaganda pieces via books, toys, and machines to indoctrinate columbia's children into its ideals.
despite these business opportunities, 50% of every silver eagle earned went directly to comstock, which deeply affected the laborers of columbia. furthermore, fink's price gouging and heavy-handed exploitation of his workers forced them into poverty, frequently leading to starvation and disease.
SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY.
comstock believed that scientific knowledge was the blueprint of god's work, and that it could, therefore, be practiced and controlled in the name of god. many advancements in columbia were the product of the mind of rosalind lutece, a quantum physicist and one of the most prominent scientists of her time. her work led to the discovery of the lutece field, a field capable of manipulating the properties of subatomic particles. one such application was the suspension of particles in space, facilitating the creation of airborne machinery and, by extension, the city of columbia.
following her work on the lutece field, rosalind lutece made an even more ground-breaking discovery : the device she created allowed her to interact with parallel realities, leading her to contact her duplicate from another universe, robert lutece. through their joint effort, they developed machinery capable of creating contingencies in the space-time continuum, or tears, allowing robert to travel to rosalind's reality ( albeit at a great physical cost ).
zachary comstock interpreted these tears as revelatory visions of the future, increasing his delusions of grandeur. using these tears, he orchestrated the transfer of anna dewitt, the daughter of an alternate version of himself to columbia and rechristened her as elizabeth to become his successor. he unknowingly gave birth to her reality-bending powers by splitting her form across multiple realities.
while most citizens regarded these tears as a mere curiosity, individuals such as jeremiah and albert fink exploited their access to parallel universe technologies. while albert fink simply used tears as a means of trans-dimensional artistic theft, jeremiah copied the designs of other researchers to create radically new technologies, such as vigors, automotive horses, the voxophones, and motorized patriots. based on the blueprints of an armored suit, he engineered the songbird defense system.
#boy oh boy this is long#but it's v much needed !!!#i recommend u reading it if u know absolutely NOTHING abt bioshock infinite#also i'm shook#while columbia might have amazing scenery#their ideals and beliefs are absolutely disgusting#not to mention zachary comstock is an evil son of a bitch#i hate him from the bottom of my heart#thank you#headcanon tbt.#long post /#racism /#slavery /

High drama today. Well, not really. But. The animals have been being dramatic, and the weather has been changing its mind every fifteen seconds in highly dramatic fashions, and the capper of it all is that Farmbaby was having a sleepover at Grandma and Grandpa’s, and then while Grandma was out at her knitting group, and Grandpa was putting Farmbaby to bed, Farmbaby was jumping on the bed (which she has been told not to do!) and sure enough went sailing off and cracked her chin into the dresser and got a big cut. So Sister and B-I-L had to zoom out the door and go to Mom and Dad’s house to get Farmbaby, since Dad was by himself with her and didn’t think he could really manage to get her to the hospital, and they went and have been waiting a couple of hours for stitches now.
We’ll see how many days she goes without jumping on the bed, after that.
Sigh. They’ll all be zombies tomorrow, but there’s no help for it.
I took the truck down to McEnroe, in Dutchess County, to get organic potting soil. It’s literally the closest place to get it in bulk. And I mean... they make it there, themselves, so it’s worth a trip there. The drive involves NY-66, which goes through Hoag’s Corners and some really beautiful bits of the back half of Rensselaer Co-- notably the crucible of the Anti-Rent War of the 1840s-- and then a bunch of NY-22, which is through a fairly mountainous area of Columbia Co, which is kind of alarmingly ravishing. I do recommend it, for scenery. Of course, in an unfamiliar 35-year-old Ford F-150 with an actual literal ton of soil in the back, it’s not an easy drive, but. At least this time I downloaded my directions so it didn’t drop me off in fuck-knows-where and lose signal. So I posted a video from there that i know crossposted here but you can’t really see how stunning the view was. Also my... accent? is not? how I usually talk? it’s... inexplicable. err got mah potting serl, she says, and gets in er truck. wtf.
It was brutally windy today too, and cold. I really though I’d have to fight to get the cushy indoor job of driving, but nobody else wanted to go? It’s 3 hours in the truck, so. But. Anyway.
While I was gone, Farmsister got a video of the baby pigs. Two of the sows were lying belly to belly, and every single pig, including the 10 babies from the third sow, had piled into a single pile, because pigs are gregarious and like other pigs and that’s how they like to be. It was so cute. Here it is.
(Oh I posted a video earlier of those pigs and crossposted it including to Facebook? Sure enough, some man was like “mm bacon”, bearing out my extensive anthropological study that an astonishingly wide selection of the male population thinks they are Edgy(TM) and Hilarious in exactly the same ways, it’s amazing. I did write back, it’s one of Dude’s cousins and IDGAF, and I was like... “duh it’s a meat farm?? we just think it’s really tacky to say that but go off I guess.” [I’m sorry, did you think these were milk pigs or something. Mm yes we raise them for the eggs.])
(another aside, Farmbaby has decided she was hatched from an egg, this is extremely hilarious.)
Sister and I worked on fencing for when the various animals are going out to pasture very soon, and it was too cold, and neither of us was dressed warmly enough, but we survived. Reno the cat helped us on a long stretch of pasture fencing, for some reason deciding that this was a thing he could enjoy. He liked it because hog fencing is low to the ground, so my sister kept bending low to fasten the wire, and he felt that he should get petted every time, and she felt that she should oblige. It was not our fastest work ever.
Then we put up some metal mesh fencing around the breeding sows, because the little pigs are starting to explore and can of course just run right under the electric fence. And it’d be okay, they wouldn’t really go all that far-- but the barnyard sometimes has vehicles, and they might not be smart enough to avoid the wheels, and the drivers wouldn’t necessarily be able to see them, and that’s just not a tragedy we need. Also, one of the sows, Cookies, who is a mean old bitch that I’m scared of, but also probably the canniest and most experienced mother of the bunch, kept worriedly coming to stand at the fence and fuss at the babies, so we thought we should ease her mind a little. She also kept carrying hay out from the pile in the stalls out into the edge of the enclosure where there was a mud puddle, because some of the piglets had started learning to dig in the mud, and she seemed upset that their tiny snouts were getting filthy. So she was very carefully picking up mouthfuls of hay and spreading it around in the mud. Sows normally exhibit nest-building behavior around the time they farrow, and she’s been carrying mouthfuls of hay back to the area where she gave birth and still returns to nurse ever since about four hours before she gave birth, but this was different behavior. And, as it happens, last year this time, every one of her piglets drowned in mud, because the enclosure they were in wasn’t good enough. So we’re wondering if she remembers that. (It was more that it was too cold and damp, than that they drowned exactly, but it was definitely that the mud was a problem.) Anyway, it was a puzzle.
While we were fixing up the fence, one of the new interns came running and asked Farmsister to come look at something. All it was, really, was that one of the meat chicken chicks had been injured, and was dying, but the poor thing had basically expired in the woman’s hands as she’d tried to save it, and she was badly shaken by it. We reassured her, because those chickens are so delicate, a lot of things can kill them, and it might have been the injury or might even have just been an internal defect that the injury stressed too much. But it’s still upsetting to watch a tiny life get snuffed out. She kept saying, ‘but I could just feel its heartbeat with my hands!’ and was clearly really rattled. The other intern is her husband, and was very dismissive, and he wasn’t wrong-- shit happens, and a 10% loss rate is pretty normal with those guys-- but it’s still upsetting, so we were more sympathetic than he was.
Tonight the indoors animals have been drama queens. I’ve let Whiskey and Reno in and out ten times each, and Reno was chasing Whiskey and Beans was hissing at them, and that made Dini bark at them and then I threw Reno out and Whiskey hid somewhere and Beans decided she wanted to sleep with Dini, and Dini growled at her like some kind of hellhound, but when I turned the lights off to go to bed, Dini gave up on her stony vigil by the door and went back and curled up in the bed.
It’s an uneasy detente.
Look at that very tiny black ball of utter misery. This poor animal lives an extremely hard life.
The other notable thing I did today was thaw two whole chickens, which I cut up with zero skill whatsoever so if I can do it so can anyone, and put in to marinate according to @walburgablack‘s directions, so we shall see!! Astonishingly, my sister does not have any red pepper, so I cut up an actual dried red pepper that she had in the remnants of a homemade ristra, and put that in the yogurt to soak for a little while before I mixed up the rest of the marinade. We’ll... see. The benefit of doing it here is that Farmsister has a pressure cooker. Which I haven’t really used, but surely I can figure it out.

change of scenery

When I tried going downstairs for water I heard my parents’ voices in the dining room. It might seem stupid to assume an argument was happening without even understanding the words being said, but by this point, I just know. Otherwise, I would have heard the rustle of utensils against plates or mugs. The occasional laughter. My dad’s amused voice. My mom's soft chuckle.
Lately, they’ve been arguing more and it kind of makes sense considering I will be leaving soon, no longer to be a part of the family trio we are. Whether it be to become a film student or a possible future lady, only time will tell. I considered eavesdropping, slowly making my way down the staircase, but after the palace was mentioned alongside my name I realized I was somehow weaved into the whole discussion and headed back upstairs as fast as silent steps enabled me.
Now I lie on my bed staring at the ceiling, music flooding my ears, but it's not enough to drown my thoughts away. That means it’s time to let out some steam. I sit up and cautiously glance at the door like someone will barge in any second. As usual, the door remains unopened and I walk to my closet to grab a jacket. My cell phone is carefully placed in a zipper inside it as I lock the door, ensuring no one will be able to come in while I'm gone. The last thing to do is turn off the lights and whoever passes by will assume I'm asleep and keep walking
Then I go to my balcony, taking in some fresh air as I watch autumn leafs fall gracefully. Seems like a perfect night...would be a pity to spend it in my room sulking.
Better sulking with the stars.
I let my hand trace the railway around the balcony, feeling the cool of the metal under my grip before pushing myself up and swinging my legs past it to jump into the night.
The wind is cold against my skin when I’ve been running for a while, but I welcome it with a smile. The heat of going around the province jumping over dumpsters and climbing fences makes the air refreshing. Eventually, I reach the abandoned building I usually go to and make my way up the fire escape ladder. On the roof, the adrenaline slips away and sit in my spot, legs dangling over the darkness of the streets below as I stare at the darkness of the sky above.
It is well known the less populated areas of the city are the best for stargazing, especially past curfew when everyone’s supposed to be in their houses. I’ve had an encounter with policemen only once for being out after hours and running away from them into alleyways was both thrilling and horrifying. If word of that had gotten out, however, every magazine would’ve talked about it. Thankfully I’d kept enough distance not to be recognized with a hoodie as I ran.
After I finally catch my breath and my thoughts settle, the overwhelming feeling comes. A few years ago I thought I’d never want to leave Columbia. That I’d miss the comfort of home, of what I knew, what I was used to...even my family as fragmented as it was sometimes. The past few months that has changed. Not because there aren’t still good moments, but because I’m done with it all. I need a break.
Today I wish I could just leave.
I steal some popcorn from Wilson as he sits on the floor. He's trying to pick the movie we’ll watch when "The Report" is over. Meanwhile, Mrs. Grayson, aka Wilson’s grandmother, is chatting it up with my parents in the living room. It's always nice to be invited to dinner at her house. It has that comfy feel to it and it's where I get to call Wilson by his first name. According to him, his dad was an even bigger nerd than himself, hence the Star Trek reference on it. Sometimes he seems embarrassed by the fact, but I know he's fond of the memory he has of his dad.
On screen, Nate is starting to pick out envelopes with names, but even though his smile is on point, it’s pretty obvious he’s not really focused on what he’s saying. It's good to see even he gets hit by nerves on camera.
“He’s on C’s now,” Wilson points out as he spares me a glance.
I flip over a CD box in my hand to read the synopsis and pretend not to care that Colombia’s Selected will be announced soon. “I know the alphabet, Geordi.”
He rolls his eyes with a sigh but focuses on reading a synopsis of his own. I stare back at the TV then. I can’t believe how much I want this now. I want to be Selected.
Soon enough they’re in our province and Nate takes out a card from the chosen envelope. I’m not sure if I see recognition on his face, but the name that comes out of his mouth is unmistakable.
“Clove Teasdale.”
Wilson yells a “WHAT?” as he looks back at the screen and my photograph appears. A grin spreads across my face as my head wraps itself around the news.
“I’m in.”
Humanity is stupid and cruel, that’s a fact. A fact only some manage to avoid and yet it's not avoidable for long. You slip up. You mess up. You suck sometimes. I suck sometimes. Thing is if you notice it. If you change it. My dad? He’s probably never going to be able to change and become prince charming for my mom. Do I think that’s good? No. Will I shut him down for that? No. Will I accept the “I’m being nice today because I was an idiot with your mom earlier and started a discussion” tea? Also no.
I take a sip of it though. “Why are you offering me yours?”
“You said you’re not going for yours until later...and the water might get cold again if you wait. I can go for more right now,” he states with a shrug.
Usually, my dad is the kind of person that would ask me to get him his tea. Especially if I’m ‘not busy’.
“So you’re actually saying you’re gonna give me yours, go back to the kitchen, and then serve yourself another cup?” I ask. He doesn’t notice my hidden skepticism.
“Yeah, your mom heated water for herself. I heated what remained in the teapot after washing the dishes.”
And there it is. “You washed the dishes, huh?”
“Yeah.” He says it like it’s not a big deal. Either he doesn’t know I notice his biggest guilt-tell or he doesn’t realize it’s a major tell. Or maybe he denies it to himself. “There’s more water so you can keep my cup.”
Okay, fact about myself: I’m a lazy teen sometimes. But then again, aren’t we all? I don’t really want to get up for a tea I never planned to have, however, tea is nice. Now I want it and here’s my dad standing in front of me, offering me one that’s already prepared. I’m sort of in the middle of watching a movie. A major bad guy just turned out to be one step ahead of everyone so this might not be a bland one after all. Forgive me if I don’t want to go all the way to the kitchen for a drink right now.
That line of logic makes me want to accept his tea, but it’s prepared like he likes it and it’s an ‘I’m-compensating-out-of-guilt’ tea. After a silent debate that takes a matter of seconds I offer him the cup back. “I’ll just go in a few minutes to get my own, but thanks.”
He takes it and reminds me the water will get cold. I point out I don’t really mind if my drink isn’t burning with the intensity of a thousand suns like he and mom like theirs to be and he leaves.
My farewell was fun with how flashy Columbia decided to be with its parade and I managed to pull off the “inspirational, I’ll be amazing at this and make you proud” speech, but saying goodbye was probably the hardest part. Going on trips with my parents wasn’t the same as going alone. Still, even with the nostalgic feeling of leaving, there was excitement. The kind of excitement that makes you nervous at the same time.
Dad seemed a bit sad to watch me leave but smiled all around. Mom gave me a long pep talk, but I know I’ll miss those long conversations. Even Wilson surprised me with a hug out of nowhere yet for once I didn’t mind. I’d miss him too. Now it was time to actually interact with people I don’t know.
A blonde girl is standing alone at the airport with a plate I realize is filled with cookies when I arrive. Usual greetings happen except they involve skeptically staring at cookies. It turns out she actually made them for us and I can’t help but hesitate to take one. Even if she looks like the living personification of a cupcake, taking food from strangers seems inadvisable. The cookies look okay, don’t get me wrong, but Dad’s attempts at cooking look pretty good too until you taste them. I stare at the cream frosting for a while before taking a small bite, feeling the sugar pretty quickly. “Oh, they're not bad.”
I keep eating as she talks. Turns out her name is Clara Èclair so either her parents were really into tongue twisters or they were obsessed with alliteration. She almost gets my name right, but I decide to laugh at the mistake.
“It's Clove actually, but close enough.”
“Oh no! Guess my flashcards didn't work as well as I thought.” She giggles at her own words but I wouldn’t put it past her to be serious about flashcards hid somewhere in her clothes. I’m almost sure the third girl that arrives is Stephanie Loretta, the daughter of an old, infamous Selected.
She’s more eager than I was to accept the offered cookie and the fact that Clara gets her name right on the first try further strengthens my suspicion that she made actual flashcards. The exchange of greetings, cookies, praise, and gratitude go too fast for me to follow so I just wave at Stephanie and contribute to the conversation when I’m able to. When we’re finally done waiting for the last girl--that turns out to be named Allegra--we board the plane.
As interesting as the clouds outside the plane window are it’s hard to ignore the sick look on Clara’s face once we take off, so I remove my headphones again and mumble, “You okay?” That gets the attention of the other girls, who quickly get concerned for some reason.
“I've just never been on a plane before,” Clara admits. “I’m a little nervous.”
Allegra goes with the “it’ll be okay” attempt at comfort while Stephanie goes to the extreme of... maybe getting medicine for some reason? I wave the suggestion aside and lean closer to the edge of my seat. “She just needs to calm down.”
Clara seems to agree with me on that, but when Allegra suggests water she declines, saying maybe a cookie will be better since sugar might calm her down. I don’t think Clara was the best at chemistry class.
“This is a nicer tin can than you think, don't worry too much about it,” I say, reaching for another cookie and leaning back on my seat. “Think of it as a means of transport. Like a car per say. You're not scared of cars, are you? Sure, things can go wrong in both, but the probabilities of it are slim so you don't worry about it when you get in a car. Why should you worry about it on a plane?”
My words seem to work and she goes into a ramble that boils down to “There's nothing to actually worry about.”
I take a bite of my cookie with a “Mhmm” as Stephanie tells her the first time is the hardest one. Somehow that leads to Clara realizing she’s a Three now and yet again her scattered thoughts lead to her complimenting each of us.
Apparently, I could be an excellent queen because I’m level-headed. Also, Allegra is regal and Stephanie sweet enough for all the people to love. I can’t help but blink a couple of times at her sudden praise for each of us and swallow the piece of cookie I was chewing on. “Glad you think so..”
They chat for a while after that about how their nerves got a better hand over their sleep. That makes Allegra mention we have a couple of hours as she looks down at her wrist, but there is nothing to look at. “Darn I forgot my watch.”
“That's probably going to be the most annoying thing of being here,” Clara mutters, though it’s unclear if that was only meant for herself to hear. “Slowly noticing we forgot little things like watches.” She has some pretty weird concerns.
As if we haven’t had enough 180 degree changes in our conversation, Allegra suddenly mentions, “It’s scary to think we might not be the same people at the end of this.”
“Now I’m not feeling as better,“ Clara mumbles.
Well, this is getting deep. “At least you didn't forget your watch like Allegra. True tragedy there.”
Make overs were done as soon as we got to the palace but with my hair already short and well kept, there wasn’t much of a drastic change for me.
The next day I decide to wake up early to scout the palace with no one around, only a few maids or butlers to be seen and none of my own maids in my new room making suggestions of what I should wear.
When I arrived yesterday I realized I barely remember this place. Though it has been a while since I’ve visited. Being too busy with school work was the excuse I came up with to avoid trips to the palace as I got older--when arguing in front of me became less of a problem for my parents.
The years haven’t made this building any less admirable fortunatly, so I walk in silence across the halls until I find the library. Even if you’re not an avid reader it’s one of the nicest areas here. It’s peaceful and there are books about basically everything you can think of.
My fingers glide over the old hardcovers, but I stop when I see a leather one with golden letters on it’s spine. I know you’re not supposed to judge books by their exterior, but every now and then I find it fun to judge covers as something completely seperate of their story. The empty spot the book leaves on the bookshelf, however, reveals something I was not expecting to see yet. Someone.
I can’t help but gasp at the sight of Brooks standing on the other side, flipping through a book casually. I duck before he gets a chance to see me, then roll my eyes at the luck I’m having. Why is he even up so early?
I don’t move for a while, hoping he will find it odd, but won’t question it. A few seconds go by and I start walking away, careful with my footsteps. I don’t need an encounter with Mr. snobby-pants right now.
Why couldn’t I bump into Nate or Quinn? Heck, even Max would’ve been better than him. Just when I think I’ve been saved from having a meet up with the second prince, my back hits a stack of books on a desk and they fall to the ground.
Shoot.

Best Destinations in 2020
“I wish I had never gone travelling,” said no one ever.
They say the world is a book and those who don’t travel read only a page, so we definitely invite you to explore a few more pages this year. The reward of travel is always worth it. Here is a roundup of the best destinations to hit in 2020. You might as well start packing your bags already.
Zambia A visit to Zambia is an unquestionable face-to-face encounter with Mother Nature. With more than thirty percent of the country’s land reserved for national parks, this southern African destination is the depiction of awe-inspiring wildlife at its finest. To start with, Kafue National Park, the country’s largest, is a port-in-a-storm for flora and fauna. If you enjoy the sight of silky water flows, Victoria’s Falls should not be missed. For all archaeology and history devotees out there, the Livingstone Museum is such an intriguing experience.
Aerial few of the world famous Victoria Falls with a large rainbow over the falls. This is right at the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in Southern Africa. The mighty Victoria Falls at Zambezi river are one of the most visited touristic places in Africa.
Tunisia While Zambia is a wildlife paradise, Tunisia is a historic pride. The Tunisian ancient city of Dougga is considered the best-preserved Roman town in North Africa, with temples, streets and bath complexes. This includes the walls of the mighty Roman amphitheater of El Djem – a big sightseeing highlight, the surrounding modern town seems like a dwarf in comparison. Besides Tunisia’s historical credentials, the beaches of Djerba Island will leave you with moonstruck eyes. Houmt Souk in Djerba is an old town district, where shopping is an attraction in itself, with plenty of handicraft vendors. Amazingly photogenic, Sidi Bou Said is a clifftop village of petite dimensions that seem to have fallen off an artist’s canvas; it is the portrayal of Tunisian architecture at its best, while the Mediterranean backdrop is the cherry on top.
Japan This island country has much more than just subtropical scenery to offer this year. Japan’s capital, Tokyo, where ultramodern and the traditional stand side by side, is hosting the anticipated 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Also, Tokyo has the country’s superb National Museum of Nature and Science, housing fascinating interactive displays on space development, nuclear energy and transportation. Not to mention, Tokyo’s Ginza District is the ultimate spot to shop-till-you-drop. In case you want to go on a foodie’s adventure, Fukuoka is a must-go. Nagasaki, which in 2020 marks seventy-five years since the WWII atomic bombing, might be associated with tragedy. However, its numerous attractions today are tangible proof that even catastrophes cannot crumble dreams for a better tomorrow.
Peace Statue, Nagasaki,Japan
Vancouver, British Columbia
Here are merely a few of Vancouver’s most instagrammable places to start with if you head to this city. The Bloedel Conservatory is a picturesque indoor tropical garden located at the stunning Queen Elizabeth Park, a harbor for exotic birds, plants and flowers. Tofino is a pretty fishing village, popular for its whale watching, which you can see up-close from a boat or overhead in a seaplane taking off from the harbor. Lastly, we suggest you never leave Vancouver before taking the Skyride gondola to Grouse Mountain’s peak. Trust us, the thrill will be worth it. The city skyline from the windows alone is enough to get your heart racing.
Sri Lanka Full of breathtaking landscapes, majestic mountains, lush green tea gardens and golden beaches, the island of Sri Lanka is nothing short of magnificent. The vibes will hit you as you follow the footprints of Buddha on Adam’s Peak, one of Sri Lanka’s most mesmerizing spots, which allows you to witness some amazing views. A very popular tourist destination is Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. You can’t experience anything short of wonderful as you watch baby elephants enjoying a river soak. Known for its unique architecture, the Dambulla cave temple is adorned with over 150 statues of Buddha. Experience the peace and serenity that bear testimony to the extraordinary cultural artifacts in ancient Sri Lanka.

train station, kiss under the rain, snow angels, candlelight? :) knock yourself out!
Hey! Thanks for giving me something to think about to distract myself from the boredom of my last couple of hours of work.🙂
Train Station: Where do you want to travel?
Oh, I have a few places I really want to go! Top of the list is the Iguazu Falls on the border of Argentina and Brazil. I really want to visit Argentina anyway, but those falls look amazing.
Canada is another one that’s high on the list, especially British Columbia, which looks absolutely stunning, and Toronto. I’ve been to Canada once before, but it was only a flying visit. I was visiting the US and the group I was with took a trip to Niagara Falls. I would love to go back.
Hawaii is another one I’d love to see, again for the breathtaking scenery and natural beauty.
Denmark is another one on the list. I don’t really know why, but I’ve always wanted to go there ever since I was a child! And I really want to see the Northern Lights, preferably in Iceland. I could keep going! But those are the big ones. Maybe if I win the lottery, huh? 😉
Kiss Under the Rain: What sounds help you sleep?
I usually like it quiet when I’m trying to sleep. I might listen to music or something to wind down but I generally turn it off when I’m actually ready to sleep. I guess I don’t mind listening to the rain as I’m falling asleep, but, yeah, I’m generally okay with silence.
Snow Angels: What’s your favourite kind of weather?
Oh, I’m gonna be one of those people who can’t give you a definitive answer on that one!
For example, I think bright, sunny days are great for raising the spirits. They just make everything seem that little bit better.
But then I also love those crisp, autumn days where maybe there’s a little breeze, but it’s not terribly cold, just more sort of ‘fresh’, if you get what I mean.
Then there’s those winter mornings where I don’t want to get out of my nice, warm bed and face the cold, but once I’m up and out of the house the cold actually feels bracing and you snap to full awareness and the air feels 'clean’, for want of a better word.
I don’t even hate rain! Well, unless there’s been too much of it too many days in a row and it’s grey everywhere. That can get a little depressing. But, yeah, as long as I can still get about without too much hassle (I tend to walk everywhere), I’m usually pretty chill with whatever the weather’s doing.
Candlelight: What romantic cliché do you wish for most?
Honestly, the guys I’ve been with in the past have set the bar so low in that respect that I’d probably fall hook, line and sinker for one who did anything remotely romantic for me! Don’t get me wrong, I know there’s more to love and relationships than grand gestures and showy displays, but a little romance once in a while wouldn’t hurt, you know? As for which particular cliché I’d wish for most, hell, I’d settle for any of them!😉
Thanks so much for your questions! 😘

CANADIAN THINGS PART 2, THE SEQUEL NO ONE ASKED FOR!!!!
hiiii yesss!! so if you’ve seen my last canada post (HA that’s a pun bc our mail service is called “canada post” har har har...anyway) u know that i had some records to set straight, so to speak, so i’m back at it again w canada FACTS aka things you probably don’t know but might be useful and helpful in your attempt to flesh out realistic Canadiana™. this is in honour of me hitting 500 followers, thank y’all so much ily all and thanks for bein awesome!!!
without further ado, buckle up, buds, here we go again!!!!
canada eradicated pennies not too long ago. basically, we don’t have a 1¢ coin anymore, we only have 5¢ coins ergo all payments paid in cash are rounded up/down accordingly. jack and ransom 100% hate this because now they’re so annoyed by the concept of carrying around pennies (”what’s the point!?!? 1¢??! USELESS!!)
along this same vein, canada doesn’t have a $1 bill, we have coins known as a loonie ($1) and a toonie ($2), the smallest bill we have is $5 (jack is still consistently weirded out by paper dollar bills. it feels wrong.)
ALSO while we’re on the topic of money, all our bills are different colours (blue for $5, purple for $10, green for $20, red for $50, brown for $100), they’re also waterproof (not heatproof tho!!!), and the $100 ARE NOT officially created to smell like maple syrup but i can assure you i’ve sniffed some bills that do smell like maple syrup and i cannot explain why (ransom still gets confused w american money “it looks like monopoly money, jack!” “i know, bro, i know”)
IN OTHER MONEY RELATED TRAINS OF THOUGHT, there are two main canadian airlines: air canada and westjet. they both have a total monopoly on canadian travel so it’s real damn expensive to fly anywhere in canada from within canada. it sucks a whole lot. (just remember than whenever you write ransom/jack flying home. it’s a pretty penny even if jack is loaded)
age of consent is 16 across canada
the drinking age in canada is 18/19 (dependent on provinces), however, CANADA WIDE the legal adult age (to vote, essentially) is 18.
driving ages differ province to province (you’d have to google because even i don’t know every province)
SPEAKING OF PROVINCES, canada is split into provinces and territories: 10 provinces and 3 territories. here’s a breakdown of each (it’s long, skip if you wanna!!):
british columbia (BC)
west coast best coast, lots of mountains, very hippy dippy, home province of vancouver aka movie city central, capital city is VICTORIA not vancouver, rains a lot, is known for being the birth city of ryan reynolds (your welcome), is split into two main sections: the mainland and the island (even though BC is composed of many islands, vancouver island is referred to as THE island), bland football team, even blander NHL team.
alberta (AB)
neighbour to BC, cowboys, hyper-conservative, also mountains, capital is EDMONTON not calgary, lots of extreme weather (sunshine and +20 (celsius) and then it’ll snow. alberta is weird like that), oil oil OIL, two mediocre football teams, home of the calgary stampede (again, cowboys), i often refer to alberta as the texas of canada and i’ve never had someone disagree tbh, mediocre hockey teams (including connor mcfuckingjesus don’t get me started)
saskatchewan (SK)
neighbour to AB, pronounced SASS-CAT-CHEW-WAH-N, flat flat FLAT, farmers galore, capital city regina (hahaha laugh it up it’s not that funny once you’re beyond the age of 10), even more mediocre football team (i’m only saying that bc i’m from manitoba, the rival province), tbh i don’t know much about saskatchewan except that we drove all the way across it once for a roadtrip and i swear to god we didn’t see another vehicle or human for the entirety of our trip across
manitoba (MB)
neighbour to SK and also the prime rival, capital city winnipeg (YES IT’S A REAL PLACE, I WAS BORN THERE, I LIVED THERE FOR 18 YEARS, CAN CONFIRM, STOP IT), cold as FUUUUUCK in the winter (-40 (celsius) and schools don’t close until it’s -45, so, deal w THAT), mosquitoes fucking galore (it’s disgusting and awful and makes being outdoors AWFUL), we also have polar bears!! (more north, but, still!!!!), really cool live theatre and music vibes, very dry heat, UBER MEDIOCRE FOOTBALL TEAM (but still better than SK rough riders bc provincial rivalry!!!), SUPER mediocre NHL team (i only say this because my mom’s a jets fan whereas i’m a pens fan...lmao BYE MOM), tbh can’t say many mean things bc i still love wpg with at least half my heart!!!!
ontario (ON)
neighbour to MB, capital city toronto, home of the capital city of CANADA, ottawa, muskoka chairs, so many fuckin lakes (everyones fave place to camp/own a cabin), extreme winters just like MB, niagara falls, again a rly cool arts district here (in TO and surrounding area), 3 football teams bc why the fuck not (fffffuck the TO argonauts), 2 NHL teams (everyone in canada hates the leafs. that’s not a fact but i could find enough evidence of it to convince you it is), basically TO is considered the center of the fucking universe according to everyone who lives in TO and everyone who lives outside of canada bc no one knows anything else about canada. canada might as well JUST be TO for all people fucking care. just. fuck toronto. (i think it’s a canadian thing to be Bitter and Annoyed about toronto’s unending praises from every corner of the map) ((jack is V much “fffffuck toronto” and ransom is V much “fuck you toronto is RAD”)
quebec (QC)
neighbour to ON, pronounced KUH-BECK not KWUH-BECK or KEY-BECK and lord have mercy on your soul if you dare say it like “Q-BECK”, capital city quebec city, french-canadian province that’s threatened to “leave” canada multiple times, HOME OF OUR DING DONG HIMSELF, MSSR. ZIMMERMANN!!!, poutine holy fucking HECK god bless poutine (if you think it’s gross i already don’t like you sorry 100000% NOT SORRY. jack and ransom love some good ass poutine oKEEEEER), a rly good music scene (osheaga music festival is top notch), essentially a canadian paris except people speak quebecois not france-french (but you can get away with it in most respects, there’s differences but the foundations are the same, bc DUH they’re the same language but essentially different dialects, KIND OF similar to mandarin and cantonese (although that particular case has more nuances than this one but you get the idea))
newfoundland and labrador (NL)
neighbour to QB, capital city st. john’s (not to be confused with saint john, NB...yeah there’s another province w almost the EXACT SAME CITY NAME sigh i know it’s dumb and rude) i’ve never really been to the east coast so idk what to tell you but LOBSTER and FISHING and WEIRD FUCKIN ACCENTS, another coastal place so it’s p weird and hippy dippy, but i’ve only ever heard that they’re lovely people, often referred to as newfies.
now, the maritime provinces....starting with new brunswick (NB)
just south of QB, capital city fredericton, v small in comparison to other canadian provinces (as u can tell), again don’t know much about NB but i know they’re big on fish and are basically Maine The Second (they’re pressed right up against maine so, it’s basically maine
nova scotia (NS)
south-ish of NB, capital city halifax, HOME TO THE REAL LIFE DING DONG OF MY HEART, MISTER 87, SIDNEY CROSBY, a full on island, full of wonderful kind people a la mister crosby himself (honestly, it’s just a bunch of super kind people), really cool coastal scenery with amazing seafood (as you’d expect), home of the city that many a traveller has confused for sydney australia, very old-fashioned (idk how to explain???) but just like...you feel like you’re in a storybook when you’re there, lots of lighthouses, overall a v nice place to be
prince edward island (PEI)
the teeny-tiniest place in all of canada i’m certain, north-east-ish of NB and NS, capital city charlottetown, honestly i’m running out of things to say, it’s exactly like NB and NS had a baby that never grew out of infancy it’s so small.
now onto the TERRITORIES which are all up north...yukon (YT)
pronounced YOU-CON, north of BC, east of alaska, capital city whitehorse, cold as heck (tundra baby!!), extremely expensive living conditions ($9 for a 2L of milk, $18 for some fuckin apples...absolute fuckin robbery), lots of hunting and fishing goes on up here (aka lots of people hunt/prepare their own food), lots of mountains and such, v beautiful.
northwest territories (NT)
above AB and SK, capital city yellowknife, used to be bigger but then it was divided up (creating the new territory nunavut), v similar to yukon but with less mountain and more lakes, again v cold bc TUNDRA, my cousin met her husband while working in yellowknife...she’s from MB and he’s from ENGLAND aka what kinda fucking fateful BS...amazing, p cool w lots of islands and such far up north, it’s neat and suuuper beautiful in the summer (so many flowers lksdfjlskad)
nunavut (NU)
pronounced NEW-NUH-VUH-T, north of MB, capital city iqaluit (pronounced EE-CAL-EW-IT) used to be part of NT but they separated into two territories circa 1999, again v similar to the other territories, beautiful scenery with an OBSCENE amount of islands (colouring in maps was always a fucking DOOZY), again, not much to say. just a rly lovely place.
WOO congrats if you read all that lmao now lets get into some other stuff!!
our thanksgiving is in october, the second monday in october to be exact. it’s only been a thing since like??? the 60s??? like it’s a brand new concept, essentially, and i’m not even 100% sure why we have thanksgiving but we do (it’s mostly a charade, thanksgiving means nothing in canada, it’s a completely arbitrary reason to be grateful and eat some fuckin turkey) (jack and ransom both support arbitrary turkey holidays)
canada’s national sport is actually, like, officially lacrosse?????? i know what the fuck (i bet ransom follows lacrosse)
marriage equality has been a thing since 2005 (doesn’t mean jack wasn’t excited about the USA, just, not quite as overcome as bitty was)
winnie the pooh? based on a real bear from winnipeg, MB. yeah, be fuckin jealous y’all
if you didn’t know canada has universal health care. it’s pretty fucking rad.
idk if this is Too Obvious but canada has two official languages, english and french, so all of our packaging/instructions has to be in both languages. everything. from toothpaste to trampolines. everything. signage is a bit more dicey, most trans-canada highway signs are in both languages but more rural/urban ones probably aren’t (jack gets thrown off still when he instinctively looks for the french translations on packaging for nothing to be found. it happens more than you think)
oh also?? we used british spelling, meaning we add a bunch of ‘u’s where they don’t really need to be. this is 100% a point of contention between bitty and jack.
CANADA IS METRIC. IT’S RLY SIMPLE PALS. everything is in groups of 10s. 10 millimetres = 1 centimetre. 100 centimetres = 1 metre. 1000 metres = 1 kilometre (aka how we measure speed, km/hour) you get it? (the prefixes, ie. milli, centi, kilo, are huge helpful hints)
the exception to this is baking measurements??? unlike the UK we couldn’t escape the wrath of cups and teaspoons and all those other arbitrary measurement devices. we still use those (for the most part)
we use fucking celsius okay (except on ovens, mostly because they’re american distributed machines ergo run in fahrenheit) anyway it’s p straightforward:
celsius is in relation to water temperature, ergo, 0 degrees celsius is waters freezing point, anything below that is freezing (relatively, of course), anything above it is not. this is especially useful for discussing weather, as, y’know, most people typically use temperature for (outside of the kitchen and hospitals, that is)
+20? nice summer day. -40? typical MB winter, +30? typical fuckin central canada summer, +7? dependent on where you live it could either mean SHORTS!! (central canada) or a light jacket (west coast), again it’s all relative to your acclimatization
okay i think this is long enough!! here’s some random nostalgic things that ransom and holster def remember/love dearly
i pray with all my heart that jack has this funny little soft spot for ‘corner gas’ in the same way i do (it’s a canadian prairie sitcom CLASSIC and i love it SO MUCH)
jack and ransom both have a strange crush on rick mercer
MO FUCKIN FRAGGLE ROCK BIIIIITCH
ransom definitely had some misconceptions about what being 16 would be like because of this fuckin show (he also 100% did the air guitar to the theme song)
this show meant a whole heck of a lot to lil bb jack (who 100% watched cartoons in english AND french okay????)
ALSO (i think i mentioned this in the last post but!!) ransom grew up watching caillou in english, jack in french, and they argue all the time about the differences between the two.
ransom remembers being a little bab watching this nonsense right before bed with a cup of warm milk and exactly two oreos (just me??? pshhh i don’t believe it)
jack had very strategically thought out how he would destroy his competitors at this game show
jack loved babar. don’t even touch me. just. imagine tiny jacques w a lil stuffed elephant my hearT!!!!!
ALSO MCFUCKING T’CHOUPI ET DOUDOU!!!!!! i watched this one in english but i can only imagine jack loved it
okay. okay. again, thank u for reading, i hope this was helpful!! lemme know if there’s anything i missed!! who knows, i might make a third installment one day!?!??!

Raw Honesty
When I wake up tomorrow it will be two days until I fly out of this beautiful country and begin a new adventure. Leaving Brisbane has become so difficult because of how situated and comfortable I’ve become, and although I’m cutting this adventure short, I know that Australia has served an incredible purpose for me and changed me as a person. Today at work I was speaking about what I was going to miss, and all I could say is that I hope that who I am right now sticks with me and that I don’t ever revert to who I was when I first landed. When I first landed in Australia I was critical, insecure, quick to compare, quick to judge, and underneath all of the positive photos and videos, I was unhappy. I came to this country with a person that I didn’t trust, who I felt never truly communicated with me, and someone that was very different from me in a lot of very important ways. That isn’t to say that the end of our relationship was one sided, because it definitely wasn’t, but it took the relationship ending to realize just how different myself and that person are, and what that relationship turned me into. I hope that I can go home and continue to feel this enlightened and positive, and I hope that I can continue to feel this much love towards myself and towards others. I want to be able to radiate positivity and continue to help and inspire other people. I want to travel to different countries and cities, I want to feel small in art galleries, and I want to feel every emotion as thoroughly as possible. I want to continue to work on this relationship that I have with myself, and I want to come out of this the best possible version of myself that I can. Leaving Brisbane is so bittersweet, but I couldn’t be more excited to live in New West, see suspension bridges, see lighthouses, travel to the sea wall, sit in cute coffee shops, sit on rocky beaches, get caught in cold rain, and meet amazing new people. In a lot of ways I feel unsettled and uncomfortable leaving Brisbane, but I want to channel those emotions and those feelings, let them visit, and feel confident with my decision to leave.
Today when I was trying to explain how it feels to leave, I found the perfect analogy. Leaving feels like Spring. As I sat in a bar tonight and I explained this feeling to my Australian friends, I realized that it’s something so beautiful that I have taken for granted every single time that I’ve experienced it. A Canadian winter is a challenging thing - especially in Alberta. The sky goes dark, the air is dry and cold, the wind is sharp, the snow on the ground turns brown from the cars, it’s dark in the morning when you leave your house and it’s dark in the evening when you come home from work. There are days where you don’t see the sun, you don’t go outside, and you’re stuck in your apartment and in your head. Your music taste changes, your mood changes, and socializing and doing activities becomes more difficult. But then Spring comes. The weather gets warmer and the sun comes out from behind clouds. The snow melts off of the road, and you start to see all of the things that the snow has been covering for the last six months. You walk outside wearing a hoodie or a tshirt, your music becomes more positive, and all of the days that you felt mentally exhausted just seem so worthwhile. You walk to the beat of the music you’re listening to, and when you see a thin layer of ice with water underneath it, you step on the ice and let the water break through the cracks, and it’s somehow one of the most satisfying things you might ever do. Not only is that the perfect analogy for how I feel, but I realized that it might be one of my favourite feelings that in the past I’ve taken for granted.
I wanted to make a blog post and talk about all of the amazing things that I’ve done over the past few days, but instead I hope that when I read back on this post I remember how I feel in this exact moment while I’m writing this. I want to focus on this feeling and I want to remember how at terms I feel in this exact moment with going home. I want to remember how much thought I put into this decision, and how important the people at home are to me. I messaged my best friend tonight and I initially let her know that I was thankful to my ex for what he’s put me through. I wanted to thank him for handling himself so poorly, and for breaking the person who did so much for him and tried so hard for him, because it ultimately made me realize who I am, what makes me happy, and how capable I am. But then I realized that he’s not responsible for this growth. He’s not responsible for the success that I made out of this journey, and he’s not responsible for the self love and self appreciation I feel right now. I hope this feeling continues to grow, and stays for good.
We received news from the doctors back home with my aunt, and they’re saying that she’s exhibiting signs of the final days of her life. She’s exhausted, sleeping most of the time, unable to eat, confused, and unable to hold extensive conversations. I know that it will break my heart if she passes before I make it home, but I also know that it’s her wish for me to travel and see as much as I possibly can. She wasn’t able to travel as much as she wanted to, and a huge part of me moving to the Rocky Mountains is because of her. Her last wish was to be able to go to British Columbia and enjoy the mountains and the beautiful scenery just one more time. She never made it and she never will. But I can make it, and I can go and I can take it all in the way that she wanted to, and I know that she can live on through me. I know that experiencing this loss will be hard for me, but I also know that as much as I want her to stay and be a part of my life, it isn’t fair of me to wish that anymore.
Tonight I planned a trip to Toronto the see my best friend. I couldn’t be more excited to see him and I couldn’t be more excited to explore a new city. I’ve only been to Toronto once while I was being trained for work, and I didn’t see or do much because I was so intimidated by the city. I am so excited to go back with a different mentality and see an amazing city, full of amazing people. Tonight we worked out the details and we’re going to rent a car, go to New York City (where I’ve never been!), see Niagra Falls, and do as much as we possibly can. I am so excited to have so many trips planned, and to see as much of Canada as I possibly can.
I’ve made an amazing list of things to see and do while I’m in Calgary for ten days, and I can’t wait to approach the city I’ve lived in for my entire life - as a tourist. I want to see as much as I possibly can, and do as much as I possibly can in those ten days. I am so excited to see all of the amazing people that make up that city, and I am so excited to make so many new memories with all of you before I leave to Vancouver. I am so excited to see my old coworkers, to see my best friends, celebrate birthdays, celebrate a life, get tea at my favourite tea house, and tell/ show everyone in my life how much I appreciate them and how much I value their presence in my life.
I am so thankful to every single person who has sent me a message, called me, FaceTimed me, came over in the middle of the night when I wasn’t sure that I was going to make it, and just loved me unconditionally. I am so thankful for all of the people who didn’t give up on me, and who believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. I am so grateful for this new perspective, and I am so grateful to love so many people so openly and fully because of this.
To the person who decided that I wasn’t even worth a text message, when throughout the entirety of our relationship that was the only communication you could offer me - I don’t resent you. I don’t resent you for deciding that you didn’t love me anymore, and I don’t resent you for leaving a relationship that didn’t make you happy anymore. You were entitled to those feelings and to make those decisions. That being said, I will forgive you for how you handled yourself, but I will never think that it was okay. I don’t think that you’re a good person. I don’t think that you’re mature enough to understand the consequences of your actions, and I don’t believe that a birthday makes you any older than you’ve proven you are. I will never be your friend, I will never be here for you, and I will never again feel any love towards you. I hope that one day you truly understand what you put another person through, because you wanted to focus on yourself. I hope you one day realize the other ways you could have done what you did, all while exercising compassion and care for another person. I’m not sad anymore, I’m numb towards you. I feel nothing when I hear your name, I feel nothing when I think about our relationship. I hope one day that passes and that I can look at you as an experience that made me grow, but for now I forgive your actions, even though I can’t understand them. One day I think you will understand how much you owed me a face to face conversation - but you will never see me again and you don’t deserve to.
Two days until this beautiful adventure with myself begins. Two days until a new chapter starts, and this chapter comes to a close.

Taking an advertising and marketing direction session along with a qualified firm or possibly instructor enables for a gentler posture to these originalities and also likewise an additional appointment knowledge.
There remain in simple fact a ton of programs along with core curricula located upon the approach of A Course in Miracles, and likewise certain courses on crucial Course concepts, like True Forgiveness or even perhaps Cause along with Effect. The one that requires to deal with is in fact influenced similarly a whole lot as the one that needs to need to need to be really removed, if certainly not much more extremely! You can easily forgive the crook whether he chats along with for mercy and also not. This will absolutely be the astonishingly initial of the miracles that is authorized and likewise gotten through the electrical power of compassion determined from A Course In Miracles.

She as well as additionally her aides generated mentors that filled up manies uninhabited site over a timespan of 7 years which later ended up being actually "A Course In Miracles."
A trademark of the ACIM training course is in fact that wicked on its own carries out most definitely certainly not exist. The ACIM coaches advise that through educating your thought and feelings suitably, you might very easily find out that there is really no such facet as monstrous, as well as additionally that it is really merely a point of view or even a single point that individuals have actually really indicated as much as inhibit in addition to also handle the activities as well as notions of those who are really surely not with the potential of presuming for on their own. ACIM recommends that the only point that accomplishes exist is actually really right interest along with that innocent notions as well as also mentally perfect thinking are going to certainly not permit more or less practically anything like worthless to exist.
These recommendations and also additionally sees agitated a bunch of individuals that involved a considerable amount of the significant faiths since, while they upheld an amount of the similar standards, this training system additionally searched for to possess people definitely believe that improbity is actually truly undoubtedly not real and also because of that wrong is actually on top of that unbelievable. ACIM on its own develops an attempt to possess individuals rely on the solemnity and also additionally a truly good tip scenery and also furthermore habits as well as also in the straightforward fact that definitely nothing whatsoever may just hurt you unless you feel that it can. Alternative authorizations were in fact user-friendly onto these concepts dued to the fact that numerous of the New Age faiths are in fact situated out unsuitable together with atonement having said that, the energy of one's astonishingly own thoughts as well as likewise sensation.

A Course in Miracles is a variety of self-study materials discharged by the Foundation for Inner Peace. The publication's net information generalizes, and likewise reveals mercy as administered day-to-day online. Oddly, no area carries out the file possess a writer (in addition to it is actually truly hence described without an author's label as a result of the U.S. Library of Congress). Having mentioned that, the sms message was developed through Helen Schucman (decayed) and also similarly William Thetford; Schucman has really attached that manual's info is actually based upon interactions to her originating from an "values" she professed was really Jesus. The preliminary model of the publication was actually really discharged in 1976, along with a tweaked variant released in 1996. Facet of the part is actually a mentor introduction, along with additionally an apprentice book. As a result of the simple fact that the truly 1st edition, the manual has in fact used various many thousand paireds, along with analyses in to almost two-dozen international foreign languages.
Overview's begins might be mapped back to the very early 1970s; Helen Schucman initially expertises together with the "principles" produced her after that administrator, William Thetford, to seek advice coming from Hugh Cayce at the Association for Research along with Enlightenment. Inevitably, an outline to Kenneth Wapnick (at some point guide's author) occurred. Presently of the introduction, Wapnick was actually professional psycho specialist. After assessment, Schucman as well as also Wapnik committed over a year individualizing the part along with modifying. An added guide, this chance of Schucman, Wapnik, and also Thetford to Robert Skutch aside from Judith Skutch Whitson, of the Foundation for Inner Peace. The 1st postings of resource for blood stream circulation kept in 1975. Ever since, copyright judicial proceeding as a result of the Foundation for Inner Peace, in addition to Penguin Books, has in fact created that the world wide web material of the rather 1st edition keeps in everybody domain.
A Course in Miracles is actually a direction gadget; the guideline training course possesses 3 publications, a 622-page text, a 478-page apprentice book, and also similarly an 88-page teachers guide. The world wide web product of A Course in Miracles handle both the academic along with the operational, although procedure of the publication's component is actually nervous. Not either the book neither the Course in Miracles is actually proposed to accomplish the customers's knowing; merely, the parts are actually really a start.
A Course in Miracles varies in between understanding as well as additionally tip; truth resides in fact strict in addition to additionally unlimited, while perspective remains in reality the world of possibility, modification, and also in addition analysis. The world of point of view enhances the prevalent ideas in our notions, as well as likewise maintains our team distinct emerging from the fact, as well as also various originating coming from God.
Social networking site looks like just about anything in this entire world, i.e., forecasted thought as well as likewise experiences together with the particulars of the vanity improper notions. Online strikes in the location for A Course in Miracles (ACIM) are with the different opinions, costs determine as well as additionally an assortment of other notifications where our company reply to our interpretation which then winds up being actually the acknowledgment for our response (T-12. I. 1) or our trigger for providing, and so on. All students possess a traditional problem in between kind as well as also internet information in addition to what it implies to join hence enable's undoubtedly not sugary foods coat it: Social media is actually forms (projected material of the self-pride inappropriate mind) from leading the improper mind. Coming up coming from the beginning it is actually a set of assaults till our crew do away with in addition to begin identifying (joining) along with the best idea as well as emotions.
Additionally in the Course, our professionals all kick back online together with some sort of a digital product mindlessly performing our honor aspect. Okay, some may be rising, passing time or even throwing:
Resting around in addition to in addition defining the Course is really not the identical adjustable as executing the effort of analyzing the text along with additionally placing the guidelines right in to process to create what the Course suggests (Kenneth Wapnick, Rules for Decision).
In the similar Rules, Wapnick similarly reveals, "What provides the self-pride its own individual energy is your having in simple fact followed it, your identification arising from it." Types are actually forecasted as a security versus the opposite and in addition are only in addition to the self-pride unreliable thoughts along with also for that reason they carry out certainly not matter.
Dued to the fact that social networking sites is in fact all stressing designs which are shabby price quotes of the vanity, our group reside in simple fact after that checking out the Sonship as shaggy that produces the oversight genuine. Specialness is actually valued as an idolizer placed before the Love of God in addition to those referred to variations keep the separation in the mind. Undoubtedly any kind of kind of damaged top quality our group assess in an extra online (or even anywhere) needs to have to be found in every of the Sonship due to the fact that our workers're actually One. That remains in fact why assault isn't specific and requires to become in fact surrendered (T-7. VI.1).
Certain procedures, "Individually unique and also details." All strike in any type of type of kind of kind is those very same as well as additionally is symbolized to divide the of the Sonship as a result of the truth that it attacks (particles) the Sonship utilizing varieties in contrast to. When it is actually precisely a Course settled in unity, our pros might locate why Wapnick is going to absolutely discuss that it is really outrageous to use the Course as a thing.
Allow's feature set of various other terms representative representation analyses considering that these are in simple fact each used throughout the Course:
Explain: Clearly existing the life and also fact of one thing along with using documents or even maybe proof.
Recommendation: A factor that causes an individual to remember the main thing.
Unloving Reminders
In the Course, "To instructor is really to found (M-in.2) along with our crew remain in reality continuously coaching, or even maybe confirming the narcissism or even God every nanosecond, i.e., the fully satisfied thoughts besides which our team have decided on to learn or perhaps join. For contrast, the internet content of the self-pride is in fact various forecasted and likewise different kinds; and additionally the relevant information of the greatest notions is actually really oneness, sameness, i.e., Love (no projections).
Our sibling or sisters are a member folks. They are the ones that reveal our company that our provider are actually for our finding is in fact an outcome of what our pros have informed each of each of all of them (T-9. VI.3) - the narcissism or even God - frequently. As the daydreamer of the aspiration (T-27. VII.), our unbiased amounts (those online along with our team and our bros) are actually definitely performing what our experts are hoping they are actually completing based upon what our team've coached (legitimized). They are actually upright considering that it is our requirement. Our professionals revealed splitting up or even a savage strike thought versus God as a result our experts all reveal mentioned attack in a lot of rough kinds. If our staff eliminate our own selves of what our organisation have in reality taught (selected for) as withstood to striking, our group uncover who our provider are by means of our brother or sisters that are definitely the same.
Throughout the world, people accumulate together with various other comparable pupils to read through the Course alongside each other so concerning a lot better recognize the Course's info. Within this moment framework of likewise social as well as electronic media, A Course in Miracles may ideally reside in reality gotten inside digital magazine design, on Compact Disc, as correctly as with means of apple iphone Apps. There are truly a great deal of instructions as effectively as key educational program located upon the tactic of A Course in Miracles, and likewise specific sessions on important Course pointers, like True Forgiveness or even Cause as well as Effect. A Course in Miracles is actually an instruction unit; the training course possesses 3 publications, a 622-page text message, a 478-page student book, and also likewise an 88-page instructors travel book. Our group might locate why Wapnick is going to definitely mention that it is in fact ridiculous to make use of the Course as a device when it's specifically a Course installed in uniformity.
There are actually in fact a whole lot of programs as properly as primary course of study based upon the method of A Course in Miracles, as well as also certain courses on essential Course ideas, such as True Forgiveness or even perhaps Cause in enhancement to Effect. A Course in Miracles is in fact a guideline unit; the guideline course has 3 magazines, a 622-page text notification, a 478-page student manual, as properly as furthermore an 88-page coaches handbook. Our professionals might discover why Wapnick will absolutely state that it is in fact unbearable to utilize the Course as a product when it is in fact specifically a Course settled in whole.
There are actually truly an excellent bargain of instructions as appropriately as main informative course found upon the technique of A Course in Miracles, as well as additionally details trainings on important Course tips, such as True Forgiveness or also Cause as effectively as Effect. Our crew could find why Wapnick is going to most definitely specify that it is in fact crazy to utilize the Course as a resource when it's exactly a Course placed in oneness.

Poutine at Bergham
Canadian Cuisine
While there are many different reasons why you should visit Canada for your next vacation, one reason is the varied cuisine. Canadian cuisine is influenced by its multiculturalism. Many of Canada’s major cities have a Chinatown, Greektown, Little Italy, Little Portugal, Little India, and Little Korea where you can enjoy foods of that culture. Canada is famous for its native dishes and foods such as maple syrup, Canadian (back) bacon, Montreal bagels (and smoked meat!), Nova Scotia lobster rolls, PEI mussels, Malpeque oysters, tourtiere, Nanaimo bars and butter tarts. No matter how fussy an eater you are, you will be able to find something that gets your taste buds salivating. In the province of Quebec, you will find cuisine influenced by its French heritage. Two Quebecois specialties include poutine, which is basically French fries with cheese curds, covered in delicious gravy and Beavertails, which are fried dough pastry topped with whipped cream, cinnamon or chocolate hazelnut. You might be slightly skeptical at first, but give these dishes a try. You won’t regret it!
Friendly Canadians
It is well known globally that Canadians are among some of the friendliest and happiest people you will ever meet. Many people, including Canadians, joke that a Canadian’s favourite word is ‘sorry’ because they are so polite and just can’t do enough to help you out. Therefore, if you are lost and need to ask for directions, don’t worry about asking a local for assistance. Canadians are used to the influx of tourists and will be happy to help. You are sure to feel welcome in Canada as it is a melting pot of religions, races and cultures, so you should feel right at home.
The Four Seasons in Canada
One of the best things about making Canada your next vacation destination is it is a country you can visit at any time of the year. While it is well known for its harsh winters which make skiing and snow holidays very popular, it also has very warm, sunny summers to offer its visitors. For instance, temperatures in the summer can range from 25C to 35C. The four distinct seasons in Canada offer you unique experiences depending on what time of year you visit. We have already mentioned the stellar skiing conditions in B.C. and Alberta for winter sports lovers. Summertime is another great time to explore Canada, particularly at popular national parks such as Thousand Islands National Park , Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and Banff National Park. However, if you get a chance to visit during autumn, then you will witness some of the most stunning fall colour offering burnt orange, mustard and copper tones. The autumn views on the Agawa Canyon Tour Train in northern Ontario are spectacular. They truly are postcard perfect scenes!
The Architecture
The architecture in Canada is often overlooked, but it is among some of the most impressive across the globe. When you think about impressive architecture and unforgettable buildings, Canada probably doesn’t spring to mind initially. But each city and region of this country has a unique type of architecture to offer. Whether architecture is something that interests you or not, you are sure to be impressed by the outdoor staircases on many houses in Montreal or the Victorian-era industrial buildings in Toronto’s Distillery District. One of the most notable buildings in Toronto is the iconic CN tower, which receives approximately two million visitors every year. Check out this recent visit to 360 Restaurant at the top of the CN Tower.

Road Trips
If you enjoy a road trip and like travelling from one city to the next, then Canada is the vacation destination for you. The country is home to one of the most beautiful drives in the world – the Icefields Parkway – a four-hour drive that takes you on a tour of some of the most picturesque views in the country, including Bow Glacier Falls, Peyto Lake, Mistaya Canyon and Crowfood Glacier. If you have longer to dedicate to a road trip, then you should consider the 10-hour drive from Calgary to Vancouver where you’ll see Moraine Lake, Glacier National Park, Takkakaw Falls and Emerald Lake, to get a real taste of the Canadian landscape or the eight-hour drive along the majestic Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia.
Canada Is Different from the U.S.
Often Canada is compared to neighbouring America, which isn’t a fair representative of the country in any way. Instead, the two countries are unique and distinct destinations with different cultures, histories and traditions. Canada is much more tolerant of people of different cultures and religions and has much less crime due to stricter gun control laws. Canadian citizens are less aggressive than U.S. citizens and the cities and subways in Canada are cleaner than in the U.S. Therefore, you shouldn’t assume that if you have been to the United States that you have experienced all that Canada has to offer.
Those are only eight reasons to visit Canada. If you get the opportunity to visit, then you should definitely take advantage of it. Whether you are travelling as a family who likes to explore outdoor activities, or you are a couple looking for a vacation that offers arts, food and culture, Canada is the best destination for you. Canada truly offers the full package for every type of traveller.

The Best Things to Do in Oregon Coast
Oregon Coast runs from north to south, making the western border of the US state of Oregon. Sitting along the Pacific Ocean, Oregon Coast stretches about 362 miles from the Columbia River in its northern part to the California state border in the south. One of the most diverse regions in the US, Oregon Coast has three sub-districts with its own rich history and culture. Even without any legal boundaries, locals consider their region to have North Coast, Central Coast, and South Coast.
The most amazing thing Oregon can share with the world was the Oregon Beach Bill of 1967, which allows free beach access to everyone. This allows private beach landowners to keep their beach but removes their tax obligations. In exchange, the beach landowners will allow pedestrians to have easy access to the beach. Preventing beach landowners from building on the beach is one of the greatest highlights in this bill. And the results of their dedication to having a pristine coastline are clearly evident today.
Oregon coastlines remain free and public, without any hassles from commercial buildings and other establishments in the beach. Which only means one thing; people can really enjoy their time in the sand and comb the beach for agates or glass floats. If you really want to be with the beach and waves, Oregon Coast is a perfect rejuvenating destination.

So Long, New York and L.A.! Here Are the Cities Luring (and Losing) the Most Americans
milanadzic/iStock; realtor.com
Whatever happened to American wanderlust? Manifest destiny? Hitting the road?
The fact is, Americans are less likely to pack up their belongings and relocate now than at any point in recorded history: Only about 11% moved to new homes last year, the lowest rate recorded since the government started keeping track 70 years ago. This includes a drop in the number of folks moving to new homes in the same state, as well as those moving across state lines.
Why are more people staying put? Part of it is due to the torrent of millennials, with their mountains of debt and shifting job prospects.
“It is a tough time for people in their 20s. … It takes young people five to six years longer now to get out of the house compared with previous generations,” says John Cromartie, a geographer at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Then there’s the general aging of the population, with many baby boomers already ensconced in their forever homes.
Make no mistake: The pool of movers may be shrinking, but the country is still going through a period of profound migration—with some places losing and others gaining. And this smaller group of movers is having an enormous impact, since newcomers remain the lifeblood of big housing markets, keeping builders busy and home prices rising.
The realtor.com® data team analyzed migration trends to find the metropolitan areas* gaining the most new residents, and those seeing the biggest population declines. During the recession, Americans flocked to the biggest cities where finding a job was easier. But in the rebounding years, these meccas, such as New York and Los Angeles, have seen housing costs soar and people relocate to more affordable destinations.
“Right now the numbers are showing [people moving] to the West and South, and away from the Northeast and Midwest,” says demographer Ken Gronbach of KGC Direct. “Cities where taxes are low and housing [costs are] reasonable will see a huge influx of people over the next five to 10 years.”
Just because a place ranks high for losing residents doesn’t mean plenty of people aren’t moving there—it’s just that more people are moving out of that market than are coming in. We came up with our ranking by analyzing recently released U.S. Census Bureau population data from 2012 to 2016. We calculated the net migration for every metropolitan area** by measuring the difference between the numbers of residents moving in and those moving out.
So let’s start with the cities attracting newcomers like floodlights attract luna moths!
Cities gaining the most residents

1. Phoenix, AZ
Median list price: $329,975 Increase in new residents**: 37,188 Top place of origin (out of state): Los Angeles, LA
Phoenix, AZ

After years of watching his commute get longer and the price of just about everything in San Bernardino, CA, go up, police officer Brent Wood, 45, had enough. So he and his family sold their modest 1,200-square-foot home; in August, they moved into much larger, three-bedroom digs in Phoenix at the end of a cul-de-sac, all for about the same price. It even came with a large backyard, a big plus for the family and their three dogs.
“Everything has been great since we moved,” says Wood. Phoenix has “clean freeways, friendly people, amazing weather, lower gas prices, and lower food prices.”
The Phoenix region has become a top destination for folks fleeing high-cost West Cost cities.
Phoenix has long been known for its huge retirement communities like Sun City, a 55-plus active community built in the 1960s with golf courses and one-story homes with gated back yards.
But new residents aren’t just retirees and snowbirds. The region’s strong local economy is seeing a number of employers relocate to the area and bring a younger workforce with them. These workers are buying reasonably priced condos within walking distance to light rail.
2. Riverside, CA
Median list price: $389,050 increase in new residents: 30,943 Top place of origin (out of state): New York, NY
Charming two-bedroom home in Riverside
realtor.com
For a lot of Americans, spending $400,000 for a single-family home in the suburbs with a garage and a small yard might sound like a lot of dough. Not for Californians. Riverside has seen a slew of transplants from nearby San Diego and Los Angeles, where median prices are way higher—$657,000 and $725,000, respectively.
“We’re inexpensive in relation to other parts of Southern California,” says Matthew Rundle, a mortgage banker at Westin Mortgage in Riverside. Many of the new residents are midcareer or close to retirement who are cashing out at peak real estate prices.
Aside from reasonable real estate prices, Riverside touts its ample amount of shiny, new homes: New construction makes up 7.7% of all listings here, compared with 4.6% in San Diego.
3. Austin, TX
Median list price: $349,950 increase in new residents: 29,192 Top place of origin (out of state): New York, NY
Austin, TX
RoschetzkyIstockPhoto/iStock
The capital of Texas has done something that very few tech hot spots have managed to pull off lately: keeping home prices from reaching astronomical heights. While locals may bemoan high price tags, they’re still just a fraction of those in Silicon Valley, where the median for homes is $1.1 million. Helped out by lots of new construction, prices here have fallen 4.1% year over year.
The jobs and affordable homes are attracting hordes of millennials and Gen Xers. They’re coming primarily from San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Houston.
And they’re snapping up new condos near downtown as well as newly constructed single-family homes out in the suburbs. In Manor, TX, just 20 minutes outside of Austin, buyers can find plenty of new, four-bedroom homes priced under $250,000. More than half are new, which is one of the reasons realtor.com named it one of America’s 10 fastest-growing suburbs.
4. Houston, TX
Median list price: $310,050 increase in new residents: 29,098 Top place of origin (out of state): New York, NY
Austin, TX

Houston, TX

Hurricane Harvey devastated parts of Houston, causing billions of dollars in damages. But that destruction hasn’t slowed the number of folks moving to the nation’s fourth-largest city for its many good-paying jobs, particularly in the oil and gas industries. In fact, the Houston metro added 111,200 jobs in the 12 months following the storm.
“They’re not moving here for the climate or the scenery. It’s for work, “says Greg Nino, a real estate agent with Re/Max Compass in Houston.
The vast majority of newcomers are millennials or Gen Xers, who are buying big $300,000 to $400,000 new, single-family homes in the city or surrounding suburbs. The ones who still want to live it up a bit are snagging three-story townhomes near downtown priced around $350,000.
5. Orlando, FL
Median list price: $299,950 increase in new residents: 26,635 Top place of origin (out of state): New York, NY
Orlando, FL
rgaydos/iStock
Home to Mickey, former home to Shamu, and a tourist magnet to the world, Orlando is aggressively moving beyond the vacation trade. High-paying jobs in medical sciences and technology fields, along with reasonable real estate prices and lots of sunny weather, are snagging more and more young residents. Orlando’s even becoming cool (relatively speaking).
Many transplants are coming from the Northeast, including New York and New Jersey, says local real estate agent Rose Kemp. She’s also seen quite a few Puerto Ricans moving in after Hurricane Maria devastated the U.S. territory.
This influx of newcomers means builders are busy. Orlando has a number of three- and four-bedroom homes going up in new subdivisions in the region. In Lake Nona, a new community, buyers can find three-bedroom homes priced around $400,000 with access to pools and state-of-the-art fitness centers.
The rest of the top 10 metros where the most folks are moving to include Dallas; Las Vegas; Columbia, SC; Tampa, FL; and Charlotte, NC.
OK? Now let’s take a tour of the places people are leaving in droves.
Metros losing the most residents

1. New York, NY

Leaving New York
luza studios/iStock
America’s largest city is more than just a place so nice they named it twice: It’s also the one that sees the most residents coming and going. They come for the excitement and the gigs; they leave because of sky-high housing prices (and let’s not even talk about the subways). But in recent years those leaving have outpaced those coming. They’re headed to lower-priced cities like Miami, Philadelphia, and Atlanta (in that order).
So what impact will the arrival of new Amazon headquarters in the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens have on this equation? Time will tell. On the plus side, the company is adding 25,000 well-paying jobs; on the minus, prices in the area are already surging.
It all contributes to the famous Big Apple churn.
“Unless you have an unlimited budget, you’ll need to make a sacrifices eventually,” says Gary Malin, president of the New York real estate brokerage Citi Habitats. “Not everyone wants to be in the city forever. … The hustle of city life and the costs can get old.”
2. Los Angeles, CA
Median list price: $725,050 Decrease in residents: -108,421 Top destination (out of state): Phoenix, AZ
Getting of LA… eventually.
peeterv/iStock
For many, the gorgeous beaches, incredible year-round weather, and general fabulosity of this West Coast mecca make it a certain kind of American ideal. But like New York, it both attracts and repels residents. Lately it’s doing more of the latter.
High real estate costs have pushed folks farther and farther out of the city, making commutes more grueling and longer than ever. An April analysis by the realtor.com data team found that only 1 in 3 Los Angeles homes were within a middle-class household’s price range. That’s led the typical L.A. driver to spend more than 100 hours per year in freeway congestion, the highest in the nation, according to INRIX, a transportation analytics firm.
So who’s leaving? Mostly folks in their 40s and above who are taking off for states like Texas, Arizona, and Nevada, where real estate prices are lower, the economies are strong, and the weather is still warm. Those moving in tend to come from the Northeast, like New York and New Jersey, where they’re used to high prices and are looking for better weather (way better).
Perhaps a slowing real estate market in L.A. will help to stop the outflow of residents. Home prices are still up 3.5% year over year. However, the number of properties experiencing price cuts surged 76% in November. Meanwhile, inventory climbed 27% year over year, giving buyers more choices.
3. Chicago, IL
Median list price: $285,000 Decrease in residents: -100,348 Top destination (out of state): Houston, TX
Frozen rivers or warmer climate?
Shelly Bychowski/iStock
Once they hit retirement, many baby boomers are saying goodbye to the Windy City and hello to the mild winters in Arizona, Florida, and Texas. This is the biggest group leaving Chicago.
But they aren’t just headed out because of the cold. Property tax bills keep getting bigger in Chicago, including the latest hike over the summer. Fun fact: Illinois has the second-highest property tax rate in country, with only homeowners in New Jersey paying more, according to ATTOM Data Solutions, a real estate data firm. When folks leave the area, that creates a bigger budget shortfall and creates still more tax increases.
“We have great jobs here, but Chicago is getting expensive,” says Scott Curcio, a broker at Coldwell Banker in Chicago.
That could explain why they’re going to affordable Houston, where home prices are reasonable and the mercury doesn’t drop into negative temperature territory.
4. Detroit, MI
Median list price: $226,300 Decrease in residents: -38,161 Top destination (out of state): Phoenix, AZ
Detroit, MI
Steven_Kriemadis/iStock
Even as long-downtrodden Detroit continues to lurch toward a real revival, the region still faces a number of challenges. That’s what happens when a population falls from 1.8 million in the 1950s to below 700,000 today.
And despite a surge in new development and new jobs, residents are still leaving the city. Some are recent graduates heading to healthier cities, some are retirees heading for the Sunshine State or Arizona. And the region is losing residents to other Michigan metros like Lansing, a little more than an hour away, and Grand Rapids, two hours away.
But it’s not all doom and gloom in the Motor City.
Some middle-aged and young professionals who grew up in Detroit are now moving back after seeing development of restaurants and nightlife in downtown, says Thomas Nanes, a real estate agent at Community Choice Realty Detroit. They’re buying everything from condos in converted warehouses to dirt-cheap, fixer-uppers in the burbs for under $75,000.
5. Washington, DC
Median list price: $430,050 Decrease in residents: -35,083 Top destination (out of state): Houston, TX
DC gridlock
hroe/iStock
The nation’s capital region is well-accustomed to turnover. Case in point: In January 2017, when President Donald Trump took office, he ushered in a new army of federal employees. Meanwhile, many of the Obama-era folks took new jobs in other cities.
Plus, the city is packed with 20- and 30-somethings working for nonprofits, newsrooms, and political campaigns, who don’t stay forever. While working here they rent bedrooms in colorful row homes in the Dupont Circle neighborhood with a gaggle of roomies—or they rent apartments in large buildings in nearby burbs such as Arlington, VA. But after a few years learning the ropes and paying their dues, many of these young folks take off for other cities.
“On Capitol Hill people are working 50 to 60 hours a week in an intense and exciting environment,” says Cromartie, the USDA geographer who studies population trends. “But that life is very much for younger people who then move on and up [and out].”
The decline in population isn’t happening all over the region. In fact, the city of DC on its own saw a positive jump in the number of folks moving in. It was the surrounding suburbs that saw declines. However, that’s likely to change when Amazon opens its second headquarters in Crystal City, VA, just outside of the capital.
The rest of the top 10 metros where the most folks are moving away include San Diego; Anchorage, AK; Philadelphia; Miami; and Boston.
* A metropolitan statistical area is a designation that includes the urban core of a city and the surrounding smaller towns and cities. Census had data only for around 400 metros.
** We subtracted the number of incoming residents from the number of outgoing residents. This figure is the metro’s net migration. The count did..

I guess heartbreak is just a part of growing up.
And I’ve only just gotten to the part of “life” where I’m supposed to learn that now. But because I’m just now approaching it, it feels more like the things that matter most to me - you know, the things that really truly matter but you just don’t realize it on a day to day basis - are being taken away.
With the news of Avicii’s passing today, I was taken back a bit more than people probably would expect. It’s a celebrity. Just another celebrity. Celebrities have been passing away unexpectedly quite often lately. It could be drugs. Unknown health conditions. Whatever. We never knew them personally, so why does it matter? Why did it matter so much to me when I heard it? Why does it still matter so much to me, and why do I feel so hurt by his passing?
I continued to think about it. I’m currently listening to his BBC 1 essential mix. I looked back at our pictures from 2010. I remembered the moment we first laid eyes on him. We didn’t know who he was. We knew his name, and that was about it. He wasn’t big yet. It was the middle of the day, maybe noon. He wasn’t on the main stage. There weren’t too many people watching him - plenty of room for us to prance around. But as his songs continued playing in the background, my thoughts became feelings, and the one feeling that manifested was simple: it was happiness.
And then I remembered a time, not too long ago, when I was sitting in the car, riding home from somewhere. Jason was driving. I don’t know where we were coming from, but I asked myself this question... if someone were to ask me to describe one instance where I could say I was truly utterly purely happy, when was it? I don’t remember if I came to a decisive answer, or a single occasion, but I remember my thoughts flowing like this:
Society expects you to say some bullshit like “my wedding day” or “the day so-and-so proposed” or “the day we bought our first house” (albeit the day we finally got our keys was pretty thrilling and might be one of the top happiest moments in recent days). But my wedding day was far from the happiest days. I’m talking about PURE JOY. ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY HAPPY, DON’T CARE ABOUT WHAT ANYONE THINKS, JUST YOU AGAINST THE WORLD. And the only moments I could think of were the moments that took me right back to EDC 2010 and EDC 2011.
Um, yeah.
Another question to myself: is there a song that can transport you back to a moment in time, almost instantaneously? and if so, what is it, and what moment does it take you to? The first song is Teenage Crime by Adrian Lux. It takes me back to the moment we stepped foot in front of Avicii’s stage in 2010. Midday sun, beaming down on our sweaty heads. Double fisting Dos Equis. Spinning in circles - we were, not the world. The second song is Alright by Marcus Schossow. Right to the back of Cosmic Gate’s stage in the hot, dry, Vegas wind in 2011. Tall can of Heineken in my hand, camera in the other. The third, Departures by Robbie Rivera. We’re walking across the lawn in 2011, lights flashing, having just drank an obscene amount of an unknown drink that I promised I would never drink again. But we’re dancing across that lawn, so was everyone else.
So the common thread was, we were always happy. And maybe I’m not making any sense anymore and this thought process has become super convoluted... but I’m just so distraught over his passing because someone who basically IGNITED and created music that continued, throughout the years, to bring me so much happiness has basically been taken away from me, and so many others. I listened to his music throughout the rest of 2010. I was still in undergraduate school. I was still taking pre-requisite classes at community college. I was beginning pharmacy school. I was struggling throughout pharmacy school. I went to multiple EDC’s with pharmacy school friends. I drove endless hours listening to Avicii’s songs and his podcasts kept me company during those car rides... hell, they’ve STILL been keeping me company on my car rides to work now, even after graduation and finding a job and buying a new home and getting married. His music was my life’s soundtrack. I grew up with his music. His artistic creation was the soundtrack to my life, ups and downs... whether I realized it or not, he was there in the background day in and day out.
And now, that’s been taken away. And to some people music may not be that significant, but I’ve received so much joy from so many of these moments that have stemmed from what he’s created that it literally breaks my heart to lose such an amazing and talented soul. I probably sound silly. Silly random person, sad about losing someone they’ve never met or known. So many other issues qualms and struggles in life to deal with.
---
Which takes me to my next heartbreak. I love Portland. It’s no secret, seeing as we’ve been there every year the past 3 years. So when the fires raged through the Columbia River Gorge last year, I sat here as tears ran down my face as I saw pictures of the gorge in flames being posted on the PNW Waterfalls group that I follow. This place has held and will always hold a sacred place in my heart. It’s where we’ve always found our escape - it’s almost like our sanctuary - a home away from home, but where things are better and we don’t have to worry about life’s responsibilities. The scenery is greener, the air is cleaner, and to see that destroyed... and to read about why and how it got destroyed just enraged me. Something that meant so much to me, and to so many others, was gone just like that and will likely take decades to restore (and not to mention so much effort). I was so heartbroken. And while Winter has brought some of it back to life, it just isn’t the same, and it won’t be for a while. Why do good things always get taken away?
___
This post was interrupted by approximately 3 day’s time, which in my mind felt more like a day and half’s time, but I’ve lost my train of thought. All I know is that the third and final heartbreak - the one that hits the deepest - is the one that is probably the most seemingly “superficial”. Something that’s planted in young little girls’ minds by Disney videos, and century-old fairy tales - you know, the ones that instill dreams of falling madly in love, and planning a wedding. Oh, the wedding, what a joyous and grandiose idea. It was always just an idea, and in my very own universe, I think it should have honestly stayed one. I received all of the signs from the universe telling me a large party was the exact thing I didn’t need in life (at least my own life) - from the engagement to the very end - horrible, news littered this whole “wedding” timeline. It’s left me with a such a bitter taste in my mouth and I’ve grown very resentful of this “beautiful” wedding. And even the magic of this once in a lifetime experience was taken away from me - my childhood innocence and naivety couldn’t even have this one. Nope, I had to always be aware of life’s harsh realities. Aware of how we’re all just one breath away from death. Aware of practicalities much larger and more important than a ~party~. So, I’m bitter and heartbroken that I couldn’t even enjoy this one experience in life that so many little girls look forward to. I had to grow up stay strong - keep it together - keep my head on my shoulders... all the while planning a huge party, for who? People I never even met before? Who were all of these people? How do you even say their name? WHAT WAS THE POINT IN ALL OF THIS?! WHAT WAS I EVEN DOING?! WHY WAS I WASTING SO MUCH OF MY TIME&ENERGY&LIFE DOING SOMETHING I NO LONGER HAD ANY EMOTIONAL INVESTMENT IN?! All I wanted was my family and friends to be happy. I wanted us to be happy. I just wanted us all to be healthy. And together. Screw the rest. Screw everyone else. Who the fuck needs cake and flowers? Society really is fucked up and it took a lot of time and money for me to realize it. This was life regret #3.
I wanted so badly to run away. You & I. I was in an emotionally bad place.
But the heartbreak is, weddings aren’t what they’re all cracked up to be. No matter how many years of your life you’ve invested in your Pinterest board - none of it mattered anymore... but hindsight is always 20/20.

America’s Musical Journey: Q&A With Brand USA CMO Tom Garzilli
Brand USA, the federally-funded organization that promotes inbound tourism and conventions to America, is getting ready to release its second feature film—this one featuring “the voice of God” himself.
Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman is the narrator of America’s Musical Journey, a co-production of Brand USA, IMAX Films and MacGillivray Freeman Films.
“As perhaps America’s best storyteller, Morgan Freeman’s emotional voice lends empathy to our story of the collision of cultures which has led to America’s many musical creations,” said director Greg MacGillivray.
“Morgan Freeman’s distinctive voice is a national treasure and connects with millions all over the world,” added Tom Garzilli, Chief Marketing Officer of Brand USA. “His soulful narration harmonizes with the sights and sounds of America’s richest cultural centers in a powerful way, driving interest, engagement and intent to visit the USA.”
The 3D documentary is presented by Expedia and will open in select museums and institutions in the U.S. with its official launch on February 16th in Washington, D.C.

A worldwide release schedule will take it to more than 14 markets worldwide over the next three years, including China, Mexico, Canada, France and Australia.
Brand USA is kicking off a new distribution platform with the film’s release: GoUSA TV, a digital TV travel entertainment channel that inspires travel to the USA with best-in class created, curated and licensed video content. GoUSA TV is on Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV as the definitive source for real, authentic, and on-demand video content about travel experiences in the USA.

The new film is a follow-up to 2016’s National Parks Adventure, which was the highest-grossing documentary film of 2016 in the world. That success is a tribute to America’s natural beauty and the epic storytelling of its century-old parks system (and a voice-over by Robert Redford). It continues its run in the U.S. and abroad, including just joining Netflix’s menu.
For its second film, instead of exploring the great outdoors, America’s Musical Journey heads to its cities to take audiences on a journey with Grammy Award-nominated singer-songwriter Aloe Blacc. He serves as a tour guide to the sights and sounds of iconic U.S. cultural and musical capitals as well as artists, including Louis Armstrong, Gloria Estefan, Elvis and hip-hop.
Tracing the roots of America’s music through iconic cityscapes including New Orleans, Chicago, New York City, Nashville, Memphis, Miami and more, the film weaves an immersive experience of American culture and creativity with a superlative soundtrack.

As the destination marketing organization for the U.S., formed as the Corporation for Travel Promotion in 2010, the public-private entity launched in May 2011 under the Obama administration and like all government organizations, has had to prove its value to this White House and its partners, gaining support for showcases such as this new film and its new streaming video offering.
For more insights, Interbrand North America Chief Growth Officer Hermann Behrens and brandchannel editor-in-chief Shirley Brady spoke with Brand USA CMO Tom Garzilli (right).
Tom, what’s been the response to the new film so far in your advance screenings?
It’s been very well received where we’ve screened it preliminarily. It’s very exciting and it’s got some great music. You’ve got Aloe Blacc, the Grammy-nominated singer songwriter, as our storyteller, and it’s really his journey around the country kind of exploring some of his heroes and genres of music.
We always try to make the sound, the visual quality because of the giant screen film is as good as you can make it. The thing about the National Parks film was it was the first in a series to tell our story around the world in a way that was very immersive and very interesting but really trying to tell the story of the United States around the world.
How does this extend on your first film?
National Parks Adventure talked about the diversity of the landscape and the experiences of the great outdoor adventure in America. It’s breathtaking with amazing scenery, perfect for the giant screen. America’s Musical Journey is complementary to that, going from the outdoors to the cities and telling the story of the diversity of the country’s culture and experience through music, which is really the result of us being a country of immigrants. That really informed and created American music, starting with the blues and jazz and rock’n’roll.
What does Brand USA stand for and how do you want it to be perceived, at home and abroad?
We continue our mission to bring in international business and travel to the U.S., and really move international travelers across the country through and beyond the gateways. That’s all about getting people to understand you know you don’t see America just by seeing one place. We have offices in countries around the world, working with the travel trade and training them in addition to helping to create product that they can sell.
At the same time, we’re America’s inspirers in the world. That’s the place that we add the most value for our partners and for our stakeholders—being the storytellers of this country and helping our cities, states, attractions and partners be better storytellers.
How are you evolving your storytelling with GoUSA TV?
We’re now available from mobile to the desktop to digital out of home, television and giant (IMAX) screen. Each screen, each experience, really looks at the best ways to reach consumers or provide the consumer with value. Our content is great and the experience is very immersive, while we’re also doing a lot of things that make much more sense for the smallest screen: shorter types of programs, influencer content and tactical programs with bookable product.
As you move your way across this group of screens, our content and our storytelling gets bigger and fits that screen best. So what we see about the giant screen films is that they are exciting and attention-grabbing. America’s Musical Journey will be enhanced on our streaming television channel, so GoUSA TV will be building out content such as music-inspired road trips.
National Parks Adventure is halfway through its primary run and it’s still in theaters around the world. This past June we’ve already had a million and a half people in China download the film on their devices, and now it’s available on Netflix. The audience that film has received so far is just a fraction of the audience that it will ultimately see.
How do you think of Brand USA as a brand?
I don’t think of us as a company might think of a brand. We’re a brand let’s say to our stakeholders who know who we are and what they expect from us and from that perspective as an industry travel and tourism industry brand I think we’re a thought leader among our peers. It’s hard to find a comparable destination brand. We represent 50 states, five territories, the District of Columbia, hundreds of cities and thousands of attractions. There aren’t too many other countries that have the breadth of product and stakeholders that we have.
Our biggest value is as the storytellers for our relevant partners. The USA as a travel brand, from a value perspective, again I can’t think of a country on the planet that offers the breadth of experience that we have here. There are some great countries, even the leading destination countries, that are fantastic but you cannot do everything in those markets that you can do here.
You would have to go to different countries to experience everything we have. Even the countries that geographically have a lot of the things we have, they don’t have the culture, they don’t have the music, the diversity of our people. So when you look at all of that put together and you know it’s an amazing, daunting opportunity to be able to get up every day and try to tell the story of America to the world.
What’s the outlook in growing and developing inbound tourism for the U.S. in challenging times for travel and tourism worldwide?
Brand USA and our partners are all pretty bullish on the long-term prospects of what we’re doing together and what the growth of international inbound travel can and should be. So there are markets, there are countries that are up right now. There are countries that are a little bit down. There are lots of reasons for that. Primary reasons are our currency, the strength of the dollar.
It’s like stepping back from a stock market chart where you know you can look at it really closely, hour by hour or day by day and there are some ups and downs. But if you step back and you look at the trend, the trend goes in a certain direction and in our case I think our growth will continue to be very solid. You know as time goes by it will get just get better and better.
Our job is to just keep pushing on that momentum and keep motivating and inspiring generations. While some of what we do is tactical, where we’re partnering let’s say with Expedia and we’re doing very specific product offerings to consumers and making bookings. That’s not our primary role. Our primary role is really inspirational and to continue to help advance interest in visiting the USA.
There aren’t too many parts of the world where people are not aware of the USA or don’t have a sense of what it is. Our job is just to continue to help enhance what they know and make it more interesting and more inspiring. From a value proposition, the better job that we do of making people aware of and able to see that ‘Wow, when I go to New York, within two or three hours I can be having two or three other experiences.’ And you can go do that and you still haven’t seen America. You’ve got to come back and go to another part. It’s just constantly reminding them that there’s just so much more to see.
When it comes to brand storytelling we’re really lucky. When you’re a brand such as Coca-Cola, you’ve got to get your brand into your storytelling. In our case, the story itself—the experience—is the brand. We don’t really have to push that hard on the branding piece. The harder we work to just make the storytelling great, the more effective it is.
