I'm new to Sade so sorry if this is a stupid question, but was Sade gay? I'm currently reading Justine and noticed the passionate, semi-romantic descriptions of m/m sex, which contrast with the crude descriptions of f/m sex. I've not read all of Sade's books, but the ones I have read also feature characters who're mostly disinterested in women, who give off self-insert vibes (e.g. Dolmancé). Am I reading too much into it? IDK but I was wondering if you could shed some light.

Really all that can be said with certainty is that he definitely wasn't straight lol. Like anyone who died before modern queer theory, Sade's sexuality can be difficult to label with today's terminology. He was certainly attracted to both men and women, so for simplicity's sake I just say he was bisexual. But really, who knows...

Characters that he uses as self-inserts like Dolmancé in PitB or Bressac in Justine are pretty exclusively attracted to men. Like you said, there's multiple times in his writing where characters will praise m/m sex and show blatant disgust towards sex with women. But if you look at Sade's life, there's only one known* male sex partner and many women. There's also several women Sade was in love with throughout his life, but there exists no letters of him professing love to any man. Could this be because male victims were less likely to go to the police, therefore less known to us? because women were easier to pursue in public? because even he felt the pressure of societal norms? because he kept relations with men better hidden? because any such letters or records were selectively destroyed by a relative? Who knows! It could be some, all, or none of these things. It's really up to the interpretation of the reader. The misogyny, philosophical extremism, and very culturally different ideas about sex add so many different variables to Sade's sexuality.

To add further confusion: gender and sexuality were much more correlated in Sade's writing (and seemingly in the time period in general, I mean look at the bisexual Lord Hervey being referred to as "the third sex"), male characters who get sodimized call it them "becoming women", women who put on strap-ons "become men", even women who get sodimized are masculinized: Saint-Ange says she wants to be a "Ganymede" to Dolmancé. So sodomy seemed inherently gay to Sade, regardless of the sexes involved or what roles they played. Whereas today, that's definitely not the case. Beauvoir follows along with the sexuality-gender correlation and suggests that Sade felt more feminine than masculine and his written contempt for female genitalia was a product of his own gender frustrations. From what I've read, most modern historians tend to avoid labeling Sade with anything other than "sodomite" and "libertine" only using "bisexual" and "homosexual" to label certain actions he performed like "homosexual sex" "bisexual orgy" etc. This is when the word queer is godsent.

Tldr; He's too 18th century libertine for modern labels. Colloquially, I default to calling him bi, but we'll never really know. Maybe he would have preferred gay due to his preferences/philosophies. Who knows. Safest bet is to just call him queer.

*Should go without saying but, there were obviously more. Latour is just the only named one with recorded proof.

For y'all's review for the AU: A Prequel Outline - Divorce Saga Domon

Hey real quick - I'm thinking of maybe changing the timeline to 2 years post canon as opposed to 3 years and change post canon.

The reason being: I had a thought that this scene could either be part if the fic or if it's getting to big then it could be a stand alone tie-in prequel fic as part of this AU but - like

Immediately Post Divorce Domon Needs Space and runs off. As one does. And he runs to Earth because he just wants to Get Lost for a while.

He has Argo smuggle him out to avoid detection.

Argo has Andrew help stow Domon in a storage hanger of a Neo Canadian supply ship that's returning to the US - they have trade often enough and share agricultural resources - which leads to Domon ending up in New York when he hits Earthside pavement.

He's privately worked on his English the last couple of months and after being dropped in New York with a different hairstyle, outfit, and accent he's unrecognizable. 

He considers making his way west to get some solitude in the wilderness, but something about that initial plan feels off now that he's on the ground.

Chibodee is also Earthside for a special series of prize fights aimed at raising charitable appeal for the US in the eyes of Neo Americans.

Domon decides to hit up Chibodee for a fight on a day between matches hoping it'll clear his head and give him the clarity to decide on a course of action. What ends up happening is an unexpected heart to heart via blows and a breakdown.

Domon is happy for Rain and Kyoji, and he knows it's not true; but he feels like he lost a piece of himself when his relationship with Rain fell apart.

Domon's instinct is to run after that but Chibodee knows this city and Domon doesn't hide out for long before Chibodee drags him back to his place to stay and just "Chill out and breathe. You don't have to be anyone but yourself here. You can take as long as you need to find out what everything changing means for you." Friends and teammates stick together.

So Domon spends a few weeks with Chibodee sparring and hanging out in New York. Chibodee does a frankly awesome job at containing his feelings because he's focusing on Domons feelings and being a good friend first and foremost. Whatever he's feeling can wait until after Domon is done going though it.

There's a bit of a twinge in Domon's heart as he leaves that he can't really place.

After he returns to Neo Japan and gets settled back into life with his family, The Dreams start.

They're mainly set in New York. Small things first like noticing Chibodee's smile and his eyes. Then sparring sessions that begin to turn lurid.

He thought these kinds of dreams would stop after he was married.... he doesn't know what to do about this.

I just figure it gives more clarity and sense of time for the journey from Comphet Marriage Dissolution to Feelings to Confession. Idk.

But I got stuck on a bit and then had this thought and needed to get it down before I lost it and it was so long it made sense to make it its own post as opposed to several replies.

The Maize and Clown Motel will probably still be 3 years and change post canon for clarification.

i think another reason why rev!route gunter/corrin specifically is so compelling to me - (how many are we on krad, 23?)

- is that you can very legitimately read it as the canon ship in revalation, specifically. yeah yeah yeah, his supports are greyed out, whatever (truthfuly doesn't even matter when you play the version with unlocked supports or use the in-game library).

it's the .... i hesitate to call it subtext when you've got whatever the hell is going on in ch25/ch26, ha. but more than that it's the symbolic, thematic, explicitly continuously layered importance of their dynamic. he's there in the very first scene with corrin, he's there in the very last scene, the gut-punches of scenes involve him or echo him somehow. the game very literally falls apart storytelling wise if you don't put gunter (+azura/arete/mikoto/anankos, all of who are honestly more my favorites than the playable cast) at the center, and i think that's a large part of why most folks bounced off of rev because it wasn't about the sibling royals.

see - my general otp archetype falls into the category of 'no way in hell would become canon' (too Weird with power dynamics, too kinky) -- with pretty much the sole exception of hellsing (integra/alucard).

and like, i'm a shipper for life. i don't have the time or energy or fucks to sit through 32453 episodes of a mediocre show or game or whatever just to settle with crumbs. i served my time there, these days i'd rather waste my time drawing/writing exactly the kind of Freak Ass Ship (and stories) i like and chilling in the corner feeling fed and oh so satisfied.

i honestly was not ever expecting my favorite game series to drop in with this kind of ship dynamic, but it did. and holy hell it stuck the landing.

it seems (from rough observation, not any surveys yet) that in general fandom culrure:

-a lot of characters that are commonly headcanoned as trans men are male in canon (ie the character transitioned years before canon)

-a lot of characters that are commonly headcanoned as trans women are... also male in canon (ie the character is still an egg/closeted)

and i think that raises a lot about 1: fandom's seeming inability to connect to characters that are female in canon 2: the differences in how people view trans men vs trans women and our transition processes

I saw a post where people complained about garbage bins hidden in cupboards. Seriously? You know that garbage stinks, right? In order to not stink up your house, your garbage should be covered. As soon as you add a lid, there is a step you have to take before throwing garbage away. Having a lid or having a cupboard to open are similar sized steps to get to the garbage. At that point it is a preference.

The only cost is the cost of the garbage can, which open top ones are cheaper than any ones with lids. Stop claiming your preference is morally superior.
