Thoughts on Bridgerton season 3

No one asked, but putting it out there. (Written after viewing part 1.)

The Good

Polin - it’s their season after all. There is plenty of them and a lot of scenes pulled right from the book. I don’t think Colin/Newts is all that charismatic or great at acting tbh, but Pen/Nic is carrying the season. Seeing through her eyes, there is a compelling story of self-acceptance, struggle and romance. I was whooping whenever she got steamy with her man.

Debling - wonderfully acted and such an interesting addition to the ton, I love this character. He is so kind and honest, he deserves the world.

Francesca & John - Hannah Dodd is doing a wonderful job. We get to see the one and only shy Bridgerton, which is novel. Her odd chemistry with John is magical and I am already fucked up about them. I’m more invested in them than Polin 😅

Eloise - we are seeing more facets of Eloise which is wonderful. That she is willing to look deeper at peoples’ true character - including Cressida and Pen, though the reconciliation with Pen isn’t finalized yet. Cressida also makes Eloise check herself, her assumptions and privileges which is crucial for her development. She’s growing this season.

The Cowpers - redemption arc for Cressida incoming! We are learning that her bitchiness stems from a competitive nature, which she feels she must have to secure a good match thanks to pressures from her awful parents. This is interesting in its own right but please please please have Sophie also being mistreated in their household. That would be the bow on top.

Marcus Anderson - hello handsome! He is wonderfully acted and immediately has a warm spark with Violet. The mystery is built as to why Lady D is so aggravated by him. What has he done in the past that makes her wary of him?

The music - great instrumental covers of on-point pop songs and revisiting a few tried and true Bridgerton original themes.

The Bad

Kanthony - But only for part 1. I'm guessing they had to work around JB's busy shooting schedule, but it sucks they found a lame way to essentially write them out of episodes 2-4. I'm happy to see from the trailer there will be more of them in part 2.

Benedict - for fucks sake, he does nothing. Season 2 might as well not have happened. Not only is he not sad nor frustrated with Anthony about art school, he has no introspection or personal development in part 1. He’s just shoved in the background again, making sassy little comments and fucking a random lady. Where is this ‘crucial role’ the showrunner mentioned? What ‘comes to a head’ for him as Luke keeps alluding to? All of his material must happen in part 2 because there is nothing in part 1.

The fucking Featheringtons - I know the entail is a plot line set up by season 2, but getting into microscopic detail about the sex lives of the elder two Featherington sisters is not the comic relief the show thinks it is. It actually makes me nauseous. The whole ‘race to produce an heir’ could have been a single line explanation from Portia and screen time with the Featherington couples could have been spent on more Benedict.

The sex - part 2 better be mind blowing because Nicola’s claim that Polin has ‘won the steamy battle’ is unfounded based on the first four episodes. Okay we’ve got Anthony and Benedict each with a scene between the sheets kissing ladies but not a single Bridgerbum to be seen. The claims of ‘threesomes’ and ‘lesbian sex’ are extremely generous. It’s 5 seconds of Colin kissing sex workers and them peformatively kissing each other. I know we have the mirror scene coming in part 2 which threatens to blow the roof off anything Saphne and Kanthony did but thus far, I am unimpressed. It feels more buttoned up than ever.

Tales of Fate and Fortune

Words: ~4000 Rating: Mature Relationship: Female OC/Nate Sewell Warnings: Mildly spicy (very mild tbh)

It becomes a ritual: a smiled greeting to the storeowner, who already starts preparing his tea while Nate wanders between the shelves, sometimes picking up and browsing a volume or two on his way, but always ending up at his book. Or not really his book, is it? Their book, belonging to both him and this mysterious notewriter.

He finds the book much like he had found the bookstore: tucked away in a secluded spot, nearly going unnoticed, yet drawing him in as soon as he lays eyes on it. It’s a small volume, unassuming and well-worn. Nothing special.

(“Why did you pick it up?” she will ask someday. To which he will reply, “Fate.” She will scoff at that and roll her eyes, a smile dimpling her cheek.)

All of that will happen later, though, much later, and he is not one to skip ahead. Oh, no, he prefers to take his time, to let the story unfold itself word after word and let the tension build. So in the present, Nate takes the book from where it is squeezed in between two larger ones and brings it with him to the reading nook at the back of the store.

Copper-coloured reading lamps soak the mish-mash of armchairs in their warm light. A few small tables stand between them, each with books stacked on top.

Nate settles on a chair closest to the tall windows. They do little to let in light, the sun being hidden behind the clouds, but together with the draped curtains, it’s almost like sitting in a cosy living room. A home, of sorts, however temporary it may be. While his unit has become his family, the Agency facilities have never come close to a home. A place like this is exactly what he needs after having travelled from one side of the world to the other and back again for their last mission.

He leans back and starts to read.

Before long, he finds the first note: a faded ballpoint-blue scribble in the margin near the end of the prologue.

That’s really all she got? Some “wisdom” that sounds like it came from the label on a teabag? At least that would have given her a drink to enjoy.

Nate chuckles. True enough, the message from the fortune teller to the protagonist had been far from original, but those age-old wisdoms often hold some truth. And if it are the same ones that get told over and over, well, isn’t that like just like stories? The same tropes and archetypes woven together into countless different tales. Heroes fighting bravely for their cause and strangers turning to lovers.

Later he will tell himself it was the homely feeling of this place, combined with a bone-deep tiredness, that makes him forget himself and take a pen out of his deep brown leather briefcase—a gift from Adam, who had merely stated it was practical, but Nate knew the effort it must have take his friend to get this exact one, so similar to the one he lost years before.

He sets the tip of the pen to the paper and writes, neatly below the note,

Don’t you think words given in-person hold more weight than those that are mass-printed and impersonal? Certainly more than those on tea of debatable quality.

He jolts at the ding of the old-fashioned shop bell.

“There you are!” Farah’s voice carries all the way to the end of the shop, making Nate wince. “Found him,” she shouts back towards the street.

Through the window, he can just make out the figures of Adam and Morgan.

He quickly closes the book and slips the pen in his bag as if to hide the evidence of his crime. The shopkeeper is nowhere to be seen, although their footsteps sound from behind the thick curtain that must lead to some sort of backroom. He should buy the book, but—

“Are you coming? We’ve been searching for you for ages.” Farah moves her weight from one foot to another, cold wind blowing past her through the still open door.

“One moment.”

Despite the gloominess of the corner and the amount of books, his eye is drawn to the empty spot where the book belongs. Without further debate, he slides it back into place.

“Told you he was going to be in the dustiest place in this city,” Farah is chattering to Morgan and Adam by the time he makes it outside. “We’re in the most exciting place we’ve been in ages and Nate goes to hide between old books.”

Hiding his smile, Nate says, “You do know that many of those ‘old books’ are younger than yourself?”

Farah scoffs. “It’s not about the numbers, Natey, it’s about the vibes.” Looking back at the store, she wrinkles her nose. “And the smell.”

Do you think DC has any plans to make Kon queer (since they’ve been baiting TimKon since Tim has come out and Kon’s creator said he thinks he’s bi) or do you think canon queer Kon and TimKon are dead?

I don’t 100% think any of those things, tbh

I think right now the current solidified upcoming plans for Kon are far more Superfam-related (like, the upcoming new designs for the whole fam and stuff in Action Comics, and his solo book from Round Robin being him off on his own adventure in part at least bc of complicated feelings about how he fits into the Superfam nowadays based on the initial preview we got a while back) rather than… related to Tim or anything like that. Sexuality could maybe be a topic of discussion in the solo but my… vibe read, I guess (which isn’t based off much solid factual stuff but rather observation and intuition etc) is that there’s more character work to be done with just re-establishing him in the present day DCU and nailing down his status quo before shaking it up with something like exploring ‘hey what if he’s queer’.

any ‘baiting’ of TimKon in recent times (since Tim’s come out) has happened under Fitzmartin’s pen—and maybe that’s an angle she would like to explore with Kon and possibly has ideas/plans for down the road—but as of right now she’s not writing him in anything soon (since, again, the things he’s slated to appear in are Action Comics and his Round Robin book). I think it’s always like, relevant to remember that with something like DC where characters pass between different writers with different ideas and stuff, what may seem like something being hinted at with one writer could totally just… not be picked up on and continued by the next- especially when there’s different editorial teams the character is going between too. Things aren’t always as deliberate as we may want them to be.

But anyways, I don’t think it’s impossible for any of it to happen, i don’t think queer Kon or the possibility of TimKon are ‘dead’ or anything like that. but I also don’t really think of anything like that as being… solidly planned at this moment.

1. What font do you write in? Do you actually care or is that just the default setting? Standart arial, and don't care, tought i tried the comic sans trick a few times

2. If you had to give up your keyboard and write your stories exclusively by hand, could you do it? If you already write everything by hand, a) are you a wizard and b) pen or pencil? Probably not, my handwriting is terrible, actually unreadable to anyone but myself. Ive used to write on papper back in highschool when i had to write basicly everyday, now i havent touched a pen in ages.

3. What is your writing ritual and why is it cursed? No standart ritual aside from needing music, anything else distracts me. The two songs i listened the most while writing is Respite on the Spitafields by ghost and Sacred Worlds by Blind Guardian

Only when it fits the narrative. I dont like killing characters whitout a major reason, usually thematic, otherwise it feels cheap.

Literally just characters vibing, introspection, Over the top stuff.

14. Do you lend your books to people? Are people scared to borrow books from you? Do you know exactly where all your “lost” books are and which specific friend from school you haven’t seen in twelve years still possesses them? Will you ever get them back? No one ever asked for a book to me but id have no problem doing so. Im the one people shouldnt ever lend any books because i am very careless and would likely end up dropping coffee or something accidentally on it

15. Do you write in the margins of your books? Dog-ear your pages? Read in the bath? Why or why not? Do you judge people who do these things? Can we still be friends? I dont write in margins, but i did dog eared books in the past, and i use the jacket(?) of the book to mark my pages.

17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text. I have a post with a bunch of lore about the dragon species, i cant find it tought. But they are mammals that lay eggs, have no gender, their society mostly resemble that of bees, they have no currency, and the watsonian reason the main character goes by gendered terms despite not having one is because she thinks the words sound nice

18. Choose a passage from your writing. Tell me about the backstory of this moment. How you came up with it, how it changed from start to end. Spicy addition: Questioner provides the passage. I dont think theres any passages that have interesting enough backstories.

19. Tell me a story about your writing journey. When did you start? Why did you start? Were there bumps along the way? Where are you now and where are you going? My dream since childhood was to write a book, ive always liked to tell stories, read and such, i would dictate stories that my mom would write down before i learnt how to do so. But then i got really into drawing and started to foucus more on that, and ended up shifting the foucus from writing text to comic making since every artist with ocs does that. I also changed foucus on projects faster than light, so i would write 2 chapters and give up the next day, or change the entire story the next week and such.

I stuck with comics as my goal for like the past 6 years, and only early this year i came to the conclusion that i really hate the comic making part of making comics, and that i like writting much better. Im very rusty+ the fact im not as avid reader as i used to, and the quality is not really good, but im having fun.

If a witch offered you the choice between eternal happiness with your one true love and the ability to finally finish, perfect, and publish your dearest, darlingest, most precious WIP in exactly the way you've always imagined it — which would you choose? In the inn i stay during the week and my actual room in my house are essentially the same place, Is my room, its messy and damp but its confy enough. My table is turned to the small window and during the morning the sun hist right in my face. The table is equally messy, with cups and glasses over it, pappers stained with coffee and tea cover its surface. My one company, a small succulent that rests near the window, and a carved small owl that i need to constantly clean because its constantly molding due to the dampness.

24. How much prep work do you put into your stories? What does that look like for you? Do you enjoy this part or do you just want to get on with it? Idk what kind of prep work you would do. I just sit and write mate.

25. What is a weird, hyper-specific detail you know about one of your characters that is completely irrelevant to the story? Godamn i cant think of any rn. Most of my Extremely well developed characters are from my BIg Story, but it literally doesnt exist anywhere outside my head yet, so idk what is and isnt relevant to it. For my current wip is a little harder since the characters are like less than a year old. idk...Orick looks like a cat person, i think he would like to own a cat.

26. How do you get into your character’s head? How do you get out? Do you ever regret going in there in the first place? I go "what would a person in this situation with this background do" and try my best to guess.

27. Who is the most stressful character you’ve ever written? Why? Any character thats like a stategist or planner, because its hard to make them look smart without making it look like bullshit or predicting the future

28. Who is the most delightful character you’ve ever written? Why? Meira. Her narration came very easy to me, guilt ridden but still professional and calm, also Big Gay.

29. Where do you draw your inspiration? What do you do when the inspiration well runs dry? I was never a very original kid, im a vampire that sucks the soul out of other things to fuel my own. Sort of. I've dreamed with plots before, and i usually do my best to remember, but while at the moment i wake up feeling like that was the best idea in the world, after a while when i think about it again, its just sort of nonsense

'sometimes a dream is enough' - the last line from one of my favourite books. In context it drives me insane, it makes me rabid. But out of context its just neat

“Doctor Zeigler is just trying to keep everyone healthy, Huntress. No one here considers you incapable, so please don't feel offended when help is offered. We are a team, after all.”

Team is straining it a little; still, Huntress has to admit there are a few moments still clear in her mind when teamwork had flown smoothly, though. She just doesn’t want to admit to needing any help. Isn’t she the one with the fancy cloak and the fancy rifle, the one who’s been helping out? Her problems should be her own, along with everything else she’s brought with her.

She still hasn’t moved when Genji sighs a little, and surprisingly reaches up his hands near the back of his head. The soft hiss of compressed air being released startles her - she hadn’t even realized the faceplate could be removed, and she finds herself holding her breath for a moment as he takes it off, eyes widening a fraction when she sees the scarred skin come into view, his angular eyes somehow far sharper than the bright green of his visor. Uncomfortably, she’s reminded of how Hanzo had watched her. Brothers, indeed. The metal that frames his face makes the sight disconcerting as she continues to stare until finally averting her gaze, mumbling a tiny apology.

“It is not shameful to accept help when it is offered to you, though I can see you do not feel the same about this. I have needed much help in my life, and while I might have once felt resentful of it like you do, I have learned much since then, and I hope you can come to the same realization that I did. So please, eat. It will make you feel better.”

this is from my overwatch fic about my girl huntress and I always did have a scene in mind where she sees genji's face for the first time. tying it in with her trouble accepting help and eating properly made it feel impactful to me, with genji extending some vulnerability to show her that it's okay to be vulnerable and need help. it's a good scene ur honor

google docs, i just name things pretty straightforwardly so I know what it is (like "Hanzo fic" or "X worldbuilding")

if it's a canon character I'll go through anything that features them, read their dialogues, lore, etc to help me get as much into their mindset as possible, I like being able to imagine any dialogue ive written in their voice so it checks out. there are some characters that are really Intense to get into honestly, I have to make sure it doesn't affect my own mental health to dive into that mindset, esp with characters that are depressed since I have that issue myself and it can push me in bad directions if I get too attached.

28. Who is the most delightful character you’ve ever written? Why?

I find Genji Shimada it be very delightful to write for, he has a very wholesome mindset about himself that gives me a good boost of mental wellness like "he can be so kind to himself.... maybe I can be kind to myself too" and it makes me feel good!! also he's so fucking funny tbh

30. Talk to me about the role dreams play in your writing life. Have you ever used material from your dreams in your writing? Have you ever written in a dream? Did you remember it when you woke up?

I don't recall ever writing in my dreams, but i have definitely taken inspiration from my dreams before! ive gotten characters, plots, some worldbuilding, it's not a constant deluge but sometimes my subconscious just cooks up some real fun, unique ideas

I don't have one really tbh... adhd brain forget shit lmao

If Penelope wasn’t white then she wouldn’t have been promoted this heavily, I can say that with guarantee. Sure plus size representation matters but not at the expense of POC representation especially a dark skinned female lead. This has put me off with Penelope and season 4 in general. If they wanted to they would have put JB and Simone on the covers from the start but instead they doubled down on Pen and Polin the white couple. They want to harp about the diversity of the show but do the bare minimum to promote the diverse actors/characters. I also have no hope that the Feb 14th event will have either JB or Simone as special guests.

Honestly, yeah. It’s a bit disturbing to me that people are trying to play it like fat rep is as important as racial representation, and for that matter representation of people with darker skin tones (especially women). Speaking as a woman who isn’t much smaller than Nicola…. They’re not the same. It is important, but at the end of the day whiteness gives you a huge fucking advantage in much of the world. Even in many countries where white people are not the majority, colorism is still very much a thing. I’m not South Asian and I can’t speak for South Asian people, but I think it’s pretty widely acknowledged that in much of South Asian cinema (I’m thinking primarily of Bollywood but it goes beyond that) women who look like Simone are not well-represented. Then you go into western cinema, where South Asian women in general get nothing…. And when they do, they normally look like Priyanka Chopra, let’s be real. This doesn’t mean that lightskinned people of color don’t struggle with representation and general racism, but look at season 1 of Bridgerton as an example. Almost every person of color had a pretty light skin tone. This has been a pretty common critique of Shondaland shows in general—the lack of couples that pair a poc with a poc for one thing, versus a poc with a white person (which is something Bridgerton inherently continues because allll the Bridgertons are white) and the colorism issue.

I’ll be transparent and say that there was already no way in hell I was watching Penelope’s arc lol. I think she’s actually…. Atrocious? Fat rep? Like Penelope is fat, and even though she’s quite clearly a pretty girl she’s jealous of Eloise (“not all of us can be a pretty Bridgerton”) and Marina and resentful of basically everyone. Please for the love of God give me a fat woman who has insecurities that have nothing to do with her looks. Give me a fat chick who’s like well I’m objectively hot so yeah I can find a husband but I actually don’t feel like I’m worthy of love because I was raised to be a commodity. I’m so tired of the jealous, insecure fat girl and that’s literally all Penelope was in season 1. Oh thank you Colin I was getting bullied and you saaaaved me, poor me, a fat girl you have deigned to dance with!!!! Gimme a break. Never mind the fact that there’s a pretty marked difference between the love interests cast for other girls and the one cast for Nicola—we’ll see where their progressive sex scenes sit in season 4, I suppose.

But like……….. barring something truly insane, she’s getting that season. That’s fine, that’s set, there’s really no reason to promote Penelope as heavily as they have been until then. She will literally be the leading lady. Because honestly? It’s not just EW, but even her tagging along to ****~~TUDUM~~**** before then, and now Julia caping for her on Instagram lol. It’s a pretty clear strategy. Was show!Penelope THAT insanely popular? Because uh, they’re pushing that narrative and from what I recall there was one person EVERYONE was talking about last season, and it wasn’t her. And sure, other people were discussed…. But not to the degree that he was lmao.

It actually would’ve made a ton of sense to have Phoebe promoted with JB, Charithra, and Simone versus Nicola. She’s in this season, she was the leading lady of last season. Have her pass the baton to Simone. Make it like a Reigning Miss Bridgerton gives the crown to the new one kinda thing lol. I know they’ve decided to build suspense now by teasing a love triangle, but the jig is up lol. Everyone who watched the ****~~TUDUM~~**** thing was told this was this love story of the season. It was basically stated when the casting was announced. The only people who won’t know that going in are the people who aren’t watching much promo… at all lol.

I’m sure there is some desire to avoid another RJP level fallout by promoting Pen as this uniting factor between the seasons. Because real talk, this will probably be a four season show, ending with her being unmasked. Buuuut even if that was the sole intention (and I can’t believe that’s true knowing what I know about this show) the fact that nobody was like, idk, relegating Simone Ashley to a zoom call about a dog while the white woman everyone knows gets the cover and promotion as the ~center of the show…… seems bad lol. Honestly, if you had to have a white woman on the cover with Simone and Charithra, Phoebe or Claudia, the Bridgerton girls… would make sense…. For Bridgerton lmaoooo.

Writer’s Block (Chongyun + Xingqiu)

A/N: AYYY- @anzynai , I had you for Squealing Santa! I really hope you enjoy this, and do have a Merry Christmas! Also a big thanks to Mia who organized this as well! Major thank you! So, tbh, I did have a lot of fun writing this! I always liked them but after writing for them, I really do enjoy them! However, this was almost late because I got really busy as of recently and was lacking on being productive on writing and such. But I got it done and I’m posting it when I wanted to! I originally wanted this done on the 15th of November and to post it on December 1st. While I did make my personal deadline on posting it, I can’t say I did with actually when I got done with the fic xD

Well, this began as a normal day, one like any other. The exorcist came around to the second son of the Feiyun Commerce Guild, and the two went off somewhere to hang out. It was something like clockwork. This particular day, they chose to venture off into a more rural area, near a slightly woody area in Liyue Harbor. It wasn’t particularly popular, and it was quiet. Very nice little area if you’re aware of it.

Chongyun was currently relaxing himself as he focused on the views around him while the bookworm of the two was writing again, which Chongyun didn’t question too much considering he was aware of Xingqiu’s interest and occasional hobby of writing despite book publishers in Liyue Harbor not caring much for Xingqiu’s writing.

However, since Xingqiu has found out of Inazuma’s spark of intrigue in his stories, he may be picking up his writer’s pen once more and beginning another storyline, perhaps a continuation.

But that’s the current issue he was having with this. He…needless to say, was struggling with where exactly to go with it while keeping everything consistent. The book lover has made concepts of ideas along with possibilities but he lacked a sense of what direction to pursue.

“Xingqiu, are you troubled currently? You seem a tad…what’s the word, confused? Frustrated? Something of the sort.” The icy blue styled man finally spoke up about it, causing the darker haired man of the two to let out a small laugh.

“Eheh. Well, I admit…I am struggling a little more than I wish to admit. It’s just…I’m having trouble with picking up the story and where exactly to go with it. I would like to go in a unexpecting direction or keep the reader on their toes but it… it isn’t quite clicking for ideas thus far.”

Xingqiu sighs with a slight smile. “My point is that I’m having a writer’s block like most amazing writer’s get. Nothing super exciting or scary.”

Chongyun gave a subtle nod to his friend, beginning to think to himself about how to help Xingqiu. Though, he wasn’t much of a writer, never found interest in it, yet alone had the time for it. But the exorcist didn’t want— no no. He couldn’t just sit there after Xingqiu always helped him with trying to find demons of sorts.

“Hm… well, where’d you leave off…?” Chongyun decided to speak out once more, attempting to listen to this and hope ideas from his outside view would assist him. “Ah, well, it all starts with our main character…”

Xingqiu began to ramble off with the details, the popsicle loving nearby listening in, a little conflicted on what to do as he listened. Of the details he heard, it sounded as if the bookworm was extremely passionate but in all honesty, Chongyun began to space out, mainly realizing he would have to listen to a whole story and that’s if he could even give an idea.

Hmm…what would Xingqiu do in this situation… Whenever he was upset, the second son of a certain guild would not only assist in a solution, but even when he couldn’t, he’d at least cheer him up or support him in such ways. So, maybe…returning the favor would be the best line of action. Luckily, thanks to his occasional negative reactions at being quite unsuccessful at finding and cleansing a demon of its ability, he has a very present and clear idea.

“Xingqiu…?” “Hmm? Too many details?” “Nono...well…” Gonna quickly move past that. “I may have an idea.” “Oh? So, not enough detail for you?” Xingqiu asked in a playful and slightly teasing manner.

“Eheheh. Believe me, there was quite enough.” Chongyun stated, deciding to let him down easy, though he was confident he took the hint. “However, this idea, it’s a little bit different than you’d think, but I believe it might help you.” “Then do share.” The one in darker clothing decides to allow this, giving it a chance, having trust in the cryo vision wielder’s judgement.

Chongyun, admittedly, was nervous about doing this. There wasn’t anything to be nervous about…except for if the tables are immediately flipped. “Alright. Will do.” He tried to seem a little more confident about this, sneaking his hand over to the bookworm. “Well, go on! I’m curious to see what ideas you may ha- hahahave! Chohohong!”

The exorcist was quick to taze his sides, trying to be quick now because he knows exactly what’s gonna happen. A major attempt to turn the tables. And he was correct.

Xingqiu attempted to grab his hand, managing to succeed, causing the cryo user to panic as his hand went straight up from his sides. “Gotchu!” Xingqiu announced, shooting his other hand to Chongyun’s side, right by where his ribs were and tazed him.

“Payback!” “W-Wahahait! Nohoho! Stohohop thahat!” Chongyun couldn’t help but break into giggles immediately, this is already going wrong. However, this is all he has to do, win this little uprising and then he’s fine. With his mental encouragement, Chongyun was officially now determined to win against him.

So, to fight against the Hydro user, he straight up tackled him onto the grass, making Xingqiu fall over as he straddled him. “Waitwaitwait! Chongyun!” “No no. No protesting! You must allow me to return the favor.” “No! Don’t you even— ehehahaha! Chohongyuhun!”

The second son attempted to protest, failing at this since Chongyun made up his mind by now. Truthfully, he was glad he chose this, he forgot how much he loved Xingqiu’s laugh. After all, he didn’t get to hear it often considering how easily the hydro user usually turns the tables.

“Sorry, but this is too much to pass up. I must cheer you up!” Chongyun stated, beginning to scribble his fingers over his friend’s ribs. “Pff- Buhuhut I’m fihihine! I’m nohohot upsehehet!” “Oh…well then it’s revenge I suppose. Sorry but…I’m not sorry.” Chongyun, the kind and nervous exorcist, being a savage? How unheard of!

Which, Xingqiu began to laugh a bit more genuinely at that thanks to how unusual it was. “Thahahat’s so cruehehel ohohof you! Hohohow dahahare you crohohoss the sehehecond sohohon of- W-WhahahahaHAIT!” Chongyun got a little tired of his rambling and frankly just wanted to hear his pure sweet laugh.

“Ah, your tummy has always been so sensitive, hehe. How sweet.” Chongyun teases his closest friend, his finger now tracing around his navel. After all, couldn’t help but test that spot.

“C-CHOHOHONGYUN! PLEHEHEASE! I’M SOHOHORRY-“ “Oh? For what?” “AHAH— TI-TIHIHICKLING YOU ALL THEHEHE TIME! PLEHEHEASE LET ME GOHOHOHO!”

“Well. I suppose that is a very good apology… hmmm, let me think…”

Chongyun pretended to think about this for a moment. Well, truthfully, it wasn't pretending. After a few moments, he began to consider if he should truly be so merciful with his friend. After all, his poor friend was laughing his heart out for the moment thanks to the extreme sensations surging through him.

Though, there’s one thing holding back Chongyun from hailing this attack was simply Xingqiu’s pure laugh. It was so sweet. Just somewhat loud, yet still pure and almost a bubbly type of laughter. It was giving serotonin to him, not just the sound of it but the fact he’s making Xingqiu happy. It made the male with high yang energy feel quite similar.

This being said, Chongyun, despite everything, halted his big attack. However, he finally successfully cheered him up and tickled him! That’s the important part. Mostly the first part of that.

“Ehehe… ah…Cruel move, but fair considering how often I do that.”

The hydro user admitted as the other pulled out a popsicle, taking it in order to be sure he’ll be alright. “Mhm, I agree.” “Hey! You’re now acting more like me, you’ve been practicing the art of trickery?”

Xingqiu nudged him with a soft smile, Chongyun offered a popsicle, flinching gently from the soft nudge to his side. “Ah, this a new way to distract me from getting you back?” Xingqiu questions curiously, his smile still being present as he took the popsicle.

“Ehehe…maybe?” Chongyun decided to be honest despite his slight nervousness confessing his plan. “Ah, well, I’ll spare you for the time being. Mainly because of the popsicle.” The hydro vision wielder winked as he spoke out to Chongyun, beginning to lick at the popsicle, not minding the slightly off taste. Actually, he found it’s taste, despite it being off, sweet.

“Ah…but you’re getting me back one day?” The icy blue eyed male asked nervously, raising an eyebrow as he attempted to enjoy his popsicle. Xingqiu glanced at him with a mischievous smirk growing on his face, the cold treat in his mouth.

“Maybe today, maybe tomorrow. You’ll find out.” “Ah…” Sooner or later, they both managed to finish the popsicles, sharing a nice moment of silence, Xingqiu seemingly taking new notes relating to his story he was working on and Chongyun taking in the views.

“Oh, and Chongyun?” “Yes?” “. . . Start running.” “O-oh. oH-“ The exorcist was quick to hop up, beginning to break into a sprint. The writer sighs with a small smile, placing his book for notes down, wiping himself off as he stood up.

“Well, this will certainly end in a lovely way, one way or another.” Xingqiu mumbled before keeping a smile, going to chase after Chongyun. These two are gonna be here for a long while for sure. But hey, they’ll both definitely be enjoying it.

Favorite Benny books?

Ok so. Tumblr crashed as I was typing this on mobile. I am retyping it on desktop cause fuck this site, and I Have Opinions, and my friend I will let you hear them or so help me!

.... This got. Really. Really long. I am adding a read more to spare you guys from that.

Ok so! As a preface, I haven't read many VNAs with Benny in it, and of her solo books, I still have 2 of her Legion books to read.

I'm going to (re)start this with the VNAs!

Love and War: a very classic answer perhaps, but it is a really good introduction for Benny, even if the book has its flaws and can certainly show its age nowadays. Cornell absolutely nails her right off the bat, and from her very first page, Benny is just a character that keeps you interested. Not only does she work great as a counter to both Seven and Ace, but she also brings a breath of life to the whole range the way only a prose character can.

Plus, I think one of the greatest successes of that book lies in how Benny appears as a rounded and flawed person from the beginning. She’s not your ordinary girl dragged to a whirlwind of adventure and an universe of wonders, but an older, adult woman, with a good chunk of life experience and adventures already behind her, and while setting foot inside the TARDIS opens up a new and unexpected chapter in her life, it does also remain just that. A chapter. Benny had a life before the Doctor, and from that moment, while noone could have predicted it then, she would have one after him as well.

The Left-Handed Hummingbird: I just finished that one last week, so it’s obviously both fresh in my mind, and one I'm thinking highly of at the moment. Well I mean, it’s Orman! Or course I love it. She really is great at writing both intricate, large stories, and yet focusing on the personal, on the human side of things. And I find that this book does a great job at putting benny in the role of the grounding presence both for ace and the doctor, as well as exploring how time traveling as they do, and dealing with seven’s schemes can be frustrating for benny. That whole tardis team is a mess, and none of these people really… work well together, but it’s because they’re so dysfunctioning that they’re fascinating, and orman absolutely nails that.

Theater of War: A very different type of book, it is honestly a fun romp, and it has Benny being an actual archeologist, down to dealing with the academia side of things. And it’s the little things, but I love it when Benny books remember that about her tbh? Also, it has some nice theater theming, and well, as an introduction for brax, it certainly works well! It’s one of those VNAs that I think is just fun. A well crafted story with good takes on the characters, that’s always enjoyable to me!

Return of the Living Dad: Orman again?? What a surprise! But frankly, I love how this book is all about Benny and her daddy issues, be it with the Doctor or well, her actual dad. Between that, her budding marriage with Jason, and finding out so many old wounds reopened, I just. Really love how raw Benny can be under Orman’s pen? How underneath it all, she still has that side of the scared orphan that lost both parents to a war she was far, far too young to ever comprehend, and how that just left her rebelling against the world in general, and resenting deep down her parents for that abandon. I mean, it’s neat character stuff, but it can very easily be written as dull & cliche shitte you know? And Orman really… always get down to the heart of it all, and boi does it make for some great reading.

The Dying Days: It’s a very fun book, and well, technically works as the first round for Benny as the lead woman after all! It’s a joy all throughout, triumphant where it needs to be, and managing to both celebrate the Doctor and what he brought to the VNAs, as well as setting up the stage for Benny to go on to her own range. It’s basically one last run of the old team, and well. I do love Benny & Eight, and yes I am blaming Parkin for it. Also, big brained take to have Eight give her Wolsey because I love that cat and Benny deserves a cute kitty in her life. We all do.

Ok!! Now on to the NA, and my personal favorite era!

Dragon’s Wrath: It’s a fun one!! I do really like the story being centered again on archeology first and foremost, and it’s a good romp that has some really good take on Benny. Especially the trial scenes, I love how those one get down to Benny as someone who despite everything, loves history, and cares very very deeply about the artifacts she uncovers. Also, it introduces brax as a mainstay of the dellah era, and does so in a rather nice way. Overall, a very enjoyable book!

Beyond the Sun: Benny & students stranded on a planet with mystery to uncover, that’s already a fun premise, and then throw in all the various queer themes present, especially with Emile, and the whole scene of them all in drag performing on top of a bus, and it’s just a rather good book. Plus, I love how it mirrors the whole VNA Doctor mantra, except with a very Benny twist. Sometimes cruel, sometimes cowardly, but trying her damndest to do good. And well, that’s just Benny isn’t it? I always harp on about the very heart of Benny being her humanity, and if there’s something that book highlights, it’s that.

Deadfall: Jason takes center stage in this one, and well, I do really love Jason. It’s overall a fun book with some nice lore ideas, and I love how it works Cwej in the whole Dellah setting. Also, at least it’s a story with Jason in the lead that doesn’t end in utter tragedy, and that’s always nice!

Tempest: Ok so. That book isn’t great. The story’s cliche, the characters aren’t the best, and the plot itself? Forgettable, it’s another in the list of “sort of base under siege story in the dellah era” which you’d think wouldn’t be super common and yet! So… why am I listing it here? Cause the concept of the planet!! The idea of a world of storms and disaster, run through via a blind train as the only means of transport? The fantastic animal life described in it??? That book left an impression of me, and that’s not something I can say of all of the others.

The Medusa Effect: … Justin Richard writes a good Benny. Like, legit. I love how that one really works with the setting & history of Dellah, and gives further information on the planet’s involvement with the Dalek war. Plus, it also got some really, really nice aesthetics. I am soft for good aesthetics ok? Benny, dancing with a skeleton on the deck of an old spaceship made to look like a cruise liner in an hallucination/dream sequence type of thing? Sign me right up!

Beige Planet Mars: That one is a blast. I remember just, absolutely loving it when I read it tbh. Between the overall description of Mars, the further Lore Implication of the Mars invasion & all that, as well as it basically being one last round of more… Normal dellah books before everything goes to hell? It’s one i’d highly recommend if you want to have a good time.

Tears of the Oracle: Probably my favorite of that whole range? (apart from dead romance, which I am not counting as a benny book) I love just, how much overall… feelings isn’t quite the words i’m looking for, but i can’t think of a better way to put it… there is throughout the book? It was thought to be the end of the NA as it was written and well, that shows. I love how it weaves the whole mystery of “what happened to that legendary archaeologists?” with the whole side of what’s basically some of the only survivors from dellah going on one last round of discovery. The status quo of the range was destroyed quite a few books before that one, but imo, it’s there that they take the time to stop for a bit, and just. Deals with what that means in actuality. And ngl, I love the entire sequence of Benny & Brax walking through the wreckage of what used to be their home, it’s a scene that works really, really well.

And well, it does a great job at setting up the future as well after all! Yes, there’s still 3 books after it, but when you look at where Big Finish picked up… they went for what Tears of the Oracle was setting up. It really makes the transition flows well between those two, unlike my rambling for a full paragraph before going to “here’s the BF books I like”

The Doomsday Manuscript: A very good start for the range! Not only does it set up the whole collection, but it also introduces the Fifth Axis as a major threat, and does so in a wonderfully well paced book that keeps you hooked throughout. I like how it also sets up Jason’s loss as something Benny is still suffering over, as well as how she hasn’t lost hope in finding him again. Plus frankly, it’s also a really good story.

The Glass Prison: You’d think that for a book where Benny spends the majority of it in prison and not very active due to being near the end of her pregnancy, not much would happen, but the way Jacqueline Rayner builds up an atmosphere of unease, mistrust and a genuine disturbing ambiance throughout the book is just, fantastic.

Genius Loci: This book. This book!!! Ben Aaronovitch writes an absolutely powerful story of Benny as a young woman, lost and finding herself faced with far more responsibility than she ever thought possible. The way he writes the whole mystery, while also making Benny as a 20yo not only believable, but quite distinct from Benny as the adult we’ve all come to know and love is just. So good. My main grip with this book is how abruptly it ends, and how we’ll never get the sequel. I want to read Terra Incognita and more of Benny slowly finding herself damn it!

Dead Men Diaries: Just like Doomsday Manuscript, does a great job at establishing the collection as well as the recurring cast. I really enjoy most of the stories in it, and I think BF started out so strong on those books srsly!

A Life in Pieces: I love it so much. It’s pure brax at his most manipulative, and for such petty reasons. I really like how it both deals with the aftermath of the Fifth Axis occupation, as well as the repercussions Brax’s schemes have for the people living on the collection. Also, it’s just 3 very good novellas in a row that build up to something more, and I always like seeing that.

Nobody’s Children: That book has the best Draconian story in the entirety of doctor who and related. Like, yeah just that. It’s also nice to see the fallout of the Mim/Draconian war. It’s one I didn’t expect a lot out of, and frankly, I ended up really loving it.

The Vampire Curse: The middle novella is one I absolutely hated, but the other two are really good, and mixing benny and vampires is just, very fun. Also!! Predating the Predator is in it, and it is a really good take on vampires in a science fiction setting that also has some nice creep factor as well, and manages to be both a good vampire story, and a good sci fi story, which isn’t always an easy balance to find.

Life During Wartime: It’s a surprisingly hard hitting anthology about living under a fascist regime, and the compromises you have to make, the personal sacrifices and small rebellions. Honestly, there’s a lot I love about it, but certainly one of my favorite moment, is when Benny, having to dine with one of the officers, miss jones & jason, sees that the officer is nearly on to her hiding peter away, and that split second moment of “if I have to, I am willing to kill everyone in this room to protect my son” before he just laughs it off, it’s a lot of tiny moments that build up to a really well done ambiance tbh.

Something Changed: While it did the terrible, terrible sin of introducing Doggles to the world, I really love the concept of every chapter after the first being a different split universe, and how they’re all spiraling more & more out of control. It’s got some really good stories in between too, though they can also be rather hit & miss. An aspect I love about it too is how impactful Wolsey’s death ends up being.

Present Danger: That one is fun, I love how it’s basically everyone vs the deindum, a situation slipping more and more out of control, mixed with some neat stuff one the deindum’s whole temporal deal. It’s again a bit hit & miss, but it’s still a blast, and as the last anthology of the collection era, it does send it all off with a bang.

Welp. Far, far too many words later, and here we are!!! I love Benny a lot ngl, and I genuinely think that prose is the medium best suited for her. I have been rather disappointed with the more modern books, I find them far more bland than what I personally expect from Benny but ah well. Can’t always get everything.

And while it’s neither a book, nor even an official story in any mean, the fanfic “Sepelio” that’s an Hannibal au set in the Dellah era is great, and the benny story I have been enjoying the most lately. I would be remiss not to at least mention it!

I would like to share a little idea too! Norman likes Emma since... Well, since he was like 3 months old... And tbh, Ray is already tired. So he thinks about something. One day norman is peacefully reading a book and the next second Ray is asking him "hey, how do you think I should ask emma out 🤔" norman is not calm anymore 😂.

I wanted to post this drabble earlier this week, but my gums have been swelling like hell for three days straight now, and it’s being a hindrance. 

Let's do this Post-Canon style, shall we?

Ray was done.

At first, it was tolerable — they were just eleven that time. With the huge revelation of them being cattle children in an otherwise world filled with blood-wrenching demons, Norman's shipment date being settled, and Emma devising a plan for their escape, a confession wouldn't have gone a long way.

But it had been going on for far too long and he couldn't just sit around any longer doing nothing.

Especially, now that he was starting to notice the difference in the way Emma's eyes glistened when Norman was around.

Norman needed a push, and a push from his dear, old friend was just what he needed.

Ray found him buried in a book in his office, with a leather bound journal and pen next to it. He figured it was one of those updated books that gave readers an insight on how to run a multi-million business at a young age.

He snickered thinking of how the author of the book would be surprised if they knew that it was being read by a young man at the age of sixteen.

"Norman," he casually called out, to which Norman responded with a slight raise of the head.

His stare was leveled when he spoke back. "Ray, what brings you here? You never liked being in my office."

"Because it's too bland. A CEO should have a dashing room, you know. Just imagine what our clients will think once they see you for an appointment," Ray admonished, much to the extent of the chagrin reflected on his face.

"Ah, we could ask Gilda to give it a proper decorum if it'll appease your mind, Ray," Norman avered, taking into consideration the latter's concern over his office's lack of life. "Is that your only concern?"

Ray let out a chuckle to mask the unsettlement crawling within the depths of his throat.

He just hoped this little stunt of his wouldn't reach the ears of Anna.

"You got me. In fact, I had something I wanted to go over with you," he said, supporting himself on the wall facing Norman.

"What is it?" Norman inquired without raising his eyes away from the document he was transcribing on.

"Do you still plan on pursuing Emma? It's been a couple of years since we came here to this world and you still haven’t confessed or even made a move."

Norman momentarily stopped writing then proceeded again with a light chuckle. "Isn't that a bit out of the blue for you to ask, Ray?"

"Not really. Since what I'm going to say next highly concerns that question," Ray rebuffed.

Even while writing, one of Norman's eyebrow was raised. "How so?"

"Because I like Emma."

Upon hearing those words reverberate in his ears, Norman's hand swerved to the right side, ruining his penmanship and peaceful thinking altogether.

"Come again?"

"We're best friends. So it's best that you heard this from me first. I've liked her for a while now, and seeing that you still aren't doing anything, I'm assuming you've outgrown that childhood crush you had for her."

Norman hadn't noticed how the tips of his fingertips tightened their hold around the ballpoint pen. No matter how much he tried to remain stoic with the news, the scrunching of his uprooted eyebrows betrayed the nonchalance on his face.

Sighing heavily, he tapped the end of his pen rather aggressively on his desk and then laid it on the far side of the desk when he realized he was twiddling with it. 

"I'm confused. I thought you liked Anna."

Ray stiffened in place. 

How the hell did he know that? 

"I don't recall ever volunteering that information."

"Precisely why I'm confused. Because you're telling me you like Emma when I've only seen you lay your eyes on Anna."

Ray tried to brush off Norman's intrusive stares that felt more like daggers than mere curiosity.

"I don't know where this is coming from, but I'm just here to tell you that I plan on making a move on Emma. We're not eleven anymore."

Ray's last statement struck Norman head-on. They were eleven when he freely admitted to liking Emma, even volunteering to sacrifice himself for the sole purpose of keeping her safe and happy.

Yet, years had passed. They were now in the human world, and nothing had progressed from the declaration of love he willingly professed in front of Ray.

Norman remained quiet, and it was beginning to tick off Ray even more as his silence prolonged in the stillness of his office.

Ray couldn't take it anymore. He had to raise the stakes if he was going to make Norman move on his own.

"If that's your answer, then I'll be on my way." He disclosed for the last time as he lifted himself from the steadiness of the wall, slowly but surely making his way to the door.

If this wasn't going to work, then he'd have to think of another way to make Norman act.

Because there was no way in hell he was courting Emma.

"Wait."

Ray stopped in his tracks and a coy smile made its way to his lips.

He got him where he wanted him.

"Yep?" Ray swirled his head to, shrugging off the triumphant expression on his face.

Norman was less than amused. His eyebrows were furrowed, still dazed in perplexity with the newfound information. His lips were drawn in a thin line, and the back of his hands was stapled to his desk while he rose from his seat.

He still wasn’t sure of Ray’s sincerity, but he wasn't going to stand idly by, watching the woman of his dreams be snatched away without her knowing that his feelings existed. 

"If that's the case and you really want to court Emma, would you mind some competition?" Norman spoke, voice full of resolve as he adjusted the knot on his tie, not even averting his gaze from Ray. "You’re right. It’s about time I do something about that so-called childhood crush I have for Emma. I'd like to take my chances with her, too."

Ray could only smirk with his retort.

His mission was complete.

There was never a competition in the first place.

Buttercup Amanda Shepard, usually goes by butters because her name is a mouth full and she’s often asked why she doesn’t go by her middle name since it’s “normal” but she likes her first name, it’s unique. So the flower itself symbolizes humility and childishness and I think that sums her up pretty well. They were her mother’s favorite flower(i’m also a ppg stan but I digress) 

She’s 29 at the start and 32 by the end, her birthday is may 27th making her a gemini! She likes to read her horoscope when it pops up in her extranet news feed but she doesn’t take it too seriously. She’s an engineer! Like her dad, she’s always been fascinated by tech and when she was old enough she finally got her own omni-tool for her birthday and spent everyday tinkering with it and just scanning everything she could.

Her grandparents weren’t strict really but they made sure they instilled manners in her so generally she’s very polite. As for habits she’s been known to talk to herself and she can’t really be called out on it because she admits to doing it but to her it’s not weird.

Generally, despite growing up on a farm she’s scared of pigs, she’s fed them before and almost fell into their pen during it and her grandfather teased that if she wasn’t careful they’d eat her too. 

as for deepest darkest fears it’s losing her grandparents, she’s already lost her parents she wouldn’t want to lose them too.

She was born in Illinois! Childhood was pretty happy, she lost her parents when she was about 10-11, they were on the same ship and died in a crash, her grandparents raised her from that point

I think both Magnus and Alec have a big part of their lifes that have nothing to do with eachother. Okey, they are happily married and the live together but anyway... What about their hobbies? What about their own personal projects? Friends/queerplatonic relationships? I want to know who they are, besides of great politic leaders or someone's husband

i mean, i agree. i hate it when ppl reduce magnus and alec to malec or just generally care more about the romantic relationships than the other ones, nevermind bothering to develop other aspects of their lives that are just... theirs

to be fair i feel like we got a reasonable amount of that for them (for shadowhunter’s standarts of giving us content anyway). i mean, less for alec but that kinda makes sense considering that he’s spent most of his life avoiding any kind of close relationships that weren’t with his siblings like the plague and generally being, like, raised in a military based society with the weight of the world on his shoulders and also gay. but i totally agree that we should have gotten more of him getting out of his shell and finding hobbies and friends beyond just a romantic relationship. and for magnus, well, we know that he likes physics and science and studying magic as a whole, and dancing, and we know about his friends aka catarina and ragnor and raphael and dot, we know about his found family and his club and that he likes parties and good food and drinks, travelling, and meeting new people and cultures. you know?

but anyway, other headcanons with little things about their lives:

alec is totally the workout gay who likes fucking, idk jogging every morning and shit, and for some reason i can see him being into mountain climbing???? and magnus is like No Thank You. I Will Do Literally Anything Else because yikes the amount of effort and sweat and it’s just generally unpleasant. magnus is far from being sedentary, but also, no. yikes

he’s more into taking long walks in nice places and admiring the view and shit like that and he’s all like “isn’t it great? :)” and alec is like “haha yeah how far are we” because he’s just... goal-oriented and when he’s doing sports he likes to have a clear goal, something to achieve, or to push himself to his limits and all that bullcrap. while magnus likes to do it for the sake of doing it and enjoying himself and getting in contact with his own body & mind & soul and shit. they find some sort of enjoyment in it with the way alec always makes magnus laugh with his grumpiness + inability to truly understand what this whole thing is about + just general himboness, but as a whole, magnus likes to take his walks alone, so he can get that space for himself. and he’s definitely not joining in when alec is doing his weird sportsman training gimmick whatever-thing, either

same with tai-chi! magnus tried to get alec into it (altho somewhat awkwardly since magnus does magical tai chi and alec very much does not have magic) but it just, didn’t work out. one second into it and alec was already making that painfully concentrated face and he’s stiff as a board and it’s the opposite of what it’s supposed to be and magnus breaks down laughing and alec is all offended and they just can’t get past a few seconds and end up giving up. alec is the bitch who sits down to medidate and is immediately like BOY I AM GONNA GET IN TOUCH WITH MY INNER SELF SO FAST AND HARD FUCKING WATCH ME I’M GONNA BE THE BEST MEDIDATOR THIS SIDE OF THE PACIFIC FUCKING OOHMMM BITCH. introspective arts are just not for him

i like to think that alec gets closer to aline, and i can see him and helen hitting it off, too. like seriously guys let alec have friends who aren’t just magnus’ friends (and let magnus have friends that are HIS friends, too)

i know underhill is implied to become his friend but also, like..... he’s so boring i just can’t have any hcs for them as friends daoijsdaiouja i think they have more of a solidarity, nodding when walking past each other in the halls thing than actual friendship you know

obviously there’s alec’s siblings as he will always be the one izzy loves the most and she will always be one of the most important people for him, and even as magnus and izzy totally are friends too, she is still alec’s sister and they make it a point to see each other, just the two of them, at least once a week. izzy always smiles and loops her arm through his and alec’s immediately huffing but he loves it and she knows that he loves it. she was like, his only source of physical contact for so long, and god he really needed it and he loved her for giving it to him even as he pretended it was something he hated. neither of them want to shake that habit, so it stays

but there’s also a particular brand of friendship magnus has with her that alec doesn’t. like when they get all weird about dead bodies or go shopping? alec’s out 

magnus does a lot of studying (mostly languages, physics, and chemistry, as well as magic) so he has his own study room (plus the apothecary) that’s a whole damn mess filled with books and notes scattered around and shit and alec is not allowed in because he always wants to organize it and GOD FUCKING DAMN IT IT’S NOT DISORGANIZED I KNOW WHERE EVERYTHING’S SUPPOSED TO BE and if alec moves a single pen, magnus Will Know About It

in exchange he always keeps the door closed or spelled so alec doesn’t have to look at it

obviously there’s archery, which is something alec loves to do and practice, especially as he starts to get more into the bureaucratic parts of shadowhunting. he needs his bow and arrow to feel connected to himself and his body and safe, and he also has his own practicing room. magnus can do archery fine, but it’s not really among his interests

magnus of course has his regular meetings with the immortal squad and his breakfasts with raphael :) not that raphael isn’t part of the immortal squad but they also enjoy having a time just for the two of them. they are father and son after all, and besides, they lived together for quite a while, and the dynamics of them versus them + ragnor + cat are different

while magnus loves taking alec with him in his trips and to art galleries and out to eat in great restaurants and shit, they both know it’s something that alec, while very curious to know about, does not appreciate the same way that he does. not more or less, just, differently. if they go to an art gallery, magnus is gonna be looking at every piece and musing and maybe talking about the painters of x and y movement that he knew, and analyzing the technique or whatever. alec is less interested in the paintings themselves and more in the artists, what their life was like, what the period/place they lived in was like, how that shaped their art, you know? like he’s just not a very visual person haha me projecting never so what interests him is more outside of the paintings than inside. so even when they go to these places together, they’re just having completely different experiences? and a lot of the time they end up straying and meeting each other later, where they’ll chat and generally be ridiculous. but the both of them also enjoy going to those on their own or with their friends who Get It, you know? because again just completely different rhythms and interests and stuff

i feel like they both enjoy trashy television, but like, in completely different ways? like magnus loves him a terrible sitcom even if he’ll never admit it, where alec is more into like..... really bad and dramatic mystery shows

they both enjoy watching reality shows though. magnus wasn’t that huge on it before, but with alec? man, that’s a riot. he’ll judge absolutely everyone and make faces and just generally be fucking hilarious

ok i know that i’m talking about things they do together but my goal here is to talk about like... who they are and what their interests are individually, even if they are together, you know? and not like, As An Unit

magnus loves music and recitals and dance shows of all kinds. also, street art! i feel like that’s something him, cat, and maia have in common

speaking of cat; there are always His Cats. like sure they like alec fine but as soon as magnus is home they all immediately flock to him. it’s like alec never existed. goodbye, tall person

tbh i feel like raphael is totally an animals person and soon the dumort kind of turns into like, a sort of animal shelter? like magnus gives him the idea and all the vampires are naturally drawn to the idea of the dumort becoming a place for the strays of the world, especially if it means they get some company.... and maybe warm cuddles. anyway, my point is, magnus loves to visit the dumort and play with the cats and dogs that are there from time to time and he’s so proud of raphael and what he’s doing with the place and i just aaa :’) 

i feel like alec would have an interest in technology? like he’d be that bitch who Knows tech (probably started because of his job, but soon he found that he like, actually has an interest in it?) and who cleans his keyboard every day and only gets licensed programmes and takes care of his laptop like those guys who are weird about cars

lmao for some reason i can totally picture him and aline bonding over that? 

oh man alec would be into PUZZLES. word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, the whole grandpa shit. he doesn’t do it often but when he does, he’s just At It. him and madzie can play with jigsaw puzzles for hours and wouldn’t remember to eat. she visits one day and is like I Got A 3D Puzzle and alec is just like neat! and they just sit down and do it until they have to be forced to bed or something. then at like precisely 6AM their eyes snap open like It’s A New Day, Puzzle Time and it just keeps being like this until they’re done

also there’s magnus’ morning routine, of course, especially since he doesn’t really have a schedule, and as sociable as he is he does enjoy some alone time to make himself some breakfast, do some tai chi, maybe read a book or comic, and all that. alec is just snoring the whole time completely passed out when it’s not a work day, tbh

My honest assessment of every version of MDZS now that I have consumed at least part of all of them, best and worst aspects of each.

The Untamed/CQL, the first version I encountered:

The best part of this show is literally every single moment that wwx and lwj are onscreen together. Every time they gaze into each other’s eyes I am reminded that love is in fact real. The last 20 episodes are just Wangxian on main and I love every moment of the Cloud Recesses part of the flashback. I would absolutely die for Wang Yibo and his absolutely stellar micro expressions.

I love this gem of a show. However, I can also acknowledge it is occasionally prone to corniness and the effects budget was I’m assuming quite low and thus some visual elements are deeply amusing. It’s part of the charm though and not that big a deal. Also it did have to have some aspects of the original story heavily censored, which is sad. But like, tbh, the production team still made it an explicit romance and it doesn’t Feel censored at all. Honestly the romance is that good. Episodes 42-46 in particular are just 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

Also full honesty I fast forwarded through quite a few villain scenes during the flashback cause they were kind of dragging and I wanted to get back to my boys and then I kept being like ‘who the heck is this’ when the villain stuff I fast forwarded turned out to be like actuallly important later.

The original version from the pen of MXTX herself, the book in fantranslation which I read immediately after finishing CQL:

Wow. Wow. The jump from watching the end of CQL and their wistful parting and stuff and then opening the book and seeing there’s a chapter titled wangxian and obviously reading that one first before going back to the beginning and finding out that instead of parting wistfully at the end they fuck off the side of the road and then elope. Amazing. Incredible. The 20 post canon fluffy (and kinky wow very kinky did not expect that but really quite pleased) one shots. Absolutely incredible thank you MA’AM.

The one downside: Please for the love of god why do so many of these anal sex scenes have to feature a lack of lubrication and proper preparation like I can be down with the noncon kink stuff but Dear God please include some lube and a smidge of fingering in there somewhere.

The manhua, of which I only read the most recent 30 or so chapters as of a couple months ago:

GREAT from what I read so far including the fact that it included an uncensored kiss from the book! Didn’t include Phoenix Mountain but did include LWJ getting drunk and tying WWX up with his forehead ribbon, bless up.

The only downside as far as I can tell is that it’s not finished.

The donghua, which I started a month ago and only watched two episodes but then started again today and watched basically the whole thing.

This opinion may be unpopular but this is the best adaptation by far, objectively. Being adapated in animation allows the fights and the magic to be just Incredible. It’s so well paced, better than Untamed, and manages to be quite close to the book while still cutting out and changing a few things. Actually made me cry about the destruction of Lotus Pier and made me sad about Yu ZiYuan.

And the clincher, Wei Wuxian is at his Most Badass. I cannot overemphasize how fucking hyped I was when he appeared amidst a flock of crows on top of a roof to kick Wen Chao’s ass. The fight scenes where wwx and lwj are working together are sooooooooo goooooooooood.

The downsides are yes that it does censor and skim over some of the wangxian content. But here’s the thing. They’re still 100% in love and some lines that I definitely didn’t expect to make it through censorship from the book are included so here’s hoping for some good shit in season 3.

Oh yeah that’s the other downside. It’s not finished, the final season isn’t scheduled till 2021 (but also corona so like who knows what that’s gonna do to production). S2 ends at the beginning of Yi City.

And last but Certainly not least, the audio drama:

12. Would you like to be famous? If so, what for? I’d be so down. I have no idea for what though, like I’ve always wanted to act so I guess that.

13. Are you a restless sleeper? Not unless I’m beside someone or the room is light. 

14. Do you consider yourself to be a romantic person? No overly. I appreciate some acts of romance but too much sappiness makes me uncomfortable. 

15. Which element best represents you? Air? I don’t know, I’ve never really felt connected to any elements... I say air cause I’m an air sign 

16. Who do you want to be closer to? Louis lol why can’t I just be best friends with him? No but for real, I don’t know, if I want to be close with someone then I’ll make it happen

17. Do you miss someone at the moment? Yea, my friend Chloe from the camp I used to work at. I haven’t seen her since January :(

18. Tell us about an early childhood memory. My friend and I used to act out Harry Potter all the time as Ginny and Cho and one time we jumped on a trampoline for three hours in 35 Celsius in our pjs playing it and pretending to have a snowball fight with Voldemort. 

19. What is the strangest thing you have eaten? Soft shell crabs? Crab isn’t weird obviously but like the soft shell ones are really tiny and you just eat it whole, shell and all.

21. Do you like spicy food? Yeah, but I don’t love adding hot sauce to everything, like sometimes food doesn’t have to be spicy to be good. 

22. Have you ever met someone famous? Like a few Canadian politicians (Harper 🤮 and Nenshi)

28. Do you like reading? What was the last book you read? I really only read fanfiction cause I find it easier to focus on. The last fanfic I read was Together in  Electric Dreams by harreloujah

29. How do you show someone you love them? Making them laugh, spending time with them, annoying the hell out of them :)

31. What are you afraid of? Nothing really. I mean I will jump at jump scares or like I can sike myself up to think there’s a monster going to come out of my closet and like big waves in the middle of the ocean make me a little anxious but I’m not afraid of things really.

34. If money was not a factor, how would you live your life? Doing the things I enjoy like travelling and hobbies and spending time with people

35. Do you prefer swimming in pools or the ocean? I don’t really love swimming (I did too much competitive swimming to enjoy it anymore) but probably the ocean because I like diving 

36. What would you do if you found $50 on the ground? Leave it there. Unless there was like a homeless person nearby I guess? But I wouldn’t take it or try to find an owner or anything (unless I saw them drop it)

38. What is one thing you would want to teach your children? To think for themselves and to be kind to everyone

39. If you had to have a tattoo, what would it be and where would you get it? I think the first one I’m going to get is going to be in the same spot/style of Louis’ “Far Away” one, but I’m either going to get “Only the Brave” “Lost In My Head” or “Set Fire To History”

49. Invent a word and its meaning. Fialey (which turns out is a last name but I tried 8 different words and they were all French words) but it’s the overwhelming feeling of pure love and adoration you get when you see your lover passionate and excited about things.
