Kousuke is that one character who is guaranteed to make my blood pressure rise. I have no idea why this is the case, but it's a testament to Quimchee's writing for sure.

How Kousuke proceeds from here on out is something I am looking forward to. I don't think he will suddenly be different or even make a drastic change in his life, but I hope these events ultimately lead him in the right direction. I also would like consequences for his actions.

Rand's appearance that night is something that's been eating me up. Many people are rightfully scared that any positive progress for Kou is lost, especially given how unhinged he was throughout the night.

For the reader, Rand's response makes sense; one of his sons is out there bleeding to death, but in Kousuke's fractured state of mind that might have been an indicator of preference between them.

After all, the two times he has seen his father show a different kind of expression are tied to Nol (so far)—the night he was taken away and now. Despite how harshly Rand's treated Nol, he has seen his father show a vulnerability that he doesn't see for anyone else, not even him (and he was supposedly hurt both times, too.)

Rand has to be an idiot to not take this situation seriously.

At this point, he has 1 drunken voice mail from Kousuke + a phone confession that Nol was a painful reminder Kosuke's life was not perfect. These are monumental things for the son who acted like everything was fine and went with the flow without complaints.

It's worrisome enough that Rand personally came to deliver his clothes and "check up on him."

Will Kousuke remember this? Will it make sense to him? Maybe. Maybe not. After all, he was concerned that his father would leave him there and not take him with to the hospital with Nol.

That night Rand had been uncharacteristically sentimental on the outside, actually. He even tried talking to Nol before things went to hell for them all.

Yui claimed Rand was "plotting something" at the Christmas party, but what was it? And how do the events that followed change what he's been planning?

[I'm not touching on the theory of Rand not being Kousuke's father because that changes nothing; even if he were not his biological son he took on the responsibility of raising him and failed.]

I do think Kousuke's change is inevitable at this point. He has fully fractured and Quimchee drew the cracks very deliberately.

It's very symbolic with his whole dilemma.

He is a person torn between who he feels he needs to be and the person he might want to be underneath it all. He is also living two realities; his mother's worldview and the actual world.

I want to believe he will head in a positive direction, but he might not so do right away, which could disappoint many readers. There is too much for him to overcome and the biggest obstacle is Yui.

She has created the world he's in—his sense of self—and steered his goals to the point where he couldn't accept what was actually real. He has been under her control since childhood. Even the image he has of Rand was shaped by her (which is why Nol's existence was a burden to him; it contradicted everything he knew.)

Yui will not let him go.

He is her most priceless and precious pawn. He is a way to rid herself of Rand and bring the family's legacy back into their hands. If we dig into the whole heir/power struggle and the mukoyoshi + the bits of Yui being partially inspired by Cersei, we have a lot of drama here.

Kousuke becoming heir is how Yui gets everything back.

[And it explains why she's looking for a malleable wife for Kousuke; she might even want someone without fortune to prevent interests from being invested away from the Hirahara's, unless she can find an heiress whose business they can absorb... etc... I mean we can go on for days speculating Yui's motivations lmao!]

The difference between Kousuke and his mother is precisely what always gave me hope for his character despite his antagonistic traits and the bad things he has done.

Kousuke struggles relating to others because he's never had to do that. He's never had to accommodate anyone. Everything has been catered to him.

He also doesn't know how to behave around people that aren't within his socioeconomic status, but we've seen him attempting an effort to do so even though he comes off as rude.

Hansuke told him that he tried to help out the nurses at work after seeing them struggle—an endeavor Kousuke finds a waste of energy. He's never had to do that. Why bother? Work is work. Everyone has to do their part; work isn't a place for comfort, after all.

Hansuke tells him that sometimes encouragement is more effective than critique, and Kousuke doesn't get that either. You wouldn't face criticism if you do what you're supposed to—if you obey. Why can't others do that? He does it just fine.

Despite this, he tried to "encourage" Shin Ae, something that again, he never offered Nol, but it came out condescending.

"People like you need this."

And he doesn't understand why his effort is met with hostility and scorn. He doesn't see a problem with his words or approach, doesn't understand that it is probably this what makes it so that people don't approach him for reasons other than his name, status, what benefit they can get or their obligations to him.

He's just not personable.

He is actually quite an asshole.

And no amount of etiquette and good manners took that out of him.

[Which reminds me of the whole blurred speech/texts about him not being a gentleman—how it's a front, etc.]

But yeah, Kousuke has a lot of issues to work through.

And for once, I want him to face consequences for his actions.

I want mommy to not be able to shield him.

I am not insensitive to his plight and emotional ordeal but I want him to face consequences too. For once, he should not be shielded by his name/money. Perhaps karma will come in some other form beyond judicial. We'll just have to see.

It's funny how the people I want to see consequences for are Alyssa and Kousuke—the characters who have similarities between them and have wronged Shin Ae and Nol.

The chess theory implies that Kousuke will switch sides eventually, but will he do so willingly or because he won't have another choice?

"How long until you stop pretending that everything that has happened to you in the past has been resolved? Walking away from a problem doesn't fix anything. They'll either stay in the same place or they'll follow you, but they won't disappear."

These words from the latest chapter is like a smack in the face. This certainly pushed me to re-read earlier episodes with new context. It makes me reconsider a lot of Nol's behavior, like, maybe Nol's guilt towards Shinae has started long before the formal. What I mean is, the party incident might be the last nail in the coffin, but Nol's low self-worth for her might have started long before that. And as usual, his feeling for Shinae always connects with Kousuke. This is what I mean when I said I couldn't separate Nol, Shinae, and Kousuke before, so I guess I'll just go with it.

⚠️This is not a meta. I'm just dumping my interpretation of the episodes that catches me. I might as well call it "Nolan's POV" since I couldn't get better words to call this post.

1. Episode 22-23

This is probably the start of it all. Nol wanted to escape the school life full of fake people, but he ended up troubling his friends. Nol only taunted Shinae so he could've had fun with her, but she passed out as the result. He knew she was pushing herself, he never thought she would push this hard just to get the food he jokingly bet on. Was his quick reaction really just his nature to be quick on his feet, or did he get reminded of his traumatic past? It's convenient we couldn't see Nol's perspective after Shinae fell, even though Quim already elaborated Nol's observation and his fast response to the fall. Nol's feeling is very telling in the next episode though; he feels so bad, he sacrificed his freedom just so Kousuke could get her some food. He also genuinely thanked him for it. At first I was as confused as Kousuke were (Nol's at disadvantage here, why is he thanking him?), but now, I just realized how much Nol is feeling guilty for her.

2. Episode 25-33

Last night still affected Nol: Even though he's uncomfortable to be alone with Kousuke, he didn't ask Shinae to accompany him anymore, unlike last time. He didn't want to bother her; hence the hostility he showed Kousuke when he asked her to join them (maybe I should return to this later, it's probably way more than that since he distrusts Kou so much). But the way Shinae lighten up the situation, even with Kousuke around, gave him a little hope that maybe, working with the Hirahara won't be so bad anymore if he's with her.

On the other hand, Kousuke is being oddly nice. He returned him to his nana's house, agreed to not immediately jumped on to Yui's health facility, agreed to eat a burger with hands despite his extreme discomfort, and took the trouble to buy him food personally. Kousuke has been trying to treat him nicer, so those little actions gave him a little hope that maybe, Kousuke has changed. Shinae's application resonated with his feeling and motivated him to make his family accepted him once more. He has been avoiding any Hirahara affairs due to his trauma but this time, maybe he'd like to give it a shot.

Shinae has accepted his friendship offer. She is going to work with him, which means he can breathe a little easier. Kousuke also treated him differently than all those years. If he keeps being useful to the family, maybe things will finally change right?

3. Episode 43-45

This is probably where Nol realized Shinae is desperate for money. She already told her condition in the burger place, she tutored his friends, she asked him about Yui, she applied at his company, and now already worked at Wac even before she heard the news. (Remember, he has good memory). He tried to help his friend who's struggling to keep her facade, but despite his effort with best intention in mind, Shinae berated him how he makes her uncomfortable when he already has a gf so he should know his place.

First Kousuke is sending him home early again, now Shinae. Nol is probably reminded once again that his sincerity is always misinterpreted by other people. It's like he's unneeded. But still, he knew Shinae has a point. He isn't aware how a man with a girlfriend supposed to act, because he couldn't even reach his "girlfriend." He realized he may be desperate for some sort of connection with someone. He shouldn't be selfish. Shinae's words hurts him so he decided to back off for now.

🚩 : Feeling misunderstood, feeling unneeded.

And then, he checked Shinae's application.

Nol found out Kousuke is using Shinae's application to make him work. He is pissed for trusting Kousuke has changed, yet he felt he should've known better that his friends would dragged to his family's affairs. He's extremely disappointed in Kousuke -though it's not something new, yet, he couldn't blame him after listening to his reason. But still. This is the first time after a while that Nol genuinely wanted to try again with his family. Nol knew Kousuke would never appreciate him no matter what he's doing but, was he wrong for hoping otherwise? Nol is crushed. He failed to win Kousuke's trust despite trying his best, he made Shinae uncomfortable by his friendship, he lead her on with a false hope, only to find out she couldn't get a decent job because of him. Forget about making new connections, people will eventually suffer because of him. It's like the world is telling him "Stop trying." He's exhausted.

🚩: Disappointment, hopelessness, self-blame.

And then, Shinae came, asking him if he's okay.

Her previous words might be the least worry in his mind (because he knew she has a point), yet she still apologized for it. Even though he's the one who constantly forced his way onto her, she said she appreciated him. The fact that she told him what he could improve means she gave him a second chance; she trusted him. This is huge coming from a person who has trust issues, and also huge for the person who's used at being rejected. Nol is conflicted, he didn't know if he should accept her trust when he's the one who make her life more difficult without her knowing it. To him, Shinae is kind; he didn't deserve it. He's glad Shinae didn't cut him off, but at the same time, his guilt prevented him from truly accepting her. He's probably feel bummed too that he couldn't do more for her (this part I think, plays a huge role in episode 93; he learned to be persistent with his ways without making the other party uncomfortable --the taco scene). Shinae's kindness to him despite her own problems (working part-time, problem with her dad) made him determined to be better for her sake.

🚩 : Guilt, facade.

4. Episode 47

Kousuke and Nol's disagreement from the night before didn't stop Nol from trying. He still wanted to work to prove himself. And yet, he was fired without any good reason, without him knowing. Even after he came all the way to continue working, Kousuke still rejected him, so his bitterness towards him hasn't disappeared yet.

🚩 : Desperation.

5. Episode 49-53

That night, Nol had to attend a party he didn't like. His father reprimanded him as usual, and he found out that apparently, he quitted work because of a friend -which is false, but he couldn't find himself to refute. His father didn't let him explain and instead, ordered him to wait for Alyssa --it's as if he's never worth anything more than an idol's boyfriend. He's forced to break his promise to Shinae (keeping her food), even though he's already determined to make her feel better. Kousuke's irritating false concern didn't help. Yui opened his trauma again by touching his face and serving him tea. To make things worse, his supposed-to-be-girlfriend greeted him half-assedly, even though they haven't met for a long time. She has gone completely to the Hirahara's side.

🚩: Abuse, isolation.

6. Episode 55

The night constantly told him to "Give up." He only got Shinae by his side, but he couldn't lean on her. Not only because she already had enough shit to handle, but he also didn't want to drag her to his problem more than he already has. Besides, Shinae has been too good by staying as his friend even though he has been a burden to her (forcing his friendship, not respecting her boundaries, ruining her chance) so he couldn't ask for more.

🚩 : Low self-worth.

Nol tried to be a better friend for Shinae. He tried to make her comfortable with whatever means: respecting her boundary, comforting her with make-up and food, cheering her up during her dance, and giving back her jacket. Seeing her first smile of the night eased his guilt a little bit; maybe feeling a little bittersweet that he can only be useful when he's supporting from the sidelines. Still though, it's not like it makes him feel okay. He tried to be strong, but he couldn't really do it given how shitty he felt because of his family and his girlfriend. His mask cracked. Friendship is supposed to be two-ways right? He needs some sort of consolation that he's not really alone.

He didn't want to lose her. Remember that he's good at tying things up together. The fact that Shinae is here, in Kim's private party, means she got involved with Kousuke or Yui. She stubbornly stayed despite her great discomfort means she owed them something -probably money-related. When he came back, he found her dancing with Kousuke. He just knew his family would target his friend to control him. It's similar with Alyssa's case, how she's swayed by Hirahara's offer and then left his side. In his suffocating life, he's afraid Shinae would do the same. But. Who is he to stop her from doing what she wants? If anything, the Hiraharas probably helped her more than he ever could, just like Alyssa. He should've supported her as her friend. In the end he didn't want to worry her so he stopped.

🚩 : Fear of abandonment.

TLDR; I honestly don't know what to make from this post. I guess I just want to vent what I thought was Nol's pain and how much I'm hurting after re-reading the old episodes with the new perspective. Like, the string of events really leads you to an unavoidable crash in episode 65. The way Shinae is angry for his sake --even though she doesn't have to, even apologizing for snapping even though it's not her fault, is just heartbreaking for him (and me too). It really cemented his believe that he's pathetic (useless), a complete waste of time, and she should find someone better.

Aside from that, episode 23, 44 and 55 blow me away. I never realized how much guilt Nol carry for Shinae, I never thought Nol's disappointment towards Kousuke would be this deep, and I thought Nol was simply jealous of Kousuke when he danced with Shinae, when in fact, he's been sending Shinae SOS the whole time. Quimchee's story-telling ability is just superb.

This is just how I read him now. Maybe there's other interpretation? What do you think?

Nolan Patrick - Christmas

A/N: HI! So idk what made me write this and I kind of just couldn’t not write it the more it thought about it. It’s my first imagine though so please be nice - also if you have any comments about it - Let me know cause I think I’ll write more of these (: thanks! - h (*also sorry about the cheesy ending - it’s Christmas and im feeling super cheesy)

Summary: Who ever decided that Christmas is “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” was obviously is out to spite you. Wonderful, my ass. Between the constant pressure of finding everyone the right gifts on a tight budget and not knowing which family member you’re going to see next it is safe to say that the only thing you’re looking forward to on Christmas is crawling into your bed after wining and dining with family you haven’t seen all year and probably wont see for another 364 days. I guess it’s a good thing you have Nolan by your side.

Christmas is supposed to be about spending time with family and friends - but when your family gets you so wound up you can barely think straight, all you can be thankful for is the rest of the year when you don’t have to put up a happy facade and tell everyone about your plans for the future or why there isn’t a special someone in your life. So when your friend Nolan, who you’d recently met as the newest tennant in your housing complex tells you he’s going to be alone over Christmas Break you decided that it would be a great idea to invite him to your families Christmas Party.

A buffer would be great, you thought. Nolan would be exceptionally helpful at keeping your father and uncles away from you as they could talk sports until they were blue in the face. Now it was just your mom and aunts that you needed to be wary of.

“You know Nols, you don’t have to come if you don’t want to. If you want you can just drop me off I can always Uber back to the house.” As you were riding to your parents home, you couldn’t help but feel overly anxious - maybe it was better if you didn’t subject Nolan to the craziness that is your family. After all, once he has to deal with them, you probably won’t be seeing him anymore.

“It’ll be fine, Y/N. Besides regardless of how this goes, it’ll be a lot better than staying home alone watching the 24 hour marathon of A Christmas Story.” He chuckled at your nervousness and grabbed your hand from your lap before rubbing small circles on the back of it.

“I’m just saying my family can be a little . . . Much at times. I just want to apologize in advance - I’ve never really brought anyone around them before, so I really don’t know how this is going to go. I mean its not that your my boyfriend or anything and need to be worried I just really don’t know how this is gonna look. I mean my mom -“ You started to ramble but were cut off when Nolan gave your hand a tight squeeze.

“Y/N, It‘ll be fine - Now we’re on the right street. . . But what house is it?”

“1220 - it’s a few houses down on the left.” You could feel your leg shaking - dealing with your family alone was stressful, and while you thought that having Nolan would make it less of an issue, you’re starting to wonder whether or not this was a good idea.

As soon as Nolan pulled into the driveway you hurried to get out of the car and met him at the trunk to grab the box of gifts you have for your family. Nolan carries the bottle of whiskey and the flowers he grabbed for your mom at the supermarket close to your place, before placing his hand on the small of your back to lead you to the door.

After a quick knock you opened the door only to be met with the shocked faces of your family. Your dad was the first to speak up “Y/N, we knew you were on your way but who is this? We didn’t know you had anyone else coming”

“Hi Everyone, this is my friend Nolan. He wasn’t able to spend Christmas with his family this year so I brought him with me, I hope that’s okay”

“Of course it is hun, I mean a little warning would be nice but I can add another setting to the table quickly. Thanks for coming Nolan.” Your mother quickly hurried to the dining room to make a space for your plus one. You couldn’t help but feel confused as you put your presents in everyone’s designated piles - your parents were being awfully nice . . . which was so unlike them.

“So Nolan, is your team going to continue to shit the bed this season? Or should I pick a more reliable team for my fantasy hockey league?” You’re chest clenched - this wouldn’t end well - you knew your dad liked sports but didn’t think he paid that much attention to hockey

“With all due respect sir, we definitley are trying our hardest. We haven’t had the best start to the season but that’s not for lack of trying. “ You could tell that Nolan was trying to be nice, but was still getting frustrated.

You could hear your dad huff from behind you, “ but the capitals . . . “ if this conversation were to continue, you had a feeling you would be leaving with one angry Flyer.

You went to ask about the food, hoping that by stuffing their mouths, it would prevent Nolan and your Dad from getting into it over hockey “Mom, is dinner ready?”

“Is that all you think about food? Y/N its not like you need much more” You began to shake your head knowing your mothers had issues with your weight since you were a child. “Go get everyone while I grab the food out of the oven, then we can say grace at the table.”

After a long and trying to avoid as many questions as you could from your parents about any potential relationship between you and Nolan, you all sat around the tree getting ready to exchange some presents and enjoy a nice hallmark Christmas movie together. Your mother brought out a tray of cookies and hot chocolate for everyone to share. Reaching for one of the larger sugar cookies you couldn’t help but stop yourself when you felt your mother’s hand on your wrist.

After giving her an odd look you felt her lean over the side of the loveseat you and Nolan were sharing before she whispered in your ear. “Y/N, you already had so much at dinner maybe a cookie isn’t the best idea right now. Wouldn’t want to have to exchange the clothing I got you for a bigger size. I got a gift receipt for a reason, but that wasn’t it”

You shook your head and leaned back against the couch. Now there was the family you knew and loved. You could tell that Nolan knew something was up when he offered you a portion of his chocolate chip cookie and you politely declined. It was time for presents and your family has a tradition of pulling names out of a hat to see who gets to open up their gifts one at a time, and you couldn’t wait for the exchange to be over so you and Nolan could head home before you each went your separate ways.

Of course, this year your luck really had run out and you ended up being the last one to open your gifts. While you all usually only exchanged one or two things you never knew what your family would find and think of you, so mix the anticipation with your large want to leave and you couldn’t help yourself from bouncing your knee and tapping your fingers.

Your pile was small, not that you expected or needed much. So when you pulled out a few new workout outfits only to find a gym membership at the bottom, you couldn’t help but sigh. After muttering a quick and silent thanks to your parents, you began to get up from where you sat, frustrated that the only thing your parents could find for you was workout clothes. Your apartment complex had a gym included that you didn’t even need to pay for, but obviously your parents thought you needed to do more. Before you could leave the room, your mom was quick to grab one final gift from under the tree and handed it to you with a laugh.

“Here Y/N, we thought that this was an appropriate gift for you. Something you’ll never be able to find for yourself.” Scrunching your nose in confusion, you once again sat beside Nolan and started to unwrap the small box. Everyone started laughing at your reaction, and it was clear that your mom had made it known that she was proud of the Grow a Boyfriend toy she had found.

Pushing the toy back into the box you grabbed onto Nolan’s wrist. “Well thank you for the presents but I think it’s time Nolan and I headed back to our complex, we wouldn’t want to travel in this weather after all.” Everyone seemed confused as you looked outside where the lightest dusting of snow remained - Nonetheless, your family bid you goodnight and you and Nolan both started your drive home silently.

“I’m really sorry you had to sit through that. . . I was kind of hoping for a miracle to happen and for my family to not be dicks this time.”

Nolan grabbed your hand again and sighed. “It wasn’t that bad, I can tell that they stress you out though. You don’t deserve the way they treat you. While it isn’t necessarily as bad as physical abuse, I can still tell they find ways to put you down and that isn’t okay.”

You could feel tears in your eyes. No one else had been around long enough to notice the snide remarks your family made about you or how what they thought was funny would actually hurt your feelings.

“I really don’t want to end Christmas on a bad note, so instead of going straight back to our respecitve places . . . how about we go do something fun instead?” You looked at Nolan with a look of confusion - you hadn’t expected him to want to spend anymore time with you after having to deal with your family.

After giving him a positive answer, you started to get worried once you drove past your apartment complex. It wasn’t until you reached the next red light that he hurriedly pulled a beanie out of the arm rest between you. “Hold this over your eyes, I want this to be a surprise.

It wasn’t much longer until you felt the car stop. “Nolan where are we?”

He chuckled under his breath, “You’ll find out in a minute. Now I’m just going to sit you here,” you felt yourself being lowered into a seat. “And I’ll be right back - don’t move and don’t peek, okay?”

You nodded your head yes and waited for him to come back to you. You heard a big click almost as if it was a set of overhead lights being turned on, and almost jumped out of your seat when you felt an arm on your shoulder.

“Yo, chill out, it’s just me, Y/N. Go ahead and take the hat off so you can see again”

You couldn’t help but laugh when you realized that his version of a surprise was taking you to an ice rink.

“I should’ve known Nolan - what are we doing here?”

“We’re gonna skate, duh. And before you say anything about not having skates, I already grabbed you one of the extra pairs they have here. First though, I got you a Christmas Present and after seeing what your family got you, I figured it was best to wait.”

Out of his pocket Nolan pulled out a small ring box. “Nols you didn’t have to get me anything. I mean I don’t have anything for you.” You started to get antsy but he was quick to shush you.

In the box was the cutest silver ring with your initials on it. You were in shock at the sight of it. “Now I know its not anything fancy but TK got one for his mom and I couldn’t help but think it would be nice for you . . .”

“Nolan, I love it. Thank you” You couldn’t help but tear up at the thought of him getting you something so dainty and personalized.

“Those better not be tears, Y/N. After all we haven’t even made it onto the ice yet.”

As you both put your skates on, you couldn’t help but feel like the luckiest girl in the world. For the longest time, Nolan was just a neighbor - the cute guy at the end of the hall. But now it felt like there was so much more which made you think that maybe Christmas isn’t so bad afterall.

5. Why did you start a blog in the first place?

To collect Tolkien-stuff. There was so much stuff I wanted to get access to, e.g. GIFs, fan art, but couldn't, 'cause I didn't have a Tumblr blog. So I made one.

6. Why did you choose your icon/pfp?

'Cause I'm a Tolkien fan and a lesbian (I mistyped that word twice, so it's real...). I saw this icon used by others - simple, states facts, but I couldn't find the right one via Google so I made this one in PowerPoint. There're some on Google probs, I don't know, I couldn't find one, so I made one.

7. Why did you choose your header?

You can't see it, but my hidden header image is the profile pic of my other blog. So it's technically an Easter egg!

1. Why did you choose your url? bc in my house we tend to get up late and end up having breakfast and lunch at the same time xD. Also Nolwen is a ~translation~ of my name in elvish heh
