Getting organised in 2021

Huh, me? No I mean you! You!

I'm sure many people are looking ahead to 2021, and, with the new year comes renewals of goals, habits, motivation and so forth. I'm not really about that, but I thought now would be an apt time to talk about what I've learnt over the past 2 years regarding project management and keeping motivated.

Now, I want to preface this blog with my thoughts about the whole "productivity" thing. I make a huge, HUGE distinction between being productive at work and productive on your hobbies. The idea of productivity in the workplace can be used in a manipulative fashion, where one may work themselves to mental and physical exhaustion for the benefit of someone else. Considering most people reading this will probably be on a fixed wage (rather than commission-based), does it really make sense to push oneself harder without getting any immediate, tangible benefit from it?

So that’s my rant for the blog, I promise! Anyway, on the other hand we have productivity on your hobbies, which is a completely different matter. You get out exactly 100% of what you put into your hobby, and it'll benefit you in multiple ways. I don't think I need to sell this to you, as I'm sure most people, myself included, would love to be more productive on their own personal projects. In this blog, I'm going to be talking exclusively about this sort of productivity and how to improve it in a couple of different ways. Again, this is all stuff I've personally tried and tested, so while I am confident this approach will work for me, it may not necessarily work for you. But, you won't know until you try!! So if you're convinced and want to get motivated, read on!

I first want to talk about one's mindset, and then dive into the tools I use. The latter will provide a bit more context for the former, and in the end, the most powerful tool you have is your brain, so use it!

Training your brain

So, the biggest problem I find myself, and other people have, is how to tackle a project and starting a work session. One I start, I find it easy to get into the zone (and this comes back to the choice of tools that augment my workflow), so getting started and knowing what I'm doing is the main thing I have to tackle.

On the broadest level, I work with a general plan that has been written up previously. This contains all the key points from start to finish, without worrying too much about the detail at this stage. There is some skill involved in identifying what constitutes a "key" point, but this all comes down to practice. For reference, if I estimate something will take a week or two to finish, that's a task. If something will take longer than that, it's more than likely several tasks, and rolling it up into one task will probably cause some decision paralysis. Anything smaller and your list will get too clogged up, and again, decision paralysis. Right, so that's your high level plan done. Cool, but not really going to help you on a day-to-day basis as this will be something to refer to between tasks.

Ok, so now you have a list of chronological tasks. Take the first one and start it. Oh, you don't know where to start? Don't worry, I'm with you. It's important to recognise the mental signs related to approaching a task. If I find myself hesitating or not looking forward to a particular task, it often means I haven't defined it well enough. That means breaking the task down into individual steps, until you're comfortable saying "yep, I can do this right now" with each dot point. Again, it'll take some practice (depending on your hobby) to visualise and write down each step, but it is definitely something that you get used to, and will save you so much time umming and aahing with your program of choice open, but not actually getting any work done. If you are finding that happens more often than not, it breaks your workflow and you can't get into the zone!

A few more general tips. It helps to be consistent with your work. Try to dedicate a regular time to your hobby and you'll find it a lot easier to get into the working mindset and the zone. Allow yourself some days off, but don't use the excuse of "not being motivated enough" as a reason to take time off. What would be better is, if you can't force yourself to, say, program, work on the art, or the sound, or design. But do it consistently!

Be accountable as well. This means involving others as much as you can - as an example, say you want to discuss a design aspect with a friend and you'll find extra motivation to work on that aspect, and get it ready for someone else to read over. Just having that knowledge of another person looking at your work will bring it to a new level, trust me! You can also be held accountable to people you don't know! Part of the reason why I started this blog and my Twitter account was because I always have in the back of my mind while working, that it'll eventually make its way to my blog.

Finally, if your hobby has one, make use of the community where possible - get involved and see if there are ready made templates or resources you can use. I know people like to do things without help, and I absolutely respect that, but I find that people have often gone through the same struggles as you, and will provide ways to make your life easier!

Tools of the trade

Ok so I've used a lot of different software and systems in my time, and by process of natural selection the ones that I still use today are the ones that have been most helpful for me! Here's a short list with both the specific thing I use, and in brackets, what I use it for. If you already use something similar that fill a similar role, then my suggestion is to stick with what you know:

ClickUp (Project management, checklists): This is where I keep a list of all my major tasks. You can have checklists nested in checklists which is amazing for planning, and can organise things into broad categories, and tons more. Any good project management software like Trello etc. should support this.

Google Drive (Cloud storage of other assets, easy sharing, MS office replacement): I use this to store anything that isn't code related, and to work on things simultaneously with other people. While this game is a mostly solo effort, I absolutely discuss and show a ton of stuff to my more experienced friends, who in turn provide very helpful feedback. It's much nicer and more organised than sending files through a messaging app or (heaven forbid) emails!

Bitbucket (Source control, cloud storage of code): If you code, you need this. I don't care how small your project is! Actually, smaller projects are better to learn from! Github is definitely used the most for source control, so if you like that more, use it!

Google Keep (Note taking, brain dumps): Ever had a genius idea right before bed? Same, and I use Google Keep to keep track of them. I could use Clickup in this instance but I find the app to be a bit clunky compared to Keep.

Notepad++ (Rapid notes, copypasting error messages): Notepad ++ is what I use mainly for copypasting error messages to look at later, but I also use it when I need to break down a sub-task down, or make a note to do something later without interrupting my flow. The fact that Notepad++ specificaly can have multiple tabs and will save your tabs automatically without you having to manually save it is amazing.

Good 'ol pen and paper (Scratchpad): For those REALLY hard problems that can't be solved in my head, I turn to pen and paper to get my thoughts organised. While I could use something like Notepad++, I find that being able to write and draw anywhere on the paper, and link things up with lines helps immensely to get a clear idea of things.

My last session with Lynn before treatment was honestly probably the best possible session we could have had together. Lynn was so kind and it just went really well. I got there and sat down and I said that I really liked her hair because she had gotten a haircut and she was like oh thank you so much I got it cut and I was like it looks really good and she was like I always forget that I should be actually cutting my hair every so often. She said so you’re going and I said yeah and she said I talk to Peggy over the weekend and I said oh yeah? And she said yeah how are you feeling and I said well I don’t know I wouldn’t exactly say that I’m living the dream right now. She asked how I’ve been handling things with work and we talked about how hard it’s been leaving everyone but that ultimately I need to take care of myself and it’s OK and it’s going to be OK and we talked about two in particular that would be harder but it’s going to be Ok. I mention my parents coming this weekend and she asked when they would be here and I explained when and we talked about how that was going to go and I said essentially that I can go a couple different ways and I’m not really sure but I don’t really see any of them being super positive and I’m hoping to tell them that night before they leave and she was like honestly is it possible they’re going to comment on your weight loss though and I was like it’s certainly possible but I don’t know because there have been times when I’ve lost weight before and they’ve just sort of always ignored it and so it’s hard to know how they will actually react. I told her about how hard things have been for my husband and how it’s been really sad and difficult because this all really affects him and she said she strongly recommends that when we get back we do couples therapy and of course she would love it if my husband did his own therapy to work through his trauma and I was like I mean hopefully with family therapy at treatment he will have a positive experience and be more likely to do that work and I said I might be able to get him to do some of it by suggesting that he do trauma therapy to work through the memories of me being sick because he definitely will acknowledge that this has been traumatizing for him. We talked about the after treatment plan and she said that she would see me and she was like what are your thoughts on all of that and she was like because will you be calling me to schedule after and I was like as long as you are still willing to see me and she was like of course absolutely I want to see you and I was like wow I didn’t know and she was like I already talk to Peggy and I’m not sure what Peggy you think about all this because you know I want to make sure that you are definitely getting the right care that you need and then I started talking really fast and I was like I mean I’ll do whatever I have to do but I just don’t think it would be really helpful to have to get out of treatment and then try to start over with a new therapist while adjusting to normal life again as a post to coming back and seeing her when I know that I feel really comfortable and safe with her and I mean if there’s behaviors then obviously I see her point but what if there’s not any behaviors then there’s not really a need that seems sort of therapist because the only reason that you need to see meetings or Therapist’s because they’re going to make sure that they areI mean if there’s behaviors then obviously I see her point but what if there’s not any behaviors then there’s not really a need to have seen any sort of therapist because the only reason that you need to see an eating disorderor therapist is because they’re going to make sure that they are Making sure you aren’t using behaviors and if I’m not using babies and I don’t really need to be seeing one and literally it would be the equivalent of if you ask me every week am I following my meal plan but realistically Peggy would be continuing to wake me so she would know if I started to get off track and you and I both know that I’m always honest I’m not gonna lie and try to hide behaviors from anybody so if it wasn’t an issue then fine I’ll go see somebody and Lynn totally cut me off and was like breathe. She said she wanted me to ask the treatment center about EMDR for eds and I said honestly there’s just not a whole lot of research done with it at this point and last year at the conference the main thing was essentially that they were looking at using future template planning for fear foods and using regular processing to deal with food related bad memories or bad body image related memories which is essentially what I end up doing for people once they’re stable and she was like I was thinking more in terms of attachment issues because we both know that that’s a big component of all of this. I told Lynn that it was like honestly my biggest fear that she wasn’t going to work with me anymore after I got out of treatment and she looked confused but I was like well because Peggy acted like it was super adamant that I had to work with and eating disorder therapist and I was like maybe she didn’t really say that to you because maybe she thought about it because I literally had sat there in her office crying the whole time she talked about it. Lynn kind of laughed and was like OK well that’s not how this is going to go. I was like OK thanks. I was like speaking of attachment that I tell you about talking to Dixie.? She said no and so I told her about how it went when I told Dixie and how I had realized that there wasn’t going to ever be this moment of corrective experience that would really fix the damage that my parents had done and that essentially like it’s up to me to fix myself and I have to be the one to do it. She said she thought that was huge and such good insight for me to have and with going to treatment she was like that’s really great for you to have recognize that because that might help you to really move on from some of this and I was like yeah because I don’t feel like I’m going to keep hanging onto this moment of wanting somebody else to sort of save me and you know I think if there was ever a moment when that should’ve happened that would’ve been it because Dixie really did handle it perfectly and if that didn’t fix it then there’s not going to be that moment so I just have to fix myself. She started talking about I gaze with EMDR And that there are some training on it and to look into it but basically where you hold like prolonged I contact and she was like I feel like we are both pretty comfortable with each other and I would do it with you and it has to do with healing attachment injuries with the trauma treatment and I was like that’s really interesting and I could see that and I explained about how I contact helps prevent suicide as well. She said she thought that was really interesting but definitely made sense and aligned with what she had learned in the training. She said we have to work through that attachment stuff because it’s keeping me sick and I agreed. I said that I just wish that regarding all of that stuff that like mattering to people with something that stuck because even like with telling people that I’m going to treatment and I told her about how I told Juliana and how she had cried and howling with Dixie crying words like I’ve had several of these moments where I tell somebody and there’s no way that I can logically bullshit and excuses for them thinking that they care about me like there’s no arguing that they genuinely care about me but it’s like that never sticks and I’m always so dumbfounded by those moments where Chris is like why are you surprised that people care and that you matter to them and I’m like I don’t know but it’s always surprising to me and Lynn was like it’s because that earlier attachment system was broken from a young age and it’s OK we’re going to work on that and fix it. We also randomly talked about insurance reimbursement for work and she told me to get on arenas panel because they. Reimburse well and are easy to work with. We talked about how an insurance company raised their fee and I can bill sixty minutes, which is nice because no one ever just doesna 45 minute session. She said they’ve already talked and will schedule for after and left the treatment center initially handle that. We talked about actually going and having a release of info on file. She joked about being disorganized and not able to find it and was like hm primary care doctor, I was like Lynn just cross out pcp and use that and she had that moment of oh duh and did that. I joked about not suing her if she didn’t have one but I totally understood the anxiety. She said she always had a lot of anxiety about the legal stuff so we filled it out and I paid her for my session. When I got up to leave she opened her arms for a hug and she told me that she was so proud of me and then I could do this and to work hard and that she loved me. She said I would get through this and that she would be here when I’m back.

Finding Your Creative Path with S A D É

“My interest in craft and wearable object is innate and learned. I’ve always been a creative and tactile person, which led to a natural attraction to craft and the creative modalities that allow you to engage with touch. Being sort of an only child for a while, and having to figure out new ways to entertain myself, crafting in its varied forms allowed me to create a world for myself.,” Sadé says.

But it wasn’t until later, after she’d been exposed to the process, that jewelry became her main interest.

“Minus a short-lived enchantment with an EZ-2-Do bakeable jewelry oven, my interest in jewelry didn’t really evolve until I was a teenager, specifically when I took my first jewelry class at FIT when I was 14 or 15 years old. It was there that I really fell in love with jewelry making. The ability to manipulate materials, especially metals, was thrilling. When I was on the bench, me and machine were one and the same; I was an extension of them and they were an extension of me. It was a welcomed awakening and my creative abilities felt limitless. I started to truly understand the power and impact that jewelry can have, not only on the maker but on the wearer as well.”

At the moment, Sadé describes her business as an expensive professional side hustle that will hopefully one day turn into her career. Easy to relate to, right? Still, there was no doubt a moment when it hit her that her designs were something special.

Sadé says, “I first came to the realization that I was onto something with my designs when I was a teenager – but luck had a lot to do with it. When I was 15, I found myself in a very fortuitous situation which led to Nelly Furtado wearing some plastic bracelets I made on TV and in her ‘Turn Off the Light’ music video. A few years later luck also led to Sia (yes, ‘Chandelier’ Sia) wearing one of my barrettes in a campaign for one of her early albums.”

Those moments of luck didn’t have the inspiring impact you might expect, and for several years, Sadé didn’t really think of jewelry design as something that she could do professionally. It was a hobby she enjoyed, but any interest by others was – and still is – an addition bonus. There have also been the doubts that so many creatives experience in their craft.

“Over the years, and for a number of reasons, my confidence in my creative abilities did waver. I’m not traditionally trained, I took a few classes here and there, but otherwise part of my practice was just figuring things out. I always thought in order to be taken seriously I would need credentials and the right education. I think these thoughts were excuses I made to mask my fears and to block myself from my own success. I would still make things and try to sell them every now and then, but I would never call myself a designer. I had seen what professional jewelry designers could do, and what I made at the time didn’t look like what they were making. Imposter syndrome was very alive within me. So I went further into that spiral of self-doubt, and instead of sharing my work, I found myself spending almost ten years promoting the creative efforts of others, neglecting my own.”

Being surrounded by a solid community and support system can go a long way, and Sadé learned just how much they’re to be valued recently.

She says, “Last year, through a lot of nudging and some sort of cosmic alignment, I got over myself and my insecurities. Luckily, I am part of a multifarious swarm of creatives that really supported me before, during, and after I launched my brand. It was through their support that I found a lot of strength in re-committing myself to my art, and believing in what I produce. I’ve definitely met my fair share of challenges since I launched, but I’m still learning and growing.”

We’re forever curious where creatives find inspiration for their work, along with what they might describe their aesthetic as – so we asked Sadé.

“Each piece has its own story, and thus its own source of inspiration. Sometimes I feel inspired by the wild women – real and imagined – that came before me, sometimes art and cultural references, and sometimes ideas just come out of the blue. Whatever the source of inspiration, it’s always intertwined with outward expressions of my thoughts, needs, neurosises, and/or process.,” she said.

An example is Medusa. “A couple of years ago, after a bit of heartache and a lot of confusion around the concept of ‘dating’ (which honestly still baffles me), I had the idea to turn myself into an object and put a value on my likeness. While it’s was somewhat inspired by Bernini’s ‘Medusa’ and Medusa’s story (fun fact: I’m a Greek Mythology nerd), it’s more of an examination of self-identity, race and racial politics in art, ownership of the gaze, and my questions around desirability.”

Sadé went on to say, “As far as its aesthetic goes, everything I design is meant to be impactful and transcend trend. My pieces are intentionally not precious. It’s quietly maximalist but also voluminous, strong as the hammering of a gavel, with the same rousing emphasis of the exclamation point at the end of a declaration. They’re also malleable, each piece easily adapts to the personal style of the wearer, with the intent of making them feel emboldened and powerful.”

Being a jewelry designer, there’s no way we couldn’t ask Sadé about the pieces she wears daily – what they are, who they’re by, and what they mean to her:

“There are actually quite a few pieces I wear everyday. They’re more or less items that mark significant moments in my life and/or act as a form of armor offering protection or guidance.

On my right forefinger, I wear a wedding band from Tiffany & Co. It was a gift intentionally repurposed into a undergraduate graduation ring with ‘NYU 07’ engraved on the inside (thanks Mom!).

I also wear a red acrylic Tatty Devine nameplate gifted to me by my old flatmates/friends Micha and Eneka. They gave me the necklace right before I moved back to New York from London in 2009. It’s now attached to a gold figaro chain my godmother gave me when I was 21 and I wear it as a declaration of personhood and as a testament to friendship.

On my right arm I wear a few woven bracelets that I’ve collected since 2015 – coincidentally shortly after my Saturn’s return ended. My favorites are two string bracelets that have beads from jewelry once worn by the spiritual guru, Amma.

I wear a talisman I made composed of charms of a few of my celestial guides, a piece of garnet (a great gemstone for small business success, amongst others), and a ‘S’ charm given to me by a college friend 12 years ago.

On my left forefinger I usually wear one or two of the first Helios rings I made. No deep meaning other than the fact that I originally made them because I thought I needed new jewelry for a work trip to London. (I am very much that person.)

As of a few of months ago, I started wearing a mood ring I designed, and will hopefully start selling soon. I love mood rings and as corny as it sounds, I designed this one to give me a sense of invincibility. It conjures up feelings of power, protection, and confidence when I wear it; all of which are feelings that I hope my jewelry gives to their respective wearers.

I recently added a gold pinky ring with a small yellow sapphire into the mix. I named it ‘St. Anthony’ because while I was making it out of wax, I lost the sapphire for three days and it didn’t re-appear until I started reciting the St. Anthony rhyme (Dear St. Anthony please come around, something is lost and it cannot be found). When it comes down to it, a business is a business – whether it’s a side hustle or a full-blown career – and it takes a lot to make one run. Sometimes that means pulling in extra help to make it function smoother, like Squarespace. S A D É uses their platform to save time on sales and administration.

Keeping Up With Content Creation: A Dad’s Workflow

We love collaborating with bloggers and today we’re pleased to be able to share this guest post with you from Ivan Siladji. Ivan’s a dad and a blogger and he’s sharing his tips for keeping up with content creation. Enjoy!

Let’s be real for just a minute. For most of us, this whole blogging thing is a part time gig. Some people never want to take their writing full-time, you know, the making a living from it kind of full time. For many, blogging is a way to journal their life – and it’s a great way of doing that. Kudos.

For others, myself taken, the blogging journey we are all on is one that will one day provide for financially, and then some.

The bridge between hobby content creation, being part time and then ultimately full time is a long journey that best be enjoyed with long nights, sore typing thumbs and a glass of wine. It all gets interesting when you couple all of this with a full-time job, being a dad to two kids under six, married life, family life, taking time for health and all the other things this wonderful thing called life may throw at you.

Content Creation – Why Create?

Legacy. That’s it for me. For you that might be different, and probably will. My mission is to interact with as many people as I can while I’m here and in some way, shape or form, leave a lasting impact, big or small, trivial or profound. Content creation and the internet is the easiest and most direct way of doing that. It’s also the most competitive. And if I can support my lifestyle while doing all of this it just seems like a no-brainer. Of course, there is always a catch. I’ll give you a hint – it starts with “W”.

So Where Do You Fit In?

My perspective starts with me standing all alone, on that bridge, this little guy from the big city of Sydney, Australia — long way from home, I know. I’m currently walking that line between hobby content creator and part time blogger. Sure, I hope to take this thing full time but the biggest thing I’ve learned in the last four years would have to be patience.

I currently create content around three main pillars – written in the form of my blog or other articles, such as this that you’re reading now. Second is video content and that’s where my YouTube channel comes in. There I document my journey and life in the form of vlogging and create other short form videos for my community. Then there is the third pillar – the audio component. Think of podcasting for example. In my case, this is my anchor station where I aim to put out daily “plogging” content – think of vlogging or blogging but in podcast form. Then there is the plethora of micro content that strings all of this together – Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. All of which in their own right are quickly becoming, if not already, pillar content platforms.

I took the route of these three main pillars because they integrate well. I can write a piece of content in blog form and then speak about it in audio form, opening up further conversation and bringing to life the voice behind the written post, and vice versa. YouTube vlogging allows me to take my community along for the journey and pull together a video that visually tells the story I am trying to convey in otherwise written form. And in all honestly, humans are very visual creatures. Personally, I’m always painting the picture in my mind of what a writer looks like behind a post – video is perfect to share what that looks like with your own community, especially if you’re comfortable to do that sort of thing.

How Do You Keep Up?

Before you think about how you are going to go about all of this it’s important to accept the fact that it will involve a great deal of work, which, if you’re passionate about all of this content creation stuff, shouldn’t be a problem, most of the time. If you don’t have kids you’re ahead of the game for time as evening, night and early morning hours are still your own. If kids have somehow made their way into your lives you’re in for a journey of time management. Don’t worry, it can be done, you just have to manage a few extra things.

Now that you’ve accepted the fact that work will be involved, it’s important that you get clear about what it is you are trying to do. Get clear about the pillar content forms you want to pursue. Don’t focus so much on the social platform or you will be hedging your content on the success of the platform and any algorithms they throw your way. Rather, focus on the content types. For instance, when I say I vlog for YouTube I also have these vlogs as video posts on my public Facebook page – Facebook is really upping their attention on video content so engagement for that type of content is usually higher and Facebook gives it some preference in their feeds.

From here it’s all about when. This is where the ‘keeping up’ part comes into play. I’ll make it easy for you from the get-go. You won’t always keep up. Accept that. As you make progress and get better at your craft you inherently get busier. Opportunities come more often which means you’re writing more frequently than you otherwise anticipated and with that comes an increase in your content distribution efforts. You spend more time engaging with your readers, viewers and/or listeners and building a community — personally, that’s the best part and it’s a lot of fun.

Tools Of The Trade

Like any job, you need specific tools to get you through specific tasks. Personally, I use a number of tools to make the process of content creation all that bit easier. These include (and are free without taking any upgrade options);

Evernote – I use Evernote to create written content for platforms outside of my own blog, for example, contributor pieces. If I’m writing directly for my own blog I write directly within WordPress, my sites hosting platform. The text editor there is more than ample for how I like to write so I keep within that. However, when it comes to writing for someone else, jotting down notes or getting an audio note in, especially while out-and-about, I don’t go past Evernote.

Pages – I manage my facebook page through the native pages app by Facebook. It gives better reporting and power over your page. I’ve used this for years so I’m not sure if it’s normal practice now but if it’s not and you’re still managing your page within Facebook itself, try the pages app.

Canva – I’ve recently signed up with Canva (oh Canva, where have tho’ been). In a nutshell, Canva makes creating anything visual so much easier. They have all the templates you need for all the major platforms. I use this via google chrome as an in browser app as well as on my iPhone when not at my desktop.

Asana – Need a task and project management tool? Asana is your new best friend. This cloud based app on desktop and mobile is powerful, visually appealing and makes setting up tasks and projects much easier. After you play around with this app and get your bearings around it you’ll never look back. You can organise your tasks by project and assign sub-tasks. And if you have a team it gets even better as you can assign tasks to your team and open workflows between members.

Bit.ly – Bit.ly is my go-to link shortening app. I like this as it allows me to track click throughs from social platforms and other parts of the interweb so I know in more detail who is getting exposed to my content and from where.

WordPress – I natively create most of my blog content within the mobile version of WordPress. Because most content today is consumed within a mobile device I figured it made sense to create the content within one. This allows me to see what my posts will look like on mobile which gives me a chance to iron out most blogging layout bugs before I hit publish.

iPhone / DSLR / External Microphone / Tripod – I’m an Apple guy but if you’re an Android user all of what I’ve written here will still work. I record 95% of my video content on my iPhone and subsequently do 80% of my video editing within the device as well. Sometimes I go to desktop but it’s usually much easier and quicker to do it right from my device. Point is – you don’t need to get fancy. Although I use Adobe software for higher end video and photography work, apple iMovie is more than capable of getting you started. I also carry in my kit a DSLR (although I’m using it much less these days), an external microphone for audio content such as that which I put out on Anchor when I’m in the office as well as a tripod to hold my iPhone or DSLR when shooting video. Take home message is you can do most of your content creation using nothing else than your smartphone and any excuse otherwise is exactly that – an excuse.

I’m Still Hearing You In The Background…

I’m well aware some of you are still saying – good for you but I just don’t have the time. Respect. I get it. But I don’t buy it from most of you. I truly would love to see you win at this. Even before I do. The journey is long, so engage in a little patience, sprinkle on some consistency (the hardest part) and take small steps to climb big mountains. Utilise tivo to record your favourite show for later or skip it all together. If you’re naturally a night person – go to bed an hour or two later. Morning person? Wake up an hour or two earlier. Catching a train? Write a post. Waiting in queue for a latte? Engage on Twitter. Taking an Uber? Record a podcast. Out and about? Record a vlog. It just comes down to work.

Given this post threw a lot at you, I truly hope it’s given you a little more edge. I love creating content, particularly that in written form. Being part of an online community has introduced me to more people than I ever thought I’d get to know and it’s been a hell-of-a journey. Evaluation

When I first got this project, I immediately wanted to do a fashion editorial. I felt that doing something like this would push and challenge me more in how I organise a shoot and how I manage a larger team on my own. I’m also quite interested in fashion photography and want to do as many shoots as I can with the studio access that I have, and editorial is definitely something I’ve never touched so I thought again it would be a really good challenge for me to see if I like it, if I can follow what the client wants and if I can keep up with the demand of it all.

The estimates sheet was a lot easier to do this time round as i had something to go off of in terms of a studio with really prices, so was able to utilise this. i was also able to find more answers for this one as it is focused on editorial specifically, so i was able to get better, and more concise prices for models, hair and makeup artists, fashion stylist ect.

Finding the models was really simple. I had a lot of responses from my casting, making it harder to narrow it down. After being advised to have more than one model, choosing multiple girls for the shoot became that much easier.

Booking equipment was a bit of a mess, but only with one light in particular. Luckily it was sorted out by our tutor who provided us with the light Chloe and I needed.

Finding an MUA was really easy as I knew a few from previous projects i’ve done, and so I contacted 1 directly and she said she was available. Unfortunately, about 5 days before the shoot, she told me she wasn’t able to make the shoot because of university commitments, but had already organised another MUA to come and help on my shoot! All before she even spoke to me!

My largest issue was finding a stylist. It was so incredibly difficult to actually find one, and then also KEEP them on and wanted to do the job. I had a few responses from stylists interested in the job, but once hearing more about it, their excuses and reasons came quite fast. Ones where they just weren’t available on the day are fine because you can’t help when you’re busy or working or have other commitments. It’s the ones where they would say things like ‘oh I can’t afford to buy the clothes new/myself from my own pocket’ or ‘It’s not my style or something I’m interested in’ or ‘I don’t want it in my portfolio/it won’t fit into my portfolio, I want something more creative’ or suddenly say ‘I don’t do unpaid jobs’! From what i had heard, stylists are the ones that will source clothes for you entirely using if not one then multiple methods that works for them. Some will buy the clothes and then return them, some will know of places to hire them, and some even make deals with brands and stores that then allows them to take the clothes and the store or brand will ALSO get something in exchange for their collaboration! Unless all of that was a lie! Or none of these people have ever styled before in their lives then I still don’t know what a stylist is meant to do when it comes to clothes! As for them not liking the style or it not being creative enough, it’s not like I didn’t have a moodboard there as a reference. All the clothes on the moodboard are a very certain and specific style. The styled images I chose showed NOTHING of there being a chance of being fun, flashy, youthful and creative. And if that wasn’t clear enough, I had put info about the shoot, it’s needs, its audience and it’s age-range so ALL info was there for them to decide if they wanted to do it or not. For me to then waste my time basically repeating all the information that was in the original casting for them to then suddenly not like the shoot concept was just annoying and baffling. And again, this also goes with the unpaid part. I specifically make sure i put UNPAID in capitals so you’re aware that it is. It appears that no one really reads whats in the casting so I always have to re-iterate that it is unpaid and make sure they’re fine with that before i move on to explaining the shoot more.

The stylists that DID do the things I was told about to get clothes, were all busy or didn’t reply to me once we had started the ball rolling. Jasmine was my only hope, but i STILL ended up buying the clothes myself, and styling it myself using some extra clothes she had dropped off for me to use in the shoot.

That part was hard to do at the same time as organising everyone. I had to make sure my camera and laptop were being setup. I had to make sure all the clothes were unpacked and hung up. i had to go and track down the steamer, right at the end of Chloe’s shoot as she was just finishing up with her team and signing them out. I had to give instructions and answer questions, and I had to ask Chloe to do a lot! I really didn’t want to, as she was there to assist mainly in the picture area but she was just a BIG help with being my digi op AND being a stylist! It was really great!

The original plan was to have all types of collaborators on a fashion shoot that you could have, so I had a full team and it moved smoothly, but not having a stylist just meant Chloe had more to do. She didn’t mind though which was great, and we both learnt how to use a clothes steamer!

The actual shoot went really well though. Even though I had to move around a lot more (which was fine, I had to get the job done), it still worked out great. Chloe got on with ALL the new job roles she aquired that day with the clothes and styling/dressing the girls for me, and also digi-oping for me, back and forth! It was a lot of work but great!

One downside was that one of my models pretty much ruined one of my outfits. Her face, body language and attitude was just to visible for me to not notice. I tried to direct her more, telling her to look here, stand like this and such, but she still wasn’t giving me anything to work with. I later found out, from her, that she didn’t like the dress she was put in and didn’t feel it was her, but rather preferred the second one she was in. And that was VERY evident when it came to the second round of pictures. Even though I only needed 5 outfits to fit all the different spaces in the template, I planned for 6 outfits to have a spare to choose from. It could have very well been the only thing to feature in the detailed shots spaces - I should have made that small detailed shots of one outfit and shown the other 5 in full. So that annoyed me.

I still got some good shots of the other 2 models, and even the model that only perked up and got into in when she was in a dress SHE was happy with.

Overall, I think i handled it all well, and I had a really good team. Everyone was enthusiastic, talking and got on well. Chloe was a great assistant and helped me so much. I would definitely work with her again. 1 model may not be worked with again if she’s not going to have a positive attitude.
