I don’t have the brainpower to elaborate on this the way it deserves but the Toy Soldier is a brilliant parody of militarism and Dapper Steampunk Englishness that really doesn’t get enough credit
#the mechanisms#the mechs#the toy soldier#as I’ve been archiving I found a Jessica law tweet about bad retrofuturism#the kind of thing I like to refer to as taking the punk out of steampunk#and she mentions ts’s manner is very similar to what she’s criticizing#and acknowledges it does murder which that character archetype doesn’t generally#but she didn’t get into how. it does murder. it follows any order. it loves battle and is posh and knows everything about tea etiquette.#and those are bad!! it’s not noble or gallant it’s a very polite war criminal!!#it’s that genteel English officer taken seriously and with the implications of its violence#which is a wonderful pushback to the kind of popular ‘steampunk’ that’s just romanticized neovictorianism
