She scrunched up her nose in thought, then checked her mug to make sure that there definitely wasn’t any tea left at the bottom that had escaped her notice the last time she checked. She then considered going to get more tea.  Then took into account that this was way too much of an effort and there was a perfectly comfortable and rather irritable cat on her that she did not wish to disturb. So, even in the unlikely event in which I do decide that I can, in fact, be a productive person who rises up to and completes challenges that I am met with, and therefore decide to put on some jeans – along with the other items of clothing necessary when one intends to walk down the corner shop without getting arrested – and leave the safety of my home to buy cake, I will not be able to stand from my seat because my cat is a stubborn little cu- she stopped, breathed in, breathed out, deleted the last two letters and instead wrote, pest who gets rather attached to the warmth my lap provides and isn’t afraid to dig her claws into my unprotected thighs.  She sighs and strokes Dusty’s tiny head with bitter affection and unconcealed resignation.  The cat squirms slightly under her touch and begins to purr.  The clock’s ticking and tocking is the only other noise in the lowly-lit apartment.  She smiles down at the cat and closes her eyes, her neck is aching, and her brain is tired.  She continues to type, I want to learn French, if only because it will make me seem more ‘cultured,’ but also because for some reason I feel as though it might help me to finally enjoy a variety of cheeses. I also don’t mean that I do not value myself because I do.  She bit her lip again, admonished herself and wished, yet again, that she had tea. In his personal projects, Toms shoots at night, drawing on existing sources of light: the moon (Midnight Modern), the neon lights of Tokyo (Nihon Noir) or the harsh street lights of LA (Noct Angeles). Here is photographed in Palm Springs earlier this year. Photo – Kate Ballis.

Though he’s now one of Melbourne’s most exciting young photographers, Tom Blachford went through school not feeling particularly creative, or having any inclination of what he might have wanted to create.

He started studying marketing at RMIT, but found it unfulfilling, and admits he was a pretty bad student. Things all changed when he got a DSLR camera for his 20th birthday. From the first moment picking it up, Tom just knew it felt right, and fell completely in love with the photographic process, particularly shooting at night. ‘I realised the camera was a bridge to a world just beyond my perceptions that most people never get to glimpse,’ as he tells it.

Waving goodbye to that marketing degree, Tom persisted through ‘many years of truly terrible photos’. He worked for five years as a part-time assistant for other photographers including James Geer, before leaving the ‘safety net’ to concentrate fully on his own work. Today, he has carved out a career specialising in interiors and architecture photography, for the likes of DKO, Techne Architects, FIGR, Elenberg Fraser, Foolscap, Studio Esteta. and more, as well as shooting aerial photography and his fine art work. Much of the latter, especially his Midnight Modern Series (published in a monograph by Powerhouse 2017), and more recent Nihon Noir have gained global acclaim, and been published by top international outlets.

We recently caught up with Tom to talk timewarps and dream-come-true moments, plus his forthcoming debut solo show in New York!

Was there a particular moment that inspired your long-running Midnight Modern Series, and what keeps drawing you back to Palm Springs?

On our first visit to Palm Springs in 2013, I vividly remember a moment standing outside an unbelievable asymmetrical butterfly mid-century home in the Twin Palms neighbourhood, as the sun was just about to set behind the mountain. There were only vintage cars on the street and perfectly restored houses from 1957. I had this inexplicable feeling I had fallen through a time warp back to another era. It was the confusion of knowing where I was but not when I was. The Midnight Modern Series has been about translating that feeling into my work. Shooting by moonlight adds an extra layer of mystery, that for many viewers it is hard for them to tell if the images are taken by day or at night, in 1957 or 2017.

The generosity and passion of the homeowners and community is what has really kept the series moving forward. By chance, I was contacted by the owner of that house, which I had been in front of on that very first day, and just over a year later, I was invited back to stay and even hold an exhibition there. That’s one of a now almost endless list of dream-come-true moments that have happened over the course of shooting the series.

On a more practical level, Palm Springs has a very unique set of attributes that have really made it the only place this particular series can exist: a huge stock of perfectly restored mid-century homes, an epic mountain backdrop, a desert climate with very few clouds to block the moon and, most bizarrely, no street lamps in the old suburbs to pollute the scene with light!

You have a penchant for shooting at night. What’s the most challenging aspect of this, and how do you work around it?

It’s hard to nail down a particularly difficult element, the whole exercise has been an incredibly challenging, grueling process and one that has required a lot of thought, research, and trial and error to get to a point where I could make the most of each night. I would normally shoot from 7pm-4am for five nights in a row (two nights either side of full moon) and spend the days scouting and arranging access and cars with the homeowners. I really pushed my mind, stamina and equipment to the limits!

For all my work, exposed light sources (any street lights or landscape lighting) become the enemy if I can’t tame them by moving, covering them or cropping them. There have been many times, I’ve wished I could have had a magic wand (or airgun!) to shoot out a single light bulb that was ruining a whole shot!

What I enjoy most about the aesthetic is to be able to show people the world that my camera allows me access to, a world of rich colours, contrasts and detail that are usually hidden just beyond our senses behind a veil of darkness. I’ve been able to show people places they thought they knew in a completely different way which has been amazing.

A yet-to-be-released series shot in Bolivia last year is also centred around architecture. Have you always been fascinated with architecture, and why do you think architecture lends itself to captivating art imagery?

I can’t actually draw or paint, so I began to be interested in architecture when I realised that I could combine the lines and geometries with my camera and selective composition to create graphic imagery – something I was really drawn to but wasn’t sure how to bring to life in any other way. I began to start re-interpreting the built environment to suit my own frame, and loved what I could create out of abstracting what was around me.

With Midnight Modern and my newer series, that evolved into a fascination with buildings as the sets for narratives, both real and imagined. I’m obsessed with the infinite number of stories that buildings play host to, as well as those that are projected on them by people who walk or drive by and wonder what goes on behind their walls. In a way they become sculptural and literal manifestations of the feeling of being an insider or an outsider.

You’ve hinted at a releasing a ‘Post Modern 3D Project’ next year. In addition to being visually engaging, you want the experience to “ask questions about what is real, what is good taste and what are our responsibilities to architectural preservation”. Why are bringing these topics to the forefront important to you, especially at this time?

The project is about creating alternate design backstories for the most famous Modernist houses of all time. I’m imagining what it would have looked like if post-modernism found its way into the most staunchly modernist buildings. The line between renders and photography is completely gone, the average person is now completely unable to tell the difference between the two. Instead of fighting this I’m interested in exploring it and magnifying it.

After becoming deeply connected to the modernism community, I realised the extent to which great buildings had been destroyed just as they were beginning to be appreciated. Whilst I can’t bring all of them back from the rubble, I am interested in trying to do what I can for architectural preservation and highlighting the choice that we have: to love and fight for something we don’t understand and that is no longer fashionable or start afresh to repeat the cycle in the name of progress. I can see both sides of the debate, but I think it’s most interesting to explore the predicament.

In a way, Midnight Modern was a very ‘modernist’ project in its minimalism and serious dedication to the purist forms of the era, and the restrictions I placed upon myself. This new project is an opportunity for me to take the ‘less is a bore’ not ‘less is more’ approach, and to really go wild and inject some humour and subversion into the series. I’m actually a very sarcastic and humour-driven person, but it was hard to convey that in my other work which has been quite serious.

You’ve also described this project as ‘A mash-up of the worlds of fake news, McMansion Hell and Memphis Milano.’ What are you getting at when you say McMansion Hell?

McMansion hell is a great blog that humorously as well as academically tears to pieces some of the monstrosities of modern construction, in the age of ‘bigger is better’ – completely inflexible and compromised design.

I’m interested in the perspective of the home owners and their mindset to build exactly as they want things and to compete with each other as well as their tendency to completely mash-up and mis-use classical elements. In a way, I admire their single-mindedness and dedication to function over form, in another sense I abhor them for the blandness it has created. My new 3D series is going to feature written components that delve into the character and motivations of the owners who have chosen to forsake modernism in favour of post-modernism, inspired by my experiences in the real world shooting for architects and designers.

Can you give us any insight into your creative process – how do you find inspiration and then what steps do you take in turning that into an exhibit-able body of work?

My series are usually trying to connect the architecture of a place with a feeling… and adding in a sense of mystery. As such, my process has been to plan less and just get on the ground and start shooting, and try to connect with my impulses for what I’m drawn to. From there, I try to tweak my approach to translate my feeling of what the nights in that place feel like to me. For Palm Springs it was about glamour and hedonism, for LA about paranoia and tension, and for Tokyo it was about the feeling of being in a futuristic parallel universe.

My new 3D series is a whole new process, which I’m still navigating! It’s far more about ideation, design and refinement, which is both exciting and challenging.

Tapping into some paranoia and tension, If you’ve got to desert your studio right this minute, and can only bring along one item, what do you grab and why?

Yikes, hard to pick one… but I guess my 45mm Tilt Shift Lens. This is what I have shot 99% of my fine art work on. For me, no other lens gives a more interesting and flexible perspective on architecture (providing I can get back far enough!).

Your partner Kate Ballis is also an accomplished photographic artist/photographer that we have featured on TDF. Do you guys talk photography much? And how do you think you have influenced one another’s work?

I spend pretty much every waking hour thinking about something to do with photography and can’t help myself talking shop at any and all hours of the day. Though we don’t often shoot at the same time (commercially or in our projects) we still work very collaboratively, and try to help each other tease out ideas and aesthetics. We rarely release anything without seeking each others opinion and expertise first.

Kate has an incredible work ethic and a laser-like focus that really inspired me to work through any big ideas that I have had and stay committed to seeing them through. There is no way I could have attempted anything like Midnight Modern without her support.

Is traveling the world as a photographer as amazing as you guys, and your projects, make it look?

We are extremely fortunate to have been able to build a life that gives us the flexibility and incentive to travel and shoot new places.

Sometimes we do just look forward to being home with our dog and family and friends but in general, we feel very lucky and love what we do. We work really hard on location, so it’s not all champagne and rainbows but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

What’s next for Tom Blachford?

My first New York solo show is coming up in October so I’m very much looking forward to that. I’m also hoping to get back to Bolivia later in the year to continue my yet-to-be named series on the post-Andean architecture of El Alto and, in between, find time to design and plan my 3D Post Modern Project with my collaborator Mr P Studio.

A few days transcript

Travelled to another camp at the Southern end of Lake Malawi. The journey took us along the Rift Valley into the beautiful mountains around the lake. When we neared the top, we stopped to allow us to take photos of the lake , but I looked up and saw a order of prey circling the valley before us. Took a picture and Richard, one of our resident vets/ornithologist identified it as a black Kite. Wow, beautiful.

Looking at the lake from there, I thought about how I learned about the Great Lakes and the Rift Valley in school so long ago and how incredibly fortunate I am to be able to experience all this.

The journey took a full 8 hours with a few stops, one of them being a police check. An officer came into the bus, walked around and asked where the cider was. We didn’t have any, so he accepted a bottle of water instead.

Arrived at the camp around 330pm, it’s paradise. I have a lovely room with a huge bed and it’s en suite. So much more comfortable than the last few nights. It’s not a 5 star bathroom, but it’s a bathroom so yaayy.

Today there was a local village tour which was included in the tour. An 8 hour mountain walk was optional as was wood carving but decided to have a relaxing day. Leaving the camp, we had to pass a number of shops selling wooden ornaments and things, where we were bombarded by the local vendors. These followed us for the whole tour, making sure we returned to their stall at the end.

First stop was the local primary school where the younger children don’t have desks and have to sit on the floor. The classes are about 60 strong and a mixture of ages. The youngsters kept catching hold of our hands. We were given a talk by the head master then handed a donation box.

Next was an orphanage, which looks after 45 local children who have been orphaned, usually through aids. There were only 6 there today, but felt awkward as they were basically gold to perform for us. Again a donation box. Finally onto the local hospital, which was more like a doctors surgery but without the sterile environment and again another donation box.

The wood carving vendors then took us to their stalls, where I bought a few presents after haggling really well.

After lunch, relaxed in the shade of one of the camp covered areas on the beach, reading my book in the shade and breeze. Fantastic. The 2 retired ladies, Maria and May joined me and Maria took a fancy to a parked mobile home type truck, asked the owner if we could see inside. Very impressive and brilliant to travel Africa if you know how to fix mechanical things.

I was finally tempted to go in the water, being reassured by everyone that there is no biloxia in this area of the lake. It was glorious, tepid fresh water, waves and sandy under foot.

We stopped at a really busy Market place a short while before crossing the border. It’s obviously a frequent stop for border crossers, the locals were friendly if pushy. The buzz and vibrant colours worn by the local women was brilliant. Bought the best mango I’ve ever had for 30p.

As we traveled along the Rift Valley, the lush green of the vegetation continued banana groves and to tea plantations high in the mountains. This scene is marred only by the tonnes of plastic bottles and bags littering the side of the roads for the whole journey.

Finally after nearly 10 hours driving, we reached the border with Malawi. An hour and half and at the border then 3 hours inside Malawi to the lake. Absolutely exhausted but they have s bar and a cold beer so yaayy.

6.30 set off for game drive in the park. We were put into the typical safari jeeps you see on tv, they re perfect for it though. I wasn’t sure we would see anything but even from the road, we saw a buffalo that had been killed prob by a lion, a lion cub and a lioness. Inside the park, the guides were able to find lots of game for us, lions mating right in front of us crocodiles, one came from nowhere and tried to catch a bird right in front of us , elephants walked across the road in front of us, lots of giraffes, vultures finishing off a deer, hippos. I feel so very lucky to have been able to make this trip and see all these animals in the wild.

There’s a mixture of people in the group, vets, teachers, app designer and 2 other retired women. This all makes for a varied conversation at meal times.

Time to move on again at lunchtime. We passed flat dry plains making our way into the mountains. As we climbed, the scorching hot temperatures fell slowly so that by the time we arrived at our camp, it was a pleasant manageable heat. On the way, a bird, apparently a speckled mouse bird flew into our truck. Very pretty with a long tail. Fortunately the vet, Richard managed to catch it without injuring it and set it free gently when we stopped.

We re staying at a place owned by a British family who’ve lived here for generations. It’s called a farm, but shows no resemblance to one. No en suite for me here, have to go outside onto the grounds for the shared toilets and shower s.

A long day on the road travelling from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi National Park.

Our truck has windows really big windows that open all the way down, so the temperature inside the truck was pleasant.

The scenery along the route changed from what I would call shrub land to vast open plains with a few bigger trees dotted here and there. We could see a mountain range in the distance, which we eventually neared, but didn’t go through it.

Along the route, the villages seemed to be defined by their road side stalls, thete were all sorts, from wooden bed frames amongst other things, coffins, clothes hanging from trees and basket ware with numerous brick and block sellers. We passed only a couple of hotels such as Vatican City pub lodge and Good time guest house.

When we entered Mikumi National park, the wildlife was almost immediately visible. I caught my first sight of baboons, zebras, giraffes and wilder beast .

The camp is in the middle of the wild and so has rangers walking around, particularly at night. My cabin is a lovely, very basic lodge type thing but very hot.

I. You left me with such a silent world.

Anecdotes, passed on from generations of self-proclaimed wisdom flourished fossils tend to claim that if you build your walls high enough, it is presumed that only the deserving will brave the journey.

There are four gates that embrace the valley of Seoul, a protective barrier that once restricted the foreign from being allowed into the walls of a fortress that formerly held an entire kingdom behind its stone. Of the four, Haesol was born behind the East gate, Heunginjimun which left the lips with literal benevolence. But he knew this gate he called home, as Dongdaemun.

Home was the stray cracks in the cement he strategically hopped over – one hundred fifty-two of them to be exact, but who’s counting? – every day on his way to and from school.

Home was the pair of convenient store chocolate ice cream cones his father hid in a black plastic bag to share – since his mother complained about cavities – after a long week.

Home was the frozen persimmons and scented erasers that the older lady who ran the stationary store loved to bundle up in cheese cloth and send him home with, even when he didn’t buy anything.

Home was Happy, the neighborhood stray, that he snuck his unfinished dinner to while he talked about his day before he would kiss his mom goodbye and be forced to bed.

Home was the jazz records he listened to in the summer afternoons when the temperature was just a little too hot to go outside and play.

Home was the rare nights where his soft breaths were diminished by his mom’s hands stroking his hair back until he was lulled to sleep.

Home is a cozy two bedroom two bath, coddled between narrow roads and brick walls. Home is his father, a simple paper pusher at a small advertisement and marketing firm. Home is his mother, the owner of an expanded food stall that served an eclectic variety of cheap alcohol married with seasonal dishes. Home was behind the East gate of benevolence. But home also tended to only consist of Haesol himself.

And when his parents make the decision to move to Mapogu, he really isn’t sure where home is anymore. Or if he had ever had one to begin with.

II. Where evenings are calm, but I am restless.

Haesol is ten when he first decides that he is perfectly capable of living on his own. Equipped with a backpack filled with three days’ worth of canned stews and vegetables along with a roll of toilet paper and change of socks, he peered out the window with one eye closed from the back of the bus while his index and thumb squished his usual stop between his pale fingers.

There was only one place that he wanted to run away to, and that was home.

When he reached his familiar stop in Dongdaemun, he was more than eager to get off and indulge in chocolate ice cream cones, frozen persimmons, and scented erasers. Most of all, he wanted to see his friend, Happy. But it doesn’t take more than hour for him to realize that the neighborhood he had been pacing up and down – with no familiar faces in sight – was not his home.

It’s almost midnight when a police officer finds the sloppy mess of tears and boogers painted across the child’s face; feeble body hunched near a brick wall from exasperated exhaustion, the officer called the station to confirm that this was the child that skipped school and had a pair of frantic parents on the other line.

And Haesol spends the night at the officer’s home before he is returned to his parents who promise that they can all visit their old home again some time; which never comes into fruition, but as he got older, he forgave his parents because he knew they wanted to fulfill that promise, at least.

But he never does find Happy.

III. My breath has become as thin as the wind.

“What’s got you always smiling, kid?”

When you have less than a word to utter and a thousand, million different thoughts cluttering your skull, wouldn’t you rather shut the hell up for a second and just listen to what has your brain rattling?

Haesol was a daydreamer, nothing else to it really, just always occupied in his own head. A vivid imagination that contained a fervent collection of fiction and non-fiction that plagued his thoughts. Not that he had mind it as much as his peers and the adult figures in his life had, though.

At first, all his teachers had assumed he was simply shy. Quiet and seemingly meek, he always had the crumbs of a smile left on his lips that curved the end of his mouth. But it lacked presence. The smile itself, was genuine. Always. But no one ever knew why he would be smiling. And he always managed to cause an uproar when he did actually open his mouth, asking his obviously female teacher if she had a male’s sexual reproductive organ or revealing that he had seen the principal take off his toupee to the entire student body during the talent show.

But in exchange, he had always been a good listener. Always.

Never one to neglect the honest plea for a simple penny exchange, he had always found himself in the situation of a sacred practitioner preparing to bless and relieve sin from the damned that has professed a confession. But just as so, he was never graced with more than that.

IV. You enjoy coffee and Debussy.

The fundamental nature of humans included very few motives which comprised, but were not limited to: eating, sleeping, and reproducing. Amongst these categories stemmed a variety of arbitrary, however somewhat entertaining and pleasurable inclusions. One of the few optional choices was romance, up to the discretion of the participant, of course. But Haesol was a desolate onlooker when it came to romance, not one to humor the idea nor let it humor him. By all means, he never saw anything wrong with a pair, falling in love – and he still doesn’t. His parents had succumbed to the customary tradition themselves but in retrospect, he knew it was not for him.

But she talks like a breeze during an August afternoon and kisses him like the rain in June.

Bruised plums stain his skin when her lips leave the hollow of his neck, whispering strange strings of words that perplexingly tangle before they even reach him. With her, he wants to be absolutely everything she wants him to be.

Enkindled with a convex reflection of a slow burning flame behind a pair of glossy irises as dark as a bittersweet malt roasted warm and sticky, he found himself lodged somewhere between empathetic and in love. And he isn’t sure if it’s because when he holds up a mirror he can see those same eyes hiding behind his lashes or that she is everything he isn’t.

But there was one thing that he was absolutely certain of, she was his home.

V. And nothing takes your place, your emptiness too great to fill.

Staring down towards the pearl hued item between his fingers, he turned it over a few times in hesitation. Three hours into his sixteenth birthday and somehow, between the alcohol and cocktail of unknown drugs that were swimming through his blood – not to mention the “trip” to the grocery store that he could barely recall – he had become convinced that egging some stranger’s house may have been even a minuscule of fun.

But now, he wasn’t quite so sure.  

And when they wake up at the police department, covered in the dried starch of egg whites and yolk, he knew he was busted. The scrutinizing eyes of passing officers riddled every inch of the perimeter as the individuals would pass by the two, their parents being phoned on the other line with hushed tones. And all that seems to be processing is that as soon as he sees his parents, he knows he is getting a new asshole, courtesy of his dad’s hands ripping him a fresh one. But her hand is in his, and the way her fingers squeeze his flesh is as if to whisper in that very moment that nothing else mattered.

And he truly believed that.

With all the ephemeral, fleeting moments that he had not captured during their intrepid wanders through the city past midnight, he realized that he needed to preserve the instances. Leaning against a desk, he stole away a small pad of sticky notes before scribing onto the pale yellow, a stream of consciousness that he observed before him. And this grows into a habit, bound between series of black leather.

The complication that he had created between his parents seemed exponential compared to his companion’s. Not that his parents had ever been around enough to rear him into an upstanding adult within society – but who could blame them? They were simply working under the conditions that they had always been, and that was to provide for their only son.

But she received a slap on the wrist before being told that Korea University is her only option. Provided that she repents through getting accepted into the university. But with her grades – not to mention, government connections – this was redundant and perhaps rhetoric, in nature.

And when Haesol hears that from her mouth, although he isn’t great with school, he starts studying his ass off. Textbooks begin to fill his room, each page smeared with old copper from consecutive nosebleeds that seem to grow more concerning with each sheet.

When the acceptance letter reaches his parent’s hands they are unable to form a response, impressed – and shocked, to say the least – when he manages to not only get accepted to one of the top universities in the nation but also, into the scholarship pool. But it isn’t enough. It forces his parents to pick up extra hours to help him pay for the forty-five minute commute to a school he is less than eager to attend.

Through a few connections, he manages to land himself a job at a local karaoke bar. The place smells like a wild concoction of buffalo wings, vomit, and beer and while the pay isn’t great the tips fill his pockets so thick that he doesn’t have a moment to complain. Not when he needs to pay for tuition.

And Haesol isn’t really made for institutionalized study, he never has been, but she’s there. And that’s all that matters, that’s all that has mattered.

VI. But what does it take to believe in all the thing you believe?

And Haesol is nineteen when the keys to their apartment finally reach his palm. The moment is sweet and warm like honey on his tongue, and he never forgets it. However, it muddles amongst the screaming matches and broken plates that are aimed at him. But perhaps he had expected a honeymoon in Fiji and that was his fault.

Psychology is the only choice that makes sense to him. And he muses to himself that just maybe, he can fix her. The unstable fits of toxic arguments were like a cold lug of metal aimed at his throat, constantly ticking until the bullet was to soar through him the moment she set it off. It starts off as peeling him apart with little insults like cigarette burns under his wrists but they turn into the vases he brings home on Valentine’s Day, after they have kissed the wall and spilled on the ground like a kaleidoscope amongst withered petals of she-loves-me-nots.  

But he applies what he learns earnestly, just not one to translate his work ethic into exam material. But one professor in particular sees a bit of themselves in him, so they offer the daydreaming C student a chance to intern at their sleep clinic to study the dream patterns – from verbal recitation of patients to the machine’s interpretations –, the brain waves, and tossing and turning physical habits of those in the clinic. He learns to love it there because he was never really a classic student to begin with.

Some nights, he would spend his time simply watching those who slept, wondering if they shared the same dreams as himself.

VII. And we fall apart without intention.

The abrasion is shaped like a cloud along his forearm, but it feels more like a mile wide and ten miles deep and he imagines if he were ever to try and jump it, he wouldn’t make it. But who would?

The swelling beneath his eye has finally gone down, and the bruise has faded into mustard remnants mixed amongst black cherry juice. And he likes neither.

The splint that sits around his middle and fourth finger carry them tight between marshmallow gauze and a metal cast. But he still makes sure to wear their couple ring.

But he starts to wonder why he is still wearing it at all.

VIII. But I can’t deny that I didn’t think ahead.

And she finally catches a glimpse of what she looks like from the other side of the one-way mirror that was bound between the library of leather books. Though the words were strings of affection that lingered in his reminiscence, she is far from infatuated. The infuriation stems from the way she is captured, like a subject in a petri dish. And later he wonders if she was the delusional one, or perhaps, was he? Honestly, he isn’t so sure if he wrote about her because he was in love or curiosity watered an obscure obsession that grew into a habit.

Whether he was rational or not, she doesn’t tell him that she has found his secret.

IX. You’ve got control, but I don’t mind.

At first, it was a childish request to flip up the skirt of the short-haired classmate who rode the subway in the same car as them. And he did it, of course. Another time, he stole twenty cartons of Marlboro cigarettes from the corner store and smoked them all in one sitting.

But he barely had a chance to watch the escalation as he found himself getting undressed, staring into the eyes of a stranger that had no resemblance to his companion. And she was bare and pale like marble strewn across their maroon sheets. When he looks up, he sees the glossy irises as dark as a bittersweet malt, roasted warm and sticky like when he first met her.

And he fucks the stranger with a desolate gaze that isn’t quite towards her or the malt irises.

It isn’t anywhere.

And he knows she has become estranged, but perhaps he realizes their romance, or whatever the hell it was – the one he had never saw an ending to – was tumbling down a misshapen denouement. With every wish to reach into her flesh and light a lantern upon her spine to tell her all he saw in her was light, she gained another pair of lips to revel in.

And he probably knew that.

But he didn’t want to know.

When he sees her, body tangled with a stranger, he swears he must be a passerby. This couldn’t have been his home. These two? They must have both been unnameable faces. And he can’t remember what he said, or what he did.

But it smells like gasoline.

Trying to extinguish the pages of infatuation he had captured for several years – half because he wanted to salvage them and half because fires were obvious hazards – he found himself staring into the flame. As if the slow burning concave reflection behind her pair of glossy irises as dark as a bittersweet malt, roasted warm and sticky, were still staring back at him.

And he stops and he watches the flames lick at its luminescent body as if it were an unexplainable creature, tending to its wounds.

X. You never mean to, but you have got me tied so tightly to your wrist.

Haesol has only ever been in the hospital twice, neither visits for himself.

Which may be one reason why he cannot stop staring at the plastic nametag snapped onto his wrist or the pristine décor of the room that is painted a sickly white. According to the nurse that delivered his five star meal – which consisted of half toasted bread and unsalted butter with a side of soggy grapes – he had been smothered by smoke from a fire. Fortunately? Fortunately, a “friendly” – but Haesol knows he was probably just being nosy – neighbor wanted to check up on him. A bit of the reptilian brain’s intuition begged he break the door down and so he did.

After he is discharged, there is a black plastic bag with a pair of chocolate ice cream cones from the convenient store hanging from his wrist. Back against the brick wall of the home he once resided in, he eats them in silence, afraid any sign of an utterance would force a well of emotions to escape from him.

But he ends up breaking down anyways.

When he returns to the apartment, he notices there are gaps in the bookshelf.

Some towels are missing from the linen closet.

The shoes on the rack are a mess.

And the pages are still tarnished, burned to a crisp though salvageable. But he doesn’t salvage them.

XI. If you ever want some trouble but can’t afford the alcohol, I’ll be there.

He doesn’t sleep for a few days, not by choice.

And he stops eating for a week, because everything he consumes tastes like ash and coffee.

He drops out because he never wanted to be a student anyways.

But he lies to his internship, because it’s really all he has right now.

And he moves out, somewhere closer to Hajeong station.

But the one thing he must promise himself is to not allow home to be anything more than a place.
